Duchess Kate Returns for Outdoor Adventure with Sayers Croft Forest School!

The Duchess of Cambridge made her much-anticipated return to royal duties today, with a visit to Sayers Croft Forest School and Wildlife Garden at Paddington Recreation Ground.

The engagement officially marks the end of Kate's maternity leave. Since Prince Louis was born we've seen Kate at a handful of engagements including Trooping the Colour, RAF centenary events and Wimbledon. The Cambridges spent a large portion of the summer at their country home Anmer Hall, enjoyed two weeks on the paradise island of Mustique, and travelled to Balmoral for a weekend with the Royal family. September saw George and Charlotte return to Thomas' Battersea and Willcocks Nusery for another year. The pair also had starring roles as page boy and bridesmaid for the Norfolk wedding of Charlotte's godmother Sophie Carter.

Kate chatted with a group of representatives upon arrival, before receiving a very warm welcome and several hugs from a group of children. Royal reporter Emily Andrews tweeted: "Kate was very happy to talk to the kids at St Augustine’s CoE Primary. They are aged 4-5 so the school year between George and Charlotte. Kate was great with them, asked them to show her all around and tell her what they liked best."

Today's engagement was an ideal choice for Kate combining her love of the outdoors and children.

In a letter written to coincide with Children's Hospice Week, organised by Together for Short Lives earlier this year, Kate wrote: "Spending quality time together is such an important aspect of family life and for me, as a mother, it is the simple family moments like playing outside together that I cherish."

Sayers Croft is a residential activity centre based in Surrey, which is owned by Westminster City Council. It aims to involve children and the local community in the environment, providing outdoor facilities for those who may otherwise be unable to access them. In London they have worked with Westminster City Council and Ruth Willmott Associates to create a Wildlife Garden, with an edible garden area and a Forest Garden.

People reports:

'As she walked through the park, Kate shook hands with other parents out with their children and met with locals. She told one group of well-wishers that she had enjoyed her time with the kids at their forest school. She smiled and added, “All I found were tiny slugs! There are amazing facilities here,” she said. “Are you out for a walk?”
Mirianthe Engomitis, 56, says, “She said we were lucky to live near a place like this. She was asking if we had been here to see the park progress. It was lovely of her to stop.”

Last year, Sayers Croft Forest School had over 5,500 visits by schoolchildren from across Westminster and neighbouring boroughs, giving inner-city children a unique opportunity to learn about and engage with the natural world.'

Sayers Croft Field Centre was built in 1939 as part of the Camp Schools Programme to provide an educational base for city children to visit and learn about the countryside. However, at the outbreak of World War II the following year, the centre became home to evacuees from Catford Central Boys School in London, many of whom spent four years at Sayers Croft and remember it fondly. After the war the centre returned to its original purpose, to provide residential visits for schools where children could study science, geography and a wealth of other hands on subjects in the natural environment.

The centre still has all of the original buildings as well as original air raid shelters but a lot has changed in 70 years. Below, the dining room, then and now.

Sayers Croft has 56 acres comprising of a variety of habitats including ancient and managed woodlands, meadows, ponds, streams and fields. The site also has: Indoor archery range, Iron Age roundhouse, Maze, Craft room, BBQ and campfire areas, Camping field and tents and an Adventure Playground.

The Roundhouse is particularly popular with children visiting.

A thank you letter from a little girl called Amelie.

The Mail reports:

'Zoe Stroud, the interim head at Sayers Croft, said the duchess 'loved getting amongst the ivy' and spotted a frog. Ms Stroud said: 'The duchess asked parents questions about whether they found a change in their children, in their ability to work together, in their self esteem.' She said the children knew who they were speaking to: 'They're not that shy, but they do know she's a princess. Ms Stroud added that one of the youngsters referred to Kate as 'your majesty'.

Hello! reports "She helped collect leaves as the kids made 'leaf crowns'. "Look I made this," one youngster said, showing Kate his creation. "It's so pretty, so pretty. Those leaves look like jewels. They are amazing," she said."

