Kate's First St Patrick's Day as Irish Guards' New Royal Colonel

Good evening, dear readers. Firstly my apologies for the lateness of the post. I experienced technical issues throughout yesterday which led to an almost completed post being wiped. Thank you for your thoughtful and kind comments and most of all your patience! Now, let's take a look at William and Kate's St Patrick's Day appearance which saw Kate in impeccable regal style. On a more important note, I thought it her most significant moment to date as Princess of Wales with a handover and speech for the new royal Colonel. There was a notable air of gravitas surrounding the occasion.

At the annual Irish Guards St Patrick's Day celebrations at Mons Barracks, Aldershot, the Princess of Wales attended the parade for the first time as the regiment's new royal Colonel. Prince William, in attendance in his capacity as outgoing Colonel, joined his wife for the official handover of the position.

It follows Kate's action filled day with the Irish Guards on snowy Salisbury plain earlier this month. On International Women's Day, Kate met with the regiment and participated in a variety of exercises and training techniques. Afterwards, the Irish Guards expressed their delight in Kate taking on the role and were impressed by her "hands on" attitude.

Lieutenant Colonel James Aldridge MBE, Commanding Officer, 1st Bn Irish Guards said: “We are enormously grateful to HRH The Prince of Wales for his support for over eleven years, including through operational tours to Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan and Cyprus, three Queen’s Birthday Parades, and our Presentation of New Colours last year. We offer a very warm welcome to HRH The Princess of Wales, who is of course no stranger having handed out Shamrock on St Patrick’s Day Parades throughout her husband’s Colonelcy, and who has already shown her commitment visiting Irish Guards training teams on Salisbury Plain in the snow last week.” This year’s celebrations also marked the first coming together of all the elements of the newly re-roled Irish Guards Regiment.

Warrant Officer Class 1 Swain, the Regimental Sergeant Major, 1st Battalion Irish Guards said added: “St Patrick’s Day is a highlight each year for members of the Irish Guards and is a day that we share with our own families as well as the wider Regimental family. The parade looks different this year with Irish Guardsmen from both the 1st Battalion and the Public Duties Companies on parade together, the former in field army service dress and the latter sporting our famous scarlet red tunics and blue plume adorned bearskins; truly a visual representation of the dual-role soldiers the Irish Guards are famed to be.”

As per tradition, the Princess was on hand to present sprigs of shamrock.

The shamrock was issued along ranks and worn on uniforms.

The final sprig was attached to the regiment's mascot Irish Wolfhound, Seamus.

I know these are always favourite photos from the event. Another one of the adorable mascot? I think so.

Then it was time for the ceremonial handover of the Colonelcy, whereby Prince William officially handed over the position to his wife.

During a speech, Prince William said: "On this, my 13th and final St Patrick’s Day as Colonel, not only am I saddened that I’ll likely fail once again to finish a pint of Guinness, but I am also sad that I won’t in future see more of you, the families, whose unwavering support enables these outstanding men and women to do what they do. I’m proud of everything the regiment stands for – just as I’m immensely proud of every single one of you. I may be stepping aside, but in Colonel Catherine you have a committed, focused, and already incredibly loyal 11th Colonel."

As the Princess took to the podium, she shared her excitement about the new role which she described as "an honour". "I am here to listen to you, to support you, and to champion you in all you do - this is a responsibility I do not take lightly."

She added: "Last week, I took the opportunity to visit some of you on Salisbury Plain, to see your inspiring work for myself. The day was bitterly cold, and while displaying your skills to yet another visitor was probably the last thing any of you wanted to do, all I saw was enthusiasm, pride and incredible dedication. I was hugely impressed with your insistence that nothing is as bad as it seems, and – most of all – your boundless, irreverent, glorious sense of humour. That’s what makes you who you are and what makes the Irish Guards unique."

After the parade, the Prince and Princess sat for official Officers' and Sergeants’ Mess photographs and met soldiers and their families.

The photos are very much reminiscent of days gone by -- particularly of the late Queen Mother. She had a long affiliation and love for the Irish Guards after attending the annual military parade for the first time in 1927. It wasn't until 1964 she started to present the Royal Shamrock to the Battalion, describing it as a "great pleasure which has enabled me to forge a link with the regiment I greatly cherish". The regiment supplied the pallbearers for her funeral in 2002.

