The Cambridges Visit Ukrainian Cultural Centre

Amid the ongoing devastation in Ukraine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London.

Kensington Palace said the visit was planned to meet as many people at the centre as possible and "to learn about the extraordinary efforts being made to support Ukrainians in the UK and across Europe".

There's been quite a bit of discussion regarding royal involvement. In this situation, it is no longer about navigating politics but a humanitarian crisis unfolding day after day before our eyes. An unprovoked atrocity, and my heart goes out to the people of Ukraine. This terrible invasion has cost too many lives, and its impact will be felt for generations to come. It is incumbent, I feel, for those in public service to show their support for the Ukrainian people and speak out. Prince Charles recently described Russia's aggression as "brutal" and "terrible". We are firmly in a place where this statement is merely fact, not overstepping geopolitical lines.

William revealed the children have been asking about the war: "Ours have been coming home asking all about it. They are obviously talking about it with their friends at school." He said he is "choosing his words carefully" when discussing it with the children.

William and Kate brought granola bars and brownies from Kensington Palace. The Duchess said, "It’s the least we could do. I think we need to come and help out here properly. Give you some respite."

The couple met members of the Ukrainian community and volunteers. They discussed the work undertaken at the centre and viewed the incredible amount of donations.

Kensington Palace said, "Their Royal Highnesses had the opportunity to speak with Saleh Saeed, CEO of the Disasters Emergency Committee, to learn more about the ongoing Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and how best the UK public can continue to support Ukraine. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the British public, the DEC have now raised over £120 million for its member charities working on the ground. With the effects of this conflict to be felt for weeks and months to come, this funding will support Ukrainians across Europe whose lives have been changed irrevocably right now and in the difficult weeks ahead."

'During their visit, they spoke to chief executive of DEC Saleh Saeed about the humanitarian appeal which has so far raised more than £120million.

His key message was that the humanitarian crisis is set to last for months, possibly years, no matter when the fighting stops.

He said the most important thing the British public can do to help to send money, rather than other items.

“The British people have been incredibly generous. They have given £132 million over the last six days,” he said. “But this is not going to be over soon. The most important thing is for people to give more money so that charities and the people of Ukraine can buy what they need with dignity.”

A brief video released by Kensington Palace.

A longer piece with additional footage from the engagement.

William and Kate posed for a group photo before leaving.

Kate's McQueen sweater is described as: "It's knitted from soft cashmere for a close fit and has ribbed trims". It's available in several colours for £520 at Net-A-Porter.

The Duchess sported her Jigsaw trousers.

I'm leaving you with a deeply moving speech by Inna Prystaiko, wife of Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK. Inna attended an International Women's Day event at Clarence House with the Duchess of Cornwall, who comforted her afterwards. "Today there are no smiles and no peace, just horror and sorrow in the eyes of every Ukrainian woman, mother and wife. Now we have to count the death toll of our people and watch their frightened, crying children who are forced to flee their native land with their mothers and sisters, leaving their fathers to defend our country."

It's been confirmed we'll see the Cambridges and other royals at the Commonwealth Day service on Monday.

  1. Well here we go again, a other senseless war which causes death pain and lots of hunger and god know what else. I still struggle with the question, why can't people respect each other and the Borders between Countries, and be tolerant towards others, of their believes traditions and plain and simple. The Right To Live. This bad situation, hopefully brings out the best in people, at least in some. The visit of the Cambridges show's they care. Thanks to every who is willing to help. This blue sweater looks great on Kate.

    1. This is no longer political. Its become a humanitarian crisis.

    2. I’m so truly saddened by this comment. This is not a “political opinion”, this is the greatest humanitarian tragedy that Europe has faced since the 2nd world war. Her Majesty, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall have all pledged their personal contributions to this unfolding crisis in the past few days. To see the pain in the faces of all of them, shows the depth of their compassion. The Queens subtle placement of heartwarming flowers in the colours of the Ukrainian flag bought floods of tears to my eyes. Like William said “we feel helpless”, and we do, what little we can do by way of donations, pales when we see the heartbreak that the Ukrainian people are facing. The fear, the loss, the destruction, the enormity of this catastrophe is overwhelming. I’m thankful for the kindness of William & Catherine, and I know this visit will help increase donations at this increasingly difficult time for the Ukrainian people.

