It was a fantastic treat to see the Prince, who celebrates his third birthday later this month, join in on the occasion. A spokesman for Kensington Palace said: "The Air Tatoo is a fantastic family-orientated event and the Duke and Duchess know that George will enjoy seeing the aircraft up close."
The royals were greeted by Air Marshall Sir Kevin Leeson, Chairman of the RAF Charitable Trust, and Air Chief Marshal Andrew Pulford, Chief of the Air Staff, RAF. They also met two members of the Red Arrows in front of a Red Arrow Hawk.
Shortly after their arrival, George was a little upset until Kate picked him up.
...And then it was time to look at the aircraft.
George was eager to step aboard.
The royals took a closer look at a Squirrel helicopter – the same aircraft the Duke trained in when based at RAF Shawbury in 2009.
"Daddy are you going to fly us?"
George was fascinated by the 'tail rotor'.

"I imagine his father has told him about helicopters, so he knew what that was called and kept saying, 'tail rotor.' It was good to see his technical knowledge! Some training going on early!" Flight Lieutenant Jim Hobkirk tells PEOPLE.
"They wanted to put him on the Duke's lap [at the controls], but he was having none of it. The Duchess suggested shutting the door to try to persuade him. But he was happy sitting with his mum." Hobkirk says of the young family, "They seemed very relaxed. The Duke said he misses flying and he wishes he could fly more and said he was envious of me."

The Cambridges have strong ties to the RAF, William having served with the search and rescue force at RAF Valley in Anglesey for over three years. In February, Prince Philip passed his patronage of the RAF Air Cadets down to Kate, who assumed the role of Honorary Air Commandant. The RIAT actually has a very strong connection to the Air Cadets. This year's event hosted official celebrations to mark the organisation's 75th anniversary.
Kate met a number of air cadets.
The Duke and Duchess chatted with television presenter Carol Voderman, who is an honorary ambassador for the cadets.
The event is staged in support of the RAF Charitable Trust, which was set up in 2005 to support the wider RAF family. As well as seeking to develop a spirit of air-mindedness in youngsters, it also aims to promote excellence with the Royal Air Force.
The Air Tattoo is the world's largest military air show, and last year featured 247 aircraft from 19 nations. The Air Tattoo's theme for 2016 is 'The Next Generation: Inspiring Innovation', offering visitors a display of cutting-edge aircraft technology both in the air and on the showground.
The thrilling event promises non-stop entertainment for all ages: "Fast jets, giant transporters, historic aircraft, and much, much more. There will be a chance to meet the crews, get close to the aircraft and enjoy a feast of first-class entertainment including the Techno Zone, an interactive showcase designed especially for youngsters, the Vintage Village, Autodrome and the Adrenalin Zone."
Showground attractions include the Autodrome with an array of automobiles. "There's more on offer than just supercars and classics though, once again the 'Get On' team will let youngsters over 12 taste the motorcycle experience with fully-trained instructors showing people the ropes in a safe and secure off-road area."
Vintage Village, allowing visitors a look back in time and a chance to revel in the fashion, jewellery and accessories of the 1940s. There's a vintage atmosphere with singing performances by award-winning artists clothed in authentic uniforms, not to mention tea and scones.

Andy Armstrong, Chief Executive of RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises, who runs the airshow, was delighted to have the royal couple there:
"I'm particularly pleased for the 1500-plus Air Cadets who'll be on site either helping us run the airshow or taking part in the 75th celebrations - and for the 2,000-plus volunteers who work so hard to make this amazing event happen. To have the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with us effectively rewards all their efforts with a Royal stamp of approval."

It was a day of repeats for Kate in the style department.
The Duchess wore her favourite Stella McCartney 'Ridley' dress, which she debuted during London 2012 and has worn several times since. Below we see Kate wearing it at the 'Aiming High' exhibition, during a tennis match at London 2012, and in Canberra during the 2014 tour.
The electric blue dress is from the Fall 2012 collection and was described: "A vibrant crepe dress. This simple shift embodies easy luxury with its minimalist silhouette and eye-catching bold hue. Concealed zip fastening at back. Round neck, short sleeves, darts at waist." It originally retailed for £515.

