The Duchess of Cambridge Visits Angela Marmont Biodiversity Centre

The Duchess of Cambridge made an embargoed visit to her patronage, the Natural History Museum, this morning to view the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity and hear how it is championing and helping to protect UK wildlife.

Kensington Palace said: "The Duchess is a strong advocate for the positive impact that nature and the outdoors can have on our physical and mental wellbeing, and in particular for childhood development. Alongside its national programme of activity, the Natural History Museum aims to inspire its millions of visitors to act for nature. The museum is forging partnerships across the UK to empower school children, families and local communities to help protect the wildlife in urban areas."

The Palace added: "The Angela Marmont Centre (AMC) is a unique scientific hub located in the Natural History Museum that is dedicated to the study of the UK’s natural world. It helps public visitors identify their finds, provides vital training in wildlife identification, and leads research and citizen science projects that are helping to transform our understanding of over 80,000 species of wildlife known to exist in the UK today. With populations of many UK species declining, and a significant proportion threatened with local extinction, the AMC brings together a host of individuals and organisations all dedicated to building understanding of the UK’s wildlife, so that it can be better protected for future generations."

The centre operates a drop in centre where you can get assistance identifying specimens.

Access to the UK biodiversity reference collections of specimens and the London Natural History Society's library is also available.

Keen naturalists are encouraged to make use of the visitor space which includes microscopes and photo-stacking equipment.

Kate spent time with Museum Director Sir Michael Dixon as well as Head of the Angela Marmont Centre Dr John Tweddle and Head of Learning and Audiences Beth Stone who are jointly leading the charge to revolutionise the study of wildlife.

The Duchess saw DNA sequencing in action and a selection of plant and insect specimens from the collection.

A closer look at the butterflies Kate saw.

A representative from the Natural History Museum revealed attracting young people is top of the agenda. "HRH heard how the Museum is aiming to inspire the more than five million visitors it welcomes each year alongside its national programme of activity to empower people to act for nature. With the likelihood of a child visiting green spaces having halved in a generation, it has never been more important to excite young people about wildlife. The Museum is responding to this challenge by forging partnerships across the UK to empower school children, families and local communities to help protect the wildlife in urban areas."

A video from the engagement.

The Duchess showcased autumnal style in a berry and khaki look featuring a mix of high street pieces and repeats from her closet. I love burgundy, berry and warm red tones at this time of year. Kate's wardrobe has officially shifted gear for the season. The bag, shoes and jumper are a great combination.

Kate wore the £39 Warehouse Pointelle High Neck Jumper (with many thanks to HeavenQRF). The long sleeve sweater features a scalloped high neck and cuffs and a pointelle texture at the yoke. It's available in very limited sizing at John Lewis and Warehouse.

The Duchess teamed the jumper with a pair of £89 Jigsaw Culottes. Described as: "Cut from a lightweight fabric that forms a relaxed wide-leg, details include an elasticated waist, front slant pockets and rushing from the waistband to the hem." They are available at John Lewis and Jigsaw.

The Duchess wore her Tod's burgundy fringed pumps.

Kate carried her Chanel bag with enamel handle.

And her Asprey Oak Leaf earrings.

In other news, the Court Circular records William and Kate met with Bill Gates yesterday. ITV News reports: "Mr Gates was there in his capacity as co-chairman and trustee of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The private behind-the-scenes meeting was not announced beforehand, but was recorded in the Court Circular – the daily record of royal engagements. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private foundation in the world. Mr Gates is estimated to have given away 35.8 billion dollars (£29.3 billion) to charity."

A reminder William and Kate's Pakistan tour kicks off on Monday. Just a few days to go...

What a perfect look! Practical, elegant, and lovely autumnal colours.

my first reaction too! and these are worse than the last, I mean really, elastic backing?? these are a big no.

    4. I agree with Anonymous 14:31 and Caroline--the legs are just too wide, and the length is so odd. I was around the last time culottes were popular, and they were shorter and had narrower legs. They still weren't the most flattering things, but they were better than this go-round.

    5. I actually think she pulls off the outfit well. She is very thin and this makes her look healthy and fit. Love the colour combo too.

  3. She really loves this style pant. Not my favorite on her, well, on anyone really, I think they are so unflattering.
I adore everything about the sweater and the color combo. Very out of the box combo for her and quite autumnal.

    2. I agree Abbey. I don’t like the culottes per se, but she does seem to pull them off. At least better than most people would.

