William, Kate and Harry Outline Hopes for "Mental Health Marathon"

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry spoke at a briefing at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Carlton House Terrace today to outline the next phase of their mental health campaign, Heads Together, as efforts intensify to create millions of conversations on the topic in 2017.

Ahead of the royal arrival the Palace said: "Heads Together wants to use the privilege of being Charity of the Year for the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health. With fewer than 100 days to the London Marathon on Sunday 23rd April, Their Royal Highnesses will open up the Heads Together campaign to organisations to become supporters that can help get the country talking about mental health in 2017."

The royals were greeted upon arrival.

Heads Together has very much been a project the young royals are extremely passionate about. There were several reports of late suggesting the initiative was actually Kate's brainchild and, along with William and Harry, the trio felt it was a subject they could really put their stamp on. I've noted before one of the advantages of being second-in-line is the ability to devote one's attention to a cause such as this and other areas of interest. The stigma attached to mental health remains all too often, and the fear of judgement can stop those most in need getting help. Ultimately, this campaign is about getting people to talk and open up.

Today's engagement brought together Heads Together charity partners and supporters with leaders from the UK, ranging from media and technology to business and the voluntary sector. It was an opportunity for the royals and other speakers to preview some of the themes and initiatives people can expect to see in the months ahead. The main goal of the campaign in the run up to the marathon will be to show people how important it is to just start a conversation with a friend, family member, colleague, or a professional when dealing with a mental health challenge.

Below, the Duchess chatting with news presenter Sian Williams.

The royals met London Marathon, Heads Together runners and posed for photos.

The Mirror reports Kate was sceptical when she heard of William's plans to run a marathon in Kenya one day. More from The Mirror:

'Good Morning Britain presenter Sean Fletcher, who is running the 26.2 mile course for charity Young Minds after his 13-year-old son was recently diagnosed with OCD, said: "I chatted to Prince William and he has promised that he will run a marathon in Kenya sometime. "Then I spoke to Kate and she said 'I'll believe it when I see it'." The presenter added: "This is all very new to me, I'm learning very fast because of my son's situation.'

Kate adjusted Jon Salmon's headband before photos were taken.

The trio gave speeches outlining their vision for the campaign in 2017. William said "Mental health matters to each and every one of us. It matters just as much as our physical health. It's no exaggeration to say that conversations – simple conversations – can be life-changing. It is our ambition to make the Virgin Money London Marathon the Mental Health Marathon – to help change the conversation on mental health."

The Duchess added "We have heard time and time again in the course of our work how talking can help heal the hidden challenges we can’t deal with alone, So the question that William, Harry and I have asked ourselves is how we can get more people to start talking".

Prince Harry said "We can all help each other. You don't need any qualifications to help your mate, simply to listen to what they have to say. At the heart of this campaign is our hope that no-one should be afraid to ask for help, and no-one should worry about knowing how to help."

The full speeches from the Heads Together website:

Prince William -

'Thank you Sir Keith. And thank you to everyone here today for being enthusiastic about Heads Together. We launched the campaign last year and are extremely proud to support the life-changing work of our eight Charity Partners. We are also very grateful for the support of our Founding Partners. Mental health matters to each and every one of us. It matters just as much as our physical health.   The crews I have worked with, whether RAF Search and Rescue or Air Ambulance, must take their mental health as seriously as they do their physical health or else they would not cope – and, actually, that is true for everybody at some time or another in their life. There are times when, whoever we are, it is hard to cope with challenges – and when that happens being open and honest and asking for help is life-changing.
Talking to someone else is a positive and confident step to take – but for too long it has been a case of ‘Keep Quiet and Carry On’. As a result, too many people have suffered in silence for too long, and the effects of this can be devastating.
The three of us are really optimistic that things are changing.  We believe that 2017 can mark a tipping point for mental health – a moment when more and more people no longer feel they have to bear the weight alone for fear of judgment.
It is no exaggeration to say that conversations – simple conversations – can be life-changing: in a workplace, in your kitchen at home, with a friend, family member or colleague.  And that’s what Catherine, Harry and I want to do – we want more people to be having those conversations. It is our ambition to make this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon the Mental Health Marathon – a major opportunity to help change the conversation on mental health, and to get people talking.  And for that, we really need your help. '

The Duchess of Cambridge -

'As William has said we have heard time and time again in the course of our work how talking can help heal the hidden challenges we can’t deal with alone.  We have seen that two heads are better than one when dealing with a mental health problem.
Yet, the challenge that so many people have is not knowing how to take that first step of reaching out to another person for help.  Admitting that they are not coping.  Fear, or reticence, or a sense of not wanting to burden another, means that people suffer in silence – allowing the problem to grow larger and larger unchecked.
William, Harry and I have been very privileged to witness in the course of our work countless examples of simple conversations that have changed lives, which were the first step on a path to recovery.  Just last week at the Anna Freud Centre, I heard from one mother how talking to a support worker was – in her words – like medicine.  Simply by having someone there to have a conversation with helped her immensely.
So the question that William, Harry and I have asked ourselves is how we can get more people to start talking.  How do we encourage people to take the first step. What Heads Together is proposing is that in the weeks leading up to the Marathon, our campaign will showcase people from all walks of life, talking about the life-changing conversations that have helped them with their mental health challenges.
We hope that these real-life examples will serve as encouragement to others to do the same. If we succeed with this, we will have taken a powerful step in normalizing mental health as an issue in our society, thinking about it as we do our own physical health. Harry will explain more in a moment about what you can do to help us with this challenge. But first I would like to introduce Jon, who is running for Heads Together in the Marathon; and Steve, who will tell you the story of how a conversation made such a big difference to their mental health.
Jon and Steve … thank you. '

Prince Harry -

'Thank you, Jon and Steve, for sharing your conversation and the impact that it’s had on your lives; and thank you Jon for running for Heads Together. I’m reliably informed that you’ll run it in under four hours! Good luck with your training!
Over 500 people will be running for Heads Together, leading from the front (well perhaps not right at the front!), raising funds for the vital services provided by our Charity Partners. These runners will also be leading by example by starting conversations on mental health with their families, friends and colleagues.
It has been unbelievably encouraging to see that attitudes towards mental health across the country are beginning to change. In the past, the phrase ‘mental health’ would be translated to mental illness. But thankfully that is changing! As a result of family, school or work pressures, everyone’s lives are lived at a frightening pace and these stresses can often seem overwhelming.
Some will ignore the signs of stress, others will insist they’re ok after losing a loved one. Some will be afraid to ask for help, others won’t have anyone to turn to. One thing is certain, we are all wired differently. We all have mental health; and we’ll say it again and again and again, if you want to be fit, healthy and set yourself up for success then your mental fitness is absolutely as important as your physical fitness. Everyone would get help for a broken leg, so why not seek help for an issue that could hamper you and others around you.
The truth is we can all help each other. You don’t need any qualifications to help your mate out, simply to listen to what they have to say. At the heart of this campaign is our hope that no-one should be afraid to ask for help, and no-one should worry about knowing how to help. That initial conversation could be the cure, before it has a chance to manifest itself.
The BBC have announced today that they are running a season on mental health to coincide with the Marathon, which is fantastic news. But every single one of you in this room can help too. You are all role models and highly respected people in your industries – the way you talk about mental health will have a profound effect on millions of people, whether you’re speaking from personal experience or encouraging those around you to do the same. So please could I encourage you all to have a conversation with the Heads Together team, who are here today, and share your ideas. We need as many people as possible – famous or not – who can help showcase what it’s like to have a conversation with a friend, family or stranger. All your ideas are welcome. '

Rebecca English shared a video of Kate's portion.

It was hoped the young royals would announce plans to participate in the marathon. Richard Palmer reports security fears meant this could not be realised:

"The royal trio would have liked to compete but it was ruled out on the grounds that policing the 26-mile course through the capital would be a security nightmare. However, William, Kate and Harry will be cheering from the sidelines and plan to use the event on April 23 to promote their campaign to get Britain talking about mental health problems and how to overcome them."

Musician and singer Professor Green spoke eloquently to the press as he left. The artist made a very moving documentary, Suicide and Me, focusing on the suicide of his estranged father. It's a topic close to his heart and it's very encouraging to see high-profile figures getting involved and sharing their stories and views.

A lovely photo of William, Kate and Harry leaving the briefing.

I must say, I immediately loved the look of Kate's Erdem dress today. It is such a versatile and chic piece which could take the Duchess from a lunchtime briefing to an evening reception. Kate wore the designer's Evita Dress in Black Lily Collage.

Made in Portugal, the £1,050 dress is described: "Transitioning as effortlessly between seasons as it does from day to evening, the Evita Dress possesses an innate elegance. Vibrant lilies in yellow, green and blue boldly punctuate a light weight, textured black matelassé background; intensely gathered around the waist, neckline and down the sleeves, delicate sprigs fall freely on the skirt, adding free spirited appeal to the formality of the demure silhouette."