The blue sticker on George's T-shirt was from 2014, which celebrated the 50th Display Season of the Red Arrows.

I saw a video of their arrival. Initially Kate was not wearing the headband but she very quickly went off camera and returned wearing it. Smart!

DeleteThat is a deeply political issue too painful for both sides better left off this blog. We escape here some times from the harsh reality of the daily news. I am sorry police officers were killed too. The bad cops have given the image and trust of police in America down to horror. For all the police who get killed, we need to be reminded to have said sorry on behalf of innocent victims killed out of plain bigot power of the bad police.
When a tragic situation happens, it's hard not to feel emotions. I feel sad, for many reasons. But I am not picking a side or getting into any sort of politics. Just bc it's painful doesn't mean we should ignore it.
DeleteNo wish to jump in here either Anon 15, but it worth remembering how much attention certain incidents get from the press where others are mostly ignored - I recall reading about several instances recently of police killing unarmed white men, including one by a black officer. The situation is a complicated one, the country involved is huge, and decisions have to be made in an instant - I would never jump to conclusions of overwhelming bigotry - having been in Manhattan shortly after 9-11, I prefer to remember all those police officers who gave their lives trying to rescue people of all colours and undercover police who just a few days ago rescued some tourists in San Francisco who were facing an armed robbery in broad daylight - Mr Leo and I had walked in that pleasant neighbourhood just over a year ago - and it made me realise that could have happened to us and how lucky those girls were.

Since she had George with her and I noticed she had to keep picking him up, or bending down to speak to George, the dress kept riding up. I think that a pair of nice dress pants with a nice blouse would have looked really great. DeleteThe only time I have seen photos of Anne in trousers is with her multiple uniforms or at a private (non royal) horse event. Since she appears in these more often than some other events, it may seem she wears trousers for royal duties. I have never seen her perform royal duties in trousers, other than perhaps a sport's event, as does Kate.

DeleteI consider myself to be a pretty even mix of traditional and modern, but when I see the female cadets in uniform (wearing skirts), I think pants would have been too casual in comparison. This was not a family day at the fair; it was an official engagement.
I think it's wrong to say that pants are too casual for royal engagements per se. Princess Mary and Queen Letizia in particular have worn some fantastic and entirely appropriate dress pants and pant suits.
DeleteIt doesn't seem to be done with the British royals though and I agree with Anonymous that Princess Anne doesn't wear pants either, unless it's for sporting events or private occasions. If it's not done with them, fine (though that may change in the future, who knows) but I think for this occasion Kate should have worn a longer dress. DeleteI wear sweatpants at home at times (although right now I'm in leggings and a stretch cotton dress). Otherwise, no I don't wear pants. The last time I wore jeans must have been 8-9 years ago. I just dont think it's comfortable. Even when it's cold it works, just have double tights on and you're good to go waiting for the bus in Swedish winter. I just like it more personally.
She wore non skinney jean trousers to the Heads Together launch, which was a sporty event. The trousers she wore climbing the mountain weren't skinny jeans, I don't think.

ReplyDeleteStunning post!! Brilliant pics :-) George has stolen the show, I barely looked at wha his Mum is wearing! But I love that McCartney dress and the bluse of dress and jacket were a perfect pick for an RAF-themed event. Also I suspect the dress was easier to move around quickly in with small boy in tow, and the heels were lower for the same reason. Also handy to have a straight skirt on windy runways. Not a fan of hairbands myself, but it's just right for a day out with the family. Everyone enjoyed themselves and that's the main thing!

She had to keep pushing it to the side and tucking it behind her ear, so I think her stylist must have given it to her to wear.

What a wonderful surprise! It is great to see George there with his family. Unfortunately, the media has made a big deal about the so called "tantrum" George had upon arriving. I watched several clips of their arrival, and George did not have a tantrum. He began to cry because the noise and crowds were frightening for him. He reached for his mother and she picked him up. She calmed him down, he received ear protection, and then he was fine. There was no tantrum. This was a big day for him - going on an engagement with his parents. He was naturally overwhelmed when they arrived, but it seemed that the noise bothered him most of all. Many children would not keep ear protection on, but George did and I think that is testament to how much the noise was hurting his ears. I'm glad he was able to have the ear protection! I would have worn them too. He clearly enjoyed seeing the helicopters and airplanes, and it helps to have a father who is a pilot himself. I'm sure they had lots to talk about on the way home!

