The Cambridges Attend Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit

Ahead of tomorrow's World Mental Health Day, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended day one of the first Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit at London's County Hall on the South Bank.

The outing marks William and Kate's first official joint engagement since the Duchess returned from maternity leave with a visit to the Sayers Croft Forest School last week. The summit has been described as "the next step in a journey to a new level of co-operation so that we can improve mental health around the world."

The Duke and Duchess joined political figures, leading academics and policy-makers with one common goal: better mental health for all. The meeting will help countries work together to deal with stigma attached to mental health and address other issues to do with mental ill-health. The summit is being co-hosted by the UK Government.

Around 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life and by 2020 the World Health Organization estimates that mental health conditions will account for 15% of cases of disease in the world. Mental illness is also the biggest cause of lost economic output, with an estimated cost to the global community of nearly US$2.5 trillion a year, which is expected to increase to US$6 trillion by 2030.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said:

"This summit is a landmark moment in changing the way mental illness is perceived and treated globally. The world must unite and take this opportunity to deliver parity for mental health so it is treated the same as physical health.
Countries from across the world are in London today to agree action to tackle one of the defining challenges of the 21st century. Whether it’s challenging discrimination, promoting wellbeing at work, adopting new technologies, or empowering young people to take steps to a healthier future, long-lasting commitments will be made at this summit which will be a step towards achieving better mental health care for all."

The couple attended a workstream on 'Children, Young People and the Next Generation' where they heard presentations on two case studies of active mental health programmes from Slovenia and the USA.

More on the workshop:

"When discussing mental health or psycho-social disability we know that early intervention is key, we also know that experiences in childhood can have significant impact in later life. This workshop will consider childhood adversity and early intervention; it will look at how best to prevent mental health conditions in the first instance and support those with early symptoms to avoid those escalating. This workshop will also look at how much more we need to do for young people today, and ask whether technology is a source of help, or harm."

The workstream reflected one of the six key themes being discussed at the summit. Other themes include; Caring societies, A just society, Mental health services around the world, Research and the future of mental health and Economics and investment. Below, William and Kate visited the exhibition area and met representatives from a number of organisations to hear more about their mental health campaigns and programmes.

The couple viewed the work of Dairo Vargas, a contemporary fine artist from Colombia who will be painting an original piece of art at the Summit, inspired by the day's events.

More from the Mail Online:

He chatted to the couple before boldly asking if they would like to add their own special touch to the two metre by two metre artwork, entitled Someone to Turn To, and William immediately demurred and pushed Kate forward saying: ‘My wife, she’s the arty one!’
Laughing Kate, who studied History of Art at St Andrew’s, where she first met her husband, took the brush and joked: ‘Where can you hide it?’. ‘What colour is it?’ asked William. ‘It’s white.‘ Mr Vargas pointed to an area on one of the figure’s shoulders to which a slightly nervous Kate replied: ‘Fine?’. ‘It’s almost ruined the picture,’ joked her husband.
William was then encouraged to take his turn and said: ‘No, this is probably how you ruin a picture. Does it matter where I go?’ ‘You are allowed to go anywhere,’ encouraged Kate. ‘This is a great, great compliment. It’s great to have some creative reason in which the same [mental health] conversations are going on.’ Mr Vargas, who is based in London, later described the couple as ‘great, very fun’.

The video below begins with footage from the meeting.

The painting 'Someone To Turn To'.

Dairo Vargas is a contemporary fine artist who specialises in abstract landscape and portraiture. While the two themes are very different in mood and style, his paintings reflect ethereal qualities of nature and the human physical form. Accepting his first commission at sixteen gave him the confidence to develop as an artist. London-based Vargas graduated from Kensington and Chelsea college of Art in 2008 and is now one of the most promising emerging artists of today. Despite a busy international exhibition schedule, he partners with a number of children’s charities in Britain and abroad, mentoring young people, while also teaching adult art classes for recreation and rehabilitation.

The Duke and Duchess visited a Friendship Bench, part of an innovative programme from Zimbabwe which has taught elderly Zimbabwean women the skills to become city lay health workers.

The Friendship Bench Project aims to reduce the mental health treatment gap by using a cognitive behavioural therapy based approach at primary care level to address 'kufungisisa'. Kufungisisa, the local term for depression, is literally translated into “thinking too much”.

