'The Duke and Duchess consider it an honour to be visiting Canada – the largest Commonwealth Realm – in the year of the Queen's 90th birthday. British Columbia and Yukon are among the most beautiful places in the world and home to many indigenous communities. The tour will see them take in everything from the bustling global city of Vancouver – population 2.5 million - to the remote and beautiful Bella Bella, home to less than 2,000 people. Along the way they will meet as many Canadians as possible, and will help celebrate Canada's First Nations communities, its arts and culture, pristine and beautiful environment, and its compassionate and innovative charitable sector.
This visit is a chance for the Duke and Duchess to deepen their relationship with a country that they will visit many times over the course of their lives.'

Readers will recall nine-month-old George stole the show during the Australia/New Zealand tour in 2014 at events such as a playdate at Government House and a memorable visit to Taronga Zoo.
The family will travel with a staff of 12, plus a team of Scotland Yard security guards. This will include Nanny Maria, four press officers including communications secretary Jason Knauf. William and Kate's private secretaries Miguel Head and Rebecca Deacon will be on hand, as well as Kate's hairdresser Amanda Cook-Tucker, a tour secretary, operations manager and a PA, likely the newly engaged Natasha Archer. Sir David Manning, who serves as a mentor/advisor to the young royals, will not be travelling on this tour. Below we see Amanda, assistant Sophie Agnew and Natasha on the Tiger's Nest hike during the India/Bhutan tour.

Saturday, 24 September
The Cambridges will arrive in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia on the afternoon of Saturday, 24 September. The family will travel with the Royal Canadian Air Force and be greeted at Victoria Airport before moving to Government House - which will serve as their base throughout the tour. George and Charlotte will stay there with Nanny Maria and William and Kate will travel back and forth as their schedule permits.
From there, William and Kate will travel to British Columbia's Parliament Buildings where they will officially begin their tour by paying respects at Victoria's Cenotaph and unveil a new plaque paying tribute to the veterans of Canada's involvement in the Afghanistan conflict.
The official welcoming ceremony will then get underway with an honour guard and speeches. Parliament is located right on Victoria's waterfront, and the official welcome will be open to the public. It will give the Duke and Duchess a chance to say hello to the people of Canada just hours after touching down in the country. Following this event William and Kate will return to Government House where they will have meetings with senior Canadian leaders.
Next, the Cambridges will travel to the Downtown East Side of Vancouver to meet the inspirational team at Sheway, a charity that has achieved remarkable things for mothers who are battling addiction. Where Sheway is located "has been identified as the poorest neighbourhood in Vancouver, if not in Canada. It is known for its sex and drug trade, violence and crime, alcohol and drug use, substandard housing and high rate of HIV-related illness". The Palace added: "The link between addiction and family breakdown is something that has been a major priority of the Duchess's charitable work."
From there, they will travel to the Immigration Services Society of British Columbia where they will meet staff and volunteers who support over 25,000 recent migrants to Canada each year, including some of the 30,000 who have arrived in Canada over the last year from UNHCR camps that are supporting those who have fled the war in Syria.
The Duke and Duchess will then attend an event celebrating young leaders in Canadian arts, music, sport, charity, business, and film. The final engagement of the day will see the Duke and Duchess learn more about the first responders who work together to keep Vancouverites safe as they enjoy life in their city. They will visit the Kitsilano Coastguard Station in Vanier park and learn about the round the clock operation to support people who get into trouble in the waters that surrounds this coastal city.
Monday, 26 September
Monday promises to be one of the most beautiful days of the tour with the Cambridges travelling to the Great Bear Rainforest - the world's largest temperate rainforest.

