William, Kate and Harry Spearhead New Mental Health Campaign 'Heads Together' & Exclusive Claudia Bradby Code

April really has proven to be the month that keeps on giving, and what could be better than a surprise Sunday morning sighting for a wonderful cause? The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are spearheading a new campaign to tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.

Heads Together was chosen as the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year and brings together a host of mental health charities - including Kate's patronage Place2Be - to change the conversation, raise awareness and provide people with help.  Other charity partners include Mind, Calm, Best Beginnings, Contact, The Mix and Young Minds.

The charity's website asks us to: "Join Heads Together. Help us build on the great work being done across the country so that prejudice and fear no longer stand in the way of people getting the help they need. Let’s get our Heads Together to eliminate stigma and change the conversation on mental health."

The Heads Together website features a message from the royal trio:

Through our work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities, and with veterans, we have seen time and time again that unresolved mental health problems lie at the heart of some of our greatest social challenges.
Too often, people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health. This fear of prejudice and judgement stops people from getting help and can destroy families and end lives. Heads Together wants to help people feel much more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and have the practical tools to support their friends and family.
The Heads Together campaign will build on the great work being done by our partner charities so that prejudice and fear no longer stand in the way of people getting the help they need.
Being the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year is the perfect springboard for the Heads Together campaign. We cannot wait to see hundreds of runners hitting the streets of London next April to end the stigma and change the conversation on mental health once and for all.

Royal reporter Roya Nikkhah reported news of the year-long campaign a couple of months ago, noting the royals would each focus on a specific area of mental health throughout the year. Kate has been very much focusing on children's mental health in particular for some time now, and that will continue, while William will work with young men focusing on the high number of suicides, and Harry with veteran.

To coincide with today's London Marathon, a video filmed in Kensington Gardens three days ago was released.

Competitors were filmed running through the grounds with William, Kate and Harry joining them and adding a brief message: "Mental health is as important as physical health." Prince Harry added: "We can all play our part by talking and listening to each other and helping each other find support." And William concluded: "Let's get our heads together and change the conversation on mental health." You can watch the video on YouTube (Don't forget to watch it to the end for blooper moments).

In the video, the royals cheer on marathon participants.

Harry captured a photo of his brother.

Harry seemed rather pleased with the results.

Harry raced with some of the schoolchildren.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "Through their work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities, and with veterans, their royal highnesses have seen time and time again that unresolved mental health problems lie at the heart of some of our greatest social challenges. They are passionate about tackling the stigma surrounding the issue. Too often, they have seen that people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health. This fear of prejudice and judgment stops people from getting help and can destroy families and end lives. They want to help change the national conversation."

Jessica People, who works for The Mix and Young Minds, shared her experiences of the day on her blog.

"We were all told to get into our groups as we will be meeting Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate in the next 10 mins and they will be coming out to get involved in the film – as you can imagine I thought I was in a dream but I also felt like I was on cloud 9; such a surreal experience – I went to shake Harry’s hand and I said Hello Harry, my name is Jessica People and its very nice to meet you and I am here with YoungMinds (my hand was shaking so much), it was weird because felt like id known him for years – spent ages speaking to him (well…..the others did as I was speechless) and I quickly also shook Kates hand near the end of filming and told her how much of an amazing role model she is."

You can find out more about Heads Together and apply for a Heads Together marathon place here. It's a wonderful initiative and I very much looking forward to seeing the royals supporting mental health in the year ahead.

  1. WHAT AN AWESOME IDEA. Perfect in every way. So glad they laughed and had a good time with the promo. Kate looks so at home with William and Harry by her side. She looked so mature, not old. I don't know how to best describe it at the moment. Mature and seasoned? And aren't giggles so much fun. Everyone seemed to be having a really good time. They are using KP not only as their London home, but now for many other worthwhile events also, just the way we had hoped they would. They are getting settled into things. Lovely.

Thanks for the early post Charlotte. That was a nice thing to wake up to. :)

Off topic and I really hate to be a downer when we are on a royal roll but is anyone else officially worried about Courtney? I think we've had two weeks of silence from her. Very unsettling.

I didn't realize that but I feel better now just knowing that she came through the surgery part ok. The nurse in me was concerned but I understand the pain issue as well. My 86 year old mother recently had a knee replacement and I was close by her side through it all. The pain aspect of it in the first week was tough (but to be expected and not out of the ordinary) but she did fantastic, thank God!

If I have time later tonight I'll try and read comments and see if you all have heard from her in the last few days.

But, thank you for letting me know. We all need support from one another and encouragement in difficult times. (or at least I do!)

A great new initiative and how nice they're doing it as a joint venture. It almost feels like this blog is part of the campaign! It is ANZAC Day in New Zealand today and everywhere here and in Australia we'll be commemorating all those who fought and died on our behalf. My family will be attending one of the services here later this morning and my 11 year old grandson will be wearing his great great grandfather's war medals from Galipoli in Turkey and the Somme battle fields in France. I see Prince Harry is attending several services in London tomorrow to commemorate the day.

  6. Fantastic! They all look really happy, and like they are having a lot of fun. I loved the video, it really showed Kate's natural side with William and Harry. Kate's giggles were so sweet and so real, and they obviously all have such a nice relationship. I love this momentum they've built up, and I hope to see it continue over the next few weeks.

On a side note, I just cannot deal with some of the British journalists! Rebecca English tweeted out this morning, "another unannounced photo call" as if to complain that the press pack weren't invited to see this being filmed. It was not a photo call, it is a promotional video that is being filmed. She also complained about how it was "wrong" not to let the press into KP to get their own photos of George. We all heard the constant snaps of cameras from video footage of the tour, can you imagine squeezing that into the drawing room at KP and expecting the same natural photos? Further, George is 2 and was about to go to bed! I understand their desire to take their own photos, but they have to be reasonable, here! Okay, rant over!

