The Princess Reworks Sweeping McQueen Gown for Second BAFTA Wear

For the most glittering evening on the British entertainment calendar, the Prince and Princess of Wales walked the red carpet for the 2023 EE Bafta Awards at London's Royal Festival Hall.

It marks a return to the awards for the couple who last attended in 2020. Prince William has been President of the Academy since 2010, and over the years, both he and the Princess have supported BAFTA’s charitable activities by attending events across the charity’s learning programme, including Young Game Designers and BAFTA Kids events, as well as others related to building cross-cultural collaborations with the creative industries in China. Most recently, Kate held her 'Shaping Us' pre-launch at BAFTA's London premises.

The Waleses took the past week off from engagements coinciding with George, Charlotte and Louis' half-term break from Lambrook. It's not known how they spent the week -- but possibly a few days skiing in one of their favourite haunts or a quiet week in the country at their Norfolk property Anmer Hall. Hello! reports that before the family began their break, William and Kate took the children to Buttersteep Rise in Ascot for a "low-key visit" to watch scenes being filmed for The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. It's understood they met members of the cast.

Kensington Palace said: "The EE BAFTA Film Awards are an annual celebration of the extraordinary skills, talent and craft of the film industry. For the first time, this year’s Awards will culminate in a live broadcast of the final four categories, enabling audiences to experience the nominee and winners’ reactions in real-time." A spokesperson added: "BAFTA is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. BAFTA is committed to identifying talented individuals and making sure they receive professional support and advice that will enable them to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances. The charity delivers a year-round international programme of learning events and initiatives, including scholarships and mentoring programmes."

Tonight's impressive list of attendees included Cate Blanchett, Austin Butler, Viola Davis, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Carey Mulligan, Michelle Yeoh, Lily James, Emma Thompson, Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis,  Ana DeArmas, Kerry Condon, Jamie Dornan, Nicola Coughlan, Elie Goulding, Geri Halliwell, Brendan Fraser and Barry Keoghan to name but a few. Take a look at all the red carpet action below.

A look at the nominees for Outstanding British Film.

The BAFTA award trophy is a mask designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe. When the Guild merged with the British Film Academy to become the Society of Film and Television Arts, later the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the first 'BAFTA award' was presented to Sir Charles Chaplin on his Academy Fellowship that year.

In 2016, Kate selected a bespoke Alexander McQueen gown with a floral print and tiered skirt. In 2019, it was bespoke dark green Jenny Packham with show-stopping emeralds. Last year, Kate wore a stunning one-shoulder McQueen design. In 2020, we saw the return of Kate's bespoke McQueen white and gold embroidered gown, first worn in Malaysia in 2012, and adorned with the country's national flower, the hibiscus.

One might say Kate took a closer look at her BAFTA gowns recently and selected the white Grecian Alexander McQueen style worn in 2019 to make another appearance at the glamorous affair.

As you can see, the gown has been reworked with the statement floral shoulder appliquƩ detail removed...

...in favour of a flowing sash which the Princess debuted tonight.

At first the gown wasn't immediately recognisable to me due to the change in accessories. In 2019, Kate opted for an elaborate updo, Princess Diana's gorgeous diamond and pearl earrings, glittering Jimmy Choo Romy pumps and the Queen's Quatrefoil bracelet.

For this evening's look, it was fascinating to see the gown styled completely differently. With sleek straight hair, the Princess chose a pair of statement ZARA earrings (with thanks to UFO No More).

The Cascading Floral Earrings (shown on the US site for $39) are described as: "Floral-shaped metal dangle earrings with rhinestone appliquƩ."

The addition of long black opera gloves marked a notable sartorial point for Kate. We don't tend to see the Princess opting for evening gloves for black-tie events. Middleton Maven suggests they could be the velvet Cornelia James 'Melissa' style.

The Princess carried her black velvet Jimmy Choo Celeste clutch.

And wore a pair of gold pumps.

  1. Unfortunately, the look is a miss for me. Though, I am in favor of the long sash addition, the black gloves and clutch are too heavy for the light, ethereal gown. The earrings are fine for daywear, but at this event I expect high end jewelry, so I am disappointed which is rare for me with Kate's outfits. Maybe she will wear it again paired with long white, opera gloves. I think that would be a winner. I also preferred the updo when she wore this dress in 2019.

