Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands, is an archipelago located off the northwest coast of British Columbia. It is the ancestral home of the Haida Nation. The breathtaking natural beauty and Argillite carvings, totem poles and ancient Haida villages encourage visitors from all over the world to learn more about Indigenous culture and environmental stewardship. Haida Gwaii means 'Islands of the people'.
The Duke and Duchess experienced a Haida prayer, and a song and dance performance with representatives of the Haida Nation during the welcoming ceremony at the Haida Heritage Centre and Museum.

The royals experienced a celebration of the past, present and future of Haida art and culture.
The Haida Heritage Centre at Ḵay Llnagaay is an award-winning Aboriginal cultural tourism attraction located on Haida Gwaii on British Columbia’s Northwest coast. Through the Ḵay Llnagaay Heritage Centre the living culture of the Haida people is celebrated through language, art and stories.
Next, the Duke and Duchess visited the new Haidi Gwaii General Hospital in Queen Charlotte. The replacement hospital will enable Northern Health clinicians and staff to continue to deliver client-focused health care services in a modern environment that will improve outcomes for patients.
They heard from new mums how the new hospital means they can stay on Haida Gwaii to give birth.
The Duke and Duchess visited the long-term care wing, where they meet residents in the common room.
The Duchess looked excited as the couple approached the next leg of the day - a boat ride and fishing.
The couple took a boat ride on the Highlander Ranger from the Queen Charlotte boat launch.
Kate looked a little squeamish as she picked up a freshly caught fish.
William and Kate enjoyed a spot of fishing.

The Duchess debuted a smart new Smythe blazer today. It very much looks like Kate wore the (aply named) Wool Duchess Blazer (with thanks to Kate Middleton Style and What Kate Wore). The army green blazer features peak lapels, long sleeves with button cuffs, front button closure, chest and waist welt pockets. It retails for $595 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

I thought it a fitting choice for Kate to choose a new blazer by the Canadian brand. The Duchess wore their navy One Button Blazer during the 2011 royal tour of Canada and it's been a firm fixture in her wardrobe ever since - often paired with skinny jeans and wedges. I expect we'll see the new green one in the future too.

When William and Kate went fishing the Duchess put on a parka by Troy London. It looks like Kate wore their £350 Wax Parka. Kate's wore a plaited Alice band for the majority of the day (it's thought to be a band as Kate changed into her leopard print alice band when they went fishing). It's a very fresh, youthful look for the Duchess.

When I first saw her I thought maybe one or more pieces might be Ralph Lauren. The look is totally his design. Wish they were, but she still looks great. I will never forget the gorgeous red Preen cocktail dress, and how magnificent Kate looked that evening. Also what struck me, is what wonderful and loving parents they both are. ReplyDeleteOn another note, many commenters have complained about the lack of interaction this tour. However a large focus of their visit has been on our First Nations and First Nation people regard it as an honour and respect to entertain guests and bless them. Their lack of participation should be regarded as a sign of respect, rather than lack lustre. I think it has been a hard tour for them diplomatically, but I think they have do a really commendable job.
I guess what I am saying is that before judging, we should consider the culture they have ventured into and as a proud Canadian, I completely understand and I respect the dignity and happiness that they have brought to this tour.

This tour really feels very focused towards politicians and Firs Nations! Quite a hefty tour even though it looks like alot of tourism and kids and fluffy there are alot of heavier things underneath it. I wonder if the royals might be used as a tool by the Canadian government to smooth over with First Nations? I mean, William and Kate were specifically asked for and that I think was because of the PR angle and the current PM is very PR savvy. But I also wonder if it also is because William is going to be queen, and appearantly there is quite a few rumblings among First Nations because they thought things were gonna get better after promises from the new government and it's going slower than they want. I wonder if William and Kate might be acting as a bit of a distraction and an "I see you". I mean, on this event both the blue shirts and the orange shirts worn by alot of the locals were different protests. Not towards the royals, but they used the media focus from the royals for their causes. I feel like this tour is more than meets the eye. Similar to William in China etc.

