The Princess of Wales Wows in Bright Green Gown & Emerald Choker for Earthshot Prize

Tonight's the night! The Earthshot Prize, the centrepiece of the Prince and Princess of Wales' Boston visit unfolded in MGM Music Hall at Fenway with a star-studded ceremony.

The couple made a stylish arrival after a busy day which saw Kate visit Harvard and William spending time at the President John F. Kennedy Library & Museum with Caroline Kennedy and her children Jack and Tatiana. He rounded off the visit by catching up with President Joe Biden.

A brief arrival video.

For the second annual prize, it was important to William and Earthshot to host the annual event in Boston in homage to the Massachusettsan president whose time in office inspired the effort; President Kennedy’s ‘Moonshot’ programme in the 1960s united millions of people around the goal of reaching the Moon. On Wednesday at City Hall, the Prince said: "Sixty years ago, President John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot speech laid down a challenge to American innovation and ingenuity. 'We choose to go to the moon, not because it is easy but because it is hard.' It was that Moonshot speech that inspired me to launch the Earthshot Prize with the aim of doing the same for climate change as President Kennedy did for the space race. And where better to hold this year’s Awards Ceremony than in President Kennedy’s hometown, in partnership with his daughter and the Foundation that continues his legacy."

Created by Prince William and the Royal Foundation, the Earthshot Prize has led a global search for the most effective and innovative solutions to the greatest environmental challenges facing the planet. A Kensington Palace source has described the prize as William's "Superbowl moment", adding: "He looks forward to continuing to use the platform each year to shine a light on some of the most impactful projects doing amazing things around the world to save our planet’s future."

The Earthshot Prize is based on five ‘Earthshot goals': protect and restore nature; fix our climate; clean our air; revive our oceans; build a waste-free world. Five £1 million prizes will be awarded each year for a decade, providing at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems by 2030. The event is "a celebration of the natural world, focussed on turning the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism by celebrating the people and places driving change.

As part of the effort, a global alliance was formed with an array of well-known organisations and foundations, including the UN Environment Programme, WWF, the Green Belt Movement, John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, National Geographic, Jeff Bezos' Earth Fund, Rob & Melani Walton Foundation, and Mike Bloomberg's philanthropies.

David Beckham was announced today as a presenter.

The star-studded line up of presenters also included Catherine O Hara (as it 'tis the season... I will always and ever remember Catherine for her outstanding performance in Home Alone). "Repairing our planet is one of the most important things we can do in our lifetimes. The passion and ambition of this year's Earthshot finalists is much needed in a world of such turmoil, and I am truly honoured to play a role in helping them share their work with the world," the actress and comedian said.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Mr. Robot star Rami Malek said: "The fifteen finalists of this year's Earthshot Prize are deeply inspiring. They are dedicating their lives to building solutions that will repair our planet, and I can't wait to present an award to one of the incredible winners for 2022."

Also on presenting duty, actress and advocate Shailene Woodley: "It is an honour to be a presenter. I am thrilled to play a part in spotlighting the finalists."

Performances on the night included Elie Goulding (who performed at William and Kate's wedding), Chloe x Halle, Billie Eilish and Annie Lennox.

Carly Ledbetter reports Chloe's and Halle's looks were chosen to "represent the earth — the water and the greenery and the land".

The amazing winners.

The Earthshot Prize Medal is inspired by the iconic 'Earthrise' photograph taken from the Moon by astronaut William Anders aboard Apollo 8 in 1968. It was selected to reflect the "beauty and fragility" of our planet.

Hello! reports:

'Prince William has urged the world to "choose the path of hope, optimism, and urgency to repair our planet," after hailing the five winners of the 2022 Earthshot Prize Awards at a glittering ceremony in Boston.

He told the audience: "When I founded this Prize in 2020, it was with the ambition to harness the same spirit of ingenuity, that inspired President John F. Kennedy to challenge the American people to put a person on the moon within a decade. So, it has been an honour to share the stories of our Earthshot winners and finalists from the heart of his hometown.

"I believe that the Earthshot solutions you have seen this evening prove we can overcome our planet's greatest challenges, and by supporting and scaling them we can change our future."'

Afterwards, William and Kate mingled with guests.

