Kate in Massimo Dutti for University of Derby Visit

Ahead of World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10 October, the Duchess of Cambridge visited the University of Derby to discuss the effects of the pandemic on students' mental health and learn more about supports they are receiving.

Upon arrival at the University, the Duchess was greeted by several representatives including the Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Elizabeth Fothergill CBE.

Gareth Hughes, a Clinical Lead for Student Minds was delighted to host the royal visit and said: "Student mental health is a significant issue in higher education and the University of Derby is proud of its reputation as being at the forefront of supporting and improving student mental health. We have worked hard to develop our whole university approach, taking proactive steps to develop students’ ability to maintain and improve their own wellbeing and creating a learning environment that is inclusive and supportive for our students."

Hello! reports:

'The students Kate met told her about the importance of sport for their mental wellbeing, with the Duchess adding: "Particularly when it's outdoors as it hasn't got any restrictions to it."

The Duchess of Cambridge asked them: "Is it really weird not being in lectures?" One student said they were enjoying the change, but added it was "difficult not learning face-to-face". Kate told the students: "You're doing very well".

She told the students she "loved" how mental health work had been "integrated" into university life in Derby.'

The purpose of the visit was very much focused on highlighting the work of the UK's student mental health charity Student Minds. It was created with an expansive approach to issues students are facing within the university and in their own lives. Kate heard about additional supports provided via the Student Space programme which offers help through email, text, phone and webchat. The text service is delivered in partnership with the Royal Foundation's Shout initiative, a Heads Together legacy project, which was launched by the Cambridges and the Sussexes.

Resources are widely available to access anytime. Below, advice on the impact of loneliness during this difficult time.

'Be aware that loneliness can influence how we evaluate our social interactions. You may feel that you aren’t enjoying time with others. You may find yourself replaying interaction in your mind, looking for things you did or said wrong or that others did that you didn’t like.

Try to accept that these responses are an effect of how you are feeling - but don’t let them control what you do. Even if you used to enjoy time with friends more, it’s still better to have a little bit of pleasurable company than none at all. In time, you will find that your ability to enjoy social situations will increase again.

Finally, if loneliness persists and you are finding it difficult to move forward, use the support available to you. Loneliness is unpleasant but there are ways to address it and you can feel socially connected again.'

Kate met several students and heard about the transition to university life. Student Minds CEO Rosie Tressler discussed the need to continue supporting universities in the creation of whole-university approaches to mental health through the Uni Mental Health Charter.

Rosie Tressler said: "Due to the pandemic, 2020 has arguably been the most unusual and challenging start to university life that any cohort of students has had in recent times. It's therefore clear that this year students will benefit from access to additional guidance and support. This is why we created Student Space, a trusted student-focused place for students to access mental health resources, including a direct helpline, 24/7 text support and local university support information to help students easily navigate the wealth of support available to them. At Student Minds, we want to do everything we can alongside the range of services in the higher education sector and the NHS to ease the pressure and help students create memories and skills that will last a lifetime."

The Duchess discussed student mental health with Jo Jones, Assistant Registrar and Gareth Hughes, Psychotherapist Research Lead.

Kate joined a session in the mock nursing ward where nursing students and programme staff gave her an insight into the University’s peer mentoring system. The "buddy system" sees students in subsequent years extend a hand to new students. Beginning university is always a big leap and it's impossible to overstate how tumultuous this year has been. It's very encouraging to hear the proper supports are there - and being invested in at a crucial time.

The visit comes as a number of universities have confirmed Covid-19 cases, adding to the stress for students. The Telegraph reports:
'More than 50 universities in the UK have confirmed cases of coronavirus as students return to campus, with students self-isolating at Manchester Metropolitan and Glasgow University.

Nearly 500 students and staff at Sheffield University have tested positive for Covid-19 since the start of term, and more than 750 students are self-isolating at Northumbria University after testing positive.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged to get university students back to their families for Christmas despite warnings that rates of infection in young adults are climbing steeply.'

A nice video from the engagement.

Professor Kathryn Mitchell DL said:

"We are honoured to have been able to welcome Her Royal Highness to the University of Derby and extremely proud to be recognised for the work the University is doing to support student mental health, particularly during these challenging times.

Our commitment to mental health extends beyond the University and into the local community, with initiatives to improve mental health in schools and local businesses, and is something we place great importance on."

