The Princess of Wales in Emilia Wickstead for "Fascinating" Harvard Early Years Visit

It's the final day of the Prince and Princess of Wales' Boston trip!

Before the Earthshot Prize gets underway this evening, William and Kate undertook separate solo engagements. The Princess visited the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, a "world leader" on research into the lifelong impact of experiences in early childhood.

Kensington Palace noted Harvard has been a "long-standing friend" to the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. When Kate officially launched the centre in June 2021, she shared its inaugural report which set out recommendations on how we can all contribute to the issue whilst bringing together leading research from experts in the sector. The report was written in collaboration with the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University and the London School of Economics.

Kate's Royal Foundation Centre sees a team of six working on three objectives: promoting and commissioning high-quality research to increase knowledge and share best practice. An element of their roles is maintaining contact and collaboration with institutions like Harvard.

Kensington Palace said: "The Harvard Center focuses on leveraging advances in science to inform the policy landscape and to increase the impact of programs. Her Royal Highness will have a discussion with researchers about the advances in science that can be harnessed to achieve a promising future for every child."

A recent video from the Harvard Center on how early childhood experiences impact us throughout our lives.

Harvard are determined to create innovative new approaches and said: "Decades of research have illuminated many of the causes and correlations of negative outcomes for children who grow up facing adversity. When it comes to solutions, however, the early childhood field has produced only modest impacts. The focus has been on proving that programs are effective on average—rather than understanding how they work and for whom."

Indeed, only a week ago, Kate wrote a brief piece to coincide with several articles by the Telegraph and their royal correspondent, Hannah Furness, celebrating the Princess' commitment to early years and outlining the challenges ahead: "Not enough is being done. If we are going to tackle the sorts of complex challenges we face today like homelessness, violence and addiction, which are so often underpinned by poverty and poor mental health, we have to fully appreciate those most preventative years and do everything we can to nurture our children and those who care for them. We have an incredible opportunity, armed with all we now know as a result of the work of dedicated scientists, researchers and practitioners, to make a huge difference to the mental and physical health of generations to come. That is why I am determined to continue to shine a light on this issue and to do everything I can to secure much greater focus on those first crucial few years for the youngest members of our society - they are, after all, our future."

I recently read a report in the Guardian which found the impact of inflation and the cost-of-living crisis will negatively affect early years supports and have a ripple effect on family life in the UK:

'Elaine Drayton, one of the authors of the IFS report, said governments had prioritised spending on early years provision over the past decade, with new childcare entitlements for disadvantaged two-year-olds and for three- and four-year-olds in working families, and expanding provision at a time when other public services were being cut.

But early years providers are facing rapidly rising costs that are eroding the value of their budgets. Childcare providers’ costs had already been rising faster than economy-wide inflation over the last few years but they face an even steeper rise in the coming years,” Drayton said.

The result is that the significant increase in the 2021 spending review – up to £3.75bn a year until 2024-25, covering the universal entitlement to 15 hours a week childcare, rising to 30 hours for many working parents – will be undone by higher-than-expected inflation.

Neil Leitch, the chief executive of the Early Years Alliance, said: “We know that early years providers are deeply committed to providing high-quality education to our youngest children, as well as the childcare that many parents rely on – but this alone isn’t enough to pay the bills and keep the doors open.

“The fact is that the early years funding system in this country is broken and the way in which the government views and treats our vital sector needs an urgent rethink before it completely implodes.”'

The Royal Foundation's website noted: "The visit was also an opportunity to highlight the importance of collaboration between international organisations in showcasing and sharing best practice. Center Director, Jack Shonkoff described the visit as a 'wonderful opportunity for shared learning as part of a global effort to improve life outcomes for young children'. He raised several important areas where science is pointing towards new strategies. Firstly, the interconnections between the brain and the rest of the body and the importance of connecting learning and health agendas; second the impacts that the broader conditions and environments in which families raise young children have on developmental outcomes."

Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of the Royal Foundation of the Prince and Princess of Wales said: “We are grateful to the Harvard Center on the Developing Child for hosting such a fascinating session and sharing their latest thinking. There is so much scope for further joint working here, given our missions are so aligned, and I look forward to even more collaboration between the two teams in future.”

Another look.

We've very much seen the Princess opt for bespoke pieces by British brands overall during this trip. Today was no exception (though I think we'll see a repeat gown tonight) with Kate selecting an impeccably tailored, custom-made Emilia Wickstead houndstooth dress (with thanks to UFO No More). The collared piece is midi length with a skinny matching belt.