From there they will be guided by young people through Bella Bella to the community centre where a youth performance will take place. The royals will then travel to nearby Mcloughlin Bay where the rainforest will be officially committed to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy during a brief ceremony. It should be a fantastic day and a memorable one for the Duke and Duchess who will love the opportunity to explore the area.
The Cambridges will return to Victoria, for a reception hosted by the province of British Columbia at Government House. I would image we'll likely see Kate in a cocktail dress for this one.
Tuesday, 27 September
Tuesday is another busy day on the itinerary. William and Kate will fly to Kelowna, a city in the beautiful Okanagan Valley. They will visit the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia. The Duke and Duchess will have a chance to meet with students and the wider community before watching an exhibition match with the campus' nationally ranked women's volleyball team. We know the Duchess is a dab hand when it comes to the game, so perhaps we'll even see her join in for practice.
Next, William and Kate will visit the 'Taste of British Columbia' festival at Mission Hill Winery. The Okanagan region is producing world-class wine, cheese and food, and the Duke and Duchess will have a chance to sample some of the province's best offerings. They will also meet with local young people who are learning about potential careers in food and agriculture.
The royals will then fly to Whitehorse, Yukon. When they arrive in the early evening, they will be greeted by members of the Canadian Rangers, the military branch that provides a presence in the north of the country. Later that evening they will watch a cultural performance at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. They will stay in Whitehorse overnight.
Wednesday, 28 September
The Duke and Duchess will have a real chance to see the natural beauty of Yukon and to learn about its people. The day will begin with a visit to the MacBride Museum, where they will learn about Yukon's history. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the telegraph office, now part of the museum, in 1959. It's quite special to think almost sixty years later their grandson and his wife are visiting and continuing the tradition.
Next up, the Cambridges will enjoy a colourful and fun party on Main Street, Whitehorse with plenty of arts, music and food. From there, it is thought (although not confirmed) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie will join the couple for the day.
Carcross is a small town of less than 300 people 70 kilometres from Whitehorse on the Klondike Highway. At the Carcross Commons they will have a traditional welcome from the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and will be given a tour of the recently completed buildings and public spaces there, and will have the chance to say hello to the local community.
The Duke and Duchess will then travel a short distance to the beautiful Montana Mountain where they will visit what must be one of the world's most picturesque destinations for mountain biking. Afterwards, William and Kate will head back to Whitehorse Airport and back to George and Charlotte in Victoria.
Thursday, 29 September
Thursday is one to mark on your calendars if hoping to see George and Charlotte! They are expected to join their parents for a children's party in the grounds of Government House. A group of military families have been invited to share what looks to be a lovely morning. I imagine it will be something similar to the playdate George attended in New Zealand. I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of the children's personalities, especially Charlotte's, as this will be our first opportunity to 'get to know her'.
The Duke and Duchess will spend the remainder of the day privately with the children.
Friday, 30 September
William and Kate will have the privilege of visiting Haida Gwaii, the archipelago on the northern coast of British Columbia that is home to the Haida Nation. It is a remote, but very special place. When the couple arrive at Skidegate, they will transfer to a traditional Haida canoe and will help to paddle around to the beach at the Haida Heritage Centre and Museum, where they will be officially welcomed. Inside the centre they will be addressed by the President of the Haida Nation and see a cultural performance by around thirty local children.
Next, they will open the new Haida Gwaii Hospital and Care Centre. Before leaving Haida Gwaii, the Duke and Duchess will join youths from the Skidegate Youth Centre where they will enjoy world-class fishing on the beautiful waters of the Hectate Strate.

The final day of the tour is another busy one beginning with a visit to Cridge Centre for the Family – one of Victoria's most well known charitable institutions. The centre provides a range of services, including childcare, youth outreach, and support for women who have experienced domestic violence.
The Duke and Duchess will then then visit a local café where they will meet with families that have been supported by the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre, one of British Columbia's leading mental health charities. The Palace stated: "This focus on signposting and information provision chimes closely with the work that the Duke and Duchess are focusing on along with Prince Harry through their Heads Together campaign."
It promises to be another fantastic tour with plenty of memorable moments. There's clearly a focus on meeting people and supporting local organisations in areas the royals are passionate about such as mental health. There are several opportunities for the couple to explore the scenic beauty of the area, and the children's party is a lovely relaxed engagement for George and Charlotte to participate in. William and Kate will spend their first full day of the tour in Vancouver, visiting several of the city's important organisations. The royals will travel from Victoria to Vancouver by float plane. The Palace noted: "Float planes are the quickest way to travel between the two cities and are one of the real symbols of this part of the world.
They will land at the harbour in the heart of Vancouver where they will receive a civic welcome in Jack Poole Plaza located by the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. The Plaza is named after the late Jack Poole, who was a key player behind the success of the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics held in Vancouver. This welcome will allow the Duke and Duchess to get an immediate sense of Vancouver's energy and dynamism.

'I am pleased to say that the Premier of British Columbia has today announced that Great Bear has been named as Canada's commitment to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy. Launched at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, in 2015, the QCC is a unique network of forest conversation initiatives, which involves all 53 countries of the Commonwealth.
The QCC present a rare opportunity to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats, forests. By creating a pan-Commonwealth network of forest conservation products, the QCC will mark Her Majesty the Queen’s service to the Commonwealth while conserving indigenous forests for future generations.
Immediately on arrival at Bella Bella airport the Duke and Duchess will transfer to a float plane where they will be given an aerial tour of a section of the vast rainforest. Then they will board a tall-ship operated by the Sail and Life Training Society, a charity that uses the power of sailing to give young people skills and direction in their lives. Later that afternoon the Duke and Duchess end their tour by taking part in a public official departure ceremony at Victoria Harbour Airport. They will then board a float plane and will have a brief tour of the southern tip of Vancouver Island before departing Canada with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The itinerary concluded with the following:
'The Duke and Duchess are delighted with the programme that has been put together for this tour. They cannot wait to get to Canada and start learning about new parts of a country that will play such an important part of their lives for many years to come. I'm so excited they're going to visit Vanier Park - I go running there all the time. Maybe I'll have to stop by and see them :) All of the other destinations are beautiful as well, they've chosen a great itinerary.

