The engagement was an excellent choice for the Duchess who has been patron of the Natural History Museum since 2013. Since then she has carried out several public and private visits to the museum, even taking Prince George to view a dinosaur exhibit last year. Kate has long been passionate about the arts - graduating with a 2:1 in history of art from St Andrews in 2005 - and is a keen amateur photographer.
Kate was greeted by Stephen Deuchar director of the Art Fund.
The Art Fund Museum of the Year prize is awarded annually to one outstanding museum which has shown exceptional imagination, innovation and achievement in the preceding year. The prize of £100,000 is presented each year at an awards dinner attended by some of the UK’s leading figures in the arts and culture sector.
The prize champions what museums do, encourages more people to visit, and gets to the heart of what makes a truly outstanding museum. The prize goes to the museum or gallery that has best achieved some or all of the following criteria: undertaken projects that will provide a lasting legacy or have a transformative effect on the museum; brought its collections to life for audiences – engaging, inspiring and extending public understanding; delivered an original audience development, learning or outreach programme; clearly won the support and enthusiasm of its visitors and users.
Prior to the dinner, Kate met representatives from the finalist museums. Kate chatted about visiting the museum regularly with George and noted how much he loves 3D sculptures and dinosaur models. Emily Andrews shared this photo from the Museum.
On the menu tonight: Evesham asparagus and quail eggs with shaved summer truffle, granola and lemon oil for starters. The main course consisted of roast sea bream with courgette flowers, crushed Ratte potatoes and calamansi dressing. And for dessert, brown sugar meringue with blood orange and sugared candy floss and a negroni sauce.
Let's take a cursory look at the five museums shortlisted. First we have the Arnolfini. Founded in Bristol in 1961 and moved to its beautiful harbourside location 15 years later, since its inception it's been the city's cultural hub. Presenting an ambitious interdisciplinary programme of visual art, performance, dance, film and music, it welcomes half a million visitors each year to experience groundbreaking work by local, national and international artists.
Bethlem Museum of the Mind houses an internationally-renowned collection of archives, art and objects relating to the history of mental health care and treatment, dating back to 1555. Among the objects on display are metal and textile restraints, patient portraits from the 1850s, and the statues Raving and Melancholy Madness by Caius Gabriel Gibber, which were originally displayed at the hospital at Moorfields; plus an art collection of around a thousand works. Last year it was reopened by Grayson Perry (who attending the naming of Clore Art Room with Kate last year) after an impressive transformation, which has led to a dramatic increase in visitors. Given the connection to mental health, I imagine this one will be of particular interest to Kate.
Jupiter Artland is a unique award-winning sculpture collection twelve miles west of Edinburgh, and a charity committed to nurturing the work of contemporary artists and commissioning site-specific work. Jupiter Artland blends art, learning and nature to showcase the very best in established and emerging talent in contemporary art in a unique setting. In 2015, the organisation expanded by opening the newly constructed ballroom to create a counterpoint to the natural outdoor landscape.
Founded in 1852 following the enormous success of the Great Exhibition, the Victoria and Albert Museum is now home to more than 2.3 million objects from all over the world, ranging from textiles and fashion to sculpture, photography, furniture and more. 2015 also heralded the historic exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, which became the V & A’s bestselling exhibition, attracting a record-breaking 493,043 visitors from eighty-seven countries and generating an unprecedented amount of media coverage.
York Art Gallery was built in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, inspired by the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. It is now home to a superb collection of art spanning six-hundred years, including works by David Hockney, LS Lowry, Sarah Lucas, Paul Nash and Stanley Spencer, and the city's own William Etty. 2015 was a transformational year for York Art Gallery. In August 2015, its Grade II listed building reopened after an £8m development which increased its exhibition space by 60%, including three state-of-the-art galleries and the new Centre of Ceramic Art.

A smiling Kate leaving the museum. The Duchess debuted a new designer for the evening - London-based Brazilian-born Barbara Casasola.
Kate selected the designer's Off-the-Shoulder Mesh-Paneled Dress. The $2,210 midi dress is cut from figure-sculpting stretch-jersey and panelled with sheer mesh inserts for a sporty feel. Made in Italy, it it designed to create a flattering, feminine silhouette.

The dress is from the designer's minimalist Spring 2016 Collection.

Barbara Casasola is a very interesting choice of designer for Kate. She studied at Central Saint Martins and Milan’s Istituto Marangoni before going on to work at Roberto Cavalli. Today, she designs from her studio in London and despite her young age (32) is already a celebrity favourite, with her clientele including Kate Bosworth, Alicia Vikander and Gwyneth Paltrow. Her collections are described as "both elegant and relaxed, and are defined by a sophisticated use of colour".
A look at three styles from the designer: the Pleated Crepe de Chine Tunic, the Crepe de Chine Midi Dress, and the Stretch-Crepe Trench Coat.

The Duchess is very much embracing this season's incredibly popular 'cold shoulder' trend. Last month, she donned the off-the-shoulder Roland Mouret 'Nansen' gown for SportsAid's anniversary gala dinner.
Pinball Wizard identified Kate's new shoes as the Dollie Suede Sandals by Brazilian based brand Schultz. The antique-rose sandals feature an open toe and buckle-fastening ankle strap. The sandals are available for $90 in several colours at ShopBop and Heels.com.

Emily Andrews noted "Her heels were so high, she was wobbling slightly".
A look at Kate's very pretty clutch. A commenter notes it dates back to at least 2012.
The Telegraph notes Kate's decision to support Brazilian labels may have been a nod to the upcoming Olympics. More from their story:
'This was an Olympian effort from the Duchess in more ways than one. She has become savvy to the power of a dress to send a diplomatic message and with the Rio Olympics just weeks away now - they begin on August 5 - Kate's decision to wear Casasola is a very sophisticated acknowledgement that the eyes of the world will soon be upon Brazil, so why not nod to one of its classiest exports? This is gold medal levels of dressing prowess. '
What do you think of Kate's look tonight?

We also have several brief updates to share with you tonight concerning the Cambridges. Whispers of an autumn visit to Canada have been circulating for months. Our first concrete information on the potential tour came yesterday when Canada's Globe and Mail confirmed the invitation. More from their story Trudeau invites William and Kate for royal tour of Canada:
'The Prime Minister certainly has invited William and Kate [Middleton] and family to come to Canada whenever they are available on their schedule,” Mr. Trudeau’s director of communications Kate Purchase said in an interview, adding an official letter has been sent.