DeleteWhat a treat! They are truly a lovely family. Prince George is absolutely adorable and this was a great opportunity for Kate and William to share the day with him. Again, Kate has that effortless elegance even with an oft repeated repeat! The jacket with the dress give it the polish it needs for the occasion. The straight hair blow out look with the headband is fresh and modern. Love the pictures of them as a family together and the individual ones of William with George holding his hand and Kate holding George. Again, what a lovely family.

ReplyDeleteI am a police officers wife and live 20 miles from the shootings in Dallas...I did want to take a moment to send my prayers and condensers to all the officers who lost their lives last night, to all those injured, and to all their families. It's such a heartbreaking tragedy.
Considering she was there not only as a family, but also as an Air Commandant meeting cadets I see why she stuck to a light version of her everyday princess uniform. Yes, she could have worn pants, but I think it's just a matter of taste.

If it was simply a family day of fun, I would go along with a vote for pants. However, given that this was an official engagement and she was meeting men and women in uniform (with the women in skirts), I think this was a respectful and appropriate choice.

ReplyDeleteSlightly disappointed in Kate's choice of dress today. To be honest, if she was going to wear a cobalt blue shift, I would have preferred to see the L.K. Bennett one again - I think it has a more interesting neckline. Do we think she really has ditched the high street pieces once and for all? I do hope not in some cases - I think some of them hold their own against the designer pieces.

What a fun family day they seemed to have had. It was really nice surprise to see PG at the engagement but makes so much sense. He seemed to really be enjoying it and I loved seeing him a typical 2 yr old moment before Kate picked him up.

As far as Kate's fashion she looked great today as always in this dress/blazer combo. I was happy to see her wear a lower heel as well with all that walking and climbing about. Really lovely pictures today.

DeleteEvery photo of today is a winner. George had his hands full with so much attention and goings on and he handled it way better than most. William and Kate were definitely calm, attentive parents in a very public situation. Not always an easy combination. Kate looked totally beautiful at every turn, regardless of what she had on, although I liked her choices very much, even the headband. William even looked casually chic. Who knew William could be casually chic? Love how they effortlessly juggled work and family time.

Nice balance today between official visit and family time. As a family they look great today and agree with the casually chic effect for all! I for one like how William dresses when he dresses down. Always loved a man in a linen blazer and khaki pants. Also, kind of laughed a little, but are his loafers "suede"? Love the shoes and love them as a family!

She had to be dressed formally. There is a picture of the air cadets saluting her as their honourary air commandant. The visit was foremost because of her position.

DeleteI do like this outfit, a repeat, but not in this situation. I'm with a few others who suggested slacks or pant suit, even if not her ubiquitous jeans, would have worked better at an airshow, climbing in and out of aircraft, etc. She certainly looked lovely in her Vogue photoshoot and that featured her wearing something other than her jeans or a shift dress. I just think that practically speaking, flats and not a dress would have made more sense. But as someone else said, she managed it gracefully as she always does. Really happy to see George at an event. I remember my daughter at that age at a parade and she found the noise overwhelming. No wonder he shed a few tears. I thought he looked adorable giving a thumbs up and wave!

I loved the outfit for this event. Picking up and putting down a toddler is the fastest way to find your blouse untucked and pants askew - as much as I'd love to see her in dress pants, they might well have been a disaster today. Agree on the ponytail though!

DeleteThe best thing about today was seeing how hands on William and Kate are with George. Seeing William as a dad is inspiring. He is writing new rules in the royal dad handbook. So good to see. Hope they continue to be a happy family.

DeleteIf the Cambridges do go to Canada at some point in the future, and take George and Charlotte, I think George would handle the trip well. He is very well behaved for his age, and at the same time, William and Kate allow him to be a 3-year old (almost). It is a special treat to see them in the role of parent, and they are great with him.
ReplyDeleteWell...what an amazing day. W and K made this look so easy and let me tell you ...it is not. When my son was younger I would get invited to a lot of "family" client events. And let me tell you...mixing work with business is NOT easy. Children are highly unpredictable and I found trying to be in "Mom" mode but at the same time visit with clients and "network" ...a difficult act to manage. Will and Kate did amazing well today. It was so lovely to see both of them attentive to George...especially Will. He is setting a wonderful example of what it means to be a father in today's modern world.

