William and Kate travelled in the third royal carriage today with The Earl and Countess of Wessex.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh travelled in carriage 1 with The Duke of York and Lord Vestey.
Carriage 2 arrived with The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie while Peter and Autumn Phillips and Lord Fellowes and Lady Jane Fellowes travelled in Carriage 4. Of course Lady Jane is one of Diana's older sisters.

There was quite a funny moment when Sophie lost her balance as she stood up to exit the carriage and fell into Kate's arms. The two had a good giggle about it judging from the photo. More from The Telegraph "The Countess of Wessex was lucky she fell near a safe pair of hands at the Royal Ascot. The Royal fell into the arms of the Duchess of Cambridge, who looked shocked. However, shock soon turned into mirth as the pair were seen laughing as Prince William smiled in the background."
The Cambridges made their debut at the prestigious event last year in honour of Her Majesty's 90th birthday. Knowing how much the Queen loves Ascot, it seemed the perfect time to enjoy an afternoon at the racecourse, located just six miles from Windsor Castle. The couple's attendance today would seem to confirm suggestions it's an event we'll see on their calendar with some regularity moving forward.
A minute's silence was held before the start of racing following the recent terror attacks and Grenfell Tower fire.The racecourse says it will also make a £100,000 donation to charities helping those who have been affected. Racecourse chairman Johnny Weatherby said: "We have all been deeply saddened by recent tragic events around the country. At the beginning of this important week for racing, we wish to pay our respects to the victims and offer support to the families who have been so terribly affected."

The Duchess warmly greets Zara Tindall.
Kate and Zara share a laugh as they chat before the races commence. Mike and Zara Tindall always come across as incredibly warm and down to earth, I think William and Kate greatly enjoy their company.
In The Queen's message to racegoers she wrote "I always look forward to my time at Royal Ascot. In 1711, Queen Anne declared Ascot to be "ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch". Ever since, the finest horses have raced here and that will certainly be the case again this week".

It looks like Carole wore the same Jane Corbett hat from the royal wedding with the pacific blue Devon Sweet-Heart Neckline Dress by Goat.
Below, we see Kate and Carole with Laura Meade. Laura's husband James is one of William's closest friends and one of Princess Charlotte's godparents. It's an exciting time for the couple who will be welcoming a new arrival to the family in the coming months.

For the Royal Enclosure ladies are asked to note that formal daywear is a requirement. Dresses and skirts should be of modest length and jackets. For the first time this year, women will be able to wear jumpsuits in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot this summer following a change to the dress code. Organisers said the acceptance of the jumpsuit reflected Ascot's "awareness of seasonal trends".
Last year, Kate selected her white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress teamed with a Jane Taylor hat, Gianvito Rossi 'Praline' Pumps and the L.K. Bennett Natalie Clutch.
Kate opted for a white lace dress again this year - this time by her favourite brand Alexander McQueen. The white cotton blend and silk lace dress features delicate pleats, a high neck, three-quarter sleeves and a flared skirt.

I loved Kate's dress today; though she opted for white lace again, the structure and elements of the dress were quite different and, I felt, superior to the Dolce & Gabbana worn last year. The high neck, peplum detail and full skirt made the garment a perfect choice for Ascot. Are we seeing the beginning of a tradition of Kate wearing white to the prestigious races? As mentioned many times already, it's a shame this event, which just oozes upper-class priviledge and party atmosphere, has to come right now with all of the sadness in the UK.
But, the show must go on and, while I believe the Royals are a great asset, there is no show on earth quite like the British Royal Family.
After reading Diane's comment I will change my statement. I could never pull off that peplum detail (I called it a flared skirt) - my hips would look a mile wide but Kate has the perfect body for it. :)

ReplyDeleteTwo years ago when in England, in addition to seeing Trooping the Colour, my daughters and I took the train to Oxford where some of our co-riders were those on their way to Royal Ascot - what fun to see the men in their morning coats and the women in their wonderful hats.
I thought the same thing, Pam, that maybe she plans to wear white lace to Ascot every year. And maybe at Ascots of the future we'll see more and more ladies in lace, all trying to outdo one another a la My Fair Lady :-D

