The Princess Praises "Really Precious" Charity Streets of Growth

The Princess of Wales was in Aldgate, London today to see the work of an incredible organisation first-hand.

Street of Growth is a not-for-profit youth intervention charity in East London which is working to transform the lives of young people at risk of becoming trapped in a cycle of isolation, exploitation, violence and criminality.

The charity specialises in targeted outreach and intervention to re-engage young people aged 15-25, taking an approach that balances organisation-led and community-led engagement.

In the past twenty years, Streets of Growth has transformed the lives of over 5,000 young people.

The organisation was established in 2001, inspired by a research visit to see the work of Roca in Boston, which the Prince and Princess of Wales visited during their time in the city in December 2022, as part of a wider schedule of engagements in conjunction with the Earthshot awards.

Kensington Palace said: "Like Roca, Streets of Growth uses approaches that tackle harm and create systems change using neuroscience and cognitive skills to better equip practitioners, young people and their families to break negative behavioural patterns and consequently play a central role in building thriving communities. Key to this is nurturing honest partnerships, including with police and youth offending teams, social services, schools and colleges, and housing associations in the approach."

Hello! reports:

'During the engagement, Kate was welcomed by Streets of Growth founder Darren Way, as well as eight frontline staff, some of whom were once young clients of the charity themselves before turning their lives around.

Kate admired the large space and "places where everyone can come together to be creative – it's really precious," she said.

"Young people get judged on their external behaviour but you have to understand their backstory," she told staff. "They haven't probably seen trusting relationships in their lives so that's so important."'

Kate joined in a podcast where young people were discussing body image and mental health. The Princess praised the charity's "precious work".

A spokesperson added: "Streets of Growth’s Appropriate Intervention Bridging Model looks at lifestyle, environment, education and careers. Frontline staff engage vulnerable young people who have experienced harm and trauma through a tailored pathway of specialised intervention coaching, skills development, social action and work experience across a wide range of sectors."

The Princess met frontline staff to hear about the approach that Streets of Growth takes to identify, support and coach young people at risk. Many of the organisation’s staff were once young clients who have transformed their own lives and are now supporting other young people to transform theirs, so the impact of mentorship is another valued bonus.

Kate spent time with representatives from Unite Students, who have provided the new space for Streets of Growth at their flagship student accommodation building in East London, helping to increase the capacity of the organisation to work in this area.

The Princess met Ray Donovan actor Eddie Marsden, a patron of the charity, during the visit.  The talented star told the Princess he supports the charity as he "wants to give something back": "The problem is that so many young people don't have access to services like this; we need to scale it up, up and down the country." According to Hello!, Kate told Eddie, "It is possible it does make a difference."

More from the Evening Standard:
'The princess said an effort must be made to understand the people as individuals, before adding: “I love the fact that you’re going out into communities.”

Kate then met two sets of mothers and daughters to speak about the support they have received, and how she thought the charity offered “something that young people are craving”.

The families also showed her jewellery and footwear designs made possible by Streets of Growth’s creative workshops, which the princess described as “really beautiful” and “so creative”.'

The Princess opted for a camel trouser suit today by Roland Mouret. We've discussed on the blog how they've become a staple in Kate's wardrobe especially over the past year.

It appears Kate is wearing her Kiki McDonough cushion drop earrings again today.

Several of you have been in touch regarding a Camilla Tominey article in the Telegraph claiming Kate "is not expected" to join William in Singapore for Earthshot. I've asked around about this, and at present there doesn't appear to be clarity (though over the summer, two other royal reporters said Kate will be there). As the Waleses don't have a Commonwealth tour on the agenda this year, I understood we would see several days in Singapore, with Earthshot the centrepiece of the visit. Kate has been an important part of the previous two ceremonies, so I find it difficult to imagine she won't be present this year. I'll keep you all updated. After all that fantastic styling over the summer, we do need to see what the Princess actually chooses for the event :)

  1. I grew up in the 1960's. Trouser suits or pant suits as we called them were "in". This is ageism and personal preference. I'm delighted to see The Princess of Wales in bell bottom trousers, I've not been fond of skinny trousers, many women don't have the body for skinny pants, it leaves a feeling of body dislike. My personal hope is for looser trousers and six inch shorter skirts. Slightly different subjects but the pointed toe 5-6inch heel is death to health feet. I'm a strong proponent for healthy mind and body. Clothes designers should consider healthy mind and body. Just an old lady.

