The Duchess in Beulah London for Mental Health Minute Message

To mark Mental Health Awareness week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined several well-known faces, including David Tennant, Anthony Joshua, Dua Lipa and England football captain Harry Kane, for a special message broadcast simultaneously across all UK radio stations. William said: "We’re all connected, and sometimes just talking about how you're feeling can make a big difference. So right now, let's join together across the UK and reach out to someone."

The Duchess added: "If you’re struggling, it’s important to talk about it. Or if someone you know is acting differently, it’s OK to ask how they are, use this moment to send a message."

Mental Health Minute was produced by Heads Together and is one of a number of legacy projects and efforts currently active. Actor David Tennant aptly summed up the coming challenge: "We all need each other more than ever and in the weeks and months ahead of us, we will all have an important role to play in being there for one another."

This year's theme is kindness.

To mark the week, stories of kindness in the most difficult and challenging times have been shared.

The Mental Health Foundation shared Suba's story, a junior doctor on the front lines in the NHS:

'I’m Suba, a junior doctor currently working in the Emergency Department. I have worked in the NHS for almost 4 years. There are many challenges that I expected to face when becoming a doctor, but the most difficult things have often been the ones I didn’t anticipate:
Feeling like a stranger at work because no one knows your name.
Constantly rotating between departments and coming on and off on call shifts, nights, and weekends.
Tired and frustrated colleagues, patients or their relatives being snappy with you.
Feeling helpless when faced with patients with social issues that you don’t know how to help.
Barely having time for your loved ones or hobbies between work, studying for exams and preparing for interviews.
It has been a very challenging time as anticipated, but the one thing I didn’t anticipate was the immeasurable acts of kindness and gratitude that I have experienced. These have been a saving grace. The cumulative effect of these acts of kindness has kept my jug filled so I can keep doing my job:
Local people sewing scrubs, laundry bags and ear protectors for staff.
Car park companies allowing staff to park for free in hospital car parks.
Councils allowing hospital staff to park freely on surrounding roads.
Airline companies running lounges in hospitals for staff, serving hot drinks.
Local catering companies and restaurants donating free food regularly.
The loud and enthusiastic weekly claps from neighbours.
Supermarkets allowing staff to have designated times and priority when shopping.
There is a clear shift even in the culture at work with different specialties working together and staff working more flexibly than ever. Appreciation is widely shared between colleagues; we receive regular messages of encouragement from senior management and I have never had so many patients tell me how grateful and proud they are of me.'

The Duchess wore Beulah London's Calla Rose Red Floral Dress for the recording (with thanks to Katie's Royal Love).

The £550 dress is described: "The Calla Rose Red Floral Shirt Dress evokes a classic mood. It’s crafted from silk crepe de chine and trimmed with a contrasting white cotton broderie lace collar and cuffed balloon sleeves. Note the concealed placket - a contemporary touch - and A-line skirt. Team with ballet flats for an effortless display." The dress is available at Matches Fashion and on the Beulah London website. 10% of profits from each sale are donated to empowering women all over the world.

The dress is a very nice choice and one I could have seen Kate wearing for the Chelsea Flower Show. There will be virtual activities in place of this year's flower show, and I expect we may see something from the Duchess.

  1. Worthy case! Wow, what a busy dress! Sure not my cup of tea and I am not sure I like it on our favourite Duchesse.

  2. Kate is a pro at dressing for the part for the engagement. I don't know if I would like the dress as a whole, but the part that shows in the video is absolutely perfect. She looks like a lovely, calming flower in the middle of all those faces. It's exactly what I'd want to look at when I was in need of soothing or calming. I personally have taken a lot of pleasure in looking at flowers during this time period. I've joined a Perennials of the Pandemic group on Facebook and looking at everyone's lovely garden pictures gives me great pleasure and hope while I'm stuck indoors. Kate's wearing that type of garden. It's just perfect.

What a lovely comment, Mellie, thank you! 🙂 I also find comfort and joy in flowers. Just this morning, I've been to a gardening centre near my home (the lockdown measures being eased now) and bought several small joys for our balcony. Kate's passion for gardening is well known so I suppose flowers help her too - whether she plants them or wears them! :)

    2. I agree completely. it’s a bit too much on the whole, but just the top part is lovely and perfect for the occasion. The white collar makes her stand out in just the perfect way.

  3. I am glad she is doing this. Mental illness still in the 21st Century, there is a stigma attached to it. With this Covid 19 Pandemic the isolation must be torture for people with Depression. Hope everyone who needs help get's it and please ask for it.

