Kate's Nautical Chic For The King's Cup Regatta Launch & "Excited" To Meet Baby Sussex

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Cutty Sark this afternoon for the launch of The King's Cup, an inaugural regatta that will take place on 9 August. The annual sailing event will see William and Kate go head to head as skippers in support of eight of their patronages.

There's been several articles suggesting William and Harry will begin to reduce their polo commitments this summer. In addition to being favourite days out for royal watchers, the polo games have raised significant sums over the years. I imagine the creation of The King's Cup will serve similarly as an important fundraising tool. William's chosen charities which will benefit are Child Bereavement UK, Centrepoint, the London Air Ambulance Charity 30th Anniversary Campaign, and Tusk. Kate will support Action on Addiction, Place2Be, the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, and The Royal Foundation in connection with her work on Early Years.

Kensington Palace said: "The Duke and Duchess are strong advocates for sport, and have undertaken work both in the UK and overseas to highlight the positive impact that sport can have on the individual and within local communities. The Duchess in particular champions how the benefits of sport, nature and the outdoors can impact childhood development, and lead to improved physical and mental wellbeing for all. Their Royal Highnesses hope that The King’s Cup will become an annual event, bringing greater awareness to the wider benefits of sport, whist also raising support and funds for the causes that the Duke and Duchess support."

The winning team will be awarded The King’s Cup, first presented by King George V at Cowes’ Royal Yacht Squadron in 1920.

Kate was given a beautiful bunch of flowers.

Following William and Kate's arrival, talk very quickly turned to the arrival of Baby Sussex. William said: "Obviously thrilled, absolutely thrilled, and looking forward to seeing them in the next few days when things have quietened down. I'm very pleased and glad to welcome my own brother into the sleep deprivation society that is parenting." There's a very sweet moment when Kate turns to William and says "I'm not an uncle".

Kate added: "It's such a special time, obviously with Louis and Charlotte just having their birthdays, it's such a great time of year to have a baby. Spring is in the air. As William said, we look forward to meeting him and finding out what his name is going to be. It's really exciting for both of them and wishing them all the best. This next few weeks is always a bit daunting, the first time round, so we wish them all the best"

To launch the regatta, the couple joined children from their chosen charities as they participated in a simulated sailing race.

An overview.

They were joined by Sam and Ethan from Kate's patronage Place2Be.

There's terrific footage from the simulation in the video below.

William and Kate were shown the cup the winning team will receive in August.

The Palace continued: "The King’s Cup, which is being sponsored by Land Rover, will take place ahead of Lendy Cowes Week. Members of the public can watch the race from the SailGP Race Village along Cowes foreshore, which is free to access and will include an 800-seater grandstand. Footage from the race will play on screens across the town and there will be a number of family-friendly activities and exhibits to promote sailing around the event, including initiatives and programmes for children and young people."

Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship which was built on the River Clyde in 1869. It was considered a leading example of maritime technology. It was named after Cutty-sark, the nickname of the witch Nannie Dee in Robert Burns's 1791 poem Tam o' Shanter. The historic ship is the world's last surviving tea clipper (a 19th century merchant vessel known for its speed).

'Cutty Sark’s first voyage began on 16 February 1870. The ship was bound for Shanghai, with 1,305,812 lbs of tea on board. That’s the equivalent of about 47 double decker buses! After successfully making it to China, the ship’s first voyage ended with a return to London on 13 October 1870. Cutty Sark completed eight trips to China for tea, but never got to be the fastest ship on the tea trade.
With the arrival of steam ships and the opening of the Suez Canal, Cutty Sark had to find other goods to transport. Cutty Sark collected her last Chinese tea cargo in 1877. From this point on, Cutty Sark crew was thrown into turmoil.
A new captain, James Wallace, took over command of the ship. His first mate Sidney Smith was a bully which led to unhappiness amongst the crew. The ship took different cargoes around the world, from coal to Australian mail. Sidney Smith killed seaman John Francis and was confined but the captain helped him escape. The crew went on strike in anger, and a lack of winds found the crew becalmed in the Java Sea for three days.
Before long, Captain Wallace realised his career was finished. He jumped overboard, and his body was lost. Despite this period of turmoil, it resulted in a new captain and first mate, who would bring the ship into its most successful period of working life.'

Cutty Sark was preserved as a museum ship, and has since become a popular tourist attraction, and part of the National Historic Fleet. CNN reports: "The Cutty Sark was devastated by fire in May 2007 but a £50 million ($81 million) restoration project has seen the historic vessel returned to its previous majestic glory. The 143-year-old vessel is the world's last surviving tea clipper - a type of nineteenth century merchant sailing ship renowned for its speed - and was once considered the epitome of commercial maritime technology." The Queen and Prince Philip attended the reopening in 2012.

Before departing, the Duke and Duchess greeted well-wishers outside.