The Duke and Duchess discussed the project with United for Global Mental Health CEO Alisha London.

The event will also see the launch of a short film from Time to Change called ‘It’s time to talk (about mental health)’. The film features A-list American actress Glenn Close and contributors from Nigeria, India, Kenya and the UK. Sue Baker, Director of Time to Change, said: "After generations of mental health being the poor relation to physical health, many of us hope that this first ever global mental health summit will be a tipping point that prioritises more action on mental health. We’ve made major progress on mental health stigma in England, and hope the Summit acts as a springboard for change across all countries and cultures, so that there is no shame attached to mental health anywhere in the world."

The Duchess departing.

The Duchess brought back the much loved lavender Emilia Wickstead dress she wore in Hamburg last year. The dress proved so popular, it was crowned the most popular look of the Poland/Germany visit during a post-tour poll on the blog. It's a lovely colour and really pops in photos.

The dress proved so popular the designer decided to release it and appropriately name it the 'Kate' dress.

Exclusive to Matches Fashion, the £1,420 piece is described as "Emilia Wickstead's wool-crepe Kate dress is an elegantly versatile choice for the social season. It's tailored in the UK with a flattering boat neckline and long darts throughout the front and back of the bodice, then lined with black crepe to ensure a smooth fit." It's available in very limited sizing in navy, pink and red.

Kate's stylish new bag is the lilac Aspinal of London Midi Mayfair Bag (with thanks to Kate's Closet). The £495 croc bag is described as: "Encapsulating timeless vintage-inspired styling, our Midi Mayfair Bag is hand-crafted from the finest deep shine croc print Italian calf leather. Both versatile and luxurious, the structured boxy design features three inner compartments secured with our enduring shield lock clasp. What's more, sumptuous black leather complements any outfit, and makes an exquisite transitional piece from day to night. The flawless finish of the leather's rich, glassy shine and the shimmering grosgrain lining give this accessory a truly elegant feel."

It can be pre-ordered here.

The Mayfair is available in several colours including black, purple and green.

The Duchess wore her trusty Gianvito Rossi praline pumps.

And accessorised with her Mappin & Webb Empress necklace and earrings.

Tomorrow, the Duchess will make her first visit as Royal Patron of the V&A to open the museum's new Photography Centre. Kate will tour the opening display at the Photography Centre entitled Collecting Photography: From Daguerreotype to Digital.

:) I wonder whether it's the colour, the cut or the overall style that I like the most, Erika, and the answer is probably the colour... so gentle/fresh/positive! It suits her perfectly!

    3. Yes, for me, I think it's the color as well. It's everything you say, Zora, and it pops in the photographs as Charlotte points plus and she wears it well. Just so very pretty. I haven't liked one of her dresses this much since the LK Bennet Lasa she wore in Austalia.

  9. Lovely rewear and different accessories to change the look up. I always adore an appearance of the Mapping and Webb earrings and necklace.

The bag is similar in design to her Chanel calfskin and enamel we first saw in Paris last year but I think this is prettier. Nice and practical for a conference and bonus it is from a British company.

Sigh at the reappearance of those pumps but they work with this particular outfit and cute bag. So I don't mind them so much here :)

She has carried similar bags before and since they are coming more back in style it's not shocking we see her with them more. They are from a standard brand for her, in her standard colours so I think it's most likely just an extension of her current style.

Particularly the way William and Kate work together, they truly do enjoy each other and this is a great first joint engagement!! Kate is absolutely glowing, her hair is amazing (its the perfect length and volume),and her enthusiasm for what she is doing evident. I think Kate's choice in clothing is thoughtful for this engagement and applaud her doing repeats with new little twists to freshen the look; keeps it interesting without making it all about the clothes. Love the exchange between Kate, William and the artist. Above all else, love the initiative and that they are promoting "Everyone, everywhere should have someone to turn to"!! It is so true and so needed. Great post, it brings a smile to me today...so glad to see Kate back. cc

  19. Pale lavender is not exactly Kate’s best color, especially with her summer tan, but I love the design, the fit, and the expert construction of this dress. It is a perfect repeat for the occasion, and the bag is very nice. A bit more makeup could help Kate wear this color, but in moderation since she is at work in daytime. Her hair is longer but still controllable. I hope she does not grow it any longer. Kate and Wiiliam look so nice together. I look forward to the rest of the post.