    1. I think this would have worked with either a smaller, higher end earring or no gloves. Not both.

    2. I agree. Just not a good look. I've been watching Downton Abbey and those 1920 styles nailed it with opera gloves. If she had chosen a sophisticated sleek style, the gloves would have been fine. But this gown looks more like a Disney Princess. And I think the earrings are a bit much and quite tacky. Again if she had opted for an overall 1920's look, it would have been very classy.

    3. Absolutely, this looks totally weird. Like she mixed two outfits

      Delete
    4. Yes, Kate normally nails it. Now I think they were going for the matching outfit thing, which is great, but maybe Kate should have worn white gloves or no gloves with a black belt or shash on her dress. She is beautiful no matter.

    1. Exactly. But William looks smart in a velvet tux.

  3. At first, I didn't like the gloves at all. But they're growing on me, I have to say. Any chance the gloves were a styling suggestion from the designer Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen?

  4. Nice to see a return to this event for William and Kate. Now that I've seen several pictures, my impression now isn't as strongly negative as my initial impression, but I still don't think the gloves work with the dress and the overall look.

  5. This is not a miss for me, but not a hit either. Taken separately, I love the accessories - gloves, earrings, clutch, and I think her makeup is gorgeous here. I just think the shoulder detail is a little fussy and the neckline is wrong for gloves that long. Other than that...she looks lovely and it's nice to see them.

Something I'm curious about...I know everyone initially said that this was a repeat of the McQueen but as the hours have passed, it's seems like people are saying this is a new dress by Jenny Packham? I'd love to know where people are with the repeat versus new dress thought?

If it is a new dress, why would Kate purchase a new dress extremely similar to one she already has?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Kate looks beautiful but there is something not quite right with this outfit. i think the earrings and the gloves needed a more sophisticated dress, maybe a straight shift rather than the floaty style. i preferred the dress in its first wearing.

    ReplyDelete
  7. This should be dramatic but it ends up being a rather blah. I think the flowingsoftness of dress silhouette, instead of offering a contrast, just can't carry the dramatic edginess of the black gloves.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I would have loved those gloves with a black gown but they are completely wrong with the flowers white dress. Major miss for me. But the re-wear was a good idea.

    1. That was supposed to say 'the flowy white dress'. I wrote my comment before any comments were published so came back to see what everybody else thought. Let's just say I wasn't surprised. Still, I'm looking forward to her next appearance. Let's hope we don't have a long wait.

  9. I like this reworking of the gown better- which is surprising because it was pretty perfect initially! The gloves are a surprise element but they’ve really grown on me! The only thing I’d change is wearing diamond earrings (the Queen’s Grenville diamonds) and then her silver sparkly shoe (any pair). Always cool to see a redone dress. They look great together! William’s tux is elegant. Thanks Charlotte! Sue from IL

    1. Sue, which Grenville earrings. I'd be thinking the chandelier but the other ones that we know of would of looked good as well. S. šŸ™‚.

    2. The dramatic long chandelier pair with lots of diamonds in different shapes! :)

    3. Yes those ones. šŸ‘. The shapes are every available cut of diamond that you could get when they were made. S.šŸ™‚.

  10. I love the edgy style in general. I'm happy about the experimenting, the gown. The gloves and the earrings by themselves, but still, after looking at many photos, I'm sure if I love them all together. Perhaps the earrings in black would have completed the look better.

    1. I agree that it's good that she is experimenting and taking some risks, even if this look doesn't totally come together. Also agree that black gloves would have been better with a black, or darker, dress. I was always intrigued when the late Queen wore black gloves. Also not that excited about the cheapo earrings, but there is something sort of 80s/ Diana about this look for me. Di liked to look dramatic, and it didn't always work. This has the same feel to me.

      Delete
    2. Have to agree with all you said. I thought of Diana as well.... when she got it wrong. While setting trends. S.šŸ™‚.

  11. I love the reworking of one of my favourite gowns; but the black heavy looking gloves don't go with the frothy white dress. And why such cheap earrings? I'm afraid this is a fail for me, lovely as the gown itself is.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Unfortunately, the chandelier earrings, black opera gloves and center part once again revisited collectively leave me not knowing which to look at first. This is a serious miss for me.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not sure if I'm a fan of the black evening gloves with this particular dress. Perhaps it's the one shoulder with the high gloves, or the more formal velvet material with the soft Grecian design of the dress. Personally, I would have loved the black to tie into the dress a little better, or for the material to be a darker color.

I applaud the reworking though, and the subtle nod to the dress's former appliquƩ with the earring design. All in all, it's always exciting with the Princess takes new fashion risks, and I'd rather a few misses than for her to be stuck in the same "uniform".