Lovely surprise this morning, and thank you Charlotte!

    2. Yay, another charm for the bracelet. yay.

      Delete
    3. Again know your facts. They were upset with the whole KP thing because only an american journalist had access. They weren't asking that every single one of them be in there but at least have one british press member represented

      Delete
    4. I personally don't think the entire press pack should have been allowed inside, and I don't think Rebecca English was suggesting that. She said "it's wrong that only a White House snapper was allowed to capture the image" and I do see her point.

Initially they had also allowed one British photographer in to take photos of the adults, it was Dom Lipinski with the Press Association who was working as pool photographer. He says he was asked to leave before George was brought out! The biggest shot of the night he missed because he was told to leave!

So yes I *understand* why a lot of feathers were ruffled over that, which was the main point I was trying to make. It's not the end of the world, but I *understand* the frustration.

Think about it: A historic image is about to be captured, a visiting American President meeting the very young, future King of England. It's happening in a taxpayer funded palace in London. An American photographer and a British photographer are present, but only the British photographer is asked to leave??? No one thinks there's something even remotely lopsided about that?

Does anyone honestly think for a minute that Pete Souza would be asked to leave the White House private residence in a similar instance and the British photographer would have been allowed to stay?

      Delete
    5. Anon 17:54....my understanding is they also had their KP photographer inside. It wasn't an American journalist either, it was Pete Souza, who is Obama's personal photographer. He goes with him everywhere and does not work for an American publication.

      Delete
    6. Excellent point 15:33, that "innocence and beauty" wouldn't have been there with a horde of headline grabbers there at the ready.

      Delete
    7. Actually the only reason that we got to see the pictures is because the White House photographer Pete Souza was there with the President and released the pictures.
A lot is being made of William allowing access to George but from what I understand it was actually WH releasing the picture that allowed us a peak. Not KP.

      Delete
    8. Nina NYC
This is my understanding also. The press on both sides of the ocean know this was the set up. It was a private WH photographer not a working member of a news outlet.

    9. Claudia, I question your senecio of the British photographer being told to leave before George was brought out in view of the fact George was visible to all of us from the time they met at the front door. Also since George was allowed to stay up, why would they delay his meeting Obama, while other pictures were taken. Makes more sense that the group pics were taken after he went to bed.

    10. Claudia 18:59,
      WHAT?
I hurt for that photographer for many obvious reasons. The intended or unintended message is not good for him as a local media, and the UK people. Some body in that house hold including Kate must have been bitter with the media to take such obvious action. Still, WHAT?

The debate here on media had been a heated one. By the time all posts are read on this blog regarding the subject, it can make one crucial and very significant opinion by some of the most reputable international media, like BBC, Time magazine and so on. Every one's post has some contribution from different angles, that a sum of everything well analyzed can help pinpoint what were the cause, well researched, the impact and solution. There is reasonably refreshed reference from Valerie's post on 4/25, 00:25 (the latest).

William's perception of media starting from his youth, compounded by the British media's cruel take on Kate and family had most likely resulted to bring such strange outcome. Reminder also that Williams’ message at the engagement interview that he will protect Kate massively. Now, a British photographer is less favorable in taking an image of a precious child they both share.

Well, first he is THEIR child, and second he is the 4th in the future BRF and country, however adored and shared. Is that the message?

    11. Sorry, cont..from response to Claudia-18:39,
Somebody hit back hard from an accumulative negative experience from British media. Some of them had been outrageously vicious in the way they give their forum a lead for an opportunity to tear down especially Kate’s mother side. After their children were born, Carole and Michael M. happen to be who a big support for W&K young family. When William said, “they are in good hands” asked about their children by a journalist during the Bhutan monastery tour, it said a lot. Kate’s mother is the unsung heroine who will also be on hand for support during their future tours as well. It is time the British media leave their vicious lead which reinforces vitriol against a woman, if anything should have been admired for several reasons. THE HIT BACK IS HARD, assumption or not, the reason/s included stands out with facts, a decision most likely made in unison of the couple.

    12. Anon 15:12 I actually agree with your timing question, because the same thought crossed my mind. But it's not my scenario, I was sharing what Dom Lipinski said, and he's the photographer in question who was there.

If he wasn't asked to leave, it means he wasn't allowed in until George had gone to bed, so one is as bad as the other. Because either way, the American photographer was given access that the British photographer wasn't. Again, this would never happen if you reversed the situation, the White House photographer would never be prevented from capturing something in the White House that a foreign photographer had access to.

Anon15 I understand that William hates the media, believe me! As I've said I've been following him since before he was born :) so I get it. But because of his position, he has to learn to deal with the British press, good and bad. And his disdain includes the highly respected members of the press, not just the seedier tabloids.

You could also argue one of the chief roles of the royals is to promote and support British business. And British media employ thousands of people, most are the overworked and underpaid ones who get none of the "fame" and work behind the scenes. Trying to undercut that industry affects many more people than the reporters and photographers on assignment.

    13. Anonymous in NY26 April 2016 at 03:59

I agree with Claudia- it was a bad move. @NinaNYC, if you reread the final paragraph of Claudia's comment, it still stands: the photographer might not be working directly for a news outlet but he was an American photographer nonetheless. Plus, if W&K specifically asked the Obamas to not release any photos of George, I have to think they would have complied.

@Anon15:12, I read it to mean that the British photographer was allowed outside shots, the posed ones on the front steps, but was asked to leave at that point and not invited inside, which is basically the same thing as asking him to leave before taking photos of George.