The ceremony will air around the world on BBC One in the UK, PBS in the United States and Multichoice across Africa. The show will also be available globally on 4 December on YouTube.

PBS President Paula Kerger said she is "delighted" PBS will be the US broadcast home. BBC Head of Commissioning, Jack Bootle noted: "Last year's ceremony won a BAFTA for Best Live Event: it was a festival of hope and human ingenuity. This year's will be every bit as spectacular."

For the inaugural awards in London last year, guests were asked to carefully choose their ensembles with sustainability in mind. The Princess repeated her lavender Grecian Alexander McQueen gown, styled with morganite Kiki McDonough earrings and Oscar de la Renta pumps.

The Princess wowed in a body-skimming, sleek, bright green dress by Solace London. With the theme of sustainability in mind, Kate rented the £350 maxi dress from Hurr Collective for £74.

The Sabina style is described as "a floor length modern gown featuring an exaggerated neckline. Body-conscious fit. Self-lined to sculpt the body. Concealed closure belt to define the waist. Signature high kick split. Crafted from a medium weight stretch crepe knit. Concealed centre zip fastening".

The British womenswear brand was founded in 2013 by long-time friends Laura Taylor and Ryan Holliday-Stevens, Solace London "blurs the line between statement making and wearability".

The Princess debuted a rather majestic piece of jewellery from the royal vault this evening...

For the first time, Kate wore the utterly dazzling Queen Mary's Emerald Choker.

The Court Jeweller reports: "The necklace comes straight from the Buckingham Palace vaults. It’s part of the Delhi Durbar Parure, a set of jewels collected by Queen Mary at the time of the Delhi Durbar in December 1911." Below, the piece was showcase as part of a 2006 Buckingham Palace exhibition. Celebrating Elizabeth II's 80th birthday, it was the largest ever exhibition of 80 gowns and jewellery from the 1940's to the present day, worn by Her late Majesty on private and official engagements.

The piece is closely associated with the late Princess Diana who wore it on numerous occasions. Below, we see Diana wearing the piece with an elegant Jacques Azagury gown at the Tate Gallery in 1997 on her 36th birthday.

Of course, Diana memorably wore it as a headband in Melbourne in 1985.

The UFO No More team suggest Kate's earrings are the Asprey Emerald and Diamond Halo earrings mounted in platinum. I've long thought the Princess likely received a number of impressive items of jewellery for her 40th birthday, and I do wonder if these might have been such a gift. The pair are about £9,000 and there's matching necklaces, rings and bracelets available.

Kate wore her sparkling Gianvito Rossi Rania pumps.

Described as: "A true Cinderella shoe, the silver-toned Rania pumps from Gianvito Rossi are lavishly embellished with clusters of Swarovski crystals. Made from mesh with suede inserts, they perch atop 105mm stiletto heels."

Thank you so much for following Royal Visit Boston with me on Chronicling Kate! I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on tonight's look :)

  12. Taking a page from QEII - wear a color that people will see! What are those earrings? I know that she is the PssOW, but I'd like to see her wear some impressive jewelry that is NOT associated with Diana. I'd like her to be her own person and not continually compared to Diana, and avoiding Diana-associated jewelry would be a step in that direction. But, on the upside, seems that Charles is opening the vaults. This necklace was just a loan to Diana, so went back to the vaults when she died.

    1. Hi Anonymous, I understand your sentiments about jewellery Diana has worn, but with the exception of personal gifts that were given to the former Princess, these are family jewels that were worn by Queen Mary, and gifted to Diana by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. In the years to come we will often see our beautiful new Princess wearing pieces that her Mother-in-law wore, and I love to see these precious moments, as I’m sure William does. You can see how immensely proud he is of her, and together they radiate compassion, kindness, love, empathy and humility. Tonight is Williams night to shine a spotlight on our Earth, and the sparkling star he has beside him is everything to him, and despite the other goings on from this week, they have braved it all with smiles & warmth that has been so natural & heart warming. Yesterday when they both took an impromptu walk about, they shook hands, took selfies with the crowd, sent a “hello to Mallory”, the Mum of a lady who’d lined up in the freezing cold to meet them, kneeled to speak to little ones, and joked and laughed as they appreciated the many, many people who had come out to meet them. The next few weeks are going to be difficult for our lovely Prince & Princess - it must be overwhelmingly sad for them all, as I doubt a happy reconciliation will now ever happen. To quote Omid Scobie … “this is William’s SuperBowl moment” … and tonight, with his beautiful Princess by his side, they scored a touchdown! And, there couldn’t be a more important cause than this one.

