The Duchess in Self-Portrait for Film Festival Highlights & A Street Cat Named Bob Premiere

The Duchess of Cambridge carried out two engagements this evening: the Recovery Street Film Festival and the UK premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob in London.

Kate's first engagement of the evening was embargoed, with details only released shortly before the engagement began. One imagines this was due to security concerns. The Duchess viewed the highlights of the Recovery Street Film Festival, which focuses on filmmakers who have a lived experience of recovering from drug or alcohol addiction, whether their own or that of a loved one.

The Duchess heard from the makers of the films about what inspired them to pick up the camera. Kate was particularly taken with fifteen-month-old Eden Walker. "Hello, aren't you a sweetheart?" said Kate, bending down to look at the baby. "How old is she?" she asked.

More from the Daily Express:

"At the  event, held at the offices of Four Weddings and a Funeral filmmakers Working Title, the Duchess listened intently as several former addicts told their stories both in person and on film. Among them was Lisa Breyer, a trustee of Action on Addiction, who has been clean for 34 years. She last took drugs at the age of 25 and is now a mother of 19-year-old twins. "Your Royal Highness, you have taken us at Action on Addiction, for who we are and what we do, warts and all. And it is warts and all," she said, promoting Kate to laugh.
The future Queen chatted intently with many of those who starred in the three-minute winning films, including Martina Bell, who works with addicts at HMP Wymott. She said: "She was fascinated to learn about the work we do and how many inmates are in recovery given the environment we are living and working in."
David McCollon, from Warrington, was an addict 14 years ago and lost a leg to gangrene caused by injecting drugs but now has his own media company. "Well done on getting your message across,"Kate told him. "

Kate takes her seat in the cinema room at the Working Titles office to watch the special screening.

The festival was established three years ago by a consortium of charities including Kate's patronage Action on Addiction. The aim is to empower people affected by addiction by giving them a voice, and providing a platform for them to tell the stories of the ‘ups and downs’ and how they reached recovery. The films aim to highlight the problems that are confronted when someone is attempting to regain their place in society: to gain new friends, to revive links with family, secure a home and get a job. You can view the 2016 Shortlist here.

I found reading Ceri's experience very interesting. She won the competition last year and shared an insightful account of her journey:

"I entered the Recovery Street Festival competition after seeing it on Addaction’s Facebook page. I felt like it was a good opportunity to try and show others the impact of alcoholism on the children involved, both as a child and an adult.
My mum was an alcoholic, and my childhood was very chaotic and unstable. I always thought I could fix my mum and kept the alcoholism a secret from everyone. I still meet a lot of challenges with self-esteem and anxiety due to this. My mum died when I was 21 so I feel a huge gap in my life now.
I really didn't think I'd be able to speak in front of the camera, but decided to just give it a try, with no expectations, but love writing and being creative so tried to just enjoy the process. It was difficult to make at times, some days I could only manage to do it for a few minutes but other days I spent hours editing it. It started at 20 minutes long, so it took a while to edit down to 3 minutes!  I didn't realise at first, but the main benefit to making the film was that after having my son I was again processing the grief of losing my mum. The film helped me remind myself that mum was controlled by alcoholism and it wasn't my fault, and has really helped me move on.
I've now started helping the charity NACOA (national association for children of alcoholics) and they have been able to use my film and story to raise awareness during Children of Alcoholics week. I think that in the future the Recovery Street Festival could be a great way for people to work through their own stories and celebrate their recovery. It's also a great creative output and really improved my confidence. These films could help all the charities involved educate others of the impact drugs and alcohol have, and show others they aren't alone in their journey and motivate them to make changes to their lives."

You can view Ceri's very moving winning entry Understanding Mum here. I think she did an outstanding job of conveying the experiences and emotions one goes through watching a loved one battle addiction.

From there, the Duchess walked the red carpet for the premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob at Curzon Mayfair cinema.

The Duchess was all smiles upon arrival.

Kate was greeted with cheers from a sea of onlookers eager to snap a photo of the Duchess.