The blue shirts were to protest a natural gas plant off the coast. The orange shirts are because September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, which has the slogan "Every Child Matters." It was started by Phyllis Webstad who was in a residential school as a child. She had a new orange shirt that she really loved, and upon arrival the children were stripped, given uniforms, and their own homemade, traditional clothing was taken and never given back to them. Phyllis has said she never got her beloved shirt back, so today we wear orange shirts for the girl who didn't get to wear hers. (it goes far beyond the clothing being taken away, of course... the residential schools were horrible places. But I won't go into that here) People wear orange shirts to recognize the harm the schools did to First Nations people, and to show support. I was glad to see quite a few people wearing orange downtown today.
Rebecca, it is a hefty tour as you surmise, and I am sure it has at times been quite uncomfortable for Will and Kate. However all credit to them for showing the utmost interest and respect and warmth wherever they have been. I think a lot of the public choose to underestimate this duo, but W/K seem to remain true to their values, which is quite admirable considering the constant hype and social media negativity around them.

DeleteRebecca, I think you've hit the nail on the head with your first remark. At the moment, it apparently suits both the Canadian and British governments to use William and Kate as pawns. For one thing, Canada is now involved with setting up a trade pact with Australia and New Zealand--maybe all three have signed on already--and adding the UK to the mix would perhaps strengthen the mix. And with Brexit, the UK could use the business.
DeleteFor another thing, government approval for the liquid gas pipeline and natural gas plant on the coast of BC was very conveniently announced the day W&K were set to go to Kelowna. The upshot, for Will and Kate, was that, on the next day, if memory serves, the aboriginal chief due to speak at UBCO didn't go--he cancelled that morning,stating that he had issues with the Crown, meant no offence, but that it was a matter of principle. Too bad a few more politicians didn't have more of that.

Its current editor is somewhat conservative, according to Wikipedia, but I think iMacleans journalism is respected. Kate and William have plunged into a difficult area, and apparently carried it off. DeleteI agree, this tour has had some very meaningful stops for British Columbians (like myself!). It is great to see that Will and Kate recognize the importance that the First Nation's communities have here and take time to meet with the chiefs and observe their traditions. There have been controversies, not over the Royal visit, but the community are using the publicity to peacefully protest. I think having Will and Kate visit brings attention back to these communities that the rest of Canada can turn a blind eye to. (Also no worries about Macleans, it is a very highly respected Canadian magazine). It's been very interesting to watch, you can see that often the Chiefs are being more welcoming to the Royals than to Christy Clark (the premier).
I keep getting the very strong impression that this tour is absolutely purely political in every way and that Will and Kate are pawns in this tug of war between the Trudeau government and the folks on the west coast of Canada. It was likely offered to the Trudeau government as a deal so he'd continue to promote the Commonwealth, in light of the rather major blow from the Brexit vote; Trudeau has had some very public problems with the First Nations and they have been very vocal about their displeasure with what they see as his failure to keep campaign promises made to the First Nations tribes and his failure to address issues of poverty and social services and there are a number of mineral rights/land rights feuds going on between the Canadian government, the First Nations tribes and private developers and/or energy companies.
DeleteWill and Kate completed their first tour of Canada shortly after they were married. While Kate was just getting her feet wet, William was very hands-on in the tour, he flew and landed a helicopter, they both participated in the dragon boat race, they took part in opening the Calgary Stampede and they participated in a number of events when they went to the U.S. We saw the same in Australia and New Zealand and also in India and Bhutan.
This tour has been markedly different. They've not been able to participate in many events, it's been sit and watch, sit and watch, etc. etc., which is definitely not their style at all when on tours like this.
Then there's the issue of the two rather embarrassing political protests involving the royal visitors, that of the refusal of the First Nations chief to attend the Black Rod ceremony and the t-shirt incident today. Sorry but that's absolutely embarrassing to Will and Kate and it places them in an awkward position. The royal family are formally supposed to be above politics and not get involved and actions like today's protests. As the English say, very bad form, in my opinion.
JN, Will and Kate brought dignity. Would that some of their hosts had done the same, instead of putting their royal guests into the middle of some Canadian political feud.