    2. Yes Diana did wear this necklace but they are Cambridge emeralds. Worn by Queen Mary and the previous Duchess Of Cambridge. What I'm wondering is why wait till now to wear them. I really feel this has nothing to do with her new title. Just going on other pieces she has worn and her close relationship with the late Queen, I think I'd she requested something from the vaults she got it. I don't think anyone would avoid their late Mother in laws jewellery, especially when Diana had such beautiful jewels. As for comparing her to Diana, as a big fan of the late Princess I don't think so. She's very much her own Woman. Diana was so famous this will never stop. They will be comparing Charlotte to her Grandmother as she grows up. S 😊

    3. The necklace is not part of the Cambridge emeralds. It was given to Mary by the Ladies of India. And I love this necklace. But there actually isn’t much in the royal family vaults that Diana wore. QEII did not loan much to her. Only one tiara, this necklace, the Saudi diamond necklaces a few times, the pearl choker. Not much else, I don’t think. Just saying there are other things she could wear that don’t scream Diana. And I just wish we’d all stop comparing her to Diana. And as an aside, not sure I’d have wanted that engagement ring - huge reminder of a marriage that emploded so publicly.

    4. Lovely comment, Dee! My sentiments exactly. Thank you! Zora

    5. I agree with the stop the extensive comparisons to what Diana wore, etc. Okay to mention it, but enough already. Also, I have the same feeling that the engagement ring, especially without the stones even having been reset, constantly reminding of an unsuccessful marriage, to say the least. I wouldn't even want it around. Kate is very kind about this. For William to have wanted his mom around and to be a part of his life, I think there are thousands of other ways for that to have occurred.

      Delete
    6. Anon 13:15 This could be looked at in another way. The engagement ring Charles gave to Diana should have been the promise of a long and happy life together, like his parents' marriage. For many reasons, that didn't work out for them. But, Diana still wore her ring after the divorce. It must have still carried some significance to her. I'm sure William very much associated that ring with his mother. William and Kate seem to have forged that very happy union for which Diana had hoped. Even more so than his grandparents. Maybe they look at it as redeeming that original promise. I'm sure Kate not only associates the ring with the happiness her and William enjoy, but sees it as a treasured family heirloom. I would think, too, knowing how they treat each other with such respect, that he would have probably had a conversation with Kate about the ring, before he gave it to her.

    7. I agree RM in PA, & so well put! It is a piece of history & as history goes..... it just keeps taking on new chapters. Will & Kate have made it their own. I actually don't even associate it with Diana anymore. When I see it I just think of Will & Kate.

  20. I love this chocker once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales. What a lovely gesture. The evening dress doesn't flatter her slim frame because it elongates unnecessarily her bodice and gives the impression that she has short legs despite her high heels. The nearly neon green is too hard in my opinion. So I am not a fan of this dress.
I am wondering if she has a complete new make-up which gives her that special glow. It would be very interesting to know the actual brands she used today.

  35. Love that she rented but I'm wondering is the dress still available for renting. It's worth a lot more now after being worn by a future Queen. Will it be sold for charity. I'm delighted to see her finally wearing some of the famous Cambridge emeralds. I hope she got all of them except the emerald drops used in the tiara. I'm not a fan of the bracelet made from them. They also have a beautiful emerald stomacher that hasn't been seen since Queen Mary. Would make a nice big pair of earrings and necklace or large ring. While I'm delighted to see her finally wearing some of the Cambridge emeralds I'm not too sure about the chocker. I would love to see her wearing it as a hairband. This dress, hair slicked back with a emerald hairband and The Princess of Wales emerald earrings gifted to Queen Alexandra. Queen Mary kept her jeweler very busy changing them. The chocker was a longer necklace and was worn by Mary above the Cambridge emerald necklace worn last by Queen Elizabeth. I remember the last time these emeralds were worn, absolutely stunning when they catch the light. Thanks Charlotte. S 😊

There is no one better out here in social medial covering the PoW than you because your approach is so comprehensive and thorough - true journalism. By far.

