Kate in Royally Fabulous Erdem for V&A Photography Centre Opening!

The Duchess of Cambridge made her first visit as Royal Patron of the Victoria & Albert to open the museum's new Photography Centre tonight.

The Duchess arrived to a sea of flash bulbs.

In March, Kate became the first Royal Patron of the V&A. The Palace said "The patronage reflects Her Royal Highness’s continued personal interest in the visual arts, photography and design." Director Tristram Hunt said: "The Duchess’s personal interest in photography, textiles and the visual arts, alongside her support for the role of art in supporting mental health and nurturing young people’s creative talent, fits naturally with the collections and civic purpose of the V&A." The visit follows the Cambridges appearance at the Global Ministerial Summit yesterday, where William described Kate as "My wife, the arty one".

Kate was welcomed by Mr Hunt tonight.

The museum is steeped in royal history. It was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1857. Over four decades later, the laying of the foundation stone of the Aston Webb building (to the left of the main entrance) on 17 May 1899 marked the last official public appearance by the monarch. It was during this ceremony that a change of name from the South Kensington Museum to the Victoria and Albert Museum was made public. Queen Victoria's address during the ceremony, as recorded in the London Gazette, ended: "I trust that it will remain for ages a Monument of discerning Liberality and a Source of Refinement and Progress."

Today, the V&A is the world’s leading museum of art, design, education and performance with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity. It was established to make works of art available to all and to inspire British designers and manufacturers. The V&A’s collection spans more than 5000 years of human creativity, showcasing work in virtually every medium and from many parts of the world.

The Duchess met curators who have worked on the project for some time.

Kate toured the opening display at the Photography Centre entitled Collecting Photography: From Daguerreotype to Digital. The display explores photography from the medium’s invention in the 19th century to the present day. Drawn from the V&A’s collection of over 800,000 photographs, the display showcases contemporary photography alongside seminal prints by pioneers William Henry Fox Talbot and Roger Fenton.

Kate looked in the stereoscopic viewer which showed photographs taken by a mother in the 1850s, depicting her children in an array of settings. The Duchess noted "It brought images like that to life" for visitors to the centre.

The Mail reports:

'Kate revealed this evening that her eldest child, Prince George, is liable to blaming his pencils rather than his drawing ability. Shown a pencil drawing by William Henry Fox Talbot she was told the camera inventor blamed his lack of ability in drawing on the pencil, which inspired him to invent photography.
He wanted nature to draw its own picture on the paper instead of failing with the pencil, Martin Barnes, senior curator of photographs at the V&A, explained.'She said "George would do that!" — that is blame the pencil, which was sweet,' he said afterwards. The conversation came as Barnes showed Kate the humble little wooden box with a simple lens was made by Fox Talbot in 1835.'

The history of the photography collection in the V&A is closely connected with the development of the Museum as a whole. Its first director, Henry Cole, was an amateur photographer himself and a great supporter of the art of photography. He began a photography collection in 1856.

The new Photography Centre will more than double the space dedicated to photography where prints, negatives, camera equipment, photographic publications and original documents will be displayed together to tell a broader story of international photography. A frequently changing selection of new acquisitions, a ‘Light Wall’ for displaying the most cutting-edge photographic imagery, and a ‘Dark Tent’ projection area complete the new space.

Introducing the photography collection.

Bespoke case showcasing the Linda McCartney Photography Collection.

One of the most important and innovative photographers of the 19th century, Julia Margaret Cameron had close links to the V&A throughout her career. Best known for her powerful portraits, Cameron's photographs were highly innovative: intentionally out-of-focus and often including scratches, smudges and other traces of her process. In her lifetime, Cameron was criticised for her unconventional techniques, but also appreciated for the beauty of her compositions and her conviction that photography was an art form. Her works feature in the centre.

Thomas Ruff, known for taking a critical and conceptual approach to photography, created a new series for the photography centre, inspired by Linnaeus Tripe’s 1850s negatives of India and Burma from the V&A collection.