The premiere benefits Action on Addiction, and it was interesting to see the charity linking both of this evening's engagements. Graham Beech, chief executive of the organisation said: "Today, we are highlighting the message which is a theme of the film that even in the depths of addiction, there is hope. Addiction is a devastating condition which affects individuals, families and the wider community, and people find it difficult to talk about the issue. We are grateful to the Duchess for continuing to ensure that the subject of addiction is not ignored, and that people are encouraged to speak out and seek support and treatment."

The view down the red carpet.

Based on the international best selling book, it tells the true feel-good story of how James Bowen, a busker and recovering drug addict, had his life transformed when he met a stray ginger cat. The tale of the unlikely friendship between James and Bob has been described as "incredibly moving". The cast includes Luke Treadaway, Anthony Head and Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates), whom Kate previously met during a visit to the show's set.

Richard Palmer shared further background on James and Bob "They live together in south London. "Bob bought a house and I pay the mortgage," said Bowen, who now does charity work on behalf of the homeless and addicts. "He showed me that everybody has a second chance in life if they want it. He made me see the need to get clean so that I could take care of him and in turn take care of myself. At home he likes to sit down and watch telly. He is a bit of the king in the house."

You can view the movie's trailer on YouTube.

Bob posing on the red carpet :)

A look at Joanne Froggatt's sweeping gown tonight.

Kate with the real star of the show Bob who starred as himself in the movie and James Bowen who inspired the film. Kate stroked the cat and asked "Is he purring or growling?". "I'm really not sure if that's purring or growling" he said, putting a reassuring hand on Bob.

A brief video of Kate meeting Bob :)

We've seen Kate supporting a selection of new brands this year. Tonight she did just that wearing a dress by the increasingly-popular London label Self-Portrait. The Duchess wore the brand's Pleated Crochet Cotton Blend Maxi Dress from the Resort 2016 Collection.

The dress originally retailed for $640 before selling out. It was described: "Self-Portrait puts its stamp on this season’s Victorian trend with this elegant white crepe maxi dress. Crafted with a crochet bodice and long sleeves, a grosgrain band defines and flatters your waist, before falling to a pleated maxi skirt spliced with a leg-baring split. Complete the look with nude sandals." The dress was recently worn by Paris Hilton according to the fabulous Fug Girls.

ShopBop

Kate's dress is available in black at Lane Crawford for $480 (however, this dress doesn't appear to have a split). The dress is described as "a good balance of the label's conceal-and-reveal aesthetic". The very similar Self-Portrait Mia Dress is also available in all sizes at Net-A-Porter.

Lane Crawford

The brand launched in 2013 and has enjoyed stratospheric success ever since, calling every fashionista and celebrity from Blake Lively, Rachel McAdams and Miranda Kerr to Princess Victoria of Sweden a fan. Fashionista.com wrote an excellent piece on the brand and the designer Han Chong last year:

'Designer Han Chong, a Malaysia native and graduate of Central Saint Martins, has been in the fashion business for over a decade. After co-founding label Three Floor, he decided to strike out on his own in fall of 2013 with Self-Portrait, and its success has been rapid. Net-a-Porter and Bergdorf Goodman have both already picked up the line, attracted to its feminine dresses and separates with lots of lace, embroidery and sheer overlays, as well as its appealing price point: Dresses fall in the $500 to $600 range.'

Two particularly interesting questions from the interview. It was very interesting to see Han Chong's response when asked why he chose to hone his craft at Saint Martins:

'Because Alexander McQueen went to Saint Martins, and I get a lot of influence from him. It’s a very good school. I think it’s the energy, making you want to be better than anyone. The environment was super creative and you can do anything you want there; there’s no restrictions. They don’t tell you, "You cannot do this, you cannot do that," and I think that’s very good at a very young age to experience that, and also prepare you for the real industry afterwards because of the competition. '

Describing the Self-Portrait woman, Mr. Chong said: "She’s not afraid to stand out. She definitely doesn’t want to blend in. She wants to light up, she likes attention, I think, because you get noticed when you wear Self-Portrait. She’s feminine and at the same time, sometimes she’s not afraid to kind of play with gender and clothes." Below, three popular styles from the brand: the Prairie Midi Dress, the Azaela Fit-and-Flare Dress and the Asymmetrical Midi Dress.