The Duchess saw first-hand the positive impact that the Forest School has on children's emotional and physical wellbeing. She was shown the wildlife garden and met children involved in exploratory and investigative outdoor activities. Kate told the group she spends hours looking for spiders with George and Charlotte at home.

The Duchess joined Forest School sessions. Kate also heard from instructors and teachers about the beneficial effect that outdoor learning and being around nature can have on children's mental health, wellbeing and development.

Then it was Storytime with the group.

This little lady stole the show :)

Emily Andrews said Kate met a very sweet little boy named Romi. “He’s very chatty, he’s almost the same age as my little boy” she said.

Then it was time to say goodbye.

The video below is packed with moments from Kate's outdoor adventure with the excited group.

The Duchess was casual in new green separates and favourite pieces from her wardrobe for the outing.

Christin Zi noted Kate selected pieces from Swedish outdoor clothing brand Fjallraven. The $200 Stina Jacket is described as a "practical, comfortable, durable, everyday jacket". It featured a fixed hood and two side pockets. It's available in several colours at Fjallraven, MooseJaw, Zappos and Amazon.

The Duchess also wore the forest green wool Ovik sweater by the brand.

Laura identified Kate's blouse as the Joseph Rainer Bud Print style. It is described as: "Adorned with a seasonal floral print, the Rainer Bud Print Blouse blends a delicate feminine fabric with uniform-inspired detailing. Crafted from 100% silk, the fluid long-sleeve blouse is shaped into a slim fit with prominent front pockets." It retails for £395 at Joseph and Matches Fashion.

Kate wore her olive green ZARA biker trousers. The Duchess first wore them during the 2016 India tour.

The Mid-Rise trousers feature distinctive knee detail.

Kate accessorised with her Monica Vinader Siren wire earrings.

And completed the look with her Penelope Chilvers Long Tassel Boots.

Kate's hair looked fabulous today. Welcome back :)

Kensington Palace confirmed William and Kate will attend the first Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit on Tuesday 9th October. The Mental Health Summit will see political figures, leading academics and policy-makers from around the world come together with one common goal: better mental health for all. The meeting will help countries work together to deal with stigma attached to mental health and address other issues to do with mental ill-health. The couple will attend a workstream on 'Children, Young People and the Next Generation'.

How great to see Kate back again, and so clearly in her element! Kids and nature, that's Kate's sweet spot!

Perfect outdoorsy look. Nice as a Swede to see her in Fjällräven again! And I like the litte "twist" with the dotted shirt! Very nice!

....and she's back!!! Yay! Kate looks great - and very much in her element with the kids. I agree with Rebecca - kids and nature - her sweet spot. She looks amazing - love everything about this. I really love following the other royals, but Kate is my all time favorite and I really missed her while she was on maternity leave. Happy she had the time with her family, but man I'm glad she's back. Welcome Back Kate!!!

  7. So very happy to see the Duchess at today's event. I am glad she had the time with Prince Louis to bond and spend time with Charlotte and George while they were on their summer break from school. I agree with Rhonda and Rebecca, Catherine is very much in her element with nature, children, and sports. Her outfit for today was perfect and I love the muted olives and browns.

I always find it amazing that someone can see the peek of a collar and be able to identify a blouse from a specific maker out of the millions that can be found online!!! Fashion detectives!

Precisely! Well done, all you fast and knowledgeable fashion experts !! 😎 I have NO idea how you do it! 😁When I see Kate, I always see her smile first and I hardly notice what she's wearing, I just think "I love this/ I like this/ I don't like this too much" -- and the next moment all the various items of her outfit are identified?!? Including half-hidden earrings and 3/4 hidden dresses 😀!

  8. Omg I love this first engagement! I love that it's not "princessy." Since Kate went on maternity leave all we've seen her in are very ceremonial princessy engagements. I guess i'm in the minority where I don't feel like the fashions she favors in those types of ceremonial engagements are flattering. I dislike the coat dresses, the nude pumps, the fascinators, that up-do. I do however love casual Kate. She always seems warmer, more in her element, less like she's "acting like a princess" and more just herself. And she looks younger too.

