The Duchess in Traditional Maheen Khan & Catherine Walker Looks For Islamabad Engagements

For day two of their tour of Pakistan, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge carried out several engagements in the capital city of Islamabad beginning with a visit to Model College for girls.

William and Kate landed in the country last night with their staff and members of the press in the British Government's Royal Air Force Voyager. Aides told reporters they timed their departure to do the school run with George and Charlotte before leaving. Their return home on Friday has been scheduled to ensure they will be back to spend the weekend with the children.

Due to security reasons, today's itinerary was shared just before William and Kate's engagements began this morning. Following their visit to Model College, it's a nature based engagement with schoolchildren in Margalla Hills. Also on the itinerary: a meeting with the President and lunch with the Prime Minister. This afternoon, the couple will meet staff members from the British High Commission and the day will draw to a close with a glittering evening reception at the Pakistan Monument.

Model College was established over forty years ago. The government run school supports students from the ages of 4 to 18.

William and Kate learned about the benefits of the 'Teach For Pakistan' programme which recruits young graduates and professionals for a two-year Fellowship to teach in schools with a lack of qualified educators. 49% of girls are out of school in Pakistan, it's one of several initiatives in place to tackle the issue.

It's based on a similar programme in the UK called 'Teach First' which has proven very successful. It's interesting to see the link between both countries and recognising the need to address similar problems across the world.

Since 2011, the scheme has recruited over 100 teachers with 7700 students taught and 64 schools supported.

Simon Perry reports:

“Access to quality education, particularly to girls and young women is one of the U.K.’s top priorities in Pakistan,” the couple’s spokesman said ahead of the royal tour.
Area education officer Mohammed Sohailkhan also echoed those sentiments to reporters on Tuesday, noting that the quality of education, particularly for girls, varied across the country.
“In recent years there has been gradual progress in understanding how important education is for girls and young women. There is a realization of what it can mean in terms of jobs and prospects,” he said. “I can’t paint you an entirely rosy picture. It does still fluctuate wildly, particularly in rural regions, where there has traditionally been cultural barriers towards this, notably in terms of sending girls away to college. But these barriers are slowly being broken down.”

William told a group of science students he had always wanted to fly. "I changed a lot as I got older but I always wanted to learn to fly. I was flying for a while a actually. I love flying, I feel very free."

The Duchess met a group of kindergarten children.

More from The Telegraph:

Asked by the chattering group of girls what they thought of Pakistan so far, the duchess beamed and replied: "It’s fantastic, this is only day one for us. We are going to the north so we will be interested to explore see the difference."

"Work Hard. Be Smart".

You'll notice the colour of Kate's ensemble matches the uniform.

'Sitting in the classroom with a group of teenagers, Prince William - who will, of course, be king one day - was asked what he had wanted to do when he was younger after Aima, 14, told him that she wanted to be a brain surgeon.
"Actually I changed a lot as I got older but I always wanted to learn to fly. I was flying for a while a actually. I love flying, I feel very free [and) I like learning a skill, I enjoy that. I can relate the science of what you do," he said.
The same student also told the prince that the girls were ‘big fans of your mother’.
Prince William gave a broad, slightly wistful, smile and said: "You were, really? Oh that’s very sweet of you. I was a big fan of my mother too.
"She came here three times. I was very small. This is my first time and it is vey nice to be here and meet you all."

A 17 minute video from the engagement.

From there, they visited Margalla Hills located at the foot of the Himalayas.

They were joined by children from several local schools participating in the World Wildlife Fund Green Schools programme.

They joined in a range of activities including setting a leopard camera trap and a new initiative to remove harmful plants.

Take a look at the breathtaking Margalla Hills. Spanning over 12,000 hectares, archaeologists have discovered human footprints, over two millions years there, preserved in sandstone. They are home to 300 species of plants - many used for medicinal purposes - and a range of wildlife including the endangered Margalla leopard.