The Mail writes: "Tristram Hunt said of Kate's visit: 'She had an early sneak preview of the coronet and was very interested discussing the history of it and the design by Albert. We also showed her the Beyoncé papillon ring — a butterfly whose wings flap  which was a very generous gift by Beyoncé. She was suitably impressed. 'But she didn't get to touch it — or try it on. 'It was hidden behind glass,'  Mr. Hunt smiled. Kate was taken back to her college days of when she studied Lewis Carroll. 'She talked about her undergraduate dissertation on photography so we looked at some of the Alice photographs,' he says. 'She was very knowledgable about the history of photography and interested in the galleries. We were delighted to host her. One of our curators had done a doctorate on the same lines and they had a very scholarly conversation . She said she worked incredibly hard on it."

Before departing, Kate unveiled a plaque.

The photography centre is a wonderful addition to the V&A. Admission to the museum is free.

A video from the event.

When news Kate was wearing Erdem broke on Twitter, there was air of trepidation, shall we say. The last number of the designer's looks the Duchess has worn have been decidedly misses, but when photos by the talented James Whatling began to come in, it was clear the designer had redeemed himself. Kate arrived looking stylish in the Iman Off The Shoulder Boucle Tweed Dress. The dress features elements the Duchess has favoured for some time: the midi length, the off-the-shoulder style. This felt very fresh and different, however. Indeed, the Spring 2018 Collection it comes from was inspired by none other than Her Majesty herself: "After discovering that Queen Elizabeth II was a fan of jazz, Erdem Moralıoğlu designed his Spring '18 collection around what the Queen might have worn to Harlem's Cotton Club." The burgundy in the dress was complemented by the addition of the belt and matching shoes. This Erdem works beautifully for Kate; the entire look has a very autumnal feel to it.

The £1,395 dress is described: "This Italian-made dress is cut from lightly frayed bouclé-tweed and encrusted with crystal and faux pearl embellishments. The layered off-the-shoulder neckline sweeps across the décolletage, while the fluted hem gently ripples as you walk."

A closer look at the buttons and shoulder detail.

Kate's dress is sold out. The Iman style is available in several sizes in floral print at Neiman Marcus.

A closer look at the belt.

Kate's earrings are also Erdem (with thanks to Alexandra).

The $1,220 Floral earrings are described: "Elegant, refined, and feminine, these Floral earrings by Erdem illustrate the designer’s attraction to romanticism. This accessory is defined by the layering of numerous mother-of-pearl beads with orange, black, and gray crystals." The style (with a different centre stone to Kate's) is available at 24 Sevres.

Japanese Ginger identified Kate's clutch as the Jimmy Choo J Box in Bordeaux Velvet.

And Kate's custom burgundy pumps are also Jimmy Choo.

***********

We have several other updates to share with you today. Firstly, Hello! reports Kate visited an art fair in Battersea Park last week:

Kate, whose son Prince George goes to school in the area, was spotted at The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair on Friday afternoon. She enjoyed a spot of shopping and browsing just after 2pm, most likely before collecting her son George who was a five-minute drive away.
"Kate was very casual, wearing blue jeans and a pink shirt. She had on a pair of white trainers," a source told HELLO! "She was very, very pretty. She appeared to be on her own with no obvious security in sight. She was walking along the aisle with someone who looked as if he was explaining something to her, perhaps a dealer or a member of the exhibition staff."

Buckingham Palace released the programme for the upcoming Dutch State visit (23-24 October). There was an expectation we would see the Cambridges involved in the visit, but there was no official word confirming any royal participation until this week. The couple are not involved in engagements over the two-day visit, which includes Westminster Abbey, Pop Brixton, a UK-Netherlands Innovation Showcase and a trip to HMS Belfast. I do think, however, that there's a very strong chance we will see William and Kate at the private luncheon and/or the State banquet on Tuesday, 23 October. Attendance for both of these events is not confirmed in advance. Kate made her first solo visit abroad to the Netherlands in 2016, where she was warmly greeted by King Willem-Alexander, it would seem fitting for the Cambridges to be involved in some capacity.

Last but not least, Princess Eugenie will marry her longtime love Jack Brooksbank at St George's Chapel, Windsor on Friday morning at 11 am. The Palace has confirmed Prince George and Princess Charlotte will serve as Page Boy and Bridesmaid for the day. The pair will join a very royal bridal party.

Best Man
Jack Brooksbank has asked his brother, Thomas Brooksbank, to be his Best Man at his wedding to Princess Eugenie.

