It's Pink & Pearls as the Princess Celebrates Kinship Carers

The Princess of Wales carried out engagements in London today to shine a spotlight on the importance of nurturing relationships throughout early childhood and beyond. The itinerary was planned with Kate's long-term campaign Shaping Us in mind. The campaign's ultimate goal is to transform early years to "one of the most strategically important topics of our time", according to Kensington Palace.

The Princess' first stop this morning was her patronage The Foundling Museum.

An arrival video.

The Foundling Museum tells the history of the Foundling Hospital, the UK’s first children’s charity and public art gallery.

The museum works with contemporary artists, writers and musicians to develop learning programmes that are meaningful for young people, especially those who are looked after and care-experienced, to help them see the world differently and imagine new possibilities for themselves.

The Princess was greeted by museum representatives and a familiar face -- Grayson Perry. Kate's worked with the artist since her earliest years as a royal when they were both involved with The Art Room.

Kate became Royal Patron of the Foundling Museum in 2019. You may recall she paid her first official visit in the role immediately after a joint engagement with Queen Elizabeth II at King's College. During a speech on the day, wearing grey and black Catherine Walker, Kate said: "I have always believed in the power of art, not only to unlock that creativity, but also to bring us joy, and to inspire, challenge and positively change our lives."

Last January, Kate and William visited the museum to learn more about the care sector in Britain. Kate wore her Hobbs Lara Rollneck sweater and Jigsaw trousers.

Today, the Princess spent time with those with experience of the care system, foster carers and adoptive parents to discuss the "lifelong impact that supportive relationships" have on children from their earliest years.

Kate was accompanied by Professor Green, who was brought up in Kinship care.

The rapper, born Stephen Manderson, has become a respected mental health activist and has been an avid supporter of the royals' work in the area since the 2016 Heads Together campaign.

I remember seeing an interview some years ago with Professor Green in which he very candidly discussed his childhood. He talked about his mum having him when she was just 16 and the immense responsibility for such a young person and the very painful reality of never having a proper relationship with his father, who later died by suicide, recalling the heart-breaking task of identifying his body. Stephen shared on Facebook the photo below from the day he was born with the caption: "I look at this picture and understand that happiness, like everything else, is temporary. It’s just something that exists for a moment."

He credited his grandmother Patricia and great-grandmother Edie who raised him (Patricia took three jobs to support raising her grandson) and how grateful he felt, and still feels, for their love and care. Recalling one moving memory about his great-grandmother he said: "She had this blue blanket that I remember vividly. I used to wake up before everyone else and I’d clamber beneath it and we’d read a book to each other – I’d read a page and then she’d read one. She taught me numeracy and how to read." On the impact of not having his parents by his side growing up, he added poignantly: "I suffered from anxiety and depression. If you have loving parents as a kid, you don’t realise how fortunate you are; I didn’t have that love from them. Only my nan really understood how much I was hurting."

Seeing the joy music gave him, Patricia and Edie encouraged him endlessly in his pursuits. Seeing how proud and happy they were for him spurred Stephen on to the career he has today -- and using that platform to help those who may not have people like Edie and Patricia in their lives. In 2021, Stephen and his fiancée Karima welcomed a baby boy named Slimane.

Kate and Professor Green participated in an insightful group conversation.

More from the Mail Online:

'Themes of the museum’s current exhibition Finding Family inspired the trainees to create poetry, and the royal joined a conversation between them and the singer to hear more about how creative writing has helped them to express their emotions and own experiences.

The royal said she felt "honoured" to have met the group and hear their aspirations.'

Additionally today, the Princess took the opportunity to support her patronage as they strive to reach the immense fundraising goal of £4.6 million to fulfil a once-only opportunity to secure the museum's home and custodianship of the Foundling Hospital Collection for the next 999 years. As the only museum in the United Kingdom to celebrate the lives of care-experienced people and the birth of creative philanthropy, it holds a unique place in our history.

In a statement, Kate wrote: "Their ground-breaking work to support each care-experienced young person to fundamentally change the future direction of their lives is one that means the world to me. Importantly, it shows that it is never too late to make a difference, and that by providing the right support, we can enable those who have faced real difficulties to overcome their challenges and achieve their goals. The Museum’s work opens the door to new opportunities for vulnerable children and young people, connecting them with artists and developing skills which they can take into their adult lives. By helping them to undertake this journey, we can create positive, lasting change that benefits our society as a whole."

