Day six of the Cambridges' royal tour of Canada brought the most eagerly anticipated engagement, with Prince George and Princess Charlotte stealing the show at a Government House children's party.
Kensington Palace released a statement to say: "The Duke and Duchess really happy this has been put on for them and think it’s a great opportunity to play with other children."

George, Charlotte and twenty-four other children were treated to a petting zoo with miniature ponies, balloon animals and a puppet show.

Prince George was initially feeling a little shy according to Rebecca English, however, he soon perked up when he spotted a water gun and started squirting Princess Charlotte with it.

Charlotte was particularly fond of a black and white rabbit she met.
So much so she hugged him before moving on. Undoubtedly one of the best photos of the day :)

If one had to surmise the highlights of the day for George and Charlotte, I think 'Bubbles and Balloons' would be an entirely apt description.

It's lovely to see informal, relaxed photos like these - offering a glimpse into the Cambridges' family life. The children's party and accompanying activities were an excellent way of achieving the perfect setting for the appearance.

At one point Charlotte saw another little girl with a yellow balloon and reached out for it but the girl put it behind her back. "Would you like a balloon Charlotte?" William said before picking her up. Charlotte was heard calling William "Dada" several times as he held her.

'Children's entertainer Paul Kilshaw, 53, from Victoria, made Prince George and Princess Charlotte balloon animals. He said: "It was totally over the top. I made a teddy bear and a flower for Charlotte and made George a tree and a volcano. When I made him the spider he started to laugh and pushed it in my face then pushed it in dad's face.
"William said 'We try making balloons at home but it doesn't work'. "At first George wasn't interested in getting one until Charlotte was getting one, then he was right over. He wanted what she had. George especially asked for a volcano and he was very proud to tell me all about volcanos. When I started with the orange flames he was pleased to tell me 'And that's lava'. Charlotte asked for a flower, I think she said 'flower' because the other little girls were asking for flowers."

The tea party at Government House was held with children from the Victoria area and their families. Among those attending the event were children and families from the Military Family Resource Centre, an independent non-profit organization that provides programs and services to military members. The Duke and Duchess met with families, including those currently serving in the Canadian military.
I thought it a lovely touch to include military families on this special day; no doubt it's a very special moment the children present will look back on in years to come. Background on the Military Family Resource Centre: In 1991, the Department of National Defence officially recognized the important contributions military families make to the Canadian Forces. It established the Military Family Support Program, and authorized the creation of Military Family Resource Centres at each Canadian Forces installation. Today, the Esquimalt MFRC is one of forty-three MFRCs located in Canada and abroad. Like all MFRCs, we are a community-based organization with the sole responsibility of addressing the needs of the military family.

'One of the guests, a little girl called Brielle, three, from Victoria, was delighted to meet Charlotte. Her mum Andrea, a charity volunteer, said: “Charlotte was chewing on her fingers so I asked if she was teething and yes, it’s very normal. She talked about bath time and how she [Charlotte] is always hungry.
Dad Lucas Kenward, CO of HMCS Edmonton, a Canadian warship, said about George: “He was definitely into the bubbles. It was much more intimate than I anticipated. It wasn’t about the Duke and Duchess coming down the stairs. It was nice to see they have kids that arise all our kids, down to earth, interacting. It didn’t feel scripted at all.” Andrea added: “I think they’re really enjoying their time here. They said it was fabulous.”

The children also visited Willow’s Beach, which is a popular spot for families in Victoria. The beach is one of Victoria's most popular swimming areas. Its shallow, protected water is suitable for young children, while views of Discovery Island and Mount Baker make basking, swimming or paddling there just that much more beautiful.
The Duchess debuted another brand today choosing the elegant SEE BY CHLOÉ Pointelle-knit cotton-blend dress (with many thanks to Kate's Closet for the ID). The French fashion house was founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion. See is a younger line of the Chloé luxury brand. This line has manufactured ready-to-wear, handbags, and accessories since 2001, and the line of apparel is intended to target the younger generation and is more affordable.
The $460 dress is from the brand Fall 2016 collection which was described as "careful, youthful and poetic". The pointelle-knit cotton-blend dress is underpinned with a tonal slip and has a flattering fit-and-flare silhouette and is finished with a ruffled collar and cuffs. Moving onto what the little Prince and Princess wore. Charlotte's lovely blue and coral dress is the Pepa & Co Classic Handsmocked Dress. UFO Mary Jane Shoes and her blue Amaia Kids bow.
It turns out the blue cardigan Charlotte wore is the same one from Amaia George wore to St Mary's hospital the day she was born. It's a very nice touch and the little Amaia cardigan has quite the sartorial significance. Amaia Arrieta, co-owner of the children's brand told People: "I'm so happy that she chose our cardigan, first for Prince George and now for Princess Charlotte – it's so lovely and exciting to see our pieces enjoyed and worn in different ways." It's interesting to note George's cardigan had five buttons whereas Charlotte's has four - it may have been altered to fit Charlotte.