It was not smart at all of W&K to let this happen, IMO, in light of the negative press they've had lately and ESPECIALLY w/r/t access, privacy, giving a US site (HuffPo) Kate's guest editor post...it does seem as if William is spiting the British press and I believe it will come back to haunt him.

      Delete
    14. Claudia@23:52, Your very considerate thoughts and reasoning (last paragraph) is a crucial reminder it is an industry which employs many people. It can also be argued the people who are the subjects of the media as well as the public deserve reasonable professionalism and integrity from the same industry as well.

White House photographer is like a national institution in my opinion. If he was there with the President, WH might have requested for the photographer to have access to the Obama’s dinner visit. KP was agreeable in accepting the request for WH access, and it met the British media half way photographing the adults. Does this all come down to context? After the shock is over in whatever assumption, empathy and reasoning, we still don’t seem to know why that happened.

I can scribble and rationalize all day, the truth is, KP can use a public forum where they answer questions from the citizens, Expats and other concerned people periodically. A modern social media system is one of the tools, but the “old fashion”/the standard media should continue to have its place in the world, and especially for an old fashion system like monarchy.

Absolutely right, Michael! On most days the media act like petulant toddlers who don't get their way. So since they have unlimited access to the airways or print they fight back by making snide on-air comments or print catty remarks in their columns. So that's what we are seeing being played out over the last weeks. They do so in the hopes of energizing those who are usually critical of the RF or of William and Kate in particular to unleash a so-called backlash against them. The problem with this strategy is that sooner or later reasonable minds will begin to see through the tactic and it will begin to wear thin. As for the issue of access, we hear the same complaints here in the States from the White House press corp who complain that Pete Souza has greater access to POTUS than the rest of them, never mind that Pete put all photos on the White House tweeter feed and shares these photos with them. It still doesn't satisfy them, hence their constant carping about access. Same reason they get upset when Kate takes the photo. This is their nature, but it's getting old.

  10. It is such a crazy thing, this unceasing complaint from the press. The Royal's duty is to be visible to people, not to photographers. One photographer can be enough, why a herd of photographers should be allowed to go into their home?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Royal duty is to be visible to the people. How should they go about that? I think that's a good topic for discussion. How should the royals convey their message? Should they have one favored photographer/journalist? Or should they allow the royal press pack in?

Right now, from what I understand, Chris Jackson is the photographer who gets a lot of access. Interestingly, he is dating Natasha Archer. Perhaps he is an excellent photographer (he has won awards) and they genuinely like him. Or perhaps there is favoritism involved. I can see all sides of that argument, including the royal press pack's.

      Delete
    2. I think they are doing a great job going about getting the information out and being seen without hordes of reporters and photographers being so very intrusive. I have the feeling Chris Jackson was already well known to the Cambridge's and that is how Natasha met him. I believe the Queen also has one royal photographer for events at BP and Windsor. There is no way you would have gotten the pics of George with a host of photographers around.

      Delete
    3. bluhare I personally think a rota would probably be best, made up of news photographers and journalists. That was the preferred method for some time.

The problem with one favored person, where does that person's allegiance lie? Is their role as a "news" person anymore, or do they become an extension of PR, to report only what is approved? For example, a news photographer sees evidence of something illegal in a politician's office, they recognize the importance of it and need for the public to know about it. But does a "favored" photographer say, "I can't take a picture of that, because it would cost me this comfy gig" ??

I've said before, that if W&K worked on a rota, it would go a long way to developing relationships with members of the media. It would also give them what they seem to be looking for, limited members of the press at *certain* events. But at least then it's not the same person all the time.

But shutting out the press is not an option for taxpayer funded public officials, to protect the public more than anything. If a member of the royal family was making money by selling access to the palaces and the Queen, shouldn't the taxpaying public know? Sounds fairly familiar actually...

      Delete
    4. THe Royal press pack is not given access inside royal palaces. When the Queen had lunch with the Obamas, selected photographer plus WhiteHouse (de Souza.). Dinner at KP - the same. Press were allowed outside.

This isn't anything new, the U.K. Press are just fed up that they missed out on a golden opportunity.

The photographer that is there gets access through the pool process. CHris Jackson is a Getty Images photographer, not a free lance. So it's Getty that got the gig.

The freelancers are really peeved but that's the way it has always worked and that is the key point. This is nothing new.

    5. Annette New Zealand24 April 2016 at 17:52

You can have both approaches bluhare. I think William and Harry have to try to get over their phobias from the past, but at the same time the Press have to accept that the Royal family need to have some times when they are private. The Queen does it by retreating to her estates, but somehow when William and Kate try to do that they are criticised. And remember poor Harry inadequately disguising himself with that cap when visiting the supermarket. I think on other occasions like the big ceremonies the Press are entitled to be there and time should be taken to pose briefly for them. If it is impracticable to include them because of local restrictions or bans on photography then say so and perhaps have a photo call beforehand or afterwards and be prepared to answer a few (hopefully polite) questions. But it is perfectly acceptable to sometimes use a pool photographer and share the photo around. The children should never be subjected to hordes of clicking journalists or have an individual sneaking around in the bushes when they are playing. And let Catherine sometimes take her children's photos too.

I agree fully with what you say Annette NZ :) Both sides have to make compromises. The royals need to suck up a bit to the media and not hold their ground on unimportant things. A hi and a wave goes a long way. But the media also has to stop being greedy and whiny.

      Delete
    7. Claudia, I agree with you. I can see having a staff photographer, but Chris Jackson is not on staff. He works for a for-profit organization that makes money off the photographs he takes. And I think you raise a good question about his objectivity.