The Princess continued to encourage people to support this campaign if they can: "Just as the Museum has helped so many people, I hope that we can come together to do what we can to help protect the long-term future of this wonderful organization. I am grateful to all those who have already shown their support for the Foundling Museum and I sincerely wish that its vital work can continue for decades to come."

Afterwards, the Princess visited Kinship carers.

Kinship carers exist to step in when a parent cannot care for their child. Acknowledging it is a heart-breaking time for all involved, they provide love and care.

More on their work which operates across England and Wales:

'Instinctively, a loved one steps in – a grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle or family friend. They are now a kinship carer, bringing up the children they love. There’s no chance to prepare. Plans are pushed aside. Relationships, jobs and savings are sacrificed.

It’s life changing and challenging raising children who’ve been hurt or neglected, but kinship carers do it anyway because they put the children first.

Kinship families raising over 200,000 children are on the brink of going under because there’s no recognition or support. They feel invisible. They are desperate, but they are fighting.

We know how hard life can be for kinship carers. But we’ve seen the amazing things they’re capable of with someone by their side. With the right support, children raised in kinship families flourish.'

Kate was delighted to join a playgroup.

In February, Kinship achieved a major goal following a successful campaign for "long overdue" government support". The Government’s Children’s Social Care Implementation Strategy "places kinship care front and centre of a new national approach to supporting children and families across England", according to charity. It includes measures that Kinship has long campaigned for, including developing a first ever kinship care strategy by the end of the year and a £9 million national programme of tailored support and training for Kinship carers.

Kinship’s CEO, Dr Lucy Peake said: "As the largest provider of support services designed with and for kinship carers, we know how vital it is that kinship carers are able to access the expert advice and training they desperately need. This new programme of support must be co-designed by kinship carers to ensure it fulfils their needs and maximises their strengths."

For the second engagement, Professor Green brought his grandmother Patricia.

More from The Mail:

'Pat, who is now in a wheelchair, was with him. 'Lovely to meet you, I've heard so much about you,' the Princess said.

Manderson said: 'When my mum gave birth the doctor handed me to my nan and that set the tone for the rest of my life.

'My nan become my guardian when I was three. The first time I heard about Kinship I rang my nan and told her 'did you know you were a kinship carer' and she was like 'what, no?'

'I don't think a lot of people in this situation have heard of this term,' said the Princess.'

The Princess opted for pink and pearls with familiar pieces today.

Kate wore her sophisticated ice pink Alexander McQueen trouser suit. Below, Kate wearing the look last June for an early years engagement.

Today, Kate teamed the suit with a matching pink blouse and Camilla Elphick Pearl Belt (with thanks to Kylie).

Kate accessorised with her Maria Black Cha pearl earrings.

And her pair of white leather Gianvito Rossi 105 pumps.

  1. Grandparents and other relatives caring for children whose parents cannot look after them need a lot of support. I've seen a fair amount of that in the city where I live, and I can't praise these people enough. Anything social service agencies do for them is too little, in my opinion. One of my closest friends in high school was raised by grandparents after her parents died in an accident, and another was raised by an older half-sister. There wasn't much in the way of support and assistance for such heroes back then. It's good to see that someone is addressing this issue.

On to clothes: the Princess seems to have decided that trouser suits should be one of her uniforms, and they do look polished and professional but not overly dressy. They're good for engagements like this one. However, I've never thought that pastels were her colors. This suit, while beautifully tailored, isn't as flattering as it could be, because the baby-pink shade is a little anemic. The Princess's coloring repays vibrant, vivid hues. Pastels tend to fall flat on her.

And I don't much care for the belt. It's too wide, and the buckle is too large. The pearls don't quite work with a trouser suit. I realize she chose pearl earrings, too, but they are unobtrusive. The belt is screaming, "Look at me!" and rather discordantly, too. A belt was needed to break up all the pale pink, but I know the Princess owns a slim pink belt with an ordinary buckle. It's darker in color than this pink, but that would have performed the job of punctuating the sea of baby-pink rather more successfully, I think.

Trouser suits with matching vests are currently trendy. I think one would have worked better with this suit than the pink blouse. In fact, a vest in a different color -- cream, perhaps -- might have made a real style impact and been wearable with other items.

    1. I probably should have typed "waistcoat" instead of "vest". I know the word "vest" means different things on the two sides of the big pond. I'm always so careful to use "trousers" instead of "pants".