The Duchess teamed the dress with her popular Tod's Fringed Leather Pumps. Kate debuted the sold out £267 shoes during the Canada tour. They feature an almond toe, fringed detailing and a metal buckle.

Kate carried her Mulberry clutch.

And completed the look with her $190 Oscar de la Renta Hammered Gold-Plated, Faux Pearl Earrings.

And how amazing did Kate's hair look today?

A fantastic look for Kate today and great to see efforts for Heads Together continuing. I know some were disappointed we didn't hear more today, however, it was great to see all three talking, including Kate's reference to Anna Freud Centre reflecting on a conversation she had just last week. It's also excellent to see figures from the media and sports world getting behind them. My one peeve with the day: when the royals arrived and exited the car they were within very close proximity of several respected royal reporters and didn't greet them. Richard Palmer reported: "William noticeably blanked us all from two feet away. Charming." While Emily Andrews added: "Said hello and Wills ignored... Oh dear." I thought it quite poor behaviour given the support the media has shown for Heads Together and entirely unnecessary to put a dampener on a positive event for their campaign. We're never going to see the royals having conversations with the press at engagements (although, a quick informal chat with reporters on the initiative would have really amped up the event), but when one is in a situation where they are greeted upon arrival, it's costs nothing to be polite - especially considering today was all about spreading the word on their ambitions for Heads Together. The relationship between the Royal family and the media needs to be fostered and a little gesture such as "hello" goes a long way...

  1. Kate looks very pretty today. Those shoes with with the dress confused me at first but now I see she is picking up on the burgundy accents in the dress.

I am still confused on the goals/initiatives of Heads Together. It seems to be a lot of buzz words but no substance.

    1. Even Richard Palmer who was at the event, could only say when he was asked about the initiatives:" Um"

      My translation: talk, talk, talk
But to be honest, the early press release from KP promised a hell lot more.

    2. From what I can tell they are encouraging people to talk to each other.

    3. It would be nice if anyone even knew who the "partners" were. From what I could tell from Charlotte's wording -- it seems like they were appealing to organizations to support/fund the Richard Branson branded marathon? Honestly, their vagueness is not helping their mission/goals at all. And touting Kate as the brainchild for a cause no one understands isn't exactly reflecting well on her abilities as a leader. Oh well, they'll be involved in something else next week.

    4. Yes, they are trying to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage people to reach out to others. I know it doesn't sound impressive but if they can start a conversational movement and change attitudes it will be a bjg deal.

    5. I must say that I'm surprised at how brief this briefing was... I expected more today. I must say that last year the campaign really got off the ground, they officially launched the campaign and it seemed like a lot of progress was made. So my question is, why go back to the planning stages of having a briefing? And a rather short one at that. I would like to see more proactive work with this campaign, I would like to see them visiting schools and actually talking to the kids who have benefited from the campaign. I really hope that the royal trio do not confine themselves to the conferences, fundraisers, gala dinners and speeches of this campaign. I would like to see them break more ground on this topic.

I really like her dress, the print, the style, the length. I also like her longer length dresses, she pulls both off beautifully. I really like these shoes and the way William's tie compliments Kate's clutch bag. I would also like to know if Kate wears hair extensions?

    6. Exactly, Bluhare, that is the whole purpose of the campaign. To encourage people to talk openly about problems they were previously not comfortable to do. They are also bringing on more higher profile people to encourage the conversation.

@Erika: That's exactly their aim, thank you! To destigmatize & encourage conversation, encourage people to talk & reach out for guidance, solace, help, etc. Their platform might seem "vague" to some but I think it's due to its all-encompassing nature. This is a platform that will evolve over time. I applaud them!

      Delete
    9. Talking openly about something is important, as JN and Erika said, even if it's just being able to say the *name* of a disease openly. Not terribly long ago they wouldn't say the word pregnant on TV, how ridiculous is that! So I do think just talking is a step.

However I think they've already initiated that, and this was a bit anti-climactic given the release. I think their plans miss a lot of important execution. They have an amazing platform anyone with a cause would envy. They have very worthy causes that well deserve that platform.

They need help conveying what they want the public to do, do you want me to raise money? Volunteer at an event? Do you want me to be able to talk to someone who's having problems? If the last one is the case, just sharing the basic tips on one of the Heads Together leaflets would be a big improvement. We want someone struggling with depression or another mental illness to be able to admit that without fear of stigma, but then what do I do in response?
A little role playing between all three of them on stage would have been a fantastic exercise and great images for the press.

Which brings me to my last point, they need a good and productive relationship with whoever or whatever is going to get their message across, the press :) You may have reasons to dislike them, but they are a reality in your life. Use them to your advantage.

I remember Diana saying (forgive me not an exact quote) "I've got all these cameras that follow me around, why not take them somewhere where they can shine a light on something that needs attention"

    10. I wish that they would do a small press conference, perhaps at the close of each of these events, to talk specifically to reporters and answer questions. It would go a long way to shoring up the deteriorating relationship between the young royals and the royal reporters and it would help the public better understand what the point is of each of these events.
I know the reporters are there but being at an event and being able to ask the keynote speakers questions and get answer from them is two separate things. They need to be doing both at these events. I think those q and a sessions would go a long way toward helping Kate gain some confidence in her public speaking abilities. There's not the pressure in a press gaggle that there is in a formal speaking event.

    11. I think they are really missing a piece of the puzzle here. Cuz if someone starts talking to me about suicide and I don't have any professional resources to direct them to -- what is the point? Honestly, if they would just start mentioning some mental health resources and partners every time they were out and about I could understand. But pretty much the only name that got shouted out was Virgin and I don't think they are the ones you are suppose to call when a friend is having trouble.

      Delete
    12. I agree. This is a very, very important cause, one that doesn't get nearly enough attention, and I've been so excited since they decided to take it on and sort of make it their "signature issue." It's a great thing. But it's time to really step up to the next level. Royal reporters were right THERE, wanting to know more, and to brush them off and have a brief meeting with no solid message coming out was a lost opportunity. I'm looking forward to what happens next. (like the dress, very different, bold accessory matching, yay!)

    13. They seem to be addressing the marathon more than anything. I expected to hear plans for the whole year, but we didn't. That is okay. Kate mentioned that they will be sharing more conversations from real people to help others initiate that difficult step. Harry mentioned a mental health feature with BBC. And there's this mental health documentary. Maybe many of their plans are under wraps? It seems like it. After the marathon, we will see what happens. Already William is zoning in on workplace mental health and cyberbullying. I think that's exactly how they should expand. This charity is only in its infancy and has so much potential. Don't count it out yet. The PM is already talking about it and has made mental health a priority!

      Delete
    14. That's a realistic take/overview on the whole thing Susie. wow. A lot of sepecifics they mentioned that we may have overlooked. I didn't know that the PM had even come onboard. That reaches Parliament and Parliament reaches....... already having a powerful impact. Even here with people on this blog who say they have been helped and encouraged by what W/K/H have done so far. neat.

  3. My goodness your fast! Well well, I say this is the best she's looked in ages. It's hard to tell but to my eye she's not wearing stockings. She looks real for the first time in maybe ever. The hair is huge, but it looks like it used to back in the day. The clutch and shoes pick up an accent color in the dress. I don't think we've seen her make that happen in the past either. Goodbye coat dress, stocking and matching shoes. We need a break already. Well done.

As for the substance of the event, let's just hope they start taking their work seriously. It's a pity to continue to waste such a position in society.

    1. Totally agree, especially about the stockings! I've been sad to see her legs resemble Camilla's and the Queen's lately - thick, pale stockings that wrinkle at the toe, ugh! I miss the bare-leg days, as we can see here (if she is in fact bare legged, hard to tell) it is totally appropriate, more so than the hose IMO! This look is gorgeous! Love the dress, the length, fabric, etc. Fresh and appropriate, not frumpy and dated! YAY!!!!

    2. Please pardon if this thought repeats someone else's comment-not that repetition has stopped anyone here before-Ha! But, if one is confused about the purpose and partners of the Heads Together initiative, one must not have been reading Charlotte's posts. She is quite clear in this. Most importantly, Charlotte has allowed the types of discussions here recently that encourage the sharing of mental health issues and concerns with the move toward a named community.

At first I thought they didn't go buy now I see the burgundy flowers on the dress she chose to highlight with the shoes and purse. Her hair looks so big and gorgeous too and I love her makeup, very pretty.

A big win of a look for me!

And a speech! If she looked up more it would be better, but perhaps she did in other parts of the speech or maybe it is something she is still working on.

