It's a Girls' Day Out for the Wimbledon Women's Final!

It was a very royal girls' day out as the Duchess of Cambridge was joined by the Duchess of Sussex and her sister Pippa Matthews for the Wimbledon women's final between Serena Williams and Simona Halep.

Kate was greeted by AELTC Chairman Philip Brook and his wife Gill.

The Brooks have been familiar faces at the tournament for years, but that is set to change soon as Mr Brook is to step down and hand over the reigns to Ian Hewitt in the coming months.

The Duchess arrived with Pippa over an hour before the match got underway to meet players, volunteers and former champions in her role as patron.

An arrival video.

It marks Kate's second visit to the tournament this year. Last week, the Duchess enjoyed a day of courtside action for the second day of the championships. During the visit, she met Andy Murray, who made a valiant return to Wimbledon to play mixed doubles with Serena Williams (I would have loved to see the dynamic duo make it to the final). Kate watched British wildcard Harriet Dart, before Angelique Kerber took on Tatjana Maria, and Roger Federer won his first-round match. Tomorrow, Kate will be joined by William to watch Federer take on Novak Djokovic in the final.

Kate, Meghan and Pippa take their seats in the Royal Box on Centre Court.

Serena Williams entered today's match knowing it could be a history-making day for her career. A win would have seen the American tennis star secure her 24th Grand Slam singles title, tying with Margaret Court, the only other player to have reached that number. Williams was also competing for her eighth Wimbledon singles title. On the other side of the court, Romanian player Simona Halep was ready to fight for her first singles title at the iconic tournament. After her French Open win in 2017, Halep has been striving for her next major victory. Ahead of the match she said: "I feel mentally strong. We will see what happens."

Ahead of the final, Halep said she would love it if patron Kate attended the final.

Last year, Kate and Meghan attended the women's final together for the first time. Kate had given birth to Louis less than three months previously, and it was just weeks after Harry and Meghan's wedding.

This year, Louis is over a year old and Meghan is mom to two-month-old Archie. It's amazing how much can change in a year.

The trio watch a tense first set.

Meghan and Pippa were photographed laughing and exchanging smiles on several occasions. Meghan attended the evening reception of Pippa's wedding when she was dating Harry, and last year Pippa and the Middleton family attended the Sussexes' Windsor wedding.

The two sisters-in-law were together earlier this week for a polo match with their children. Given their shared love of tennis, it was great to see them team up again today.

An overview of Centre Court.

From the off, Halep took command of the game and displayed incredible tennis skill. She won in straight sets - her first Wimbledon title.

More from Wimbledon:

'History wastes no time listening to those who speak of what is likely to happen. History heeds only those who make it happen – and in the women’s final at Wimbledon 2019, Simona Halep wrote her own name large. The No.7 seed, whose name appeared on no one’s list of likely winners before The Championships began, became the first Romanian ever to win a Wimbledon title.
She stunned Serena Williams, the Centre Court crowd and almost everyone on Planet Tennis to triumph 6-2, 6-2 in just 55 minutes, with a display so resourceful, so near-flawless that there could be no answer.
Two-and-a-half long years after Williams secured her 23rd Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open, this toweringly remarkable woman found she must wait still longer for the elusive 24th crown to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record.
Twelve months ago Angelique Kerber defied her here; few could envisage Halep stonewalling Williams again on the same court – yet she did. In this battle of the former world No.1s, history was written, and history was denied; and the whole was utterly thrilling.'

Applause after the match.

Kate and Meghan talking after the match ended.

Kate placed her hand on Meghan's back, I imagine commiserating with her over Serena's loss. It was a very sweet moment between the pair.

Following her win Simona Halep said: "Thank you for coming everyone from the Royal family." She added she didn't know she would be meeting Kate but added it was "amazing".

Cheers from Pippa!

An overview before Serena and Simona left the court.

It looks like all three ladies had a wonderful afternoon. They all adore tennis, and with Kate's role as patron, Meghan's friendship with Serena, and Pippa's love of the sport, it was an ace day out all round!