DeleteI don't see Kate doing any solo tours until the children are older. She is a mummy first as they say. And if the rumors are true (ha ha) they want another baby and hope to be pregnant soon. So any tours in 2017 will jot happen. But only time will tell.

DeleteThey might announce a third pregnancy in January or February. They tend to make babies after returning home from these major trips. We might have a baby in August right after Pippa's wedding.

I live in Victoria, and I live only 3 blocks from Government House, where they will be staying! DeleteThe CBC will most likely give extensive coverage during their time here. They always do when the Royals visit. Arrivals and departures of all events and during events if they have access. Also on this tour there will probably be plenty of analysis from various organizations.

What a fab schedule. We were lucky enough to spend 3 weeks in British Columbia and the Yukon this summer, including Bella Bella. I sm sure the Cambridges will be as smitten as we were. So looking forward to seeing the whole family together.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is a great scheduel. The visuals with the nature will be great PR for the country. (The people that complain about that touristy stuff miss the point. During the Bhutan visit I saw sooooo many people saying they put it on their "must visit list" etc. and visiting these touristy things, especially with this particular high profile couple, is exactly within their role of promoting the area!)

DeleteWhat a great schedule, it looks like an excellent tour. I went to Vancouver about 10 years ago and fell in love with it and I'm sure they will too. That part of the country is just stunning (The Pacific Northwest of the US is just as amazing too).

I guess this is more of an outdoors type of tour, so we probably won't see Kate in formal attire, except for that one reception. I hope our Canadian friends have a chance to see them and give us a birds eye view.

Given that type of conduct and the fact Camilla remains very unpopular and even more ignored - if I were William and Kate - I might stay out of politeness but would treat any suggestions from her cautiously. Her history is not good.

DeleteApparently Jessica and 0855 have not been following the "Camilla dialogues" over the years on this blog, nor do they seem to be aware of Camilla's doings in Diana's life. Nonetheless, I understood immediately what you meant and I agree. For example, should Charlotte cry more than once in an afternoon it could be leaked to the media and exaggerated that Charlotte is unruly and undisciplined, etc. Don't worry though, for to William and Kate, two savvy young adults who know Camilla's history, Camilla should hold no threat. And they will protect their children accordingly.
Jessica and 8:55, I don't know how old you are or how long you've followed the BRF, but if you are aware of her history, then there is no need to ask. On the other hand, if you ARE aware of it and dismiss it, then no reply here will matter. There is so much information all over the internet if you do wish to do your own reading on it... :)

DeleteThis was an important visit. The most important matter for the Royal Family is that there is a smooth transition of Charles to king. The survival of the monarchy depends on this happening. This visit was a statement that Charles and William and their families get on well enough to spend a week together under the same roof, that the Queen has a good relationship with Kate and that the Middleton family are welcome in the Royal Family. One has to remember that the Queen spent a reasonable amount of time with her mother's family, who proably would not have been good enough if it had been thought at the time of the marriage that her father was remotely likely to become King.
DeleteAs for Charles, I think some things were a bit tough for him. He lost his mother and gained a Queen when he was Prince George's age. And then he was the guinea pig in the new age royalty, the first to go to school, and boarding school and he was more sensitive and less resilient as a child than Anne was. He was also the first future King not to have a semi arranged marriage. I have often wondered what would have happened if he had had the courage to tell Dianna exactly what he was offering - a job as queen and mother with great wealth and position, perhaps as a friend and shared partnership but not as a lover. Would Dianna have accepted and would history have changed.
If one takes out the personal life missteps Prince Charles has achieved quite a lot in his life and has been in lots of ways well ahead of his tme in matters that are now mainstream. His cause was not helped by the fact that he was a nerd in a generation where it was cool to be both flamboyant and outrageous. I think history will judge him well.
However Camilla is another matter. She has behaved as one would expect from a woman from a family whose women had been mistresses of Royalty. The hell she put her own family through is unforgivable. I don't know that she will be judged well, despite all the effort she is putting in now.
I think the Royal Family is a good institution for a myriad of reasons and therefore will tolerate but not like Camilla.