The thing that makes me shake my head reading some of the posts here is the thinking that there is some vast media conspiracy to undermine William and Kate. I see no evidence of that at all. Up until recently their coverage has been glowing. However, we agree again because I don't want a palace controlled royal press pack either. If that had been true, Charles and Diana might still be married because the story would never have come out. The leaks would have been shut down. I think we want a free press, because the alternative is pretty unthinkable, and I am surprised to read posters from the US decrying freedom of the press and by association free speech, when I imagine they themselves would not like to feel their opinions were muzzled by the government -- which by extension William is in this situation.

What I think is going on is that William is trying to beat them at their own game. I believe he will lose. He may win some battles, but this is a long game and I do not think he will come out on top if his attitude does not relax somewhat.

I am not criticizing the BRF at all, as I am one who is very loyal and a bit slow on some of the changes, but I have teenage kids who help push me along...the Cambridge's need a good PR person, Catherine needs a good stylist, and frankly a new hair person...Ali

Anon 15:41, I don't understand your comment. You acknowledge that their role is to be visible. The royal reporters are the ones who make that happen. It is their livelihood.

And my understanding was that they use "Tash's" boyfriend exactly for that reason - he wouldn't want to ever release a photo that was in any way unflattering and risk his girlfriend's position! It is a huge conflict of interest and William really needs to back down or he is going to end up regretting it later. These are just people trying to do their jobs; no one is suggesting a camera crew park itself in KP a la "Keeping up With the Kardashians" - this was a special, historic even and W&K specifically snubbed British reporters/photographers. Frankly I don't understand how anyone could defend their decision; it seems clear that it was a spiteful move on William's part.

    12. I think we need to be very clear on the difference between official photographers and media. The Prince George photograph was taken by the American President's offical photographer not a member of the American press. It was then released for everyone to use, which sounds fair to me. The important point being that everyone had equal access at the same time. Prince George is only two and this was his first official engagement. None of us knows if there was a KP official photographer inside as well. I see it as the same as for example Charlotte's christening. Media outside and then an official photograph released. The use of twitter and instagram is not just Prince William. Buckingham Palace and Prince Charles also have very active accounts with daily posts which I view as an extension of the court circular. If I wanted to know what for example Camilla was up to I could look at their twitter or instagram and the information would be there. This week Camilla was highlighting rape and violence against women. I haven't seen much mention of this in the media and I think it would take a bit of time to find the small paragraph where ever. And none of us would deny that it is any issue very much in the public interest to know about. The problem for us, the public,is that the press is and should be free to report what they choose: so often we are denied information because mostly the decision on what to report is made on a business profit basis, which is understandable as the media is first and foremost a business. The other important point is the number of followers on a twitter or instagram account does not equate to the of times the account has been viewed. I might be passionately interested in Jamie Oliver and have his instagram feeding into my account (following) but I might occasionally look at Nigella Lawson's account to see her latest scrumptious desert (not a follower). A free press should give us the public the choice as to what source of information we use. I question if our sources of information should be restricted exclusively to just tradional media. I personally like a mix. I have thought for some time now that the media beef is more about loss of exclusivity and to a certain extent loss of power than anything else.

    13. Bluhare, you commented that some anti-press palace conspiracy might have meant that Charles and Diana would still be married. If that is what you meant, would that have been so awful? I may be opening up a can of worms here but towards the end of her life, according to Tina Brown in "The Diana Chronicles." even Diana was appalled at what she had allowed the media to manipulate her into doing. She and Charles might have reached the kind of rapprochement that happens in many marriages where they each can take their own pleasure in what they do. I know that may sound hopelessly Victorian but we will never know if Diana could ever have found happiness.

Claudia, I didn't know that the one British photographer was asked to leave before George appeared. That is indeed horrible--can you tell me who and where the source is for that? Someone also commented that it was the WH photographer who released the George photos. I would assume he did it with W & K's agreement. Perhaps the President cajoled W & K into agreeing. Totally weird anyway.

    14. No need to leave scuff marks on Charlotte's floor, Claudia. :)

16:16, my answer to your question is Charles and Camilla. Think back to just how much Charles resented Diana's popularity. Consider the role Camilla played in C&D's marriage. Factor in the money Charles has spent on PR to have Camilla accepted as his wife and, ultimately, queen. For many people, Camilla is a reminder of very unhappy, unfortunate, and unnecessary circumstances. W&K, on the other hand, represent the potential that was never to be realized in Diana's lifetime.

Charles and Camilla, a rather Edwardian older couple, benefit greatly by A.) W&K not being visible and B.) W&K being undermined every step of the way when they ARE visible. And the added BONUS from C&C's point of view...W&K are being blamed every step of the way because people are not considering the big picture.

    15. Anonymous in NY, I think that this event and the way William and Kate managed the presence of photographers must be seen in perspective. Prince George is very Young, I think that very seldom royals are shown At such a Young age meeting Presidents. George is used to be photographed by his mother, therefore seeing a single person with a camera would not hurt him as an aggressive situation. I see it as the first step in a long process of becoming used TO see unfamiliar people with camera without being afraid; the first time, it is rather sensibile to have admitted only one, and as there was an important guest, it was sensibile and polite to admit his own photoreporter. I am sure that this is a work carefully planned by Catherine and William, and we must let time flow and show what will be their future behaviour. Too soon to judge, in my opinion. 16. Hello Valerie, no, I didn't mean that; sometimes I don't write what I'm thinking very clearly. I was trying to say that if the palace did control the media, then the leaks that came through to the papers that helped get the public on her side would not have been made public; they'd have been quashed. So she would not have been able to go the media as easily as she did, and who knows what would have happened if the public weren't told what was going on.

