William and Kate's Boston Itinerary!

There's something decidedly exciting about a pre-Christmas trip to Boston. On Wednesday, the Prince and Princess of Wales will have the opportunity "to get to know" the city, which is the capital of Massachusetts, during a whirlwind three-day trip. Details on the couple's first stateside official trip since 2014 have been in short supply with only nuggets reported in various outlets. Today, Kensington Palace released the full itinerary...

Wednesday, 30 November

Upon arrival in Boston in the late afternoon, the Prince and Princess will kick off the countdown to Friday's Earthshot Awards with a special event attended by Mayor Michelle Wu and Ambassador Caroline Kennedy. Assembling at Speaker's Corner outside City Hall, they will celebrate bringing Earthshot to Boston by lighting up Boston City Hall and other landmarks in green. Prince William, Mayor Wu and Caroline Kennedy will speak at the event.

NBC Boston reports:

'Mayor Michelle Wu will meet the royal couple for a welcome event Wednesday at City Hall Plaza, her office announced Monday. The event, which is slated to happen at 4:45 p.m., is open to the public.

"It's very exciting," Wu said during an appearance on WBUR's "Radio Boston" on Monday. "This is their first trip to the U.S. in eight years and the first royal visit Boston will have had from the Royal Family since 1976 when Queen Elizabeth came."

"We're committed to big ideas," the mayor added. "It will be fun to really see that showcased with all of our work on climate."

Wu said the Prince and Princess of Wales represent "a new generation of leadership. They represent an institution that is hundreds of hundreds of years old and has very intense traditions. But they're also of our generation, and I can't wait to show them this new Boston."'

A local news report from today shares excitement in the city ahead of the royal arrival.

Afterwards, a second, embargoed engagement will take place. There are unconfirmed reports of a possible basketball game appearance or similar sporting event harking back to their 2014 New York trip. This could potentially take place on either Wednesday or Thursday night.

Another 'maybe' on the list which could potentially take place privately: a dinner for the American Friends of the Royal Foundation similar to one the couple attended during the New York trip.

Thursday, 1 December

William and Kate will begin the day by learning about climate innovations which are being incubated in Boston when they pay a visit to Greentown Labs in Somerville. Greentown is recognized as the largest climate technology start-up incubator in North America, having supported more than 500 companies since its founding that have collectively created more than 9,000 jobs and raised more than $4 billion in funding.

From there, the Prince and Princess will travel to the neighbouring city of Chelsea to visit Roca, a non-profit organization focusing on high-risk young people aged 16-24 years old at the centre of urban violence.

The final engagement of the day is embargoed. Again, potentially an evening for a private Royal Foundation dinner could be on the cards...

Friday, 2 December

The visit culminates with the Earthshot Awards on Friday. Before the ceremony that evening, it will be separate engagements for the Waleses. Kate will focus on her early years research with a visit to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. Kensington Palace said: "The Harvard Center has long been a friend of the Royal Foundation and more recently the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, supporting with past research on the importance of the early years."

Whilst Kate's at Harvard, William will enjoy a tour of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library with Caroline Kennedy. The Palace noted: "President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot – which challenged America to put man on the moon – is the key inspiration behind the Earthshot Prize and so His Royal Highness will take the opportunity to hear more about President Kennedy’s inspirational legacy and his connections to Boston. During a tour of the Library and Museum, the Prince will see exhibits from the pivotal years of the Kennedy Administration in the 1960s, ahead of the moon landing in 1969. His Royal Highness will then attend a private lunch and discussion with representatives from the Founding Partner organisations of the Earthshot Prize."

Then, it's time for a star-studded evening at the second annual Earthshot Prize awards ceremony at MGM Music Hall at Fenway.

Once again this year, the Princess will present an award in good company with hosts and presenters, including Shailene Woodley, David Attenborough, Catherine O Hara, Rami Malek, Clara Amfo and Daniel Dae Kim. Performers on the night will see familiar faces Elie Goulding (who performed at the royal wedding), Annie Lennox, Billie Eilish and Chloe x Halle.