And I love this length of hair. Not too short, not too long, not too fussy, just casual chic. Welcome back Kate.

    3. I agree. While Kate always looks lovely, some of her recent looks seem quite stiff and formal to the event in hand. We expect to see the hats and suits on occasion, but she's been especially conservative of late. Today is the real her, an English country mum of means. Her hair looks great.

  21. Love it all. Kate seemed to enjoy the event, her engagement with kids is so natural, no mom-like at times and less formal. Her outfit was great, some new elements to keep it fresh but nothing so crazy as to provoke expense questions. And I feel like her overall look was more vintage early years Kate. Especially the hair, which I thought looked fabulous. A little lighter and not so heavy.

    2. Mollie, I was thinking the same thing. But you know, if one is consistent having a healthy organic diet, always keeping active & having a good solid pattern of keeping strong & toned & not slacking off.... I think that's the key! I was reflecting on that about myself. I've been in & out of shape so many times that my body doesn't know what's up. Whereas my husband once out of University, set about living a consistent healthy active life, working out regularly. It changed his pattern of living & it changed his whole body shape & he's maintained it for decades & it's not work for him, he enjoys it! I think that's the key! I'm speaking to myself, as much as anyone else that reads this!! lol :)

      Delete
    3. You're right Becca, I think that's the secret... To bad I was not good of keeping up with a healthy lifestyle :(

      Silvia

      Delete
    4. There is absolutely no need for the diet to be "organic." Organic changes nothing - nutritional value or the benefits of the label. Just eat fruits and vegetables and stop worrying about the label. Unfortunately, the push to always chose organic actually turns a lot of low income shoppers away from fruits and vegetables. I certainly hope Katie knows that and would never promote such a thing.

Just eat your fruits and vegetables!

      -AZ

      Delete
    5. AZ, I would say that regular fruits and vegetables are better than a bag of chips, but I am a believer in organic food and try to eat as much of it as possible. Have you ever compared an organic chicken to a regular one, for example?

      Delete
    6. There is more involved in organic than just taste. True organic food is pesticide free. Recently there was news of a pesticide being found in products consumed by children, oat cereal, for example. The idea is to use natural means of dealing with pests and disease and for encouraging growth. Marigolds will discourage pests on tomato plants. Remember hormones and antibiotics found in cow's milk?
      Unfortunately,
some of these organic methods are time-consuming and costly, which can result in higher prices. I think it is possible some organic suppliers jack up the price unnecessarily. I don't think there are uniform laws from state to state in the USA regarding certified organic foods.
It is probably true that some products falsely labeled "organic" are no better than other fruits and vegetables. It is also likely that some cannot afford organic foods. I suspect cost may also operate as an excuse for some. "They are too expensive." I think a hard look at the check out stand in the supermarket might reveal items just as expensive with little or no food value, including some sugary breakfast cereals, soda, and chips. It is a choice for all but the most impoverished. Food banks are doing better at including fresh foods, hopefully some organically produced.
I think Kate gets a supply of true organic food from local farms in Norfolk as well as Charles's High Grove farms.
However, one does not have to be a princess to eat healthily and I think that is the takeaway here.

  29. Perfect return engagement for Kate: active, outdoors, children, nature :) I always love Casual Kate engagements and this is no exception! She was so great with the children, the children loved her and it was lovely to see her chatting and interacting with the various adults too.

Nice, appropriate and good quality outfit for the great outdoors. I've always loved how she is a Duchess but not above wearing less expensive, affordable items like today. I adore the way she has stalwart pieces which she has worn for years with the earrings, jeans and boots making a wecomed comeback. Those boots especially show the value of buying good quality leather boots so you can still wear them over a decade later!

I love her hair this length, too, and am glad to see she brought back the curls.