Ms. Purchase confirmed that the visit could come as early as the fall “It is a possibility, but again, we don’t have any confirmation. From the Prime Minister’s perspective, we invited them whenever their schedules permitted it,” Ms. Purchase said.
Other sources said officials are already mobilizing in anticipation of the visit, which stands to upstage any other royal visit that would occur during the actual celebrations of Canada’s sesquicentennial.'
It's important to note there is no official confirmation of the visit or any statement regarding the possibility from Kensington Palace. However, royal reporter Emily Andrews shared this tweet:
Emily Andrews Twitter Feed |
There's been much debate and speculation about one aspect in particular: will William and Kate take George and Charlotte? Again, there's no official word, however, there is a feeling among members of the press pack it's a strong likelyhood, with the children potentially making a couple of select appearances during the visit. Canada was the location of William and Kate's first joint tour and it would be very special indeed to return five years later with their two children ahead of the country's 2017 celebrations of Canada's 150th anniversary of confederation. It would also be very interesting to see the Cambridges undertake two royal tours in one year - undoubtedly a sign of their increasing royal role. We'll keep you informed as news on this progresses.

Fans of the L.K. Bennett 'Addison' dress Kate wore when the Obamas visited Kensington Palace for dinner will be pleased to hear the dress has been reissued in all sizes. It retails for £325 on the UK site and $525 on the US/Canada website.

Finally, Kensington Palace announced the Duke and Duchess will see the world's largest military air show on Friday, 8 July, when they attend the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire. Kate is Honorary Air Commandant of the Air Cadets and both she and the Duke will have the opportunity to meet some of the cadets during their visit. Proceeds from the show benefit the RAF Charitable Trust. It promises to be a very interesting day with plenty of fabulous photos.
We'll see you tomorrow when the Duchess is set to attend Wimbledon :)
We'll see you tomorrow when the Duchess is set to attend Wimbledon :)
Breathtaking! Her hair is so full and lovely! And her figure in that dress is exquisite!
ReplyDeleteI'm Speechless! Thanks Katie for Speaking for Me Too!:)
DeleteOne of her best ever! Super stylish. This is the Duchess at her best!
DeleteTrendy, pricey, and sexy in a sophisticated way - I love this look! Some sparkly jewels would have been nice, however. And I'm glad to see her taking on a bit of the York girls' way with shoes - love the ankle straps. Thanks for all the info Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteOh I think Anything in the jewelry line would have taken away from the Striking Off The Shoulder Look! Many have been waiting for her to step out a bit more...... Voila! I don't think I thought we'd ever see an off the shoulder dress & here it is!:) Magnificent!
DeleteI thought that some sparkly jewels would have been great but then I noticed they described this dress as being from a "minimalist" collection. She may have just been going minimal on the jewelry to stick with the theme. However, an awesome necklace or bracelet would have been great!
DeleteI agree Becca...minimalist all the way! :) Diana never overdid it in the jewelry department and it WORKED!
DeleteTotally agree no necklace, but earrings (probably we just can't see them) or a bracelet would work. In truth, I'd just like to see some of those jaw dropping jewels on someone young and beautiful - remembering the Diana days!
DeleteOnce again you arefirst with the post of today's event. Good job. Thank you
ReplyDeleteThat's Our Charlotte!:) Bravo!
DeleteShe looks perfect. The dress is fun and age-appropriate, her hair balances it out nicely, and her kickers are gorgeous! Love this look...
ReplyDeleteThank you for the quick post Charlotte--makes a welcome distraction from the Wales vs Portugal match :( Kate is so beautiful she could wear anything, including this white dress. I personally don't like the dress--prefer floaty, chiffon dresses. I am glad her hair is down because I don't think an updo would have looked good with this dress. And no jewelry at all? I am glad to see her but this look just doesn't impress me.
ReplyDeleteShe wore earrings
DeleteYou are right Valerie, Her Hair is Her Best Accessory Today!... Or is it Her Shoulders? Whichever it is, She Rocked This Look!:)
DeleteOkay I amend my comment slightly--when the other photos popped up and there was one of the dress swinging as she walked, it looked beautiful!
DeleteOoooh! I like Kate's look today!! A more casual fabric, longer length etc. A nice cocktail look :D And great to see her in a new designer :) This kind of "thin and accentuating" from cheast to knees and then a little mermaid-y, swoopy bottom works very well with this kind of midi length and make's it feel rather festive while still not being too formal. I'm also rather fond of off shoulder looks so I like this dress. Not the prettiest dress or outfit in the history of fashion, but I like it!
ReplyDeleteAnd great with some more interesting shoes!!
And I know this will not be to everyones taste, but I love her poofy and glamorous hair!!
I like these kind of gala occations because Kate usualy plays more with her style then :) Which makes sense, since at a movie premiere, museum award etc it's not as important for the focus to be on a charity and such. She is supposed to look glam, while at (other kind of) charity events it could look a bit insensitive. It's fashion fun with these occations to see her branch out a bit!
(Also, if my comments sound a bit gushy at times, it is because I usually write them while following the first pictures and such on twitter so I write them at first impressions and when I'm excitedly awaiting her. So they get more positive than after I sit down and start analyzing :P )
And another thing, while I kind of don't want Kate and William to go to Rio because of Zika... both the dress and shoe designers have ties to Brazil.. could she be test driving some Brazilian brands?
And... yet another PS :P I love that you did some small highlights on the Museums! This is exactly the kind of PR and exposure that an award like this and a royal patronage is trying to achive. To introduce people to it who normally might not be! (I have to say, the Bethlem Museum of the Mind sounds very interesting!!)
You certainly don't have to apologize Rebecca.
DeleteYour exuberance, etc. is always welcome. A true blessing as far as I am concerned. :)
I also thank you for including the information on the museums. Will be traveling to the UK next year, and I will put some of them on our itinerary. What great PR for Britain. Love Kate's look – so fresh, modern, subtely sexy. She can wear anything.