    17. Alimai, THANK YOU! Your reference to the lack of major coverage of Camilla's work with victims of rape and violence is a VERY significant addition to the conversation here.

Facts: Camilla is a senior royal...a future queen. And there is no denying the importance of this subject.

SO where WERE the caped crusaders (my "vision" of the press given some of the comments shared here :-)? Where were these men and women who want nothing more than to have access to, and cover, the royals? And what about the argument that W&K need to cooperate with the press or the survival of the monarchy is at stake? Ha!

Here is proof that they are after W&K's star power, and NOT real and important stories to cover where the RF is concerned. And may I just add the fact that no one is happier or more willing to smile at the cameras than Camilla herself. Look at Getty's site...don't take my cynical (but true!) word for it. :)

Important subject...senior royal...no issue with access... Unfortunately, the press has a very different agenda. And here we are beating up on W&K for being unwilling to go along with THEIR agenda. Isn't there an element of insanity here? :)

First of all, I'm delighted with the engagement. At the risk of being greedy, I would love to see them address mental health among an older generation as well - it is a huge problem, one not really covered by the royal family and even more unsung than mental health among the young - so many pensioners may suffer from depression they have never experienced before due to loss and life changes - and yet they are the least likely to want to seek help.
I have some real work (sob) that isn't going too smoothly so I may be in absentia for a few weeks, but will leave with some of my dreaded scattered comments.
Abdication. I could be wrong, I was with the pope, but I believe the queen will never abdicate. She believes in the sacred vows of dedicating her life to the throne - it's worth remembering that she has been through two coronations - which surely left a profound impression as well as seeing abdication as a dirty word. Should her health not permit, I believe there could be a regency for Charles. (Should she lose Philip, I think things would become much more difficult for her - so long life to both!!!)
Charles, I think, has waited so long for the throne that abdication is unlikely. I believe he accepts the wait - like William, he doesn't want to lose family members - but I do think he will be eager to make his mark. And I disagree with Valerie's friend respectfully. I believe there is little enthusiasm for Charles, but most people do want to keep the idea of succession intact. The issue of Camilla being crowned is another matter- there is a general belief (my own included) that Charles conceded she would not be crowned and I think if he goes back on that - and my feeling is that he intends to, that there will be a great deal of bad feeling. People seem to be taking the assumption that she won't be crowned as something certain - but Charles has constantly pushed on this subject and I think he will keep pushing.
As for William, I think abdication may be a possibility. The word will no longer be dirty.
On Security - The U.S. and Britain are different nations and the latter doesn't like a fuss - so there is a major different in perception and overt security such as the president has wouldn't be well taken. (I've seen the motorcade and been affected by the security in Manhattan - part of the city just stopped when Mr Clinton came to dine - (Heaven knows how they manage in Washington D.C. - there must be a way!) That sort of very obvious security would be seen as pretentious for the royal family.
But there is something more. The U.S. has faced an assassination and assassination attempts with the serious injury of a president within the lifetime of many of us, but until 9-11, did not face a constant threat at home. Britain is different - there was the war and bombing and then the Troubles - that was constantly on the minds of many of us - but life had to go on, and the royal family was a symbol of that - royal and commoner alike were affected by the Troubles - I don't think there is that same feeling of personal representation with the president - he is expected to have security outside that of the normal person. So security will always be more discreet and the royal are expected to get on with it - as Anne and the queen did when there were attacks and invaders - not a huge fuss. That's why William's letter alluding to threats was seen as out of the normal way of things.
I believe Philip's little drive was a subtle dig at all the security requirements of Mr Obama - and given how unsubtle Mr Obama was with his meddling (out of line, but no more of that) I find that rather pleasing. And now - I'll start anew with that dreaded subject - the press.

    2. Julia,
You are not being greedy. You brought up a specific sidetracked cause. It is great to start from the young, as the young trio of BRF focus seems to be. The elderly who suffer from depression can benefit from the older members of BRF in taking up the cause. Now and then coordinate among the different age groups as members of BRF in a cohesive way to high light mental illness as a cause for different age groups. Declining health, problems in aging, isolation, and changes in income all compounded contribute to the depression of the elderly, or become the cause. People get better awareness when they are in that profession, have witnessed it in other elderly population or have awareness. It is excellent you posted on the subject.

While on age related issue, can’t help but be mindful of an alert, well-kept and healthy looking 90 years old Queen. After watching the video, “The Queen at 90, a family tribute”, I realized how QEII’s mind is sharp in her recollection of events from ages ago. Not only has that, her voice, reasoning and judgement seemed intact. She is one of those percentiles of nonagenarians who seem to keep going on. It was a rear opportunity to ever listen to her spontaneous conversation in that video. I ended up convinced she will not abdicate. In fact you put it nicely too(if Q ill, regency of PC).

I watched William’s interview with BBC and ITV both once. From what I remember, William seemed more reassuring regarding his line of succession when the time comes, and that he takes that responsibility seriously. Over all, he did himself and his wife a big favor by doing both interviews. You are kind of hesitant regarding W’s abdication.

Your seasoned posts will be missed while you will be away, regardless of the occasional disagreement I might have had. Good luck and best wishes with your “real work”, and come back soon.