DeleteOh she looks pretty as a picture! McQueen always delivers! Even though I usually find her taste for lace a bit much, and don't love all the high neck, long sleeve pieces, this one works quite well! The lace is so fresh and flirty, the tailoring of the dress is sweet and crisp, the little peplum detail at the hips is pretty, the only thing I'd change is to make the skirt of the dress about three inches shorter. The length is slightly dowdy, and accentuates the peplum to the point of making it looks a bit wide. If the skirt were a tad shorter, it would freshen up the look and show off her beautiful legs. What a lovely Princess she is!!! xoxo

I LOVE this outfit - probably my fave Kate look of the year so far! It's youthful and flattering, unlike last years dress with the ugly ruffle and the odd cut that made her chest look like it was sagging halfway down to her waist
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm disappointed with another lace dress( and I love lace!) this is basically a very very similar outfit to last year, and similar to all her other basically the same lace dresses lol. however, I love this dress way more than last year, I like this length too, and I really like her hat(I didn't like last years at all). Bummed with the same shoes only because the shoes are always my favorite part lol. I also like her new clutch :). I usually like the countess' fun hats, but I don't like this one, this year! I do like Zara's, it's cute! I love the sea of hats!

She looks lovely but I am surprised that she picked a similar style dress. I may be in the minority but I prefer her look from last year. I also refer the Duchess in color. ( Like her Trooping the color look!) But maybe she wanted to let the Queen stand out. I think most of the royals outfits look like they would be warm on such a hit day for England.

DeleteI love this look Catherine has put together. For the second year in a row I think she's channeling Eliza Doolittle with a wicked wit. Of course it's all my wild imagination that won't quit. I enjoy watching the super rich being themselves with no apologies for anything. But it's good that they observed a moment of silence.
ReplyDeleteKate looks lovely, and I much prefer this year's white dress to last year's. That said, these photos are quite troubling in the context of so much pain and poverty so close by. Grenfell survivors are still sleeping in parks, being told they must move to Preston (200 miles away), or being forcibly moved from bed & breakfast hotels into old peoples' homes. And that's before even thinking about the housing crisis and the number of people who sleep rough in London aside from the context of Grenfell. In my opinion, no one should have two houses before everyone has one – I don't think that the £100k donated by Ascot goes nearly far enough.

DeleteThe optics are bad no doubt. Half may not care, the other half definitely do. A couple of mp's were saying they haven't put enough money into social houses in Kensington and Chelsea and I wanted to say, well there's a very big govt house that got millions in Kensington and is rarely used!

Well, Kate seems to equate Ascot with white lace. I hope it will not be a pattern for her as it will become old and predictable fast with all the years running together not being easily identifiable.
ReplyDeleteThis outfit is too twee and other century for me and I can't say I like it any better than last year's. The things I do like about it is the nipped in waist and the sheer/ opaque lace contrast on the bodice. The earrings are beautiful as is the tendril of flowers coming down from the hat into her hair. Agree with Diane that a shorter skirt would have been more modern and attractive.
The very nature of Ascot always makes me a little uneasy, but I do like that it's a tradition thing.

Beautiful! I really hated last year's dress (that prairie style is rarely flattering on anyone), but this year's is a win. The Duchess stands out in every photo. Lovely - and so nice to see her laugh with Sophie and Zara and with her hand on William's back.

ReplyDeleteI hear what you are saying, Bryony, but that doesn't take into consideration perhaps that the Royals might be doing something about those things as much as they can. Perhaps Harry is aware of the specifics that you mentioned (and thank you for sharing that information). Perhaps that is why he was more somber than we've seen him in quite some time.
ReplyDeleteAs for the two homes scenario, people have had two or more homes since time began most likely. It is a sociological verity. There will always be class stratas regardless of how mankind tries to mandate otherwise. History proves this out. Poverty and disenfranchisement are ridiculously bad, but how does anyone truly eliminate those from the face of the earth? Except for multitudes of mighty miracles, I don't know. We all do what we can is my hope. Surely the insurance companies are rushing in to help? They have the resources it seems and they are going to be among the primaries involved and held accountable. They best start making amends now and alleviate those situations you mentioned.
You are right surfer girl, sadly how do you bridge the class gap? History will show you that no matter how much you try to equal it out, it inevitably becomes unequal again. Does Britain have some sort of national emergency relief fund that could assist these poor families that have been affected? cc

ReplyDeleteI did find it interesting that William and Kate have said they are uncomfortable with this event and the class issues it displays and then came this year in the midst of a very tumultuous time. I kind of wonder if it was more of a command performance. As in, 'You are the future king, you need to do some of these events.' Or even, 'I am granny and this is my favorite event. I gave you Christmas, now you join me here.'
What is your source for such statements from the Cambridges about Ascot? Those statements would make the front pages of the papers if actually made. I don't recall any such statements. Direct quotes from the royals themselves are few and far between.