DeleteI wasnt excusing anon 22.15. Just explaining why my first long comments are usually a bit more positive than the rest ones (even though I very rarely go negative) :P
DeleteI'm Sure I Speak For Many Others When I Say That I Love Your Posts Rebecca!:) I Too Was Wondering if Perhaps She Was Giving a Nod To Rio? However, I Do Hope She Doesn't Attend :(
DeleteEither or, just adding some encouragement. nbd.
DeleteI am BLOWN AWAY by this dress! Just when I feared Kate had become entrenched in staid, matronly outfits lately, here comes this fresh, stylish, fashionable dress from a new designer! Kate looks every bit as good as the model in this dress. And an added bonus, she debuts a new shoe that isn't a plain pump-YESSS! love her hair today, too...
ReplyDeleteI Know! Plus Add in That Front Zipper & its Va Va Voom!:)
DeleteShe looks amazing as always. Not many women could pull off that form-fitting fabric, cut and color but she wears it beautifully. Love the hair too.
ReplyDeleteEverything about this look i love, dress, shoes & hair all look fabulous, in my opinion she has not put a foot wrong recently!
ReplyDeleteOh I loved the dress, it fits so well on Kate.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy when the Duchess mixes it up with a new designer. I really wanted to love this dress, but I can't. I love the paneling detail, the off the shoulder look, and the length, but am not a fan of the color. This could be because of the photographers' flashes or the lighting - I'm not sure. Maybe it's stunning in person.
ReplyDeleteI Actually Think The Color & The Almost Architectual Lines Give A Nod To The Museum Itself! Knowing Her Flare for Weaving So Much Into Her Sartorial Choices.... To Me It's Spot On:)
DeleteI think we can put the pregnancy rumors to rest for a while.....there is nowhere to hide a bump in that dress! An amazing all-around look tonight, perfect for this event :)
ReplyDeletecute, 21:51. And true.
DeleteHa! lol I Was Thinking The Same Thing, But Was Too Chicken To Say It! :) Thanks Anon 21:51
DeleteIn a word, YES.
DeleteShe really is improving in confidence and in speaking! Yes, she's not doing it perfect but she was way more comfortable today when the envelope didn't open. Remember her nervous giggle when she stuttered a few years back and compare it to how she handled it now! And when her hair got in the way, she did one smooth swoop of it behind the ear. No flickering, flipping or pushing! All these small things shows some great improvement and I am really proud :D
ReplyDeleteI Totally Agree Rebecca! I Always Think It's Interesting To Compare Kate to Diana just 5yrs In.... Kate's Doing Great!:)
DeleteKate IS doing great. :) Diana did great despite her circumstances...and Kate is going great because of them. Kudos to William.
DeleteJust had to mention in defense of Diana that she was a lot younger than Kate also.
DeleteOh Royalfan, what a sweet thing to say...and true. Diana lives on.
DeleteTammy, she absolutely does. :)
DeleteShe looks great! I love to see her go a little 'sexy' from time to time. She is a gorgeous woman and she can pull off a tasteful sexy look. I look back at Diana's old photos and even The Queen, who often showed shoulder and cleavage in the 1950's. The Duchess should too! And her hair! How I would die to have that mane!
ReplyDeleteThe twenty-something Kate made an appearance tonight. Good for her.William chose well.
DeleteDitto On The Hair For Sure!:)
DeleteStunning! Just stunning! I do agree a bit of jewelry would enhance, but her whole styling is fresh, fun and flattering. She looks so glam!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteWow, wow, wow! Absolutely love this dress! It is not only modern, chic and fitting for the occasion; it is somewhat (do I dare say) sexy in a very good way! Love that she is experimenting with different looks and designers. This dress is so appropriate in that it has an architectural, sculpted look while being soft and feminine at the same time. While not particularly a fan of the color of the shoe with the dress.....who cares, just love the sandal look with the dress and that she is stepping outside a comfort zone. Also it is a modern look that she is not so matchy, matchy with shoes and clutch. Her hair is beautiful and she looks lovely and quite relevant all the way around. Just shows that Kate really has all around style and can do traditional, classic all the way to modern, edgy and even sexy and remain elegant doing it!!!
ReplyDeleteBTW, the Jupiter Artland is absolutely spectacular.
I agree that the non-matching accessories feels very modern! I especially love that while they're not matching, the clutches lines reflects the lines of the dress!
DeleteHadn't noticed that, but you are right Rebecca about the lines of the clutch. Just another point on the "she got it right" side!!
DeleteI have to disagree with some of the earlier posts and say that I do not prefer this style on Kate. It isn't very flattering when she moves and seems like too much of a leap in her style choices. Her hair, however, looks great.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't disagree with you more. She is stunning and can wear almost anything and make it look great. This dress is fun and a little sexy. I bet she got some wows before leaving home tonight.
DeleteI agree 100%
DeleteIt's a nice dress for sure. Is it appropriate for the occasion? Not sure. The one thing I noticed about Kate lately is that she is rather hunched unfortunately. Particularly surprising for a swimmer. Maybe she doesn't have time to swim anymore with the two little kids. That is unfortunate. This dress (in several pictures) shows it quite a bit. Let's hope she will get more time once Charlotte grows up... Overall not a winning look for me
DeleteBeg to disagree on the hair. It appears that every taped speaking engagement showcases the Duchess fumbling with her hair. As a former media and PR advisor, please pin it back. Touching one's hair whilst speaking is a sign of nervousness or inexperience. The Duchess is an intelligent woman who simply needs her hair secured for speaking engagements, especially those involving reading from a podium and script.
DeleteI bet she did too, 23:04!
DeleteWell I dare say if you were walking in those shoes you would have a difficult time staying up straight. I wouldn't even be able to stand up let alone stand up straight.
DeleteWow! Love this look!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous dress and she looks wonderful in it. Her hair and make up look beautiful. I think this dress looks great without any jewelry, suspect she had some earrings and of course her engagement/wedding ring set which is plenty of sparkle. her hair looks glossy and the "wings" are growing out nicely. ali
ReplyDeleteYikes!! I guess I'm going to have the unpopular opinion here because I think that dress is a disaster. It does nothing for her and she's so skinny, it sags and hangs. And the colour is so blah. It's interesting to see her embracing trends like off the shoulder though.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is not my favorite dress. I do like the off the shoulder also, her hair covers it too much. For whatever reason I'm not a big fan of her hair tonight, I think a half up would of been perfect.