    1. I was just thinking the same thing. People often complain that she wears the same things or buys them in multiple colors. Well she took a risk. Good for her! It got people talking! :)

  14. Undecided on the new shoulder detail but I thought she needed gloves on the first wearing; bound to like the dramatic black gloves then. A plainer gown might work better. It’s a nice departure from stodge and fun to see her push those boundaries.

  16. I do not care for the gloves. I don't enjoy what seems to be a fashion statement with gloves the last few years. I find them distracting and not a positive accessory. Catherine looks lovely, but I do not think her earrings and gloves enhance this look. GA

I am a longtime fan of figure skating. The women have been wearing gloves with their costumes the last few years.

  17. This is the first time I've commented, thank you for having me. I liked the original white McQueen gown and the overall look of its debut at a previous Baftas ceremony. I did wonder if that dress was a duplicate design to the pink one shouldered gown Kate wore to the King's 70th birthday, if not his birthday, it was another dazzling event, with only a couple of photos available snapped whilst in the car. The appliquƩ on the shoulder of the pink gown looks terribly similar to the original design of the white dress. Moving onto tonight, I wondered if Kate may have re-worn the black and white gown she wore to the Top Gun premier or the green dress she hired for the Earth Shot ceremony. Still tonight's look didn't grab me. I like the new look shoulder, but debuting a new look of evening gloves almost took the attention away from that, plus the flowing shoulder seemed lost with the gloves making the dress look busy. Kate debuted new earrings tonight inkeeping with her love of more unusual designs. Again whilst I liked each element of tonight's look, it all seemed too busy. Don't get me wrong, I love many of Kate's fashion choices, although tonight left me feeling a little underwhelmed. Maybe if she had worn her hair in an up-do, the neckline and new look shoulder design may have been more defined. Kate does amazing work and regardless of my opinion on tonight's look, she was happy with her look and that's what counts! Annabel

    1. Good jewellery.šŸ˜‚. Yes most people have the few good bits for special occasions. The Princess of Wales has a good collection herself, as well I'd hope now having access to the late Princess of Wales jewellery held by the Crown. She also has access to the royal jewellery collection, probably one of the largest in the world. This jewellery should be worn and seen. Example the Grenville tiara hadn't been seen or worn in over 80 years. The new to her emerald necklace that the late Queen wore. It's meant to be the second Grenville emerald necklace. Then you have all the jewellery left to the late Queen by her Grandmother Queen Mary that has never been worn. The Dutch royal family use and share their jewellery very well. S.šŸ™‚.

      Delete
    2. šŸ‘. I've read report's that the late Queen's personal jewellery collection is worth 80-100 million. Her 28ct pink diamond is probably worth 45 million plus. The 170ct of flawless diamond's being added to the new Queen's crown. That's just 4 brooches. S.šŸ™‚.

      Delete
    3. Agreed completely - I love that occasionally she wears affordable jewelry, but some decent jewels would have gone a long way to saving this look. And what is more sustainable than jewels that have been in the family for generations (compared to mass market, fast fashion earrings)?!

  20. Oh goodness…I love each piece, but not all together. I love gloves, and would love to see them with a more sleek type gown. My eyes don’t know where to look…gloves, gown, earrings? A little too busy for me. My thought is if there are gloves, hair is up. Like how Julia Roberts wore her hair in the opera scene in the movie Pretty Woman. Sorry, this was a big miss for me. I did like Kate’s makeup though. Very pretty. Thanks Charlotte!!

  21. I'm glad I'm not the only one unsure of the total look. I love the earrings -- they would look great with a simple symmetric rose gown. They don't seem to go with the gown with the elaborate shoulder work. And the black gloves are dramatic but not appropriate for the ethereal gown. She has so many beautiful gowns to choose from -- I wish she had not chosen this recent one.

  22. Sadly, the black gloves ruin the whole look for me. Too bad, because I do like the modifications that were made to the gown.

  24. I like the new shoulder detail on the dress. I didn’t really like the flowers last time. But the earrings are too bohemian for the formal gown, in my opinion. So happy to see her at a formal event!