    3. I think they are flattering! She's one of the few who can pull it off due to her height and frame. Love the colors and SO GLAD to see those shoes again.

    4. I don't think they are generally flattering, I don't usually like them but Kate looks fantastic. Paradox!

  6. Ooh I like the sweater and the shoes. Burgundy is my color. The pants don't really work for me. Too high waisted and baggy. I think cigarette style pants would work best on Kate. But I love that she's attending a natural history museum. They are really great resources for everyone that aren't always used. Also good to see her out and about even before the big Pakistani tour.

Kate looks fabulous as usual. XOXOXOXO

  9. The sweater and color combo are just beautiful. The style of the culottes seem to be a new go-to for Kate. It is not exactly what I would choose, but it seems practical and appropriate.

  13. The official twitter account of the British High Comission in Pakistan has been tweeting about the next week visit testing what their followers know about W&K and also asking for recommendations for food, etc. It’s fantastic to read how happy people replying to those tweets are for the upcoming visit! I hope security does not mean no walkabouts because it seems people are expecting to meet them!

Thank you Rachel!! I was good not really liking them with just a sigh and then scrolled down to the final back view, a big HN on the elastic waisted pants, just no. for one thing she is so slim she does not need elastic! they look cheap and not flattering at all on her backside. and the ribbing down the front is also not a good look, these look more like the dreaded sweat pants. really wish she could borrow some of Letizia's pants!!!

      Delete
    2. I am too Rachel, I was so on board with the entire outfit, loving the rich color palette, the beautiful burgundy sweater, the repeat of the bag and the shoes (Love both), her beautiful hair, then I came to the picture from behind. The elastic back was a little of a buzz kill for me and took away from the sleekness of the look. But not enough for me to hate it, just enough to wonder why? Kate still looks fabulous and really pleased to see her at the Museum of Natural History. Love the initiative of the museum to involve more youth to learn and study wildlife and Kate's support of the same. cc

    3. I actually don't mind the elastic. I think it gives the outfit a casual vibe which I think Kate was trying to go for. She's just visiting a museum. No need to bring out the really fancy clothes. I'm surprised at the price of the culottes though. Any high street brand has them all over stores and for way less than what Kate paid for. I'm more bothered by the rather cheap-looking polyester. I feel like culottes work better when they're cotton.

      Delete
    4. I'm with you Rachel. These pants are a head scratcher. If you watch the video you can see the crotch is about 2 inches too long. The elastic waist. The length. Too casual.

On the positives she looks radiant and this deep burgundy is terrific on her! I don't even mind the color combo. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either.

She took a risk. I'm just not sure it worked out.

    1. There were people visiting the museum so I guess they did not announce this in advance so that they did not have to close it or certain areas while she was there.

    2. Most of Kate’s (I don’t know about other royals) visits to museums are embargoed unless she is attending a function or opening something.
Since the museum was open today I assume they did not want the whole world and their friend decide to visit the museum today.

  17. Haven't seen her make a mistake this bad in a while. Those pants are too big and doesn't flatter her small and hipless frame.

  18. Excellent cause, we really all ought to care more about the wild life. It’s amazing to wake up in the morning and hear birds singing outside my window!

Now to the sartorial side of the visit. Overall I am very happy to see her change things around. Unusual outfit - and that is the kind of change I was hoping for! I also don’t favour culottes, but she has the body type that can make it work. The colours are so nice and autumnal, and the combination is just lovely. The shoes are my favourites of her entire (and rather large:)..) collection. Also glad the Chanel purse is getting another outing. The only thing I would change are replacing the culottes with a pair of well tailored wide leg pants that wouldn’t require the elastic and would fall properly to the feet (which would require a better quality fabric, obviously). Also, she did well in reusing the higher end pieces she owns - I salute that.

This seems like a fantastic museum! glad she is high lighting the cause and hopefully it will get some younger folks involved. I love everything about her look today except the pants. the shoes and bag are particular favorites of mine. I think the pants take the rest of the look down a noch, they seem more like a cheap sweat pant material and don't really go with the rest of her outfit, I was really the most turned off by the ribbing down the front before I saw the elastic waisted backing, not a good look for her. think the color combo is good and she looks great in general but just not in these pants.

    1. The elastic waist is the worst! It makes the pants look like something my grandmother would wear! Not hideous, but definitely not the cutting edge of fashion.

  20. Love that Kate is totally on trend today in both the culottes and color pallet. She is looking young and fresh resembling many on their way to the office, meetings or lunch. For the nay sayers you have not given the look a try, be a little adventurous. You may be surprised at the professional yet comfortable level of current dressing.