  4. Another great event. The dress is very Kate and agree it would have made a great flower show dress. I am too petite to be able to wear that style but she looks great in it. I would prefer she not button everything up so high, even though that has been a constant look of hers for years. As she gets older I do not think it work as well at least with the severe white color and shape of the collar, some of her other
buttoned up shirts and dresses work better.

Love this. It's so important. I'm a homebody by nature and even I am getting depressed feeling like when I go to bed, the next day will be just like the last, and the last before that and so on. I can't imagine what it is like for people who are social butterflies. I tell my mom it would be like if someone made me go to a party every night: I couldn't do it! So this is important.

    Kate's dress: a rose...isn't that fitting?

On a somber note (since I am already there) I am pretty bummed that there is no Chelsea Flower Show this year :(

It's one of my very favorite traditions and I look forward to it every year.

    1. I always thought it would be so great to work from home, but I am tiring of staying at home and no place to go at night. I loved the message of this mental health minute and the kindness theme. I really like Kate's dress from top to bottom. It reminds me of the navy blue with white polka dotted dress she wore in the family picture with Charles and Camilla while holding Louis. I went to this website recently and thought I would like to buy this dress if I had the funds.

    2. You make a good point Tammy, the burden of how long this will go on has to weigh on everybody, can only imagine how it affects those who can't find coping mechanisms. We all need to take a 'mental health minute' so you are right, this is important.

This year the RHS has a virtual tour of the show that you can see at rhs.org.uk/virtualchelsea. Also on Instagram @the_rhs they are posting quite a bit about the flowers and some of the people behind the scenes. Seems Kensington Royal has posted a throw back picture of Kate planting last year for her Back To Nature garden; its a great picture and seems she really was hands on. Gardening and garden watching is a great tradition, and for me its one of my 'mental health moments'. cc

  6. Good to see Kate and William staying in touch with the public during this time. They are showing concern for mental and physical illnesses and giving hope to those who may otherwise give up. Kate looks lovely in this color, wish we could see the whole dress, perhaps at a later date. Thank you Charlotte for this post, I still check in daily.

  7. If Mental health was ever a concern, it is now. So many have fears and worry of what is going happen. Those alone, those who have go through loss alone. The Duke and Duchess are just amazing right now. Some might say it's only a zoom chat but it's so much more. It is letting people know that they are not alone and there is help available. We'll done to both on their work. If ye haven't seen the Duke on the BBC mental health show, check it out. Thanks Charlotte for the blog and lovely update on the Duchess.

  8. Hi Charlotte, I'm just making this a test post. I've been posting but only realized & looked back & found that known of my posts have gone through since your Wedding Anniversary Post. I hope this works.

So great seeing W&K so often & so involved! I feel they are doing such an absolutely brilliant job during this time!

  9. Wow. That is a busy dress! I like the color but the pattern is a lot.

I love that we are seeing so many video calls. I suspect some of this is just their normal, not out at an engagement type work but now we get to save some inside peeks at it.

Mental health is so vital and especially with everything happening now. I am hoping someone does something directed at youth(10’ish-18’ish). They are old enough to understand the gravity of the situation but also still young enough to be terrified and missing the coping skills that come with growing up.

  10. The topic to which Kate speaks is always important but especially now as we in major Metropolitan cities of the North Eastern area of the USA begin our ninth week of togetherness. But, with that said I turn my comment to Kate and her fashion statement. I am not a fan of her dress today. I just don't understand her style at her age. Actually, I think her lack of style in a choice like this dress. I do not personally know one person her age able to cary off the look choosing to do so. It must be a British thing. With that said I am absolutely LOVING her makeup and hair game. She is looking so youthful without all the extra makeup foundation and eye accentuations. Her hair is looking soft and natural. Time to let the hairdresser move on except for black tie events .

    1. If you check the most popular brands for 30-40 year old women in Europe they’re full of dresses similar to the dresses Kate has been wearing lately.

  11. I’d love to see one of the children burst into the room because that seems to happen on the Zoom calls I have been on. I feel like Kate is a lot more relaxed in these video conferences. This would have really stood out at the flower show. I wish they would change up their location so we could get a sliver of a look at their home.

    Hope from USA

    1. I suppose the choice of a non-interesting door as the background is done on purpose, but with the amount of video conferencing they are doing I do wish they would put a little more effort in the background. And also get a few books to lift the computer so that the camera angle is head-on and not from below.

The Dutch royals have these cool stands to get a good angle and the Spanish royals have set up a whole videoconferencing room. Even Charles and Camilla’s bookcases are better. I am sure the Cambridges can give us something more.