DeleteI agree. I think the papers made that up. William knows about social stratas and that not attending Ascot because of that is a mere drop in the Royal bucket. It wouldn't change anything. The nobility and aristocracy would figuratively box his ears (in fun). He also knows about social strata from the military. He observes ranks like every other soldier.
DeletePlus, with the stables the Queen has she is of course every inch a world player in the realm of thoroughbred racing. So William will inherit that perhaps one day, if Charles keeps it intact, and Ascot and other major stake races are all part of that. So Ascot it is for William, and for the long haul is my guess.

DeleteI just saw this post and I am loving Kate's look from head to toe. I expected some of the disappointment expressed over such a similar dress being worn, but I don't care. I truly love all the details that that work so well together and add up to this very feminine, vintage, and appropriate look for Ascot.
And when I scan some of the "Oh, dear" looks in the background, I like it even more! Lol. CLASS vs. a lot of legs and cleavage. :-)

On to Kate's fashion...ugh, I just can't with another lace dress, although I do prefer this one to the one she wore last year. Personally, I would have selected a simpler hat (or fascinator)and a sleeker hairdo since this dress already has a lot going on. Also I would style it with a colorful or contrasting clutch or shoes.
In the photo where Kate is presenting the King's Stand Stakes, I love the pink hat and pink dress shown on the girl behind the trophy. Very pretty. :)

DeleteI'm not sure Kate has been criticized so much for standing that way, Abagail. Plenty of women do stand like that particularly during a prayer or moment of silence. Instead the critical comments I've seen most often tend to focus on the fact she also walks with her hands clasped in front of her usually holding a clutch. I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone walk that way (except very young children who need to "go" real bad) I tried and I couldn't do it for more than a few feet. Hands clasped low in front also pull the shoulders forward into a "hunched" posture. The overall effect is to make Kate appear nervous, submissive and lacking in confidence. I'm not saying she is those things but she appears that way when walking like that. Days Kate doesn't carry a clutch she tends to do less of the hunched walking and looks more confident.

Abagail, no one here is ridiculing Kate for holding her clutch that way. On the contrary, we were the remarking that it was lucky she did have it there because we may have seen more than her legs showing through her skirt in the sun.
DeleteThere's nothing wrong with mentioning the clutch in this thread. But 99.9% of the time it's presented as proof of Kate "lacking confidence"--a claim that has been contradicted many times with photos of other public figures who do the very same thing.
DeleteI was perplexed why Kate wore last year's dress until I came to the picture from last year! Quite different in design, actually, and I like this dress better. Kate looks truly lovely. Of Eliza Doolittle's gown, I remembered the black and white, but somehow I had forgotten the lace. Is this repetition of white lace a way of saying that Kate, a former commoner at Royal Ascot, is aware of its class basis? I think Kate played Eliza when she was in school, so she is quite familiar with the Pygmalion plot.

a silly question that i'm not sure if it's been asked before (seeing i usually don't post/read the comments) is how does she avoid her heels from going into the grass? i mean really? do they use some sort of item over the heel that is clear? i was in a wedding one summer and walked in the grass down the 'isle' and my heels kept going in and out of the grass and i almost tripped! i know it's quite odd, but i'm sooo curious! lol.

DeleteThis hat is absolutely stunning. The closer you look the more detail and texture you see! A+ on the accessories this go around--I usually yawn at Kate's nude heels, but this is my favorite of her many pairs, since they're more blush. The clutch brings out the pinky-blush tones, too.

ReplyDeleteI know people often criticize her for getting many similar things but I get it. If there's a certain style or cut or fabric that suits me well, is comfortable and suitable for the occasions that I need it for, I get several of those as well ;-)
I also very much liked Carole's outfit and her dress has got such a pretty neckline! She looks much younger than her age.
The DM (which I don't like to recommend because they're so gossipy and dubious) has got some very sweet pictures of Zara with the Queen, Prince Philip and Anne respectively.