DeleteI will add that Charles and the Middletons technically (reportedly) did not spend a week under the same roof. The Middletons were at Balmoral while CC came down for a weekend and stayed at Birkhall. Rather than a statement of unity, I think that the pictures were a statement that the Queen supports William and Kate and does not agree of her son's characterization of them.
I do agree that Charles was dealt a very raw hand early in life. Despite being brought up as a prince I believe that he had far from a happy childhood. If you watch videos of him greeting officials as a 4-5 year old boy what you see is a diffident little person, not confident and not happy. Anne on the other hand seems confident and aware. Phillip's own troubles, the Queen's lack of demonstration, all must have made for a confused little boy who grew up to be a confused adult.
You raise an important question about arranged marriage - would Diana have accepted it ? My belief is yes, and she would have languished in it. I believe that Diana was in love with CHarles and was looking for love - crazy passionate love. I think that she would have gone on to marry him, regardless, and would have been as desperately unhappy as she ended up being.
Charles behaved abominably to Diana. He destroyed her. But at the same time, he has done good for a multitude of people. He has always been on a quest for self-improvement and learning, knowledge. He has done well as PoW.
At the same time, his pettiness and his jealousy, his security - all of this manifests in his press relations. This is what makes him unlikeable and reduces him, in many people's eyes. I personally thought that it was tacky beyond belief to publicly trash the Middletons in the press. The first time those articles came out William retaliated in the press. The second time he kept quiet and got help from granny. Unless Charles lets go of his pettiness he will not regain his son's trust. That much is certain.
I am in complete agreement about Camilla. I find it puzzling that no one talks about her role as a mother. She was quite selfish and really just appalling - what she did to her children. She seems to be close with her grandchildren now. But the cynical side of me cannot help wonder whether there are ulterior reasons for her son Tom's closeness with her and Charles. After all this man has no qualms whatsoever dropping Charles' name when he needs. His wife is also another story. Now that Camilla is ensconced in a high-status marriage I suppose that it is easy to forgive her sins, eh !! Her sister Annabel who at the same time derided yet sanctioned the affair between C&C is now a benefactor to millions from royal contracts. So at the end of the day, you might say that the marriage helped redeem Camilla in her family's eyes.
Camilla - I do hope she understands one day, the role she played in the destruction of a marriage. No matter what people say - this was not just to be laid at Charles' door. Camilla was present from day one, and is a master manipulator. History will not judge her kindly, and nor should it.
I agree with the posters who think this photo op was the Queen's doing, and NOT a matter of HM/C/C putting their heads together to display family unity.
DeleteIt's safe to assume that W&K would have visited Scotland and spent time with the Queen anyway, especially ahead of the Canadian tour. The fact that the Middleton's were invited, with Carole sitting in the passenger seat next to the Queen, has to do with HM being supportive of her grandson and his wife. Surely, the Queen sees and must appreciate how good Kate has been for William and how flawlessly she stepped into her role. THIS young family is the future of the BRF. C&C's chapter will be short in comparison, and one that will never be described as popular.
I believe these photos are the Queen's statement to the public as much as they are to her son and his wife. I am glad that William is smart, has backbone, and a very supportive wife and in-laws. He (they) will need it after the Queen passes. And I pray that she has the QM's genes.
Regarding Charles' "raw deal"... I don't disagree, but I think there's an irony here... the QM adored and protected him to the point of making him incapable of seeing reality and judging himself fairly. HE could do no wrong, the world revolved around him and, IMO, he believes it. I sometimes think that her influence over him and that of other older women in his life had everything to do with him being attracted to Camilla. Similar to Edward's attraction to and dependence upon Wallis.

I love the tone of the trip, for them to see and do many things outdoors as well as visiting cities and small towns.
Dare I hope that we might get a picture of Charlotte with Kate as we did with George in the Australia New Zealand tour? I love that picture of him over her shoulder and he looks so happy and content. Or perhaps a photo of Charlotte and George with Kate or both. I'm not picky!
I live about an hour and a half away from Vancouver, and hope to be down at the Jack Poole plaza to see their arrival! I know, though, that even if I don't get a chance to see them, I will very much enjoy coming here to the blog each day to get the best coverage possible!

ReplyDeleteYour time is here; that was a smartly thoughtful style to have included the children's clothes. If chilly and/or it rains, PG's will fit. PC's choice might fir current climate your choice. Still, your choice of boots for PG reminds me of that beautiful brown bear in Canada Charlotte posted in previous posts. Fit for a bear visit? It is going to be an interesting time.
I was thinking of Charlotte for both outfits, though I've agreed that the fisherman cardigan and Ugg boots would be great on George. I thought that outfit would be good for the chilly Yukon if Charlotte went there, and the red outfit would be suitable for rainy BC. Anyway, thanks for your kind comment, Anon 15! I am very much looking forward to the tour, and I believe I was right when I said Kate might have little need for ball gowns. Some of the suggested long gowns that are less elaborate could be very appropriate for the Victoria reception, however. :-)

I'll be in Victoria (incidentally where I was married 3 yrs ago!) on the 24th, then traveling to Vancouver the morning of the 25th. Planning on taking BC Ferries. I think it'd be fun for those of us there to meet up to greet our gal Kate! Any thoughts?? You're all such a special group - might be fun to comment on the blog as one on the first 2 days of events. ReplyDeleteOhhhh, I've so been looking forward to this tour, but having seen the itinerary I must admit to feeling a little crestfallen. Float planes, hovercraft, canoes and sailing ships - I can't help thinking that Kate is going to have to spend most of the tour in trousers and her Sebago deck shoes as none of those forms of transport lend themselves to nice dresses and heels! Looks like the only evening engagement is more likely to be a cocktail dress than a full-length gown as well - sigh. I know it's shallow of me, and some of the engagements do look really interesting, but while Kate looks great in casual clothes (for a couple of days on a tour), I just love to see her all dressed up and looking 'princessy'. Here's hoping we still get a bit of that - and at least George and Charlotte are going - yay!