  25. Sadly, I’m with everyone else on her fashion choices for this event. This is a rare misstep for me. If she had reworn the black & white column gown from the Tom Cruise premiere with the opera gloves - that would have worked. This beautiful gown is too floaty & ethereal for the heavy gloves. The stunning earrings needed and up do, and just seemed to clash with the look. For me, they are more day wear, than night and not with such a soft dress. I’ll put this look with the floral Erdem. Her beautiful smile & makeup were radiant, and the gorgeous little tap on William’s bottom was ever so cute & spontaneous. Everyone makes fashion mistakes, tonight was one of them. šŸ’•šŸ’•

  26. Clothes are something I used to be good at. I tend to be on the conservative side fashion wise, and I would.not have put this outfit together. Why? The dress is quite nice, not my style, but its a good dress. It says grecian goddess to me, so I see upswept hair, not down and straight. Nothing too formal, but upswept hair, ir something pulled back loosely with tjin ribbon or domething through it. And the gloves do not work at all with grecian goddess. They scream glamorous and sort of give a mid 20th century vibe to me. They don't work with a floaty dress. I'd have gone with bracelets or even an upper arm bracelet or cuff. I personally don't care for the earrings but I can see them working with this with different hair. And shoes? Something strappy and sandally to go with the grecian theme.

  27. The Princess is a naturally beautiful woman. She always looks great. I can't believe I'm saying this but not a wow from me tonight. This is WRONG. Those gloves and earrings, no need for me to comment on those because everyone else has. Large pearl or diamond earrings, no gloves and I think she would look fantastic. Someone suggested the Grenville earrings. I was hoping to see her wearing something from the late Queen as well tonight. I have been wondering what jewellery the late Queen set aside for her or King Charles will gift to her. I had very high hopes for the Princess to wear some of the late Queen's jewellery at the Coronation or jewels that haven't been seen in years. It will be interesting because I think the focus will have to be on the new King and Queen. I just looked at a picture of the Princess at the last state visit. Gloves forgotten about. S.šŸ™‚.

  28. This is a messy miss. The gloves don't go with the dress. The shoulder detail looks like a dish cloth. The earrings clash with the look, as they are too obviously paste and not in harmony with anything. The hair is wrong. It's kind of like someone was playing at dress-up from their mother's fancy dress cupboard. Oh my! On a positive note, Prince William looked smart.

  31. Great. Fantastic there's a repeat of gown in these straightened times in the UK. Love the bold, statement earrings, too, beautiful design. But I don't think the black opera gloves work at all, the colour jars (She may have got the idea from Diana).

  38. The Prince & Princess of Wales are so regal & so royal, but at the same time, so genuine & authentic. The juxtaposition of the reworked-gown, with the high street earrings, strikes the perfect robe for an award ceremony being held in the current economic climate! The Opera-length gloves, in a contrasting color, are the perfect finishing-touch to stand out as the future monarch and his wife!

  39. I feel like all the accessories were planned with a different dress in mind. The fact that this is a rewear of a dress she already wore to the baftas only convinces me further. 45. This is one of the worst ensembles Kate has ever worn. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw the pictures of the event. None of these elements work together; it’s a mish-mashed hot mess. The dress on its own is lovely though why wear the same dress to the same event when Kate has so many other gorgeous gowns available in her closet? I’m wondering if the gloves were an effort to tie in with William’s tuxedo? Nevertheless, their smiles and ease with each other is always a treat to see…a truly wonderful couple! I hope the PoW doesn’t hear a lot of negative feedback on her outfit because the general consensus seems to be that we loved her taking a risk and mixing it up. I think we're going to see some interesting things/choices from them, as they find themselves entering this new phase of their evolution! I'm definitely here for it! :) xoxo

  51. Oh my, I can’t think of another time where she’s been so Off in a Formal Evening outfit.

I loved, loved that dress on the first wearing. I can’t imagine why she had it re-done. Maybe if she had simplified it by removing the floral detail, it would’ve made sense, but adding that complicated arm train is a giant miss for me.

As others have said, the heavy black gloves are not a match for this floaty white dress. I’m not sure I like them at all, but maybe they’d work with a velvet column dress in a dark shade like hunter green or burgundy.

As with the gloves, I don’t care for the earrings at all, but I especially think they’re a poor choice with the dress.

She’s awesome and so lovely, but this whole look is terrible. Hopefully she had some fun being edgy, and we shan’t see a repeat of this funky styling.

  52. I like the dress, again, but I think the styling is not right. It is just too much. Statement dress with statetement gloves, statetement earrings amd statetement shoes šŸ™„ One statement out and it would be better

  53. I love this look so much, all of it. We always ask for different and here she gives it to us and we complain. This is a quirky which Kate has never been, I love the black gloves, personally better than white, the gloves are the focus the dress is just an afterthought. I don’t have the correct wording but she is leading us to step out of the norm, get creative and unique, frankly she has become quite uniform lately. My only improvement would have been some really sexy earrings. A very mod sleek diamond drop earring and I would’ve brought back the Roland Mouret dress from years ago that was white and body hugging with these gloves needed a sexy tight fitting dress.

