Kate became patron of the 1851 Trust in October 2014, and her love of sailing and sports has made the fledgling organisation a good fit. At the time she said: "I'm delighted to be royal patron of the 1851 Trust. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence." HRH has carried out several engagements with the organisation since.
The trust was launched in tandem with Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie's bid to enter a team in the America's Cup in 2017, with the aim of bringing the trophy back to Britain for the first time since 1851. The Trust works to enable, engage and encourage young people from a wide demographic to experience sailing and give them options to continue in the sport.
Kate was greeted by Sir Ben Ainslie upon arrival.
Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Lindsay Fox curtseyed as she greeted the Duchess. The day saw the Duchess participating in a number of activities beginning with the launch of the 1851 Trust's two flagship sailing projects for 2016 aimed at getting young people from diverse backgrounds into the sport.
The Duchess officially opened the new 'Tech Deck' Education Centre at the heart of the base, by unveiling a mural she contributed to on a previous visit.
Readers will recall Kate put the finishing touches to the mural during her February 2015 visit.
The centre will showcase the sport's innovation, technology and sustainability for schools and community groups.
Kate met students who are participating in a digital workshop.
Sir Ben showed Kate a model vessel.
The centre is an interactive showcase for sport, sustainability and innovation.
It includes sections with real-life scenarios exploring topics such as generating power, steering and stability, materials and strength, control versus speed, measuring performance, and clothing and equipment, as well as the opportunity to view the nerve centre of this awe-inspiring challenge to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain.
Kate viewed several exhibits.
The Duchess joined students from a local school who are taking part in the STEM crew digital workshop activity on iPads.
A key aim of the 1851 Trust is to address the current STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) education crisis by engaging young people with these subjects. The education programme will focus on the science, technology, engineering and maths of the America’s Cup challenge.
There are plans underway to launch a suite of free resources and opportunities online later this year. More from the official website:
'Activities with clear links to the UK national curriculum will be provided for use within Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Design and Technology and Biology classes, together with cross-curricular opportunities to talk about STEM careers. For example, students will use speed, distance and time to analyse team performance; learn the theory and practice of geometry through the context of bearings; understand the importance of diet and nutrition for crew performance and design kit that works as hard as the crew.'

When Kate, a keen yachtswoman in her youth, was introduced to some of the young sailors outside the team headquarters, she told one group: "I'd really like to get out on the water more. Sir Keith Mills, chairman of the 1851 Trust, said: "We can fix that."

Kate took the wheel for about half of the hour-long session, steering the 45ft catamaran at speeds of up to 40mph.
Ben said Kate is "certainly keen" to get George and Charlotte sailing in the future. Describing Kate as a natural sailor he continued "We were all really impressed, she's clearly done a fair amount of sailing before. She supports the team heavily and is very involved with what we do. We'd love to get her racing with us as well if we can, we'll see." For the World Series the team is allowed to take a guest."
Kate was very much in her element and appeared to be having a fantastic time.
Following a fantastic day, Kate said goodbye to Sir Ben and Sir Keith Mills. Sylvia kindly informed me Keith Mills is a founder and director of the British America’s Cup team, Land Rover BAR. Kate cut a stylish figure in her nautical looking Alexander McQueen separates today. It is the third time the Duchess has worn the ensemble (known as a three-peat among fashion fans). The military style blouse and matching skirt were debuted by Kate in 2011 for a visit to Birmingham and worn again in 2014 for Kate's visit to Bletchley Park. I love this look on Kate, it's very chic, well tailored and fits in with the theme of today's engagement.

In other news, the Duchess sent a message of support to attendees at ICPCN (International Children's Palliative Care Network) conference yesterday. As you can see, a new official photo of Kate was used at the event. Kate's wearing a beige or cream-coloured jacket; it's possible the photo was taken outside Kensington Palace, and I'm sure we'll see a high-res version of the picture in the not-too-distant future.
The second annual conference in Beunos Aires brings together people from around the world and from all professions who work with children experiencing life-threatening and life-limiting conditions, and encourages the exchange of knowledge, new and innovative ideas, research and experiences between them.
As patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices, Kate has learned a great deal about palliative care and it's great to see her supporting other organisations working in the area.