Nordstrom

And what did the designer think of Kate wearing one of his designs. Speaking to The Telegraph Han Chong said "It's a proud moment for me as designer to find Kate in one of my designs! She's such an elegant women and it's a dream to see. She looks incredible!"

Kate wore her Buckley poppy brooch.

Kate carried her burgundy suede Mulberry Bayswater Clutch.

And it appears Kate wore her burgundy Gianvito Rossi 105 Suede Pumps. The pumps are available for $675 at My Theresa.

My Theresa

Kate completed the look with her $190 Oscar de la Renta Hammered Gold-Plated Faux Pearl Earrings. The earrings are described: "Oscar de la Renta's earrings are an elegant way to complete day or evening looks. This gold-plated pewter pair is hammered to beautifully catch the light and centered with smooth faux pearls. Wear yours with swept-back hair."

Does kate know what season it is? I don't like the idea of wearing white at all in the fall! I love the dark blues and purples and reds
I mean white after labor day? No no no
Also, it doesn't look like it is tailored to her properly. It is very baggy on the top part of the dress

    1. So the queen and Camilla were off at the state banquet as well as both were in white? Queen was also in pale pink for her statue unveiling yesterday. As always she looked elegant for highlighting a very worthwhile and what must be a very emotional cause.

    2. The no white after labor day is really a US thing. Winter whites are a common trend, and on top of that Kate looks greater in that paler palette.

    3. I think colour coding the seasons is an American thing. IN the Uk its every colour for all the seasons. And lets be honest, not many in the Uk have a clue what Labor Day is!

    4. We don't have that rule in Britain.

    5. Cream color is worn all fall and winter. Perhaps you are the one who is uninformed.

And I doubt if many people in the UK know what Labor Day is

    7. I find it odd that some people seem to claim that everyone should follow the so-called "fashion rule" that dictates women not to wear white after summer, which I perceive as an outdated notion. You can find so many great examples of women rocking white outfits in fall and winter online.

    8. As I commented below, the notion of no white after Labor Day went out a long time ago. That was a part of my grandmother's generation.

    9. Not wearing white after Labor Day has not been a U.S. thing for a very long time. Everyone wears whatever colors they like all year long. Wearing darker clothing colors during the cooler months is a preference not a rule.

    10. That is a winter white.

    11. When is labour day? And when can you start wearing white again? I'm irish & I agree with the uk posters, we have no such rules except you don't wear white to a wedding & wear black to a funeral!

Had such nice bouncy blow drys years ago. Eg when she wore the black velvet strapless floor length dress. Now they're a bit limp

    13. American here and no rules on color that I have been aware of for many many years, if it ever was really a hard and fast rule except in a few etiquette books:)

    14. We don't even have Labor Day in Europe.
Do you really never wear anything white in winter? There are such nice white winter sweaters. And just out of curiosity: when do you start wearing white again?

    15. I'm in the US and I live in California, and there isn't much of a rule anymore of what to wear (in fact, lots of people now wear black to weddings). I'm not sure if there's a rule elsewhere in the country, but I sort of suspect it might be a generational thing (excluding me, as I'm 50 and ignore the color rule).

    16. Sarah, I do agree, it seems a bit too loose on top, which is odd for Kate. I also thought I saw a loose thread and some wrinkles in the dress. I'm not sure about the thigh-high slit...But she's always so pretty no matter what she wears.

Very outdated "rule"; each should do as she pleases, but it's a bit silly to impose '50s-style restrictions on others.

      Delete
    19. Sarah, how old are you anyway? My mother was the last person I heard say that rule, and she's been dead for decades. Not only that, but she was only talking about shoes! Not dresses. For those who asked, she would allow white shoes after Easter. Labor Day is the first Monday in September.

      Kate looks splendid!