Below, the Mila dress which Kate's piece is based on. Note the same collared top and fitted silhouette with pencil skirt. It's currently available at My Theresa.

The Princess carried the divine Mulberry Harlow bag. The combination of the dress and bag has a very classic feel to it. The top-handled satchel style bag features a twist ring handle. The piece is sold out.

Kate's earrings were very much chosen with Earthshot in mind. The Gold Spine Hoop earrings are handcrafted in Britain by designer Lenique Louis in her London Studio. They were created "as a playful take on coral reef".  UFO No More confirms Kate's pair are "a bespoke, smaller version of the pair below".

Due to Lenique's rapid and inspiring success, she was asked to showcase her jewellery for the King and the late Queen at the Prince's Trust 40th Anniversary Celebration and asked to become a Brand Ambassador for the trust.

The Princess completed the look with her black suede Gianvito Rossi 105 suede pumps.

Just as Kate's Harvard visit wrapped up, Prince William arrived at the JFK Presidential Library & Museum for a tour of the prestigious building with Caroline Kennedy and her children Jack and Tatiana Schlossberg.

As we'll discuss in greater detail tonight, JFK provided the inspiration for Earthshot and of course this trip to Boston stems from the connection. The Kennedy family is steeped in American history and the legacy of JFK remains as potent today as ever.

Ambassador Kennedy is a passionate supporter of the prize and just this week has been making calls to Earthshot finalists.

The library-museum is located on Columbia Point in the Dorchester neighbourhood of Boston, Massachusetts, next to the University of Massachusetts.

From there, William was delighted to meet President Joe Biden. The President had another engagement in Boston and schedules were arranged to ensure the meeting could take place.

CNN reports:

“Good to see you again!” Biden said as he met the prince outside the library.

Biden was last at the Boston library in September, where he delivered remarks on his administration’s cancer moonshot program.

“We expect that they will discuss their shared climate goals, prioritization of mental health issues and decreasing the burden of the disease,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said aboard Air Force One en route to Boston ahead of the meeting".

We're just a few hours away from the Earthshot Prize. Kensington Palace shared several photos from yesterday's rehearsals.

The Princess will be on presenting duties tonight.

I anticipate we'll see a repeat for Kate. What are you hoping for?

  1. Unexpectedly, this houndstooth dress might be my *favourite* outfit that she has ever worn! Her hair is perfect: she has a marginally deeper side part than normal, it's a rich dark brown, and it's bouncy not stringy! Her makeup is also PERFECT. I LOVE this look!

    2. Also my first thought. I love seeing new clothes, for me. But, for her, she should have been recycling for the better PR that goes with it.

  3. I love the color and even the print although it seems a bit busy. I don't understand why the dress is so tight that it seems to impede her walking. It's way too long and lean -- I felt sorry for her walking to greet people and seeming to have to take tiny steps. I don't get it. And the little bag is sweet but too little for a tallish woman. I really try not to be so negative but a fuller skirt, maybe a break in the print, no bag needed -- she would have felt more relaxed surely. She seems so "on her own."

  4. Don't get me wrong, I have loved everything from this tour, especially the Roland Mouret suit yesterday, but where are more American brands?!

It noticed it during the Caribbean tour, but it's really disappointing to see that she's stopped incorporating as many host country brands into her clothing choices and wears her go-to British designers instead. The rest of the year provides so many opportunities to highlight British fashion, these tours just seem like a great opportunity that's being missed. Previous tours had so many more moments and it was so fantastic to see (and made the cost less of a talking point).

How many more Alexander McQueen coats do we need to see? A similar coat could have easily been from The Row or Calvin Klein.

    1. She is not on a Royal Tour at the invitation of the U.S Government or at the request of the British Foreign Office. This is a personal trip for their own personal causes and so it’s not really necessary for her to showcase American brands.

    1. Are you are referring to a different short video than the two posted here because her stride seems normal in that first video. Perhaps her cautious posture is more a signal of feeling intimidated being in the presence of scholars and professors from Harvard University.

    2. Wow. I don’t see what you see. They are guests in a foreign country known for gun violence. I find them respectful, charming and professional and I’ll add brave. I’m an American and while watching all the events for the queen’s funeral I was struck by how safe it was to stand out side in big crowds for hours. I’m delighted they are here and think they look genuine in spite of harsh weather, and obviously heightened security efforts.