Kate, as well as the queen, and possibly Camilla, stand out as the only royals in these photos that are beautifully, impeccably dressed. As for the rest of them, They range from plain and dull, to incredibly garish, to total frumpiness. I am just dumbfounded at the choice of dresses some of these these women make.

DeleteI just don't understand why she frequently wears things like nude-colored outfits and/or pale pastels while doing events in big crowds, while standing out in situations like Trooping and Ascot when I think it's honestly much less important or necessary at all for her to stand out in comparison to others participating. I have no problem with her standing out those events by the way - while bubblegum pink at Trooping maybe was a little too bright and drew more attention than the Queen in pale colors when the Queen was the one being celebrated, I also think the Queen probably doesn't feel threatened and it's really fine. But why not try this hard when doing charity events and/or events w/ big crowds that are not the ceremonial things, in terms of standing out the way she rightfully should? Although I will say this year she seems to be spending more on even the more charity-esque events instead of repeating as much, especially even when in Britain - although she hasn't done that many engagements this yr and the small "tours" are still a big part of her numbers so it's not entirely possible to tell how much this is true.

She has been using one with up-dos for some time now. I think it's a way to feel secure that her hair won't malfunction. It's long and thick and probably heavy. Pins don't offer enough security with hair like that. The other option is to lacquer in in place with spray. Then she can't shake her hair out at home and get on with the next part of her day. It means additional time to wash the product out and dry her hair. She'd probably rather do something else like play with the kids. I think she and her hairdresser are being prudent and practical.

Agree with you Philly. It's extremely practical, looks great from any distance at all, and is noticeable only very close up, as the photographs show. And my first thought when I noticed it was along the same lines as yours: her hair is probably very heavy and at such an outside event is most easily controlled by the hairnet. I'll bet her updo at one of those fancy dinners or receptions is lacquered to helmet texture to hold it.
DeleteI don't mind the hairnet because you usually can't really see it unless it's up close and even then you kind of have to know to look for it...but it does seem to limit the updo styles that are possible for her, and sometimes lead to a bunch of updos that feel matronly to me at times and/or just repetitive.
DeleteThe constant hairnet over the past year or two would make more sense to me if she was doing engagements more regularly and would have a reason to be worried about time needed for her hair to recover from a bunch of hairspray and such.

DeleteI don't think it's fair to criticise people who often have worked extremely hard for having two homes. Many of the people affected by the fire were receiving housing and benefits - naturally, it's vital that all properties be safe and every effort should be made to get those affected housed as quickly as possible but in disasters - circumstances are not always ideal, even for those in comfortable situations and the numbers affected here are substantial.
ReplyDeleteI don't find Ascot any more elitist than polo and William isn't likely to give up polo. So glad to see the Cambridges there. The timing is of course unfortunate - June is a traditional month for lighter events = but one thing I remember about NYC when I was there soon after 9-11 is that the city plowed on - and I know a couple who was displaced them and had to move far out of the city to be housed. So I do think life needs to carry on - with due respect to those harmed.
I do love lace but somehow both this dress and the one last year seem so costume-like, almost bridal - I recall Kate at the Derby soon after her marriage and she looked so sophisticated, even with inexpensive separates. I preferred that look. I liked Carole's look very much and also Sophie's, even if she did almost take a tumble. Zara looks nice in blue.
Not keen on Beatrice, Eugenie, Camilla, or Sophie Windsor's granny gown.

A donation to the victims left homeless from the Tower fire would have been a lovely gesture instead of spending on a very close repeat dress.

ReplyDeleteKate looked wonderful.I prefer this dress on Kate over last years. It fits her beautifully and agree with others that their is a crispness to the lace that is lovely. Her whole look is great and I love seeing her in those earrings. I also agree that white may not be the best color for her she had that long cream evening gown which I thought looked wonderful with her skin tone but maybe in person the pure white looks better. Love Sophies outfit and really like the shadow she gets on her shoulders from that wonderful hat. All the men and women looked really good. It did appear that Kate and William were relaxed and enjoying the conversations with all their friends and relatives. Fun to see them interacting so much.