Kate perfected nautical chic today. The ensemble was incredibly appropriate for the event and effortlessly stylish. It's fun to see Kate incorporating trousers into her wardrobe for official events. Today's look hit all the right notes.

It is thought Kate's fitted breton top may be by Swedish brand Arket.

Laura swiftly identified Kate's navy trousers as the £150 LK Bennett Parker style. Described as: "Inspired by vintage design, the Parker high-waisted trousers are a modern take on 70s tailoring. Detailed with four buttons across the high waist". They are available in very limited sizing at John Lewis and Next.

The Duchess injected a pop of colour with her red Emmy London clutch.

Middleton Maven suggests Kate wore the Emmy London Josie Block Heel Pointed Shoe in custom navy.

They feature padded insoles and a 7.5 cm block heel.

And accessorised with Diana's sapphire and diamond earrings.

We'll see the Duke and Duchess for engagements in Anglesey tomorrow!

How exciting to see Kate and William again! I was just at Cutty Sark last year, when I visited London. It is a great spot and lots to see onboard this famous ship!

  5. LOVE it! Kate looks smashing and looks as if she could be the model for the outfit!! Great change up for her, dressy yet casual and always classy. Love her shoes, as they might be the Todd's in navy, IDK? Always enjoy engagements with Kate and William together. cc

  6. The Cambridges are such a warm, genuine, and refined couple; their charm and kindness just gushes when they speak. It is so wonderful that they are our next Prince & Princes if Wales, and that one day they will sit on the throne!

  7. Absolutely fantastic outfit! The whole thing just works -- wonderful striped top, and just love the wide leg nautical pants. Shoes with chunky heels! And red purse! Wow! Just perfect. Loved her and William together joking about Harry's introduction to fatherhood!! This couple is so poised and have really grown in their roles and responsibilities. They are great parents and have beautiful, well-behaved children. They are going to make great monarchs. Great for Britain.

    1. Just the kind of amazing and refined casual I love, love, love. On her, for myself, for anyone. I saw a super smart, white-haired couple in a hardware store (of all places), both in black white and gold and rockin' a similar vibe. Such a delight to enjoy.

    2. I agree Philly. The art of "refined casual dressing" is being lost. There was an older man in my building who was always well groomed, elegantly dressed, not suit and tie, but trousers, polished shoes and shirt, all to match. On cold days he wore suede jackets and caps. His manner of dressing stood not so much because of what he wore, but how he wore it in a quiet, respectful manner...all the ladies loved the way he dressed and acted, a true gentleman. To me, Kate and William have that same presence IMO. cc

    3. A lovely word picture, CeCe. William and Catherine do have a quiet, respectful charm; yet, there are also the outdoor rough and tumble moments with George and Charlotte. Which reminds me, the outdoor part- when is the garden show where we will see Kate's rustic play area?

    4. I am glad you could understand what I was trying to convey 2050! And you are right, William and Kate are as equally comfortable in their sporty, outdoor world....it seems they just do it all so naturally and with ease! The Chelsea Flower Show is coming up on May 21 through May 25. If you click on the link below you will see all the gardens in the show. Kate's is titled "RHS Back to Naure Garden" and if you click on it there is an explanation of the design and description. The whole show just looks absolutely amazing. With Kate being one of the designers, I would hope that we might expect to see her more than just one time that week. Something more to look forward to from Kate and something that is her personal mark. cc

PS. If my memory serves me, I think Mel in SoCal is going to the show, so she will have the opportunity to see the garden firsthand, and maybe even Kate! Pea green with envy! :)

In the video, you can see Kate's personal assistant watching Kate speak. She smiled in the way back as Kate spoke. It was very cute and it seems that she truly likes who she works for, which I think says a lot about an employer. Pretty cute.

I'm very interested in how this thing will evolve! They are at their best when in some friendly competition so I think this has the possibility of being a success, especially with sailing being a sport that speaks to many with thicker wallets and may therefore (like polo) be a great way to fundraise. I can imagine this being a good staple in the Cambridges calendar in the future, and how nice to have something in the usually slow August!

I agree Marcia USA. The earrings lend just the right amount of sophistication. She is a vision!

It did make me wonder if the reason behind fewer polo matches was so that both families could spend more quality time with their young families over the summer?

    2. I'm interested in why a decline of interest in polo?

    3. Not saying they are getting old, but maybe waking up with a sore body on a Sunday morning isn’t so much fun anymore. ;-)
Both Harry & William likes to be active but I have always wondered how much time the actually spend practicing polo. Polo is one of those sports you can play well into your fourties, but if you are out of practice, I am sure it hurts quite a bit.