From the Kensington Palace Instagram account "The Duchess of Cambridge, Wimbledon Patron, and The Duchess of Sussex attended the Wimbledon 🎾 Ladies’ Singles Final today. Well done to Serena Williams and Simona Halep on a fantastic match, and congratulations Simona on your first Wimbledon title!"

In the video below shared by Gert's Royals, Kate congratulates the champion.

Kate brought back her her bottle green Dolce & Gabbana Crépe Embellished Dress. Kate first wore the piece during the 2016 Canada tour. The vivid green hue is gorgeous.

The bottle-green dress features gold-toned buttons down the front, a bow-tie collar, and a ruffled trim along the sleeve seals. The decorative pocket watch detailing is an eye-catching addition to the dress; it's crafted of sequin, crystal, and gold-beaded pocket-watch appliqué.

Kate accessorised with her $1,695 Dolce & Gabbana Pink Medium Miss Sicily Bag, described as: "Structured grained 'dauphine' calfskin top handle bag in 'rose' pink. Carry handle at top. Adjustable and detachable shoulder strap with lobster clasp fastening." She carried the piece for Wimbledon last year. It's available at Harrods.

The Duchess accessorised with her Asprey Oak Leaf earrings.

It appears Kate wore her Rupert Sanderson Malory pumps in nude.

And her Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses. They are available at Nordstrom.

Pippa was stylish in the Anna Mason London Ruflette Sleeveless Midi Dress. The liberty blue flower print dress is available for pre-order for £735.

We'll see William and Kate for the men's final tomorrow at 2 pm.

  2. Kate looks beautiful and I'm so glad to see her bring back this gorgeous dress! It's simply lovely on her. So excited for today and tomorrow's games! As a huge Nadal fan, I was sad to see him lose to Federer yesterday however I'm hopeful to see Federer lift another Wimbledon title tomorrow. Although today, I'm rooting for Halep all the way! Hope everyone enjoys the tennis this weekend :)

Also, how does one obtain a fabulous figure like Kate's... especially after 3 kids??! Asking for a friend :)

It was such a treat to see a Nadal /Federer game yesterday and I'm so glad that the fans at Wimbledon were treated to such an exciting semi-final :) I have such respect for both as sportsmen especially as they both have an immense respect for each other. Congratulations to Halep today! Well deserved! :)

  6. Great to see Kate, Meghan and Pippa together but I wish Kate would not wear D&G. They still haven’t apologized for the infamous chopsticks ad and the CEO’s instagram comments, They don’t deserve royal promotion.

    1. Yes to all of this! D&G should not be a choice for her.

      Delete
    2. Ivy Lin, if you happened to own a D&G outfit, that you had bought long before either of those events, would you put that outfit in the used clothes bin and never wear it again? How closely do you think Kate follows what is happening in the world of social media? Maybe she's not even aware of either of those events--or maybe she just thinks there are more pressing issues to be resolved in society, and it would be a shame to scrap a perfectly good, expensive dress.

      Delete
    3. Yes actually I would throw out all my d&g. And she should be aware ... this was a huge firestorm. If she is aware and doesnt care then quite frankly it doesn't speak well of her.

    4. Lucille in Tn.14 July 2019 at 16:28

There have been huge firestorms about skin- revealing celebrity selfies, among other
subjects. If one does not add one's two cents to that conversation in some way does it mean one is aware of but does not care about female objectification?
The whole point of monarchy combined with a governing body is to remain above the transient political currents--- and there is a political aspect to the interpretation of that D&G incident.Kate was Twitterized when she wore dark green and black instead of black to support a popular movement at the time. I am not saying that some of these storms are not promoted by worthy concerns; I do think there is almost a feeding frenzy feel about them at times. After viewing a photo currently making the rounds of a real shark feeding frenzy I am even more horrified by mass expression of ugly sides of human behavior At least the sharks were satisfying a basic need. Maybe hatefulness is a human basic need. I don't know.
I am sure Kate is aware of and cares about a great many causes; however, she must be very selective and thoughtful about her choices for public support. Everyday and sometimes , it seems, every hour there is another crises or issue to comment upon in one way or another . Catherine is a future queen and sometimes supporting favored causes has come back to bite royals. I have no doubt HM has firm Opinions. What if she had come out in support of the EU during the Brexit debate? There was great surprise when HM actively supported Charles for next Head of Commonwealth - her own son and as the next !monarch the presumed next Head. The surprise was because that sort of political statement is extremely rare for a British monarch. Anything Kate does now is potentially a topic of.discussion once she is queen.
Better to keep One's own council when Queen or future queen.