  54. Kate always looks beautiful! Unfortunately, the ensemble is a miss for me. I absolutely love the dress, but the velvet gloves and clutch are way to “heavy” with the dress. The earrings…..a big no from me. I loved her look from 2019 and I love how the dress was remade for tonight. Everything put together tonight was just off. I feel her first BAFTA Awards at the Princess of Wales she should have had a show-stopping look.

  55. I’m not in the hate it camp but I’m not in the love it one either. I love the rework in the dress and I actually do love the earrings - the gloves are a huge NO for me. The gloves and clutch just feel so heavy against the soft flowy style of the dress. It doesn’t see her style to me so I wonder if it was a suggestion from the design house when they did the rework on the shoulder?

I like that she’s taking risks and trying new things. Her style continues to evolve and I’m here for it. You don’t know unless you try.

This was a miss for me. I’m all for recycling, but when something this memorable is worn to the same event, especially such a big event, even if the dress is reworked, it’s just a miss. I also feel the earrings were gaudy. I think the Princess sometimes misses an opportunity to wear something from the Queen’s vault. If you’re going to re-wear a dress like that, dig out the diamonds baby! Think how gorgeous that dress would have been with some really big, dangly diamonds! In other news, Prince William is looking dapper!! So happy to see him not wearing BLUE.

  57. With all the jewels available to Kate in the many vaults, I don't understand this pair with this dress at all. In fact, could she possibly wear all the earrings available to her in her lifetime? Then why these with this dress...and the gloves. A no from me.

  58. You know, the outfit looks like Charlotte helped Catherine put it together, and I don't hate it. It's fun that she experimented. Sure, it didn't work. But Catherine walked in with the best accessories of them all - confidence and a big smile. Have you seen the footage of them arriving?!?! It's like they're on a date night. Positively beaming. She looks brilliant because of that.

Catherine looks like she doesn't give a care in the world what we think as she's there to support the artists and she's wearing an outfit that is re-cycled and cost effective when many are feeling the economic pinch. Good on her!

  59. I agree a complete miss for me the dress was great as it was . The modification would be good too . The gloves look so strange and don’t work with the dress . The earrings are just tacky and such a strange colour to go with black and white . Updo and diamond earrings with the dress . The black gloves would possibly work with the black and white column dress she wore for Maverick

  60. Thank you Charlotte for the post.

The first picture I saw was the couple walking in together and thought how well their look tonight complemented each other - black with white and white with black. They look so much in tune with each other and their new roles. Together it was quite the appearance for them both and maybe that was the intention.
    What was there to like:-
In this year of hardship everything Catherine wore was a repeat except for the gloves
    William's tux
Earings that are affordable for many . Not the year to swank with jewels from the vaults. There will be many more opportunities
Catherine's hair styled to flow back to complement the flow of the shoulder fabric
Love long gloves so that was a hit for me. Hope we see more gloves. Just saw a photo of Diana with one long red and one long black glove. Looked good
Both impeccably groomed ? Rocking James Bond
And Helen Mirren speech - outstanding.

Of course every look can be savaged, but this year the look more than fitted the brief. Lots of the stars were in rewears and it seemed less jewels to me

  63. Blank gloves with floaty dress a big no. Gloves are far too long and in some photos it makes her look like she tried to to be black. As for William’s velvet tux, it just makes me think Austin Powers. Change those boring blue suits not the classic black tux

  64. Oh, dear. This was really an interesting experiment gone wrong. I am normally a fan of black evening gloves and own a couple of pairs, but they wouldn't work with a floaty, ethereal, white dress. Moreover, you have to be careful of length. Full-on opera-length gloves like these should be worn with a sleeveless or strapless dress; unfortunately, the way the flowing shoulder detail on this dress covers the top of the Princess's left arm means that the top of the glove disappears beneath it. That results in a very odd look. If the Princess really wanted to wear evening gloves, she should have chosen an elbow-length pair, preferably in white or cream, though shorter gloves in black might have worked better than these opera-length gloves did.