What was your favourite moment from the party?
I thought the children would go to Beacon Hill Park. Its gorgeous. I walked through it on Sunday and went to that Beach as well. I was at the welcome ceremony on Saturday and it was amazing. Kate's dress was gorgeous. She is so thin in person! And really so elegant it makes me tired trying to pull that off and she seems to do it effortlessly! Great pictures from the party. We walked by Government house on Sunday and you can see in the grounds and they are really beautiful.

ReplyDeleteMy quick comment on clothing is that I don't love or hate this dress, it's kind of blah to me. but between Kate and the kids I am left wondering what era we're living in, it's a bit strange that she always goes for these very old fashioned looks when they're all seen together as a family. Compare it to family outings by other European royals - or even the Obamas when their girls were younger. It's a little weird I have to say.
They are not in their own backyard. The Cambridge's are representing the Queen and are acting as guests. Nothing "weird" about it.

DeleteThe kid's are wearing this style as it is kind of their royal uniform for public events (like Kate wears coat dresses and hats, for example). Royal style is to be timeless, and to create nods to continuity and to the past/present and future. Not only are they classic British children's style, you can see William/Charles/TheQueen wearing similiar things as children. They are all on official duty here - even the kids - representing the Queen. This is what they wear in the UK as well - when on official public duty (the balcony, the christening for example). I am sure they dress much differently when at home in the country, when its private.
DeleteAnd about the Queen's photo: I suspect that The Queen wanted Edwards children, Louise and James, to be in the photo with her and the other children in the family. They are, after all, very close to her, and not much older than the great grandchildren. Their cousins are all much older than they are, after all.

WOW! What a day! Absolutley perfect! Bubbles and Balloons seems to have been the flavor of the day! Perfect set up event for the kids! I doubt they even noticed the cameras! What a great time for all and nice seeing a little peek into their personalities. William and Kate are really hands on and present and it makes me so happy to see them interact as a family!

DeleteOf course Charlotte and George have stolen the show. They look adorable. When, traditionally speaking, will she starting dressing George in long trousers instead of shorts? I'm not in love with the dress she selected, and I think she is again too dressed up for the occasion. Based on what William and the other parents are wearing it seems she would have been perfectly fine to wear long trousers/jeans and a blazer of some kind. I do like the way her hair is styled today.

DeleteAnon 21.20. The photographers were only allowed there the first hour and the party went on for longer. None of the pictures show them interacting with other kids (probably because those don't sell as much) but in the videos you can see some interaction and especially William & Kate talking with the adults. I'm sure W+K could relax a bit more after the cameras went away.
DeleteAnd no other children were guests of honor at a tea party. Dense???? I see two very happy children having a great time and all of the comments from the guests said the family was lovely. Considering how people dress nowadays to go anywhere (sloppy t-shirts, yoga pants stretched across bodies that shouldn't be wearing them) I will take Kate'a style anyway. Finally George and Charlotte are not like "everybody else" especially in terms of Canadian children.
DeleteIf you look at the videos, you get a better sense of what other people wore to the party. Some (not all) of the other moms wore dresses too. If Kate had shown up in slacks or jeans, she would have made them feel overdressed.
DeleteIt's not like George was wearing a bow tie. He was dressed traditionally, but nothing over the top, IMO. I think the more severe criticism is not taking THEIR tradition into consideration. I would not expect an American child to dress like this, but why criticize George for wearing it?
DeleteI think they were pretty spot on, I love the traditional socks and shorts on George; and the smocked party dress on Charlotte. As for Catherine, I think she looked perfect for the occasion too. I actually saw a woman in one of the videos wearing a fur across her shoulder and a hat!
DeleteI love how Kate is dressed and I love her respect for tradition! The other mothers were in dresses as well and everybody was appropriate, including the children. Actually I like how she dresses George. I think George is a little boy and don't think he is worried about how he looks. Nor do I think were the other children or parents....by all accounts a lovely time was had by all. I also think Rebecca is right that after the cameras were gone, everybody probably relaxed a little and interacted more...its usually what happens at any children's party. Parents concerned their childrens will behave, not sure of the other parents (let alone royal parents :) ), and then after awhile the children having a good time and parents sharing stories brings everybody together! As for the dress code, I think the right chord was struck by all and the children seemed to enjoy themselves. cc

DeleteAHHHHHHHHH I frequently visit Beacon Hill Park and Willows Beach! We love to picnic at Willows Beach and watch the sunset. I'm glad they are able to get out and about and enjoy our lovely city. Lovely to see the kids this morning! Love Kate's dress! I may take a walk by Government House later today and see if I can see anything other than guards. Sad that the royal visit is coming towards the end!

ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for this day for a long time!! I can't get over how cute George and Charlotte are! It's also given me a chance to see what Charlotte is like - she seems to be a very lively and cheerful tot. I loved seeing the relationship the kids have with their parents. You can tell Will and Kate have done a great job in parenting.

I applaud Kate for wearing this to a kids-related occasion! Just shows how laid-back she seems about sticky fingers (or dog hair like that pic a few weeks ago of her carrying Lupo in her pristine white dress). Moms (and kids) can wear white, too ;-) In fact, I lost count of how many white boho dresses I saw at our friends' kid's birthday party over the summer.

Lekheeka, I was critical of Natasha during the last tour because I thought that every outfit was an epic fail, however, I'm sure sometimes she is just overruled by Kate who knows what she likes and wants to have her say. I mean, the dress had a slip under so there was never any risk of anything showing. She looked like she was dressed as the host of a kids birthday party, which seems about the right level for this event.

DeleteAnon 21.24. I don't agree at all. If you look at the other guests alot of them are wearing dresses. I see the dresscode for this party kind of like a extended family kids party or a relaxed garden wedding. Nice late-summerish dresses, not-your-everyday-kids-clothes and shirts on the dudes.
DeleteI thought about the dress while watching the videos. Although no one else was in cream, there were a number of other moms in dresses or skirts so I don't think she was terribly overdressed. Depending on which reporter you follow, this was either a play date or a garden party of sorts. A dress would definitely work for a garden party.

DeleteI loved seeing the children at the party. They are wonderfully expressive and that picture of Charlotte by the balloons looking up at George was too cute. They are just gorgeous kids. Loved seeing both Kate and William interacting, dancing, cuddling and chasing them around. My only point of contention was the dress. Why would you wear a cream dress to a children's party? Why would you wear a dress at all? Bending over, kneeling down, etc. I just don't get it. I loved it - she looks very, very nice in it, but why???
ReplyDeletePerhaps one of the reasons why Kate opted for a dress was that in this way, Charlotte in her little dress could feel: I'm just like Mummy! She's wearing a dress and I'm wearing mine, too! Not that a little one like her would think about it this way but the feeling beneath it may be quite strong, I believe.

She obviously prefers dresses and she got through the whole party kneeling, picking up her kids, bending down, and there were no mishaps. So why does it matter if something "could have" happened? For what it's worth, I LOVE this dress and think she looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteNot trousers necessarily. But wearing an expensive, white dress and heels to a children's party seems odd. I live in a wealthy part of London and if I saw a woman dressed like that at a children's party I would think she had more money than sense.

ReplyDeleteI like everything about the dress except the collar. I don't have anything against it being high, but that ruffling is a bit much. If it was just a regular slim knitted turtleneck I would have liked it better. And I see no issue with her being in a dress, especially not since it had a very solid slip under. I think she looked very pretty. And the shoes fit the occation and the dress.
ABC News has a longish (7+ min) video of the family at the party. Much more fun seeing the kids (and parents, come to that) in action.

And the one of him with his son hugging him with his arms wrapped around Wills neck. He's obviously a good dad and those 2 kids are a credit to him and Kate. Despite everything else that gets thrown at them, no one can say they are not doing a great job as parents, help nonwithstanding. I think it's great we get to see this side of them with their kids. And no wonder they want to have more time with them when they're young and protect them. That time goes so fast!

ReplyDeleteHe kind of did then, but they were in a small room so it wasn't really much choice. Here it was open grounds with alot of things to explore and distract you so it's not surprising that they didn't interact much with the other kids (at least during the hour cameras were allowed, who knows what they did afterwards)
DeleteFirst, I was struck by how into their own worlds all of the children we caught a glimpse of were. None of them were interacting with much other than their parents while flitting from distraction to distraction. Also with 1:1 ratios of children to adults in an environment where (likely) few of them know each other, it wasn't surprising to see a lot of the toddlers clinging pretty tightly to a parent. The kids didn't seem to be given any chances to create their own entertainment.
DeleteI also want to comment on the dress. I don't think it out of place or inappropriate at all. The cream colour was a splendid contrast to the greenery. Ideal for photos. In several shots (more than the ones here) I noticed that a few other mothers were in dresses. One had a lovely coat, and one wore a hat. It was a mixture of styles and degrees of dressy-ness (spell checker keeps changing that to dressings!) That mix is a very West Coast thing--you'll get people at the opera dressed to the nines, dowagers in their best gowns from the 60s and 70s, occasionally a man in a formal kilt, while some bloke will be there in khaki shorts, plaid shirt and hiking boots.
I don't think that Catherine is the kind of mother who worries about a dress getting dirty. (Someone will clean it for her.) Plus, as someone else mentioned, it did have a hint of a princess vibe.
They're still at an awkward age for socialising, watching the footage it seemed to me like other kids tried to engage them or vice versa but nobody really "clicked". That will get easier as they get a bit older I am sure.
DeleteThis isn't my favorite dress, although it is very pretty, but what I love most about these pictures/videos is that you can see very clearly that George and Charlotte love their parents and are loved right back. The way they are carried, attended to, reach for their parents, go to them with questions and demands - that's a very normal way for a loved and loving child to react, and makes me think all the better of the Cambridges. -CH in TX