Such a lovely day and both seemed to be really enjoying meeting up with friends and family a lovely day out together without the kids we have not seen Kate have one for some while W of course has had a number of Polo events where he enjoys partying as well as playing Polo. Like others I love the photo of them talking and smiling at one another and Kate with her hand on W's back there are many other photos where they interact with one another lovely to see. Just as well Kate was able to steady Sophie the incident was quite amusing.
ReplyDeleteWith all the horrific incidents occurring over these last few weeks I would think both W & K must be rather concerned for the safety of their children having to bring them to live in London in September certainly not the right city to be in at the moment. With the violent reactions from many people I felt the Queen was very brave visiting so soon after the fire though I am sure there would have been plenty of security around her. I think the people of London should think of the way Manchester handled the dreadful event in their city the way they quietly supported one another was an example to everyone and follow that example not behave in such a threatening manner as they have in the last two incidents Why they have changed having handled the two Bridge incidents in a similar way to Manchester is so worrying for the many people who live in London

DeleteAlimai, I seem to remember the reference to a greater distance as being a plus! There is a branch closer, but the point was made that they specifically chose the branch further away. At first the reason alluded to was Paps etc, but now even greater reasons for Security! That's at least what I remember during the choosing process!
DeleteI remember security being a speculated guess since the school they choose have all the buildings in one place within the grounds while the closer school had buildings some streets away and such. So the school they choose would be easier to make secure.
DeleteNo matter what school would be chosen for the Cambridge children, not only would they be much safer than most children in London, but all the other children attending the same school would be very lucky in that they would also be much safer than most other children.
DeleteA longer route may allow variation, but only by so much, and really even a shorter route allows variation (could just take a much longer, roundabout way to get there), but still with the possibility of being quickly whisked in. Anyways the closer school was William and Harry's former school right? Wouldn't that mean the school both would presumably be safe for another future King and spare, and also more ready bc of experience to deal with the new security measures without hiccups?
But mostly just...I honestly don't understand why so many ppl have been saying Kate and William should be worried about their security or their kids' security now in London bc of recent events.....these recent events are the opposite of the kinds of threats royals would be threatened by! They have constant bodyguards to stand bw them and random cars on the street that may swerve onto sidewalks (not to mention they don't ever even need to walk anywhere like Kate being driven by security to go shopping just a few ft from their KP home and being allowed to park right in front of the store unlike common ppl). If they attend a concert like Ariana Grande in Manchester, the security checks would go way up - the entire venue would probably be guarded ahead of time and checked for things like bombs. These attacks threaten the general public bc they are so hard to predict and when attacks are tough to predict, the only way to protect yourself against them is while they are happening. And while most people just aren't trained to do that, royals are surrounded by guards whose only job is exactly that. Don't get me wrong, they certainly face threats, but my point is that recent events shouldn't be taken to mean anything about whether life is becoming more dangerous for royals.

ReplyDeleteEchoing the above comments- Kate looks fantastic today. I, too, prefer this white lace dress to last years. At first glance, I thought the lace looked like her black or wine Dolce Gabbana dresses. So glad it's McQueen, who really know how to tailor the garment to suit Kate's frame. The flaired peplum skirt could not be worn by a lot of us with wider hips, but Kate is so slender that it actually gives her some curves. Now if only she would wear her mother's shoes- they're to die for. Carole looks extremely pretty and the style is very youthful. Everyone looked really pretty today. Such a nice surprise to see the family together again so soon- it looks like everyone enjoys each other's company at these occasions. I love Kate's hat too. So far two home runs this week for the Duchess in the fashion department for me!!! Can't wait to see more!

ReplyDeleteI hope Royal Ascot becomes an annual event for the Cambridges if only so I can continue to appreciate the "sartorial elegance" of the event. I've always found the dress codes of the different enclosures amusing. I was surprised to learn that women were able to wear jumpsuits in the Royal Enclosure this year for the first time. It would have been nice to see one of the royal ladies rocking an elegant on-trend jumpsuit.

It was very sensitive and caring of the Queen to again remember the victims of the fire and victims of the acts of terrorism. Also, it is a very generous and kind act in that money is continuing to be raised and given to help the cause.

DeleteThis is the best lace next to her bridal lace. It looks distinct, quality, nicely spread out design and easy to see details. The length, high neck and the lining where necessary and over all proportion is simply elegant with summer lite weight look. Kate looks younger, more polished and happier than last year. W&K looking at each other seem to say, "Can we repeat out vows again. here? for better or worse, and in sickness and in health".