I also think that this dress calls for an updo, to show off the one-shoulder design and the shoulder detail. My personal jury is still out on the earrings. I like a good statement chandelier earring for evening, but these may be a little too long, a little too much in general. In fact, between the earrings, the gloves, the long hair, and the shoulder detail of the dress, there's a lot going on in this look. I think perhaps a little restraint was in order.

That said, I wanted to thank those who expressed their condolences when I told everyone that my mother had just died. It meant a great deal that people who did not even really know me or my family wrote such kind words. This is one comments section where the participants really do behave like mature and decent adults, and I appreciate that. 7. I too am a fan of black evening gloves - I'm glad she wore them, just wish that someone had styled them with a different dress. I agree a sleeveless or strapless dress is best. And I can figure out why McQueen would have put such a large, oversized adornment. I could see a simple black blow that drapes over each side tastefully. Or no shoulder adornment and a simple velvet sash.

With so many beautiful gems to choose from not sure why to go trendy with a Zara earring. I could have seen her wear those earrings with the green rental dress in Boston.

And the gold shoes seemed odd as well IMHO. Of course they might go with the earrings, or the trim on the clutch? Black strappy sandals would have been airy and light - albeit black - with that cream grecian gown.

Vittoria, I had not seen your comment about the passing of your mother. My condolences. I lost my sister 6 months ago while we were hiking together and have never experienced such a devastating loss. I realize now that I'll never be the same person. Like Dee, time has not helped. When "that person" that is YOUR person is gone one simply grieves over the loss. May we all find peace and embrace each day regardless if it's joyful or one filled with sorrow. Warmly, Elle in CA

  66. Like many others here, I'm not a fan of this look, BUT props to her for stepping out of her comfort zone and experimenting instead of relying on the tried-and-true. I think that recycling an earlier gown and wearing High Street earrings is a terrific move in this economy. I know there are readers who wanted to see her dive into the vault (and don't get me wrong, I like seeing her in those spectacular jewels, too), but this seems like a calibrated, smart decision given that so many people in Britain are struggling to afford the basics.

  69. From a strictly fashion perspective, I agree that the black&white column dress worn for the Maverick film would have worked better with the gloves. But from a fashion-diplomacy perspective, I think it would have been inappropriate to wear a gown that is already associated with a film (especially with an American film) at an awards program celebrating British film.

I think Kate's look was actually a brilliant one for the moment we are in. Her controversial accessories made a recycled gown draw a LOT of attention, without having over-the-top expenditure at a time of national financial distress. So it succeeded. It got us talking about her look, even though most of us consider it to be a rare 'miss' for fashion.

  71. I'm definitely repeating what many others have said in that I'm not a fan of the gloves combined with this dress. The heavy black velvet just doesn't mix well with the floaty white dress in my opinion. I do love that she's reworking an old gown and getting a second wear out of it. I don't mind the earrings actually, they're clearly not "real" / expensive but I don't always need the million-dollar diamonds. I'm thinking if she'd just switched the black velvet gloves for a nice nude silk pair I could really get behind this??

    ReplyDelete
  72. This looks like the outfits got thrown together last minute. Not a cohesive outfit. It may be better with no glove at all and a gold clutch. Seems like she’s the yong to match the black and white tuxedo of William or something. The earrings look too heavy for the outfit as well. I’m just not into this one. I think the whole thing is a total miss.

    ReplyDelete
  73. This look is also a miss for me. Yet when I saw the photos of the event from 2019 and this one side by side I definitely think the 2019 version was “old” K, very princessy.

The new version is an attempt to modernize which I like except for the ugly earrings. Having said that I don’t agree K should bring out the diamonds, they also can appear quite ostentatious and a throwback to the Queens time of wearing enormous jewelry with fur capes and yes, evening gloves.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Would be better without the gloves and the black clutch. There’s nothing cohesive about this whole outfit. Seems like she’s trying to match Willaim’s tuxedo of black and white. The earrings look too “heavy” for the outfit and the clutch is probably better with a gold one to match shoes. This one is a miss for me. It looks like it’s all thrown together last minute.

  75. Catherine always looks beautiful, but I did love the dress in its original design. This is beautiful, as well, but I loved her hair up and the softness of the first time wear. I think maybe she was going for an edgy look this time with the gloves and the earrings - because it was BAFTA?? Either way - she is always beautiful. And, I do love the earrings.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Oh no! This is a miss I love the modification to the dress but the black gloves and center part hairstyle ruin this ethereal dress.

