To mark the anniversary, William and Kate spoke to five of Shout's volunteers about their experiences over the past twelve months and how their work has been altered during the pandemic. Again, throughout the entire process with the fledgling organisation, it's been heartening to see so many volunteers coming forward and putting their hands up to say, "I want to help". The text line currently has over 1,800 volunteers who are available 24/7 to offer guidance during a time when many are struggling in different ways.
Kate asked volunteers: "Have the calls changed in any way since lockdown? Has there been a shift or has it just been an increase in numbers?" One volunteer discussed the effect of the "pause in life" and difficulties dealing with strained relationships, especially in abusive situations. Another volunteer revealed healthcare staff have been in touch, expressing worry and anxiety about the lack of PPE and not seeing their families. William asked: "Has it changed the way you think about volunteering? Has it changed your views on mental health in any way?" Kate added: "What sort of things help? Is it reassurance? Is it purely having these conversations?" The couple heard about the importance of being heard, especially for those in isolated living situations. William touched on the stigma which still exists and asked if volunteers feel enough people are being reached.
Hello! reports:
'Crisis volunteer Alexis said: "The unique support that Shout is able to provide to people in crisis is crucial at all times, but now more than ever it can serve as a lifeline to those most in need - whatever they're going through, big or small. Without the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to provide help and reassurance to others, the service simply wouldn't be able to function. That is why it was so great to hear the Duke and Duchess speak so positively not only about Shout's work but also encouraging people to get support with their mental health. We want to send a very clear message to anyone who is looking for someone to reach out to – we are here to listen to you anytime, anywhere about any problem."
Below, the Duke and Duchess attending a Shout Crisis Volunteer celebration event at the Troubadour White City Theatre last November. It certainly feels a lifetime ago now doesn't it? On that day it was revealed volunteers have had 145,000 conversations via text with people in crisis, exchanging six million messages.
The Duchess was stylish for the event in her Smythe blazer, Joseph Cady slim pants and her Gianvito Rossi pumps.
Since then the number of conversations taken by volunteers has risen exponentially to 300,000.

The eagle-eyed Heaven noticed Kate's white scalloped trim knitted cardigan is by Sandro.
The £155 piece features tonal stitching, a v-neck, three-quarter-length sleeves and copper-toned buttons.
For those searching for alternatives, Warehouse has a similar cardigan with a scalloped edge for £28 and Nordstrom offers a scalloped v neck sweater for $59.
It appears Kate accessorised with her Catherine Zoraida Fern earrings. There are several very nice Repli-Kates for the earring available at Etsy.

Kate looks lovely here. The scalloped edge on her cardigan is very flattering ☺️
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree US reader, she looks beautiful! Love this initiative and I hope that his helps to get the word out there to those who have need! cc
DeleteThank you so much Charlotte for reporting on these excellent conversations, conversations that I might have missed. I have been having media fatigue over here in the US and yours is the one email notification that I immediately perk up for. I also was interested to watch the Zoom etiquette that I have seen in my own Zoom meetings--there is usually one person who is more comfortable than others and does most of the talking. The women on the lower left and top right wanted to say something but didn't get a chance. Hope they still felt good about the meeting! It's important to have this service, especially as one of the volunteers mentioned that some people living in uncomfortable/unsafe conditions don't want to have others in the house hear them. I can identify with that. So texting is perfect.
ReplyDeleteShe is blooming in the countryside. Exceptional job being done by the Duke and Duchess. The way that they have stepped up in this crisis, sets them apart from others. What an asset they both are to the crown.
ReplyDeleteShe is looking very tan. I wonder if she has been spending lots of time outdoors.
ReplyDeleteIt does look that to all intents and purposes the Queen is retiring from public life and that the younger generation are stepping up to fill in for her and also to share the load of the Prince of Wales. They are having to find new ways of carrying out their duties. This will probably mean that their relationship with the news media changes as well. We live in interesting times!
ReplyDeleteI love it when she pulls her hair back. I know there are two camps around her hairstyle. Some prefer the lighter colouring but I will forever be firm in the long dark group. The lighter colour ages her in my opinion. The tanned and highlights group is something I connect more with her mother’s age group. Especially when she has her hair blown out. She might feel the “SnowWhite” look is not hers anymore. Maybe she has grown out of it. But that’s why I love it when she wears her hair back. When she ties her hair back the lighter hair isn’t as visible and she looks more her actual age..
ReplyDeleteObviously, she looks lovely either way. I just prefer the mid/late 30 look to the 50-60 department in her case. Some people look fantastic touching onto an older appearance but I don’t see that with her.
Anon I am in the dark hair group! I think it makes her whole face more youthful.
DeleteAnon 07:08, I will also always be the "long and dark" camp!

Great to see Catherine and William reaching out again to another very much needed organization. They both look wonderful. Catherine looks fantastic, great top.
ReplyDeleteDitto ali! You said it all for me. I'll just add that I love Kate's hair this way.
DeleteI loved watching the video and listening to what everybody had to say.
Thank you, Charlotte!
This is one of my favorite endeavors!
ReplyDeleteWilliam and Kate are serving the monarch well in such testing times. I know William is proud to always have her at his side in these endeavors. They both look great and happy, I love her hair pulled back this way. Thanks for the post Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteThey are doing a great job keeping in touch with their charities. Shout is a wonderful resource. I don’t think the Duchess looks tan, I think it’s the light in the room , time of day and the contrast because of the white cardigan. I hope everyone is well and pulling through this. I hope the worst will be over soon.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a beautiful cardigan on her. I'm happy to see she's wearing detailed pieces.
ReplyDeleteGreat job by both. I wonder are we seeing the new face of the royal family. If the Queen and Charles have to stay safe, they will be very limited in the work that they can do. Reassuring to know that William and Kate are prepared and ready to step up for now. Hopefully a solution to this will be found soon. Great blog and thanks for all your hard work on it.
ReplyDeleteCambridges, keep up the good work. Thanks for your part in helping to make the world a better place in which to live. Thanks, Charlotte for keeping us informed.
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to hear this charity is doing well and thriving at this time of great need. I did think Kate looked exceptionally good today. I don't know if it's the updo, the tan, the makeup or she just looks really good in white but she looked terrific!
ReplyDeleteLovely, all the way round. I always say she looks like an angel in white.