And these white coats are getting a bit boring. This is so much like the dress she wore to the tea party in canada! She should wear more outfits like the pink one for trooping of the colours. Grenfell Tower – that's what it's all about! The past few months have been a tremendous test to the UK – so, when I see the bright white dress, the bright white hat and the bright white smile of the duchess, I find her somewhat lacking in Fingerspitzengefühl. I agree that perhaps a more "sedate" dress along the lines of what Zara Tindall, Sophie Wessex (although both are ugly!), and even Carole Middleton, are wearing, would have been more appropriate at this time. However, I look at it another way.....Kate is the bright light in the Royal Family and isn't it her role, so to speak, to show that light as a ray of hope and a reminder that there is still far more good and wonderful people and events happening every day than bad ones - they just don't make the news , and sometimes we should be allowed to focus on the positive in the world.

DeleteThe horse that won the trophy, My Lady Aurelia, is from Stonestreet Farms in (of course) Lexington, Kentucky. The farm is a relatively new farm and in ten years has won more races and honors and made record breaking yearling sales than just about any other farm. It is quite amazing. The lady who first walked up to the award table in the video, the one with the big fabric feathers sticking up on her hat, is Barbara Jackson, owner of Stonestreet Farm and she is on just about every board concerning thoroughbred racing. Stone street Farm is quite a phenomenon is the world of thoroughbred racing. Makes for a very interesting read if you google that. I think the lady in the very pretty pink hat and dress at the trophy table is the trainer, Wesley Ward's, wife or daughter.

Kate has been bringing out the bling lately. So nice to see everybody relaxed and mingling with each other. I love the Tindalls :) I adored Carole's outfit, especially the neckline. Hope William & Kate become regulars at this event. Happy 35th Birthday to William! I just celebrated my 30th the same day as Trooping the Colour :)

"As to The Palace Born" :) She carries herself honestly as herself, yet with an ease as if She's always been in this role! :) I was also struck by how much Kate reminded me of Queen Alexandra! With the Beautiful Edwardian Styling of The Lace Dress, it's neckline & overall lines.... I found her look & demeanor to really remind me of Edward VII's Wife! I was also struck by "The Eliza Doolittle" vibe & liked the idea (sorry can't remember who mentioned it here?) that Kate might consider it a tradition to continue to wear White Dresses to Ascot Each Year? It takes one back to The Edwardian era, when White was the Summer Staple for Ladies Dresses! Ala Downton Abbey.... etc. Seeing the update about Kate going to The Victoria & Albert Museum... I've long thought that William & Kate exude memories (to me) of Victoria & Albert themselves. I think it's their Coloring, Relationship, Demeanor & William reminds me a tad of Albert in his looks & shape of his face. I have been meaning to mention that! :) Also, watching how well William & Kate interact & seem to hold the respect & kindness of their age group in Their Family..... it's Quite Easy for me to See Them as The Future Heads of The Royal Family! Love watching as William & Catherine increasingly step into their Places in History! :)

Deletebluhare maybe you'll remember this - when I first saw the photo of Kate and William together (where you can't see the length of dress) I was instantly flooded with images of Charles and Diana in costume on the Canada tour! Do you remember that? (83?) Down to the hat Kate's wearing and how she's wearing it! I wish I could put a pic in here for the younger set to see ;)

Also, I just don't understand wearing virtually identical ensembles back to back at the exact same event, and one that is admittedly a major fashion event. A bit baffling. It's like going back to Paris and arriving in that same green coat again. Or the same gown to the BAFTAs or Oscars. Oh well. I'm in the minority I know. Maybe I should just stop commenting on clothing :)
Why should white lace be restricted to one day in a person's life? She looks beautiful and that's all that matters.

DeleteNo, you should not stop commenting on the clothes. Your comment on Ascot clothing explained the occasion's significance and tradition. For people who did not grow up in the English tradition of Ascot, it gives an idea of its importance comparable in other people's tradition which have various significant and communal celebrations.
If Kate will repeat white clothing next year ( her favorite color, according to what I read way back) and in lace, then she might make it a tradition for her appearance at Ascot.