I'm in my 20s and this whole look just screams summer or spring to me
It would have been nice in a darker color like red or navy blue
She has been wearing a lot of white lately so I just want to see a different color
Labor Day is in September btw
And it isn't even just the color. The overall look screams a different season

      Delete
    21. The "white" rule actually started for a very practical reason: laundry was done by hand and the sun was used to "bleach" white clothing. It was much easier to keep white clothing clean in the summer (no mud puddles or coal dust), and if disaster struck, it was much easier to get it clean again. Hence the rule, which was generally after Memorial Day and before Labor Day (late May to first Monday in September). But as other readers have noted, that rule is rarely followed anymore, in part because the practical reason for following the rule no longer exists.

      Delete
    22. Guess this is a very outdated American "rule"!! Here is a link from Emily Post on when and where this rule started and that it has long since been abandoned for the more popular guideline “wear what’s appropriate—for the weather, the season, or the occasion.”

Think Kate is lovely and the dress appropriate for the occasion. It can't be easy going to a movie premiere by yourself and watching something while being watched.....and then looking good while doing it!! Kate handles herself quite well. cc

    23. I think the no white after Labor Day did apply mostly to shoes and purses. Easter was the day you could wear white again. But if you wore a white dress, it had to be a winter white. And that wasn't very common. Funny as it may seem, everyone complied. It wasn't a big deal. It was just natural to most of us. Funny to read the discussion. (No, I don't I old, lol.)

      Delete
    24. I live in Florida and Minnesota, white/winter white is worn all year, but no white shoes should ever be worn!

      Delete
    25. That white went out after labor Day has been lost for years now. When I asked about it I was told winter white is in. I do wish she would wear her hair up with a evening gown. She was beautiful.

      Delete
    26. Actually, I owned a white evening dress in the 1950s! And I lived in a place where dress was conservative. That rule never applied to clothing, only accessories. I was surprised when I visited Britain to see white dress shoes with wool suits. Different climate, different customs.

    28. * No, I don't feel old, lol.

I remember those days like they were yesterday. Those are the days even before pantyhose, ladies. We wore garters to hold our hosiery up. :)
And, of course, your purse and shoes had to match.

    29. Thanks Becky.

That makes perfect sense. People did do a lot of hand laundry then. They had metal washing tins. People use those now with lots of ice in them to hold many cold drinks at parties. Those who could, had the old fashioned wringer washers and I don't think dryers had even been invented yet. Everyone put their laundry on a clothesline somewhere to dry clothes, inside, or outside weather permitting.

    30. 10:13,

I thought about that also. Watching a movie in public by yourself, to me is always awkward.
When the movies are intense and you are being watched by everyone that would be very challenging. Kate handles all that like a Princess.

    31. Sarah,

Living on the East Coast of the U.S., as I did for many years, I rarely saw white after Labor Day either. A few winter white coats or winter white slacks but I don't think I ever saw white after Labor Day.

    32. 22:32,

I am not so sure this is a winter white. It looks more like a whiter fabric. That correlates to the lightness of the crocheted top and light fabric skirt. It seems like a dress for the warmer seasons. She looks lovely in it as usual but she seems to be wearing a lot of summertime stuff recently. Natasha...........

    33. Sarah, you're twisting in the wind on this one, but I agree with you. I don't care if it's archaic. I wouldn't wear head to toe white either especially with burgundy suede shoes.

And, for those saying it would be hard watching a film alone . . . it's dark and last time I was in a movie theater it was pretty difficult to see people unless they were seated right next to you.

      Delete
    34. The current (last decade or so) fashion for all black all the time bothers me a lot more than a white evening dress! I once attended a wedding in the middle of the US, in summer, where all of the women from that area wore pretty pastel colors, and the couple's friends from the east coast all wore black. When I travel to the east, I have to be careful what I pack. But I get very tired of rooms full of women in grey, black, and navy. Sometimes I deliberately wear a bright color to liven things up. :-)

      Delete
    35. Yeh, but it is way better having someone you know by your side to share the theater experience. Dining alone at restaurants is the same way.

People still report on Kate's reactions during the movies. So someone is watching her.