ReplyDeleteI personally thought Kate's dress was just right - she looked like a princess in pretty white lace and that's what little girls would want to see - not just another mum in jeans or trousers. I thought she looked perfect and it was a lovely day arranged. Don't mind the wedges at all because of the grass (although little girls do love heels!! I remember wanting to wear my mum's.)
I agree about the dress, Julia. What a let down it would be for the children if the two princesses showed up to the party in ordinary dungarees.
DeleteAdorable! Prince George seems a mite shy but not Princess Charlotte - she appears a real little go-getter. To me she looks very like Kate did as a child, with a few of Queen Elizabeth's facial expressions thrown in. Kate is again perfection in her cream Cloe dress and wedges. Airy and elegant. Love that dress in the navy and black also!

I can’t quite put my finger on why, but when I saw Charlotte in these photos I immediately thought of her great-great Aunt, Princess Margaret. Love Kate’s outfit today and glad it was warm enough for them to be out and about with no jackets or coats. Hope they all had a good time! ReplyDeleteI feel like applauding Kate for waering a cream dress. That takes guts! And she made it!!! She survived the event without showing inappropriate parts of her body and she looked clean and tidy throughout : ) Guess it comes down to having enough helping hands to keep away the dirt.
But I love the concept of being overdressed in an understated way. Beautifully done darling Kate!
What a great engagement! They are such a lovely family and it was awesome to get a small glimpse into their "vibe" and watch them interact as a unit. Little Miss Charlotte is so spunky and she looks like a mixture of Kate (or maybe Pippa?) and HM The Queen. And Gorgeous George...I just want to squeeze him!

What an odd thing to wear to a children's party where you know you'll be chasing after your child and squatting down to pick them up or play with them. I would have chosen pants or a longer dress.

Sarah Chatto looks much more like her father than like her mother, but I can see the resemblance. However, I think Charlotte is a combination of Middleton traits and those Princess Eugenie also inherited from the Queen Mother. Charlotte and George look very different.
DeleteGeorge, by the way, seems to have inherited some of the diffidence both Prince Charles and Prince William showed as small children. A loving upbringing will no doubt give him confidence as he matures.

DeleteThis visit was so wonderful - the glimpses of the sweet little royal family managed to pull out huge togetherness in the B.C. family. It felt wonderful to stand by the Parliament Buildings in Victoria and feel our Canadian family enjoying this great occasion together!

It looks like something I would have worn in 1981! I would have put her in a midi length of goucho pants with espadrilles and a light knit top.

Also, look, there are a different number of buttons, different coloured buttons and the cardigan itself is shorter. I don't know why they say it's theirs but.. :)

DeleteMy Diana moment on this tour was the Taste of BC event with that clam. I just had this really vivid image of her collapsing into a fit of the giggles. Still miss her so much - she would have been such a stabilising force in the troubled world we live in at the moment, and you're so right FG and Royalfan, she would have adored those two kids.
DeleteFloridagirl, your comment has touched me, I felt that same brief sense of sadness that Diana is not there to share in the special moments. I tragically lost my only daughter thirteen years ago. She left behind her eight month old son, my only grandchild. The first day he walked down the hallways towards me as a baby, I was filled with happiness for his first steps and overwhelmed with sadness that his mother was not there to see it. She would have so loved it. But in the same moment I also knew that she was right there sharing in it because I was instantly overcome with immense love. Can't really explain it, but felt it and know it. I have had the privilege of being in my grandson's life for fourteen years and having countless bittersweet moments of all his "firsts" as he was growing and his mother not being there. There is sadness too because he will never really know, firsthand, the wonderful person his mother was. Yes, life is definitely not fair, but somehow knowing that she is with us brings some comfort.

I think this is my most favorite event of all time. First of all, the weather, trees, slight glow of the sun made it look like a perfect day. Then to see the family enjoying time together.... just wonderful. I love Kate's dress. She looks great in cream.