  2. Another businesslike appearance by Kate.
I like this trouser shape, and the camel colour suits her.
I do hope Kate goes to Singapore!

    1. It is always interesting to see everybody's take and differing opinions on Kate's clothes. I like the trouser shape, and the flare, but not the fit, and while I like camel, think other than a white top underneath would have given it more interest maybe? Completely agree about hoping Kate goes to Singapore, can't really imagine why she wouldn't, unless to let the focus be totally on William.

  3. Hi Charlotte, a question for you. When you switched to this blog (versus the previous one), I have noticed a lot more ads showing up. I read it on my mobile so I am not sure if that makes a difference in the number of ads? Reading today's post, there are 8, some of which appear in the middle of the quotes. I don't recall so many appearing previously?

Streets of Growth sounds like a wonderful organization. My son had an extremely difficult number of years as a teenager. We participated in a local organization here focused on teens in crisis and it made all the difference. He is now married with a little girl and full time employed. I often wondered if he would ever get to this point and thankfully he has. These types of programs are most definitely needed.

    1. Thank you for letting me know, I will contact my web designer today. That shouldn't be happening at all.

    2. The adds are those horrible ones that block viewing and make it impossible to read on my phone as well. I’ve never tried in computer. This particular blog wasn’t as bad as some 6 plus the one you get when you first open blog each time.

    3. Actually Charlotte, the experience with the ads is happening with me too. I just assumed it was part & parcel with how you are running this as a business, which I thought made total sense! However, it does interfere in my reading. I read on a laptop & the ads in the middle, that BTL mentioned, happen to me too. It does make reading the post a bit tricky. Also, when I click on the link to read comments, the ads fill the whole screen & I have to click it off, in order to see the comments & then the ads are reduced to the bottom 1/4 of the page.... but I just assumed that was the way it was designed. I hope this helps!? xoxo

    4. Hi Charlotte, I too have been seeing many ads that interrupt your wonderful posts. Thank you for everything you do.

    5. Thanks BTL for sharing your experience with your son. We have 4 children & our daughter was the only one, that did everything (University, Great 1st job on Capitol Hill etc, marriage, family) in the accustomed order. Our 3 sons each hit a troubled time, for different reasons, in their late teen.... early University years. They/We too, would not have gotten through, without lots of professional help & luckily great immediate & extended family help, love & support . They went on to help each other, in terms of the older one helping the next in line.

They all came out the other side & have found great success = in business & more importantly, being incredible human beings. All they learned from their trials, is definitely woven into the fabric of who they are. However, they all are behind their peers, in terms of career wise & buying homes etc... this is hard on them & they are very hard on themselves at times, re: this, but we are very proud of them.

A friend one time said to me.... "As parents we don't want our children to have to 'reinvent the wheel', but some people need to build their own wheel"! Our sons wouldn't be who they are today, had they not learned so much about themselves & life, through their struggles. However, it could have so easily gone the other way for them!!! I/We Never take that for granted & all 3 give back & help others, including their cousins that are struggling.

My oldest son got his MBA, (is a Marketing Consultant) & has a beautiful family with 2 children. He also is a musician & came out with an album (that was featured in the Sunday Arts section of our Chicago Tribune) & he wrote all the songs... it was a healing experience, all focused on his Mental Health journey. Our 2nd son is in Wealth Management & getting married this Thanksgiving & our youngest is finishing in Finance & already has multiple job offers....