Kate chose a great look for the visit with versatile separates offering an effortlessly-stylish autumnal look. The addition of Spanish brand Massimo Dutti's pieces to her wardrobe expands the fantastic workwear options the Duchess has and can wear time and time again. Launched in 1985 as a menswear brand, the company began designing womenswear collections in 2006 with enormous success. Loved by royals from Queen Letizia to Crown Princess Mary, the appeal of timeless styles with a keen eye on tailoring is a winning combination.

Kate's coat is the Massimo Dutti Handcrafted Checked Wool Coat. The beige gingham print coat is made from wool with a lapel collar and two patch pockets.

Kate's jumper is Massimo Dutti's 100% cashmere crew neck sweater in aquamarine.

Kate accessorised with her Gold Disc Circle Earrings by Irish brand All the Falling Stars.

Both the earrings and the G, C and L necklace Kate wore were gifted to the Duchess by the owner during the couple's visit to Galway earlier this year.

And her Halcyon Days Maya bangle.

Kate wore her Gianvito Rossi Piper 85 black suede shoes.

And Kate's face mask today is the Amaia Kids reusable cotton face mask in 'Kate and Millie' print (with thanks to Kate's Royal Closet).

I will update when Kate's trousers are identified.

  1. Kate is so pretty she looks stunning in basic slacks, block heel pumps and a classic sweater. This is picky, but I do not personally care for patch pockets, and I think the coat would have been better with a different style pocket.

She has really found her areas to support with children and mental health. I like that she encourages family activities where everyone goes outside and enjoys nature.

  2. Love this look. Very “work” appropriate and flattering.

  3. A classic but modern and relaxed business style. I like the soft sweater very much. It is interesting that Kate has replaced her beloved slim fit mid rise trousers. She has changed her style and is now wearing very often high rise business style trousers which are very flattering for her.

Oh I am so sorry to those who liked it... but this is the most hideous coat I have ever seen! What in the world is going on here? With that horrible, took-it-out-of-my-grandfather's-closet coat on she looks old and frumpy. As soon as the coat is off that sweater and tailored pant combo with the lock heels is great!

    1. It’s oversized. I wish people here stopped calling Kate’s old and frumpy. You may not like her midi dresses or this oversized coat now but they’re not definitely oldfashioned. Quite the contrary.

    2. I am laughing because Kate's oversized coat is totally a fashion statement that is
very current and actually timeless. Very similar coats are currently in better shops and available now.

    3. The oversized trend has been going on for quite some time. I do like the coat but it doesn’t exactly look oversized but just a number too big. Which is not what oversized is aiming for. You still buy your size so seams sit where they should. The coat also does not go well with the rest of the outfit. In a different mix it would look much better.
Calling oversized timeless is a bit much. Silhouettes change, go out of style and come back. But very very few can actually be worn more then 50 years straight on. A black sheet dress, a white blouse, a black heel and a trench are the minority of items that made it.
As for frumpy- following trends does not equal looking fashionable, elegant or just well put together. Kate may choose trendy pieces/patterns/silhouettes but when they are not accessorised well or just plainly don’t flatter her she looks frumpy. She also has a tendency to over do certain styles which in that particular case is the outcome in the eyes of some.
What is the problem with voicing criticism about her fashion style around here nowadays? Every time people have to jump in. I don’t remember this being such a problem but for about two to three years now? I will always and forever miss her style from the beginning. It would still be completely appropriate and many of those pieces would still look very fashionable. Kate changed her work wardrobe and not everyone will like that new style.

    4. Kate used to have this collection of gorgeous, to-die-for A-line coats that went to about the knee. They looked perfect. But recently she's favored very long, blocklike, over-sized coats. I don't know why she made the switch, but once a style catches her eye she seems to go all in on that style until she finds her new fancy.

With that being said, I like this coat. The plaid pattern is cute, and it goes well with the rest of her business casual outfit. I also like the pants, block heels and sweater. The ONLY thing I'd change about this outfit is the way the pants sit on the hips. I think it's way too high-waisted and it looks weirdly bunched. I think pants that sit closer to where Kate's waist/hips actually are look better. Yes they do show her long torso but it looks like a natural waistline.

    5. Anon18:18, I quite like today’s outfit, but I agree with you that I miss her early days style. For me it was the perfect mix between professional and princess.

  6. Love how she looks. I would wear that outfit for a day out, or lunch with friends etc. It is gorgeous. I have commented before that the earrings are wonderful. A bit different but work so well with many outfits. She looks wonderful. Another great outing supporting others and bringing awareness to issues.