  31. Kate looks absolutely wonderful!! Refreshed & back in a fav pair of pants! Her hair is glorious! Love the color, love the cut! I don't know if anyone else felt this, but I felt there was a more relaxed, confident, really comfortable in her own skin vibe that came through to me! I was struck by the difference between, when adults are sweet interacting with kids & when adults clearly are very comfortable mucking in with kids & truly enjoy & delighting in them! That's the magic thing that Kate has. She clearly really loves kids & nature & being a hands on Mum with her own 3, she is quite at home in that world! It's that thing you can't fake. I've loved watching Meghan blossom & wasn't sure if it would change how I felt about Kate when she returned? But I was so delighted to find that I was just as excited as I ever was about seeing Kate again. I was also struck by how each woman is so wonderful in their own way & that there will never be any need for comparison! They each are so gifted & have their own authentic concerns that they are passionate about & both are ever so lovely with everyone they meet! The BRF really hit the gold mine with these 2 Duchesses & the Brothers were pretty lucky too.... Love matches & true Partnerships for life!! Diana's work paid off! She & Charles both have much to be proud of in these 2 men & their choices of wives & in the paths both couples have chosen! Bravo Kate & Bravo Charlotte for a wonderful welcome back post!! Yay! :)

  39. Welcome back Kate! She is definitely in her element. She looses beautiful . If I didn’t know she gave birth to three children, you would not know from these photos. Simply gorgeous. Head to toe. We really have a terrific fall to look forward to with Harry And Meghan on tour, Will and Kate in U.K.! Thank you Charlotte for dueling Duchess blogs!! Love them and you! 😊💕. 40. Kate was amazing with the kids! She was holding their hands, helping them make their crowns and fill their water jugs, and really gets down to their level. She took it all in stride when they were hugging her and is just so genuine. I imagine this is exactly how she is with her own children. I love that she is looking for spiders and slugs and has her knee down on the ground. Definitely the appropriate outfit for this event. It is something I would wear . . . well maybe not the skinny pants . . .but if I had her body I would! Her hair is gorgeous!!

Wow, just as gorgeous as ever! I’m loving her hair and this great casual outfit. She seems like such a natural with the kids. So glad to see her back! And I agree, thank you so much for covering both blogs Charlotte. So well written and informative. 😊

  43. I wonder if this is one she read or heard about like Farms for City Children last year. I do love how Kate has these children and outdoors engagements visiting different places organisations. It's so important and something she has championed since becoming a member of the BRF and it's great publicity for charities like Sayers Croft and the Forest School too.

Her hair was absolute PERFECTION today! Perfect length, styling and bangs/no bangs! I LOVED it. I loved the whole outfit!

These outings are my favorite because they are so cute. Clearly the little girl in the pink jacket was taken with Kate the entire visit. She wasn't going to let her go!

I can hardly describe how happy I am to see the Duchess back. I've missed her so much! She looks happy doing what she loves more: being with children. I love her for this, the way she looks natural and at ease. Her look is perfect and appropriate for the event. It must be so confortable. Love the jacket and boots! Charlotte you describe events always in the best way. It's like I can participate, reading your detailed pieces. I always look forward a new one, because it's always such a nice surprise and a beautiful moment of the day. Thank you for this!

  50. Great post Charlotte and welcome back Kate! She looks lovely and, I agree, in her element with nature & children. She is definitely able to be competent and perfect at state banquets and other formal events, but I think, in this context she shows herself as she truly is: lovely and caring. Her strength is in this skill of accomplishing every duty or situation with the right approach and spontaneous attitude. What a great woman! William is THE lucky one!
A personal note...I love Paddington Recreation Ground, I have lived nearby and I have so good memories. Well done on the wildlife projects carried out there. Everything is so precious when related to nature, especially in the middle of cities and modern urban spaces.
Can't wait for "a thrilling October" with many next events to follow!

    3. Hi Zora, and thank you for asking. :-) Life has been a little crazy lately (in a good way) and I have not been able to follow the blog on a regular basis.

And I will add a shout out to Julia. Hope all is well on her end...

Is everyone looking forward to Eugenie's wedding? I cannot believe it's October already!