    3. It is a humanitarian crisis and in a time of need, support and helping does not indicate a political opinion, but rather a compassion for our fellow man. If ever a united front was needed from a humanitarian perspective, now is the time. The First Lady of Ukraine has sent out an appeal for the children of Ukraine.

    4. Assisting war victims in one way or another is something royals have always done. That's not expressing a "political opinion"; it's simply providing moral support.

In any case, what they're supposed to stay out of is British politics and policy. They can certainly express their concern about a crisis in another nation as long as they don't try to tell the British government what to do about it.

That's a lovely shade of blue in the sweater. It seems to be one of the Duchess's favorite colors, so I'm not surprised she had a sweater in this shade available to wear on a mission to the Ukrainian community.

    5. One day I’d love to hear someone’s definition of political as it relates to the royal family. I’d wager a guess there’s nothing official and everyone has a different threshold for “political”. Also there is nothing political about what is happening in Ukraine. To stay neutral as some would apparently prefer is to join the oppressor. Period. Either you stand for something or what’s the point.

    6. It's just overwhelming. Imagine just one family that is able to reach the border -- they lose their home and their workplace and possibly the men in the family. Perhaps their pets. All possessions. And 43 million people are affected in some way. Then the incredible destruction to buildings. I have never seen the world come together this way though. I hope a solution is found soon that allows it to all stop.

    7. To cut it short: they are not. Easy as that. Apart from the Monarch, everyone has the right to speak out, show specific support or vote. They have chosen not to for a long time. But many of the causes they support have always had a political element to them. It’s not as controversial as part make it out to be.
The only thing I will say is this- while we all wish for a specific end to this, no one knows what’s going to happen. Charles and Wiliam will be monarchs at one point and whatever they say and do publicly will follow them into those roles. That’s the only thing they need to hold in the back of their head.

    8. I think they have been treading very carefully. And staying in an humanitarian not political stance. Not only because of what C (5:18) explains, their place above UK politics but because I think they have clear instructions from the government. There is a definite wish not to escalate, no intervention in the conflict. They do what they can to help, they are horrified, but are as constrained in what they can do as all the governments in the world are. I am sure they have checked this visit beforehand with UK foreign affairs.

  3. It's good to keep Ukraine in the forefront of the news. I think the only hope for this situation is for every aspect to be constantly in the news -- Zelenskyy is not letting anyone forget what is happening hour by hour and the world needs that. I hope a solution arrives soon so that people can try to rebuild their lives.

    2. Do you mean to say interest is already fading away in the US? In Europe it is not only forefront but it completely dominates the news.

    3. Sadly, some people here simply do not care about anyone other than themselves and the next new shiny thing on the internet. The TV show Shark Tank was not shown last week to instead show a special on the situation and people complained that they did not care about "that comedian." I used to watch Colbert's late night show before the election because his humor was just what I needed to cope with the political situation here but now he has jokes about the war and Putin and it's not OK with me. I'm afraid that being on a different continent makes some people in the US very callous. However, just yesterday, the city of Dallas voted to divest the city's investments in anything connected with Russia. Of course, it does affect us, more than wars occurring elsewhere, because (aside from being an incredibly heart-breaking situation) there is the danger of the attack extending into other countries.

    4. I had to drive to a meeting this evening and in going and returning a different way, I saw several homes in my neighborhood lit with blue and yellow lights in solidarity with Ukraine. So we do have support and ongoing interest at different levels around the U.S. (I live in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah.)

    5. I should also add, we have several humanitarian projects going to aid Ukrainian refugees--gathering donations of money and things that are needed through vetted agencies. Trying to help even if only a little. Kudos to Kate and William for their support.