As for the established press, I think news of their demise may be somewhat exaggerated and the idea that only the sports pages are looked at- well, I will just say that is one person's opinion and many of us care about the news of the day far more than games - although my late father - bless him - did love his sports news.
As for the news from Kensington Palace - royal followers may take it as their main source but most people don't - nor, in my opinion, should they. The free press has a role - otherwise, we would be like North Korea - Kensington Palace will never utter the slightest criticism, deserved or not, and as for Twitter, I will make no more age remarks for fear of giving offense - and just say neither I nor my friends pay it the slightest heed - we like more depth than a few pithy phrases can provide.
But whether we buy the papers or not, we see the headlines, Camilla with a knife in Australia, William and Kate at the Taj - there is far less royal news these days and I take that both as declining interest among the press, but also among the people in everyday royal duties, and possibly in royalty in general. This is something William and Kate must consider - they may be hot news now, but they have only to look at Charles to see how things will be in twenty years time - now the press isn't there, he wants it.
And for William and the press, it is a bad marriage and like all bad marriages, there is fault on both sides. We all know about the nasty articles but there has been a lot of provocation from William's side as well - I still remember how the British press respected William's wish that there be no photographs when he and Kate went to church at Christmas - only for them to be published all over the world by the international press. The press is a business - I'm always surprised when people treat it as something horrible that they want to make money - the same people would never say that about a shop - and this sort of thing caused the respectful press a lot of money, with nothing in return - and over and over, William and Kate have given the local press nothing. Kate going to the Huffington Post was, I suspect, the final straw - and the press showed their power - she might as well not have troubled for the attention she got, it was reported, but as subtly as possible - given little coverage, even in Hello!. I would love to see both sides make their peace - but incidents such as not allowing a British reporter and photographer - and I agree with Claudia, a rota would be best at this point, is bound to lead to bad feelings and even reporters such as Ingrid Seward who are not known for anything negative are getting impatient.
As for that visit to William and Kate's flat - that was, I suspect due to the president and his press for the most part - thank you, Mr Obama, for that, I'm very grateful. It's not the first time, the U.S. president and the royals have had differing views on the press, the queen was said to truly like Mr Reagan, but was taken aback when he allowed the reporters to shout questions to him when they went riding. I think William and Kate do need to make a gesture - a beau geste to the British press to make up for hikes with just one grudging photo, and the like - perhaps some surprise - and overall allowing more inclusive coverage - and hopefully some of the bad feeling from the royal reporters especially, will settle down before it does real damage, because I do feel the monarchy needs the press more than the press needs the monarchy - the latter exists in many countries with no monarchy but if the press stopped completely on royal news, the monarchy would suffer in the end. I always think of The Wasteland - this is the way (the world) ends - not with a bang, but a whimper.

    1. I agree that reports of the media's demise is probably exaggerated Julia, but they are struggling. I have no problem with the royals using social media if it's in addition to the press, not instead of. Circumventing the press is not a smart option, as you've said.

Richard Palmer may have said it best on Twitter this week "What antagonizes the media is that KP is trying to compete and beat us by putting out pics first via social media. It seems to many of us a crazy strategy to cater to a relatively small number of people on social media and upset mass media."

Again, 650,000 follow KP on Twitter, and I'd say at least half are Americans! I wonder how many are UK accounts? There are about 65 million people in the UK, so quite a difference! Palmer believes "spin doctors will lose their jobs over this mistaken strategy" - I'd have to agree.

    2. Julia, I enjoy reading your insightful comments. I agree with you on almost every front. I hope there is no abdication by the Queen or those in the line of succession, as I believe it irrevocably weakens the institution. The public will tolerate Charles as King, only because William and Kate are in the wings. Abdication by William would be catastrophic to the monarchy.

I'm pleased William, Kate, and Harry have focused on the very worthy cause of mental health. These types of engagements and activities are a great way to grab and hold the public's interest in this important issue.

    3. Oh dear, I really can't stay out of this Press thing because I would dearly love to debate with Julia and Claudia (both of whom I respect) about this. Julia--yes, indeed, it is a bad marriage between William and the Press but the Press' faux pas predate William's by quite a bit. From their treatment of Diana from engagement days (the infamous see-through skirt) to calling Kate "waity Katie" and her mother "doors to manual" (sure, other people might have said it, but did they really need to repeat it?).... And Claudia, when you say that we North American Anglophiles are way, way more obsessed with the Royals than the Brits are that is absolutely true. But that has been true for years since Diana. The old-school monarchists are now well into (or past in my case) middle age. I have been watching The Queen at 90 for the past couple of days and my American husband said "What IS this obsession you have with the British royalty?" I said it was tradition, my mother had copies of books about the Queen Mother in our bookcase (very respectful, mostly photo books with a little biography--things were way more circumspect in the 1950s) and I bought all of the Diana books I could. And William & Kate souvenir magazines--People, Time, etc. As I have said before, my British family have no recent Royal memorabilia. They have some Coronation china from Elizabeth's father's time. My English ex-husband laughingly gave me a wine glass with an etching of Prince William's birth 30 years ago saying "You go in for this sort of stuff don't you"?
The press was as responsible for bringing down Charles and Diana's marriage as anyone. Ditto Andy and Fergie's. They tried very hard to bring down W & K's relationship but failed. Not out of maliciousness but because they are amoral--they will print, they will make up stories, whatever will sell copy. They need to stay alive in today's society which in many ways resembles the Roman Coliseum--people want drama, they want angst. The proliferation of reality TV shows demonstrates that. Yes, there were some old-school Royal reporters who weren't (aren't) like that. But they won't sell newspapers either and that is the sad fact. W & K being happy and normal won't sell newspapers to that generation either. So letting in a Royal reporter to photograph the family in KP would only have mattered to a select few. Not the 65 million people in the UK that Claudia quoted. The problem with statistics is that every publication of "polls" can spin things differently. A poll taken last Fall by yougov.uk claimed that 7 out of 10 Britons think that the monarchy will still be around in 100 years; the percentage of over 60s who agree with that is 8 out of 10. But in 2006 it was way lower--only 4 in 10. So, I would take your points Julia and Claudia (don't fall over in a faint) that things can change and if the monarchy wants to stick around for the next 100 years, they'd better have a grand celebration every 2-3 years or so. So, step up to the plate Harry and plan your wedding for two years from now!! And then have a baby in two years, etc., etc....