    2. Kate looks better in the lavender indoors, and in the Hamburg picture when her skin was paler. I also liked her hair better in Hamburg. But I am glad she chose this dress because it suits her so well, and her figure is now perfect.

It sounds as though the conference was fun as well as instructive. I like that it seems to emphasize mental health rather than mental illness. Kate and William seemed to enjoy it very much.

    4. I agree about the hair colour and the tan. Not the biggest fan of the dress in general. The colour and the cut+fabric don’t go together well in my opinion. A flowy dress would match the lavender better.

I really love that Kate and Wills are advocating for mental health. My manfriend, as I call him, suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) two years ago and is still recovering today. I've learned how your mental health can affect your health and how people have a very difficult time understanding an illness they can't seen, including too the point of disbelief. Not only is his mental health a day by day basis, but as a care giver, I constantly have to be aware of how I'm feeling and how I'm handling things. Thank god for my therapist is all I have to say. I think this such a great cause and that my own country needs to start focusing on mental health issues.

Kate also looks lovely and engaged. Bravo!

  29. I always love the engagements that surround mental health. They are so important and they prove how important the royal family is in this day and age. And as a person who has struggled with mental health, I am so appreciative that they do these and bring attention to questions that affect so many.

Absolutely love this outfit! It is one of my favourite dresses Kate has ever worn and I've been waiting for this dress to return. I do prefer the accessorising that she had in Hamburg over today, but honestly I am just happy over the return of this dress.

Also, I noticed that Prince William is also repeating his outfit from Hamburg! He's wearing the same tie and, if not the same than at least a similar, suit!

I have some serious bag envy for her new bag:) I honestly don't really remember this dress from the first time around, its not really a stand out to me, but I really like the hem, it seems floaty, and I like how fitted the bodice is, she is really in great shape for having a 6 month old. and wills looks great too. nice to see both William and harry getting refreshed in the clothes department! they are (can be!) their wives greatest accessories:)

  37. What a great and important engagement for them both to be attending and developing the whole issue of Mental Health on a wider scale.
Like many it's lovely to see her again in this simple and elegant outfit. It's got a great silhouette and the colour really suits her. I'm all for her using these pops of colour when she's on an important high profile event (just like the Queen we need to see her and she stands out) and go back to her neautrals for when she's amongst the family.

I wonder what she's going to wear at the wedding on Friday? My guess will be the pale blue version of the Coat dress she wore to Meghan's (think she wore to the RAF celebration flypast) but mix it up with one of her new hats pale blue from Trooping the colour. Think this will be a typical Kate thing to repeat and it will be a nice balance. She has been tending to wear complimentary colours to the bridal party though (Pippa, Meghan and recently Sophie Carter's) so I guess it will depend on that!!

    1. Just an opinion but I believe from what I have read and heard via documentaries the Queen wears very bright and all over color in an effort to be seen. She is not a women of great height and I have learned this is the reason for her color choices. I do not think that is the case with Kate. In person, she is hard to miss considering her height especially with pumps.

    2. I'm wondering as well Mr. D. Mainly because I just love guessing. So there are two repeats I would love to see, the first is the beautiful sheath arrival dress in Canada during 2016. Of course she could change up the hat and accessories. And the other is the pretty light blue Emilia Wickstead she wore when visiting Luxembourg.

And speaking of lovely blue outfits, there's the Catherine Walker light blue coat dress with white floral trim that she wore the Queen's 90th birthday.

  40. Love seeing them again! On an un-related note, I'm watching The Crown again and notice that before Andrew is named the Queen tells Margaret, "Well, we briefly considered George but then there's been too many of those and anyway, no one could live up to Papa. Then we thought of Louis but that's a bit too...(Margaret interrupts and says "foreign" and the Queen agrees)." This was filmed after Prince George was born but before Louis. Obviously that conversation may have never taken place in reality but I thought it notable that The Crown's writer's mention the name "Louis" when that wasn't a name guessed very often by us. :) Anyone know if there's any truth to the Queen ever considering the name Louis for her children? I mean, I could see why with Mountbatten being so important to them. Anyway, mainly thought it was just neat the writer's used that name well before Prince Louis was born. :)

  44. (I originally posted this under a different name accidentally (my default google name that my son set years ago and I can't seem to change it lol)) Love seeing them again! :)

  45. She must know how much we all love this dress. She looks so healthy and happy. Great to see her out and about supporting such important causes. I know she will find the perfect balance between family and work. Thanks Charlotte for the post..