    1. I remember with outfits like this on "What Not To Wear", when the contributor would say, "But this doesn't match." Stacy and Clinton would, almost in unison say, "It doesn't match. It goes." (goes with the outfit without being as matchy, matchy.) I, like, bluhare, love matchy matchy (as long as it is done right, of course), but I occasionally like the "it goes" outfits also.
This one I had to stop, at first, and find where all the "it goes" parts were. I didn't see the burgundy flowers right away, nor her purse. At first it didn't look cohesive to me. Then I found them. She looks beautiful and more Queen-like everyday. :)

    2. Shoes, purse match William's tie. The rest doesn't count. :+) Surfer girl-does that stand for internet surfing? I keep thinking of you on a beach-that doesn't Go with the rest of your online persona somehow- At any rate,my matchey inclinations were formed during the 50's and 60's, when dyed to match was the name of the game. I recall prom ritual of a trip to the shoe store to purchase new white satin pumps. One would take a sample of the material of one's gown for perfect matching. One year, my dress was black chiffon skirt with a metallic top so I could have the previous prom shoes dyed over.

    3. Annie, yes, like I said previously and these days I am a more of a retired body surfer/windsurfer as I indicated before. It is sometimes with a strong tinge of meloncholy that I sit on the beach and watch the younger ones doing what I so would like to be able to do still. (Just went through that yesterday as a matter of fact so it is funny that you brought that up.) But I do dip in and swim when the surf is gentler and go kayaking in the bay, which I love, love, love, and fishing on the boat whenever my son is here and decides he wouldn't mind having his mom tag along. And as long as I can see the ocean everyday, I'm good. :) Very blessed. Sorry, didn't mean to ramble. Don't get me started talking about the ocean, lol. It is one of my happy places for sure. Fun surfing the web on the beach though. Obviously, I do that a lot. :)

I love their trio-speeches. It shows such a united front, which is especially impactful and important when talking about mental health!

Good speech as well. But I'm a bit surprised at how vauge it is. I thought it would be more.. I don't know.. clear in focus since they said it would outline the way forward. Still nice speeches, but not what I expected.

I like that this might have been Kate's brainchild :) Somehow, it makes sense!

Great dress and very fully styled. I love how she picked up the burgundy colours! And her hair looks so shiny and great!

That being said, I do look forward to seeing what this year brings and especially what comes of Heads Together! It's a very exciting time coming up!

    1. I got a sense of deja vu when I heard their speeches...weren't they conveying a similar message from their speeches at the launch almost a year ago? But with not much new to add this time...I'm a little disappointed to be honest. Like you said Rebecca, I thought there would be more of a clear goal, it was a bit vague. But great to see the trio out supporting this initiative, nonetheless.

I'm with you Rebecca on this - well, I often am. I've actually spent some time trying to read about Heads Together and its goals because I expected something a bit more today - it seems a repeat of what we've already heard.

The best I can come up with is that William, Harry and Kate are hoping their high profile will make mental health a more acceptable subject for discussion - not unlike what Diana did with AIDS and by bringing these eight charities together - it will increase both dialogue between them and fund-raising for them and that by bringing attention to the work of these charities and others that it will encourage people to get help and be aware of where to get it which can be an important aspect. All this is hugely important. But I did think as Rebecca said there would be more of an outline on how dialogue is to be achieved and well, something more than what's been said already.

One thing I've found very touching in the past few posts is the willingness of those who participate here to open up about personal issues and the encouragement and support we have tied to extend to each other - and what I believe is the enormous good will that is behind that - even if on other topics we don't always agree. I attribute that in part to Charlotte's gentle and warm encouragement but the fact that William and Kate are working in these areas has also triggered discussions. So I like to feel this blog is a tiny representation of how discussion can take place.

Still, I do feel to encourage discussion, especially amongst the young - there needs to be a more concrete plan then just saying to do it - everyone agrees stigmas should vanish - but I can still see concerns that the threesome haven't addressed. So I'll throw one out there and see if people here can come up with others.

One of the great issues of stigma is the fear knowledge of mental health concerns can interfere with present or future employment. William and Kate are seeking financial support in the corporate world but perhaps there should be an attempt to encourage that world to be more open to admitting employees can have difficulties. Personally, my severe phobia about flying touched on my work in the past - and became an issue - even as I struggled to make certain it didn't stop me from business travel, other employees commented upon it. This is just the tip of this issue. I've known people who suffered from depression who were frightened to admit it - people who found learning issues such as dyslexia interfered with their career plans.
One problem with William, Kate and Harry is there has been almost nothing personal at a deep level said by them - we know Diana had issues she herself addressed such as post-pregnancy depression but this has never been raised - of course, it is a very private matter - but that's the whole point - for everyone it is a private matter and for a private individual who has to worry about employment, relationship and family prospects, it is just as sensitive as it is a for a royal. Maybe it's time for a royal example to get this dialogue started.

As for her dress, it's lovely, love the shoes but wish she would pull her hair back into something more professional and less beauty queen in volume. But it did look very nice.

    3. Yes Julia, I want to hear from William, Kate & Harry specifically why they chose mental health as a cause to highlight, is it from personal experience ie. they have had difficulties themselves or I assume it's due to Diana's troubles etc. I know it is very personal, but it would make me feel more engaged/connected to the cause that they are wishing to promote, if they gave more of an insight into the affects mental health has had on them. I'm wondering if they opened up about their own experiences, would that encourage a more open discussion & break the stigma?

      Delete
    4. I agree with you, Julia, the young royals could sit down, choose a royal reporter and give an interview, why they think and choose this mental health campaign. By giving their own away, could affect soooo many people, rather than reading out twice the same or similar speeches.

    5. Rebecca - Sweden17 January 2017 at 16:01

I agree Julia! What they are already doing IS good. They are getting people talking on blogs etc. And that is a great start. But there is a core... a goal... missing. And so far, that is kind of OK. This is a huge issue with no simple solution. I hope the upcoming documentary will help get some deapth. There is a solid start and great possibility with this organization. But it's just the "umph!" thing that is missing so far. And it might come at a later date, it's way to early to tell if this is going to be successfull or not. And even if it isn't, it's a great step towards umbrella organizations and bigger issues. But there is great possibility and I hope it manages to get it's footing because it can really do alot of good! Im not sure the royals opening up more right now is the solution. People has a tendency to turn it around and ccall it "complaining" (Which is total BS!), but I do hope they really study this topic and get greater knowledge. What Professor Green discussed was great, and with some more knowledge, something like that, said by the royals, could have great impact. I don't know what the answer is, I just felt that today would be something other than it was. Today was nice, it was nice speeches (that we've kind of heard before) and nice sentiments. It was nothing wrong with it. But it wasn't the step up that I expected.

Respect, kindness, compassion, even in our criticisms of each other and of William and Kate and her family, etc. are seemingly becoming the norm here now. We are progressing, as you said, and it is becoming better world here on DKB, in my opinion. :)

    7. The shoes are practical, classic and nice pair. The few times Kate wore them they remind me more of a conservative professional, a school principal of times gone, or a mother. For Kate's age, she can be in and out those styles as a 30 something mom. For this occasion, it has worked out. In a way it is an understanding that, even with an exciting new dress, you can make do with what is in your closet and make it work.

Here, more absorbed with style today, and later more posts to read and access the videos from today after making time.

    8. Julia, I think you hit the nail on the head! I totally agree! Talking about these issues will of course help but they (the royals) really aren't doing anything proactive to really change things. I thought your suggestion concerning the the corporate world an excellent and inciteful one!

    9. Excellent analysis Julia! I too was disappointed that there was no action plan. In her speech, Kate mentioned her conversation at the Anna Freud function last week with a mom who said working with a therapist was like medicine. So how do we make therapists more available and in a more "casual" way? What I mean by "casual" is that consulting a therapist for a fear or worry become as natural as going to a chiropractor for adjusting your back or a nutritionist for help with an eating disorder. Hmm, as I write this I realize that such holistic treatment is still fairly new--most people still only go to their GP or self-medicate. I only recently saw an example of this kind of triaging when I went to a doctor last year because I was having major issues falling asleep. Instead of just handing over a scrip for sleeping pills, the doc checked for a physical explanation and then a therapist came in and with gentle prodding asked me if there was anything else going on. But it is so hard to open up, to find the words to express how one feels about what is happening in one's life! That is the issue that you highlighted so well Julia! To create a society where we feel safe talking about our weaknesses and phobias. To feel that people will listen non-judgmentally and help in a non-directive, "you must do this or else" way. HOW to create such a society, the groundwork that should be laid in our homes, schools and workplaces, is what I hope Heads Together will come out with. And I am disappointed that today's event seems to still be stuck in the "mental health is important and we should do something about it" phase.