I just adore this outfit! It's one of my Kate's favourite. Every time she wears it, it suits her perfectly! She also has a straighter hairstyle than normal.

I did not see a put down just an individual pointing out long loose hair is not always the best way to go. I think people would like to see her less rote and varying hairstyles is one way to go. I would like to see her try a French braid. It beautiful hair and most young women would love to experiment with hair like that.
DeleteOfc Anon 15.30. Just pointing out that hair up would have worked well is nothing bad. It's when it comes to tallying it that it start to get bitter undertones. I've not seen anyone say they're gonna tally how often she makes a kid laugh or how often she hunches down to their level. Somehow, this counting always happen around things that the counter percive as negative. Flowing hair, skirts blowing and sport events are the only things I've seen counted. I think that while statistics can be rather objective, the use of it is often very subjective.

On the ether hand, this is the comment section, not the compliment section. I think it is okay to make comments that are not complimentary as long as they are not abusive or cross a line. ReplyDeleteThis ensemble has never been one I've liked. Kate wears it well and I can tell it is a favorite of hers. I'm glad she feels comfortable in it. But, for me personally, I truly dislike the outfit. First, it reminds me of a shirt Michael Jackson wore a long time ago. Second, the gold buttons on the chest and lower abdomen area are a huge turn-off for me. I am short in height with a very short torso, so this outfit would never work for me. This is just a matter of personal preference. It is not a criticism of Kate at all.

I think that she always looks fantastic, but I don't like what she's wearing so it's probably me. She's just so gorgeous and I love her work, the causes she has joined and promotes. ReplyDeleteI like this organization. It might not be the heavy hitter charity that we are used to. But I really like that through a hobby and something fun they are inspiring young people into STEM. We need these people in society in the future, and I think there is huge value to getting people (especially girls) into these kinds of areas! This seems like a great place equipped for learning. Who knows, one of these kids might be the one to innovate the futures next big thing!
I like this look. And I see why she likes it as well :) But I would hope to see it mixed up. A ponytail would work great with this. Or maybe wear the blouse with jeans on a more casual engagement. The skirt would look great with her new Goat blouse. Or maybe even her red blazer. Oh well, she still looks stunning and most people dont follow her as closely as we do so they wouldnt immedeatly see "oh it's a repeat" :P Although, I like the clutch!! :D

DeleteI would rather think it your way than the other way around. The chemistry seems obvious mutually, but by now, I am feeling sensitive for William. The other day I was thinking, if her husband is my brother, what I would have suggested to him. Some how I got reminded of Aristotle Onassis and JFK and Jackie O. One never knows what starts as some rendezvous can end up down the line. This is not the first time this opinion is widely by many people about Sir Ben and Kate.
I noticed the unmistakable chemistry between Catherine and Sir Ben from the very first, too. My immediate thought was: Well, if she didn't have a prince she might choose this sailor....

Everywhere--even at the dinner table. Same age as DoC. I think it may be an age/era thing like peeling manicures and tats. (As well as one the usual ripe-for-mating signals like stroking the stems of wine glasses that female creatures give off.)

DeleteHa! I just had a chance to catch on my favourite blog and ran into all this! I agree, I immediately thought the same thing when I saw those two together... chemistry, to be sure! But I also agree that it's all in good fun ;) There are some people who you just click with because of your character and interests - it's totally normal and inevitable. Of course, what one does with that chemistry afterwards can turn into something not so innocent, but that's obviously not the case here.
DeleteAnd I have a married older brother too, whose wife is a very intelligent and very stunning, and he sees men (coworkers, waiters, everybody!) smitten by her all the time! He says it's normal and he's gotten to use to it. It even makes him somewhat proud, because at the end of the day, that jewel of a women coming home to him. I imagine the Prince feels the same way about his Princess... :)
Perfect outfit for the occasion, and one I especially like. Nice that Kate's hair is not overwhelming it this time. The blouse must have been made for her without the peplum. It looks much nicer tucked in. I have never liked quilted bags, but Kate found a way to use this one so that it is not highly visible. Her other accessories are lovely. She always looks very happy at these sailing events.