It was nice today to also see William and Catherine in mommy dadda mode and having a great time with there kids. Great choice in my opinion in shoes for Catherine. Heels would habe kept sinking into the grass. Dress beautiful not my favourite but still pretty. I love all the personal touches she puts to her outfits. The kids looked so so adorable and nice to see pictures of the family of four. Wish i could have been a fly on the wall for that. Great day. Thank you so much for all the photos and information. ReplyDeleteOh my goodness cuteness overload. Thanks so much Charlotte. This day has been the absolutely best of the tour so far. Those adorable children. I am so happy to see them interacting and acting like normal children. Loved Kate's dress and she pulled off cream at a children's party and it stayed pristine. If I had done that the dress would have changed colors by the end of the day. I am so thankful for this past week but it sure went by fast. A few more days and we will have withdrawals. Oh well, maybe the 11th wont seem so far off.

I saw Prince George enjoying the bubbles so much, it made me think of that movie...
Charlotte sure seems like a confident little lady! Shows no fear - not dogs, ponies, bunnies, nor balloon men! And I love her dress. I had one exactly like it when I was a little girl (almost 60 years ago!)
ReplyDeleteKate's dress is beautiful - but, as others have noted, completely inappropriate for this engagement. All that bending, stooping, picking children up & down, over and over again. I'm amazed there were no wardrobe malfunctions or unwanted photo angles. Good thing it wasn't windy!

ReplyDeleteNot pictures but video. Both William and Kate can be seen talking to parents. But when there are kids involved, people will be distracted by the kids. The parents had their own kids to keep track of for example. Plus, I'm sure they relaxed a bit after the cameras left and could have the kids explore a bit free-er, giving them more time to interact. The point was probably multiple. 1. a good engagement to give the media their money shots without having an awkward lineup for the kids 2. involving military and community and show appriciation 3. meeting people. I mean, just having been at that event and said a few words is a big deal for the people there!

I didn't see any photos of George or Charlotte engaging other children at all. As much as I enjoyed watching George and Charlotte to see how they've grown, the whole thing seemed surreal to me, and instead of having the warm fuzzies like some here, the "play date" left me feeling cold and like the public, including the children and parents there, had somehow been played, duped, used or whatever the appropriate term like that would be. I felt very sorry for George and Charlotte and everyone who got all dressed up to attend that "party".
Yes, one couple had a mini conversation with William and Kate, but that was in the script. Not their exact words exactly, but the "encounter" was in the plan.

ReplyDeleteI can't get over little Charlotte's personality, and want more of it. She is her own little, yet sharply self willed mind, walking her little fit actively away too. She got curious about those balloons, observed, got it out of the bag and tried to figure out how to make some design out of it. I think she is also a serious child, personality attributed to QE as a child, looks so much like her with some disposition. George might nail the books; he knows what he wants w/o pretense. Sweet childhood, and the parents youth as if in yesteryears. Time goes so fast.

Sorry to be negative, but this whole picnic appeared very forced and staged, with the guests, including the royals just going through the motions to look like they were having a good time. I just watched ABC news video. The whole thing was just one big photo shoot to showcase the two children, and all the other guests were props. Prince George did not interact with other children, and both children spent most of their time wanting to be picked up by their parents. I know this video was just a "snapshot" of the whole afternoon, but that is my opinion based on what we have seen.
ReplyDeleteWow really?! Uhm... I guess people see what they want to see. I saw kids, that don't know eachother, hanging out with their parents and going to all the distractions in the garden. I thought the families looked to have a wonderful time. The ABC video showed multiple interactions between the adults and all the kids seemed preoccupied by whatever entertainment they were drawn to. As someone said up above, when it's such an even ratio between adults and kids, they usually keep together. If it was more like a kindergarden with one adult per 6 kids then the kids naturally are drawn to eachother.

DeleteYou're right about it being a snapshot rather than the full picture. Photographers were only allowed for a small part of it at the beginning. Because it was right at the start all of the children were just getting acclimated to that new environment and each other so of course they can be a bit clinging when unsure so that is what the photos caught.
DeleteI have no way of knowing if things changed later but it would be hard to believe that a 3 year old and a 16 month old wouldn't naturally end up playing with other children once they settled in.
I also can't imagine William and Kate isolating themselves and their children from others there. They were military families and W&K hold that cause very dear. From all evidence, they have truly good hearts and I can't imagine them agreeing to attend this without truly being there for those families. Besides, even if that is the case, that would be very bad PR and they wouldn't want that.
It's too bad photographers weren't allowed later in to the party after everyone warmed to each other and weren't distracted by the new-ness of it all. :)
The whole afternoon(?) I am afraid they did not stay that long, the whole afternoon was private, let's not forget, in the middle of a strenuous 7-day tour.