ReplyDeleteIn googling photos of Charlotte's christening, as I was looking for photos of George's many expressions, I was astonished to see the intense, intense security that was present around that little church. They in no way showed that at the time. The security was as intense as it was for the Royal wedding. As little George walked from to and from the church with his family, no wonder he had that look of curiosity and concern. It seems from the photos I saw recently that it wasn't the crowds per se that were producing George's hesitation and consternation. It was the security presence. Photos show that that was what he was looking at. There were police personnel positioned at about every six feet or less on either side all along the walkway, coupled by a moving wall of suited, hefty men with communicators.
Now, when we see looks of hesitation and concern from George or Charlotte at any given event, we have more of an idea why they are acting, or actually reacting, that way.
God bless little George for handling that as calmly as he did. I was astonished when I saw those photos.

DeleteSadly, police and guns will probably not get George confused. You can see in the recent pictures of George waving William and Kate away that there is a police with a machine gun standing just a few feet away from George and Maria. I think it's a normal occurance for him.

DeleteThe photos do show that. wow. There was an army of security there. They did not show that on the day. I remember seeing only a very few there at the time.
When you think about that though they were guarding the second, third and fourth in succession to the throne and then the first, second, third and fourth after the service. Include the Queen inside the church with them all, and yes, there should have been an army of security there.
In more than one of the photos George was looking with consternation directly at security.

The photos then showed a crowd of people interspersed with a few officers here and there, when in reality it was a crowd of officers interspersed with a small group of people here and there. And, yes, in more than one photo, George was looking directly at the security personnel, in bewilderment. The small area in proportion to the number of security seemed to make that more pronounced to him that day. Because of that, he seemed to be needing reassurance that the family members left at the church were all okay.

I didn't realize either that Sgt. Emma Probert, Kate's PPO, was walking beside her in the path.
I had seen a video on You Tube with the "moving wall of men" when Charles and Camilla had joined them on the walk, but I haven't found it again, yet. I also saw a couple of photos of George looking in awe at some police officers but haven't found those again yet. If you go into the galleries and want to backtrack to the dozens of photos you have just seen, it instead takes you automatically back to the original photo you started with and each photo has it's own gallery.
Nice but quite complex.
At Newstalk.com, in one photo where they are first on the path to the church, in about a 40 ft. section of walkway, I counted 5 security men in suits, Emma Probert, and 15 uniformed and armed police officers. That's 21 security personnel in only 40 feet or less of territory. And Charles and Camilla, with their security entourage, hadn't even joined them yet.

He's walking along with a crowd of people watching him, while the officers are standing with their backs to him. WE understand the significance of it; I don't believe a child would. MY opinion... :)

DeleteUh, I am not going to critique their outfits because for some reason I find myself really biased against most of their stylistic endeavors. I can't prove it, of course, but I think they have, upon occasion put Kate is some less than attractive outfits and hairstyles, acting more like a group of coffee clatche friends than high profile professionals. (like letting Kate meet the Prime Minister of India in a dress that quite glaringly did not fit Kate properly). I could elaborate but choose to let their sartorial history speak for itself. (Remember all those times we were repeatedly asking ourselves where has Kate's sense of style gone?) I am sure these ladies are very nice and sweet people but I think their talents are not quite up to par for the positions they currently have.

DeleteI am glad she has the trio as friends perhaps, if they can be truly called friends as they are actually employees, but to dress Kate better first of all, and more "royally" second of all, as Julia and Ali said, Kate needs to get gifted professionals to truly help her look her awesome best. This looks to be a fun trip, but I don't see any formal engagement that would warrant an evening gown. Did I miss something?
ReplyDeleteI agree - I'm not surprised but I find it a pity. The styling posts which include many young people show how keen people are to see a princess in formal dress - I think some of this is coming from William and Kate's team who may not be getting that message - one of the beauties of the British royal family is that they have never been the "bicycle riding" royals of Scandinavia - where ironically, there are a lot more formal events. This doesn't mean that the planned events are wrong - just that a real princess showing (and prince would be welcome - especially in such elegant cities -otherwise William and Kate really just look like a couple of nice young people - with a loss of mystique.
DeleteThere will be a reception, hosted by the provincial government (more than likely attended by the Lt. Governor of BC, the Premier of BC and the Prime Minister Trudeau)at Government House where they will be staying. Receptions at Government House are formal, so that would be the occasion for an evening gown :)
DeleteAs someone who has met this couple on their previous tour of Canada at a reception, I would say that clothes do not define them as to who they are. When they enter the room, there is definitely a different aura about them. However down to earth they are, in person you know you are meeting someone different. I think we as the public are too intent on placing our imaginations of a princess on Kate. We forget she is a human being with her own tastes and desires. Victoria is an elegant city, but Vancouver is a very modern bustling city. It is an great iitinery and we should value what they showcase instead of it being all about the clothes.