Ditto, G.A.! Thank you for the example of what compassion means, Marta! There is also a huge wave of solidarity here, people are really trying to help. We have about 200.000 refugees here at the moment. It is Poland though where the majority of Ukrainians are seeking refuge.

    5. Currently there are more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees in Poland. This war is devastating. The Russian media shows that Russian society supports the war. The EU countries need to stop doing business with Russia, otherwise the war will not end. Anna, Poland

  7. It was great to see the Duke and Duchess showing support for Ukraine 🇺🇦 again today. You can see the sadness in Kates eyes and concern on Williams at times. I know they made a donation but bringing something home made today was very kind. The world is very sad at the moment. Over 2,500 have arrived here in Ireland so far and its mostly children. It's absolutely heartbreaking to see what is happening. The only good thing to come from this is, to see the love and support being given from most countries. 🇺🇦 ♥. S. ☺

I know many don't like Kate with longer hair, but I am one of the few who SWOON over it. I think it is gorgeous.

My thoughts are with Ukraine and their people every day. They have fought with such vigor and patriotism. I admire each and every citizen so much. When I think of the families torn apart it breaks my heart in half. When I think of the children having their childhood stolen from them, it breaks my heart again. What a horrendous time we are living in.

    1. I am with you about her hair Tammy! Love it long and it looks particularly good straight with this outfit.

It cannot be easy to attend these events as a mother and know what the Ukranian children and families are going through. I read a story where a 10 year old boy made it to the border of Poland on his own. His mother could not leave as she was caring for her mother who could not move, imagine having to make that choice and have so much hope to rely on the kindness of strangers. Fortunately, he made it and was cared for until their relatives could come and get him, but still heartbreaking!

  10. As I have commented more around the Ukrainian /political element above - here a mere look on fashion:
I don’t know if it was really necessary to wear this shade of blue to this engagement. This was a very obvious support moment for Ukraine and the people. Not her sporting the colours at an unrelated event. No colour choice can be as impactful as actually showing up. Men almost never do it or only extremely subtle and no one thinks it’s important if they don’t or a nice touch when they do. And why not choose yellow? Skies and fields - it’s not as if the blue is the more symbolic one in that case. I know she likes her blues, but this particular shade is not flattering on her- so maybe going with a yellow piece might have been better choice. Looking back, she always looked great in yellow (but she had darker hair then so maybe it wouldn’t have worked now). The short hemline with the long, wide pants are in general not exactly her best silhouette. Something we have talked about a lot here.
So, good job showing up, but a miss in the fashion department from mere looks to dressing for support.

  11. First of, my prayers go to Ukraine and its people. Just days ago I was able to meet two refugees, a wonderful mom and her cute son, and help them out taking them to shop for necessities that they had to leave behind to save their lives, hopefully contributing a little to the huge wave of solidarity with Ukraine. It was one of the strongest experiences I've had.

I hope Kate will come to the center again to do some volunteering as she said! She usually keeps her promises (e.g. fulfilling little Mila's dream to see a princess in pink). I would love her to team up with Sophie who is a very experience volunteer.

On the fashion note, although the sweater is nowhere near moderately priced, I like it. It looks vibrand and suits Kate extremely well. The pants, I'm not a fan. Ugh. They kind of bring the whole outfit down. Kate's hair looks fabulous straighter like this and she looks so youthful!

  12. Thank you, Charlotte, for this important piece. I'm so pleased that the Cambridges, The Queen, and other royal family members are giving support to the Ukrainian people. I thought the DoC was dressed entirely appropriately for a such an occasion. She looks beautiful in blue.I even like the trousers on this occasion.

    1. I agree with you Anon, very happy that the royals are lending their support to help the Ukranian people. Also, think that the Duchess looked perfect, very understated, not over dressed, a very casual business look that blended well with everybody else in attendance. The blue sweater was the right touch and the home baked goods heartfelt! Well done.