Kate's association with the Irish Guards will now be officially linked with her throughout her lifetime.

The Ministry of Defence noted: "For soldiers in the Irish Guards’ newly formed Public Duties Companies (PDCs), Number 9 Company Irish Guards and Number 12 Company Irish Guards, this was their first ever St Patrick’s Day Parade with the 1st Battalion Irish Guards, the Irish Guards Association and cadets. This physical unification gave extra poignancy to the regiment’s motto, 'Quis Separabit' or 'Who shall separate us?' -- a motto taken from the Order of St Patrick, an order of chivalry founded by King George III."

Afterwards, the couple joined a warm and lively reception.

Where it was time to raise a glass to the new Colonel.

And for William to make that attempt at finishing a pint of Guinness.

Kate spent time meeting families.

William and Kate were shown a new regimental painting of the Irish Guards by artist Louise Pragnell, which was painted this year in the state rooms of Royal Hospital Chelsea and includes the Regimental Mascot, Seamus.

The Princess admiring a painting.

The Ministry of Defence added: "The Prince and Princess presented Medals for Long Service and Good Conduct to six Irish Guardsmen and a special Joint Commanders’ Commendation to Captain Chris O’Neill, from Birmingham for his work assuring the training that the Irish Guards were delivering to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Ukraine, and overseeing the safe extraction from the country just prior to the Russian invasion. He said: “When the Russians invaded, I felt gutted. I’m proud that the Irish Guards are training the Ukrainians again as part of the international training team in the UK. I’m the Career management Officer for the Battalion now so no longer part of that role but I left a piece of myself in Ukraine and I’d love to go back and visit when the war’s over."

A fantastic first St Patrick's Day for the Irish Guards' new Colonel.

A video from the event.

The Princess was regal in a perfectly tailored Catherine Walker coatdress with a matching dress underneath.

People notes the choice of teal was not a mere coincidence... "Princess Kate’s ensemble perfectly matched the plumes worn in the bearskin caps by the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. The plume being St. Patrick’s blue was selected because that is the color of the mantle and sash of the Order of St. Patrick."

Kate's hat is a bespoke Jane Taylor piece (with thanks to Polka Popp). In the image below, you can see Kate's unidentified emerald and diamond earrings.

It is thought Kate's matching heels are a Gianvito Rossi style (with thanks to Kate Middleton style).

And Kate's clutch is by Emmy London -- the Natasha style in Lake Suede.

Kate wore the Irish Guards Cartier brooch. The three-leaf brooch, which has been worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Anne, belongs to the regiment and they determine to whom it be loaned.

Kate also wore a sprig of shamrock on her lapel.

  1. I saw it noted that the two sets of four buttons on her coat are an identifier of the Irish Guards as well. Such a great detail she she looks fabulous!

  2. Just a quick comment:

First, I'm not certain whether this is a coat or a coatdress. It looks as though it may be a coat worn over a matching dress, but then again, that may be a lining, in which case, this is a coatdress. The waist feature -- a removable belt? -- appears as though it cannot be easily undone to reveal a dress, so perhaps this is a coatdress, but I'm really not sure.

Whatever the case, I like the stark, slim lines; they address my own minimalist tastes and are something of a departure from the sameness of the many Catherine Walker coatdress designs the Princess has worn. The fascinator trim is rather frothier than I like, but perhaps it was thought that the severe lines of the coat/coatdress, whatever it is, needed to be balanced by something a little frivolous.

The color is a beautiful teal. I'm not convinced that the Princess looks great in it -- I think she's most flattered by rich, definite shades, not uncertain, chameleon colors like teal -- but it's a creative response to traditional St Patrick's Day requirements. Teal is one of those colors that isn't quite blue and isn't quite green, so it's endlessly adaptable for a variety of purposes.

    1. There is one picture when she is sitting for the picture taking, The cost slightly opens on the bottom and seems to reveal a dress or something in the same color as the coat. It would be quite cold to just wear the coat over her undergarments. Maybe it is an undergarment in the same color just to keep her warm.

Charlotte , Thank you for showing us why the PoW was wearing teal . And this is a wonderful article with new information about the Irish Guards. This day seems to be one of their favorite engagements.