I liked everything about Kate's outfit today. I have that Smythe jacket in 3 colors - black, white and navy as it is so very versatile and looks great with everything. I liked the headband...thought it looked youthful and fresh. Would pants and a ponytail been more functional...yes and lord knows I am dying to see her in a pantsuit...but Kate...as always made this work. She was calm, graceful and gracious.

DeleteKate carried George facing outwards because George wouldn't have it any other way. lol He always wiggled and strongly turned himself facing forward. He was the most observant child I had ever seen at that time. There were times he literally did some 360 rotations almost so he could see everything that was going on around him. I was surprised Kate could disembark from the Jets with George turning like that. I commented on that at the time because I was astonished at how almost aggressively alert he was. He seems to be a precocious child. One who is being taught how to behave properly even with the precociousness.
I don't think his parents had much say in it-:-) baby George managed to squirm and wiggle his way around until he could see what was going on. He had this little trick of pushing his hand against Kate's chest for momentum.

Laura, I agree with everything you said. Mixing "mom" duty in business situations can seem surreal. Kate and William made it look effortless.

Great to see little George out with his parents! Have to say all the papers saying he had a tantrum are wrong you only have to watch the videos to see he was probably a bit scared by the noise hence prancing a bit on his feet and wanting to be picked up. Poor little chap! I see Kate has a fine gold necklace on but has the pendant part tucked into her dress as you can see the pendant making a slight bump. A good day out!

Also the deep look of George's eyes for The Recent Queen's Portrait does (to me) remind me of those childhood pics they show of Diana & her brother as kids & they often had their heads tilted down with their big eyes looking up... I'd never have thought of that if you hadn't mentioned it!:) However..... I think it's a Mini Michael Middleton with A bit of William thrown in for good measure:)

She could have worn belted trousers with a fitted top and matching blazer, a suit - or even that same blazer buttoned - and looked great and appropriate. Heels and a sheath dress for climbing ladders and in and out of aircraft is a tad bizarre frankly.
But I love that they brought George out and it's charming to see William with him. When I see these pics it's hard not to pause and think of how quickly 30+ years have passed, when we pored over pics of young William with his parents. Funny how some of us have been watching him since before he was even born! If memory serves (and my fellow friends help me out!) we first knew about William when Diana briefly nodded off at an evening engagement and everyone ran with that picture... BP had to announce she wasn't bored, she was actually pregnant, and a little tired :)
In all the years following Kate, even before her marriage, she has not worn dress pants. It's probably a personal preference of hers. She could not have gone less formal in this instance as she was there is her capacity as honorary air commandant of the air cadets

Comfortable dress ( air line hostesses go up and down air planes in dresses/though not air crafts/has its own kind of appeal looking different from the all uniformed environment). Her stocking looks perfectly blended while they cover decently. She looked natural and spontaneous at the same time. Her hair band was so practical. PW and her on parental duty on engagement with George; it was all refreshing with a treat of the air show. PG giving a thumbs up must have delighted everyone including his parents. What a different day in action. It brings them closer to people as they are animated as a family, and their personality emerges in action with a child.

Why not show them off a bit while she can? There will be plenty of years ahead for covering up. This was an engagement that was both formal and informal and she dressed perfectly for it in my opinion. The fact that she could dress like this while tending to a 3 year old is quite remarkable. It was windy, no malfunctions - her hair was somewhat controlled while still allowing her to smooth it by readjusting the headband when needed. Had she worn a ponytail, I agree that bits and pieces would have been pulled apart all day long with no way to really fix it without fining a ladies' room. I really don't know what's not to like for this engagement.

Many kids his age and even older could not have handled that situation with his ease. And I agree that his face looks quite like his grandpa Middleton, the shape of it, and his eyes and nose. Today was a complete win for me. George is adorable! Temper tantrum? No way. He did the same sort of thing when he arrived at the hospital to meet Charlotte. He got out walked a few steps, got overwhelmed and wanted to be picked up by William. The more he is around the crowds, the better he will do.