  17. What a great new event for both Catherine and William with the Kings Cup, although I must confess that the first thing I thought of when I heard the words "Cutty Sark" was whisky …

One of the things that I love about your blog, Charlotte, is the bits of history and background with photographs and links to the places and events that Catherine attends or participates in. There are many times that I will read an article and think to myself, I remember that from the Duchess Kate blog!

      Delete
    2. Becca, I don't think William necessarily wanted to get away from the conversation so much as they always have a time restraint at all functions. Those in charge of the events keep to a strict schedule. There were other people to see and places to be. Had they lingered it would have turned into a full interview.

    2. Oh dear, I hope not, Catherine needs to fully recuperate which according to my biology professors takes a minimum of three years she's already over 35! Besides there is the impression that large families present of not caring about the environment and future shortages of resources as the climate continues to change. But then, I'm from a ZPG community and am an only child and chose to not burden the world with more and don't have children myself so I don't understand the desire to have kids anyway.

      Delete
    3. I can so well understand wishing to have (more) children! I feel until one is a mother/father one doesn't experience what boundless and unselfish love is. As for being a burden to the world, I suppose we all are, and the selfish way of life adults cannot give up is the real danger to our planet, not tiny babies. And I love how babies bring a smile on every face!

    4. Great comment, Natacha! We can start by adjusting the thermostat and refusing single-use plastic. Simple measures that can have significant impact if enough of us do it. Just decline single use straws with your takeaway meals when you order. There are hard plastic washable reusable straws available.

I will quibble a bit with the parenting remark. There are certainly parents unable to express unselfish love and non-parents who do. Most obviously, Mother Teresa..

  22. Love the outfit but for the pants. In my opinion wide legged pants don’t suit Kate and the length didn’t either. Black/blue jeans or tighter pants would have flattered her more. With the striped top and all the accessories the nautical themed pants are a tad too much. I want to scream: we get it- it’s about boats! Apart from that she looked gorgeous. I think it’s nice that Harry and Meghan having a bit of time just for themselves before the rest of the family shows up. You can manage a lot on the high after birth but most people I know regret doing and socialising too much when they could have just stayed at home and cuddled the new baby. The visitors will come soon enough.

    1. I suppose that's why she wears tight black or blue pants so often, it is what is flattering on her. As for the nautical theme, I didn't think it was too much, perhaps because I don't feel the pants are nautical except perhaps the colour.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous 21:20, the buttons on the pants, plus their wider width are as nautical as it gets. Google "sailor pants" or "nautical pants" and you will see.

I do love this outfit and the accessories are just enough. I think it is so special they invited children from their charities - it’s a great way of giving “faces” to these organizations. I always find it challenging when there is only one person representing an organization - it’s a lot to put on one person. One misstep and it can ruin the whole thing. The way they always highlight different individuals says a lot about their commitment to bring awareness and showing that anyone at anytime can be a part of something.

C, your're right; it is about boats! That was funny. However, I do like the pants a lot. And I like the short -- like other ones she has worn but it looks like the stripes are broader. I really like that Kate is getting back to her love of sports. I don't love sports but it would be good if everyone did, so that is a very good thing to promote.

Tomorrow will be a really busy day with K&W's full day event and the baby Sussex event. Quite a double treat.

And thank you, K&W, for letting us hear how you feel about M&H -- people need to be told repeatedly, I think, to keep those false rumors at bay. (A nautical pun)

  37. Kate looks great ... but what I'm most happy to see is how genuine her smile was when she was asked about Baby Sussex. Kate doesn't have a great poker face. Sometimes I see when she's phoning it in. But the way she lit up when asked about Baby Sussex ... if the tabloids are right and she hates Meghan and blah blah blah ... then she's a great actress because it's hard to fake that amount of enthusiasm about someone you supposedly hate.

As for William his body language was also more relaxed and I really hope (and believe) that whatever tension existed between the brothers (and I did see some of it in their outings together -- body language was just off) sorted itself out in the excitement of a new family member. Because now with four children involved who are cousins it's really not about them anymore.

ETA: this point hits home with me because I have cousins who I am still very distant with because unfortunately our parents feuded and made it about them and their feelings so I was never allowed to socialize with my cousins growing up and vice versa. To this day it makes me sad that we send each other a Christmas card maybe but no more.

  38. I’m excited about this event. I love their competitiveness, and it will raise money and awareness for all right charities. I laughed when William says they are uncles for the second time. Kate was like I am not an uncle.

I think Kate looks fantastic. She kept true to her love for striped sweaters, but mixed it up a little with her trousers. The shoes with the chunky heel blend better with the wider legged pants. And seem like they would be more comfy. Her red clutch is a nice contrast to all the blue.

He might forgo hair enhancement much as some of the older female royal's have avoided face lifts and rely on photo enhancement to smooth wrinkles: the resulting public outcry might not be worth the effort.
Besides, it is a family trait. Prince Phillip, the Duke of Kent, for example also wear their bald pates proudly.