    2. I agree. I will say though that I am so happy she isn’t wearing blue for a change. (Even though her love for cobalt blue could work great with a suit.) Additionally, I think this pink works ok with her complexion. Pastel blue, purple or green are way worse.
At first I liked the top. No high round neck for a change. And especially thankful it’s not a white, high round neck t-shirt. But it’s too much. A deeper or much lighter shade would have worked great. Or a white blouse, if she felt she needed white.
Absolutely agree about the belt. Let’s hope we never see it again. The white heels also don’t work for me.
I do like Kate in suits with the classic slim trousers. I just hope it’s not another case of buying 75 new pieces only to never to be seen again when before the next trend rolls in. She has a massive wardrobe of working clothes from past phases. A bit or rotation would be nice. For example her many sheet dresses are just as professional in a corporate business pov. Why not bring them back to mix it up.

    3. I am thinking that Kate has forgone the sheath dresses for events where she interacts with the children. The longer dresses and pant suits seem more appropriate in these instances.

  2. I really like this outfit. As a trouser suit it is businesslike, but the lovely Spring colour with matching blouse and pearl belt raises it a level for a visit by a princess.

    1. Completely agree, Trickymum. Fit for a princess!! A professional, polished look that remains soft and feminine because of the pastel pink and the embellished belt. This is an icy pink, which looks very good on Kate. If I had to quibble, it would be to say that I preferred the dark pink shoes she wore with the suit previously. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not a fan of white pumps which make me think of Barbie Doll shoes (isn't that association ridiculous?!).

      Delete
    2. No IMO, the white pumps give me the same association!!! Not a fan of white pumps, and would have preferred the darker pink pumps and maybe darker pink belt she wore with the pink dress the first time. BUT with all that being said, the suit is beautiful, fits well, and suits the occasion. Am liking the rewear of clothing for these day visits and think she is doing a very good job of mixing things up, even if not all are to my taste. Above all else, she looks poised and polished.

  4. Charlotte, this detailed posting is so informative and interesting, as was your detailed posting on the Chelsea Flower Show. I have learned so much about the organizations that Kate is supporting through your blog. I find myself less interested in what she's wearing and more interested in the wonderful organizations she is supporting, and their back stories. I believe that is her goal: to use her own beauty and stature to shine a light on issues and organizations that are so important. Your blog hews closely to that goal, and I really appreciate it. Nowhere else do I find this kind of insightful and factual analyses of Kate's patronages and causes. Thank you for all the hard research you do!

(Off-topic: I have something to share with fellow royal fans: I've seen Prince Edward today! He's been here in Prague since Tuesday and today was the final day of the visit. He met our President, awarded about 40 students with their Golden DOFE awards, planted a 100th tree in Prince Philip parkway and laid a wreath at The National Memorial to the Heroes of the Heydrich Terror. That's where I went, hoping to see him, and I succeeded! I was lucky to get quite near and saw him from about 3-meter distance. It made my day as you can imagine! I was only sorry Sophie wasn't with him.) Zora from Prague

  5. The fit on the suit, including the slim pants, is great! One small nit is that pastel pink is not great with her coloring so wish it was several shades darker, but my big nits are the awful belt and white shoes. I appreciate that she stepped away from matching everything from head to toe, but different accessories of better quality could have elevated this outfit.

  7. I really really like her!!!!! I have some thoughts though, and I don't want haters. Shouldn't the waleses have a more filled schedule?? Where are the overseas visits, the foreign trips, the representation of the crown?? The Jordan wedding shouldn't be their responsibility?? Crown prince couple to Crown prince couple wedding?? I mean Kate barely ever does more than two engagements per week!!! Just wondering.......

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Im wondering the same. Where are the foreign tour celebrating the coronation? The minor royals do more foreign trips and tours than Will and Kate does

      Delete
    2. That’s a good question. I would have thought they’d do a tour to a Commonwealth country to celebrate the coronation. Sometimes they go weeks without a public engagement. It’s odd.

      Delete
    3. It is a problem. And I think many supporters/fans aren’t blind to the fact. I definitely don’t shy away from criticising it. All children are in school, so they could easily be more visible at least 3 times a week each. My only excuse is that their numbers aren’t that far off other crown couples. But against the heavy hitters that the members of the BRF are, they look extremely bad. Being out performed by people way past retirement age is just a bad look. My guess though is, that the numbers will go down over all eventually and that the BRF will move in the same numbers territory of other royal houses. Which the Walses aren’t far off. They will just ignore the criticism till this change is done and no one is saying anything against it.