  46. The Duchess looks fantastic today. Love the fact she recycles. This dress is elegant. Love her accessories, her shoe colour I think is nice, but her bag I just love it is so chic!. Lovely to see her wearing jewellery today. More importantly the World Mental health summit, whatever attention can be brought to a illness that doesn't discriminate and so horrid to its sufferers.Thank you for the blog, it is always so informative and up to date!

    1. Awww Anna you poor thing!
I had HG too recently, and baby was born June 1st. I'm really wishing you all the best as I know how much of a soul crusher HG is. If it makes you feel better, some people recover from it at 15ish weeks. I didn't, but my HG became just usual morning sickness where I was only affected until about 1pm of a day when I was about 35 weeks pregnant.

The only things that made a slight improvement for me was being in a cool room, lights down, and sucking on frozen juice or ice blocks. Lying on the shower floor with water running on me (with hubby's supervision) helped. And ondansetron combined with unisome and maxolon (these are Australian medication names) all together also took the edge off so I was able to watch TV or read without vomiting while it worked. The unisome did knock me out though if I took a full dose. And in extremes, a good hit of IV fluids made me feel almost brand new for a little while. If you are able to, little bites or sips of something calorie dense but not too heavy will help keep strength up. After taking the pill cocktail I tended to have custard, rice pudding or something similar and even if it came back up it wasn't unpleasant as other foods could be πŸ™ŠπŸ™ŠπŸ™Š
Don't forget your prenatals if you can choke it down πŸ™‚
Even with HG I still gained 22kg!! And still holding on to about 12 of them. I don't know how Kate does it, she's superhuman.

I hope that you feel better soon ❤️πŸ™‚πŸ’•

    2. Thank you so much for your kind words Chrystal-I really appreciate that you try to cheer me up!You are totally right:A soul crasher it is....I’ve been admitted to hospital for the third time now,so beeing picked up from the bathroom floor sounds quite familiar to me.That‘s a situation where you would really need someone professional to talk to as your thoughts and feelings go totally crazy ...but unfortunately here in Germany it is still considered as „morning sickness that every woman has to endure“ and neither mental support nor medicaments are given to you.(At least that is what I have experienced). I think that is the case in many parts of the world and I had hoped that the Duchess -after having experienced it herself-would support some kind of research organization for HG or at least would put a focus on mental health problems of women suffering from HG...But nevertheless you are right Chrystal-superwoman she is indeed! And maybe her own experiences with HG were even the kick off to her mental health campaigns in general. That leaves me with congratulating you for „surviving“ those 35 weeks and of course for having your little oneπŸ‘πŸ˜Š

  48. She looks so well, fit and enjoying herself. This is a perfect dress, I'm a fan of the praline pumps, and the new little handbag sticks the landing. Good for her.

These two are best friends and it’s so nice to see.

  54. It's great to see them together! Kate's dress is lovely, but I wonder why this time she didn't go with blue, as it is related to the mental health awareness and campaign. Maybe this type of purple is related as well, because two years ago for mental health day, she chose a similar pink/purple flower dress and last year she wore the blue lace Temperley dress. She might alternate the colors! All beautiful of course.
I think that for the wedding on Friday she will choose a dark blue dress and coat.
Can't wait to see Princess Eugenie and all!

  55. Please forgive me Charlotte, but since you do not have a page devoted to Princess Eugenie, I am hoping you would not mind my posting a snippet about the upcoming royal wedd8ng here. KP just released a list of attendants, so since George and Caharlotte are attends, there is a link to Duchess Kate’s page. Beyond William and Kate’s children, the list of royal attendants is quite spectacular. Traditionally, weddings have always been about the bride and the bride’s family, and since Princess Eugenie is the first officially titled royal princess in the UK to marry, since Princess Anne, this is quite an awesome event. I hope that Princess Eugenie goes full on princess in terms of her gown and styling - wouldn’t it be lovely if she wears something borrowed from her Granny? It is such a show of love and family support that she has chosen so many of her cousins, the Queens grand and great-grandchildren to attend her - what a glorious day this will be for the royal family!