  13. I don't believe there ever was or is big interest in the USA. This horrible war and the needs of the Ukrainian people, is so badly miss handled. Sadly to say, people have a very short memory or compassion to the needs of victims of war. I read on a mural in my hometown. They gave their lives, their sacrifice should be a warning to us all. Today I read the Inflation and high prices at the Petrol Station is do the Putin's war, go and figure this one out. No one should ever have to make a choice, to either feed your family or buy meds if needed, pay rent or fill you car with gas, to go to work. Unless this horror happen to them, some just don't care , sad but true.

    1. That simply isn't true. There is MASSIVE interest in the US. I can't imagine where you are to be saying such a thing.

    2. I think there is much more interest in the US than there has been in people suffering in other parts of the world, but there are still many people who care only about their own pleasures. I am very happy to see the government leaders acting almost completely as a unit, though, in the unprecedented response.

    3. This makes no sense. The invasion of Ukraine is dominating all news and discussion. I don’t know where you live in the US but where I live it’s absolutely the primary topic at the moment. There are many people in the US who care about the war and the victims. A large group of us are descended from Eastern European people and care a great deal. It’s dominating the news here.

    5. There are several clues in anonymous post as to where they get their news (the people who create controversy for the clicks).

There is a huge interest in what is going on in Ukraine and the correlation to the false information that Putin spins is very similar to the extremist conspiracy laden statements here in the US and other countries pushed by people who are really clueless.

I cry every day as I watch and read the news coming out of Ukraine and see the needless destruction of their homeland and the cruelty of the attacks meant to not only devastate infrastructure services but citizen morale. Every image is heartbreaking.

Regarding Catherine's attire for this event, I believe it is completely appropriate. I love the vibrant blue sweater, it is gorgeous and looks so comfortable to wear.

    7. I was the original Anon poster here about lack of support in the US. I get my news from the major networks, NPR/PBS, the local town website, and then misc comments I happen upon online. I also live in a state that doesn't believe in reality. I know there is a lot of interest -- more than for any other group of people being persecuted -- the major cities are divesting of Russian interests, local stores selling Ukrainian goods are overwhelmed, etc. When I wrote that, I was particularly struck by comments about people's unhappiness with a TV show being preempted for a special on the situation in Ukraine. How lucky are we that we can sit in a home and simply watch TV?

    3. I to will be disappointed not to see The Duke and Duchess tonight. Considering what is going on, I think a very good move by them. Not a good look to be dressing up for a night out, for such a high profile Royal couple. If it's because The Duke is still pissed with the BBC, good for him. What they did to his late Mother Diana Princess of Wales, was unforgiveable. It had a huge effect on her mental health, her relationships and quite possibly changed the course of her life. Things became very bitter between her and Charles, while she was being told lies to earn her trust. How upsetting that must of been for their young children. Then to find out as Adults that it was all lies. What was said about Tiggy was just sick. Yes the BBC said sorry and paid out money but that won't undo the damage done. Prince William spoke out very strongly on the BBC in defence of his Mother and I agree with every word. Shame on them. S. ☺

    4. @Anonymous - I can only partially agree. “The BBC” has apologised and payed up as the business that let it happen. The people working for them now, mostly have nothing to do with it or those practices. If the company truly does better now, there is no need to shun them, even though you might not like or trust them. It’s a mere business relation. Just like we don’t abolish the whole monarchy because of a handful of black sheep or for some questionable meddling in politics. I get his sentiment but the BBC is an integral part of British society and the discourses held. I wouldn’t want to miss it and only rely on the rest for quality journalism and in his position I do expect him to be able to maintain a working relationship with them. Just as he will have to engage with dictators and questionable HoS’s or UK politicians. Speaking out so strongly against what they did is absolutely fine though.

  15. I think that was a very sweeping statement to make on 🇺🇸. I live in Ireland and I am watching news from all over the world at the moment. CNN are reporting on everything as it happens. I can't imagine anyone who has a heart not been upset over this. America has been very generous to the people of Ukraine. Children here are bringing supplies to schools to send to Ukraine and Poland who has opened their borders. Most businesses are donating and work places are collecting money and supplies to send. I'd be surprised if most countries around the world aren't doing the same. Pray for peace and all who are suffering. S. ☺