Maid of Honour

Miss Maud Windsor (aged 5 - goddaughter of Princess Eugenie, daughter of Lady Frederick Windsor and Lord Frederick Windsor)
Miss Theodora Williams (aged 6 – daughter of Ms Ayda Field and Mr Robbie Williams)

Page Boys
HRH Prince George of Cambridge (aged 5)
Mr Louis de Givenchy (aged 6 – son of Mrs Zoe De Givenchy and Mr Olivier De Givenchy)

Special Attendants

How can you watch the wedding? The wedding will be Live Streamed for those around the world to watch on The Duke of York's YouTube Channel and The Royal Family YouTube Channel from 10am. Viewers on Facebook will also be able to watch the live stream on The Royal Family and The Duke of York's pages. On Twitter, followers can watch the stream on the Royal Family and Duke of York Live Twitter pages.

For televised coverage, The Telegraph reports:

  • ITV has placed the coverage of the historic event in the hands of the widely respected team of This Morning, hosted by Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford. Coverage begins at 9.25 am.
  • They will broadcast live from Windsor, showing events unfolding inside and outside the grounds of Windsor Castle, as well as giving their comment and reaction.
  • The BBC will show highlight clips later that day, after it decided against live coverage of the wedding despite the reported request of Eugenie's father, the Duke of York.
  • ITV will broadcast a 30-minute highlights programme, The Royal Wedding: A Family Celebration, at 8pm the evening following the ceremony.
  • On the other side of the world, Channel 7 will provide exclusive access to ITV's live stream for Australians from 20:00 Sydney time, whilst networks in New Zealand have yet to advertise their plans.
  • For those in the US, Harper's Bazaar confirms: "TLC announced Thursday it would be the exclusive network to air Princess Eugenie’s wedding. Their broadcast, called Royal Wedding Live: Princess Eugenie, will begin at 4:25 a.m. EST on Friday, October 12, and the cable network will air an encore of the broadcast starting at 7:25 a.m. ET. (The West Coast will be on a standard three-hour tape delay, a rep confirms.)"

I will post a Live Stream on the blog before the wedding begins on Friday morning. See you then :)

Wow! I love this dress! 😃 Rather unusual for Kate but she looks great in it! It's the kind of dress I'd love to buy if I could 😉

    1. Agreed! IMO a typically-awkward Erdem silhouette. Frumpy hemline, fabric all wrong for a bias-cut skirt...and for me the velvet shoes and boho earrings are also misses. A strange look, or er..."interesting"!

    2. I'm with you, Penny. It looks like something a fashionista scarecrow would wear. Also, I think she should have found some gorgeous amethysts from The Vault instead of these cheap looking earrings. However, I do think the neckline is beautiful, the tailoring impeccable and it does move in a lovely way. The Photography Center looks fabulous though.

    3. I agree as well, this dress is a total miss for me also. Good for Kate, she could carry off this dress with confidence. XOXO

    4. Total agreement, sadly. I really want her to get edgy but do it right. The buttons are awful. It's too tight. I think it's supposed to be bohemian but it is reworked into duchess at an art gallery. The belt? Is it just a piece of ribbon? I hate to rip on the look but it's not my favorite. The earrings are even awful. But Kate is beautiful!!!!!

    5. A fashionista scarecrow? Nothing about this lively, young women or his beautiful choice even begins to define that!!

    6. Have to agree. I like the pattern with the cut of the top and the burgundy shoes and clutch. And these are all the positive things I can say about this look.

    7. Agree with everyone. This dress is a huge miss, especially with this "belt" which looks more like a ribbon to me. Also, it sits in a weird way on her waist. The whole outfit is too much: the shoulders, the buttons, the flair at the bottom. And then she goes and adds a RIBBON. :) But the colour of the shoes are very beautiful.

I agree. There is alot of details and alot of things that are "messy" by default (different buttons, frayed edges) but they are deployed so well in this piece that it just comes of as a very well designed outfit! Love it!