So great to see her again! And very nice that they combined some "smaller movies" with a similar background and theme around the bigger movie premiere! Imagine how big for them to show their work and tell their story to her! Great day :)

Her look is alright. Nothing groundbreaking, but pretty enough. I like that she's still experementing with acccent shoes even though she's still keeping it within the red-scale. Baby steps :D Can't wait to get better pictures! :)

    3. No problem with the color...it's totally appropriate but my gosh couldn't she wear evening shoes?! I realize her toes might be a concern for her, but there are plenty of great closed toe options...maybe with a satin ankle bow or something. And more jewels would certainly be welcome. Great event and cause as usual, and of course she's such a beauty but details make a big difference in the dress department.

    4. This is a very miss for Kate.... I think its the combo of the pleats and the crochet. The top of the dress is lovely but it needed a better bottom half. A pleated skirt to a movie premiere? In my opinion, pleated skirts are for the office / daytime wear. Also, I am confused as to why anyone would put a slit in a pleated skirt, it does not have the effect that a slit should have when she's walking. It looks like a really awkward dress to me.

I love that she tried the pop of colour with the shoes and the bag but this dress has let her down sadly.

    5. I agree about the shoes! Suede courts are definitely not evening shoes. We would like to see some lovely Prada satin ones with a blingy buckle. I have to say I thought the dress looked very cheap and there wasn't nearly enough fabric in the skirt. This was billed as a red carpet event and sadly didn't live up to it at all. Would someone please tell her that her hair needs to be UP UP UP for evening events!

  4. I don't like this dress, the bottom is ok, but I don't like the top. It almost looks like flowers/oval windows in the tops of the dress. Sort of a strange design for me. It sort of reminds me of the cream crochet dress she wore at the play date recently, which I wasn't a huge fan of that dress either. I do like how she chose red accessories instead of her usual black! Nice change but I don't like the shade of red. This would be nice shade of shoe with a holiday dress, but I think for this white dress a brighter red would have been nice over all. It could be the lighting though lol. I wish her hair was nicer. It just looks like it was washed, blow dried and a few quick curls at the ends. While I'm sure that's not what happened, haha, It looks sort of messy for this event.

I think this dress is too casual for this event. Not that she should be in a grand ball gown, but this looks too casual to me. Pretty boring look for me. I like the red shoes. Just because you find her "stunning" also doesn't mean everyone else will love what she wears/thinks she looks a,along at every event. That isn't to say she looks awful of course, this just isn't my favorite look. We are commenting on clothes, not the person. Also lots of people say how they don't like a particular look on her, this is what makes the blog fun, different opinions.

    4. Some context with respect to the "white rule". It's not really a rule, but rather comes from aspirational and practical origins. In the industrial age in the USA and before air-conditioning, people in urban areas wore mostly black or dark colors. With soot, dirty streets and other considerations dark colors were practical. Their attire was more formal than we are accustomed to and people sought ways to be cooler. White reflects light and therefore was cooler. But who could afford a second wardrobe? Only the rich and affluent. And who could spend lengthy time in an environment where wearing white was practical and wouldn't get dirty? In the warm weather season the wealthy and upper class (which in the northern US is considered the end of May through September 1) would escape the heat by moving to the country or seashore for the season. And they wore white. Come September 1, they would return home, pack away the whites and resume wearing dark colors. It signified an end to leisure and a return to industriousness. With the rise of a middle class and the labor movement affording workers vacations and leisure time, there was opportunity to get away from the city and factories for short periods and people began to wear white in the summer season. They aspired to fit in with the upper class. Manners and etiquette became paramount for being accepted as an equal by upper classes. It was also a badge of honor to wear white as it signaled that you had sufficient standing or resources to have leisure time. In the early 20th century the concept became so entrenched that there was peer pressure and if you wore white before Memorial Day/the end of May or after the beginning of September/Labor Day, you were considered uncouth and uneducated.

The advent of air-conditioning and the loss of manufacturing jobs in favor of office positions, the massive population shift from the northeast and mid west of the US with defined seasons, to warm weather areas of the south and west have blurred the application of the so called "rule". But it still has resonance in the northeast. You can walk down the street in New York or Boston and a woman wearing white shoes after September (exception: athletic shoes) will garner disapproving looks in her wake. All of this however pertains to a bright white. A cream or off white is considered "winter white" that is deemed perfectly acceptable. I don't really know why that distinction should be made except I suspect it has to do with the natural colors of wool and possibly furs. Phew, crazy isn't it?

