The Cambridges in Cumbria: A Community Celebration & Concerns For The Farming Community

It was an away day for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they travelled to Cumbria to celebrate the resilience and spirit of rural and farming communities in the region.

Their first port of call was the market town of Keswick. There's been a great sense of anticipation ahead of the royal visit - the first to the town since 2009 when Prince Charles switched on the Christmas lights there. I found the nugget of information incredibly interesting; although there's quite a few members of the royal family active at present, there's so much to be done up and down the country - and across the UK and Commonwealth - a royal visit is very much a rarity in parts of England. I often say the value of these trips cannot be underestimated. A royal photographed at a place of business is invaluable, not to mention the level of awareness it can raise for small grassroots charities. It's an opportunity for the area to gain global exposure in the media, which lends support to tourism. Indeed, tourism is key to Cumbria's economy. Home to the English Lake District, which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017, the county welcomes millions each year.

Local town Councillor Alan Dunn told News & Star the visit was "great" for Keswick "It’s absolutely brilliant that Keswick is hosting their first visit to the county. It’s a privilege for us to have them." A spokesperson for St Herbert's primary school added: "It's great news for the town and the children".

Simon Perry shared a photo of the crowds before the royal arrival.

Keswick's history began in the Middle Ages when the area was conquered by the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria in the seventh century. The town was granted a charter for a market by Edward I in 1276 and has a history spanning more than seven centuries. The name is thought to mean "farm where cheese is made" or "cheese farm".

A panoramic view of Keswick and the surrounding area.

The Duke and Duchess joined a celebration focused on local individuals and organisations supporting families and communities across Cumbria. They spent time with volunteers including those from the local mountain rescue service, community first responders, young people trained as mental health first aiders and other organisations that have benefited from grants from the Cumbria Community Foundation.

The couple were delighted to see Max, Paddy and Prince Harry of Winterfell. We know William and Kate are fans of Games of Thrones and will have appreciated Harry's title.

It was something of a reunion as the Cambridges first met Max at the Buckingham Palace garden party last month. In 2006, Kerry Irving's car was hit by a truck leaving him with chronic neck and back pain. Assistance dog Max has been an invaluable friend to him throughout his journey.

More from the Mail Online:

'Mr Irving is now training his two other dogs, Paddy and Harry - full name is Prince Harry of Winterfells - to become therapy dogs. Speaking after his conversation with the Duke and Duchess today, Mr Irving said: 'When I said, "That’s Prince Harry", William laughed said, “Oh yes, this is the one you mentioned when you were down at the palace".'
Mr Irving continued: 'It was excellent seeing them and that they remembered us. They said that as they flew over the lakes they could see people sailing and kayaking and swimming. They said to me, "what you’re doing is getting people outdoors".'

The trio with Kerry this morning. Mr Irving and his wife Angela hold walks in support of local animal charities. Click here to view their Facebook Page.

Afterwards, it was time for a walkabout in Market Square.

William meeting locals.

The video below has excellent footage of the couple sampling cheese at a local stall and meeting locals.

From there, William and Kate travelled to a traditional sheep farm in Patterdale.

They met members of the Cumbrian farming community and discussed challenges farmers are dealing with at present. They learned about peer support networks supporting those in rural areas and diversification in the sector.

Kate admired a young girl's plait and said "I love your plaits. I tried to do a plait on Charlotte this morning but it didn't really work very well". The little ones were hoping Kate would come in her Princess Elsa dress. The Duchess smiled and said "I'm sorry. I came in my trousers and my coat because I'm going to be meeting some of your sheep".

William asked the group if Brexit was a major concern moving forward. Chris Ship was with the couple for the meeting and reported on the discussion. "In a No Deal Brexit, the worse case scenario for farmers, William and Kate were told in no uncertain terms, is ’absolutely dire’: 40% tariffs on sheep, a fall in exports, and an end to farming subsidies from the Common Agricultural Policy."