It was a bad day at the office for that particular media outlet. So one wonders are they trustworthy...newsworthy......or???

Sarah it is most definitely not just you! I agree completely with Julia and Claudia as well.
It seems to be a case of William winning short-term battles, but in a war with the press, I believe he would lose. As Julia said, the BRF needs the press more than they need the royal family. William's refusal to work with them is going to come back to bite him in the a!! in the end, IMO.

  27. Ingrid Seward in Camilla Tominey's Sunday article has nothing but good things to say about the couple. Therein lies a problem as people are been quoted in articles to suite the agenda of the article and after a while it is no longer believable to readers. Probably a reduced number of royal correspondents and photographers should be the way to go. At the moment everyone is battling to get a word in and readers no longer know what is believable or not. If there were fewer numbers, I think a better relationship would exist between palace and media.

    1. To accept your argument you also have to accept the fact that people may have been quoted to suit the agenda of this article as well.

(WK&H) I Sure hope when Harry picks a Wife that She fits right in & All 4 can have a Blast!:) Somehow I can't imagine Harry choosing a gal who doesn't have a good sense of humor:) Loved seeing "The Uniform" again:) or some variation of... It shows how much variation there's been that it looks like an old friend:) The out takes of Kate trying not to laugh were The Best! Who was it here that was struggling to find a word to describe Catherine's more "Confident" Vibe? Well I can't quite find The Words either, but I Totally "Get" what you're going for.... Something like being more comfortable in her own skin, or settling into her own sense of self as Wife/Mother & Duchess? But it's there & it's great to see!:)

Many factors played into this generation's close-knit relationship, and it's great to see. I too hope Harry finds a very down to earth wife who shares not only a great sense of humor but also his interest in the military--to be a great team mate with him like Kate is to William. I loved the out-takes too!

I feel like the royal family has been much more public-friendly recently! Perhaps it's because of HM's 90's birthday, but I simply adore this stuff... Seeing one of the rooms in the Cambridge's KP apartment was such a treat and in my opinion gave a significant level of access to them that we hadn't had before now. In this video today, we saw a bit more personality. Love it. <3

On a positive note I have to say right now I'm very happy William and Kate actually have been out and about this week. I was fully expecting to not to see them for a month after the tour since that is what they did after the Aussie tour

Just a little comment to say how much I enjoy this blog. Down here in New Zealand so far away from every other country, everything important overseas seems to happen in the middle of the night. When I skype my son and daughter in law in San Francisco I have to calculate what time it is there. (For the record it is four hours ahead in time but yesterday's date.)Yet somehow here on this blog I feel I am actually sharing real time conversations with you all and it is great getting different points of view. And we can mostly disagree without getting mad at each other. I get the impression that Charlotte doesn't have to edit us out very often. Keep it up everyone and thank you Charlotte.

I didn't know there was such an avenue to do that. How awesome. How appropriate. How sweet and thoughtful of you. :)

I want Charlotte to receive many much deserved blog awards also, and to be given an OBE or something for her superb support of the Royal family and to the field of Journalism in general.

I do not have the knowledge or confidence at the moment to know how to perhaps iniate those things. My prayer is that I miraculously somehow figure it out or that someone talented in those things here takes the tender loving care to iniate and accomplish those worthy and noble recognitions due to her. I believe there is enough love and appreciation for Charlotte here to somehow make those honors realities. I know her dedication, Joy, love, skill, integrity and artistic talents have enhanced and blessed my life in innumerable ways. And often just when I needed it the most. I believe many of us feel that way. Her blogs are something good for posterity, for the records, and I hope she gets all the recognition she so truly deserves, and soon.

Does anyone know anything about how to get the ball rolling of these blessings for her? I am sure the OBE's come about by someone, somehow, bringing to the attention of the Royal contingent that handles that, the names of worthwhile candidates. As for the blog awards, I have no idea at the moment where to start. Any suggestions? I am not being lazy, btw. I just am not so savvy a techie at the moment, although I have improved light years from where I started. lol. I am just asking for suggestions. Often, nothing happens, until someone cares. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to thank you but it was the last week of the school holidays & today's also Anzac Day as Annette NZ mentioned. We got up at 3.0 a.m. to go to the Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial as it was the 100th Dawn Service & we wanted the kids to be part of it. Very moving & immense sense of gratitude to the veterans & to servicemen & women currently deployed. Afterwards we picked up gran & took her out to brunch. I read out your comments & she was really stoked. We talked about the Queen's 90th birthday & she had some cool things to say. I recorded her talking on my phone & when I've got a moment I'll write it up. But right now the 3.0 a.m. start is catching up with me.......

Hope everyone has a great week & that Courtney is OK.