DeleteBut she looks great though, even though I'm not a fan of the dress or hair. Just proves to show she looks great in whatever she wears!
Her hair half up with some substantial bling earrings (big earrings) would have looked lively also.
DeleteCee, I agree with you. The dress is a disaster, and I'mno a fan of the shoes, either. They look cheap to me.
DeleteI think it looks better on Kate than the model, to be honest. The top for sure. Overall, it's perfect for her figure, IMO.
DeleteI disagree- looks better on model than Kate.
DeleteI agree. I do think it's a nod to the venue and she's probably thrilled to wear a younger look, but winter white on her is not wonderful. Love the accessories though, great choices.
DeleteI agree RoyalFan, I thought it looked better on the Kate than the model as well. I like where the horizontal band hits Kate - her waist line versus the "hip" line on the model - and the second horizontal line hits right below her bum (which IMHO is the right location). Agreed the lines are a line to the architectural venue.
DeleteI agree Cee. I'm sorry to say, but after a long string of hits I find this look a total miss. I don't like the shape, award length, fabric, or colour of the dress. I DO like that she's gone for another 'cold shoulder' look which I think is very trendy of her.
DeleteSomething is off about her hair and I really don't like those shoes, they look retro and not in a good way. Oh gosh, I'm harsh today. Not trying to be mean or anything...
I guess I'm in the minority haha. I don't like this dress. I like the top half, but the bottom half looks stiff/blocky. And to me, it almost looks like a "knit sweater material" not nice for a dress. If this was a top, and some dark jeans and boots it would be a nice casual look :) this doesnt look like a fancy dinner dress to me, maybe it's the look of the material. I also don't like midi dresses in general. Or skirts on anyone. To me it always looks awkward like the dress or skirt is too short!
ReplyDeleteThat's what great about these posts, we can all agree to disagree! The dress certainly has an edge to it that isn't to everybody's taste. While not a fan of "knit sweater material" either, this material has more structure to it to hold the shape and yet be light enough to have movement. It has an artsy style to it that makes it perfect for this occasion. The tea length works for this dress as for the occasion, not too formal, but formal enough.
DeleteP.S. ANon 22:15 - Love the look as a dress, but completely agree that if this were a top, it would look smashing with dark jeans for a more casual look!
DeleteThat would look really cute with dark Jeans and heels or boots.
DeleteOff the shoulder white top with jeans would be so smashing! (Not for this event... obviously!!)
DeleteKate looks beautiful tonight, as always, and she looks wonderful in everything she wears. But personally I do not like the dress. I'm not fond of the "cold shoulder" look, nor the dress in its entirety. But, I think it is great that she is experimenting and trying new styles. Her hair is gorgeous tonight. As someone with naturally curly hair, I like when she allows her natural waves to come through. It is not often we get to see that.
ReplyDeleteThe mom of two and wife of a future king got to have just out and out fun with fashion today. Flirty and vivacious. Good for her. After two days of solemn memorial events it is good for her to fun it up a bit. It is the perfect venue for the more artsy dress and shoes.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked even just a dainty hint of sparkle though. Just a single solitary diamond on a sheer necklace would have been perfect.
I agree. Perfect venue for a more structured gown. Hope they make it to Canada. They didn't come to my province of Nova Scotia last time, but I did see Diana and Charles in 1983. It would be great to see the next generation!
DeleteThanks yet again, Charlotte. :)
ReplyDeleteOne word - gorgeous! This is perfection in my opinion. Love the shoes..the dress..and when we get an ID on that clutch I am hoping it is in my price range because I love it. And is that a tad bit of coral lipstick I see on her lips??? Coordinates with the shoes...might be just the lighting in the pictures...but it does look like it. Nice change from here "clear gloss" approach. This is a great summer outfit...Perfect.
ReplyDeleteShe has carried that purse before. With the white Mouret, I think. She has definitely carried that before. It is one of my favorites of hers.
DeleteI also really like the clutch. I think it's still an UFO (Un-identified Fashion Object).
DeleteCorrect, 23:14! :)
Deletehttp://media2.popsugar-assets.com/files/thumbor/3K5_v6ir2-sdlzdH-jhr3QUx6ls/fit-in/1024x1024/filters:format_auto-!!-:strip_icc-!!-/2012/05/19/3/192/1922564/074999dfdf283968_kate-middleton/i/Kate-Middleton-White-Slit-Dress-Roland-Mouret.jpg
Thanks to both of you. Just went back through the archives...she did carry this purse in 2012 with the Rouland Mouret Lombard dress. Great memory..Anonymous 23:14. Which means there is no hope of mean putting my hands on one. Drat!! Thanks again!
Deletecute, Rebecca. I haven't found out who the designer is yet. I don't think they have even found out over at WKW.
DeleteKate wasn't levitating in France. She was just practicing for these heels.
ReplyDeletelol. How high are those heels? I think they are her highest ones yet.
DeleteI could not get the video to work. That white thing kept going around and around the arrow and the video wouldn't play.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else not get the video to work?
DeleteI couldn't get it to work either.
DeleteThe same thing was happening to me :/
I have loved all of Kate's updos lately and I'm not often a fan of her hair down, but today I think her hair style is gorgeous and perfect for this off-the-shoulder dress. Very few women could look good in this dress (I don't think it looked good on the models) but I think it looks beautiful on Kate. Plus I love her sandals and her clutch. Love, love, love her look.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post Charlotte. What a fun evening. I love visiting museums. All the contenders look like places I would love to visit/re-visit.
ReplyDeleteCatherine looks fab. Some have commented that they don't like the sweater or jumper like look of the fabric but I LOVE it! What an elegant and fun dress.
Cara, Australia
Love the look, but not a fan of the fabric... looks heavy! I agree with some of the comments about needing some kind of jewelry, but oh my! about the sandals. Why can't she be a good example for the younger generation and wear heels that are more comfortable (and not wobbly)? Those are too high and will do a number to her feet and back!
ReplyDeleteMy first time commenting here because I'm so incredibly blown away by this look on Kate! While its not my favorite dress in the world, I'm so glad to see her putting together something so fashion forward and sexy! She's young and has an incredible figure, glad to see her embracing it. Love the fact that she's not wearing basic pumps- hope she continues to mix it up in the future. Go Kate!