More from his ITV piece:

'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge aren’t here to cut some ribbon or open a new visitor centre - as royals are perhaps best known for - but they came to sit in a farm kitchen and listen to a group of farmers tell them what it’s like working high up in the hills of Cumbria.
Adam Day, from The Farmer Network said they were facing a perfect storm in the event of a No Deal Brexit. He spoke of the value of their animals halving, their European export market drying up and the subsidies from the controversial Common Agricultural Policy drying up and not being replaced. Farmers feel like they’ve been very low down on the list of priorities as politicians have tried - and failed - to find a way to leave the EU. "Brexit is the big worry", said Jimmy Brown, "it’s just the uncertainty." Currently, much of his lamb is exported to Germany, Spain and Italy. Jimmy’s dad Chris Brown added: "It’s always been difficult farming in the hills but we’ve always muddled through."

The couple got stuck in and offered a hand with sheep shearing.

William's turn..

Kensington Palace shared this very sweet photo of William and Kate petting the Browns' family dog Georgia.

The couple joined children for an environmental session on the Ullswater way.

Kate revealed she brought the children for a break in the Lake District over half-term. Despite their profile, it's great they can enjoy family getaways under the radar.  More from the Mail Online:

'During the nature walk The Duchess of Cambridge said she is immersing her three children in her love for the mountainous area of Britain's Lake District.
Kate, who has regularly holidayed in the area throughout her life, brought them for a family break in a recent half term holiday, and she told the crowd who came out to meet her and husband Prince William on Tuesday.
'She said that it was raining a lot and was a long way from their home in Norfolk, but they love it here,' one wellwisher lining the market square in the center of Keswick, Cumbria, said. 'She said that her children love coming here and walking in the fells,' Jack Mumberson, 11, from Ireby Church of England school, said 'She told us how nice the Lake District was and how lucky we were to live so close to the mountains.'

The video below is a wonderful wrap up of the visit. Kate discusses her trip with the children a few weeks ago, there's footage of the couple sheering sheep and gorgeous views from a hill above Ullswater.

For those planning a visit to the UK and considering spending a few days soaking up the scenic outdoors, Cumbria is a fantastic choice.

The mountainous rural county is home to an abundance of lakes and forests.

The Duchess opted for a smart casual outfit for the outdoorsy day in Cumbria.

The Duchess sported Troy London's Tracker Jacket (with thanks to Middleton Maven). The olive green £275 piece is described as: 'The ultimate throw-on summer jacket made from cotton drill. Beautifully finished inner with contrast binding in honey gold. The internal drawstring waist gives the option for a more tailored fit. Utilitarian pockets. Fastened with monogrammed bone buttons.' The Norfolk-based brand is run by sisters Rosie and Lucia Ruck Keene. Rosie is married to Prince George's godfather William van Cutsem, he and William are incredibly close friends.

Underneath, Kate wore her Fjallraven forest green Ovik sweater.

Kate wore her See by Chloe Leather-trimmed suede ankle boots. Made from dark-brown suede, they have tonal leather trims and logo-embossed heel tabs, and are set on a chunky tread sole.

And accessorised with her Kiki McDonough Lauren leaf earrings.

A closer look at Kate's pretty ponytail.

The Duchess also wore a white pie crust shirt and black skinny jeans.

For the final engagement, Kate changed into her Barbour Defence Jacket.

And Berghaus boots.

We'll see the Duchess tomorrow evening for the first annual gala dinner in recognition of Addiction Awareness Week, hosted by Action on Addiction and chef Skye Gyngell, and deliver a speech to celebrate the work of the charity.

Love the jacket and boots, and the pretty collar peeking out the top of her sweater. Looks like the same sweater she wore for the family Christmas photo.

Can’t wait to see the back of her hair!! I love it up like this!

Love this look but I have to ask- how many field jackets does one need? This is what- the fourth or fifth jacket that she owns like this? I mean- I love it obviously and clearly I’m just jealous lol

I agree!! How many field jackets does one need? haha ;-) I am bit like Kate when it comes to anoraks. I have three. But no field jackets lol... This is a nice one though!!! Yes, we are just jealous haha good one!!!!