      Delete
    4. I’m sure something is planned I think there will be something announced soon as these things take a lot of planning. All the work they do isn’t just the visible, attending charities like today there would be a lot of preparation before a visit be it an overseas or in UK takes a lot of work. I imagine that after a visit like this the PoW and her staff would head back to their offices for meetings to plan and prepare for the future ones. Also we have to appreciate they have a young family too. So I think enough is being done by them and the other Royals representing the Crown. Sue in WA

      Delete
    5. I totally agree 2 seems to be the number of engagements per week . It’s now half term so unlikely to see any engagements for at least a week . William seems to do only a few engagements per week too

      Delete
    6. I believe there is a master plan - if you will - and an understanding about the number of commitments per week for William and Kate, so I am not so concerned about that. I also believe that the tours will begin and think that who will go where is being determined and worked out strategically - politics aside, with King Charles kicking off an important one in Africa. However, I do truly think that William and Kate should be in attendance at the Royal wedding in Jordan. Just MHO.

      Delete
    7. I agree they really need to be stepping up their workload now. Most parents of school age children don't both take all the school holidays off work - that's simply not how people live! Yes, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes, but William and Kate live an extraordinarily privileged life, and they need to be seen to be working for it. "They have children" feels like an excuse to me now. So do many couples - but they still have to turn up to work.

    8. Having read all this discussion, I just wanted to jump in, as I have been wondering a different thing.... I don't know how many of you have been reading the speculation on the potentiality, that Kate more than ruffled Charles & Camilla's feathers, by her visit to the Chelsea Show getting way more coverage than theirs.

There have been a lot of other speculation & reports about C&C being very concerned about Will & Kate stealing their thunder. So I can't help wondering how much of what Will & Kate (as P&P of Wales) are going (or are allowed) to do in their new roles & positions in the BRF!? We all have read for years about Charles' insecurities & it's legendary how jealous he was of Princess Diana getting so much more coverage.

In fact, I recently stumbled upon an article, saying that it's down to William, to be given so much of the credit of not only helping Kate find her way through royal life & the BRF, but for being so proud of her & only wanting her to shine, without a hint of jealousy!

I think this is no small thing & very true! I think it has a lot to do to their relationship & it's length, as well as the nature of it's beginning & of Kate & the perspective she brings to the table. I'm sure William absolutely wants her to shine & succeed as POW, unlike what his mother had to contend with, from his father's lack of support etc.

      Just my 2 cents.

      Delete
    9. & just like that, as soon as I wrote my post about Charles' potential jealousy of Kate stealing his limelight.... The very next thing I read was a great article stating that Kate is being encouraged to shine, with Charles's Blessing! "That while it is his head that wears the crown, it is Will & Kate & kids that will steal the limelight." & that he's ok with that because he realizes that if the monarchy is to survive, it's down to how popular & well liked they are!

    10. I think a few visits a week is plenty, you have the other Royals doing visits, and frankly the reason for the visit is to help promote and if you are out promoting all the time along with other Royals out promoting all the time it stops helping. You also as the visitor need to prepare ad get ready for the visits and promotion. Ali

      Delete
    11. I agree Ali. The public engagements are the tip of the iceberg. It happens for a lot of professions, you have to prepare meetings and conferences,
it wouldn't be fair to think you only work when you are seen. Take teachers, they work much more than the hours they are in the classroom. Or politicians or diplomats( which they are actually). And being home with the children doesn't mean you don't work, read, prepare make calls...since covid, isn't it how most families function? The proof they do, is when they are seen, it is obvious they are very well informed. Even all that diplomatic dressing takes a lot of time to research and to plan.

    14. Re school breaks. Thousands of families in Britain schedule time off over Whitsun to get away. Roads, airports and seaside resorts are packed. The Waleses are not the only ones who like to spent time away with their children.

    15. We really have to be very careful and skeptical when it comes to what the tabloids claim. Their so-called "royal experts" (a label that makes me laugh) do not have a direct, telepathic channel to any royal's thinking about this or that. They pretty much just make it up as they go along. They don't know, and neither do we, what the King and Queen Consort think about the Waleses' popularity, what William might or might not have done for his wife, whether anyone is or is not "jealous," etc.. I try very hard to avoid these trashy publications, even though it means pretty much sticking to discussions of clothes on a site like this. I've always thought they were poison (as well as very badly written), and my conviction on that score has only grown firmer in recent years.