  43. I must congratulate Charlotte on all her very hard work producing so many very informative blogs on the India tour and other events since. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them all.
Since returning from their tour both Kate and William have been seen in a lighter vein and I feel more of the real Kate has appeared. We have seen rather more of William's character due to the many Programmes about the Queen where he has figured prominently and Kate's participation in the ITV documentary though somewhat cruelly heavily criticised gave us a little more insight into her character however the last two events have shown more of the true Kate & William. It was quite a surprise to see a little of their home at Kensington Palace and I thought Prince George was lovely and so well behaved. The video of W,K & H was great they were all so natural and their reactions so totally genuine it is such a pity that as far as we are aware Harry is not courting it could be a long time before he gets married.
I suspect W & K may well return to Norfolk now for the next week or so to celebrate their wedding anniversary and Charlotte's birthday and no doubt William will be undertaking some work with the Air Ambulance Harry of course will be off to America at the end of the week for I think about 2 weeks.
The press are clearly still not altogether happy with W & K though quite often contradicting themselves one day a scathing article on K followed a day or two later by a very complementary article by the same correspondent however some of the topics raised by the DM are disgraceful and at times may well be rather hurtful to K. Referring to the DM there is an article in the paper today sayng that Rebecca Deacon and Nick Loughran split at the end of last year after 2 years together and he is now going out with a member of Prince Harry's staff. If true that must be difficult for Rebecca as they all work in close proximity.
I hope Kate does not disappear for too long as she should now build on the success of the last few weeks and should undertake considerably more public charitable engagements as well as the Royal ones she will be undertaking connected to the Queen's official Birthday. She needs to build her confidence in public speaking and to address the still perceived image that she is workshy one royal tour followed by a few occasional engagements will not do that.

I'm an American and strongly believe in free press, but I have to say I think the British press are as a group the most vicious bunch of jackals I have ever read. I cannot imagine being a public figure and thus at their mercy. I am always shocked that there seems to be no degree of impartiality in their reporting. At our worst, the American press has at least thinly veiled lack of bias.

  47. This may be kind of a wacky thought, but do you think part of the reason for W&H's interest in supporting mental health is to do with knowing the struggles their mother experienced both as a child from a divorced set of parents and as a young woman struggling with eating issues?

It could well be. It is also worth noting that the Duchess of York came from a broken marriage also and had issues with her weight which wouldn't have been helped by being labelled "Duchess of Pork". Anyone in the public eye can be badly affected by such comments and the intense media attention. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden who I admire very much, had anorexia in her early years and went to study in USA where presumably she didn't have such intense scrutiny. The trouble is when you are in the public eye so much you can't afford to have a day when you just throw on your "uniform" and don't worry about the makeup because you are just popping down to the shops! Just imagine having to look your best every single day!

I just googled Prince Harry at the three London Anzac Day services and was very impressed how he conducted himself. I enjoy his sense of humour but on this more serious occasion he performed impeccably. He looked quite moved at times and I wondered if he was thinking about his visit to Gallipoli last year. ( And his beard really suits him. It makes him look more mature and more like his forebears.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Prince Harry has a very soft heart and is comfortable with his emotions and is SO so sincere when it comes to his feelings for the military's service and sacrifice.

His personality is shown a lot in the documentary, "Elizabeth at 90", especially his big smiles while viewing the Queen surrounded by wiggly puppies, "so sweet!", he kept saying.

The documentary really shows the contrast between William and Harry as they watch the old films - both sincere and seemingly kind, but Harry is more free with his sense of humor and expression of himself where William is a bit more reserved.

Prince Harry seems to be a real gem of a person (not that William isn't) whose light just exudes from him.

Lucky girl, lucky children he will one day have (did I just sound like Yoda....?). :)

      Delete
    2. I recall reading an article about him not that long ago where someone was quoted as saying that the army was the making of Harry, and turned him from an immature young man into one with focus. And it shows today. London is 8 hours ahead of where I live, and before I went to bed last night I saw the photos of the dawn ceremony at Hyde Park. I've always thought Harry is adorable (his inner scamp!) but I like the new more mature Harry too.

  55. Here are my gran’s thoughts on the royals & duty from our Anzac Day brunch:

'”The Queen's a remarkable woman by any measure. It's easy to admire her because she's 90 & you can see this long life spread out before you & everything she's achieved. You can't do this when people are young like the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge because there's no perspective. You have to sit back & see how it unfolds. So far they’re doing fine & they’ve ticked the all important box of securing the succession with Prince George & Princess Charlotte.

When it comes to duty it’s been uncomplicated for the Queen but much more difficult for Charles & William. What I mean is that she became Queen very young and the role of the constitutional monarch comes with duties - a whole raft of them. So it's been much more straightforward for her. She hasn't had to work out what she's supposed to do.

Charles has spent most of his life trying to find a meaningful role as Prince of Wales. There are no duties specified for this role other than to support the Queen in her role. Apart from what the Queen has asked him to do it's been up to him. To his credit he's done an admirable job with the Duchy of Cornwall and his charitable foundations. He's also worked hard but he was miserable & moody for long periods when he was younger. There was a lot of talk at the time that he should have continued on in his naval career.

As for William - well if the heir to the throne has spent all his life trying to find a meaningful role & purpose then what do you do if you're the second in line to the throne? I think the royal family has learnt a lot of lessons & not just from the experience of Diana but also from Charles's struggle to define his role & give it substance. He's created a framework that William can step up to when the time comes.

On the media – well asking the tabloids to have high journalistic standards is like asking a leopard to change its spots. The treatment they dished out to the Countess of Wessex & Princess Anne when they were younger was brutish. Ditto Diana & Fergie. Even the Queen got some criticism during the Thatcher years. The more recent News of the World saga was appalling & it’s a bit much asking that William, Catherine & Harry play happy chappies with the media when their experience is having their phones illegally hacked hundreds of times. The relationship with the BBC is generally good but has its tense moments. They’ve just had unprecedented access to the RF to make the documentary on the Queen at 90 & that’s an example of a ‘win win’ situation.

I’m nearly 90 & one of the things I’ve learnt is that most of the things I worried about never happened. The royal family has weathered plenty of storms & crises. I’m just happy to still be around to see what happens next. “

On the matter of the photographer, which has been much discussed here, the President's official photographer will have high US government security clearance, and therefore can be in the immediate vicinity of the president indoors. That would not be true of any British photographer, who would not need or have US security clearance. Therefore, inside KP there was only the American photographer.