  4. Thank you, Charlotte, for this post! What a bittersweet, but special day for them. At first I didn’t get the color connection, but wow is her outfit stunning! It looks amazing in the group photo and fits perfectly. I love the thoughtful details with the buttons and how it matches the officers’ color in the hats. William looks very handsome. Both speeches were lovely and it’s so cool to see her out in the snow with officers just a week ago…and now impeccably dressed as their colonel! Sue from IL

    1. That was my test post. I tried a few times last night to post a comment and it wouldn't upload. That was a lovely engagement for the couple. The Princess looked beautiful as always and The Prince was very handsome in his uniform. I love that colour on her, it makes a nice change from the darker shades of green. It's always great to see the gold shamrock. I like these earrings but they are a bit on the small side. The Princess of Wales emerald earrings would of looked good with this outfit. I haven't seen shamrock worn with other leaves before,it looks good I like it. Charlotte, I'm looking forward to reading your post on Princess Grace, a beautiful lady. Her son Prince Albert was staying here in Cork for St Patrick's weekend. S🙂.

  7. I wonder whether we couldn't try to standardize the terms "coat" and "coatdress" (or "coat dress"). There is obviously some confusion.

In my experience, a garment worn over other garments (that is, not underwear but rather a dress or trousers/sweater, etc.) is a coat. You can take it off to reveal the clothing worn underneath. A particularly elegant coat worn over an elegant dress might be called a "dress coat" or "dressy coat". But it is NOT a "coatdress".

On the other hand, a dress styled like a coat but worn only over underwear is a coatdress -- or coat dress. You can't take it off in public, because you aren't wearing clothing underneath -- just underwear.

This terminology problem has driven me nuts since I was a child in the 1960s and my mother was wearing coats and coatdresses and dressing ME in them. As Easter approaches, I am recalling my childhood dress + coat ensembles and what they were called. I'll bet I'm not the only participant here who does.

    1. LOL..... Vittoria, I am sitting here with the biggest smile on my face & laughing inside! You are cracking me up, as you are letting it all hang out.... not that I'm referring to taking off one's "coat dress" with only under garments on underneath!! ;) (wink, laugh)

Thank you for bringing this up & count me in, as part of your "nutty coat/dress crew"!! :) xoxo

    2. This confuses me also, Vittoria. I think it is a British dilemma, however. In N. America, I really can't recall ever seeing anyone in a coat dress. Here coats are worn over dresses and can be taken off to reveal a dress (or whatever.)

      Delete
    3. Well, Anon, I'm American, and I've owned a number of coatdresses in my time. In fact, one of my all-time favorite dresses was a fitted navy-blue coatdress that I bought for job interviews as I was finishing grad school. I'll agree that coatdresses are less common here than in the UK, and they do seem to be offered largely by fairly high-end fashion labels, though my navy-blue item was from Ann Taylor. I didn't have a lot of money back then, but AT kept me in clothes that were both professional and stylish for some years.

  12. Thanks for this post . I kept waiting for it. The hat and hairstyle are very old Kate but me who loved her first years choices find this appearance underwhelming. I find the hat dated and don't fit the strictness of the coat. I loved her colour choice (She is always glorious in teal) and the gravitas surrounding the event. This is the last time that William would accompany her ,I guess, and I feel a bit nostalgic.

    1. I'm not sure if this is the last time that William will accompany Kate on St. Patrick's Day. Kate accompanied William for years, when he was Colonel, So why can't William continue to accompany Kate, now that she is the Colonel?

  13. Even the two sets of buttons mimicked the buttons on the uniforms!

  14. The honor and respect Princess Catherine has for the Irish Guards and this new role really show in the details of this ensemble. In addition to the color matching the plume in the bearskin caps, I noticed that the front buttons are the same in placement and number as the Guards’ uniforms. Perfect for the photo of this historical day.

  17. What a lovely post. Thank you for clarifying the issue of the color teal. I admit at first I wondered why the Princess wasn’t wearing green. I must say the outfit is gorgeous. Loved seeing Seamus, what a wonderful mascot. Congratulations to the new Colonel.
I have always loved Princess Grace, what a beauty she was. She lives on through her films.