On another note, I too am disappointed at the rude behavior toward the Royal reporters that you pointed out Charlotte. Why did they do that? I know some will say that they have always done that but I didn't think they had ever been out and out rude? I remember their appearing with George and answering reporter's questions. But now that I think of it, that is the last time I remember either of them doing an impromptu, unstaged "question and answer." So I am eating humble pie here and saying that I finally see what some of you have been saying about the need for a better relationship with the Press.

I'm just going to give an example of something that happened to me:
Julia - on travel with three co-workers twenty years ago in the interest of honest dialogue: "I'm utterly terrified of flying, go weak at the knees, but I love this job and am going to manage ..." Three colleagues express support.
Short time later boss calls Julia in. "I understand you have an issue with flying...we've had some negative reports about how this is causing problems with your co-workers. I hope this isn't going to interfere further..."
Julia - (wondering which of the three told boss...and regretting she ever said anything to anyone...) "No, I'm fine really, I'm doing all right..." (as my last three business trips should have told you.) "I'm sorry if someone thinks it's interfering with my work..."
Soon after, next level boss from head office: "I understand there is a problem with travel..." Julia (frantic by now because she needs this job, as scared of flying as ever and by now anxious and stressed, wondering whom she can trust, defends herself as strongly as she can, pointing out she doesn't think it's appropriate for boss to accept talk about her without telling her who it said it.)
Very big boss comes to town Julia decides she is going to say something about this how this whole mess was handled - boss next level down rushes in "I know we didn't deal with this as well as we might have, but please don't say anything..."

Stopping stigma is an excellent thing, encouraging dialogue is an excellent thing but these are also extremely difficult things because until the former is strongly addressed, the latter is always going to be a problem. Preventing stigma from attaching is going to take more than just saying it should happen and that being open about talking will deal with it.
One reason royal duties have always entailed a lot of tree planing, hand-shaking, and ribbon cutting is that royal life isn't terribly compatible with dealing with extremely difficult issues. Diana with a handshake can make a statement but actually delving deep into an issue and not sounding glib is much harder. It's lovely to say "let's talk" but not as easy as it sounds. That's one reason, for better or worse, most royals have not tried to go far beyond supportive roles. Should they now? I don't know. But I do know they've just repeated today what was said earlier and something more substantive should have been said.
Yes, if one of the three had said something personal, it would have been misinterpreted by someone, but so were Julia's remarks by her co-workers. William, Kate and Harry are asking others to expose themselves to possible misinterpretation and even ridicule, so to say they shouldn't speak out personally seems backwards to me. I don't know what the answer is, just that having started this, they need to do a more complete job of following through.

    12. Julia, it took a lot of chutzpah to tell that story. I appreciated it and thank you. One little thought-wasn't William's (and Harry's)sharing of his overwhelming feelings about his Mother's death opening up? It was at an appropriate time in an appropriate place. I don't think today's organizational meeting to announce plans was an appropriate time. I almost wish Charlotte would print side-by-side copies of the HT launch speeches and these today. I think Kate's is much better written and I felt it was very touching. Since Charlotte has already added the entire contents of all three speeches, I certainly can't expect more. I do think, before anyone dismisses these speeches as being copies of the launch ones, it might be instructive to re read those other speeches. ok-two or three thoughts

Did Kate finally get a new hairdresser? Her hair looks amazing!!!!! It is amazing the difference in her hair from that scout engagement until now. It really reminds me of her blowouts at the start of her marriage which I was always a fan of.
    The dress was amazing. AMAZING!
But the shoes don't really match. They are too clunky for the dress.
I am even more convinced she is pregnant after this appearance
Also did anyone see on twitter that the reporters were saying that when they said good morning to william kate and harry they were out right ignored? And then when they left someone yelled bye and was ignored again (although I think that bye was said in sarcasm because they were ignored earlier)
They need to stop treating the people who promote their work with such contempt. No one would hear of their work otherwise because the KP twitter feed can't reach as many people as newspapers and websites can.

@Erika: We seem to be on the same page today lol. I thought the same thing...this dress doesn't contribute to those pregnancy rumors at all. She looks amazing, very much like the "old" Kate. Those who say she looks fuller in the face...I think it's a different fullness than when she was pregnant. When my daughter neared her 2nd birthday, I noticed some of the weight I lost from nursing, sleep deprivation, exhaustion, etc came back even with a workout regime! A woman's body can be so mysterious haha.

    6. Upon reflection, I do think they are not knowingly going to antagonize or be rude to their press corps. That's not their M.O.
I think it was just loud around them and they were focused on something about the event. We can all be overly sentitive at times, perhaps the reporters were this morning. Certainly, W/K/H didn't give them dirty looks, grunt at them or worse. Gotta keep it in perspective, in my opinion.

It seems odd that all three don't do anything which gives me the impression that maybe they had decided not to make contact with the press beforehand, but for what reason?

I love when she gives speeches, but it seems so forced sometimes when she constantly reads, like every four words...and those awkward quick glances to the reporters....sometimes she makes eye contact, sometimes it's so quick it just seems weird. In my opinion, shorts speeches like this one should be memorized. It would be lovely to see her feeling confident enough to carry small speeches like this one without reading her notes so much.

Like Court, the tailored Tod's initially confused me but the more I look at this combination, the more I like it. Agree with Emma in Ca..... her eyebrows are to die for today, and, yes, LAkate, Kate's hair is back to it's former glory. I am wowed which hasn't happened in a long time.

She chose to coordinate with the sprinkle of the understated maroon color on the dress (between wine, maroon, and burgundy kind of color). It is a solid heel pair, but for the style of the dress, hope for future and different occasion, she will find a compatible style pair of shoes for the dress.

Right now, the dress is hitting my head. It is a memorably striking, outstanding, elegant, vibrant imagery of color over black, well chosen for the occasion. For style interpreters and symbolic imagers, meaningfully artistic, modern, age appropriate, and as usual Kate carried her style well.

  17. Charlotte, I agree with you! My very first impression upon seeing the first photo, was WOW, I lOVE that dress. (And that Kate's hair looks wonderful today). And then I immediately scrolled down to see who the designer is, although I did suspect Erdem. I really hope Kate continues to wear Erdem (I am still disappointed she didn't wear the Erdem gown I chose for her for the Canada tour!). Anyway, I agree with Penny that this is one of my favorite's that she's ever worn! (but agree with the shoes not being quite right).

I think upon seeing Kate today and comparing her to last week's appointment at the Anna Freud center, is that likely some days she is more tired than others, as a working mother I know how that is. When I'm feeling more energetic and well-rested, I put in more of an effort. Maybe she just felt a little "off" last week.

  20. I went out and googled to see the whole context of the speech, and I understand that what the trio is doing, and their intent; after reading through all three parts of the speech.

There is, and always has been, a stigma for someone to say I'm in a bad place and I need help. Their focus is to remove the stigma and make the conversations more normal place.

Make them conversations that could happen in a coffee shop or a kitchen; and you don't have to feel ashamed.

With the position of the initiative as a headline charity of the marathon it's a chance to get more attention on their work.

From the Duchess speech "What Heads Together is proposing is that in the weeks leading up to the Marathon, our campaign will showcase people from all walks of life, talking about the life-changing conversations that have helped them with their mental health challenges."

They will show examples of how talking and having someone listen can be life changing and a turning point.

It may not seem like a lot, from some of the comments I've read so far, but in my experience it's the exact right spot to start. I'll share that I have had many points where the environment in my brain was dark and I didn't feel like I could talk to anyone for fear of judgement.

They are also expanding the participation in Heads Together, asking more partners to become involved and help normalize the topic.

I believe from the expanded partnership we'll see new ideas and new avenues.

These are just my humble thoughts on this very important topic.

And, I have noticed that the bouquets that Kate has been receiving in the past year or so definitely match the outfits that she wears to the events. Score another point for the PR team.

  22. That's so odd. That doesn't sound at all like the them I have come to know over the years. I give them the benefit of the doubt therefore. It is better to judge on the side of mercy, particularly when the full story is unavailable and the motives can only be speculated.

I shudder to hear the criticism here that this will generate since even very much smaller things, even positive things, have previously created so much intense criticism towards William and Kate.

I have before in my life neglected, in various situations, to say hi to friends at times. I know I am not a public figure with my own press corp, but my reasons were for not saying hi were not deliberate or done out of arrogance. The reasons were different at different times and usually had nothing to do with any hard feelings, etc. towards my friends. I am sure there is a good explanation for this from them also.

    1. This is an area I always enjoy discussing surfer girl :) but I have a different take.

I think William wanted so far away from the BP suits that he went too far in the opposite direction. He needs experienced people who fall somewhere in the middle, and he needs to understand that they're the experts, he needs to follow their guidance.

I think he must view his communications/press staff as people who do what he tells them, where it has to be more the other way around. You hire PR people because they have valuable insight and experience into handling high profile people and projects.