How please I am that so many royals were present yesterday at Royal Ascot especially in view of the fact that the DOE has unfortunately had to go into hospital for treatment for an infection Hopefully he won't be there long but at his age any problem will be of some concern.
ReplyDeleteI watched the opening of Parliament live this morning and thought the Queen looked weary. Prince Charles gave her a steadying hand both when ascending & descending the two or three steps to their seats and she seemed a little unsteady. I think it was as well that she did not have to robe for todays event.
Just an observation I was disappointed that the garter ceremony had to be cancelled but in view of the very hot weather it may be just as well that it was as many of the Knights are quite old and could well have struggled in their heavy garter robes.

I note from the dates of W & K's tour of Poland & Germany that they arrive back in UK the day before little Georges 4th birthday I could well imagine there will be one small boy anxiously waiting for their return no doubt grandparents will be ensuring everything is in place for his birthday party.
I look forward toe Kate's next appearance and hope things are more stable in London by then although it is being said in the press that more demonstrations are planned. Thankfully I do not live anywhere near London I feel so sorry for the police
The tour dates are very precisely planned definitely - not only do they get back the day before George's birthday, they also have it planned just right to be able to avoid missing either Wimbledon or the Spanish state visit. They seem to have somehow managed the dates to where everything has worked out just right, which is surprising given how close together these things all are.

The Queen's hat may have referred to Brexit, but of course no one knows what her opinion is. She also wore the heart shaped Cullinan diamond, and her blue suit was in a subtle paisley fabric. Maybe the Queen was also thinking about her beloved Commonwealth.

So sorry to hear that Prince Philip is in the hospital. It was sad to see the pictures of the Queen without him at the State Opening of Parliament and at the second day of Ascot, but I was happy to see other members of her family supporting her. Wishing him a speedy recovery!

The Queen has been in Lexington, Ky at least once on horse business. I thought that was cool. She has probably been there more than once given she buys horses for racing and stud. It is a very small world that of thoroughbred racing. You think that the nobility and aristocracy watch and record lineages, you should see how they keep track of that in thoroughbred racing. The Queen is an expert on thoroughbred racing and has been for many years.
I know that Kate's Trooping and Ascot dresses, especially since both bespoke, must have been planned well in advance and the Trooping outfit esp with needing to coordinate with the children would make adapting to current circumstances difficult. But there's just something.....eh...about Kate debuting two custom-made McQueen outfits within a week of each other and especially the 2nd one, given the current climate in London and all the recent tragedies. Especially this one, where paying thousands of pounds for a new outfit for an event that already is poorly-timed given the tower fire, and esp that it's thousands of pounds for an outfit that is soooo similar to what she wore last year, which just makes it seem like (given the current climate)....the wrong symbol right now bc to most people that would be such a waste. Even if this was the planned outfit, I think she maybe could have switched to repeating some other outfit (like her tour Temperley that she wore for tea right after the France paparazzi pictures got published), and then just try to quickly commission a new hat - which given her status, I think she could probably get a milliner to perhaps quickly adapt a hat they already have designed to match the dress. Or at least with this new dress, wearing one of her other many, many similar white hats would have at least been nice.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day, it definitely is a reality of life that Kate has access to a huge clothing budget, and whether or not she wears yet another bespoke high-end designer outfit for Ascot has very little to do with the financial situation of the poor fire victims, absent serious wealth redistribution which isn't realistic. So ultimately, not a huge deal. Just seems a little tone-deaf and also just feels not that great, and is easily fixable especially for something like Ascot where it's not like she's disappointing a bunch of ppl at a charity or something by repeating instead of wearing a new pretty outfit. This is a woman who wears faded, stretched out raggedy jeans and scuffed up shoes to casual engagements that I actually think matter more than Ascot bc she's interacting with the general population like those being helped by the 1851 Trust. So my point is, if she's okay looking like that for those engagements, I think a quick switch for Ascot that maybe would mean her outfit looked a little less put together than it did here should not be the end of the world and would be entirely possible.
Also would like to say quickly that my heart goes out to those affected by the London mosque attacks. I know there were not same number of casualties but it makes me a little sad that the comment section on this blog for either this post or the last one (the only 2 since/during the attack) has had very few mentions of this terrorist attack in comparison to the other recent ones.
Anyways, I'm ready to see Kate really get back to a regular engagement schedule. After almost an entire month off, aside from the surprise visit to the victims (which was important!), to have her only engagements be sailing, sitting in a carriage and standing on a balcony and standing and waving a bit, and horse races, just hasn't sat well with me. That's not to diminish the ceremonial aspects of being a royal - just given everything that's happened recently, it's stood out even more than it would otherwise for me, if that makes sense.
Well I am now firmly on the side of the Queen that the soul baring has to stop.
ReplyDeleteHarry has given a too frank (in my opinion) interview to the American Newsweek where he says "Is there any one of the royal family who wants to be king or queen? I don't think so, but we will carry out our duties at the right time." It's made some of tomorrows front pages, and in these times there's going to be one resounding response by many to that. Go ahead. We can find other things to spend the public purse on.
And, whatever their relationship to Charles, they have to be respectful. He is the Prince of Wales, the next King, and their next boss. Harry says repeatedly that he William and Kate are the ones who will move the monarchy into the 21st century. I feel like saying, hold on Harry, there's someone up before you who makes those decisions.
He also talks about being made to walk at Diana's funeral, saying no child should have been put in that situation. (I actually think if roles reversed Diana would have made same decision for boys to walk) And he goes on about the "lesser" royal engagements again.
I like Harry and he's been working hard lately, a lot of very visible and important engagements. But they all need to be reined in at this point in my opinion. This is too frank and breaks the "never complain never explain" rule. I don't think it's good at all and I think it will go over like cold potatoes.
The reactions to Prince Harry saying he thinks no one wants the top job and also criticising him being asked to walked behind his mother's coffin are interesting reading. I like his boldness.
ReplyDeleteKate needn't feel like Eliza Doolittle at Ascot for many reasons, obviously. But also because The Windsor Forest Stakes race at Ascot was re-named the Duke of Cambridge Stakes race in 2013. It is run annually every June at Ascot.