I agree completely, I had the exact same thoughts upon viewing the video. Totally staged event designed to show off the children. However, having said that, I understand why it was done. They know that people want to see the children, and this was a way to do it in a controlled way. If they shield them from the public completely, they will just become more desirable targets for the paparazzi.

DeleteBut, one vital component of the monarchy is the "photo op". Although I have a great admiration for a lot of the royal family (not all), I'm under no illusion that what we see sometimes IS "psychological warfare" so to speak. ;)
As the Queen herself says, "I have to be seen to be believed." The Monarchy thrives like it does in part because they are seen and are a "business" and what better "spokes people" then Charlotte and George (by the way, as much as I love them, I do believe it could be seen as a gift or as cruel to bring a child into a world where they are on display, are walking billboards, and have no freedom)?
So yes, I agree that part of the children's party was a photo op otherwise they would've made it private like they have chosen to do before. But because we were given a chance to see those children I've psychologically "bought in to" the Family even more.
But, I also got a chance, because of who the guests were, to remember those children whose parents are deployed. They could've chosen to invite diplomats' families if it were truly for just a photo op.
I do believe Kate, William, the Queen and a few others truly have good hearts and want to use their "celebrity" to better the world and promote decent causes but to do that, they have to be seen.
Again, I agree with you, that on the surface it could appear to some as just a photo op and staged for that reason. It is a shame they didn't show pictures of the children and William and Kate interacting more which I assume they did based on their past behaviors.
Maybe it was for security and privacy of the families who are military families? I don't know. :)
I agree that I was surprised that there was minimal interaction with other attendees at the event. I was thinking it might be because the space was large and open and other parents likely are not approaching W&K themselves (I would be intimidated!) Still I think the Duke and Duchess should have made more of an effort to engage with others there--who knows perhaps they did, but from the minimal footage we saw they were very insular with their children. I think it is further reflective of their desire to keep their family private. I actually do not consider this a criticism of them, I just think perhaps they should plan events where they can shine and where they are most comfortable. I think this event was a stretch for them. Still, their children are beautiful and they are obviously doting, loving parents.
DeleteThe media was there only for about an hour. So we do not know how the children did after the media left. And there were only two,pool press people there. All these children that were there were from parents that are deployed. It was not do much for the Royal children to interact with the others but to give the other children a good time.
DeleteI think most children with cameras clicking and flashing in their face would want their parents to pick them up, too. The photographers were probably calling out their names to get them to look into their direction. The press were only allowed to stay an hour. The party was probably a lot more relaxed after that.

DeleteRegarding Kates dress, I agree it's wrong for the occasion, and I just think it's a rather ugly dress anyway. Would have liked to see her in maybe a fuller calf length or knee length skirt with a crisp white blouse and thin cardigan sweater, or a cotton blazer.