However, clothing is really all we have since most of us have never been in their presence. Thank you for your account of what it is like to see them in person. DeleteYes, but 99% of the world including the majority of Canadians will never have this experience of meeting them but will judge the tour based on photos - the most iconic photo of her first tour - the one everyone remembers is Kate in her mauve gown in Los Angles. Many would strain to remember her purple cocktail dress.
DeleteKate and William are prince and princess by profession - look at what's listed on their children's birth certificate. their own "tastes and desires" are a small part of the equation. How many of us wore courts to work - and still do - it can even be required - or suits - or uniforms that might not correspond with our own "tastes and desires." but which were part of the appearance needed for our job description. From Hollywood stars, to doctors, to solicitors, to waitresses to politicians - people dress to fit their roles.
What counts is how the public perceives what they want in a prince and a princess - and looking at all sites where monarchists gather - not just this one - there is a real interest in seeing the glamourous part of royalty - if we are honest, that's what we all loved as children on - this isn't an age related thing. I don't want to get into sex stereotyping but just looking at little girls I see - they love tiaras and fancy dress. So do teenagers - a prom gown is one of the most exciting things. I don't think William and Kate's advisors quite have that balance right - I do think other monarchies are doing a better job of creating that balance at this point while William and Kate are veering a little too near to bicycles monarchy. (And please don't mention Camilla - how many little girls have paperdoll books of her!)
On this, I'll point to the recent engagement of Princess Madeleine with those young critically ill children when she put on gown and tiara and got down on the floor with them - it was beautiful and hugely popular. Diana also had this balance down perfectly - she had a tremendous human touch but never lost the understanding of the glamour aspect.
I'm sure it will be a lovely tour - hopefully with an emphasis mostly on people not sight-seeing - the itinerary in that regard looks good - and the children will be popular but the lack of what I'm going to term "regality" an invented word - is something William and Kate need to consider. It's not just my own personal feelings but a feeling this is something important in the balance of royal life is missing.
Julia enjoyed your thoughtful post. I think you have pegged it correctly, either William and Catherine or their advisors are probably not quite hitting the appropriate balance in the PR aspect of their clothes. Queen Elizabeth basically has a Queen uniform she wears for different engagements. Catherine and William have not quite figured out how to make their dressing easy but still have the "Royal" aspect to it. Ali

I understand your comments royalfan, I agree the Canadians must have made many of the proposals for the tour itinerary, but at the end of the day please remember how the late PoW dressed for such occasions. Perhaps you're correct and they will become more formal as they move up the ranks, but the closer they get to the throne the more problems C&C will have with them and their popularity, so I'm not frightfully certain they will think it prudent to progress?

Tradition, pomp and circumstance, and ladies fashion are an important part of the equation, but if this was enough, then surely C&C would have cinched the deal by now and PR wouldn't be a line item in the budget. Diana proved that the public wants to be able to relate to someone who is kind, compassionate, and relevant. She did dress the part, absolutely, but it was the cherry on the cake. The world didn't react the way it did to her death because of the way she dressed.
While the Queen is on the throne and her almost 68 year old son is waiting to be king, IMO, W&K are representing THEIR generation and doing an outstanding job of it.

I do believe their intentions are ultruistic ones though and Charles does apply himself dutifully that's for sure. If Charles gets to be king, it will only be for a blink of time. So it is imperative that William and Kate step it up more and they have been. I am concerned about Kate having time to learn about the Royal residences, the bling, the protocols, the ceremonies, etc. Obviously she will have help, but that is still a lot to take in. Queen Elizabeth had grown up in the midst of it all. Kate hasn't, although she did have those ten years while dating William to learn a few things about the Royal environments.

ReplyDeleteIt is the Monarch's official royal residence in Scotland so it is owned by the Crown and held in trust by the Monarch. In contrast, Balmoral is her private residence and owned by Her Majesty.

The Crown Estate is a collection of lands and holdings BELONGING TO the British monarch AS A "corporation sole" (google that for more details), making it THE SOVEREIGN'S "public estate", which is NEITHER government property nor a part of the monarch's PERSONAL estate (but it is her "Crown Estate").
The Queen currently receives 15% of the Crown Estate's annual net revenue, in lieu of the civil list, that since 2012, no longer exists.
The Crown Estate is the largest property owner in the United Kingdom, with a portfolio worth €12 billion.