It's like going to the doctor but ignoring what he tells you ;)

    3. It's true that Charles *pays* their office expenses, but I believe William interviewed Jason Knauf extensively himself and was instrumental in his selection. I doubt he, or anyone else, would be hired without William's approval. That said, it likely creates an odd work environment if it's *perceived* there's two bosses, one who pays the bills, one who gives marching orders.

In my opinion, I think Charles pays the bills but leaves the decisions and overall approach their office takes to the three of them. Major steps I'm sure have to be run by Clarence House or BP.

    1. The team that Will, Kate and Harry have in place was hired and appointed by them, not by the Palace and consists of people their own age who are essentially a pack of "yes-men" and "yes-women." It IS the old-school (is anything the Windsors do every new school???) Palace mentality but in the people that Will and Harry and Kate have hired themselves.
Hopefully someone, Charles would seem the obvious choice here, would sit them down and let them know that they aren't the darlings of the media and the public that they were five and six years ago.

    2. I love her Gianvitto's and they would have looked great here but maybe more of an evening or formal event? It's a dressy dress and I think the loafers made it more day/engagement appropriate. It's a reach, I agree with you, but I think it does work. I'm kind of tired of her beauty pageant at serious engagements look. So this, in that sense, is progress to me at least. And I'm thrilled she didn't go with black shoes and bag.

    3. Elizabeth, Richard Palmer noted that all the royals with the exception of Camilla do the same. So how do you expect Charles to right the wrong when he taught it? I once read an article that said the Queen does not acknowledge the press or cameras because it invokes a celebrity image and she does not see the royals as celebrities. This been said a simple hello or good bye never hurt anyone.

      Delete
    4. @JN, I get what you are saying, but I do think that the younger Royals, Kate/ William/ Harry etc., fulfill a different role towards the public that the Queen does not - their role has been that of the young, more lively, closer to the public and approachable royals where the Queen's role is more about the stately symbol she represents. I have always viewed the younger royals as being the ones bridging the gap between the general public and the Queen/ Royal Family, soit would be unfortunate if they lost this image to the general public. I am sure that there was a reason for doing so as they generally seem quite friendly and approachable, but unfortunally we don't know what that reason is.

  27. I thought the dress was lovely and Kate looked beautiful. The shoes are a bit clunky for this feminine dress (loved them with her winter coat), so a different shoe would have been a better pairing, in my opinion.

I know most of you must be tired of me banging on about their PR whiffs, but good grief how hard is it to greet the press with a hello? I almost expect this dismissal from William, but Kate? Was it preplanned that they would ignore the press? Did Kate take her cues from William on the spot and decide to ignore them too? Is Harry still mad over Meghan? What's with this crew?

My message to Kate: Don't take PR direction from your husband, or he'll take you down with him. Be the example of how it's possible to have a successful relationship with the press. You show them basic courtesy and kindness and they in turn will be more likely to highlight your causes and frame their stories showing you in a favorable light. That's how it works. It's human nature.

The royal family is going to have to work very hard and very smart to keep the public on board with funding a monarchy after the Queen passes. The press is a big part of that equation. The flood gates of public resentment will swing wide open when that time comes, and if the rest of the family hasn't built up a mountain of goodwill by then, they're in trouble.

    1. When the trio was arriving by car, it was William who went out on the press side. When they departed, it was Harry on their side. On both times, Kate was on the opposite side. None of them said hello, and when one of the photographers said 'bye' when they left, there was no acknowledgement even from Harry. This, of course, is a normal occurrence for all royals except Camilla. (Richard Palmer's words, not mine). I do think it can be improved but it is not unusual. At least Kate looked straight at the press and gave them a smile on the way out. At this point it's as good as it gets :)

    3. Susie, I've watched two videos, one of them departing and the other upon arrival. I didn't see any signs of acknowledgement from the trio, but maybe I missed it. What a great opportunity it would have been for the three of them to go over to the royal reporters, with whom they are very familiar, and say a few words about how happy they are to be there this morning and how excited they are to kick off the new year with Heads Together. Afterwards, wish the assembled press a very happy new year. Boom.

Someone above said Camilla says hello and waves to media. Good for her. She knows the public holds a grudge, and positive articles by the press has helped to soften hearts. Her rehabilitation has been a huge PR success (perhaps, miracle).

What a wonderful cause they have dedicated themselves to.

    1. I suspect once the royal reporters stop making unfriendly comments on twitter, the royals would be more disposed to friendly gestures in return. I wasn't there. Everything that happened is not shown. I think a nod would be nice. Sort of to put on account in the quid pro quo department. The problem is, it seems everytime William unbends and shares with the press he gets it flung back in his face. I think it rather odd for those two reporters to be complaining, considering the history. Also, it is another pre-emptive strike, in my opinion, to deflect the news of good the three have done today. It may have just been another one of his frequent rants and not meant to cast a shadow on what I thought were immensely heart-felt words. I was especially touched by what Catherine said. Harry's reference to "blokes" was also a nice touch. Finally, if the Cambridges had nodded to each and every reporter and photographer there, the couple would look like a couple of bobble figures one can see in the rear windows of cars. Who to single out for recognition? The simplest answer is no one.

Annie-they make unfriendly comments because william, kate and harry treat them like crap. They all like working with charles and camilla because they are generally friendly and you know, actually look and acknowledge them when they show up for engagements
and the history you are referring to is I assume princess diana. that happened 20 years ago and most of these reporters were not involved in all that drama
additionally, the press already does william and kate huge favors by not publishing pap photos of the kids. there is no law preventing them and they do it as a favor.
William has never unbended in regards to the press in his life.

Surfer girl- they never acknowledge them at any engagement. And who can forget that incident at the tiger nest where they had the tv crews and reporters hike halfway up only to be told they couldn't go to the end with William and Kate because they wanted "private time" which was so ridiculous because they was a tour and the whole hike was a public engagement
And who can forget that hysterical letter last summer about the paparazzi

    7. I can understand why none of them have great feelings about the press -- the phone hacking scandal was an incredible violation of privacy at the very least -- but there is this thing called the high road, and they should be on it.

There is one big reason for that. If they're going to do these initiatives, they need them publicised. And guess who does that. So being at least polite and civil seems like the minimum they should do.

    8. Rebecca - Sweden18 January 2017 at 00:37

Exactly bluhare. It sucks. Media has done some truly crappy things. But first of all, they have to learn to see that the media doing the worst things are mostly not the same ones that are at their engagements. (Although, if I remember correctly it was the Sun who did the hacking and Emily is from there).

And also, it's just a grin it and bear it kind of situation. It's the "I have to smile and play nice to get this buissness deal even though the wife is a blatant racist and the customer is a total bore"-kind of buissness thing that sometimes is the bad side of careers.

So, I understand them.. but I agree that they should just say hi. I mean... we're not asking for an interview. It's a "Hi!".

I'm so tired of them acting like their life is such a hardship cos some reporters and photographers want to cover them.

  34. Omg she is simply stunning! And in an Erdem gown, I am NOT a fan of the label, but this dress is FANTASTIC!!!! Love everything about it from the length, to the fit, the waist is at the perfect place - the long sleeve doesn't look frumpy the way her fuller long sleeves (so 70's) do, they are elegant and smart - and the fabric is fantastic! A heavier twill or weave is perfect for the season, doesn't need a coat, stays in place, etc and the print is so chic! Not too fussy, too floral, but perfectly colorful and on a chic black background which looked amazeballs with her hair! Omg the hair is back! Love the slightly more to the side part, and the color and curls are pretty glorious. Make up is amazing too, and the shoes and clutch - well, I guess I'm gushing! I've missed this perfectly pulled-together Kate so much, perfect proportions, fabric, fit, etc. Just lovely! And I think this dress would look fantastic with a sleek pony tail. Can't wait to see her recycle! :) Win win win!

    2. annie, that's true! On Kate it is perfection - it could have just been a happy 'accident' that it hit her there judging by how many misplaced waist lines she's been wearing lately, but I hope not. I hope she will wear the waist where she wore it today, at her natural waistline. Proportion is everything!!! Length is also a part of that, which I feel she has been failing at as well in the last couple of years. So many long, heavy, frumpy dresses! And even the shorter ones are often an inch too long - very mumsy. This was the perfect length for a slim fitted dress. imo. :)

  36. This year is also Princess Diana’s 20th year. The way they celebrated her life ten years ago including Kate was nice. How they coordinated might be a beginning of an interesting year going forward. William will take on a full time duty immediately after her August Anniversary then. He has known Kate more years than his own mother. What an amazing relationship. The number of years with a parent should not necessarily be comparative with that of partnership, as it is forever bonded in childhood and formative years. Still, he had been lucky with love, and his mother would have been very happy for him.