ReplyDeleteThx for joining in Anon 22:58!:) Hope you pop in more often:)
DeleteDo not know if Duchess receives any information about the colors, set up of the venue, but if you look at the table setting and the venue, she absolutely coordinates. The peonies (think they are peonies) are soft white and blush on a grey tablecloth with silverware. Her dress, soft white; her shoes, blush; a silver clutch....she looks like a hostess who planned the event and dressed for the occasion. As for jewelry, think she hit the right note with less. Can't tell her earrings (probably a simple diamond) but with her hair down the dress is the focus. Think she knows what she is doing.
ReplyDelete23:07,
DeleteCongratulations and thank you. You found the "Kate things" right away. Kate does stuff like that often. More "Kate things" to add to the list. Thanks.
Honestly, I think sometimes the "Kate things" theories are somewhat of stretches, although obviously there's no way to know. But she's wearing a completely white dress, with a pale silver clutch and almost nudes shoes. Is there any possible color combination for a venue/setting that those colors WOULDN'T coordinate with?
DeleteOr like the "french lace" for the France trip - she used lace from one of the top providers in Europe. She also wore that french lace to the BRITISH races, and other British events as well. I think sometimes perhaps things are just happy coincidences.
That's not to take credit away from Kate. Just seems like sometimes perhaps we take it too far. Especially when people also think she does not want much close analysis of her clothes and picks clothing with that in mind - if she doesn't to be known for her clothes, then why would she spend so much time finding clothes that pay tribute to the event at hand in ways that no one could possibly know without very careful analysis?
I thought of another "Kate thing" that she did before we knew she did "Kate things".
DeleteIn June of 2011, when she was walking across the tarmac to board the flight from London to Canada to start the tour, she wore a Mouret sheath dress that was navy or black, her Smythe navy blazer, carried her Mulberry navy Molly Polly Push Lock satchel purse, her navy Manolo
Blahnik Caligera heels. Many people thought she looked very much like an airline hostess in that outfit and I agree.
Even during their engagement interview with Tom Bradby, he made reference to the "doors to manual" comments referring to the fact that Kate's mother had had slurs against her because she had been an airline hostess and not of the British peerage. So if Kate hadn't been aware of the slurs before that, she was then. So, I definitely believe Kate was definitely paying homage to her sweet mom's days as an airline hostess by wearing that outfit and carrying that satchel. (Did she ever wear those Manolo Blahnik's again, btw?)
Why would she pay homage to her mother's *former* career? The folks that enjoy doing that have an agenda and Kate has blown the joy in that one out of the water! :)
DeleteI love how one of the news pieces referenced Kate's Sophisticated Ability to Tie Things into Her Sartorial Choices! It's A Kate Thing & People are Finally Catching On! Yea:)
DeleteGood Catch Anon 00:51! What a Sophisticated Nod To Her Devoted & Dignified Mother (despite what catty people had said) Kate is Showing Herself To Be An Increasing Treasure To The Firm For Sure! She will only Continue To Be as She Evolves into The Princess of Wales & Then The Wife of A King & The Mother of A King! As Our Teddy Roosevelt used to say....."Speak Softly & Carry A Big Stick". Tho I believe Kate has shown herself to have Great Grace & Not a Mean Bone in Her Body! :)
DeleteMaggie, the shoes match exactly and the dress does also. The peace signs in the green silk fabric when hosting the media at BP isn't a stretch nor was the lotus design in the burgundy
DeleteChina dress, nor the palm branches in the beige French lace (that no one has yet identified on anyone else). Kate's dressing George in William's outfits was clear as was the posing of the photos like heirloom ones. I won't discuss every instance with you as their are many instances. Even the media has commented on it more than once, particularly during her visit to Bletchley. I believe that reference was in the Express. And when the law of probability of all these "coincidences" is considered, random becomes a moot point. Of course everyone has their opinion. Mine is, that it is what it is, and obviously so. "Kate things." (No offense.)
Maggie, the dress is listed on the designer's website as cream Jersey. A headline today read,
Delete"A Dream in Cream".
I agree that Kate does the "Kate things". I believe it is her way of expressing herself and sort of being more in control of the situation. I also think she kind of likes playing with the press a little. And, people do notice every detail of Kate's outfits. In minutia. Even publications like The New York Times, etc. always include a description about what Kate wore. Kate, no doubt, is very much aware of that. Kate's early days and subsequent days illustrate her enjoyment of fashion. She was a fashion designer of Jewelry for Claudia Bradby and a buyer of fashion accessories for another company. Kate cares about fashion.
WOW! Kate looks amazing! A very modern and chic look that looks fabulous on her. Oh to have Kate's figure! I love the off the shoulder cut. It's very fresh and sexy! The picture of Kate looking back over her shoulder is beautiful. Definitely a framer for William...wink. :) Charlotte, thank you for the information on the five museums. Very interesting and informative. It looks like Kate enjoyed herself and the engagement!
ReplyDeleteKate, how ironic! I referred to her shoes as "sexy and fresh". :))
DeleteTo be honest, it reminds me of one of Diana's gowns but I am N-O-T suggesting that this is a nod!
http://www.glamour.com/images/fashion/2014/11/princess-diana-pink-dress-at-autction-w724.jpg
Royalfan, oh my goodness.... When I was typing my comment I started to say how much this dress reminded me of Diana and something she would wear. I backtracked and didn't post, but should have! GREAT minds think alike! :)
DeleteRF,
DeleteThat beautiful pink Catherine Walker dress of Diana's that you provided the link for, Diana wore to a performance at the Savoy Theatre and then again to a performance of "Le Boheme' " at the London Coliseum in 1993. Since Diana didn't wear that dress to a museum event I do not think that Kate's cream dress is a "nod" to Diana either. I think Kate definitely was giving a "nod" to the architecture of the National Art Museum venue and to the color scheme of the dinner table and artsy-ness of the event, definitely. Very thoughtful of Kate.
I LOVED Diana's pink gown. So pretty. I appreciate Kate's fashion fun and her "Kate things" that I love, but the cream dress is not even in the same league as that Iconic pink dress. (That dress was supposed to bring $60,000 to $80,000 at auction.)
Kate, I had a feeling you would appreciate that. :))
Delete21:58, I was not comparing the gowns, it was just the first thought in my head when I saw these pics of Kate. The style suited Diana, and I think Kate looked wonderful as well.