ReplyDeleteI'm getting bits and pieces about Harry's interview and am reading it with both affection and dismay.
ReplyDeleteA while back, we had a discussion of the idea of a reluctant king - many made the analogy to George VI. But each situation comes at its own time. The monarchy was something of a given then - taken as part of Britishness - even during the crisis of the abdication.
Today, people have a much stronger sense of being able to bring down institutions - as we have seen. I think Harry's interview will be a gift to republicans - a movement he may not totally appreciate. 'You and your brother don't want to be king, fine! We'll relieve you of that burden.' The dynamic of the country is shifting and we can see the influence of the young - who are the most republican - very different from the Diana days. That doesn't mean the young are right or wise - quite the opposite, to me experience of years is everything - but it is unwise to underestimate the power.
No one wants a rah-rah gung-ho king. Most serious monarchists don't want to interfere with Charles and the succession because that again runs the risk of huge problems. The age issue - that the heir is an old man with a wife who looks old beyond her years, is something that can not be helped, but should not be an excuse for wringing of hands and saying - we can't give the monarchy a younger face because Charles must come first and the others stand back. Because you can't force the young to take an interest in Charles. They don't.
But there still is some interest and momentum for William, Harry and Kate. What I would want to see is a far more active and defined role - not just saying as Harry did - monarchy is good for people but being prepared to demonstrate WHY it is good for people. An eagerness to be involved and to help is very different from an eagerness for a position. I would love to see William really come to do that - the visit to Grenfell was a baby step.
There's all this talk of modernising but never any specifics, which also seems unwise. For one thing - many older supporters do like the traditions - as always I feel, the defining word should be balance - and I am a believer in specifics - or at least a sense of a plan - we will make decisions as we go along.
I also believe there should be caution on this 'normal' bit - because Harry may not realise how people interpret that - it can end up very Marie-Antoinette milkmaid. I'm normal as long as I'm able to holiday as I wish, live as I wish, do as I wish. Normal isn't just pushing a supermarket trolley - for most of us, it is about worries and compromises.
For William, I would really like to see him sit down with his godfather Constantine and have an honest talk about what it means to be an former king - how you watch powerless as the country where you once had influence goes on - sometimes disastrously - without you. How you live on the fringes of active royals - how you become a celebrity, not a person of importance. I doubt such a conversation will ever occur - we're dealing with pride - but that is what a godfather is for.
I know this is a serious comment at a time when we're talking about Ascot - and I do love all the fun of Ascot - but I do think William and Harry are pushing back the veil possibly a bit too much and it's time for them to define their role by action, not words.