This is one of my very favourite posts, seeing all four of the family together and glimpsing more of the childrens' personalities!! Kate looked beautiful and as graceful as ever. I can only imagine, having small children of our own, that it must have been quite nerve-wracking watching after them with all the unexpected ways that young children can behave, especially for them having the world's eyes literally on their every move. I have so much respect for both William and Kate. They hold themselves so well, come across as genuinely lovely, down-to-earth people in such a public spotlight where everyone has an opinion either positive or negative, fair or unfair. I don't envy the scrutiny that comes with their position, and think they are absolutely outstanding. Diana would have been so proud of William and his choice in Kate, and the lovely man, husband and father he ia. I have read this blog for years and loved every post...but only commented once or twice. Fantastic blog, Charlotte. Thanks for all the time and information you put into each post!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting to watch - the photos and the videos. Prince George seems to be very sensitive, very careful and rather shy (that look on his face, like VERY worried and "oooh, I´m not sure about what´s going on here.." - we´ve seen it so many times now). I don´t like stereotypes but he seems to be the "perfect first born", reflecting all the worries and insecurities us parents naturally have with them. Plus all the rather disturbing experiences for his mum during the first trimester of her pregnancy with him - of course, it was so much easier the second time around (not "nicer" of course, being sick again, but at least she knew it would end and what to do about it). Yeah, it´s not easy to be "the first one", what with being "in line to the throne" on top of that!! So, bless the little prince, I hope for him his confidence will grow over the years to come, I´m sure his parents will help him with that! I want to emphasize that all I´ve just said, I do not mean it as criticism or judgement at all!! He´s cute and lovely, it´s just what I observe.
ReplyDeletePrincess Charlotte reminds me so much of HM! I think she looks very much like her, although you never know, my daughter looked so much like her father when she was little, and now people always say she´s so much like me, so "there´s room for change", haha... But the little princess seems to be so sure of herself, knowing exactly what she wants. And that frown she puts on when she´s not getting it (yet!)... it´s so cute to see the personalities especially when so young. So cute, both of them...
I agree with those who say that both children did not seem to be very keen to interacting with other children. I guess you can see that living with constant security issues does affect their everyday lives... being with other children on a daily basis (like going to the playground, having lots of other children as direct neighbours) is obviously not what they can experience, no wonder, Anmer Hall is not really within a toddler´s "running distance" to other neighbours with children, plus the security issues...
Still, it was very lovely to see how the family interacts and that the children have a very good and very close contact to their parents.
As those little ones caught all my attention, I didn´t really care about any dresses/outfits of their parents, they could both have come in old bags I wouldn´t have minded, it was so nice to see them with their adorable little ones!!
The Cambridges are wearing the colors of Canada and England together (white, red, blue), therefore I think the withe on Kate is very convenient. It is a garden party, they are the guests of honor, a nice tea dress is perfect IMHO. There are other ladies wearing dresses, no one with a long one, so a long dress on Kate would have been rather odd. No wardrobe malfunctions happened, so why so many complaints about the possibility of it? It didn't happen because the dress was conveniently given a pencil underskirt. As to the cardigan, I agree with Rebecca, they look similar but are not the same: it's nice for brother and sister to have a dress looking the same. Nice choice mum Kate!
ReplyDeleteMy only comment is that it appears that the Cambridge family really didn't interact with the other families present at the party. From Kate's dress to even the attire of the children, this really felt more like a photo opportunity for the Royal family. That bothers me because that seems so uncharacteristic of William and Catherine.
ReplyDeleteOh what a wonderful treat! Charlotte bouncing up and down on Moose the dog was priceless, and George's face with the bubbles - adorable. It was great to see the interaction between William and Kate and their kids, although I share some of the sadness that they didn't appear to interact with the other kids.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting a dress from Kate today - she wore one on each engagement with George on the Aus/NZ tour and I thought this would follow the same pattern. I wasn't expecting a cream one though! Total respect for braving that! Not a massive fan of the dress, although it's one that's growing on me a bit. However, today was always more about the children than Kate. I have to say, I do wish Charlotte and George had been dressed in something other than blue today, given that they were in blue on the arrival day too.
On the whole, though, a fantastic day with some truly memorable family images. A real highlight.
I think what other commenters have noted is true. This was one big photo opportunity. There seemed to be no interaction between W and K and the other parents and G and C with other children. My guess is that the other parents and children were told not to approach the royals and to engage only when spoken to first. Why else would none of the guests approach them? The Canadian govt had published rules of etiquette in advance of the royal visit and one women (I think the woman who hugged Kate on a walkabout) said that she had made G and C slippers but wasn't allowed to give them. It seems that this visit has been very tightly controlled, as it should be, but this resulted in the controlled photo shoot yesterday.

ReplyDeletePhotographers were only there for the first few minutes when G&C arrived, then left to give all the kids and their parents privacy. We have stories from the rest of the event but not photos of the whole thing.
DeleteWow - what gorgeous, joyful children George and Charlotte are! These pictures convey so much regarding what a lovely family these four Cambridges have come to be. The pictures of William with his children are lovely to see given what we've seen from Royal parents in years past. A bit of Diana's influence has passed on to the next generation.

Children can be unpredictable at that age; over all, it showed the children's personality, inclination, individually and as a team of siblings. It is like the media here and across the pond made a big deal out of PG not giving back a five to Canada's PM. PG might have to hung around more with Uncle Harry more. He is probably more of give five person/whatever his political and conditioned thoughts, at least he picks up on free interactions with people.
ReplyDeleteAs far as controlled, where it looked some what uncomfortable was as they entered the play area. The other children wanted to sort of mix into the arriving children and they were held back. At the same time, Photographers were in a rushed action. A reminder, they are the honorable guests, special and royal? It was a bit old fashioned. Australia and PG's children game time was fun and interesting. Children are children, will be as happy if not more, interacting with other people of their ages, as much as admiring animals.

I understand what you mean. TO have them play with other children also would have show cased their human interaction in their own age and ways. There were animal interactions, Charlotte was a natural with them. The planners might have had to walk a fine and cautious line. Still the planners did a neat attractive highlights which drew the children's attention. Let us say, it was a private setting for them as a first official visit as siblings. Photo OP worth any criticism after travelling miles and miles in the air. Well, perfection even in a "perfect world" is a different story.