Anyway the Duchess' dress on this occasion is a creamy white, so whether or not one follows the "white rule", she's wearing winter white. No violation to be found here. Thank goodness!

The dress surprised me tonight too as it is quite different. I'm still torn on whether or not I like it. It is a bit summery for this time of year especially when the caption includes nude sandals. I do like how she accessorized it with the maroon shoes/clutch. Waiting on a better Id for the earrings. The skirt seemed to move really lovely in her 'action' shots of walking the red carpet.

She looks beautiful and I am planning on seeing the movie when its available to the US. It looks very interesting and inspiring

  9. White is For sure HER color.
The dress is not a memorable choice. Nice lace, but there's something strange in the fitting of the skirt. Not her best look, imo.

  10. I love that she attended both movie events and wore this outstanding choice of dress. My favorite picture is the one at the Recovery Street Film Festival where she is talking with filmmakers and one of them holds a baby in his arms who is staring with fascination at the Duchess.

  12. Have we seen this dress somewhere else - did she wear it to the horse races or one of the games or something ? I seem to recall something like this with a red coat on top.
I don't dislike it but I think that Kate looks stunning in deeper colors. I don't know why Kate likes white so much. It just washes her out but the jewel colors are what draw out her true beauty.

Nice engagements. I love the snap of the duchess with Bob. I wonder how she feels about cats? The royal family - except for Princess Michael - aren't cat fanciers and Charles is phobic apparently, although I've seen Camilla pet them. (Don't come to Julia's house, Charles!) These are good events for the charities they support.

I like her outfit quite well - I've always liked white pleated skirts and the slit gives it a bit of a spark. The top is very much of the moment, and not very much to my taste, but it does look nice on Kate. (I can't wait for this seventies revival to pass.) I would love to see Kate maybe with a pretty diamante cami or a sequined jacket to wear with that skirt.

Red picks up the poppies nicely but I do wish she would buy evening shoes. They truly make an outfit. They needn't be sandals, there are lovely satin courts by designers she uses.

    1. Agree on a lot of this, Julia. I wish the 1970s cocktail party at the hubby's boss's house era of formal wear would finish up. This dress looks like something right out of "The Stepford Wives"!!
I WISH she would either buy evening shoes or wear the Jimmy Choo Vamp sandals she's got - and has worn! They are MADE to walk a red carpet and they look so good on her with a deep red pedicure!
The daytime court shoes just ruin this outfit, I think!

  15. I like this dress. As Lella says, it is not memorable but it is pretty and feminine. I think the flower embellishment at the neck is a lovely vintage detail. Adore the rich burgundy shade of the purse and shoes with the white dress. Not in love with these earrings with the dress. Rubies would have been perfect.

  17. I can go either way on the dress. I love the bottom and the flowiness and slit on the bottom. I don't love the top, but that is just my personal taste. The fit isn't the best in my opinion, but based on the models, I think it's the dress and not any tailoring. I love the red accents - fun and slightly outside her normal.

I am exited to see two events that are closely connected. I am glad there was a fun public one but also one that means a ton to the recovering addicts and their families.

  18. Va-va-voom! I like the slit in the skirt & the way the fabric billows around, but the crochet pattern of the top is a bit jarring. Does remind me of the See by Chloe dress in Canada but the pleated skirt saves this outfit for me, otherwise both dresses would've been 'meh!'. Love Bob the cat, such composure on the red carpet! :)

  19. The top half of the dress till the waist looks lovely, however I wish the lace could've continued all through instead of the pleated skirt. I agree with the others, this dress could've been designed better,, Thank You Charlotte!XOXO

  22. I like the dress and the entire look, however I would have preferred that she had done something with her hair - an up do or pulled back. It's getting long again, and I like when she cuts a few inches off, it seems more manageable. Of course my favorite photo was of Bob :)

    1. I agree about her hair.

I am a bit puzzled by this dress again, not because of the colour but the material, I have never seen a crocheted or eyelet dress or top or any clothes at the beginnning of winter, or at the end of autumn. I think this dress is not for this occassion/season, its silky fluffy light material was blown away easily, she was so close to reveal more again than anybody wanted to see.
I do not understand her choices lately. To be honest, very tired of her choices lately.