DeleteAbsolutely agree that the Will and Kate have been used by the Canadian governments agenda on this trip and it was made especially clear after the pipeline announcement yesterday. Point I was trying to make is that don't accuse Will and Kate for being boring and no interaction. The political undertones and cultural dynamics have reigned in the spontaneity and I still contend that they have done well. If the monarchy hopefully continues, they will visit the area again,but they will touch other areas that they have not visited first.

DeleteI'm not sure about that Beachgal. It's very possible. But I think it could be her hair. When you do a braid like this you take the hair from underneath and not the topmost hair. My under-hair is usually way darker than my upper after the summer. So it is possible. It's also possible that it is a hairband :)

The more formal bow tie blouse and upscale blazer just seems very out of place. And paired with cowboy boots? This is a huge miss for me!

DeleteThe formal top part was because they were doing some "regular royal buissness" and opening a hospital, so she had to look a bit more formal while still being able to Canoe etc. I think the balance was very nice.

Kate wore the R. Soles Vegas Setter boots at the Calgary Stampede in 2011. Those boots are lighter in photos but bear a striking resemblance to these boots. I'm rather surprised she wore these boots today vs. a flat pair or, as someone mentioned, her Sebago boat shoes. The cowboy boots over skinny jeans look has just never been a favorite with me.

ReplyDeleteHow amazing to travel by traditional war canoe! I've been to Haida Gwaii and it is such a beautiful place. They definitely lucked out with the weather, when I was there it rained or was overcast the whole time.

Yes, this has been mentioned before. Her legs are so shapely and pretty, but seeing every curve is too much...even the zipper is pulling on her amazing flat stomach! Regular jeans would have been better.

DeleteI disagree that this is how pants look these days. You can have fitted pants that aren't glued to your legs. She is very slim, but these pants look uncomfortably tight and are pulling. It is unflattering, even on her. I wear skinny pants all the time. J. Crew for example makes beautiful skinny pants that don't look like this when worn. I love Zara and think it is a classic brand, but there is a reason why these pants are under 50 dollars. They look cheap and wear cheap. J Crew pants are under a hundred dollars, but would look a million times better.

It is a great blazer and a new color is great. I remember reading somewhere that the blazer was renamed for her after it's debut on tour back in 2011.

The dark khaki and red combination was very much a thing in the 1980's. It's definitely making a come back. We have seen that a lot on this tour. Kate is an expert at pulling these looks together, and she always blends in so well with locals. I love it!

The blazer is too matchy with the color of the jeans and the red sweater looked too large and just wrong when paired with the colored jeans and cowboy boots. Misses for me today, but I have for the most part been very impressed with her style choices this tour!

ReplyDeleteThis outfit was not styled well. I love the blazer but a simple beige cashmere sweater would have looked more appropriate for the outing. The matching color pants and cowboy boots are just a terrible look overalll. The outfits this tour are very strange. She looked every bit the princess walking off the plane in the bespoke blue dress but for example the ivory dress at the children's party was a miss as well. She is so beautiful and polished and can look great in anything but I wish she would go back to the styling of her post wedding wardrobe as the designers being chosen are too "runway" rather than princess. Sadly these outfits look like pieces Beatrice and Eugenie would wear.