  18. Thank you for the post and I'm glad you're alright, Charlotte. I loved this event and the outfit she wore. I think maybe they put the group photo up on a wall each year and if she reverts back to the usual green, at least for the next few years, it'll remain easy to pick out the photo from her first event as colonel from the teal outfit. I have long liked this colour on Kate. I remember her going to a church service with Harry, when Meghan was pregnant, where she wore a similar colour and looked a million dollars.

    What a look !!

This coat is a real perfection : already its color, fantastic, and then its collar, its shoulder pads and the pleats to mark the shoulders.

I also note the little detail that makes the difference: on Kate's coat the buttons are arranged in the same way as they are on the military uniform: 4 buttons, a space, then 4 buttons again...

And what about the hat ? I love the effect of the tulle which gives a little airy effect to a look that could seem too strict, and yet it is not. This tulle also matches well with the crepe side of the coat.

Kate seems to really enjoy all of her St. Patrick's Day outings and she's right. In addition, green is a color that suits her perfectly.

  21. I LOVE Kate in teal and wish she'd wear it more. Two memorable teal outfits: the gorgeous teal evening gown with the lace back--she's worn it twice, I think. And then a teal skirt suit she wore on an outing with the queen, either before her marriage, or very early days. I think they were at the reopening of a train station. Anyway, Kate + teal = gorgeous!

  24. What an absolutely stunning outfit. Perfect from head to toe. Love that it is the same color teal as ribbon on guards bear skin hats. Live the matching collar and button placement which again matches the guards uniform. Love Williams speech and Colonel Catherine’s speech but most of all I love the wonderful genuinely happy way that William and Catherine conduct themselves at all the events they attend. They have such a genuine relaxed way of meeting and socializing with the public. I am also totally in love with all the traditions the Royal family keep alive.

  30. I’m so happy to hear that you’re ok Charlotte. Like so many of us, I must have checked 8-10 times to read your St Patrick’s Day blog post, and as the hours went by, I started to worry that something must have gone wrong. I can imagine how frustrating that must have been for you Charlotte, to lose an almost a completed post and then to have to start all over again.
I’ve had a really difficult week with my Breast Cancer treatment, and the absolute highlight of my week, that finally bought some happiness to my life, was seeing our beautiful Princess in this incredibly gorgeous coat & matching dress. The intricate & symbolic pairing to incorporate the colours of the Irish Guards Plumes & the placement of the buttons on her coat were masterful, and she looked exquisitely beautiful. I adored her hat, and loved the pleated frill detail. Her gloves, shoes, bag and even the tiny detail of the small stitched loop for the shamrock to be attached was perfection. Her glossy, beautiful hair completed one of her most wonderful looks ever. The speeches of both William & Catherine were deeply moving, and you can see that this will be one of the most honourable appointments that she will hold for the remainder of her life. Thank you Charlotte for such a wonderful post! I’m in hospital at the moment, and reading your blog always brings a smile to my face and I’m so grateful for that. Sending love from Australia to the many lovely readers of your blog xx 💕💕

  33. Charlotte I'm so relieved that all is well! As others have said, it was notable that you didn't have something up, in your usual warp speed! My 1st thought was,"I hope Charlotte is ok"!? Then later I began to worry it was my computer?? I was about to email you today & reach out, but then I checked in here & there it was, along with the adorable photo for Mother's Day! You are so much a part of our lives & truly valued!! xoxo

As to St. Patrick's Day...... I agree that there was quite a feeling of Gravitas! I was taken immediately back to young Kate, when she was at William's "Passing Out Parade" (correct term?) at Sandhurst. When I think back to that young girl, clearly minding her P's & Q's trying to get it all right.... compared to the woman she's grown into & how natural she is in her role as Princess of Wales.... it's quite something..... where did the time go!?

Kate looked smashing in her Teal ensemble! I had just heard about St. Patrick's Blue, when I first saw her outfit online, elsewhere. It was great immediately knowing the connection & seeing that it was important to her too!! It is said "Love is in the details" & I believe it.. which is why I really admire how much thought obviously goes into everything she does & wears! This tells us so much about who she is, to care that much about so many details. She really says so much with all of them!

Again, this is a bittersweet moment.... I'm so happy for & proud of William & Catherine, for all they have ascended to... but it just seems just like yesterday, that this all seemed so far in the future!?

    Bittersweet how fast time flies!