Kate continues to step it up. She looks gorgeous!! I love to see her being adventurous with this choice of a dress and shoes. It is so great to see her wearing a different kind of shoe instead of her usual high heel pointy toe. I do like the high heel pointy toe shoe, but a change is nice. Also, her clothing choice shows her increasing confidence in her role. I am so excited to her that we will get to see her again on Friday.
ReplyDeleteKate carried that beautiful purse in May, 2012,
ReplyDeleteto the Thirty Club annual dinner at the Claridge Hotel in London. She was wearing the white Mouret gown.
(One of my favorite outfits of hers.) Beautiful purse.
LOVE IT! Every bit of it! Modern, fun, and sophisticated. And the sandals are sexy and fresh. Just perfect all around.
ReplyDeleteAnd I disagree with the comments calling for jewelry. The simplicity here is key.
I agree with you on the no jewelry. All the fashion magazines this spring have said that with the off the shoulder look...the shoulders are the best accessory. Nothing more. Especially with her hair down...a necklace would have been lost and cluttered it. Could maybe have done a bracelet but with long sleeves...it would not really have been worth it. I think this is perfect as is. Would love to know what the earings are....
DeleteI have tried to figure it out, but have not been successful so far... :)

Hello everyone,
ReplyDeleteEmily Andrews reports Kate will attend Wimbledon tomorrow :)
Thank you! Looking forward to it! :)
DeleteI'm really looking forward to it! I love her sports faces.
DeleteI am extra happy that it's the ladies matches. I don't watch much sport (except for royal watching!), but it's great to see her go to a ladies game since ladies sports usually have "lower status".
I assume William will not join tomorrow then. Isn't it the Order of the Thistle cermony tomorrow?
Moxie, are you and your hard working crew over at "Watching Kate Watching Sports" all excited and ready for Wimbledon?
DeleteYea!!! Kate (& Will) Are Becoming The Gift That Keeps On Giving!:)
DeleteYes Rebecca, Her Sports Faces are The Best:)
DeleteThanks, Charlotte. yay
ReplyDeleteStunning. Perfection in all way. She have perfect figure for this cut, love fashion forward midi and the very cute shoes. Waiting for complaints by oldies they are suede LOL!
ReplyDeleteYes, in my day, you never pulled out your suede shoes/handbags until after mid Sept at the least. And yes, I'm and oldie! I was an adult already in the 60s - so tradition is hard to break.
DeleteI am not sure they are suede...but I am with you. Nothing saying you can't wear suede in summer! Those fashion rules went out the window a long time ago!
Deletethe duchess looks beautiful and lovely ahe is sexy
ReplyDeleteAs someone mentioned above, Kate's beige with blush outfit, and silver on the purse, matched the beige and blush dinner table flowers and silver and grey of the tableware. Include the architectural design of the dress with the museum venues, as someone else mentioned above, and we have additional "Kate things". (The blush of her heels matches the peonies exactly, btw.)
ReplyDeleteI Don't Think There is Any Question about The Intention of Her "Kate Things", In fact I'm sure there are many that we miss!:)
DeleteLove a lot of things about this look - it's not very typical Kate, and I like that she went a little more fashion-forward with it. I like that she branched out shoe-wise too (I almost wonder if these sandals were originally purchased as backups for the India tour). I also like the loose waves for her hair for this event, as it seems casual enough for that to be appropriate. And without any jewelry, the look would have been entirely too spartan with an updo, or even a half-up style imo.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of the fabric - it's a little too sweatery for my tastes. And this is one dress that I think really accentuates her increasingly poor posture. I would love to see one un-obstructed picture of her in this dress with both hands to the side and her standing straight up - that picture of her exiting the building after the awards I think shows just how spectacular she would look if she ever stood that way in this dress. But she's hunching over in all of the pictures, and the off the shoulder look makes it more obvious, not to mention the hunching I think makes the dress bunch up in weird ways in her chest/midriff area. I also wish the shoes were silver instead, but that's just personal preference and they look fine in the color they are too.
I notice the hunching too. If you are wearing sky high heels and find yourself hunching over all the time, it is a sign that your heels are too high.
DeleteI agree about her posture & have noticed it before. The dress would be even more smashing on her if she were to stand tall as it did bunch with the slouching. Love the length on her & I love the shoes although I agree with the comment that they could have been about an inch shorter. She maybe would have stood taller.
DeleteI actually thought her posture was pretty good in this dress. I am not sure about the relationship of heels and a hunch. Kate's posture can be an issue in any heel, plenty of photos of her in flats etc with not the best of posture. The other issue is because she holds her hands in front of her with her clutch that alone pulls her shoulders a bit more forward and rounded. Her natural shoulder shape may also be a bit forward and rounded. The fabric bunching a bit was also true on the runway model, it did not look like the designer was aiming for a skin tight dress. Thought it looked gorgeous on Kate. ali
DeleteI have really not liked the "posture discussions" as I saw them as being petty & picky. However, as time has gone on I can not deny myself feeling an "ouch" on her behalf as I too increasingly noticed the same thing.:( She is such a lovely lady both inside & out & I hate the thought of this issue appearing already at such a young age & being so noticed. I was looking back at when she first wore The Jenny P. Dress to The Ark Event in 2011, as compared to the recent event at Houghton Hall. Especially when Charlotte posted pics side by side.... So I did a little digging & I noticed how straight her posture was at her Wedding, Throughout all of The Canada & US Tour etc etc... During this time (Pre First Pregnancy) She was much more often either having her hands at her side or using them in some way, during Walk Abouts & Generally chatting while Attending Events. It seemed to me that it was some time during her pregnancy with George that she started her (now habit) of holding her clutch with both hands clasped in front of her. With that use of her hands, it appears that it can & has sort of led to almost a Sway Back Stance, jutting out her abdomen where she is holding her clutches in a double handed manner & also standing almost lock kneed? If you do this yourself you will feel how your shoulders naturally start to curve forward.... It's such a puzzle & I do hope for her sake that it's just a habit that can be corrected, not just for appearances, but that type of stance can be hard on one's back, especially in high stiletto heals. So that's my two cents....