I know there are some among us who think this is a fluff patronage and elitist, but the connection to STEM surely elevates it substantially from that. I didn't fully realize the focus on the sciences. It reminds me of my son's physics class in high school. One of the things the class did was take a field trip and do some zip lining to learn about the physics of it. Relating sciences to sport and activity is the best way to engage young people. DeleteSpeaking of science and such, navigation, etc. Did you know that the tried and true sextant, used for sea navigation for centuries, is being sent along on the first manned-flight to Mars just in case they have any problems with the electronic GPS. The crew is being taught how to use that for interplanetary application. The manned-flight is scheduled for 2026, btw.

Charlotte, you must have had so much fun updating this post as the day developed! I love it that Kate actually participated in sailing with the team. And her changing outfits were neat - McQueen to official sailing clothes to plain top and jeans with no jewelry. I hope all of those who criticized Kate's previous sailing shoes like these striking ones, though I wondered why she was not in boat shoes. Anyway, such a fun day for Kate and for us!

ReplyDeleteI love this charity, as a female chemist, still actively involved in a scientific field, I can't stress enough how important it is to keep children engaged in STEM. So many people have a negative feeling towards these subjects and they don't all have to be as boring as long division. LOL! It's a great way to show how fun these subjects can truly be. I hope it inspires many to pursue the sciences in their future.
Kate looks great and as one poster above said, it looks like maybe the shirt was customized for Kate to be without the peplum. I agree that it looks much better tucked in and much more polished. I love her little clutch and it struck me seeing it today how long it has been since she has carried it. I have one just like it from Calvin Klein in black that I found back in 2011 as my repli-Kate and I just love it. Mine doesn't look as good as hers after 5 years and needs a little TLC.
I hope we do get to see the updated official photo of Kate. It almost looks like she is wearing the same McQueen jacket she did for the WWI commemorations in France a few years ago before Charlotte was born. It's great to see her branching out in the way she supports her charities as well. There are many ways to lend support other than official visits.
I hope we get to see the official tour portrait for India/Bhutan as well. I found on line one day the one for the AUS/NZ tour and it included George. Kate was wearing her blue jacket/skirt suit by Rebecca Taylor. Maybe the one for India/Bhutan includes him and Charlotte.

ReplyDeleteI am just so happy to see that she is growing out her fringe. It seems like she is growing her hair out back to the way it used to be. I think with the fringe style her hair often got in her way, especially at speaking engagements. Now we can see her face more fully.

ReplyDeleteI love the look, A LOT, but it does make it hard to distinguish this visit from the others. I first saw the pictures and thought "wait...is this today's visit or a previous occasion." Although the post mentioned that the organization exposes kids from broad demographics to sailing, I really do hope that's the case. In general, people today, regardless of affluence, do not get enough exposure to nature (which we also increasingly know is vital for mental health). How much so kids of modest or no means in cities––I hope they really get a chance to benefit from this organization's work. Now, I know HRH is a great sportswoman and always has been––but it's instances like climbing up to the Bhutan monastery w/out so much as a trickle of sweat or when she clambers on to this enormous sailing vehicle (I would have been TERRIFIED) that you know she is truly the real deal. I mean, yes, she has an athletic body but many women do because of sheer indoor gym time. You KNOW HRH thrives with the outdoors (and I LOVE that she answered that taking a walk makes her happy at the Heads Together event–it was a real personal reflection about HER and was not compelled to give the "being a mom" answer. LOVE IT). On another note, gosh, Sir Ben might have been stealing the show attention away from HRH today. Just saying ;) Silvia
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. It is very hard to tell the difference between the photos. I think it is a great outfit but she should change it up each time. Otherwise, it is all the same.

Time to retire this outfit or at least not to wear it to any nautical themed even -- she looks far to cartoon like in a nautical inspired set at this point now - it was OK in 2011 but as said, time to retire this one - or re-invent it somehow.