For the inaugural awards last year, guests were asked to choose outfits with sustainability in mind. I don't doubt we'll see it again on Friday. Last year, Kate repeated her beautiful lavender Alexander McQueen Grecian gown.

In terms of Kate's sartorial choices, I expect we'll see a US designer or brand chosen on at least a couple of occasions, though given the sustainability element I'm expecting repeats, too. In New York in 2014, the then Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the Carlyle Hotel wearing the Seraphine Maternity Marine marron and black tweed coat. Almost a decade later, the style remains available here.

For the private Royal Foundation dinner that evening, it was the Beulah London Amara dress.

The following day, Kate sported the GOAT Washington Crepe Coat. Quite incredibly, it's another piece from the trip which remains available.

For a conservation reception and NBA Game (with Beyonce and Jay Z), Kate elected for US-based fashion -- choosing the Tory Burch Bettina coat and J Crew black skinny jeans.

The couple began their final day in New York with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Kate wore a Mulberry coat.

During a GREAT reception afterwards, Kate chose Seraphine's Vanessa dress.

The trip ended with the glamorous St Andrews' 600th Anniversary dinner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Kate repeated her ink blue off-the-shoulder Jenny Packham...and those emeralds -- which were a private gift. It was a classic Kate evening look!

Do you have any style predictions for Boston? What engagements are you most looking forward to?

  1. I'm looking forward to this visit. This is a very important visit for The Prince and Princess of Wales. I wish them well and hope all goes well for them. Hopefully no media distractions from the issue's they want to highlight. I have no doubt that The Princess will look beautiful for all the events planned. Too many gown's to choose from. If going green for the event, maybe the green dress she wore on her last tour reworked or I really liked the green vampire dress. With new to her emeralds. Maybe the Princess of Wales emerald earrings. I'm expecting a big response to their visit by the people of Boston. I would imagine the security around them will be even bigger than their last visit to America, now they are Prince and Princess of Wales. Thanks Charlotte. S☺️

So great to have them here in USA. They are a lovely couple and a great team together. Definitely proud of them both!

  3. It’s inevitable that when British royalty visit Boston, there will be tea in the harbor jokes; but I hope the focus will be on climate change, the greatest threat we face.
I hope the Princess reprises her pale blue coat and blouse from September, my favorite work day look this year.
When my family emigrated from Ireland, they came to Boston. My grandfather was born in Somerville and educated at Harvard. Pleased the itinerary includes these places.

  5. She will need warm clothes. The breeze off the Charles River makes the city very cold. I lived there for a year and a half of college and it’s a beautiful city. Except for that City Hall building! I was born and raised in Western Massachusetts.

  6. If only they could take in a Boston Bruins hockey game! Our team is off to a historic 12-0 home winning streak but I'm not sure next week's games would fit into the royals' schedule. I look forward to seeing all the news about their visit!

  7. Thank you for the post Charlotte! One of the engagements I’m looking forward to is the one with Caroline Kennedy. I’m curious what Kate’s attire choices will be this time around. Super excited to see!

  8. I live in one of the towns the Prince and Princess are visiting this week and I am so incredibly excited they'll be here...and also sad for myself because of course, the one time they come to Boston, I'll be out of town! I may try to see them at City Hall on Wednesday. Roca does such great work, so I'm happy to see a visit planned. Also looking forward to reading about Kate's visit to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard!

  10. Welcome to Boston!! I hope they enjoy our city as it's magical at this time of year! Where the Awards is being hosted is a brand new venue that just opened next to our baseball stadium Fenway Park. Tons of excitement that the Royals are visiting❣️

  11. Super-excited about the Boston visit! Given Kate's penchant for sartorially dressing in the colors of a country, I would love to see Kate rewear the red gown from the China State visit; the blue gown she wore in India; or the red one-shoulder gown she wore for her 40th birthday pictures. Another option would be the colorful Tory Burch (American designer) she wore for an evening event in Bhutan. She also has three very pretty tea-length red dresses: one with the a-symmetrical neckline, one with a 1950s vibe, and one that is sparkly. She also has such a good collection of 'holiday' dresses for daywear. Can't wait to see them both in the US!