  19. It 's the kind of dress who ones hate and others love. I adore this sophisticated tailoring and classic fabric.

  20. Gorgeous! Love love love the mismatched buttons, and the matching belt/shoes. Beautifully unique and different fall look. I love it when she takes a fashion risk. Her hair is once again looking great. I envy this full hair. I'm 10 months postpartum and my hair is full of all those little baby hairs that are growing out after the initial postpartum hair loss. Definitely not looking as full and lush as Kate's.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Stunning and perhaps the best Erdem yet.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love that this is different.... a little outside of the box. I'm not sure I like the bottom, but I do like the upper part. Overall it's a little busy -..typical Erdem, but I do generally like it. She has fun with her style, I have to give her credit for that. Pretty much nothing is ever boring. And everything perfectly tailored, so she looks great no matter what she's wearing.

  23. Love it even the velvet maroon shoes but not sure those earrings go well with the dress, would have liked one of her Kiki pairs

  25. Kate’s hair and makeup are beautiful, and I love her earrings and shoes. Are they velvet? I’m sure the Erdem dress is going to garner a lot of comments in both directions, because there’s a lot going on here. However, I think it moves beautifully in the videos online, and the neckline is very flattering on her.

  26. I agree it's unusual but so elegant anyway! And she managed to match the colors...burgundy belt and shoes with her cheeks color! :)

*SIGH* I love this look! The neckline reminds me of the dress Kate wore when she did her first (?) solo engagement (at the Portrait Gallery maybe...I can't remember the location). It really suits her! I love the way the dress fits (her body is incredible!) and the way that the skirt moves when she walks; the tailoring is impeccable. The mismatched buttons and brooch really work well here and the pop of color from the shoes and sash...I love it. I think this dress was a risky choice, and it paid off! I don't always swoon over Erdem but this one? This one is a hit! I'm looking forward to reading what everyone else thinks.

I agree. On twitter it's speculated that hers is the runway version (which has a longer length), hence the tie at the waist.

    2. Rebecca do you mean because you think it has an opening at the waist? I wondered about that but I have to believe she is wearing a finished dress without a cutout that was customized in terms of length for her. When I look closely at the belt I can see the fringe and checked fabric down the front running underneath. At least that is how it looks to me:). Or they reworked the waist for her, as the waist on her dress does not look like the print ad.

First, I just need to express my joy at no sighting of the nude or praline shoes. These aubergine (or are they burgundy?) heels are gorgeous.

As an aside I also notice Catherine Quinn at her engagements and she always looks so stylish! You can catch a glimpse of her outfit in the arrival video. Is Natasha already on maternity leave? Maybe Catherine can double up on Private Secretary duties and act as style advisor too.

  65. Please forgive me Charlotte, but since you do not have a page devoted to Princess Eugenie, I am hoping you would not mind my posting a snippet about the upcoming royal wedd8ng here. KP just released a list of attendants, so since George and Caharlotte are attends, there is a link to Duchess Kate’s page. Beyond William and Kate’s children, the list of royal attendants is quite spectacular. Traditionally, weddings have always been about the bride and the bride’s family, and since Princess Eugenie is the first officially titled royal princess in the UK to marry, since Princess Anne, this is quite an awesome event. I hope that Princess Eugenie goes full on princess in terms of her gown and styling - wouldn’t it be lovely if she wears something borrowed from her Granny? It is such a show of love and family support that she has chosen so many of her cousins, the Queens grand and great-grandchildren to attend her - what a glorious day this will be for the royal family!

How wonderful of Eugenie to have included so many family. Cannot wait to see all those darling bridesmaids, and very excited to see Eugenie's gown, she will be a beautiful bride. What a lovely family affair to be shared and remembered!! cc

Unknown, I think its actually just Eugenie having Her young cousins in the wedding (tradition), not including them as the queens grandchildren or great grandchildren, they just happen to be both.

I for one am hoping for a sighting of the York tiara and I'm sure she will be a beautiful bride, she is my favorite Windsor princesses!

  67. P.S. Love the mismatched buttons on the dress. However, do not care for the matching earrings. She possesses some absolutely stunning earrings that are real. It is not necessary to wear faux simply because a designer shows jewelry with a specific collection. I don't think its necessary to always play it safe in fashion to be classic.

I have to say I have liked the Erdem stuff alot (I know, don't mock me, I think I've got accustomed to here it here in the UK for a long while now) but this is something a little different and has that artsy edge so synced with this engagment.