      Delete
    16. Yes they . It’s really unusual for both parents to have all the school holidays off . It must be nearly 5 months off both William and Kate take

      Delete
    17. So people actually believe everything the media writes. Wow I would have thought people would be wiser these days. As for school holidays. Nobody has any idea what they do during the school holidays. Administration alone for the Duchy would be massive. Maybe they plan stuff like that during the holidays. Maybe Catherine and William learn another language or study up on their charities. The point is we don’t know so stop stirring up imaginary stuff and believing the media. Also if Catherine does nothing else on the school holidays then be a Mum well good on her. If you can’t I’m sorry but I did and wouldn’t change it for the world. My most important job was easing my children and I love Catherine for doing and having the ability. Some people who don’t need to work still lets other people look after their children because it’s easier. I commend Catherine

    18. I could understand if they did plenty of engagements during term time but they don’t . No doubt there is plenty of people already running the Duchy - the King would have had a well oiled team dealing with the day to day running.
As we are all aware it’s is the young adults that are not as supportive of the monarchy as older generations. In my opinion they need to be more relatable to public rather than being seen as over privileged. 5 months off a year is excessive and does not show a good work ethic to their subjects or children

    21. There might be things going on behind the scene, but she has a team of people that do everything for her. As a royal, their job is to be “seen” and support their patrongages. 12. Great cause. I think the color of the suit looks good on Catherine. A very nice looking jacket and pants. I do not like the white belt or white shoes. All that pink did need to be broken up. Maybe a high quality black leather simple belt and black pumps? Or a camel color? Ali

  13. Thanks Charlotte for the lovely post. I love the suit look on Kate, and I do like the color on her. I do like her in fall color’s better, but this is soft and pretty. I am not a fan of the belt. I like that she matched the shoes, belt and earrings, but no…my eye goes right to the belt. I would like to have seen just a belt with a normal buckle (maybe gold to tie with the earrings). But other than that being my only quibble, she looks very pretty.

What's really striking to me, is to look at Kate back in 2019 & to see her now! She has just grown by leaps & bounds in her confidence & into her role! I really think these things really started to take root during the Pandemic, when she & William had to take on so much of the work & were very much the face of The Royal Family, during that time.

Without wanting to get into politics too much, I think there was a feeling after their last Caribbean tour and even more after the demise of her late Majesty, some Commonwealth countries might want to reconsider their status as realms or republics. So they might be giving them time to decide before wading in and facing lots of anti-monarchy flak.

    4. Trickymum, I agree with you. I believe there will be a reassessment of Royal tours. Objectively the Caribbean tour had all the elements to be a success like every former tour by the Cambridges. But there are other issues at play and Foreign affairs would probably tread with caution before asking the best-known members of the RF to go on a well-publicised tour that could be used as a platform for other interests.

Unfortunately, it was badly planned from the get-go, the optics were poor, and plenty of openings were left for naysayers and critics to step to the fore. That was the fault of Kensington Palace and the monarchy machine in general. The secretaries and other staffers often seem to me to be operating in a time warp of some variety; the world has moved forward, but they, apparently, have not. The same complaints are being made about them now that were made in the 1980s and early 90s, and that has to change. Tradition is admirable and desirable in some contexts, but when it's doing damage, it has to be re-evaluated and sometimes jettisoned.

The British monarchy has a number of vulnerabilities where tours are concerned. Perhaps it's best that tours should be limited until these are addressed. In any case, it's normally been for the newly-crowned monarch and his/her consort to make tours following a coronation. Charles and Camilla's ages may preclude this now, but until some serious re-assessments are made, it may be that the Waleses and other royals should stay home for a while, not least because it's not as though they haven't been touring for years. They have. In any case, tours are expensive, and Charles is trying to avoid the appearance of extravagance. For good reason.

    9. Well I think people should let the public decide from those Commonwealth Countries and not media which then people believe is a true version of events. I’m from Australia and can guarantee they will be warmly welcomed by a huge portion of the population which seemed to be the case on the Caribbean visit. Politicians unfortunately don’t know, care or even speak on our behalf.

    10. I agree tours should be on hold for the time being . However if there are no tours they should be covering all counties of the uk on a regular basis . They could visit charities and organisations that were the queens patronages and have no replacement patron . They would meet more of the public

    11. I understand the cost of tours is born by the country hosting, whom the royals visit by invitation.

  18. This pantsuit looks splendid, love the pale pink color. The blouse underneath, I prefer to the white she wore previously. Love the belt and shoes, the pearl earrings are gorgeous. She looks very stylish and elegant. This was a great visit.