Regard the PoW, I have to say so many things - the dress is incredible, her hair is just chestnut perfect, the best I have seen her in a long time. Yet the MOST flattering I have so say is her make up - finally, finally, the smokey eye makeup absolutely on point, with beautiful lashes and brows. It was professionally done and looks sensational. I am thinking that the foundation is no longer Bobbi Brown, but Armani or Chanel.

I love this look ! This color suits her wonderfully well and what a pretty necklace. And these shoes are the perfect choice for this ceremony. I'd love to see her wear bracelets, but that doesn't really seem to be her style.

  51. Stunning and what a wonderful charity. Also so happy for Aboriginal Rangers Network that are protecting the Australian Great Barrier receiving the prize. Catherine looks amazing and I love everything.

  52. Stunning! Great dress, fantastic jewels and the winners... hat tip to them. Charlotte, thank you for your coverage of this visit, it was worth the wait. I found it really interesting.

  53. Love the dress, especially the color. Not the first time she's worn that color. Works very well with brunette hair.

A rental! My brother's wife rented her wedding dress. More people should consider renting for special occasions. Saves money and resources for something likely to be worn only once.

  54. Love this! Rented dress and old emeralds from the vault. I was hoping it wasn’t going to be too long before we saw Kate in jewels closely associated with Diana but I don’t think we will ever see them worn as a headband again! Sue in WA

  55. As the years pass The Princess has become more elegant and poised with each passing event. I think what is most amazing is her genuine concern, interest and kindness that radiates out from her. She has become a true role model. While she has always been a beautiful young lady with extreme grace and dignity, there is just something spectacular and so genuine about The Princess of Wales. I adore the fact that she rented this most amazing gown. It shows her true attention to detail for the cause at hand. She is simply breathtaking in this gown and jewels. I think when we caught that first glimpse of her in her wedding gown, we knew we were in for a treat. What has evolved is a true role model who exudes grace, poise, dignity, kindness manners, and beauty. Reaffirming that virtues still matter. Pure perfection. God Bless Mr. and Mrs. Middleton for raising a wonderful young lady. I think her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth and Diana, Princess of Wales would be very proud of the current Princess of Wales. Thank you Charlotte for your posts.

  56. The first thing that came to mind when I saw her dress was of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Of course, ice cream should not be that color (the food coloring is unnecessary) but the dress is the typical color of MCC ice cream and I don't think it worked well. A different shade of green I think would have been better but the rest of Kate's look overall was lovely.

  57. Well, I was expecting a lot of complaints about the Princess's wearing a new dress, but then I read that she'd rented it, which was a brilliant decision in the context. Very smart.

There is much I like about this look, but there are a few problems, too. I'm a fan of sleek minimalism and have admired Solace's designs for some time. I also love the green shade -- it seems to come closest to Erin green -- which the Princess wears well. She has a fair amount of green in her wardrobe, and it flatters her brunette coloring and her hazel-green eyes. And, of course, green was appropriate for the event.

However, there's something about the proportions of the dress that doesn't quite flatter the Princess's long-waisted, short-legged figure. I'm a little puzzled by this, but I think it has something to do with the combination of an off-the-shoulder neckline with a tight fit. Something just looks -- off. I also think the very traditional design of the emerald jewelry didn't quite work. This dress called for more modern jewelry, while the emerald-green actually clashes a bit with the Erin green. When you're pairing shades of the same color, you need to be aware that they won't always harmonize.

Finally, I am just not on board with the Princess's hair these days. I find it too long, insufficiently polished, and this hairstyle made me think "Barbie doll".

(Oh, yes, and I've said this before: I really, really don't like sparkly shoes. They always look tacky to me, no matter how much they cost.)

Don't mistake me: overall, the look elicited a big smile from me -- it was both glamorous and creative, and I felt it comprised the "wow" effect that the Princess needed to present at an evening event abroad while also meeting the demands of sustainability. However, a closer look did result in a few quibbles, which no one needs to take seriously. I'm just being nit-picky.