      Delete
    3. It looks like her dress being long and very fitted, with not much of a kick pleat at the bottom, is hampering her stride. Kate has a very long stride for a woman, almost equal to Williams. Other than the fact that she seems to be walking to accommodate the dress, she seems her usual, confident self to me. Everyone saying something is "off", I just don't see it. As someone very thoroughly summed up their first day, I'm sure by the time they arrived for the basketball game, they both would have been exhausted. Add to that, Kate is probably not that familiar with the game, no particular team to root for, and probably just waiting for the evening to end, I can understand her seeming lack of enthusiasm.

      Delete
    4. I completely agree that they are charming, respectful, professional, brave, and I'll add friendly, down to earth, and kind. And back to being brave -- there are the extremes of people taking plane trips to see them vs. the heckling crowd when Biden met William. That's America! Kate may indeed have felt intimated -- which is just a humble characteristic to be admired. And I finally got my houndstooth I had asked for earlier. I just want the bottom of the dress to be shorter and freer to allow some flexibility in walking. It just looked too long.

      Delete
    5. Anon @ 19:00 The funeral was safe because there were so many police and military personnel with guns. And even snipers were everywhere. I remember the news was talking about all the security during the funeral. Also, don't forget they even removed garbage cans for large events after the london bombing a few years ago. Let's not pretend London is always safe.

I was one of the one’s that was feeling something “off”, but it’s gone today! Today seems like usual ‘ol’ Will & Kate! :) So lovely to see Kate during her walkabout! She looks Stunning!!! They just loved & clearly appreciated her! The Boston broadcasters I was listening to, were commenting on how people just respond to Will & Kate’s genuinely warm & generous nature! Many commented on how dedicated they are to others & to genuinely important causes, & how people really respect & are drawn to them! XOXO

  6. There were comments yesterday about things seeming “off” and already a comment about Kate looking “stiff” today. My heart goes out for them with the things they are dealing with behind the scenes…the BP incident, the Netflix trailer release, still grieving their grandmother. They are doing a wonderful job of trying to stay engaged and focus on what they’re here for, but I can only imagine they have lots of emotions going on. Hopefully the awards ceremony tonight will be a very joyous occasion for them. Kate looks wonderful today!

    2. I agree as well. They have seemed kind and charming and happy to be in Boston. The weather os obviously very cold, which may make them a little more drawn to some. They are here on a business trip, not a tour, so the engagements, with the exception of the basketball game, are a bit more serious in tone, but they have seemed happy and relaxed to me. Security does seem more intense, but who knows what security issues there are. The videos of Catherine interacting with the crowds seem kind and open to me. I am very impressed with how active and engaged they have been—jet lag is a real thing, and they did not give themselves even a half day to adjust to the time change, they just jumped right in. I think it’s been a lovely few days.

    2. It may have been nice to see more repeats, but not an entire tour of repeats. This is the first visit as Prince and Princess of Wales and both William and Kate are giving importance and paying the proper respect to their host country by dressing appropriately. I believe that in keeping with the theme of Earthshot and sustainability, both William and Kate will wear repeats to the evening event, and they will be poised and well put together. I agree with a poster above, I hope that the ceremony will be full of joy for them and all the participants.

  9. A lovely dress which unfortunately is cut exactly like the unflattering green tartan Burberry dress -- hem too low and basically a shapeless column. Kate is a gorgeous and has an enviably gorgeous figure, but I think that dresses like these reduce her silhouette to an elongated stick-figure. Waist up, it is fabulous. Waist down, it achieves the unimaginable -- it actually makes gorgeous Kate's figure unattractive. While it emphasizes how slim the princess is, these dresses do nothing for her!

Remember how she used to wear those slim sheath dresses! Those were the days. I think they looked great on her because of their shorter hemlines and how they showcased her great legs. But in a long midi or maxi length, a column dress is v-e-r-y very long on her, due to her height. I think longer dresses flatter her figure better when the designers add shape through volume in the skirt, through peplums, through movement in fabrics, through the use of flounces to break up the waist-to-hem distance, and even (in her wedding gown) through the use of a bustle.

I'd love to see this pretty Emilia Wickstead dress re-imagined to add shape. Keep the top and add a solid black circle skirt with fullness and movement. Just one person's opinion.

    1. I agree with you about the cut of these outfits. Catherine maintains a fit, slim figure that is enviable but not necessarily “gorgeous” when she dresses like a string bean. She’s definitely decided to hide her legs as Queen in training but these very columnar looks are severe. There’s got to be a middle way between these and the prim 1960s wife dresses she loves. Although I’m beginning to think those shirtwaists are the more flattering look, but I can see why they wouldn’t do for cold, windy Boston.