    ReplyDelete
  77. It seems to me that those who gave this outfit a thumbs down are judging it by standards of the past -- no black gloves with white gown, only wear full-length opera gloves with a column dress or strapless dress, hair up, no heavy velvet with floaty gown, only jewels that are impossibly out of reach to any other wearer, even other million/billionaires, because jewelry from the "vault" is, uniquely, from the royal collection. But if you are the Princess of Wales (all the way back to Princess Alex in the 19th century) you are a trend-setter, not a trend-follower, a fashion "rule" inventor, not a rule keeper. Now that she has worn these pieces to a major cultural event, everything she put together here is "acceptable." A modern take on some old looks, referencing but not being bound by them. If old rules weren't broken, bent, reconfigured, rebelled against, rethought and rejected, we'd all still be wearing bustles. Just doing the job she was "hired" to do when she married William, as she seems faithfully, consistently to do in every other part of her job description. Plus, she looked awfully happy and they looked happy together, as they went about it.

    1. I am with you on this one Anon 18:05. I think, and have always thought this, Kate doesn't dress for us....she dresses for herself. While at first, it was completely unexpected and wasn't quite sure what I thought, but in retrospect it is a bold fashion statement and she is clearly comfortable with it! I think Kate is somewhat nonplussed with the critics of her clothing and dressing, but here she did a reworked, rewear of a gown, and took a risk with her dramatic accessories! Glad to see her supporting the British fashion industry, especially with her daring earrings. She has her own sense of style and I quite admire her for it! Also, you are 100% right, she looked awfully happy together with William, they are a matched set!! BTW William took a step outside of the box himself with his velvet jacket and his black shoes, he cut quite the figure, in fact he took the show last night; but I think Kate was just fine with that because at the end of the night they have each other and that's the real prize!

    2. I actually know very little about "fashion" -- I just like to see what looks pretty to me. Kate has worn what I consider to be very attractive clothes, usually not edgy. I thought I would like this outfit, without caring about the fashion aspect. But it just looked worse and worse -- the gloves look like black arms peeking through the filmy white dress. I adore the earrings but can imagine them above a strapless rose or peach linen gown -- just because I think it would be pretty. Taking risks does not always work out well, which is why it's a risk. :)

  79. All the pieces individually are fine. I very much don't like this all put together. And we all can have on opinion on this. The dress - personally, I prefer the initial version. But this version is okay, different, without killing the flow of the initial dress, which I loved. (I do think it is odd that she rewore the dress to the same event. Sort of like QMII of Denmark, wearing the same dress to the new year's audiences, year after year. I mean, I check my christmas pictures so that I don't wear the same dress, year after year....)

Gloves - sort of fun to see her in gloves. I like the glamour aspect of them. Now, I personally think that white gloves would have been better with this dress. Or alternatively, black would be fine with me if the dress had some black. Or if the jewelry was black. Something ...

Earrings - I don't think that they work with this dress at all. Maybe for a dress that is edgier.

People keep saying that she now has access to the BRF vaults. I think that is a gross overstatement of the situation. QEII was fairly tight with the loans - seems that Kate got to wear some things, but then promptly returned them, with the exception of a few pairs of earrings. We have no idea what of QEII's collection (alot of which was personally owned) was left to others. And for things left to the crown by QEII or prior monarchs - those would be Camilla's to wear at this point. And we just don't have any idea what sort of loans KCIII will be making/allowing from the vaults. While I'd love to see the BRF move to more of a Dutch Royal Family model with the jewelry sharing, I just don't see that happening. Or at least, there hasn't been much indication of that to this point. We can continue to dream.

Hair - I personally like hair up and dislike center parts. But it looks okay.

    1. Yes indeed the late Queen was a very wise Lady. Who kept a tight hold of her jewellery collection. Compared to everyone else she was very generous with the now Princess of Wales, far more than anyone else in her family, including all her daughter in law's. I would imagine everything we have seen the Princess wear has been set aside for her. I would be very surprised if the late Queen hadn't set aside jewellery for the Princess before she died. If she left very expensive jewels to her family there would be tax implications. That is why the personal jewellery collection passes from Monarch to Monarch. Just like it did with the Queen Mother. The new Queen was giving some beautiful pieces from her collection. The King and his daughter in law are very close. No doubt he will look after her very well. As the Princess of Wales she 100% has the right to access and wear all jewellery worn by former Princess of Wales held by the Crown in right of The Princess of Wales. Example, when she wore the Prince of Wales brooch. Previous worn by her step mother in law and late mother in law. Princess Diana had a huge collection gifted to her. My hope is that the King or Queen set aside a nice collection for Countess Sophie. I'm looking forward to seeing what jewellery is worn and by whom at the Coronation. Time will tell. S.šŸ™‚.