I know lots of people would have liked a ponytail, but I know for me, when it as windy as it appeared to be, my hair would have little whispy strands flying all over the place. I think the headband was a good option. She can readjust and tuck back some strands without redoing all of her hair.
Katie, I agree about those wispy bits. I think the headband addressed that perfectly. I like headbands alot anyway, when they are done right. There was a twenty-something woman in our neighborhood the other day and she had a simple but cute outfit on and the perfect accessory of a silver glitter headband. Sounds tacky maybe but she did it right and looked tres chic. I almost did a little cheer. lol

Love to see George looking so much older. I think the Duchess was perfectly dressed as she is the commander of the Air Cadets. I think for an official occasion, she needed to be in a dress, although for convenience sake I'm sure slacks would have been her personal preference. HRH in New York........the Palace needs to revisit protocols in order for this generation of stylish young royals to carry out their duties without the constraints of outdated dress codes. DeleteKate is quite long-waisted - I suspect she likes the way she looks in skirts and heels which make her legs appear longer and it is more a question of personal taste than protocol.
DeleteWhile Kate has certainly worn jeans (sometimes more often than to my personal liking) she has never worn trousers as frequently. Even before her marriage, she often wore dresses to polo and when she was shopping. I don't see a problem with skirts unless the wind takes charge - in this case she handled it very well and in an informal situation like this, a bit of leg does no harm.
I personally like Kate in a dress. It is a big part of who she is.

It's Not William, It's Kate!:) Knowing The Relationship as Fellow Pilots that Prince Phillip had with Her Grandfather, It's So Touching & I Feel An Honor To Her Grandfather That PP Passed It On To Kate!:)
Then Their Kate Was, In All Her Naturally Grown Confidence Professionally & As A Mum, Carrying Out "Her" Appearance, with William & George Coming Along To Enjoy The Family Aspect, but It Was Clearly Her Event:) She Has Come Into Her Own & Will Be An Excellant Princess of Wales & an Amazing Queen!:) They Look & Feel (to watch) like The Royal Family They Are!:)

I thoroughly love this engagement! What a treat. The eyes gravitate towards gorgeous little George that I didn't even notice what Kate wore until much later. My favorite part was seeing William and Kate as doting parents! They are so good, calm, hands-on and loving. I've seen half a dozen videos and love how George runs and reaches out to them for comfort. He truly is an inquisitive child and did so well for someone who is not even 3 years old. I think we should give two thumbs up back to this family for this event!

They are equipping him well for his future, and he doesn't even know it yet! He certainly has grown, and agree with others that he will be tall (as both of his parents are).

ReplyDeleteDoes the "average" person in England know the heirarchy of the aristocracy? Do they easily recognize that a Marquess "outranks" an Earl, or that a Duke "outranks" a Marquess and so on. (I am not sure that "outranks" is the proper word.) I would think that the aristocracy, being the aristocracy knows all of that, of course, but does the "average" citizen in England, Scotland and Ireland know those things?

ReplyDeleteI too am always impressed with how well George handles public situations for his age (am also referring to past instances even back to before he was a year old). I am glad he is not totally perfect but not too far off. Very well behaved and seems to be so interested in everything. He seems very smart and looks older than he is. His parents seem to be doing an outstanding job along with their family and nanny support sytem. This was so delightful to see them as a family with a little one still wanting to be held alot. Very impressive.

He's not generous with his smiles as yet - he clearly found it all a bit noisy and overwhelming but when he does smile, it lights up his face - he looks to be very handsome when he's older. He was so good too; not at all a cheeky, naughty little one like cousin Mia or like Harry used to be. From his father's reports, I suspect it is different at home, though.
ReplyDeleteI thought Kate looked just right on what was a semi-official engagement - just so relieved not to see that dreaded jeans uniform or wedges. Nice trousers would have been fine but that isn't really her style and she wasn't overdressed for her position. The dress is one she is clearly comfortable in, looking at the prior times she's chosen it and it becomes her. The head band contained her hair nicely in the wind and I like her hair when it looks more natural like this - not so elaborately curled.
A lovely day for all - Mr Leo will be so jealous he couldn't go - he has a passion for airshows I admit I don't share, but it's lovely for little ones like George.
Charlotte, I don't know if it's just me? (Tho I've tried on several of my devices) but I can't see any new comments past a certain time yesterday (including my own from yesterday) & there are large blank gaps where partial or no comments are?