    3. Exactement! I love the Erdem stuff Catherine has worn. I thought at first this frock might be Vivienne Westwood or vintage McQueen because of the edgy urban Edwardian look and was surprised it was Erdem. An amazing choice for this engagement. The rumour is that he is Eugenie's wedding gown designer.

    4. Urban Edwardian sums up the look nicely, Mel. Someone else suggested steam punk/ Tim Burton esque which I thought decribed it perfectly as well.

  78. I absolutely love this whole look!! The other Erdem pieces the Duchess has worn were a definite no for me. I can totally see Kate rewearing this for the Christmas season with the RF. IMO, not frumpy. Still very much on trend with the midi aka tea length skirts.

  79. I really like the modifications and length Kate used for this dress. Her version is better than any of the others particularly that horrid floral print.

I'm not a fan of the earrings. I would think they were fun if they cheaper but definitely not £290 for no precious stone, gold, silver or even semi-precious stones.

Thanks for all the pictures and coverage. Much better than the useless coverage on KP social media which barely has any pictures or information.

  82. She looks amazing tonight. Erdem and Emilia Wickstead are two of the best of her go-to designers. The issue with Catherine is that she often duplicates silhouettes, material, hair styling, accessories, etc. Erdem pieces, while sometimes "out-there", introduces some texture and interest in her monotonous wardrobe.

    1. I loved that gown too! My opinion is that at these kinds of "arty" events Catherine wears what "she" likes as to the more simplified style she has adopted for daytime/royal outings. I pretty much always love her choices, she is my style maven to be sure.
The earrings are magnificent too and she is definitely killing it with this ensemble!

  86. The Duchess stunned from head to toe. She is just the epitome of style, elegance and class. Love her. I love that from the start she knew what she liked style-wise and stuck to it.

  87. I think I've been there and done this - seems to me I had a similar dress in the 80s. I did guess that Kate would wear black and white to a photography exhibit. The dress is well fitted and moves well, and the touches of burgundy are lovely and make it come alive. What would I change if I were styling this look? I think I would remove the doodads on the neckline. They are a bit of clutter that detracts from the draping; the different buttons are enough design interest. I haven't decided about the earrings, though I like their design as seen by themselves. Kate looks very happy and interested. I like the mention of her having a scholarly discussion about Lewis Carroll. Her appearance surprised me, but her enthusiasm is completely captivating.

I think it’s the neckline that throws me off. If it were more straight lines at the top and more simple (without the broach looking area towards the shoulder) i think it’d be more of a hit for me. There just seems to be too much going on with this dress to have that kind of shoulder and neck line. She looks stunning but the neckline is what I’m not fond of.

  91. I have loved every Erdem dress Kate has ever worn, this one included. I think it’s when she wants to experiment and go outside a fashion comfort zone. More power to her! Her day or day is quite simple so this gives her the chance to go a little wild! Also keeps US on our toes!

I want to know how Kate regains her pre-birth body like that, EVERY time. 3 babies and not a visible change. Her tummy is ultra flat and her waist and hips are so slim. I really don't get it. She looks healthy, not sickly skinny, so I gather she must eat. Any ideas?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I must admit I have wondered the same thing. After three kids my body had changed shape a bit--wider hips, softer tummy even with exercise, etc. She must have very good genes and a lot of self-discipline. I am in awe :)

      Delete
    2. I think the key is that she is fit and tone *before* she gets pregnant and, most likely, continues to do Pilates (my guess) throughout the pregnancy. And based on recent photos, I predict that it will be the same with Pippa.

      Delete
    3. I want to know her secret, too! :)

    4. How funny I was expecting someone to suggest that she might be pregnant again because of the tummy :) no chance for that, of course, the stomach area is just accentuated by the belt.
I think some women have simply good genes, combine that with Kates extremely healthy lifestyle.
However i also want to note that most women do not look largely different after having babies, especially a good 6 months after giving birth. It always seems to me that people have this picture of women becoming unshaped after having kids - not true for the majority of mums that I know at least.

RW, it's just the body type IMO. I'm like her (haha, how boastful that sounds 😀), I have three sons and I went back to both my weight and figure very fast after each one without really trying. In fact, after the 1st one I got so skinny that I looked ill! I know some ladies have difficulties losing the extra weight but I suppose it's related to the type of metabolism and also to genes... I'm also tall and with a tendency to stoop. So, I'm not saying Kate doesn't eat healthily or something but it's really not her *fault* she gets back to her shape so easily 😃

      Delete
    7. I wish I knew too! I wonder what dress size she is, any ideas?