The Duchess selected a traditional royal blue periwinkle silk Kurta with trousers and a scarf by Pakistani designer Maheen Khan. When considering local designers for the Duchess, Khan is very much top of the list. Described by Milan Fashion Week as the "Coco Chanel of the East", the award winning designer has been a dominant force in fashion for decades.

Khan's illustrious career began in the 1970s. She quickly earned the title of "Pakistan's first couturier". She founded couture label Maheen, and high street brand Gulabo, with a determination to create wearable but elegant collections for women. Khan's career has seen her design costumes for Snow White and The Huntsman and Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett. She was commissioned by Harrods to create a replica of The Queen's coronation dress to mark 60th anniversary celebrations. They ultimately decided not to go with the piece on display - instead presenting it to the British High Commission in Karachi. Khan's also the CEO of Pakistan Fashion Week.

A profile piece on the designer from Aurora:

“It humbles me to realise that I was the one who instigated all this; by default I stepped into this muddy area called fashion. I would never have dreamt that my small initiative would grow into a mega-billion rupee industry.”
It is also her opinion that the industry has become sleazy, too commercial and stagnant. Given that so many new names have entered the market recently, I asked her how easy it is to become a couturier. Her short reply is: “Do half of them even know what fashion means? They are all seamstresses, exactly where I was in 1972. What do they make that a tailor cannot?”
Khan describes fashion as something new that has never been seen before; it is about introducing a silhouette. “But, of course, none of them will tell you this because they don’t know.”
In her view, it is perfectly okay if someone wants to make pretty clothes and some money out of it, but they should not call themselves designers. “Does every man who builds a house call himself an architect? No. So why does every woman who makes clothes call herself a designer?”

The Duchess accessorised with her £7 Zeen Beaded Chandelier earrings from last night.

For Kate's first engagement, she wore a pair of £24 New Look Block Heel sandals (with thanks to Kate Middleton Style). They are also available in black at Asos.

In Margalla Hills, Kate changed into her Russell & Bromley Xpresso crossover flat shoes.

Following a quick change, William and Kate met the President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, at the Presidential Palace.

The Duke and Duchess with the President and First Lady.

Next, the couple attended a luncheon with Prime Minister Imran Khan. Of course the Prime Minister is a familiar face...

Before entering politics, Imran was a very famous cricketer, then married to one of Diana's closest friends Jemima Goldsmith. During Diana's visits to the country, she supported Mr Khan's efforts to build a cancer centre and spent a good deal of time with the couple. It is believed William and Kate will retrace her footsteps later on in the visit.

Below, Diana in Pakistan with Imran Khan and Jemima.

More from ITV:

'Khan was a family friend who, at that time, was the husband of Princess Diana’s close confidante Jemima Khan, now Jemima Goldsmith. Diana would often take her two boys, William and Harry, to play at the Goldsmith’s large property in Richmond Park in south west London.
Jemima’s mother, Annabel Goldsmith, had been in Diana’s life for many years. She was an almost mother-like figure for Diana and someone she looked up to.'

The PM spoke about his own career journey. The Express reports:

“When I went with my mother to see a Test match my cousin was playing and he scored a century and I told my mother I wanted to be a Test cricketer,” Khan said.
“I never realised how difficult it was to eventually become one. Similarly, when I told you that I wanted to succeed I didn’t realise it would take me 22 years.”
Kate interjected “You stuck with it.”

The Duchess changed into a bespoke Catherine Walker tunic and Maheen Khan white trousers for the meetings. Interestingly, Maheen Khan did quite a bit of embroidery work for Catherine Walker over the years. I expect it's likely someone from the Walker brand suggested Khan as a fantastic Pakistani brand to wear during the tour. The vivid grass green hue features in several Catherine Walker pieces, including a coatdress Kate's worn several times.

Kate teamed the look with an $11 Green Chiffon Dupatta by Pakistan based Satrangi (with thanks to Heaven).

And her Zeen Ceramic Drop earrings.

Kate completed the look with her 'greenery suede' Emmy London shoes and clutch.