It looks like she also wore a necklace but it stayed underneath the collar of her dress. Now I'm curious. LOL

DeleteWhat an adorable little prince! I find it amusing that when he was (more) little, he seemed to constantly be wiggling around in his parents' arms and wanting to be put down, whereas now he is often asking to be carried in the solace of his mother or father's arms :) Always fun to see how children's personalities evolve as they grow. Although we almost never see him being carried in off duty pictures, so maybe it's less a personality thing and more just being older making him increasingly aware of loud crowds, attention, etc. Perhaps an argument for the Cambridges bringing him to more public appearances so he finds it all less shocking - not that there is anything wrong or unusual about a toddler being scared of large crowds! And perhaps that is exactly what they are doing now :)
ReplyDeleteI do find Kate's styling choices baffling here. She knew she would be climbing in and out of tall things and would be bending down a lot to interact with George - many pictures show quite a bit of leg and some come close to flashing parts of her body she probably doesn't want photographed. She obviously managed to avoid it, but why risk it? For those saying she needed to dress up because of her official role as patron - since when are pants mutually exclusive with looking nice/formal?! Yeah she can't wear her tight jeggings but contrary to what Kate's current pant wardrobe seems to indicate, those are not the only types of pants :) I also don't see why she wouldn't tie her hair up for such a windy occasion in which her hands would be busy with her son. None of this ended up being an issue, but again, why risk it when by now she must be well aware of the huge attention that certain pictures of her command. Part of being a good patron is, yes, looking nice, and another is dressing appropriately in a way that doesn't take attention away from the cause at hand, which just one leg separation too wide would have caused.
But really lovely engagement!
Also is it just me or have the Cambridges not just stepped up the number of engagements, but also changed the type? I feel like we used to see Kate more during the day, visiting children at hospices or mental health centers, etc, for quiet hour-long visits, playing with the kids. Now it seems like the engagements are more of the nature that commands attention - they seem to require more dressing up (and Kate in a gown is a good front page seller), or they are bringing out the kids, etc. This is NOT a complaint in any way - just an observation that I'm curious if others agree with. I suppose William is doing the regular visits still, but Kate seems to be doing more of the "flashy" and/or attention-grabbing-type events. Also interesting because these events tend to have less reporters and photographs, which does let KP control the narrative more, which they have been accused of doing.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see what happens with Heads Together - tbh I'm still slightly confused about what the point/goal of it is, as opposed to the KP trio already pushing mental health stuff separately. I understand coordination is good, but does anyone know any details about what kind of coordination is/will be happening, and what the goals are? Again, not criticism! I'm honestly curious.
One of my favorite pictures from their visit yesterday was of George in William's arms, and he had is little left hand resting on the back of his father's neck. It was so sweet and touching. I can remember seeing pictures of William and Harry doing the same gesture when being held by Diana. I think it is easy to forget how young George is, especially since he is a big brother. He still needs and seeks the comfort of being held by mom and dad, and that is so normal and loving to see.

ReplyDeleteJust a little language comment because I despair of the misuse of words and how we are losing language so rapidly. The Oxford dictionary defines tantrum as an uncontrolled outburst of anger and frustration, typically in a child. Not really what the pictures of Prince George show. He looked overwhelmed and a little bit upset and a testament to his mothering thst he was quickly and easily reassured.
Of all the pictures what was impressive was Prince George shaking hands with the pilot. No hiding behind his mother, an achievement for a nearly three year old.
I have always thought Prince George had a bit of the look of Diana's father as well as a bit of Michael Middleton.
Personally I liked what Catherine wore, thought it was a good choice for both an official and family event. She looked lovely and controlled the elements well. Pony tail might not have looked alright for the event.
In the previos post someone asked about the place setting with the knives on the right. It was how the photograph was taken to give prominence to the menu so the pictures was shot across two place settings.