Hi royalfan, glad to see you 🙂! A little positive-crazy sounds good. Oh yes, the wedding is just a week from today! I'm excited and hope to see both the Queen and Prince Philip, as well as many other royals. Eugenie and Jack must already have the pre-wedding fever. Do you know if she will become Mrs Eugenie Brooksbank, or how she will be titled? Eugenie Brooksbank, Princess of York? Princess Eugenie Brooksbank of York? (just kidding, but I really don't know!)

    5. She will be Princess Eugenie, Mrs. Brooksbank.

    7. Zora, I'm really looking forward to seeing whatever coverage will be available in the US. And I wonder if the royal family, Sarah included, will enter the Chapel quietly as they did when H&M got married. It will be interesting to see the overall response to Sarah; I have a feeling that it will be a warm one.

    10. Ha! Erika, you have a very good memory. Yes, I did so for prior royal weddings, but I have a scheduling conflict this time. LOL. We have tickets to a show on Friday night and it will require a bit of traveling. I'm thinking that a caffeine IV will be in order. :-)

Zora, I will watch as much of it as I can and will rely on Charlotte's coverage, and all of you, to fill in the dots. :-)

I cannot wait to see Eugenie's gown and the other royal ladies' outfits.

    11. 😊 I just remember because I did so as well. TLC is showing the wedding again at 7:25. If the kids cooperate and my husband can get them to school, I can watch. Fingers crossed. Hope you get to see it as well, royalfan. Enjoy your show!

  52. I'm a bit late to the commenting party... but I feel the need to express how delighted I am to see Kate again! I missed her. She looks amazing, I'm going to repeat what other people have said. Seeing her is a reminder to me to look after myself better and to also go out into nature more because it does make me happy!
I've always admired Kate's ease with and joy of children. As someone who has very little interaction with children and doesn't really know what to say to/do with them, I think I should study these and past videos haha
Also thank you for the little history about the centre, Charlotte, it was very interesting. It sounds like a much needed place

  55. Has anyone tried the Really Wild Clothing Spanish boots? How is it different from the Penelope Chivers ones? I am debating which one and the RW one is half the PC one.. So it seems like a better deal. Is it wearable?

    1. I own a pair of the Really Wild Spanish Boots in Black and they are an excellent pair of boots. I don't own Penelope Chivers so can't compare, but I always thought this pair of Kate's boots was from Really Wild and I ordered mine after the India tour. I love them and wear them routinely in the winter, completely wearable. I also own a pair of Kate's Aquatalia Rhumba boots in black suede, (found them on sale), which I have had for four years and they are equally as wonderful. Absolutely love the Aquatalia brand. Kate's boots are what I have invested in as a staple in my wardrobe. No regrets! cc

    2. Hi Cece - thanks. I love Aquatalia too. I have bought quite a few boots and shoes over the years. I agree about the Rhumba. Good to know about RW. I need a winter boot that is stylish but also walkable.

  56. Like everyone else I am delighted to see Kate back and looking confident and very fit.
This was an ideal vent to come back with as she is very much a country girl and wonderful with children.
I am also pleased that her next engagement is with William and a high - powered serious one on global mental health I understand the first in this country encompassing many other nations followed by another of Kate's passions a photographic exhibition at her new Patronage the V & A museum. I feel it is a good balance of events to get her going.
It will be an interesting week.
I very much hope she & William undertake more joint engagements over the next few weeks

  57. I know this is off topic but I just saw picture’s of pippa Middleton and her husband entering the Lindo wing to either meet the doctor or tour the place. I think she is going to give birth to her child in the Lindo wing. I wonder if she will have the same doctors and midwives that kate had. But I really hope there isn’t a sea of photographers when pippa and James leave with the baby. That would be weird.

  58. My comment about this post evidently got lost in cyberspace. I was very pleased by the way Kate's outfit blended with her surroundings. It was also ecologically sound and perfect for having fun with children. Her return engagement, as many have said, was as well designed as her appearance, emphasizing her love of children, nature, and physical activity. She appeared to enjoy it immensely.