As to the occasional discussion of Harry with Meghan, it seems every relationship he has with a lady puts the interested public in an overdrive. To be honest, the reality can be, like any young person, he forms a relationship and companionship. It may, or may not lead to the altar. In the meantime, to be in a happy relationship should be any body’s right as should be his.

  37. While I agree that, in light of the strain between the royals and the media, a simple greeting or response from the royals goes a long way, it is entirely possible someone was having a bad day, which dampened the trio's response, or even that William and Kate (or William and Harry) might have had a disagreement earlier in the day and made things uncomfortable for them. These are normal things in the course of life, and while they are not serious, I think a random day where William did not respond to a greeting in excusable. Given the conversations William has been having about his mother lately, in an attempt to help others, he may have been preoccupied with missing her. In truth, I doubt we'll know why - it's entirely possible he was just being rude - but I think overanalyzation of every small thing or slight the royals do also contributes to the strain between the media and the royals. As I said...I think they are allowed to have off days.

I love that they have made mental health such a passion project. Having suffered from PPD, I know how hard it is to reach out and spent a lot of time putting on a brave face and trying to appear normal. I felt like it was just a lot of things I was doing wrong, or was being too lazy to do, etc., and I felt ashamed of that, while at the same time not knowing how to fix what was going wrong in my life. After I started treatment, it still took several months for me to be comfortable speaking about it. And when I went off my medication and had to adjust to life full of the anxiety and feelings of overwhelm that I had felt before, I had to figure out ways to manage those and not apologize or feel bad for the time it took me to figure it out. During this process, reading about William, Kate, and Harry's efforts to end the stigma around mental health really buoyed me up and helped me feel a little more normal. So I thank them for the small bit they did for me, just doing what they do, and am so thrilled for the work they are doing for so many other people.

Also, Kate's dress is beautiful! I love it!

  40. I love this dress. It is stunning and interesting and unexpected. That said, I did feel that it was not a day dress. As a professional woman, I would never wear this dress to a business meeting or presentation. Cocktail party, evening reception etc. absolutely! I love it! And it looks wonderful on her.

Also, I would like to see Kate join a Toast Masters club or something to improve her public speaking. It's a real weakness in her public role and something that absolutely can be developed. It does not seem to me that she has come very far in the last 5 years in her public speaking skills.

Six years in, she needs to be prepared enough to read more than two or three words at a time before looking down, especially since she is repeating the major themes of the campaign for the third or fourth time. I also question the wisdom of a brand new expensive outfit and a whole lot more hair added ahead of this engagement. If Kate had repeated an outfit, the attention would have been on the cause instead of on her fashion.

I see your point, but the queen has been doing this waaaaaaaaaaaay longer than any of them and she still reads from the note all the time. In general, the british royals are not very accomplished speakers (with exceptions ofc, like Sophie). They have not gotten the roles on merit. I see growth and improvement in Kate's speeches and that is all we can ask for, I think.

  44. I work in health and deal with people with mental health problems every day. I am appalled at some of the dismissive coments I have read. A major problem in treating mental problems is that many of us do not talk about mental health, do not regard it on the same footing as diabetes etc, and secretly or openly regard it as a personal failing or weakness. The leper disease of our time. HIV Aids was a leper disease of the eighties and nineties. Diana addressed that by taking of her virgin white gloves and touching the afflicted. That small action was such a powerful symbol and changed attitudes. The Heads Together is in a similar vein. Please stop carping and give as much support as possible to helping change attitude to mental health.

I am not dismissing their work at all! It is very important work! And a great steppingstone for building a foundation of understanding in future generations. It is slow work, and it is important work. Not fully agreeing or understanding what exactly Heads together is doing (other than putting mental health on the map, which is extremely important) does not equal not valuing the work they are doing. It's great that they get people to open up. But what will you do when someone opens up to you, where do people turn? All these things would be good for them to bring up. Ofc talking with your close ones is a big step in good mental health. But talking to a friend isn't always enough, for example.

      Delete
    3. I don't think anyone is dismissing the cause! I'm sure they're a great organization doing wonderful work. And I'm glad they're at least bringing some top level of attention to the cause.

It's interesting you mention Diana and her physical involvement with AIDS patients. I think that's what many of us are mentioning here that's just not happening with this trio. It's all very hands off. Not to interfere with the heavy duty of raising children and being the future king.

It's very distant and doesn't make them likable, beyond the wardrobe. Which begins to feel obnoxious when you compare to the cost to the amount of work done.

      Delete
    4. LAKate: So Kate hugging that woman at last week's engagement wasn't hands on? The stigma of HIV Aids and the stigma of mental health issues are entirely different. The stigma with Aids was that touching someone with Aids would give you Aids. With mental health, one can't reach into the person's head to show you care - but giving a hug definitely would help. As would listening. I don't agree that Kate and William are distant and certainly Harry isn't. As for being likable, everyone that meets them (even those who met them today) say how likable they are, how warm, and interested, and knowledgeable.

      Delete
    5. "Putting mental health on the map" is A BIG DEAL. RE moving stigma and encouraging to seek help- also BIG DEALS. Nothing can happen until these very basic steps take place. It is the battle plan for any cause. Getting the subject out into the open and talked about is always the first step. Alcoholism, child abuse, women's rights. From Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Bill W. to Gloria Steinham, the way is the same. IF this trio and their many helpers accomplish nothing but awareness and decreased stigma they have done more for their neighbors than many of their critics.

  46. I absolutely loved the entire look today. So young and fresh. Kate was just stunning.
They are shining a much needed light on mental health issues. Baby steps, perhaps, but William did open up last week about his own problems after Diana's death. I am taking a wait and see attitude on how this develops. While it's true that one doesn't necessarily walk around with a mental health pamphlet, if you are just there for a friend to open up to, that can make a world of difference. Then perhaps helping them figure out the best road to take in getting professional help and/or guidance.
I hope we will see them developing ideas, and having conversations about how to go forward. For now though, they have opened the communication on mental health, and I say well done.

  48. Wow. This is not the first time I have read about TRH not acknowledging reporters, but it continues to amaze me that they won't even say hello to people they see on a weekly basis. The very fact that a blog that is read mostly by royal fans like myself can generate so many negative comments simply highlights the growing necessity for the palace to address this serious issue. TRHs behaviour is being perceived as childish and unacceptable by an increasing number of people.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Kim, the one point about the "non-greeting" that jumped out to me, how close they all were. Richard Palmer said himself what made it so odd was if they were any closer they would have been elbowing each other.

So this was a situation (it would seem) where they had to go out of their way to ignore the press, it actually would have been easier to give a simple "Good morning". Emily Andrews says she greeted William and he ignored her. Noise would not have been a factor with that proximity.

And to clarify, while Charles et al may not always *look* and greet, they do interact with the press while on an engagement and usually remember they are other human beings in the room who are simply doing a job. William and Kate in particular seem to have built an invisible wall and act as if they are not even there, look right past them. And these are people who can help promote your work! Daft.

Greetings are not always possible, and they don't have to fall over themselves to say hello, but a little goes a long way. Just look at the reinvention of Camilla if you have doubts.

Say hello when possible, look in their direction when possible, (that also helps with photos!) interact with them in a room if possible. Not to mention, what gets me the most, is the majority of the public "know" the royals through the press. When you ignore them it can start to feel as if you're ignoring the audience. So many of these stories lack the little tidbits and interactions that can really round out their public personas.

Now if you'll allow me a completely different topic, any computer savvy people here tell me why, when I reply to a comment, it doesn't appear in the right place! And it is one of those times when she obviously knows she, and they, look splendid. She always shines in the company of the brothers.

I hope Kate's speech was more understandable in the room than on the video. It sounded as though there was an echo. All three speeches were very nice, and I would think this issue is well raised since current conditions are conducive to strain and stress.

  51. I agree with comments about the treatment of the press today. It is just churlish and rude of William in particular. Manners maketh the man. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain and needs the press on his side. I think whoever is "advising" the trio is giving very bad advice and should be sacked. I now feel very disappointed in the Cambridges - they were on such a high after the wedding but now it has gone down hill and I fear they are losing favour.
Kate looked nice today but I wish she would take 6 inches off the hair, it is too dominant. I agree a repeat was more the order of the day today than a further new item of clothing, so as not to distract from the important message.

  53. I agree with many comments here that have already talked about wanting to know more concrete information about Heads Together and the direction the campaign is going. I find it a little confusing and hazy, still, as to WHAT, exactly, is going to happen moving forward. What specific steps will be taken to further the cause? I love that the royal trio have taken on such a worthy cause, but I don't want to be hearing speeches that say the same thing as one year ago. The vagueness is frustrating.

As for the press, I do think that was a missed opportunity. I know the royals have had run-ins with them, but the press is part of their lives, especially their work, so why not embrace them to further the cause of that work? Giving cold shoulders will not help the royals' image and it will make their honest efforts seem fake if they snub the very people who could help spread the word.