      Delete
    8. I also have 3 kids, and was back quickly at my initial size. Despite gaining 20kg with each pregnancy. I am naturally skinny and very tall (too tall...), i guess its mostly "good" genes. I didnt exercise since I left school :) I understand that for some it must be hard work, however very often there is no magic behind regaining the figure again. Just genes, active lifestyle (-> baby) and sometimes a bit of time. Tidefi

      Delete
    9. Yes, good Gene's but also seems to lead a very active lifestyle where exercise & activity are central- not food. I also list all baby weight without trying because of breastfeeding. It burns an extraordinary amount of calories. I was eating as much as my husband who is 100 lbs. more than me at meals! But also didn't snack between meals because I was home by myself so it was either sleep or eat so my exhaustion won over snacking & I napped when baby did.

All in all, she looks healthy & so happy. It seems she gains confidence & comfort in front of cameras more with each child. It might just be that she has so much else to care about that she just doesn't care what others think, just doing the best she can.

I agree with royal fan, she was fit before she was pregnant and was taking care while she was pregnant to keep fit, that has a big part to do with it.

Thank you ladies, great responses! I personally bounced back quickly with my first, but found it harder the second time around due to being busy with two babies at different ages. Breast feeding is amazing, and eating leftover veggies rather than crackers is a given!! Finding time for the gym became tricky for me however. Both of them never slept at the same time, nether did my older child want to sit in the pram for very long.. Life happened.. and whilst I am still healthy, I am not as skinny as I was in the early days. Oh well. Kate has a nanny and access to top class facilities for Pilates, dietary help as needed and the perfect genes for staying slim. Carol is looking amazing and I do believe all the Middleton women go out of their way to remain the size they are. So to summarise: 1. Pilates/exercise 2. Healthy food with a potential focus on protein rich diets perhaps, and 3. Breastfeeding, and 4. Access and time to undertake 1,2,3,4, and then do not forget 5. Good genes! The fact that Kate looks so radiant and healthy is the most important factor and it makes me happy!

  98. I am in the dislike column on this one! I love the tweed and velvet accessories, but hate the frayed trim and mismatched buttons, and the decoration at the shoulder. I also agree with other posters that real gem earrings would have elevated this look. I haven't liked Erdem since Kate's first trip to Canada. But you can see with everyone's posts, we certainly all have different tastes!

    1. I'm with you on the mismatched buttons Heather! I love the checked tweed, the length and the movement of the skirt, the off-the-shoulder neckline and the black decorations on it; I don't mind the frayed edges and I love the touches of burgundy, but all of that is more than enough detail for me. It doesn't need mismatched buttons as well - they tip it over into the "Oh no, he didn't know when to stop" category for me (happens quite a bit with Erdem pieces!). Having said that, I still think it's the best piece of Erdem she's worn since the black and white one at the fashion display with Sophie when she was expecting Prince Louis.

    2. Heather, I find it incredibly funny that both of our posts ended up right next to each other given we both used "I am in the [blank] column." Makes sense that we all certainly have different tastes. I don't suppose should 20 of us meet up that we'd all have on the same dress. I probably wouldn't wear the Erdem but I thought it looked spectacular on Kate.

  99. I am definitely in the "love" column. Sorry some of you dislike it. This borders on Avant Garde for me. It's a suiting fabric and has be designed to work in a very bohemian, carefree, style. It's the crystal embellishments where there the collar dips down and the individual sparkling buttons that add to the design. Not sure if the belt works completely, I didn't found a photo from the back but it appears to zip down the back to perhaps the grosgrain ribbon is stitched on and meets in the back? A belt might have been better.

Love the velvet shows and the beautiful clutch. Sure she could wear earrings from the "the vault" but she probably just increased the economy wearing the Erdem ones. Wouldn't surprise me if they were loaned.

I love this length. And this ensemble reminds me of the ivory off-the-shoulder dress she wore to a summer event. She wore those inexpensive "peachy" sandal heels. Remember? I loved that as well - so no surprise I'm enjoying this look.

    PS: her hair is fabulous.