I think this tour proved it for me, I am not a fan of Kate's everyday/casual style, which is combination of skinnies with a blazer. The best part of this outfit was the otter fur scarf- poor otters.
I really like this look. I think the feminine blouse works great with the blazer, jeans, and boots. I love the way her hair is done. It says something for the comfort and quality of that blazer that she could row in it!
ReplyDeleteMy post from yesterday did not go through. I agree that Charlotte looks like the Queen! Yes, she is outgoing where George is kind of shy. At first I wondered why, as many of us did, Kate would wear a white dress to a children's event, but maybe it's because she can! That is why we read this blog about her and say she is effortlessly chic. How many women could wear a white dress to an outdoor children's party and not get something on it--grass stains, mud, drool from Charlotte's teething! But she does it, and does it elegantly and, apparently, comfortably. That's why she is a Princess and we are but mere mortals :). As for the lack of interaction with other parents and children: I noticed that and it bothered me. However, in news reports, I read quotes from parents who were there about the conversations they had with William and Kate, so at some point there must have been some.
And, yes, this tour is way different than, say, India. No hobnobbing with Bollywood stars, no visit to a fairy tale mountain kingdom, no photo in front of the iconic Taj Mahal. They are in a place the world pays little attention to, giving their time and attention to the people there and doing it generously and graciously. Kudos to W&K for that. And I think Kate has done a great job of choosing clothes that reflect the country she is in, that reflect the Fall season, and that work well for her.
Janet I loved how you put words to my own thoughts about yesterday that I was struggling to express! Thx:) So my additional thoughts were:
Delete1) As a Hostess/Guest of Honor its always nice to error on the side of being dressed up. It tells the guests that you find the event & their presence important enough to do so. Also, seeing other Mums in dresses tells us that this was an important day for them. :)
2) Yes George is at an age to be more aware/hesitant of his surroundings.... But I can't tell you how many times it took all my kids at that age to warm up when I brought them to a new playgroup or outing with new girlfriends & their children & they all hung back until they got the lay of the land. Also with so many distractions it was a wonder any of the children interacted with all of the many fun things to grab their attention. It was definitely more of a "Parrallel Play" situation for any child.
3) I too read of several chats parents had with Will & Kate, who while being fellow parents were also focused on keeping track of & tending to their own little munchkins.
4) I leave with the question... Would we rather see the kids alone with W&K at an old school Photo Call with a Slew of Photographers Snapping away at them like they did with Will & Harry? Or the lovely party yesterday which enabled other Military Families to enjoy all the fun & escape their concerns about their loved ones deployed (even for just a bit) & have Photographers etc there to capture some much craved video & snaps of PG & PC? I love the idea of The Children's Garden Party & appreciate that the world was given a peak in for a bit of it.
I think it was a Great Idea & Wonderful Day all around! :)
I also love that Kate wore a Cream Dress...... "Because She Can" (Thx Janet love it) lol :)

DeleteThey are very comfortable if they are fitted correctly and on top of that they are extremely functional. The heel, especially a walking heel, is a great choice for walking all day or being on your feet. While I am from the Southwest and cowboy boots are very common place and worn daily by many people, they are not just for cowboys or cowgirls. They are quite on trend and aside from being stylish, are quite useful. I see no problem with her wearing them with her outfit, on the contrary think it is a practical choice for being outdoors and in nature (including a canoe/boat). cc
DeleteRebecca-Sweden, you are right. Cowboy boots are very, very comfortable. My BF wears them all the time and one day brought a pair home for me. I wore them to make him happy but I have to admit that they are much more comfortable than my Valentino Rockstud Pumps!

ReplyDeleteI don't know why people on this site keep insisting on Kate wearing "trousers" when that mean old-fashioned ugly pants. Stylish, trendy, modern trousers are skinny cut. That's the way it is. Flare or bootcut trousers are incredibly dated.

DeleteA blazer is a navy/military/boat basic. That is where the concept of a blazer came from. Cowboys boots with an outfit like Kate wore is classic. Ralph Lauren classic. Red and khaki and red and the color of breen (brownish green) that Kate wore is classic. Again, Ralph Lauren classic. Very preppy, but in the best way. I love this outfit.
Janet, the ABC video here shows them interacting normally. They fit easily into the flow of things there.
DeleteI love all the elements of her outfit(s) today. But I don't love the blazer and the pants together. The color is too close but not completely matching. The sweater does not bother me at all. It kind of makes sense, fishing in a blazer doesn't seem like an ideal choice.