I LOVE Kate's look today. It so hearkens back to her newlywed years--especially the hair! The dress is chic and different from the usual coatdress ensemble. I'm glad to see a fun print that doesn't overwhelm and to see Kate pair that print with fabulous curls (sans clips) and accent shoes. The look is a major win for me today!

A quickly written suggested speech - in two parts - hopefully somewhere close together.
    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am here today shaking in my shoes for there is nothing I dread worse than public speaking. When William and I married, I thought it would be a doodle, the easiest thing in the world since I had done acting in school but I soon found out my mistake. I’m sure our fine ladies and gentlemen of the press will be glad to have their headlines for tomorrow (spoken with humour) but only by speaking openly of our own issues, be they great or small, can we ask openness of others.
That is why we are here today – to invite dialogue, to invite openness and most important of all to invite understanding and acceptance because without the latter, the former cannot exist. It our goal to remove the stigma from issues of mental health, whether these be huge matters or tiny ones. We all fear being judged, by our employers, our teachers, our friends and classmates, our family, the public at large. All too often those we would confide in don’t know how to help or, in the case of parents, may be in denial or afraid that blame will fall on them. Obtaining help is no easy thing, it takes effort, often when thoughts have turned black and even day to day activities take too much effort. It means confronting fears instead of avoiding them and, hardest of all, admitting perfection doesn’t exist.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Julia from Leominster17 January 2017 at 20:25

Continued from wherever the top part is - this is far from perfect but I believe it would be a start for Kate.
It takes finding the right help, someone who speaks directly to you, and this may not happen immediately. Often the first, counselor may not be the right one. It takes patience and perseverance often when these are least at hand. It takes admitting overcoming grief may be more difficult than we ever imagined, that we are trying to be a rock for others, when we ourselves need someone to lean on, that even joy in a newborn may be denied if a mother is suffering from post-partum depression, as my late mother-in-law did and spoke honestly about in the hopes that others might be helped. We are here to carry on that openness and make mental wellness as open and important as physical wellness.

All we can do is start small. Reach out if you feel someone is in need. Find someone you feel you can confide in if you need help. We aim to bring as much attention as possible to organisations eager to provide assistance, to encourage these organisations to work together so people can be referred to those who can help them the most and don’t fall through cracks. But most of all Talk. As I have been determined to stand here today, make the effort to speak out, whether to help or to be helped, for if you accept the former, you will be to give back. Help us shine light on the darkness and speak out!

  56. Julia from Leominster17 January 2017 at 20:53

Part three - the hardest for me since I'm really not sure how William, Kate and Harry mean Heads Together to work but this is my best idea - others suggestions eagerly welcomed.

It is our goal this year to go about the country – listening – not just to our eight charities under the umbrella of Heads Together – but to any others who have programmes or ideas that deserve attention. We will be highlighting stories of those who have found comfort through conversation but we realise people may think that would never work for them. We want to change that perception – we want to urge, employers, schools, hospitals to treat mental health as a natural part of human existence, not something to judge, scorn or ignore but to listen and have awareness as to how to help. We hope this will reach both young and old, and are particularly hopeful of working with the young, where often a lack of understanding leads to teasing and even bullying and abuse. We will be seeking and bringing attention to creative solutions to be shared with organisations, charities and individuals. After years in darkness, the light can be blinding but the eyes adjust and we hope before this year ends to see a new openness that will start to banish the stigma attached to mental illness once and for all.

    1. Julia, they should hire you on the spot. What a personal, heartfelt, powerful speech! I think it would have made every front page and the top of the news hour had Kate delivered it, bringing worldwide attention to Heads Together.

  57. I have always imagined, rightly or wrongly, that the royals have been instructed by the Queen not to engage with the press in any way. She doesn't and I wonder if she thinks that once you start engaging with the press it's a slippery slope to the Kardashian kind of fame. A nod hello would not go amiss, but if the royal protocol is to stay silent/blank, then I cannot begrudge WIlliam, Harry, or Kate for following it.

I don't know that I agree with that - yes, that is true for the queen and she has managed a mystique no royal today can, but I've seen Philip engage the press with an earthiness and Anne give interviews. I think a little light humour never goes wrong in making a speech and this is a chance to acknowledge the press, get them on your side and move on.

The risk of Kardashian fame comes from not having a purpose other than being out there or becoming to linked with other celebrities too much. I don't think most traditional courtiers are going to want the mental health issue embraced at all - they are the ones who rubbished Diana for speaking out - but if William, Harry and Kate are going to be successful modern royals and take on this cause, they need a working relationship with the press, maybe not a close one, but one that acknowledges their role in bringing attention to their causes.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you, Julia, that they need a working relationship with the press. I'm not sure any public figure can go without some interaction with the media these days! As others have said I imagine William still dislikes the press from its involvement in his mother's death. I suspect it is quite a complicated issue for him and Harry.

  58. I previously commented (end of last year) that I was beginning to feel as though Kate's clothing choices were becoming quite...dowdy...with the seemingly endless matchy coat dresses and heels. However, I was blown away by today's look. So gorgeous! As a young professional woman near Kate's age, I would wear this dress in a heart beat and for so many different occasions. Truly beautiful and stylish, and I think appropriate for their engagement today. While some people feel they did not see the purpose of today's briefing, I think it is amazing what small reminders like this can do for people. Any chance they get to promote this cause, which I feel is very worthy, I am all for. As always, well done Charlotte for your excellent coverage. Thank you!

  59. We were chatting about the possibility of royal tours for 2017 (and we do love a royal tour here on DKB). Several correctly noted, there hasn't been any news in terms of speculation. I asked around and apparently it's expected William and Kate will undertake a tour in late Spring. Obviously nothing is announced and KP are eager to keep things under wraps until details are officially announced. We should hear more if it goes ahead over the next month or so.

It certainly looks like there's a strong possibility :)

  60. Sorry your friends, Richard and Emily, felt slighted this morning Charlotte.

The good news is that through the new and improved environment of the comments section, and perhaps even as an extension of the effect of Heads Together conversations, you are sharing more of your feelings with us and that is so neat. :) Thank you.

Do you think that Richard and Emily can talk to W/K/H about feeling slighted this morning? I think they should. And what better time what with the encouragement to talk to one another in the campaign for mental/emotional health. That might be a breakthrough thing for them to do. My guess is that if W/K/H knew that Richard and Emily were feeling that way they would be so glad to know about it as I really don't believe that they want to hurt anyone in anyway.

    1. I don't know Richard or Emily particularly well; whoever had been standing there today I would still have thought it was poor form. It's difficult to convey how close they were. I believe there were about ten reporters who have all been supportive of Heads Together. That is merely my opinion, I'm not saying it's right or wrong but I do firmly believe we should all be able to express our views without them being devalued to suit particular agendas. One thing I will say - it takes a certain degree of courage to go against the grain in this comments section and in that area there is still much to do.

In no way does it take from the success of the day. The briefing created a lovely buzz with everyone from Professor Green to Rio Ferdinand sharing their experiences and pushed the conversation further, which is the aim. I added a video to the post with a great wrap up of the speeches and the event.

    2. Emily paid Kate a huge compliment on her twitter feed and noted that she spoke really well and passionately today as well as knocking it sartorially out of the park. I think she is also at the Endeavour Fund event tonight.

    3. That's basic adult maturity I think JN, and maybe a good example? Emily's a good egg, just because she has differences with them, doesn't mean she won't acknowledge when they're doing something good as well.

Likewise, William may have his complaints about paps and anger issues with *some* of the press, but that doesn't mean he has to lump them all together, and doesn't mean he can't work with them. It's such a simple formula "you scratch mine, I'll scratch yours" is all it boils down to. And treating them with basic decency is also a good start.

Being a member of a dedicated press corps is hard work, and can be a thankless job. And William and Kate should take a moment to ask, what if we showed up to promote a cause, and no one was there to report it?

    4. I agree, Claudia. It's unfortunate that everyone apparently is tarred with the same brush.

    5. Charlotte, sorry. didn't mean to presume.

I hope I didn't offend you. I think that however many reporters were there, my yearning would be for them to reach out and let the trio know how they feel. That's what my impetus is/was.

Yes, we have a ways to go here, and it does take courage, but thankfully we are getting there in a kinder, more unilaterally respectful way. Hugs are flying left and right, empathy is pouring out and feelings are being discussed and welcomed. It ain't perfect yet. But it's getting there. Thank you Charlotte. :)

    7. I left a reply to Surfer Girl's comment but it seems blogger has eaten it.

You didn't offend me, not at all. There's a very open and interesting conversation going on and that's wonderful to see :)

The royals and the press have a delicate and fractious relationship. Understandably too, the media treated Diana dreadfully and many other members of the Royal family over the years. It's a tough one without a doubt. I just hope they can find common ground and mend it moving forward as they need each other. Media relations between KP and the media have always been difficult, but hopefully things will improve.