We also weren't sure we'd ever see each of them get to the other side!! Having help out there for them & for us was critical & is the same for other families, especially for those that don't have the incredible support system our sons had.

    6. Charlotte, I have also noticed the same thing with ads on mobile. They’re huge and there’s so many of them!

    7. There seem to be more and more ads on your blog all the time and they have turned a previously attractive blog into one that really isn't.

    8. Interesting point! I've always assumed that because the blog is free it is loaded with ads (hence why wiki says, please support us with $ so we don't have ads)
I counted seven ads in this post on the mobile, but to be fair it's been like this for a long time.
I don't mind it if it brings $$ to Charlotte 😁

    9. I have noticed this same pattern since you switched sites as well. I chalked it up to rising cost of business but it is a tad irritating nonetheless.

  4. I think she wore the other color of this suit to visit the organization in Boston that inspired the one she visited today! The pant length is long but it looks good on the pic coming in the door. It’s a nice outfit. Nothing too exciting, but professional. Thanks Charlotte! Sue from IL

I know this is a Kate blog, but since you wrote about Harry on the Meghan blog, I just had to add that the Earthshot Summit in NYC was amazing! Short, but super effective. Love the oyster project, new finalists and the continued support and scaling of previous finalists’ work.

  5. I think this is a great visit and really good to see her working regularly. I liked the colour of the suit (I surprised myself a bit!) but don't love the shape of the trousers. Still, she's doing a good job!

  6. This is a lovely trouser suit, the Princess look so elegant. She looked radiant on this visit.

  7. It's a good charity to focus on.

I love her look from the waist up but I just don't like the pants. I don't know.

It would be a real disappointment to not see what she picks for Singapore!

  8. Very nice Mouret trouser suit, in a lovely camel color, but I am not convinced that such paler colors really flatter the Princess's coloring. It repays very definite or jewel tones.

I see someone taking some delight in the flared trousers, which have returned to style in recent years, though they're not called "bell bottoms," which very retro term I suspect might put some people off, me included. Personally, I wasn't crazy about bell-bottoms in the 70s, but it wasn't easy finding trousers that weren't flared. I was a great Betsy Johnson fan back then, but all her trousers were belled! I do remember trouser suits becoming a thing in the late 60s. I had a purple number that 12-year-old me thought was terribly chic. I shudder to remember it now. Modern trouser suits are vastly preferable.

I've been a fan of Eddie Marsan's acting for some years. He was terrific in "Vera Drake". Nice to see him involved in this charity. I do think "Marsan" is the correct spelling of his name.

  9. The trouser pants would have looked wonderful if it were a couple of inches shorter. But overall, I like the outfit

  10. Wow!! The crowds waiting for William in NY, amazing! How do people know when the royals will be a at certain time? I knew he was visiting the firemen but the time was not disclosed. And even like that hundreds of people were waiting to see him.

  11. Two comments today: one about Princess Kate and one about Prince William.
I think the Princess looks absolutely beautiful today. Beauty inside and out. You can see her attentiveness and her caring here as well as at all her appearances. But I am not a fan of the slacks in this suit, which has the appearance of 1970's bell-bottom polyester, perhaps because the front of the slacks are flat. I guess there is a side or back zipper. Reminds me of the elastic wasted polyester slacks that most of us wouldn't be caught dead wearing.

I want to praise Prince William and his team for the smart and considerate (and safe) way he was taken to his engagements in New York City during this very busy week while the United Nations General Assembly is taking place. When the UN is in session, there are multiple road closures and lots of extra gridlock in Manhattan. Instead of a showy motorcade that would have caused more traffic problems, William landed at Newark Airport in New Jersey and took a boat across the Hudson River to Manhattan. So smart!! So considerate by reducing the impact of his visit on an already traffic-congested city. And safer for him than sitting in a car stuck in traffic. Good job, William.