I guess it was a given that this outfit would make a showing at a 1851 engagement as the nautical theme is apparent. In 2011, I wasn't crazy about this McQueen ensemble. I thought it was severe and too Sergeant Pepper-ish. However, it has grown on me. The fit is great and she looks amazing in it. It is interesting, has nice elements and has a youthful feel. Like others, I wish she had changed up each wear so that it is easier to differentiate between the engagements. Also, I would love to see the skirt and top with other separates.

Great to see the sailing gear too as it's likely to be state of the art technology for aerodynamics, wind & water resistance, thermal properties etc. Her shoes look cool but also have non-mark soles otherwise she wouldn't be able to wear dark soled shoes on the boat.
ReplyDeleteDon't know how many other commenters have sailed in a racing catamaran but it's just exhilarating! It's the closest thing to feeling like you're flying - these boats move at incredible speed over the surface of the water & you're hanging over the side with the spray & wind. Awesome to see the 1851 Trust involving kids from a wide range of backgrounds in this sport & teaching them skills & self confidence.
Rebecca - Sweden you're spot on - there are protocols about not wearing jewellery when sailing especially racing boats. All just common sense. When you're hanging over the side on a racing boat moving at high speed you need to be able to control your grip & a whacking great engagement ring would just get in the way as your hands move all the time as you adjust your position to the conditions. You're also likely to damage the ring & the boat. The other saying in sailing is don't wear any jewellery you don't want to gift to the water.
Ok I have started to ship Kate and Sir Ben in my far off imagination now !! They look supremely cute together:)
ReplyDeleteI would hate to be told that I should not wear a beautiful dress three times! Actually, I wish Kate would recycle her best outfits more often. That would eliminate the need for so many outfits, and she would always be beautiful in them! I am a bit distressed by the wastefulness and mediocre designs that would result from expecting a new frock for every engagement!
ReplyDeleteI also rather dislike pony tails, which seem to me to be teenage style. I do love Kate's low updo for formal occasions. For normal daytime events, her hair looks nice down, or partly back if she needs it out of her way. With the fringe growing out, she should be able to have her elegan half up look back. But I hope she keeps the rest of her hair at a reasonable length, proportional to her body and her daytime look.

DeleteI think Kate looked beautiful in that outfit. I think it was very appropriate for the venue. I do not think it looked "cartoonish" at all. I think she can repeat that outfit as many times as she wants as long as it continues to look new and not worn out. I think she looked beautiful in her sailing attire and in the outfit she wore for her ride home. (Maybe she had those on under her sailing outfit?) She certainly enjoyed all those handsome men (and who wouldn't) and she enjoyed the children. Quite a compliment that they think she is seaworthy enough to be a guest on their racing team.
ReplyDeleteI think her paternal grandfather, Peter, taught her to sail, as he took that up when he retired from flying. Another successful day supporting a worthwhile charity. Nice to know that the founder and director of the British America's Cup is also the Chairman of William, Kate and Harry's Charity Foundation. That probably made her even more at ease there. Loved seeing her have so much fun.

ReplyDeleteThis would have been the perfect opportunity for her to say a few words, a few remarks, a mini speech if you will.
ReplyDeleteAs everyone has noted, she is clearly in her element, very comfortable with the engagement and her hosts! And being that relaxed is half the battle with public speaking. If I had her ear I would encourage her to make even brief remarks at very friendly events like this, it's an easy way to improve. She could make big strides quickly.
As far as the outfit, it reminds me of some Diana wore. And in my opinion, they are so distinctive it's hard to wear them more than once, twice at most - just think if you wore something very specific to a wedding, it would be hard to wear it to another. But accessorizing it differently, or different hairstyle etc might have helped.
I'd love to discuss the Prince Andrew news but won't hijack Charlotte's Kate blog :) It's worth noting for younger royal watchers that the Queen has many strengths and talents, but as we've seen repeatedly, managing her family correctly is sadly not one of them.
I think that a discussion of Andrew is relevant, in that it shows what can happen when privilege goes unchecked -- or not checked well. And I couldn't agree more that the Queen has not dealt with Andrew well. I don't think he's learnt a thing, other than mummy will come rolling in to bail him out. I was actually surprised to see the second part come out in the DM today; I thought the palace lawyers might have quashed it.
DeleteI have just read the story about Prince William landing his helicopter in a school playing field to pick up a critically injured woman. And introducing himself to the school, being very polite and natural. You know, he just quietly goes about doing his "work"--the first time in history a heir apparent also has a job. AND he donates his salary to charity. I do think he deserves some credit for what he does.