  19. When you look at the suit from the side, I just love the design of the pockets. I prefer the initial wearing of the suit, but like to see her trying new styling. What a wonderful organization! Love both visits and I love your informative posts! Sue from IL

  20. I really like this outfit. As a trouser suit it is businesslike, but the lovely Spring colour so much love the engagement

Does the term care experienced” mean a child who was cared for by a family not related to them? We call that foster care in the US. I love the Kinship support for family members.
As for the outfit today : I’m going to be the odd one out and say I love this suit on her. The pink is a gentle color. This pink and white looks perfect for a late spring day. Beige or black shoes would be okay and very traditional. A darker pink shoe & belt might look too much like Barbie . Anything in pink or orange tones over here is being called barbiecore. I like those colors, just not mixed.

  22. What a lovely event and smart suit. Can somebody please educate me on current etiquette for a curtsy or bow in 2023. I was a bit surprised to see neither. P.S. I had hoped white pumps would not return from 1986.

  23. Thanks again Charlotte for your information it is really great and gives a good insight to all of these visits. I like the colour of the suit and Kate looks lovely in it but I agree with others that I don’t think the belt works and I’m not a fan of the white shoes either. Sue in WA

  24. Let me join in praising you and this blog, Charlotte - informative, interesting and well balanced - as always!!! We're here for a reason!

A wonderful charity for Kate - suits her profile well.

Now to something completely different :-): I believe I could almost like this look if she removed the belt, the earrings and kicked off those 80ies white pumps - together the look is a bit OTT; too cute and sugary for my taste.

The suit itself fits beautifully, and I like the blouse/top.

  25. Doesn’t Princess Kate looks just amazing!

    Full of self-confidence and self-respect.

She is a fine example of being her own person, not to seek anybody’s approval, and yet filled with great empathy for all whom she meets.

She does her role with sincerity, with her heads held high.

UK should be proud to have her as a Princess.

Lovely lovely photos! So much smiles and lovely gestures!

    Definitely makes my day!

    ❤️❤️❤️

  26. I adore Catherine: her warmth, her generosity, her sunshine smile. I think pants suits are a smart choice, but this pink outfit gives me a sugar rush, and not in a good way. I prefer it with a white blouse, as she wore it before. I also think the belt with the faux pearls is too much. But even if Catherine wore a burlap bag I’d still love her!

    1. The more I have looked at this outfit the more I dislike that belt...it is one of those items that I suspect she will regret wearing when she looks back on these photos 5 years from now...I have several of those photos from over the years:):) Ali

  27. After revisiting her look, I would not wear that pink shirt with it. Too much pink and the style of the shirt for some reason makes me think of someone working in a Dr or dentist office. So keep the suit, ditch the belt shoes and shirt. The white shirt she wore with it before with a camel or black belt and shoes.Ali

  28. I love Kate in this outfit. She looks happy and, well, pink is my favorite color!
Seeing Kate with the late Queen Elizabeth (I’m American but that still makes me sad) makes me wonder, does anyone know what will happen to the Queen’s beautiful clothes?

  29. Love this colour of suit, also like the matchy match of the top underneath... Don't even mind the belt though it's a bit girly and pretty rather than business like (and the pink colour ticks the pretty box suffiently enough). But HATE the white heels - the combination makes it look like she has too-short trousers. I think flats would've been much better. The white is too stark

  30. Re the Queen's clothes. The ones from special occasions - evening gowns, ensembles worn to weddings, Jubilee services and that type of thing - will certainly be conserved in the archive of the Royal Collections and shown at exhibitions at Buckingham and Kensington Palaces and elsewhere.
It has been said that in the past, less known garments are stripped of any identifying detail and sent to charity shops or handed on. HM had a huge wardrobe, so I can't imagine them keeping everything.

  31. She looks great, and comfortable, appropriate and engaged. I wonder if she doesn't take her immediate audience -- in this case, at least for parts of the day, toddlers and young children -- into account when choosing accessories? I used to have a professional job that required regular "performances" and conversations with groups of young children and preteens. I would always dress professionally, comfortably (all that bending down, etc) but would always try to have one silly, eye-catching thing (often themed nail-polish colors) or a pin or scarf that would appeal to little kids, with bright colors or a shape or idea they'd recognize. That belt would scream "princess lady" to my little granddaughter, for instance, as would the pink. Another coup for Catherine if you ask me! Not every outfit is meant to please the taste-makers of the adult world, I suspect. Isn't that rather the point of the whole "early childhood" focus -- that young children are worthy full humans in their own right, not just creatures on their way to being adults? The Barbie/Princess vibe may be intentional. If it opens up communication and trust, I say good on her.