A brief roundup video from the day.

William and Kate will privately meet British High Commission staff later this afternoon before attending an evening reception at the Pakistan Monument.

I'm not expecting photos from that one, otherwise it's all public engagements.

  3. Wow - Kate has not disappointed. Last night she walked off that plane looking regal and elegant, now she's friendly, approachable, and loving the children in this beautiful, embroidered blue Kurta and trousers by a Paksitani designer. Loving this tour and it's only day 1. Great start to the tour.

  4. She looks so much like Queen Rania with this dress. I'm sure she will wear great dresses in this tour.

  7. I love Kate's outfit, very nice and breezy, lovely colour. What I don't like is William dressing down. That open shirt is too casual IMO.

  8. I think she likes this style! :) It’s probably a great ensemble to work in, kurta and trousers.

  9. The shoes look so dowdy, would make anybody's feet huge and just do not go with the outfit. Shoes are not usually her strong point and I just do not understand why. I loved the nude Rupert Sanderson Malory heels she wore yesterday though.

    1. Catherine does not dress for trend or style. When she is working, Catherine selects her outfits depending on the event and the culture of this involved. Her outfit and her shoes are keeping within the cultural norm of dress and show a respect for her host, without a need to flash in current trends of attire.

    2. I agree with Anon 11:19 here about the shoes. The two different shoes worn with the periwinkle outfit were understated and appropriate for both engagements. (She wore the flats in India on one occasion). While I would have liked to have seen some snakeskin shoes with the green and white outfit, think that Kate was 'doing Kate' and wearing what in her own thoughtful way was a show of respect and yet keeping in her wheelhouse. This isn't the tour to display a new shoe wardrobe. Her dressing has been the same, with a nod to the cultural dress, yet with a Kate twist! I hope we see the arrival dress and the green coat again. cc

  11. This is a beautiful outfit I hope she is not accused of cultural appropriation here. I think the outfit is very tasteful and respectful unlike what the Canadian Prime Minister did on his visit to India which was very different and inappropriate. Kate really looks lovely in this color and the designer made such a beautiful outfit. It is so nice that Kate is featuring a Pakistani designer

I agree, I think it was tasteful that she bridged to it with her arrival outfit. I think to have worn something from her host county on arrival would have been off and appropriation for sure. but now that she is actually there its perfect!

    2. Somethng 'from' her host country? Nothing that she has worn cannot be found worn by Europeans of all cultures on the streets of the UK, trousers, tunics, notch-neck tops, they've been fashionable for years & not confined to Pakistan/India - and if anyone in the world wants to dress up in our National Costumes for fancy-dress parties, they are welcome to! The concept of 'cultural appropriation' is American thing, I find nothing pleasant about it, it divides people & we don't need it in Britain.

  16. The outfit coming off the plane was really lovely, but the stronger blue, followed by the green/cream ensemble are stunning colours on Kate and so appropriate to each event. William's looks have also suited the events they've attended. The open neck linen shirt for a school visit was a good, casual look.

I'm so impressed by the way William and Kate let these Commonwealth visits be an opportunity to showcase whatever the host country selects, rather than making the visits a reflection of their own personal interests (though I love that when they are at home in England, they choose to use their position to emphasize those). It feels respectful of the host countries' culture, while also allowing the host nation to honour their Queen by displaying their best selves.

I'm excited to see what unfolds in the next few days.

Thanks as always for your commitment to blogging through these tours, Charlotte. It's such a lot of work.

  17. They are the very impressive ‘on point’ royals. Clothes, hair, makeup are fabulous. They make it all look so easy and effortless and fun.

Hoping for an all white ensemble with plenty of diamonds,
    Looking forward to more.

  18. Love love this look on Kate - very traditional but with a modern twist - particularly the Catherine Walker ensemble that she wore disembarking from the plane. Well done HRH!