Kate may not match Anne's numbers but she does do some significant initiatives and she is always upbeat and pleasant and clearly in love with William. She may not always meet everyone's expectations in being busy enough or wearing the perfect outfit every time but dear heavens she has a lot of good things she brings to all her endeavors. William completed college, extensive military training, has been pretty much a good boy hopefully since marriage, dotes on his children, and seems to be ready to pick up the reins whenever duty calls. We could have gotten a royal like some of his more flamboyant and obnoxious predecessors. William and Kate certainly aren't perfect. I mean just think of it. Kate flicks her hair when giving speeches. She seems a little nervous about public speaking. She isn't always a perfect 10 in her outfit choices and she holds her hands in front of her at events (as do many others, btw). And she actually wore her hair with fringe once or twice. OH DEAR. I mean let's keep things in the proper perspective. These two are doing the very best they can and I think they are doing a great job it it. All criticisms about them, by the very virtue that they are sincerely trying their best, amounts to nothing more the idle nit picking.

DeletePart of me dislikes when women are criticised for repeating outfits or wearing outfits that are similar. Look at the way men dress! Why aren't women "allowed" to repeat the same or similar outfits? Although, admittedly, the criticism is few and far between,and most comments are positive, it's just a small irritation of mine regarding the way women are perceived versus men at times. Kate has a serious role. She is not a fashion model.

ReplyDeleteBen Ainslie got married last year to a sports announcer Georgia Thompson and said she was "the most beautiful woman in the world" so he can't be too smitten with the DoC. Incidentally his wife is blonde and very short compared to him, quite unlike Kate.

It is a bit too much because it is obvious, and commented by so many beyond this blog also. One of the reasons of following Kate is the mystery and chemistry between her and William.

There is a special some one out there in the world for every person. Some are lucky to meet, and some are not. Then again, there is also some one out there for every person, where timing, fate and circumstance did not allow it to happen. When there is such chemistry and a meeting occurs, if both are married, it should not continue to create an image of possibility in the public's mind especially in this case.
Oh by the way, my take on this is, they can both be associating everything with an activity they both love, in this case sailing. Between delight of hobby and delight of personality, a chemistry had been well sparked as well.

ReplyDeleteI've never liked this outfit - I think it's the navy strips across the chest- but I don't object to her repeating things as many times as she likes. It's also great to see her out on the water. Sports like this, particularly combined with STEM, can be thought of as something just for boys so it's great that a glamorous public figure is shown getting stuck in.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it's great that she as a woman is lifting this subject since it's more common still for boys than girls to be encouraged into STEM subjects! And if a princess (which is seen as very girly) focuses on this it can have greater impact, just like William the stoic and buttoned up male traditionalist talking about the value of talking about your emotions will have more impact than if he was a more "publically emotional" guy.

Sailing is not "restricted to the supremely wealthy"! I once owned a sailboat, and I am certainly not in that category. What you mean by yachting I am not sure, but many, many ordinary Britons can afford to sail, some by purchasing a boat and more by going on a charter sail.
DeleteHere in San Diego at the harbor yacht club you can pay a small nominal fee and get lessons and then use one of their fleet of rental sailboats, again at a small fee because of that particular program they have made available. One of the guys at the AT&T store near here (who loves to see me walk thru their door with yet another question on how to use my phone, lol), he is a member of that program and goes sailing almost every weekend. He is definitely not one would call wealthy.
DeleteTotally agree with your comments about sailing Anon 23:19. Here in Australia kids usually get involved through the Sea Scouts or sailing clubs. There wouldn't be sailing at the Olympics without all the mums & dads turning up every weekend during the season for the racing & volunteering/fund raising year round for the clubs. If we want a sail on a racing catamaran then we also go on a charter sail or crew for a boat. There are plenty of affordable options.