I love Kate's dress, I'm always a sucker for cream or white sweaters so to have part of this lovely dress be made of sweater material is right up my alley. I think it's perfect for the occasion - a dress with a light airy feel for an outdoor children's party, but with a heavier material and long sleeves appropriate for cooler weather. I disagree that she should have worn something flowery and billowy. I believe that would have been completely wrong...too summery and informal. Kate was able to wear dresses like that in India, but they were appropriate because of the climate and the country she was in.
ReplyDeleteOf course the children are adorable, as everyone is saying. It's fascinating to see how they are changing. George is so cute and will surely be a handsome man when he grows up. Charlotte, despite being a combination, in my opinion, of Carole Middleton and the Queen, is certainly very cute and will probably have enough of Diana and Kate in her to become a pretty young woman someday.
Prince George's personality seems to have changed a bit as he's grown older and more aware of his surroundings. I think he seems like he feels shy and cautious of all of the people and the cameras. He seems to be worrying slightly upon arriving at the party, and taking a long time to feel comfortable. But it's also typical of many children that age, to cling to their mothers a bit (especially boys in my experience!).
I am really not liking the styling of Kate's hair this trip. It's been discussed before that her hair itself doesn't seem as full and lustrous, which may be true, but to me it's been the way the top of her hair has been styled, too poofy on top and how it's combed back from towards the back of the top of her head, is so old fashioned and ageing on her. I know she probably has trouble trusting the people around her, but it's time to get a new hair stylist! Amanda (forget her last name) seems to have the job because of her history with the royal family, having cut William and Harry's hair as children. What has she done since? Does she have a lot of experience doing contemporary, stylish women's hairstyles? People seem to love Kate's updos, but I'm not a huge fan. Sometimes they look good but sometimes, like on Wednesday in Whitehorse, they just look like she has an odd beehive sitting on the bak of her neck.
I thought Kate's dress was lovely. She was wise to add the belt; the dress looked unfinished without it. And of course she wanted the children to look their best for their one public engagement.
ReplyDeleteKate's dress for the party has a Celtic look, very appropriate for Canada. In addition to red and white for the flag, maple leaves, the tartan, cowboy and hiking boots, and Canadian designers, she has worn green for the forests, blue for the air and sea, and grey for the mountains. Every outfit has been symbolic, and Kate has looked beautiful. She dressed up for the native people and their ceremonies, and her look was appropriate everywhere.
Kate and William were not able to visit the fire torn parts of the Canadian forests this time (they did in 2011), but there was perhaps a subtle reference in her pine green coat to the damage disease and fire are wreaking. It seems to me that, perhaps with the exception of the Vancouver dress, Kate took full charge of her wardrobe for this trip, and controlled it skillfully. It has been elegant, grownup, and thoughtful.

ReplyDeleteI didnt mind the dress or the wedges, but I didnt care for the choice of it today. Beautiful, but with all the kneeling Kate was doing, I would have preferred her in in a wide leg pants and top combo (if the top part of the dress came as a top it would have been perfect). Even the wedges were fine, but I would have preferred a cute top, wide leg pants (she never wears those and it would have been beautiful on her this day), and wedges, kind of like the ones she wore the day after the wedding. Not fussy, perfect for a kids party, and appropriate for representing the queen. I think her wearing a white dress, just looks odd at this event, but pretty nonetheless.
These children are adorable! Their Royal Cuteness! Moving on to Kate's attire - I have mixed feelings for this dress. On the one hand, it's great to see Kate embrace new brands and I like the way she accessorised it. Yet it lacks that pop of colour. Moreover, I think this dress could have been worn on another occasion not on a play date. Also I am not a fan of the high neck 'Victorian' fashion, personally I think it can be dowdy and ageing.

We all have such different tastes in clothes! I loved this dress, thought it was elegant and perfect. I have thought all of her clothes on this trip have been amazing - because this is exactly what I would wear. I love vintage-style, and am so glad she has worn what she has.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if it was on this board, but I've noticed several comments this trip about her wearing boots over skinny jeans/pants (trousers), thinking it was not age appropriate now that she was in her mid thirties. (!!??) This must be a generational thing (what do all of you think?) because I myself am in my mid thirties, we (friends/peers and I) wear this style all the time, especially here in Victoria. I have to say, with everything she has worn, she fits in perfectly with fashion here on the west coast (although her clothes are definitely designer, more glamorous and expensive than ours!).
I also noticed somewhere that someone was wondering why she was dressed so casually by wearing this outfit. These clothes were very tastefully chosen for her trips for her First Nations visits, and was not at all too casual for her location and was very respectful to the people she was visiting.
That said, it's hard to pick a favourite, though I did absolutely love the red gown she wore to the reception!
George and Charlotte were very cute yesterday. Especially Charlotte and the bubbles!