  12. Looove!! I love the 3 gals going to their seats! It's a natural.. Kate loves tennis, one of Megan's best friends is playing & Pippa loves it too... these 3 have much more in common than not!! :) Plus I Love the smile Kate is giving Megan! It's her natural smile that seems to radiate from within. I've been noticing it coming out so much more lately! There is a difference between her professional smile & her natural smile (which I associate with her younger years pre-wedding, going all the way back to her St. Andrews days). Her natural smile seems to stretch much further than her professional smile... her eyes smile & it appears that it's unguarded & comes from within! :) xx

  17. Kate’s dress coordinates with the Wimbledon badge, instead of fighting it. She had many official duties (work?) before the match so it was not a casual day for her as patron. The three women looked interesting together in that the style contrasts were extreme. However, they appeared healthy, happy and cordial at an exciting event that most of the world watches for reasons other than who is in those seats.

  18. Love seeing Kate, Pippa and Meghan. For a designer dress (on Kate) though, the quality of the sewing/dressmaking seems not what one would expect; the darts at the bust line are poorly done; they cause the fabric to not lay flat and really show. Also the sleeves don't seem to be flattering to the dress. Always good to see the ladies out and about. Thanks, Charlotte.

    1. When she wore it the first time it had none of the fit issues, not even the dart problem. Kate often amaze us with how she manage to fit into her pre-pregnancy clothes, but this is one case where it did not work. Even Kate’s pre and post pregnancy body is not 100% the same. I am pretty sure when she see the pictures tonight or tomorrow this dress will go straight to the bin/charity shop/back of her closet, or wherever Kate’s clothes goes when she retires them.

      Delete
    2. You are right. Her body isn't the same as pre-third pregnancy. Just an observation. This dress doesn't seem, therefore, to fit as it did previously. Obviously she still looks really nice.

      Delete
    3. I agree with the fit of the dress, it was so nice to see them all together to watch the game. Pippa and Catherine arrived early as Catherine is patron, I saw some pictures of Catherine and Pippa sitting in there seats talking before the game got underway, would they have been told that Meghan has arrived and gone to meet her than walk in when everyone else has taken there seats?

My loves today are (many) that Kate is the patron (perfect fit); that she is with her sister Pippa (long overdue); that the three ladies all look beautiful in their own style (Pippa's my favorite look today); that they are comfortable with each other and appear to be having a good time (good for them); that Simone Halep won the match (was rooting for the underdog here, love to see new champions emerge); that Romania has a new great national moment (yay); that Kate was very compassionate and sensitive to Meghan regarding Serena's loss (sweet); that Kate looks great yet again in a repeat (smart and her hair en pointe); that the champion was very appreciative of the royals being in attendance; and that we get to look forward to seeing Kate and William tomorrow (another great day of tennis and royal watching)!! As a Federer fan, I am rooting for him to win tomorrow! cc

  28. I think that Kate overall looks lovely but I feel that despite her slim figure, which showcases most styles beautifully, some things just don’t suit her. This dress makes her look too lean, great colour though.
Your comments are lovely and your positivity is refreshing, so much is made of any opportunity to see difficulties between Meghan and Kate, the reality is that they are probably like the rest of us, making efforts to get along well with in-laws we will become very fond of in the end!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Quite honestly, whilst I so very happy that Kate is finally, after all these years, rewearing this tour dress, Pippa outstrips her in the summery style stakes. Still, I am always pleased to see a repeat, even if it's not the best for the occasion. I sort of feel Kate has some gorgeous dress in white she only wore once a few summer's ago. That would have been better.