    1. Logistically, it was the best avenue for William since he timed the Eartshot engagement at the craziest time for Manhattan. Plus I don’t think Will needs to worry about security. Guaranteed no paparazzi was going to pull any kind of shenanigans. There is so much security right now due to Biden, Zelensky, Lavrov (Russia’s rep) and many other top world leaders attending the UNGA opening. The Clintons are there. Other royalties too were attending various UN summits. Jill Biden was also there for the UNICEF Champions for Children Event. I wish Kate went with Will here because the UNICEF event would have dovetailed nicely with her early childhood initiative. Perhaps next year.

  12. I like her look today. It is giving off strong 70ts vibes. She looked great. The citrine earrings look great with the suit. This is a fantastic charity, giving support to young people at a very important time In their lives, especially with some having no other support in life. The Princess is right. It's very precious work they are doing. Charlotte any idea when we will see The Prince and Princess again? S.🙂.

    2. Don’t forget there is a diary clash. State Opening of the Parliament takes place the same day as the ceremony in Singapore. May be she will accompany the king and we will see another Kate’s first. And it will be tiara event…. IJ

    3. Earthshot is Will’s baby so if Kate wants to give this one a rest, it’s fair. Will doesn’t accompany her on all the Early Childhood Initiative events. Will travelled overseas by himself a few times now so it won’t be a precedent. I laughed out loud though at one of the tabloids’ article likened Will wearing his waders for the Oyster event in NYC to the scene of Mr. Darcy emerging dripping wet from the lake. It was cute but alas no Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy.

    4. I'm joking. I would be very happy for them if they did decide to expand their family. I suppose they are blessed with 3 beautiful view happy children. As for the State opening of Parliament. I really don't expect to see her there this year. Especially when The Prince of Wales will be in Singapore. Thanks Charlotte, I'm looking forward to your next update. S.🙂.

  16. This was a rare total miss for me. I don't like this color on Kate, and I am not a fan at all of the bell-bottom look. The pants are very floppy, too long, and not polished/tailored looking at all.

  17. A little bit tired of trousers, a time for a dress maybe?????

  18. I like the style of the suit and the wide leg trouser. I wish that Kate had paired it with a blouse that had a pattern and was any color other than white. Eddie Marsan looked fabulous in that blue/purple suit (I loved him and thought he was stellar in Ray Donovan) along with the other gentleman in the royal blue suit with black T-shirt. Perhaps Kate could have a worn a vest (with no shirt underneath) as I think something that came down over the top of the waist of her pants would have improved the overall look of the pant/fit. I also think she could have gone with a darker (pecan?) shoe. What a fabulous visit and charity.

Any plans to re-upload the blog posts prior to 2016? I was feeling nostalgic the other day :)

  20. Thinking back on how great she looks in full skirts. This would have been great, in my opinion, with a beige/white/blue (or black) plaid skirt of a shorter length.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Why do I feel as if everyone is making a valid. Point. Yes- camel is not always the most flattering colour on her. Yes, (almost) head-to-toe the same colour can be too much and boring. Yes, Kate has a tendency to wear one style, swap basically her whole wardrobe around it and then moves on to the next. So it gets a bit boring. And while its is very relatable, on her level it's so far from sustainabilty it hurts. And I really dislike the t-shirt neckline as I feel the higher cut, while very on trend, is not flattering on her.
But I also kind of love the 70s theme that is going on. So much, that I can't write the outfit off as a fail.

  25. Firstly, thank you all for the feedback on the site.

When Her late Majesty passed, I was completely and entirely unprepared to change the name of 'Duchess Kate'. I am not tech-savvy at all. In hindsight, I simply would have left it. It's been very much a haphazard, time-consuming process with a great deal of negative unforeseen impact.

I am so sorry for the unpleasant experience you are all dealing with. I actually have ad block software and wasn't seeing any of it myself. My husband handled the "technical" side of the blog for years. Due to demands in his own career, I began outsourcing when I changed the site. I've reached out and plan to clear a day next week to get this sorted with my web designer, in addition to several other concerns, including the blog archive (posts from 2011-2016).

I will keep you all posted.