Sorry, I know this is totally off-topic, but: What a SAD, SAD, day!! Mrs May´s speech today left me heart-broken.
Nearly 30 years ago, deciding to go to Britain and spend my work-practice term during my studies for a degree in international business studies there, literally saved my life.
You have read a little bit about my story in recent posts. Back then, going as far as possible away from my family had been my last straw. The British people, during the year I had the honour and pleasure of staying there, showed they were more "parents" to me than my real parents will ever be.
It was my secret dream to one day be able to go back and spend my "old days" there... Now that´s gone right out of the window... Where I once was "the lovely young lady from good old Germany" (oh yes, the British men did their VERY best to convince me that I was FAR from "ugly", believe me!!), I will now be, according to the thinking of Mrs May et al, one of those "horrible foreigners" whose immigration must be prevented at all cost - although I very much intended to spend my hard-earned pension in Britain rather than in my native Germany!

Having earned my degree back in the eighties in international business, I can assure Mrs May et al, if the British industry had the means to "go global", it would have done so LONG time ago, since conquering global markets is really not news anymore(and hasn´t been for a while). The EU has done a lot of stupid things, but it CERTAINLY hasn´t prevented the British industry from concentrating on global markets! (Besides, there are many British companies doing well on European and other internationals markets, thank you very much!!)
Reading that our dear Charlotte had to take up the subject of "freezing out the media" in her post, didn´t really change my mood, either. Seems that "splendid isolation" is coming back in full force... on so many levels.....
Quite honestly, I am 50 years old, and I STILL vividly remember the horrible feeling of crossing a border, being eyed by customs officers as if you were a potential smuggler or worse. I grew up near the Swiss and French border, we had many relatives and friends in Switzerland. We spent most of our holidays there, so crossing the border was a rather frequent thing. When I returned from Britain back in the eighties, there were no border controls between Germany and France anymore. I drove on the motorway, passing by the border control houses - and there was no-one in there. It was absolutely surreal. But in SUCH a good way! Do we REALLY want to go back to the "old times"? TODAY, in the day and age of the internet? My daughter is sitting in her room right now, chatting with people from the US, Canada, Sweden, and even Russia. And Britain wants to go back to the last century? And nationalists all over the world are having a field day? Are you kidding me? Can we all just PLEASE wake up and learn from the past? Do we need to remind people that both the first AND the second World War were caused by nationalists and nationalism in the first place?
Sorry for my totally off-topic ranting, but my heart is BLEEDING right now, honestly!! I want "my" Britain back, open-minded, friendly, joking about our differences and quirks, but welcoming with open arms anyone who loves a good sense of humour and a night-out in the pub!
"Ousting" has never solved ANY problem - I fear, both William and Britain will have to learn that the hard way....

    1. My words will sound so empty given how heartfelt your post was, but I hope you'll feel better Eve, and I appreciate you sharing your point of view.

I know a lot of people were gripped by May's speech this morning, and it is dominating the front pages that I've seen from Neil Henderson. I have to say, it sounds trivial, but I wondered this morning if the Heads Together event could have been rescheduled. It's a very worthy cause but up against such enormous news I felt it would probably get drowned out... plus being rude to the reporters certainly wouldn't make any of them feel inclined to fight for coverage of your cause.

  64. I am very grateful to William, Harry, and Kate for working on the stigma surrounding mental health. As someone with lived experience (severe depression and PTSD) and as a mental health advocate, I wish I could work with them on this endeavor. It is a deeply personal passion for me. I teach Mental Health First Aid classes and one thing I always ask people to do is to put the National Suicide Hotline number in their cell phone. You never know when you might need it for yourself or for someone else (friend, family member, or stranger). In the US, that number is 1-800-273-8255. I would encourage those living in the UK to know your national suicide hotline/lifeline number too. It is a helpful resource to have. I would also encourage everyone to take a Mental Health First Aid class. It is an international curriculum. It gives you the appropriate tools and skills to help (in an initial capacity) for someone experiencing a mental health disorder or crisis. It doesn't train you to be a counselor or therapist, but it does teach you how to offer initial help and then get someone to professional resources. I enjoy teaching the class and engaging in many significant discussions about mental health.

I think sharing numbers is an excellent idea. Sarah has shared the US number, here's a list of services available in the UK:

    2. Thank you Charlotte for providing a UK link to resources.
If there is one thing I can offer to anyone struggling with a mental health disorder, it is this: please know that you are not alone. There is hope and there is recovery. I endured many years of sexual and physical abuse during childhood and adolescence. This led to my battles with PTSD and severe depression. I still struggle with them and some days I have to take things an hour at a time. I'm 35 years old and this journey with multiple mental health disorders is very hard. I have felt tremendous amounts of shame over the years. I tried to keep my feelings and despair bottled up inside. I thought it was safer to do that than to talk about it. But through therapy, trials of medication, self-help strategies like art and music therapy, I learned that hope was possible. Recovery for me has not meant a cure or the relief from symptoms. I still have flashbacks, nightmares, and some very dark days. Recovery for me has meant that I'm not alone on this journey. I have several trusted people in my life who I can confide in. On terribly hard days I go to the piano and let my fingers alleviate tough feelings. I take walks when I'm upset. But the greatest gift has been that I can reach out and help others who are struggling. Through my own experiences of trauma and mental health disorders, I have found ways to be a safe harbor for others. And I hope that everyone hears how very important William, Harry, and Kate's message was today. Talking can be the difference between life and death. I know it sounds simple, but it is very important. The most important part is being willing to listen and remind another that they are not alone in their struggles. They are loved and cared for, and that there is hope. Without my best friend doing that for me, I would not be here.

    5. Thank you Sarah for sharing your story. It is so inspiring to hear that you have found a way to use your experiences to help others. I am sorry that at times you still struggle. The most important thing about this is that you are sharing, you are helping others. You never know who maybe reading struggling with similar circumstances. You can have a true impact on someone just by being that example, being open, being ready to walk in that opportunity to provide support, a friendly smile, a active listener. Thank you for all you do. And thank you again for sharing your story.

  65. Might be a duplicate. Though Kate looked lovely today. Liked the fit and shorter length. The fabric is great, the floral looks good on her, not my personal cup of tea. Shoes and bag worked well, again looked great but I as others have said would have opted for a slightly different style of shoe at least. The earrings are the only off item, not a fan of them. Her hair looks gorgeous.

  66. I think it is a wonderful cause they are promoting. About them and the reporters i can understand it. If they would write about my mother the way they write about kate's mother i would do something other then smiling and saying hi or goodmorning to them. They could write what they want about me because i have chosen for it (my heart) when i married him (not that i think it is ok what they are doing to kate on dm for example) but her mother is a private person. I think it is very hard to face the same people who write such things and then the next day to seperate those two things, at least it would for me. And they are doing it to kate and her mother for 14 years now.

  67. I think DKB should form a delegation asap and arrange a meeting with W/K/H and their press corp to have them re-start The Heads Together campaign beginning with all Their Heads Together and talking things out with, an ample supply of hugs (and fellowship over refreshments). That's where they should re-start. That's what it is all about.

I absolutely loved Kate's look today ~ the dress, her hair and make-up...all terrific. I wasn't so sure that I understood the shoe and bag choice, but after looking at the enlarged picture of the pattern, I see she was trying to pick-up the burgundy color. I think I would have chosen black. Overall, Kate look as beautiful as ever and I always enjoy seeing the 3 of them together ~ like the 3 Musketeers :-)

  70. I think a post dedicated to a discussion of Cambridge|royal press history and press viewpoints could be both interesting and informative. Perhaps even guest posters a la Huffington Post. I realize writing a blog such as DK would be difficult or impossible without input and cooperation from the royal reporters. However, I was hesitant to express my true feelings on this issue because there are so many comments full of sympathy for the reporters, as well as some rather harsh judgements of William and Catherine.
I felt the efforts of the three today were nearly overshadowed by the complaints of the journalists. This was an ideal and appropriate opportunity to discuss personal feelings and ideas about mental health. Some of this came through, but I feel those laying their hearts on the table were perhaps not heard quite as well by some because of the distraction of the press complaints. When I compare the need of the press to be looked at to the needs expressed by those who sometimes live their lives in shadows it makes me wonder about priorities. I am not unsympathetic to the complaints the two reporters said. I don't think it was an effective means of bridging the gap. I am pretty sure my remarks will either be loudly rebutted or even ignored. Just remember- I didn't say don't present the needs of the press. I'm sure they are feeling on edge with all the changes in news gathering and publishing. I did make a reasonable suggestion I think, so maybe you will keep that in mind. .....And that I will hopefully soon be off bedrest and not have as much time to comment. :+)