Yes, there is a distinction between Crown Estates and the government - and remember Crown Estates extend far beyond palaces - I was not long ago in an office of a private firm leased from Crown Estates - but this land regardless of whether it is residential for royals, rental income or for diplomatic (such as - in name - St. James) or other purposes is used for the support of the monarchy but belongs to the nation. This is distinct from property the queen owns privately - Balmoral and Sandringham and so on.
DeleteThere are other distinctions - Highgrove that the Duchy of Cornwall owns. It is not a crown property but not truly privately owned either and of course again it owns considerable property.
It's a confusing distinction and would become most important if the monarchy ended. In Scotland in theory - devolution would not affect Balmoral but might or might not affect the status of Holyrood. I presume if the monarchy continued in Scotland, Holyrood would continue as a royal palace - if not, the issue is less clear as to whether Crown Estates would continue to hold it. Today, while the queen resides only briefly at Holyrood Palace - it's open to the public and has a fascinating historic and sometimes tragic history. (And be sure and visit Canongate Kirk if in that area.)

DeleteThe Crown Estate used to be the personal property of the monarch until one of the George's ceded it to the government in return for an income. Prior to that the monarch funded the government, and that particular George realized he was responsible for a bit more than he could chew, so he turned it over in return for a stable income without the big maw of the government eating away at it. It's not really owned by the monarch and if the monarchy goes away, whoever is on the throne at the time probably won't be taking it with him/her. Not sure about the Duchy of Lancaster though. That's used now for personal income/expenses I think. The crown estate money funds the monarch.

ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting tour but as I expected sadly there will be no event for us to see Kate in any of the lovely evening dresses picked out by some of our readers I hope she wears an eye catching cocktail dress for the event in Victoria. It will be interesting to see how she dresses to cover multiple events on most of the days think footwear could be interesting I do hope she gets things right it won't be too easy. I could imagine coat dresses possibly on the agenda as the temperature is not overly warm. I suspect the day involving a canoe paddle & fishing will see her in casual attire. I hope we see George & Charlotte at another event as well as the tea party & let us hope the little kids are not too put out by the long air trip, I do think the press are being a little over the top by referring to the little boy as being the "republican slayer" I just wonder what W & K think of it.
ReplyDeleteIt was good seeing photos of Kate with the Queen at Balmoral and also that Michael & Carole were also there by invitation of the Queen I think that once again shows what a very perceptive person the Queen is in this way putting paid to all the unpleasant insinuations that have been made over some months about her opinion of the Middletons & Kate.
I thought the pap photos of George waving goodbye to W& K when going away for the Cornwall trip was sweet he dii look rather tearful & Kate picking up Lupo, despite being dressed in her finery for the trip, who had appeared to have escaped she then ran to catch up with William on his way to the helicopter just shows how normal the family are.
I now look forward to the Canadian tour

DeleteBut I guess I have been following the BRF for a very long time because I do not consider the image to be alarming. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the reality of what I am seeing, but from George's point of view, he's walking along and sees a crowd of people standing and looking at him, while the police officers are standing with their backs to him. I may be missing an image others here have seen, but I don't find this one to be disturbing *from George's point of view.*

DeleteIt is quite the trip! I lived in BC for 4 years, never made it to the Yukon though. If I had to do half the traveling they are doing I would be comatose by the second day! Good thing Nanny Maria is going!

ReplyDeleteThe itinerary and locations sound beautiful and like something that both William and Kate will enjoy given their outdoor interests and the charity work. I, for one, am absolutely fine with the apparent fact that there are no 'dress up like a princess' events. Some of my favorite looks from the India trip were from the daytime events. I would much rather see them focusing attention on conservation/environment and their charity work than what she may or may not happen to wear. Especially considering how there is always someone complaining, no matter what she wears or how she styles her hair. I am looking forward to seeing photographs from the various sites and can't wait to see George and Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteI am fully fine with the lack of dress up as well. Different tours warrant different looks. Some are more schmoozing and gala, some are more tourism, some are focused on a certain area etc. Some tours will have more gala looks while some like these, are in very rural areas known for their gorgeous nature. Ofc the people in charge of the tour from Canada will want to show off their tourism spots. Hence outdoors. And with the kids with them, the opportunity for evening events (which are usually the dressed up ones) lower. It's just not that kind of tour :) And that is ok. I am looking forward to alot of these events. While the clothes might be lacking at the outdoorsy events, the interactions between the couple are usually at their best. And then them meeting addict mothers, refugees, native people etc. Alot of very important events. And ofc the kids!!! This tour will be great, just in a different way!
DeleteI enjoy looking at royal gowns and jewels, but the interaction between W/K/G/C, and between the Cambridge's and the public is what makes me smile. That's the real deal. And, speaking as someone who followed Diana, her struggles, and watched the coverage surrounding her death, I wouldn't have dared to imagine that one of her sons would find this level of personal happiness. AMEN, and fingers crossed for Harry's future.
DeleteI too Rebecca am fine too with the lack of dress up. It would become boring if all tours had the same sort of format and then we would be all complaining. What I like about these sort of tours is that Kate has the ability to look great in looks that an ordinary girl could emulate and that exercise is so much a part of what she is. Such a good role model to encourage weight loss and prevention of type 2 diabetes in the under thirties in particular. We do not have enough dialysis machines to deal with the deluge that is fast approaching. Obesity and antibiotic resistance might yet be what causes the extinction of mankind and not a nuclear apocalypse.