    2. Is this a new one? I thought it was the same one she had on at the last casual event.

  4. This is her go-to casual outing uniform and I like it, although seeing as post-maternity leave she's done many more casual engagements maybe she could branch out a bit with the casual looks? Like the black skinny jeans are obviously a favorite of her but indigo jeans or khakis could just add a bit of variety to the look. And since it's spring, maybe a different color jacket? Not criticizing her look, just saying there's more than one way to dress for these casual engagements. It kind of reminds me when for years in her casual engagements she would inevitably wear only that boatneck shirt with those moccasins.

    1. It feels like when Kate finds a look she likes, she just sticks to it until something else catch her eye. I agree some variation on the theme will be nice.

    2. Her similar looking jackets are of different weights and fabric. Some are wintry and waterproof and warmly lined. This one is a unlined summer jacket of cotton. It does also come in khaki which might have been a subtle change. For the venue here, with real farmers and a chill in the air earlier, it is a classic look without being distracting from the purpose of the visit, which includes sheering sheep.

    3. I agree that I'd like to see her mix it up a bit...and to me the field jackets look all the same. But I do see that by switching up even similar looks, she boosts sales and helps the British fashion economy when people buy her looks. On a non-fashion note, I love that they sat down with the farmers and didn't shy away from tough conversations.

Looking at the two of them I was reminded of King George and Queen Elizabeth—they look as comfortable and happy together. Although the Queen Mum would probably be horrified by skinny jeans 😄😄

    1. I agree that the Queen Mum would not approve of skinny jeans lol. I wonder if/when Kate will be expected to phase them out? When she is Princess of Wales? When she is Queen? Of all the things she wears - and I love her casual style - her skinny jeans always strike me as the one fashion element that won't go with her into William's reign.

    2. Valerie, I think the Queen Mother would be horrified with ladies in pants of any type, especially for a royal engagement. But times change in dress. Glad that William and Kate are able to deliver the warmth that King George VI and Elizabeth delivered.

    3. Valerie in Arizona11 June 2019 at 18:42

The Queen Mum would also have expected a hat and gloves too. Although she was quite the country lady up in her Castle in Mey. But her mother in law was even more formal, Queen Mary. I was on board the Queen Mary 2 going to and from England in April-May and enjoyed looking at the Royals' photos and stores that were dotted around the ship. Don't think the younger Royals have been on any of the Cunard lines yet. Even though I am of the generation that dressed up as children, I am also the Woodstock Generation so I got a bit fussed about the "formal attire" rules for some evening dining nights on the QM2. Oh well, there are still people who like it. But times have changed and continue to change and I just like that K & W are so approachable and warm. Looking at the farmers around the table (and all the CAKES!!! yum!! looked like Kate had a box coming out of the farmhouse, maybe she was taking goodies home to the kiddies) it seemed they so appreciated William's directness in asking about Brexit because it seems their voice isn't really being heard in the general so-called "will of the people." Oh well, this isn't a political blog.

We were meant to go up to Windermere in mid-May (golly I might have bumped into Kate!) but my husband was so tired after a whirlwind train journey down to Spain and France that he begged that we just head for our friends in Somerset and spend our last week there. It was lovely but definitely next time it will be the Lake District!!

  11. I really love the colors. It looks like a rich gray, which I love, and the white ruffles are very crisp. I don't like soft ruffles so much, but the white really stands out and looks very clean. The gold earrings and buttons round out the triad of color. I would like to have that jacket!! :)

  12. NOW that I wrote all that, I can see that the gray is perhaps green instead. I'm a bit disappointed, but she still looks just great. Looking forward to the visit and all the details!