  20. Kate looks divine. Wow. But just curious
Why the need to have her clothes In the “Pakistani theme”?? She looks wonderful. The Queen NEVER does this. Nor would we ever see a female Pakistani official visit England and force herself into a High Street outfit. She would wear her own garb. Kate tried to do this on the trip to India too. Just curious. Seems odd me. Can’t help but wonder if it might offend.

Hi Anonymous, actually her Majesty and The Princess of Wales regularly gave a beautiful nod to the countries they visited. Remember The Queen’s visit to Ireland, Canada, Australia to name a few ... green, red, yellow ... and always a brooch, a shamrock, maple leaf, wattle, the Silver Fern for New Zealand. There are loads of examples, Diana was always paying compliments to her hosts with the way she dressed. Thailand, Pakistan, Brazil, The UAE ... so many occasions. It would never offend ... I remember how thrilled we were when Catherine visited the Opera House in stunning yellow, and how the Kiwi’s loved her Black dress with the silver fern. It’s a beautiful way to honour our countries flag or national colours. Just my thoughts anyway x

      Delete
    3. Oh I agree. A nod to the host country of course...eg a brooch. But that is very very different than wearing the traditional costume of the country You are visiting or some attempted modernized version. I think she looks spectacular. But she would look spectacular either way. I just find it a bit odd. And I suspect the people of Pakistan would be far more interested to see her wear her own British designs! Like I said. I am quite certain a female Pakistani Prime Minister would not arrive in Britain forcing herself into a Zara suit!

      Delete
    4. From what I’ve read on twitter, including replies to the Pakistani government account, people from Pakistan are over the moon to see Kate wearing these designs and none of them has claimed cultural appropriation.

      Delete
    5. I would think that her choice of dress is a nod to the host country as well as cultural/religious modesty. I don't think it would be received well if she were wearing a low cut dress and something that showed a lot of leg--it would likely be viewed as disrespectful. You will notice that all of the women were dressed similarly to Catherine in the pictures. There was still a modern/British twist that made the outfits hers. I for one loved the silhouettes and colors. I thought the looks were great!

      Delete
    6. I have also thought about this and at first I thought it might be a step to far, but once I saw more photos with the local women also wearing variations of this outfit I think it is OK. It would be strange for Kate to wear a traditional outfit if the local were wearing western clothes.
But I agree with you that there is a big difference between wearing a colour, brooch or motive as a nod to the host country and wearing full on traditional clothes.

    7. Are there Pakistanion this blog?I wonder, if she wears midi dresses, and no trousers, like she did in India, would it be shoking?

    8. For comparison, when the Spanish royal visited the UK Queen Letitizia wore a hat, which she would never do in Spain, but she knew it was the custom of BRF so she kept to their dress code.

    9. I think it is not just a question among royalty. All women from Europe and the States/Canada etc. somehow are expected to adapt to Muslim standards - out of respect, as it says -, whereas Muslim women wear Muslim fashion also in Western countries and don't adapt to Western styles. Nobody calls them disrespectful. To me, it feels like a double standard.

  21. Their arrival made all newspapers covers in Pakistan and people seem to be truly delighted with their visit. For me, that’s what makes a tour successful.

I agree with everybody saying that they both are truly regal. Their presence, the clothes, they way they interact with people. It’s so beautiful to see.

The blue outfit is spectacular and photographs so well. I’m not a big fan of the green coat but she looks elegant as well. Looking forward to reading what they did and said too!

  22. Oh my. The blue outfit is just stunning. And as I predicted- she should definitely try to incorporate this kind of pants in her wardrobe. They are very flattering for her silhouette. It’s the perfect mix between elegance and business. The green and beige combo is nice too but much more serious.