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the jewelry with the dress. The dichotomy of a modern, streamlined dress paired with the emeralds leaves me a little cold.
And yes, I agree about the hair lately too. It's missing the bounce that we are used to seeing .

    2. I agree with your comments again Vittoria are you a stylist by chance?? I read your comments and find I totally agree with you even though they are different to what my first thoughts are, it's always interesting to look at things through another person's lens! me though I like sparkly shoes ;)

  58. I love when she goes sleek and unfussy in her evening wear! Fun color for her and so amazing to see her wear that choker. I love how confident she looks in a dress very few women could pull off. Might not be the most flattering dress she’s ever worn (the fit kind of looks off) but so genius for Kate to spotlight the sustainability and thriftiness of “renting the runway.” I hope her lead inspires others to consider this option.

Her hair this trip has looked amazing - I’m happy seeing the straightening treatments from last spring have grown out.

  59. Love the dress and the color, just not together. That photo of Diana wearing the necklace as a head band made me 😃. Miss her.

Finally, Prince William should have flown in the Eartshot finalists and winners to this event. Not ZOOM it. It made Eathshot weirdly about the prize presenters and the hosts.

  60. Ok…so I love her gorgeous hair and makeup! I do feel this dress is wearing her though. But I’m thrilled to see she went with a rental! Side note and a bit unrelated: I often see many comments here re fashion saying things like “only Kate could pull this off”, “only Kate has this figure to make this look good”, “if I had a figure like Kate’s…” I say wear what you love and feel confident in regardless of rules! Life’s too short to be pigeon-holed by fashion “laws”. In 2022 body positivity is growing and we can contribute to that even in a small way :) Jill

  61. I am surprised how much it like that dress. The cut and neckline are very flattering on her. The almost neon green is so not my thing, but Kate can pull it off. The emerald choker doesn’t go well with the outfit though. It doesn’t compliment the neckline nor the colour.

  62. I love any shade of green so I absolutely love the look. The Princess is so beautiful both inside and out. Prince William and Catherine bring hope, civility, and duty to a world that is increasingly ugly. As an American, I love the fact they were here but only wish I could have seen them in person.

  63. She looks amazing. And so clever to surprise all of us waiting for a repeat with a rented gown. She was stunning. Just what the awards needed lots of glamour and impact.

I don’t like the shade of green on the dress , but it’s a nice dress. The emeralds are stunning. I liked that she rented the dress. And let’s face it, she is using old family jewelry too. The Prince looked happy to be in Boston. And one good more great thing is slowly happening: the press is finally starting to call her Princess Kate. I was so sick of them saying “Kate Middleton”.

  65. I watched the Earthshot awards ceremony on PBS today. It was wonderful! I think the Oscars should hire whoever produced the show--it didn't run long, it was pertinent, the videos of the prize winners were so well done! Valerie in Arizona

    2. I think you’re mistaken about the number of engagements in November. I looked in the archives for November, and there were quite a few. I don’t think it’s necessary to list them since that information is available.

    3. Yes indeed Joanne, they had been stepping up more but I don't think any of them expected the late Queen to pass so quickly. Moving house, grief and the shock and responsibility of becoming The Prince and Princess of Wales. Family issues on top of all that, I think they are doing very well. Queen Elizabeth would be very proud of both of them. S 😊

    4. I’m sorry but working 4 days in October and 8 in November is simply not enough work

    5. 13:14, It seems you confuse work with public appearances. By your account, I am sure I don't work enough, I am never in the papers.
And no, their work is not to be seen. It is to support the monarch and the British people. Which they do exceedingly well.

    6. Even if you look at the court circular there are very few meetings . Their range of organisations they support are very minimal. They need to relate more to the general public and increase the range of organisations they support - it’s mainly mental health, children and the arts and sports.Where is the support for animal charities who are really struggling with animals being surrendered as people can’t afford to feed them . The Queen was patron of many charities who are now left without a patron or support. Having a patron makes a great difference to a charity. Between the two of them they undertake far fewer than the Princess Royal does on her own . The Countess of Wessex also undertakes far more engagements . They are now senior royals and in my opinion need to increase their workload and step up and support this country more through the very difficult times ahead