DeleteHarry has a good role model in Kate and has said that he realizes that for a marriage to work optimally it helps to be friends first. So, obviously he has been thinking things through and that is more than a lot of people do. Harry has common sense and a fairly good grip on reality I feel, so his chances of finding a good mate are increased by all the above. Plus, William isn't going to let him proceed without his wise counsel. :)

DeleteI honestly believe that they are doing to tour this year is because they are planning on another baby. This way if they have a third baby Charlotte will already be 2 years old, this will be easier on Catherine.

ReplyDeleteRemember also, that Kate will one day be the hostess of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral, etc. It is helpful that Kate and her family become familiar with those places and while the Queen is still alive to help show them the ins and outs of those magnificent places. This will not be Michael and Carole's last visit to Balmoral.
Wow. That is right. Kate will be in charge of the palaces and castles, and family gatherings there.

DeleteCarole and Michael were not just ordinary guests anyway. As mentioned, they will be an integral part of those places when William is king and Kate Queen. I am glad the Queen treated them as family almost. She knows they will be spending plenty of time there with Kate and her family in the future. The Queen is one smart cookie, and a very sweet one.

DeleteNot to mention remembering where all the rooms are at each place and what each room is used for. Most importantly you would want to know all the employees by their first name, or at least I would want to and I feel certain Kate would. Then there are the grounds and the horses and the protocols and the Jewels. And William will have to deal with that pesky red box every day. So good Kate is getting a running start while Her Majesty is still here to share and instruct. Kate will cherish those memories.
Long live the Queen though.
You know, I think the Queen likes Michael and Carole (what's not to like), but I am pursuaded that the Queen wants Carole to feel comfortable and very welcome in Royal digs so Carole can even better help Kate when the time for transition occurs. We might be seeing more invitations from the Queen for Michael and Carole to visit Windsor, Buckingham Palace, Sandringham per se, etc. I think the Queen really likes Kate and remembers how much she valued having the Queen mum by her side all those years and so she is going the extra mile to make sure Michael and Carole feel like a part of the family. They have proven themselves to be trustworthy. And, again, I think she genuinely likes them.

What is even sadder to me is the necessity of at least two armed police officers there in bulletproof vests with one holding a drawn machine gun, his handhold on the gun action ready. Such is the life of William and Kate, as also referenced by 09:01 above.
Very sobering photos. Quite a juxtaposition to all the glam.
My guess is that their helicopter will not fly solo either without an accompanying protective companion aircraft or two at whatever distance away.
Apparently the officers have an outpost there at Kensington Palace as they are standing beside what looks like a functioning guard shack.

Living vicariously through the Cambridge tour is fun, but it sounds exhausting! And then you come home after your engagements and see the little ones!!! I hope when they get back home, they have a little time to unwind. We're all excited. Let's hope George and Charlotte don't get a cold or ear infection which would make the long airplane ride unbearable for everyone! Depending on the weather, I would like to see an elegant boot with a midi skirt suit for the city engagements.

DeleteI personally think that the Queen's invitation to the Middleton's and Charle's Birkhail invitation to William, Kate and the children, including the hunting, were in direct response to an August 6 article in the Daily Mail by (ugh), Katie Nicholl. Don't know that they could have coordinated schedules that quickly, but I think that is exactly what they did. Now, what are you going to write Katie, hummmm?

ReplyDeleteI live in Kelowna and from what I've read they will be here only 3 hours and both the UBC visit and Mission Hill Winery (simply stunning site) will be secluded - restricted to students at UBC and invited guests at Mission Hill. So best bet is to try to see them at the airport I'm thinking. Anyone have further info?

Now I have to "woman up" and admit this. I'm sulking because the tour is in B.C. and Yukon so I'm actually closer to W. & K. when they're at home in England than I will be when they actually come to Canada. That's how big this place is.
Sigh! As part of that long term relationship with Canada, I hope they come to Toronto some day. After all, we are the Centre of the Universe! (For all of you, that is an inside "Canadian" joke meant to lovingly poke fun at all my compatriots who claim that Torontonians assume, because of the size and profile of our city, that we are the centre of both Canada and the whole universe.)
I'm just jealous of everyone who may see them in person. Nevertheless, I'm proud of my beautiful, immense and extraordinary country. We are so blessed!
Apparently Kate filed a complaint of breach of privacy against the paper that took the photo of George sitting on an officer's motorcycle on the grounds of Kensington Palace. She won. The paper had to publish a sort of apology.

Despite my sartorial concerns (which are after all unimportant in the end of the tour goes well as expected), I believe KP and the Canadian authorities have hit a home run in the itinerary. The brilliant photos you have posted alone Charlotte make me want to hop an aeroplane and visit Canada's beautiful Pacific Northwest. What more could they possibly do for the Commonwealth? Just brilliant!