  26. Omg I love everything about this! Tha whole outfit and thata what I mean by modest heels. Kate's heels today di not draw attention to the foot. Gorgeous colors on her clothing too.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I prefer the Catherine Walker adaptation again today. It’s expected to give a nod to local fashion, but the beautiful blue number looks like a costume. Of course she’s in lower heels, she’s walking all day.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Seeing Kate in these looks makes me want to see her in some narrow leg trousers for other future engagements... I for one am tired of the skinny jeans and while the wide leg trousers are a nice change I think a narrow leg would be quite complimentary to her.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love this silhouette on Kate. Lovely outfits today.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The blue outfit gives her an energetic and youthful look - one of my favorite looks on her for a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I really love both outfits. With all the women wearing similar designs, it seems very appropriate. Her colors are beautiful -- I never liked her green dresses before but thought she looked wonderful in the green outfit today! I like her shoes, everything. I thought she looked serious yet very pretty and youthful. The style is very flattering, too! The style is not really much different from some of her dresses, especially the green; she just added pants.

  32. One of the many things I find delightful about William and Kate is how they so often respond to things with the exact same facial expressions and mannerisms. Example here is in the picture with the rangers.

    ReplyDelete
  33. A great first engagement of the tour. Love both these looks as well and as others have said, I love the slim trousers and hope she continues wearing them. The green coat is great and can easily be repeated- maybe for St. Patrick's Day next year? From what I can see of her evening reception look, it's another win!

    ReplyDelete
  34. She’s breathtaking in the blue. The green coat dress looks like all her other coat dresses, but I’d love to see her re-wear the cream trousers at home some time. It’s a great style for her and she doesn’t seem to wear it much. I think the Queen prefers the royal ladies to wear dresses, and Catherine mainly does so, but sometimes slacks are more appropriate and I feel the wide-legged ones she’s chosen so far have swallowed her a bit. (While I’m wishing, I wish she’d get a pair of non-skinny jeans.) But most of all, I’m impressed with the way both William and Catherine have grown into their roles with dignity yet without losing their sense of fun. I think William had the right idea, asking for the time to settle into their married life and family life before taking on the full-time duties, and HM was wise to allow it. They are just perfect now.

Love the periwinkle on her and like that she re-wore the earing's. the green was great on her as well and liking that re-wear as well. been really liking the accessories as well, love those suede green shoes and purse. Don't remember the 2 beige suede shoes from before, maybe that's because they are very not memorable. But what I'm really loving is that Satrangi, its beautiful and I want one!! I'm hoping she gets to be really comfortable and liking this style of pant!!! really love William in this relaxed shirt and dark pant with the suede shoes!

  36. That periwinkle on Kate is Amazing!! I'm just gobsmacked at how stunning Kate looks, their royal yet accessible carriage & this tour! Detailed words fail me! :0 xx

  37. Kate always looks really good in jewel tones. The periwinkle is particularly beautiful on her. I suspect her green CW "tunic" will likely see another airing in the future as a coat dress. I like her less expensive options of accessories, too.

I wondered about the English too, there was English written on the signs and boards, wasn't sure if it was just for their arrival or how much English is spoken in Pakistan?

    2. If there is one thing that the Empire did really well was spread the use of English. In all the Commonwealth nations the majority of the population, especially in a cosmopolitan city like Islamabad, will be able to speak English.

  39. She has looked so beautiful in every look so far this tour. I’m noticing a change in both of them. It feels like they’ve really stepped into a more “senior royal” role. They both seem more regal somehow. While I think Kate looks beautiful, her outfit choices seem a little “mature” to me. They remind me of some of Camilla’s outfits (which isn’t a bad thing!) they just look more suited to someone a bit older than Kate. I think this is what’s giving off more of a senior royal/Queenly vibe. Just my two cents.

  40. Oh, my goodness! Absolutely stunning; breathtaking -- every outfit she has worn here. One could fall in love with Pakistan for the culture and the way they dress, alone! This is absolutely beautiful, stylish; elegant and dignified. I just LOVE it! And the story of Diana and the doctor, whom I think she really loved, behind all this is terribly bittersweet. I just know William and Catherine are making a huge diplomatic impact for Britain. Well done, them!!

  41. Both of these outfits work well and look good. The Duchess has looked terrific from day one. The u tube of the Princess of Wales and her visit was very interesting.