    2. I like your suggestions too although I would stop the theme dressing if I were her (almost all of the time anyway, that way it has more impact when it is done, e.g. the late Queen wearing green in Ireland).

  12. It's the first time I've considered a visit to a city I used to know so well. Very hard to pick representative engagements, but then the city and metro area must have changed so much since I was there. SO many of the best schools/universities are located there -- it's quite an educated population. I remember just loving what Kate wore to NYC -- truthfully, would be happy just to see them again.

    2. Boston has changed so much. When I was there, it was impossible to find an apt without a few roommates. But now those cozy apts in a floor of a wooden row house are multimillion dollar redos. Gendel's Den is still in Harvard Square, but Julia Child is long gone. The student housing has increased 1200%. It didn't have AC, so in August we used to sleep (with the spiders) in the computer lab, when the computer was card-fed and looked like Katherine Hepburn would appear any minute. We walked to the clamshell to hear the Boston Pops with Arthur Fiedler on July 4th. And I hope the B school is still full of lilacs!

  14. I'm really excited - I was in Boston back in 1992 as a student and I absolutely loved the city. It will be a treat to see the Cambridges there! I can't wait and hope for some great repeats. Kate's lavender Greek gown was one of my all-times favourites; this year I'd like to see a red or purple gown. But I'll be happy with whatever Kate wears! 😉 Zora

  16. I think she will wear an ethical American brand (Gabriela Hearst...),a vintage haute couture dress a la Bella hadid, a repeated green dress, a dress from her 2011-2012 era wardrobe (the black Macqueen, the green sports award, the lavender Macqueen...).She will repeat an accessory from her 2014 or 2011 USA trip(I will say the bootie...).

  17. I don't know anything about this kind of thing, but it occurs to me that it might have been appropriate - a nice gesture - for the Prince to have invited his brother to present one of the awards in Boston. I'd be interested in people's take on this idea. Otherwise, a wonderful post. How exciting they are coming to the US after so long!

    1. It would be a nice gesture to invite Harry and Meghan to Boston for a private dinner together. Maybe that's in the works for one of the embargoed evening events? It would be 'neutral ground' (neither the UK nor California) and another step toward reconciliation and healing--my sincere wish for these two brothers.

      Delete
    2. First, many thanks as always Charlotte for your wonderful blog! Re William asking Harry to present: if he had invited Harry to present then sadly the media would have focused on THAT instead of focusing on the winners and the city of Boston and all of the things that W & K want to highlight on this trip. Look at what happened with the Queen's funeral and I rest my case. Not blaming H & M for it at all, staying neutral, but this is about Earthshot and the City of Boston rolling out the green carpet for the people who are involved in the project. Okay so on to conjectures about what Kate will wear, being mindful that I am no fashionista at all but what the hey: I think she will wear one outfit from a US designer or at least American accessories. I think she will dress beautifully but not over-the-top and probably wear trousers for her visit to Harvard (I hope that President Biden's desire to meet them doesn't through a spanner in the works for her visit.) For the awards, my guess is that she will wear something in the color green. I hope it's not the Vampire dress because I really didn't like that one. But then the off-the-shoulder Jenny Packham she wore in Jamaica is a little too-too in wintry Boston and I don't really like that one either. Hmmm . . . (I am mentally tossing gowns around in Kate's bedroom right now) it isn't green but the blue gown she wore in Mumbai is my all-time favorite gown but hmmm . . . not quite right either. Okay, so I vote for her wearing something in velvet as a nod to it being close to Christmas and it being cold. Not the plunging number though--maybe they might have altered that gorgeous blue gown she wore when she was pregnant? And I am probably completely wrong so will now hand it over to the real experts like Vittoria and co. Valerie in Arizona who wishes right now that she lived in any other county but the one she lives in. Oh and thank goodness that the big World Cup games were played today and not in the next three days! England and the US can relax for a bit.