  23. I think the slit on the skirt of the dress was a bit dangerous - in a good breeze, it might have billowed up and been hard to control - she was hanging on to her hair - in a stronger wind, it would have been a messy hair event in order to hold on to the skirt. I would have tacked the skirt slit just about to below the knee.

    1. I thought the same thing. I'm rather surprised she didn't at least tack it to fall mid-thigh instead of pretty darn close to the danger zone!

  25. Ugh, looks like I'm going to have to find another style star to love. Kate is great, I love her so much, but dresses like this - make me cringe. So much fabric, always up to the neck, so much lace, white lace - how many white lace dresses does she own? Her fascination with high-necked, long-sleeved, long-length dresses is confusing! It doesn't look fresh and trendy or modern, which would be the only justification for wearing it in the first place - it just looks horribly dated - not the good 70's either. Like a prom gown from 1968. I don't understand it - she used to have THE knack for nailing an original-but-classic-flattering-fresh ensemble, like nobody else! Now....ugh. Once in a while I super-love something - the blue arrival suit in Canada was a knockout, as was that red cocktail dress same tour, but now there are always these high-necked, long-sleeved, multi-tiered or printed or heavy in some way kind of dresses in between the knock outs.

  26. Love the dress, love the burgundy accessories with it and the brooch. Still don't like slits, but this one fortunately doesn't detract too much from the beautiful dress. Wonderful look!

  27. She looks stunning to me! thank you Charlotte for a great post.

  28. It's weird how Kate follows some "modesty" looks but is so inconsistent. For instance, she now seems to favor high-necked, high-waisted, frilly, fussy gowns and thicker, tanner hose as well as demure suede pumps. Fine, looking royal, etc. But then she wears dresses with extremely high slits that show off so much leg and she still loves her above-the-knee skirts and skinny jeans. It's like she cuts her body in half -- super frumpy above the waist, a little provocative below the waist.

I think that's what bothers me about her look. I feel like she should balance it out more -- a less frumpy neckline and collar would look hipper than the grandma top with the too-high slit. Some trendier evening shoes for these occasions and less skinny jeans. Overall the look would be more consistent, more classic, MORE modest, but less frumpy.

  31. This is a "Kate" dress. Ivory in color (someone mentioned white but it looks cream to me), pleats, and lace. So many aspects that she favors. I thought it was appropriate for the event. And it certainly moves well (in the video). I don't think it photographed as well. The burgundy accessories - I'm glad they weren't red - work.

I would like to see how she'll accessorize this dress for a different event and I'm sure it'll be a different look. The daisies around the neck remind me a little of the '70's and so I think a side pony tail or pony tail of some sort would have been nice.

If she hadn't of worn something new I was thinking about the silver silk gown she has.

Wonder what she'll wear for Saturday's event.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nope. I cannot get on board with this look. The dress is not suited for the Fall season, and the suede shoes and purse can't make it so.

I'm experiencing irrational outbursts every time I see a photo of Kate holding her clutch as if it's a fig leaf. I'm hoping that more solo engagements increase her confidence.

    1. I brought up the fig leaf a while back and the comment was summarily dismissed. But I stand by it--she doesn't project confidence in that pose.

  33. Hmm when I look as good in any thing as she does, I'll venture a critique:). The dress was poetic IMHO. On a different not, I can never get over the noise she endures at these events. We see the still photos. But the videos give you the feel of it all. The videos have subdued sound and it'd still mind numbingly loud. I give her huge cudos for warm smiles and ever present graciousness. White is ever present any season here in the US now. I just don't prefer to blend in with the snow in the winter:).