  7. The coat really clashes with the sweater and it is not a flattering cut for her. That said, the outfit without the coat looks very polished put-together.

    1. Interesting, I never thought of coats having to match our inner clothing. Coats are generally removed upon entry into a building unless you are a member of the RF (LOL). The particular duster coat that Kate is wearing because of the pattern is really a neutral and can easily be worn over slacks, dress, or jeans. It is extremely current.I hope we see it again.

    2. @USA Granny: sadly we will probably never see the coat again after this season. That happens to all trendy pieces Kate has fallen in love with (and bought it in several colours). She always finds back her older very classic pieces that she has repeatedly worn over the course of the years and they always looked fashionable and elegant. Her newest additions won’t stand this test if time. Maybe this cost will prove me wrong but I seriously doubt it. The suit pants have a much higher chance to accompany her in the next 5 years.

    3. USA Granny I have always argued that you get outside coats, like this one and the you get coats that are the outfit in themselves. Those coats are not meant to be taken off. And today Kate proved my point. She normally wear coatdress type coats that are not meant to be taken off (and gets lots of grieve for not taking it off) but the coat she is wearing today is not that kind of coat, hence she took it off when she was inside.

    4. @C I’m sure she will use this coat for her normal life, as we’ve seen her wearing her Barbour jackets or her beautiful blue coat on the paparazzi pictures this year, so I think this coat is going to be better paid off than any of her bespoke coat dresses even if she wears them 10 times during her lifetime as a royal.

  8. She's doing amazing work. There has been a lot of finger pointing at young people and students recently. Unfortunately the virus is still with us and spreading. The Duchess showing support for the students and their mental health is very important. I expect to see and hear a lot from the Duke and Duchess in the coming days about mental health problems, across all society. Never before was kindness and support for each other needed. Clouds pass.

  9. I love to see Kate embracing a casual yet professional look with her trousers as of late. I feel it makes her more relatable. Also, it’s a nice gesture to see he wear cute jewelry pieces given to her in Ireland as again, it makes her relatable and in my opinion, somehow feels more appropriate during Covid as it signifies family and the absence of extravagance, while so many are suffering.

  11. I love this whole look on her. Her sweater looks super soft, and I like how she paired it with the pants and belt. I love her hair, especially when it just frames her face and not behind her ears. She looks healthy and glowing.

  12. This entire ensemble is so perfect for her, a great work style. The coat is daring for the woman who wore country mouse shirtwaists all summer, but she carries it off. It’s a beautiful coat. And then the sweater, trousers and heels complete the confident professional woman. Very nice.

  13. i see that some people don't like her coat. I love it: unstructured, apparently even unlined, the complete opposite of the rather too tight or uptight coat dresses that she used to wear. It looks fresh and modern and unfussy.

    1. I agree Zora, this look is perfect for the occasion, great for a visit to a university. Very classic and effortless style, and it suits Kate very well. She is so photogenic, and she is true to herself, love how when she stands, she crosses her foot over the other; it's something I've noticed about how she stands when she's apart from people and talking with her hands!! cc

Exactly, CeCe! I do love her talking with her hands - for me it's probably the most typical "external" thing about Kate, or one of the first that I think of!😃😇 Body language is a fascinating topic!

  19. It may seem too large, but It's actually very much in style, and she looks beautiful in anything. Her hair is fabulous lately, amazingly healthy. I adore those earrings!

  20. I love this look on her. I’m especially happy to see the skinny jeans swapped out for tailored trousers. It’s a very professional modern look, and it is fantastic that she has been gravitating that way lately! I love the tucked in sweater- though maybe it’s the picture but it seems to bunch up a bit weird- a problem every one has when tucking in a sweater. I like the coat but it is a tad bit too big- though generally I do like the looser fit. Overall it is a great look for her, even with a few minor quibbles. She looks so modern and effortlessly chic. Also- great hair as always!!

  21. The Duchess looks fantastic in her hand made Irish jeweller. She was a very welcome guest in our country. Hopefully there will be many more in the coming years. She is a national treasure. What more could one ask from the future Princess of Wales. Thank you for all your hard work on the blog Charlotte.

I like the coat. at first i thought the pants were green then they showed black. the picture of her standing without the coat on, um those pants do not fit right. too big in the hip and seat on her and i wish they were longer as well. these short pants look better with less dressy shoes IMO. glad they are continuing to be out and about during these times.