Also, they have just teamed up with other organizations to let kids try sailing out for free. Yes, the people who own the boats are rich, but I assume that most people that sail do it on another persons boat through an organization. The one thing no one seems to know unless your kid sails. The kids work Darn Hard! They are up Each Summer Day at The Crack of Dawn Taking care of these big big boats! They prep them, rig them up & then have classes that are like Geometry Class meets Race Strategy & Weather Analyzing Wind Patterns, how to Read them & How to know what to do with your Sails, Rudder, & tacking to adjust to changing winds during racing! Then After Hours out on the water under the beating sun. They come in & have to Clean & Wash the Boat from Stem to Stern, which can inc launching the Boat onto land & tipping it til it's laying on its side to scrub it down underneath if it's been to or going to another lake, for ecological reasons, to not transfer parasitic barnacles etc between lakes! Then they take the rigging down, rolling up a sails & Jib & Mast. After Everything's down & packed up the boat gets covered & secured just as the sun is going down. The kids come home wiped but ready for some time off before the alarm goes off the next morning & it starts all over again!:) We invested in our own Boats but lots of kids used ones owned by the Yacht Club & when our Sons aged out of their XBoats, we Donated them to The Sailing School so others didn't have to buy! Plus many boats if any shape & size are sold over & over again!Once you know how to Sail, You can Sail Around The World or Race All Around The World even making your way to The Americas Cup! Many Wealthy People & Sponsor Companies Buy Expensive Boats for Competing! They Need Sailors to Sail Them! Every Boat Needs a Winning Crew & Very Rarely is The Boat Owner The Best Sailor! They may Sail but It's All About Hiring a Winning Team! We know Many Guys in their 20-40s who are Professional Sailors! Sailing/Competing all around the world in the Most Elite Races!
Even our (almost) Penniless Son is working in The Boat Industry (as he figures his future) Specializing in Sailboats & He's Racing on some of the Nicest Boats & it doesn't cost him a Penny, because The Rich Guys who come in & Buy these Big Expensive Sailboats, well they need a Crew & Someone who knows how to Win a Race & Make These Guys & Their Boats..."Champions" as in "Get Them Some Trophies! (aka "Hardware") Last but not least is "Kate's Sailing Outfit! Sadly to whoever thought it was too "Matchy Matchy" That's what you wear when you are on a Sailing Crew:) We've got lots if Henri Lloyd at out House & esp re: the wind pants she was wearing? The Gear you Wear can save you from Harsh Biting Winds & can Save you from Hypothermia with its High Tech Fabrics if you go overboard or just really wet!
So I Think I hit on all the points I felt passionate about & on things I wanted to Clarify! Sailing is Great; Fun; Builds Character; Enhances the Brain to absorb & enhance Mathamatical Comprehension & You can Do It Your Whole Life!:) You'll Also Make Friendships That Will Last A Lifetime!:) It's Just as Competitive & Difficult & Exciting as Any Other Sport Around!:)

ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte for another interesting post. A good role model engagement. Catherine looked lovely in a recycled outfit flagging that it is fine to repeat clothes. We live in a time of rampant consumerism and this highlights that it is ok to reuse. Then for the girls who don't think it is possible, the engagement showed that a girl can develop a skill set and be part of a male team. It also made sport look such a fun thing. And yes I know yachting is a wealthy sport but messing about in boats in the myriad of Britain's waterways is a very British thing and affordable for many. I fear for the current generation, majority already overweight, who eat badly and don't move. They are facing a lifetime of the misery of ill health and possibly shortened life expectancy. Then the emphasis on science and maths. There has been so much opportunity to learn in the last few decades and so little has been learnt. We should not have young people who have done the time at school and can hardly read and write. Catherine is a young beautiful woman who has used her time well.

ReplyDeleteI just have to say that my favorite part about any of this events clothing is the pants she actually wore sailing. I really wish she would wear more pants or slacks like these, even jeans like these. I am hopeful that the "skinny" jeans or yoga pants look goes out of style soon!! I think she looks way better in something a little looser, think its more flattering to her body type than the skin tight show every wrinkle pants! fingers crossed in montana!
