A Fashion Feast for St Paul's Service of Thanksgiving

In today's earlier post we covered the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's appearance at the Service of Thanksgiving this morning with an appropriate focus on Her Majesty's links and previous Jubilee celebrations at the cathedral (catch up on the post by clicking here). On a sartorial note, the ladies in the Royal family simply outdid themselves with an array of flawless looks. I thought it a good idea to do a separate post on what was a fashion feast and a gathering on a scale we may not see again for a while. We'll begin with a quick recap on Kate's look -- a bespoke Emilia Wickstead summery lemon dress with knotted waist detailing. I'm not normally a huge fan of Wickstead's designs (they can photograph as quite stiff), however I loved this. The elegant simplicity of the dress, coupled with that fabulous Philip Treacy hat, the Queen's Bahrain pearls and Gianvito Rossi pumps, was a sublime choice for the occasion.

The Duchess of Cornwall was regal in an ivory and gold embroidered coat dress by one of her go-to designers, Fiona Clare. The hat is a Philip Treacy repeat. Camilla was in familiar gold and diamond jewellery. I believe her necklace is a Kiki McDonough piece she has worn on a number of occasions.

The Duchess of Sussex was elegant in a 'greige' Dior ensemble from Spring/Summer 2022, composed of a long trench coat and skirt in wool and silk with an organza shirt. Meghan completed the look with Dior pumps, gloves and a matching hat by her favoured milliner, Stephen Jones for Dior.

The Princess Royal enjoyed the service before being whisked away to Scotland for engagements. Anne wore a sharp coat dress and coat by Gloucestershire-based brand Shibumi. I believe her hat is also a repeat. She completed the look with gold and pearl jewellery.

It was a mother-daughter pretty in pink moment for the Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise. Sophie wore the sparkly Suzannah Alessia dress with her Jane Taylor Vitula hat and L.K. Bennett Harley pumps. Louise looked simply lovely in the satin Ghost Delphine dress and pink Jane Taylor headband.

Princess Beatrice's husband Edo Mapelli Mozzi took to Instagram to praise his wife and sister-in-law's "stunning" looks. The York sisters chose smashing outfits for the day. Beatrice in a lovely blue Beulah London Ahana dress and a Juliette Botterill hat with Ralph & Russo pumps.

Beatrice's Sophia Webster clutch? 'Wifey for Lifey'.

Then to striking pops of colour, beginning with Princess Eugenie in Emilia Wickstead's Amila dress and the Emily London 'Ophelia' hat. Indeed, Mike Tindall was so struck by Eugenie's and Zara's (wearing a fuchsia pink Laura Green coat and purple Juliette Botterill Hydrangea Bow Percher) vibrant looks, he decided to do a bit of fashion analysis from the Guildhall reception afterwards, comparing the ladies' choices of shades to...starburst sweets :)

Indeed, Mike decided to try the Juliette Botterill creation himself...

I thought Lady Frederick Windsor, Sophie Winkleman, and her sister-in-law Lady Gabriella Kingston looked sensational. Sophie's husband Freddie and Gabriella are the children of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and in 2019 she married Pippa Matthews' former flame, Thomas Kingston. Sophie wore the same Beulah London dress as Beatrice in a warm pink whilst Gabriella chose a peach dress with bow detail.

After Sophie and Louise, another pretty in pink duo.

Princess Margaret's daughter Lady Sarah Chatto always chooses understated looks. She's a very elegant lady.

Another timeless look -- the Duchess of Gloucester.

With many thanks to Polka Popp, UFO No More and Remoulade Sauce via Twitter for their words on this.

A reminder -- we'll see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Cardiff tomorrow before the exciting Platinum Party at the Palace in the evening.

  1. And doesn't Mike Tindall look simply smashing in that violet hat, which harmonizes so nicely with his tie and the floral setting? Worthy of a portrait by John Singer Sargent, I must say. Perhaps he'll start a trend. I eagerly await Philip Treacy's new men's line.

I've always loved Lady Sarah Chatto's 1950s' chic. It's a uniform she's developed for herself but an interesting one. Another particularly chic member of the extended royal family is Lady Gabriella Windsor Kingston, whose style I've enjoyed for years.

  4. Thought everyone looked amazing. Especially loved the colours Zara, Eugenie and Kate wore. Such a shame the Queen could not have been there.

Absolutely love the coverage you provide. I have watched for years but have not commented for a while myself. Thank you for keeping us such up-to-date with all that is happening. You have mentioned that that Frederick and Gabriella were the children Duke of Kent. However, I think they are the children of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, the youger brother to the Duke of Kent. They looked smashing anyway.

    1. The children of the Duke of Kent (elder son of a younger brother of the Queen's father, King George VI) are the Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Windsor Taylor, and Lord Nicholas Windsor. They all have children of their own.