Kate looks splendid! What a great way of dressing to honor her hosts while traveling by boat. And more green, yea! Only, the blazer has that notch, my one disappointment.
ReplyDeleteI am a bit concerned for those who think the red pullover is too large. We have been reconditioned to expect overly tight clothing. The sweater is beautiful and it's a fine fit for fishing! I am altogether amazed by all of the criticism of Kate's attire today. I find it lovely, engaging, appropriate, practical, and elegant.
Does 'raven's tail' refer to the weave of the scarf? The fur is sea otter, according to the Daily Mail article. The DM could have made an effort to identify the Haida people around William and Catherine. And Kate, who they say asked to handle the fish, did not look the least queasy or green! Such nonsense.
Kate and William really lucked out with the weather in Haida Gwai! Beautiful images, beautiful place. Kate looks smoking in the khaki Smythe jacket and skinnies; and the blouse just perfect. Loving the chocolate cowboy boots - the 2016/17 runways have been full of cowboy boots of all styles and colours, so again, she's en vogue. Besides, they look great on her. Red and khaki a no-no Anon 02:49? Since when? I think it's the combination is stunning and wear it often. Another win day.

DeleteKate looked adorable today! Everything she had on was completely appropriate. Plus its the Great North West. ANYTHING GOES. The point is to stay warm and comfortable. I do wear boots fishing and I have worn them on a boat too.

I don't think her outfits for today could have been any more perfect. Total home run. The color combinations are very Ivy League and posh. The boots are so unique and very classy.
ReplyDeleteI think red looks nice with khaki! However I wouldn't describe Kates pants as khaki. They look more brown to me. Khaki is tan or beige. Agree the boots are totally off for canoeing. The jeans and blazer are fine but that flimsy blouse is out of place too. A crew neck long sleeve t shirt would have been better. Love her hair today.

ReplyDeleteWhile I didn't exactly love the sweater, I did think that the red and khaki were a perfect match! And I would also rather style it with brown than black boots. Love the new blouse and blazer, and the braided hairband looked fresh and young. Generally, I'm more for the more dressed up looks and don't care so much about functional outerwear, but Kate can pull really anything off! ;)

I agree as well. People who know nothing about British or Canadian cultural heritage are suddenly experts at what Kate should or shouldn't wear. They ignore the wonder of a traditional children's tea party and snipe at dress and so-called "lack of interaction"--they have obviously never been at a toddler's birthday party where the little ones are far more interested in presents and games than each other. They think that the Duchess should have worn anything else than what she did. And finally they call her "dense" because obviously she didn't see the psychology of her 3 year old even though he enjoyed himself and didn't throw a tantrum. Get a life peeps. This is a happy family that have expended time and energy to visit a country and people that have largely been ignored. And they have done it with warmth and grace forging new Royal traditions.

But the thing that interests me most is the way that the scarves tone with the outfits - green for Kate and blue for William. Either the hosts asked in advance which colours would be appropriate, or the palace was told what gifts to expect and planned the outfits round them - I wonder which?

I just realized that when Kate wears "regular" clothes my reaction is "meh". It's when she wears things that I will never, ever have occasion to wear that I get excited. The blue arrival outfit was so fabulous. Even if I looked like Kate I would never have occasion to wear something like that. Seeing her clothes on such occasions feeds the dream of the happily-ever-after princess story. Every day clothes- not so much. Even though I'm in my mid 50'September I enjoy the happily ever after dream.

When I was eight, my father drove us from Utah, up through BC to the Yukon and then to Alaska. I wish I could remember more of the trip, but I remember how breathtaking it was.