DeleteI must be looking at different pictures that you are as I don't see the hunching that you obviously do. The first few pictures, where she is on the steps, I don't see how she could be standing any straighter. The last one as well. The one where she is turning her head is one where you could argue that she's a little hunched and in the video where she is looking down at her remarks, but I'm afraid I just don't agree with you overall. Perhaps I'm not looking for flaws.....
DeleteThe dress is great - nice length on her - the shoes are too high - her toes are pulling out of them just trying to walk and keep them on - way too high of pitch on them - she should have gone with a different shoe about 1" shorter heel -- but I like the peach shade of shoe with this dress.
ReplyDeleteThe dress would be beautiful if it had shoulders!! I love the shoes.
ReplyDeleteKathy Towers
Does anyone know, when Kate attends events like this one that feature a meal, does she actually stay for dinner or does she leave after her official duties are over?
ReplyDeletegood question, I assume people come to these dinner events to have dinner with the guest of honor and the people who present the awards. With Kate, that would seem even more important for her to have dinner with everyone there. The dinner guests probably were very excited at the prospect of having dinner with the Duchess of Cambridge.
DeleteSpectacular from head to toe. Couldn't improve on it, she looks beyond fabulous. So young, sexy and with it. Just love it.
ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of this wonderful blog and of course, of Kate. I find almost everything she selects to be near perfection. This look, however, will be a favorite for a great while. Love it from head to toe!!
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the dress... In the minority there.... BUT she does look smashing. Her hair is just glorious.
ReplyDeleteI'm not either and the shoes--granted they're not court shoes--are horrendous and do not "go" with the dress. But she's beautiful and has an amazingly thin shape. She looks gorgeous!
DeleteI cringe just seeing how high those heels are. She is doing major damage to her feet. I know someone who has had numerous foot troubles and surgeries after wearing uncomfortable heels. She said Kate is in for a lot of future foot trouble.
DeleteIs Kate going to Rio for the Olympics?
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy she wore this dress and this shoes. I actually have two bags from Shultz and I just think this is so cool. I'm so buying those shoes tomorrow! Yay! *-* Charlotte, great job as usual! I love this blog so much <3 Thank you! This look is stunning and I hope the Canada tour is true.
ReplyDeleteAnother great look for Kate and for the event. She really knocked it out of the park. I love when she surprises and shocks us with her choices. Tonight's dress was great and very few women in the world have been blessed with such a great figure to pull this dress off with such stunning results.
ReplyDeleteWe even got new shoes tonight as an added bonus. I hope the earrings are identified and we can see the look in its entirety. The museums sound so interesting and I would like to visit all of them including the Natural History Museum.
The engagement at the air show makes more sense now wiht the context of the cadets. I love a good air show but it seemed a bit odd compared to what she has done in the past. I am happy that she is continuing to be visible like this after the tour before the summer break. It's a really nice change from her usual pattern.
Looking forward to the next couple of days. Thanks Charolotte for your wonderful work and effort keeping the blog community up to date.
I am a little bit obsessed with this dress! So interesting. Midi and also shoulder, and those cuts! So cool. The shoes are ridiculous in a good way.
ReplyDeleteI'm very excited to leave a comment on this post, because for once I can say that I'm absolutely, spectacularly blown away by what a superb sartorial choice she has made. She.Looks.Stunning. It is perfect, simply perfect, with the perfect choice of shoe also. I'm often disappointed in her choices because I believe she dresses too conservatively, too "mature" for her actual age. I understand that she has protocol to follow, and must stay within certain boundaries when it comes to her clothes. But this time, she knocked this one out of the ballpark. I hope she continues to take risks and dress more youthful, as she is very young. This look is fantastic on her, it's just a WOW WOW WOW!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what new risks she takes in terms of her sartorial choices! She does look stunning and carries off the dress style which I could not have, personally. Kate looks stunning and stylish and looks incredibly happy too :-) XOXO
DeleteStunning! Love the pink shoes!
ReplyDeleteI liked the style and of the dress except for the off shoulder bit. She didn't look comfortable, and I think the reason she wore her hair down was to conceal the shoulder thing. She was fumbling trying to bring one shoulder up further as she walked away when leaving. I felt she was subconscious about it. I think she would have had much more confidence with a regular sleeve and scoop neck with her hair in a chignon. Much more sophisticated. Especially for a speaking engagement. Just my opinion. Love the fabric and color and the shoes are wonderful. Also the midi length is great.
ReplyDeleteI think Kate looked great. I personally don't love the dress but it was outside her normal wheelhouse and I love that. Her hair looked fantastic and the shoes were fun. I think she was very comfortable at this event and so felt some freedom to have some fun with fashion.
ReplyDeletePlus, she has done many more engagements recently. If you have one or two engagements, you need to make sure you do well on fashion since you will only have a few chances to make an inpression so I feel like she goes conservative. With more engagements come more opportunities for fun. If you have 10-15 engagements in a month, you can plan to take a risk with fashion for one or two and be okay if they don't work as well in reality as on the runway.
I posted earlier and it appears to not have gone thru, so maybe a duplicate. Love this dress and Kate's total look. Thought she looked wonderful. Her hair is also looking really good with the sides a bit more grown out and bending into her longer hair. Her heels were great and did not look any higher than many of the shoes she wears. Doubt she did much wobbling or at least no more than any of us might do in skinny heels of any height. Will love to get a good view of her earrings, look like a departure look for her. Overall a great sophisticated look. ali
ReplyDeleteWell she looks stunning. And from a comment in some other blog,
ReplyDeletewe are all holding in our tummies just a bit more now.
hmm I love the dress and I love seeing her taking the limits from sexy and glamorous at the same time the duchess compliments her outfits she adopt on the event im looking forward tomorrow Wimbledon
ReplyDeleteLove this look! The hair, the edgier and more modern dress, fun new heels - it's nice to see her trying something different.
ReplyDeleteI usually always love what the Duchess wears, but while I like the dress, shoes and the bag, I don't care for them as an ensemble. I think the same shoe in a matte silver would helprobably tremendously. The shoe may be a nude color, but with the lighter cream colored dress and iridescent beaded bag the shoes come across as peach. Choose more similar colored accessories and it would look more pulled together.
ReplyDeleteThe earrings seem to be a bezeled garnet or amethyst stud earring with two smaller pearls suspended from the bezeled stud, then a large elongated pearl suspended from the two smaller pearls. Do you think this could be another pair of earrings from Kiki?