Another "wish I could lip read!" moment at the beginning of the video when Gill Brook says something and Kate pats her dress as if to say "Oh, this! I wasn't quite sure what to wear this morning." Am sure that's not what she said but, as I said, wish I could lip read. Am definitely going to try to watch a replay of today's match, sounds like it was terrific. I do like Pippa's dress the best, love that print. It was interesting the way Pippa melted away after they got out of the car and Kate did her "official" duties. Do you think, Charlotte, that Pippa was acting as a kind of lady-in-waiting to Kate today?

    1. I agree Valerie, I think she was saying something about how she just thought she'd go with this... :) I thought it a great choice with the green grass courts! :)

    3. There's an article about Carole and Mike Middleton taking George and Charlotte to some festival or fair thing near their home during this game so I wonder if everyone is visiting them right now and maybe kate and pippa came in from bucklebury together?

      Delete
    4. Kate still had her assistant with her as well, so I think Kate invited Pippa since Meghan was only there for Serena’s game, while Kate and Pippa stayed longer. Can you imagine the headlines if Meghan left after Serena’s game and Kate was left sitting by herself?

      Delete
    5. RachelZA I had the same thoughts. As great as it was to have the three together, Pippa could meet up with Meghan while Kate worked, and she could be there just in case Meghan had to stay home with an Archie "problem.' Actually, very thoughtful.

I think it would have looked better if it had been cut a little looser. Also, what's up with the darts at the chest? Meghan's white blouse looked awkward with her skirt. Pippa wins the day!

    1. There is an odd puckering around the darts..also this dress was first worn before her third pregnancy, therefore it fits differently around the mid-section. This shows in some of the photos. Otherwise, this shade of green is beautiful on Catherine and the style suits her figure.

    2. My same thoughts, Kate wearing the green dress as a nod to green grass court of Wimbledon, but when I got a look at a close-up of the darts of chest area is just awful, I would get it fixed. Charlotte, I noticed in the video that some people curtsy when they meet Kate and some don’t. Are the non-curtsy people breaking protocol, or is that a tradition that’s just disappearing?
    Thanks!

    1. It is really only the Queen that is consistently curtsied.
As for the rest, foreigners are never expected to curtsy and for British citizens it is a personal decision. I always get the idea that the younger royals are uncomfortable when people curtesy to them.
I can understand why people have object to curtesy, but I find it a lovely gesture and would be sorry to see it die out.

It was sweet that Kate arrived with her sister and yes, Pippa was great at fading back as Kate had work to do.

I was rooting for Serena - just want her to get that number 24! It was sweet however how Simona thanked the Royal Family and was excited about meeting Kate. I wonder if Meghan hung around to Serena later (or if Serena is all "work mode" as well at a grand slam event like this).

  43. At this point I'd like to add a note to younger readers. Please be aware that the post partum body shapes of Kate and Pippa are not simply achieved by sheer willpower. Even if you intend to get your pre pregnancy body back, there are a lot of impacts that can spoil your plan. Work, time, financial opportunities, nutritional requirements, your physical and mental health and that of the baby, and last but not least genetic disposition play a big role. And then it is still a question of taste. Not everybody admires model bodies, and it is much more important to be healthy and full of strength, energy and stamina.

Nora, I agree. that's why when folks say, oh I was a mess and I didn't leave the house I feel its unrealistic to compare themselves with meghan, pippa or kate. they have money and support and nannys etc. etc. normal people do not. also part of their "job" is in how they look.

  44. Is that Martina Navratilova sitting behind Meghan and Pippa?

hmmm. there is something about this dress. if it was shorter id like it more, think it would have been more balanced? it just seems disproportionate somehow, cant put my finger on it. would have looked great with a pony tail but then maybe that would have made it too casual? I am not a fan of pippas dress, flouncy is not good on a grown woman. meghans blouse and skirt do not seem to go together. get that they are enjoying each others company.

  46. They all three look wonderful. I feel quite strongly about this dress not being as flattering as it should be on Kate. It seems a bit tight and the lines in it are awkward. That being said perhaps it was just photographed that way? Either way she looks beautiful and professional. And I'm happy to see her and Pippa and Meghan having a great time!