    2. I get the sense that Kate isn’t really into the Big Bling so maybe never made it a point to ask for lot of loaners.

She wore a ruby earring and necklace set to one of those State dinners. I forget who was being honored but she paired it with a mauve lace gown. I thought she looked overwhelmed by the jewelry, like it just weighed her down. In photos from the evening, she looked uncomfortable.

I seem to recall seeing her in a very substantial emerald and diamond set -maybe while she was in New York? - that was described as being a wedding gift. But we’ve only seen it that one time. So, again, I’m defaulting to an assumption that she’s just not interested in being decked out with the big sparkles.

I think there were a few pieces of the late Queen’s that she really liked - those chandelier earrings and a couple of diamond cuff bracelets- and asked for again and again, but otherwise didn’t care too much about the stuff on the vault.

      That’s my theory anyway.

  85. The fashion magazine blogs all include Catherine in best looks for the BAFTA event. Town & Country talked about her leaning into the opera length glove look and included a link to a recent Oscar event with at least 5 actresses rocking the same length glove. So whether or not it is 'your' cup of tea, she IS on trend with what she wore. I, personally, would have liked to see a different color earring, the rose is too bland against the black and white for my taste (it's also not a color I would wear so there's that too). But she looked confident and elegant and like she was having a great time with William.

  88. Hi
An ethereal white gown is a miss when paired with the heaviness and obtrusiveness of black opera gloves, which would be more suitable for a black or dark gown of a weightier fabric. She almost looks as if she is wearing sweater sleeves to stay warm! The earrings do not work for this important gown; it’s almost as if someone decided to add a clunky budget pair simply to shout « the common touch”! And gold shoes on top of all this is just too busy. It’s like a smorgasbord of political and branding decisions to appear modern and approachable (is this the first-ever hand holding at an official evening event?) rather than an aesthetic choice.

  89. Anyone taking into consideration that white is not her colour? In the photos I see, it drains her skin and she looks pale. Nonetheless, I like the sash and am fine with the gloves, but IMO, it doesn’t balance out either in itself, or with Prince Williams tux. Hair up (even half up) and real jewelry would have helped create a dramatic effect.
That said, I love watching her and reading here. Thanks for the reporting on background and issues involved in the appearances.

  90. I feel that there are two separate looks going on here: hair, gloves and clutch vs dress, shoes and earrings. Put together they clash, separately, they are beautiful.

The dress benefited from the soft bow - It moved from girlish to elegant. I must be honest, though, I much prefer the more structured look on her at this stage in her life. It's more becoming; stronger and elegant.

Does anyone else feel that white is simply not a stunning colour for her? I think it makes her look pale. Truly stunning looks have been in warm colours IMO. That said, Ido like the sash a lot better that the flowers, and suspect she was going for a dramatic look with the black gloves and clutch. However, I suggest that it would have made a big difference to put her hair up - even half up, and choose other jewellery. Nonetheless, she is always impressively beautiful no matter what she wears!

  96. A risk is not a risk if there is not at least a 50% of it not coming together. And I respect Kate for taking a fashion risk. Even though it maybe did not work as she planned.

I like the black gloves with the white dress, it just seem like it was planned with a different dress in mind. This dress is to floaty and etheral to go with the heavy black gloves. You need a more structured dress in a heavier fabric, maybe a satin or even a brocade to pull of the gloves.

Luckily Kate is a beautiful woman who looks stunning even is her outfit does not come together.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Another thought to support your idea that this was not the dress she planned to wear. Why not add some black details like a black belt or black jewelry to pulle everything together.

  98. I think Kate has stepped up and into her new role as Princess of Wales with great panache and aplomb! What better way to dress for an artistic awards show than by shopping in your own closet! First, start by picking a gown to rewear and slightly rework, mix elements for a dramatic effect (chiffon/velvet), take a few high and low accessories (earrings/gloves/shoes), and wear your hair down to give it all a modern twist. She made bold choices, took a bold chance and made a bold statement! Fashion-wise it was completely out of the box, sartorially and artistically it was very clever. Certainly, not for everybody, but for her critics she didn't buy a new gown and she didn't reach into the vaults for the crown jewels, and by the measure of her smile and confidence, she completely owned her look! Editorially, it photographed well in color and black and white. Cinderella came to the ball with eyes only for her prince, and left everybody talking about her. Love it!