ReplyDeleteFrom the photo of the venue, the museum, I think the dress was a nod to the architecture of that presentation hall for sure. A lot of narrow rectangles interrupted by rows of smaller rectangles closer together. And the fabric could be a nod drywall or concrete. I know that sounds strange but the fabric is very unusual and that's best way I can describe it at the moment. The fabric looks industrial or something.
I think the dress was definitely a nod to the architecture of the venue.
She seemed to be having fun with fashion. Nice to be having fun after such solemn occasions in France.
Oh, splendid! I love the modern structure of this dress (as well as the modern structure of the landscaping at Jupiter Artland). I even love the sandals and bare toes, which I hate with long gowns. The heels of course should be less high if Kate is wobbly in them. Some shoe designers are apparently vying with some chefs to threaten our health and safety! The colors Kate wore are lovely. Unlike everyone else, I rather like her relaxed posture. But I do wish she would drop her hands to her sides more often, as she did now and then when walking in France. It would seem so much more natural and more dignified. Overall, this outfit was a real winner, perfect for the occasion and a lovely contrast to the elegant semi-mourning looks Kate wore over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love her hair and the bag. This wobbly same nude shoes is whatever. The dress when I first saw it I thought not good enough to wear for a dinner but it turned out it wasn't such a party so it should get a pass. Still, it will not be my fave look of the year.
ReplyDeleteAre you sure she attends today? There are only women's matches, she never attends them?!
I don't love the dress but love the off shoulder look on her. I LOVE her shoes!! so glad she got new ones they are very sexy and love the colour!
ReplyDeleteThanks Charlotte!
In reference to a few other comments, I don't think it is the height of the heel that is off, as she has worn taller shoes. If you look at the product photo, you can see that there is no real heel area, like a space for the heel of the foot to rest on; it just goes straight down.
ReplyDeleteThey are cheaper shoes, not designer, so the design is not as great and that is why they look ill fitting and uncomfortable on her.
I like the top of the dress. But I don't like the shoes...... they don't really go with the dress...... I hope she sticks to designer shoes, they are gorgeous, and complete an outfit, rather than distracting.
Plus she can rock any of them, as she is so slim and confident!!
Beautiful dress matching the peonies.
ReplyDeleteBut, can someone explain why the forks are on the right and the knives and the spoon on the left, on the table?
I' m looking forward to an explanation!
I thought that too, at first. But the close photo actually shows parts of two settings. Note in the picture of the whole hall that the napkins and menus are in the center of the settings, with the napkins interestingly draped down the sides of the tables. That clarifies where one setting ends and the next begins. They are set in the usual order, and they appear to be quite wide. Perhaps the plates were unusually large. I hope this is clear, as it is sleepy time here. :-)
Deleteit could be a reversed photograph?
DeleteThat's funny. Three people with a similar impression. :) But 4:47 is correct. The napkins and menus are in the center, between the forks on the left and knives on the right.
DeleteThiss dress reminds me very, very much of the dresses women wore I think in the 1920s - for tennis matches!!! So, for a Wimbledon gala it would have been a superb choice, elegant, yet with the "twinkle in the eyes", showing her sense of humour.
ReplyDeleteBut at an ART fund award ceremony? Sorry, no.
She´s just stunning as she is, though, no doubt about that! Plus, I love that she incorporates new designers. It´s always great fun and pleasure to discover them and their work! Thanks, Charlotte, for always providing us with so much information about them!
I don't think this is one of her best looks, but I like it and it really shows how incredibly fit she is!! Personally I don't see her rounded shoulders as a big problem, but it might be because I have the same issue with my posture. I am reasonably fit, almost as slim as she is but less tall, and I don't wear heels often because my days are too complicated for that. I have come to the conclusion that it is just how my bones are built. I would say the same for her.
ReplyDeleteCarlotta from Italy
I am in the like group. Love the structure of the dress and the edgy look. She looked timelessly elegant. Thought the sandals were great as well. From a photography point of view I think that the photograph of her almost cheekily looking back over her shoulder could well become iconic. It captures something different. If Catherine is going to be given the patronage of Wimbledon one would think she might attend on Sunday as well. Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be other Royals more frequently along with The Queen at recent engagements? Worrying?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree regarding the iconic photo! IMHO this was one of her most fashion forward looks ever - and the best part is, she appeared completely comfortable in it. Just look at the variety of facial expressions. It was either the dress, or she drank wine instead of water this time ;)
Deletehmm its another recycle again for Wimbledon hmm I love the game so far here link

I Love The Telegraph's Quote (regarding Kate & her Sartorial Choices) "She has become Savvy to The Power of a Dress to Send a Diplomatic Message"! Ahhhh..... Her efforts are being Noted & Appreciated! One of my Favorite Quotes, from our last Post Discussion, (re: the second day visit in France & Kate's Choice of Lace Overlay Dress) & it was...... "If It's Going To Be Bespoke... It Might As Well Speak!" My New Fav Phrase, which applies across the board to all her Sartorial Choices:)
ReplyDeleteThe dress is lovely ... and the shoes. Much more modern than some of the older ladies' dresses and court shoes she often wears. This style would have looked even nicer on her if she had a bit of hips, but it is very refreshing for a change!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.myfacehunter.com/2016/07/kate-middleton-barbara-casasola-off-the-shoulder-dress.html
Hope you are reading this Dear Duchess, because this was your very best yet, wow wow wow is all I can say, keep it coming Kate!!!
ReplyDeleteKOCKED IT OUTTA THE PARK!!!! The entire look: STUNNING!!
ReplyDeleteRebecca from Sweden: I LOVE her hair ;)
Interesting choice, but not my favorite style on Kate. I didn't find the off-the-shoulder look flattering on her, and the fit was off. I got the feeling that the sleeves were too long on Kate, and the dress kind of sagged around the bust area. But her hair looked amazing and I'm glad she's gaining confidence with public speaking!
ReplyDeleteStunning!! She looks fabulous! The color is such a nice contrast to her wavy chestnut hair. The shoes are great, too. I am glad she added a little bit of color with the shoes. I wouldn't have minded even more color with the shoes. Carry on Kate! Keep wowing us!!
ReplyDelete