    3. I don’t think there was any plan for the brothers to even see each other

      Delete
    4. I see where you are going but that would take the focus off the award winners themselves. It’s honestly too bad that they both happen to be on the east coast at similar times so people keep doing comparisons between the two couples. More clickbait.

Charlotte, thank you for everything you do! As an American I’m so excited that they are back and I wish I lived close enough to see them :) Sue

    6. Has Harry ever invited William to Invictus for example?

      Delete
    7. William was at the first Invictus. But in general the RF does not seem to share credit -- Princess Eugenie has been working with a charity Project O to clean the oceans of plastic and with Elephant Family. I don't know why William or Charles never says things like "So many of my family members also care about the environment," for example. And I really hate the hype about which couple will win America! There are 360 million people in America. If you see our news, you'll know no one (except maybe Oprah!) can win America. I am a devoted H&M fan and love all they do, and I'm sure W&K will have a great time for a great cause, but the only competition is in tabloids.

    8. Nicoline, I couldn't agree more. This is a very important and high profile visit for The Prince and Princess of Wales. They are in Boston for Earthshot and to visit charity's with similar interests as their own. Family business is just that and should remain private. S.😀

      Delete
    9. Why just say William or Charles. Neither does Harry nor the other royals like York sisters, Wessexes etc. All the different household stay out of each other's way and sort of seem to be competing for attention and fundings.

      Delete
    10. Family business should remain private. It’s unfortunate that William’s godmother created a controversy back home though. Glad official comments condemned her behavior.
I am a Sussex supporter but see absolutely no reason for Harry to be included in this visit. It’s a working Royal event and he’s left the firm. It’s not a charity in which he’s ever been involved. Whatever happens between the brothers is a private matter.

I would love to see Kate in a velvet gown, but I don’t recall her wearing velvet before. Also looking forward to some fabulous jewels on Friday evening, some emeralds or rubies! I hope they have a wonderful visit to the US.

    1. Indeed, she has rarely worn velvet gowns. In December 2011, she wore a black velvet gown with a sweetheart neckline by McQueen; it was comparable, some would say, to Diana's 1981 Emmanuel black taffeta dress with sweetheart neckline.

    1. There’s no reason at all for William and Catherine to visit the White House. They aren’t here as official representatives of the UK. Glad that an actual state visit with another important ally can put paid to that nonsense.

    2. Yes indeed no need to visit the White House. President Biden will be in Boston on Friday. A meeting might happen then. I'd guess the next British Royal to visit the White House will be the new King, unless the Prince and Princess of Wales go on his behalf. S. 😊

This time I expect a lot of repeats as well and let's hope she choses a good ones.

  23. I have to say, as a midwestern American woman of color, it’s just really not a good look, to NOT see your only brother/nephew & niece (and only people of color in your immediate AND extended family), when -as a rich person- you’re a hop skip & jump away…and this in light of (KCs friend/PWs godmother/QE’s most senior) lady-in-waiting, Susan Hussey, resigning due to a racist incident- and in public no less…

    ReplyDelete
  24. More than a beautiful rewear, vintage piece, or new gown, I hope that she does an updo that isn't severe or aging. Most crucially, how can William and Catherine properly justify international/intercontinental travel for an award aligned with the purpose of "environmentalism"? Shouldn't they innovate or find alternative ways to present this award without increasing their carbon footprint?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, I wish I could travel to Boston for this (very historical and emotional to me) meeting of the children of my two favorite public figures: JFK’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy and Princess Diana’s son, Prince William. Looking so forward to the pictures. All that’s missing is Neil Diamond singing ‘Sweet Caroline’ who has ties to Boston and Princess Diana.💝