The Duke's younger siblings are Princess Alexandra of Kent and Prince Michael of Kent. They also have children and grandchildren, including, as the post indicates, Lord Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Windsor Kingston, who are the children of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent

  6. Love this post! Thank you! Everyone seemed to dress for fun, not for duty. Louise looked just wonderful! I've never seen her so pretty, and her mom looked very elegant. The appreciative husbands made it even nicer -- wonder if Harry had seen Mike when the hat when he sent the big "wow" gesture toward Zara and Mike?

  7. Mike should definitely win best dressed. His hat choice today was stunning. 👌. Camillas earrings bring the WOW factor today. Big diamonds that suits her a well. S. ☺

  8. Everyone looks at the top of their game! This might be one of my favorite outfits of Beatrice’s. I love how several of the ladies went for bright saturated colors

  11. Lovely looks all round. Do you perhaps know if Princess Alexandra attended? She was also not on the balcony and she is definitely a working royal.

    1. Princess Alexandra was at St Paul’s—she sat next to her brother the Duke of Kent. She also appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony after Trooping—you can see her in the full wide photos.

  14. A fashion fest, so fun. I have to say, all of them looked lovely but Kate is from another planet. From the remaining ladies, my favourites were Beatrice and Gabriela Windsor,in that order. I thought Meghan was very appropriate but didn't like the flap in the back nor the huge collar. Not very flattering and disappointing to see a Dior so badly fitted.
Louise was a bit dishevelled but she looked her age, much better than at trooping the colours. I didn't like that she matched her mother, nor Sophies dress.
Sarah has her own bold style and it works. And she can wear a hat. Everybody looked very nice and I liked the bright and cheerful colours.

  15. Thank for this post, too! Yes, there were fabulous looks & styles. Kate was perfect, I really like her hair updo matching perfectly her flower hat and dress cross.. Everything flowed so well together... And the dress didn't crease at all. She was in yellow beside the greenish tiffany/emerald of Princess Anne, it all reminded me of the Queen fav. colours.
Also Camilla outfit was spotted on, and the other winners for me are: Sophie, Zara (Mike Tindall :)), Beatrice.
Top hat winners: Zara, Sophie, Princess Anne.
Curiosity question abt the men styles: were P. Charles, P. William, P. Harry, P. Edward wearing the same type of tight?

  16. I forgot to sign before... I just want to add that some hats are really art masterpiece. I wonder how they create them, put it & stay together! And how they stay fixed even with wind or bad weather... Just wow! Charlotte please, may be...can you do a post with an overall view on previous Jubilee hat parade? Thanks thanks.

  17. Charlotte well done! Love this! I have to say Beatrice's Sophia Webster clutch is darling. And I'm glad you included the Duchess of Gloucester. When I saw her going up the stairs I thought her style was spot on. The 'nubbie' fabric of her dress no doubt has threads the color of her hat running through it (and she looked wonderful the day before as well). And both Sophie Winkleman and Lady Gabriella Kingston looked smashing. I was thinking yesterday Kate doesn't wear peach very often and Lady Gabriella pulled it off well. Lastly, Eugenie in that Emilia Wickstead dress really looks smart (the cut out in the back is clever). I wish she had chosen accessories that weren't black. HM really did miss an explosion of color for the day. Wonder what she was going to wear. I commented on all of the other ladies previously. I have to say, makes me want to get dressed up and go out!

  18. Everyone looks stunning today. So nice, no crazy outfits. Mike looks nice in Zaras hat, as long as he don't try on the rest haha.

  19. I thought everyone looked nice and I LOVE the bright colors :) I just gravitate towards them and love the Starburst reference.

I don’t love the back part of Eugenie’s dress, but I like the front & color plus her accessories. Beatrice and her dress twin both looked lovely and I especially love that pink floral hat. I commented on the other site that I liked many parts of Meghan’s outfit & prefer it with gloves. Such a treat to see them all out! Sue

  20. Everyone looked fabulous the outfits were all tops for me, fashion wise the only miss was Kate’s shoes, they should have been white or a little more lemon than her dress. To me beige makes yellow look dull.

  21. Hmmm I have to say, Kate’s look is definitely my least favourite - and that’s a first in a setting like this. The yellow didn’t work as well compared to Camilla’s ivory (great look- maybe by favourite for the high ranking royals) or the bolder colours. And the style was very drab. The crisis cross is the kind of “interesting” element you would expect from someone over 70. It’s a solid grandmother of the bride look.
I think everyone else looked miles better. All very classic BRF styles. And while Meghan followed a more 60’s elegant Hollywood style (which is beautiful) and therefore doesn’t fit in as nicely with the rest fashion wise, her look was still much better than Kafe‘s today. And that‘s a rare exception for me.