  12. As our entire world is working together in the fight against this insidious beast, I’ve been incredibly touched by the kindness of others. I wouldn’t wish these moments we are going through upon anyone, the struggle has been enormous, the depth of despair seems insurmountable and yet these times have bought out the most beautiful side of humanity. My own personal world has been shattered with both my husband and I stood down, the financial impact has been crippling, and the mental anguish has been confronting, and the uncertainty for our future has caused us all to slow down, take a moment and breathe. I am beyond grateful for the compassion of William and Kate ... they are reading the mood of our world so perfectly, and this initiative by Heads Together has resonated with me so personally at this moment in time. My tears just wouldn’t stop this morning ... I pray that you all are doing as well as you can, and send love and virtual hugs from Australia. 💕💕💕

    1. Oh Dee, I wish I could be sure you would see this message. I am so, so sorry for all you are going through. Mentally sitting beside you and holding your hand, reassuring you that you are not alone.

    2. Dee, I am SO SORRY for your pain! The affect has been so extremely unfair -- people working three jobs to survive suddenly find themselves with no jobs, no money, no food, and no rent funds. I have been very little affected, but I hope so much that things get better for you and everyone else.

  13. Fantastic job being donee both of them. I just saw on the news, that the Queens diary has been completely cleared. With her majesty not able to carry out her royal duties, Harry gone, Andy staying out of the limelight. The Family are spread very thin. The Duke and Duchess have done great work, as have the Earl and Countess of Sussex. I would love to see Zara stepping up to help her grandmother, Queen and County. She is her Mother's daughter. A perfect example for hard work and duty to the Crown.

    1. I quite agree with you about Zara, she is her mother's daughter and seems to have an excellent work ethic. She would be a wonderful addition as a senior royal, perhaps it is something that is being considered in the event Princess Anne ever did step down from her responsibilities.

  17. The public announcement is so well done! Very meaningful and somehow very personal. I love the dress! Love the floral design and think the sleeves are awesome! Kate has worn several designs recently with lower necklines so wearing a high neckline for this seems just right!

  18. Even in a dress I don't particularly like, she's lovely. Good to see William and Catherine staying in touch and bringing some comfort, calm and caring words to these times.

  19. I am glad the Cambridges are staying active and supporting mental health in these strange times! The collar/bust of the dress is beautiful and works well for the video chat, but the full body picture looks like something a frumpy grandma would wear, in my personal opinion.

I really like this dress on her, I know others will not like it. I think it fits her willowy frame and the color is great on her. I like the color, this is her actual style and she is comfortable and looks great. I like that she is not a flaunter nor dress like an internet celebrity. Its nice to see them but missing engagements when they would be out and about, especially with the Wessex's and the queen at trooping etc. such strange times to live.

I've noticed the drastic reduction in comments here, I wonder if its because the folks that were always negative feel that is not appropriate at this time or because they are busy with someone else's drama or their own while trying to manage life right now? love your blog and check in daily. I hope everyone here is doing ok? thank you charlotte.

  21. Thanks, Charlotte for this interesting post. Very enlightening as to Mental Health Awareness week. Great theme: KINDNESS. The world sure could benefit from a lot MORE KINDNESS. Glad the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge remain committed to such a worthy cause.

  22. A lovely dress I hope we get to see her wearing it to an engagement one day I would like to see how she would accessorise. I wonder what other new clothes she has that we won’t see for example for Ascot, Trooping etc?? I guess we may never know.

  23. I am glad we are all on the road to a bit of normalcy. Fighting an enemy in war one can see,is one thing, fighting one, one can not see is something different all together. I had this horrible virus, it took almost two months to feel better, I don't wish this on anyone. A great THANK YOU to the DR's. AND NURSES,who do this every hour of the day. All of you are the A LISTER'S of Society. It is important that Kate and William give words of HOPE and SUPPORT. Take Care Everyone.

It’s nice to log on and see some good happy news. I’ve had eye strain from screen time and have to limit what I read. I won’t limit this blog ! It’s very important that we all have people we can speak to and share our feelings with right now. I’m calling people more just to hear their voices. Zoom and other video calls are becoming essential to connect. I’m very impressed with how the Cambridge’s are continuing to connect with people.

  25. I see that W & K tried their hand at bingo calling via Zoom for a senior's home in Wales. So cute!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's a very pretty print but that would have been sufficient -- just a nice form-fitting dress with no embellishments. However, it certainly looked great for the zoom and then Kate can enjoy the details as she obviously likes them. :)