  13. We were in Cumbria last summer - doing some sailing (Swallows and Amazons being a family favourite), some walking, craft-beer appreciating and tasting local delectables. Gorgeous scenery, lovely atmosphere, great hospitality. Yes, it rained a bit but it has to stay green somehow! Fantastic family holiday. Looks like Cambridges had a good time too - I hope their children get to visit while young too.

  18. This is just a wonderful trip! Since Elizabeth Bennett mentioned the lake district, I have been so curious! It's just beautiful. We had goats, Angora goats, for a long time, so the shearing and cheese is very familiar and appreciated. I think Kate wore the perfect outfit -- shearing sheep can be messy, although I know she didn't have to do one by herself. This was just fascinating to see the town and the countryside. Thank you, Charlotte!

Although I have lived in New York and Boston, and much much prefer those areas, we are currently in Texas, and I recently learned the unbelievable and horrifying fact that there is only one natural lake in Texas. I'm sure the people in England would be horrified as well.

What an incredible post Charlotte. So fascinating to read about the history there and current worries with a potential No Deal Brexit. I applaud William and Kate for their interest and empathy in their choice of events. It feels like the future of the Monarchy is secure in their hands. They are a gorgeous couple.

On the fashion front - I don't like anything about this. I'm struggling with the combinations both style and color. The jacket is very stylish but the blouse collar is out of place. The black pants with brown boots. The black pants with olive jacket. Such dark uninspiring colors for spring. I agree with those who suggested a casual look "rut". I would have styled this outfit with a crisp white button down top, coral argyle vest and khaki jeggings. Same boots and jacket.

    1. I think this is a great look for Kate, from the lovely ponytail, leaf earrings (perfect in a nature setting), make-up, pie crust collar (adding a touch of femininity), to the crisp tailoring of the jacket and down to her practical boots.

I don't mind the jeans. She may as well show off her fantastic athletic figure. There may come a time when she is Princess of Wales and she can no longer get away with wearing something this casual and form fitting for an official engagement.

    2. I hope the trend of skinny jeans and jackets are continued when at events that are appropriate such as this one today.....who wants to see Kate dressing like an old lady. Elizabeth looked 20 years older that her actual age all the time whether it be her hair or boxy clothes. It's 2019 for goodness sake. Plus she has great long legs

    3. I don’t think her clothing will change much as her position change (it will of cause change as she gets older) but she might be doing more formal events and less of this kind of event where skinny’s and boots are the way to go.

  25. I don’t think one can overestimate the value of away days like this. Not only is it great for tourism, but it makes the people of the area feel noticed. And while the future king might not be able to do much about your problems it must be amazing to sit around a table and tell him about it.
And lets be honest, this is a prime example of “royal politics”. Neither William and Kate gave their opinion on Brexit (I actually read articles “claiming” them for both sides) but what they did is they gave a human face to the problems, reminding everybody that Brexit is not merely a boardgame, it affects people’s livelihoods.

I loved the video of the children with Kate. How natural and lovely she is with children.

Kate is my favorite royal to watch, so don't get me wrong when I say: I HATE these boots. I hate them. If she threw them in the trash, I would understand. I feel like the look would have been so much more polished with either her LeChameau boots or any other boot really. These boots for me are too clunky and big. I am also tired of the same jacket. Full boots, the rest of the outfit and a different jacket would have been more to my liking-or no jacket at all. Just the pretty sweater with the sweet top underneath it.
It IS nice however, to see people wearing jackets though. It was 104 degrees (40 degrees Celsius!) here yesterday and already 95 at 10 am. Id really like to be wearing a jacket right now.

  31. I remember my first visit to Cumbria many years ago, attending the summer Wordsworth Conference in Grasmere, and we were lectured by the leader of the hikes, "You must have proper boots. I shall not tolerate students in those American tennis THINGS." Being poor students, we sneaked along in our "American tennis things" anyway, but the next time we went, we all had managed to afford a pair of boots for the walks. Even though I got away with hiking to the top of a U.S. western mountain over 11,000 feet above sea level in canvas/leather running shoes, the terrain in the Lake District is much more rugged and you really are in danger of turning your ankle anywhere if you don't have proper hiking boots. All this is to say that Kate chose the right footwear for the two different kinds of activities she did. She looked great, and I'm so pleased that they drew more attention to that area. I've returned there a number of times and love it more than almost anywhere on earth. Maybe more than anywhere!