  21. Hmmm, I think this sweater would have looked nicer with a slim black dress pant. And these green pants would've worked better with a white shirt. All together the look is odd for me.

  23. I was a bit uncomfortable with her outfit at first, but when I saw a video, I really loved it! Not only does she look so much better than the model, but I think the pants actually give her a little extra shape around the hips. The full pant legs blew rather nicely in the breeze. I love her shoes, and the bag is gorgeous. For around $100, I thought she looked wonderful, and I continue to applaud relatively inexpensive clothes. She has so many clothes that items that I would wear hundreds of times will probably be worn maybe two to five times, thus ensuring that they always look new. Her hair looked particularly attractive today, too.

This certainly is a great center to highlight today.

  26. Love the sweater and accessories, but I just hate culottes in general. Culottes are weird on literally everyone- though she pulls them off better than I could! But still- this is a trend I wish would go away! I'm sure they are comfortable, and practical- but its just a weird cut of pant in my opinion! The color combo is interesting though, and I really like it! Different! Her hair is definitely lighter these days, right? Looks great!

    1. Yes I have the same issue with Culottes they do give the Impression of chopping off length in the legs, I think culottes look good with a low or flat heel and a longer length trouser looks better if wearing high heels. I think that's the trick to wearing culottes : )

  37. I love the sweater, pumps and bag, but like many of you am not a fan of the pants. I'm also in the minority on the color combination, as I don't think that shade of green is enough of a neutral against the berry shades in the rest of the outfit. Might have worked better if the green were darker. I also think the fabric of the pants - sort of swishy - doesn't quite work with the heaviness of the sweater, quilted bag and block heels. The same pants in a tweed or deep olive wool would have given this outfit the right vibe

Oh, her hair color looks amazing today,

  38. HEllo everyone! it's lovely to be commenting after such a long time! Love love love the wine color sweater but dislike the pants, she could've worn pencil thin pants and looked super classy with the same bag and shoes. XOXO Siddhii

  39. Yup! Just as I thought. The pants are divisive--just as divisive as the skinny jeans, it seems. Personally, I have no problem with wide-legged pants of this length on people who rock them and look great (which Catherine can do). That said, I'm never a fan of stitched front pleats. I'm also not a fan of elastic waists though I do realize that this is a current trend (depending where you are). With Catherine's figure I'd favour a paper bag style waistline to elastic; however, I'd have opted for a non-elasticized waistband and higher quality fabric in a similar cut.

To me the unusual colour combination is not disagreeable, and she's done well to balance a tighter fit in the jumper/sweater with the more relaxed trousers.

The museum looks like great fun. Condolences, Becca H. I'd be beside myself having come that close and missed.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh dear, I fear it has been a long time since I truly loved one of her outfits. My dislike of culottes is well known already. They are unflattering on almost every person and this pair is espacially bad. The elastic waist makes it even worse. The whole picture of colour combination, pants, small bag and earrings screams "woman in her late 50s embracing the grandma chic" to me. I know those small hoop earrings are back but the very yellow gold makes it look so chav.
I don't get why she ditched the skinny jeans? And if she feels jeans is not the right material for her engagements why not wear suit pants? A poster mentioned cigarette pants- something she should defenitely try in my opinion.
But I do adore those shoes. I hope we will see them more often.
On another note- I love how she carries herself at engagemants and I like her voice very much. She could work a bit on her posture though. I see this little crouch a lot with tall people. They stand in a way that makes them look smaller and is often brought over from adolesence when they feel uncofortable being taller than all their peers. But nevermind. Loved this engagements. I feel with all their focus on mental health (be it early years, suicide, addiction...) many other intersting and important causes go a bit unnoticed. I wish there would be a bit more balance in their actions even though it is nice that all young roayls show the many different angles to this topic.

  46. Love the look ... as I am a fan of purple and green anyway ... what a great on-trend work outfit for what looks to be an interesting event at the museum. I know I'm in the minority but I like the culottes and would wear them myself. I have to chuckle because for all the culottes haters who comment here (who also think Catherine dresses too staid based on past comments), the fashion magazines are praising her look for on-trend it is.

but ugg, these pants are awful. they look only ok from the front (the color combination is kind of a lot to take in. and not in a good way). and then, the elastic waist in the back! no no no. and no. it's just not a very polished look. "that looks comfortable!" shouldn't be the defining thing about an outfit when you're working.