  34. i loved her dress and the burgandy shoes and bag, however i think she should have worn garnett earinds as they are a darker red than rubys and would look nice with the shoes. we in the us haven't had the rule not to wear white after labor day for at least 15 to 20 years the stores in the us carry beautifl winter white clothing. just an after thought the picture of kate where her whit dress is billowing reminded me of the famous picture of marlin monroe. thanks charlotte

LOVE the fact that she did attend that recovery street film festival. It´s a great thing and I love how many very diverse things are happening in Britain to put focus on addiction in a really creative way. So many different aspects are highlighted and still I always get the impression that the focus is on "You can overcome addiction" - it´s inspiring rather than depressing... I wish we would handle this the same way here in Germany....
The dress was kind of "confusing" - I liked the lace and I liked the skirt and I liked the slit - just together it somehow didn´t work for me. I liked the shoes very much - but again, the fabric did not work very well with the fabric of the skirt. Plus, although I am not a fan of "no white after...." I also would have loved to see this dress at a summer evening engagement... So all in all, not one of my favourites.... In the end, though, what is important to me, it´s that she highlights all these positive causes with her presence...

Thank you for a great post, Charlotte. As for the dress, I'm sorry but I'm not a fan - I like the top half but not the combination with the skirt. However, I think the fashion is the least important part of these engagements. The video done by Ceri is deeply moving. I think such projects can really help people... realize and understand. Those of us who have never come through such things cannot even imagine. The "Street Cat Named Bob" film sounds really interesting, I loved the trailer. I'm definitely going to watch it if it comes to the Czech Republic.

  38. I like this dress, a lovely, gentle style that appears to be 'easy' to wear. I think perhaps Kate's hair in a side pony tail, as she sometimes wears it may have been nice.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I really wish that Kate would embrace the glamour that is part of her position and reflect it in her choice of clothing, especially at evening, red carpet events. Something along the lines of what she wore to the Thirty Club dinner at Claridge's in 2012--cream Roland Mouret, Jimmy Choo Vamp sandals (with red toenails!) and diamante clutch--would be perfect. This dress is just blah, kind of cheap looking, and ill-fitting. Also, I love the red shoes and clutch, just not with this dress.

With regard to the US rule of no white after Labor Day, this actually was the rule way back when, when men wore white belts and shoes (yes, I'm afraid they actually did) but that fashion trend is, thankfully, long gone.

  40. Fantastic choice of engagements and as ever, a great cause to support but the dress didn't do it for me, I'm afraid. It's good to see Kate experimenting with new designers and more edgy choices but there is just too much material in this dress which I thought with the high neckline, swamped her very slender figure.

  44. I like the dress (don't love or hate it), it's perhaps a bit matronly, but the high slit keeps it a little young and sexy. (I feel like it's a good thing there was some wind to blow it around a bit and show the slit). And it's pretty, I always like white dresses.

About the no white after Labor Day "rule", (Labor Day in the US being a marker of summer ending and autumn beginning), no one has really followed that or cared about that in decades. And I also think it may have been common more in the colder areas of the country.

The one thing I don't like about the ensemble is the red shoes with the red bag and red jewelry. Too matchy-matchy. (Which come to think of it, is also an old-fashioned notion....that your shoes should match your bag and other accessories).

I think the criticism regarding Kate's more recent sartorial choices compared to a few years ago, I think she is struggling now that she's older, firmly in her "mid" 30's now, mother of two, and a more visible and active member of the RF. She's under a lot of pressure to wear clothes that fit the part, while still being fashionable. It must be difficult. So she sometimes ends up with a more "matronly" look - high necks, lace (which to me is very matronly), etc.

Really fascinating to read the comments sometimes. We don't have some of these rules here in New Zealand. However when I went to live in London in my early twenties I found my favourite turquoise summer coat got covered with black marks after I wore it on the underground. I couldn't afford to keep getting it dry cleaned so maybe wearing white or light colours is affected by how clean the atmosphere is? Also someone commented about hanging clothes to dry outside. We still do that here in NZ. I only use the dryer occasionally and I live in a city with only a small garden. Clothes smell so much nicer dried in the sun and wind. My daughter used to live in a high rise apartment in Singapore and dried her washing on racks outside on her balcony - ditto in Amsterdam when she lived there. Is this unusual in Europe and in USA?

Hello Annette, here in the Czech Republic there are no rules as for the laundry, it's up to everyone. I would say most people dry their laundry out, though - in a garden, if they have one, or on a terrace or a balcony. Perhaps not their underwear but T-shirts, pants etc., as well as bed sheets - quite often