    1. it is fascinating to me that the term is 'walk'. To me walk is what you do on a smooth, flat surface. Terrain that is rugged and requires hiking boots would not be what I would refer to as a 'walk'

  32. Although I usually don't appreciate drop earrings with casual clothes, I think Kate manages to pull it off every time! What amazes me about the duchess is her versatility. She can do regal princess, down to earth duchess and everything in between with a warmth and compassion that shines through. She dresses for the occasion and I think 99% of the time nails it. Thank you for your coverage of all the engagements she does Charlotte.

  36. What a nice engagement. I think it’s important that the young royals spend more time in the UK and especially in the rural parts. This is their kingdom after all. If they want to keep it, they should put more time into it. I know the senior royals do but the younger ones have a better chance with the younger generations.
I like her outfit and I really love her ponytail. I was about to comment that she could try braids for events like this when it caught my eye.
It’s going to be interesting if she will keep the skinny jeans when they move up in hierarchy. I don’t see why not as skinny jeans are now worn by many people (even older ones) but Kate might feel differently.

    1. Hello Rachel,

Coincidentally, ITV's royal reporter Chris Ship was talking about upcoming royal tours last night. He said he's expecting a tour for the Cambridges later this year. He understands it will take place after the Sussexes return from Africa (which I believe is some point in October). The media don't have any details yet, so it's likely in the planning stages at the moment. It looks like a late October/November tour potentially.

I thought we might see a big Commonwealth tour over the summer as it would be convenient with the children on holidays. George and Charlotte will have a half-term break in late October, so I imagine we're possibly looking at those dates, depending on whether or not the children join them. It's very possible with Brexit, they'll be deployed to European countries. We could see a tour very similar to the Norway/Sweden visit.

  39. Love everything about this look, including the change in jacket and boots. She was totally appropriate for the occasion, fit in well with the local people, and transitioned easily from walking the market, to walking with the children, to shearing the sheep. Her first look was a little dressier jacket, and worked well with William's sport jacket. I love that she has such a variety of field jackets, don't mind that they are in the same family of colors, because she is able to mix up her wardrobe and not make it seem like completely new 'outfits' each time. I think the weather in England warrants lighter and heavier jackets. There is a picture of her and William walking along a shore in Wales that is a favorite of mine, and I love it because they look so country casual. It looks like William and Kate are wearing the same jackets for the second half of this engagement. They match very well in many ways.

I also was impressed to hear she had visited the area with her children and William, I love that! I can only imagine the whole family in their field jackets and hiking boots trekking all over the place. She definitely puts into practice what she believes about children and the outdoors, and leads by example. The Lake District looks absolutely beautiful, what a great place to take your family. Just another spot in England to put on my list to visit, just beautiful. cc

    1. Maybe it is a South African thing, because I also struggle. But what I found interesting is how much better I could understand her in the Blue Peter clip where she is talking to the kids and not really aware of the cameras.
My guess is she is really selfconscious about speaking, especially on camera, so she try extra hard, with the opposite effect.

She looks absolutely wonderful from the waist up! love the jacket, sweater and the ruffle peaking out. great earings and hair. wonderful smile. I love the first pair of boots and wish I had them. not a fan of the second pair of boots, maybe its the material? they seem so 80's to me! lol. and as always I wish someone would burn those pants:) I just cant take folks seriously when they are in skin tight clothes!!

  44. I am a 65 year old grandmother and wear skinny jeans all the time.I assure you people take me very seriously as I have run big companies. Also I am very slim and trim and my husband family ECT think I look great in them.In a modern world we need to focus less on clothes and more on deeds which is what I think is what Kate does.