One thing that is especially heart wrenching is to see the effect that the COVID lockdowns had on the now-first graders. I am going to look up the Center and see if there is research yet about it; I can certainly see that our first graders here in our small city are lagging behind, struggling to understand "school" behavior, things that I would normally have seen in kindergarten. 23. I like this dress but I do hope that the fabric has some stretch. I too feel it's maybe 2 inches long but the tailoring and trimming is beautiful. Tonight, I have a few thoughts on what she might wear. My first choice would be the green lace Temperley. I think she's only worn it once. Or if green is her color tonight, she could opt for the McQueen gown she wore at the BBC Sports Awards. But she looks great in ivory - and the McQueen gown from the BAFTAs would be beautiful or the simpler Self Portrait she wore to a premiere. OR what if she choose one of the gowns from her recent 40th Birthday photo shoot? What ever she chooses she'll look lovely.

Thank you for the clips and glimpses into this engagement! I haven’t seen recent photos of Ambassador Caroline’s adult children in a while. Her daughter resembles her great-grandmother Rose. I’m very impressed with Harvard’s program for early childhood . Harvard is the oldest university in the US established in 1636 and chartered in 1650.

  27. I had totally forgotten this, until I saw William & Caroline Kennedy walking together…. but as some of you may know/remember, The Kennedy’s also have their own UK History. JFK’s father, Joseph Kennedy, was the US Ambassador to the UK! The whole family lived their for a time & a few of the daughters even participated in a London “Season”, being presented to The King! In fact JFK’s sister married into the aristocracy & would have eventually have been The Duchess of Devonshire, had her husband not died in WWII. In fact she is buried over in England at Chatsworth House.

  28. A pleasure to see Ambassador Kennedy, who was very much a part of my childhood as I observed her own childhood in the White House with avid interest. She and I are about the same age. Her daughters (the other is Rose, named for the Ambassador's grandmother, Rose Kennedy) have a look of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, while her son is an interesting combination of his mother's genes and his father's. There's been much curiosity about whether one or more of them might enter politics. Tatiana is a journalist, I believe.

The Kennedy family as a whole has a history of serious support for environmental-protection projects.

Now, this dress worn to Harvard epitomizes my mixed feelings about Emilia Wickstead. I love the houndstooth fabric, and I am normally a great fan of a long, lean, sheath-style dress, but this dress is so long and so closely-fitted that it actually doesn't look like it makes for easy walking. I think a shorter length and slightly greater give in the skirt would have been advisable. As I've said before, Wickstead's designs often present fit problems, whether they are bespoke items or ready-to-wear.

The pale blue bag just didn't work for December. It's a spring/summer item, regardless of the fact that the houndstooth fabric is blue and black. It doesn't work at all well with the shoes.

People who like this design might take a look at The Fold, which offers beautiful dresses in interesting fabrics that are quite polished -- and perfect for professional wear. Some of their items are in houndstooth, and they are less expensive than anything Emilia Wickstead makes -- though not cheap. The Princess has worn at least one Fold dress.

  34. This Houndstooth Dress and the Burberry Tartan Dress are my favourites out of this tour, probably the tartan a favourite day dress till now. Some of the comments here about her being off and her dresses bring too long columnar are like a refrain. She likes what her fashion advisers suggested and probably didn't want the same knee length look. Some of the North America n commentators seem too critical and personal about Kate and her fashion. I like that Kate does her twee princessy thing and what ever new trend catches her eye. I remember the commentators over here hating the hair band thing that Kate started wearing but Kate was right on mark about that. Later, it started appearing on most of the fashionistas inthe UK Hate scene. She seems off because it's too chilly in Boston and she is not bundled up like Sandringham Christmas walk. And the fashion is probably more of a clash of USA vs British aesthetics.

    1. I agree Krishna! I think the North American comments these past few days are particularly critical and it could be a clash of USA vs. British. The Burberry Tartan and the Houndstooth Dress are my favorites as well, I think they are great fashionable day looks. We are seeing an extension of her sheath dresses in a very fashion forward style and her long, lithe frame carries it well. She has her own sense of style, likes, and choices and think she does a fantastic job of being appropriate, elegant, and chic for all occasions. Can't wait for her Christmas special!

If you do not wish to use the sign in options, simply select the "Name/URL" option on the drop down menu and insert your name, and if you wish the country/state you're from. You can leave the URL blank.

If there are a large number of comments, it is necessary to click the 'Load More' button at the end of the comments section to see the latest additions.
