"It's Been Really Special": The Cambridges Bid Farewell to Pakistan

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge concluded their five-day official visit to Pakistan today.

The trip concluded on a high note, with the couple speaking to the media and attending engagements. Behind the scenes, aides and officials from the British High Commission were presented with an incredible logistical challenge last night when the couple and members of the press were forced to return to Lahore en route to Islamabad due to inclement weather conditions. It meant several engagements had to be cancelled or rearranged, and last minute accommodation and security arrangements were put in place.

More from Rebecca English who was on RAF Voyager with the Cambridges:

'They touched down in Pakistan's capital at around midday - hours later than expected after a terrifying electrical storm forced their pilot to abandon the first attempted landing and overnight in Lahore.
Last night, British High Commission officials sprang into action to find the couple a hotel room, along with their entourage, security team and around fifty journalists - almost 100 rooms in all.
The couple privately thanked their RAF pilots and praised royal aides and British High Commission officials for coming up with an emergency backup plan so quickly and with minimal fuss.
William also personally insisted that journalists travelling with himself and Kate, who were also on the flight, came with them to the hotel and were found a bed for the night. 'The Duke's immediate reaction was that nobody was being left behind, we were all in it together. He was adamant about that,' a source said.'

Logistical changes meant a visit to Kyhber Pass, on the border with Afghanistan, had to be cancelled. The trip had been planned as one of the last engagements of the tour, not only to highlight the important strategic military location and trade route, but as an opportunity to see another important element of the country. Instead, the Duke and Duchess undertook a private engagement in Lahore before returning to Islamabad. Local reporters revealed they actually returned to SOS Children's Villages because they enjoyed their first visit so much. William was wearing a bracelet, which he was likely given by one of the children there.

They concluded the tour surrounded by adorable puppies at Islamabad Army Canine Centre.

Before Prince George was born, Lupo was the Cambridges' first "baby". When they were living in Wales, we saw the cocker spaniel with the couple on beaches near Anglesey for walks. The royal family absolutely adore dogs, so this was a very fun one to wrap up with.

The Duke and Duchess took golden Labrador puppies Sky and Salto for a walk.

People reports:

'The royals were at the Army Canine Centre in Islamabad, which mirrors the U.K. Defense Animal Training Centre in the English Midlands. In a relationship that goes back a decade, Britain has been helping the Pakistan Counter Improvised Explosive Device program as it aims to take on the ongoing security challenges of the region.
Part of that alliance with the U.K. is the breeding and training of dogs to identify explosives. Pakistani officers say the dog program has been a huge success, finding 19 tons of explosives and 700 homemade bombs in the past three years. Bomb incidents have fallen 30 percent since 2015.'

They were shown training areas and discussed the successful impact the dogs have made.

Some of you have been suggesting we'll see another addition to the Cambridge household. My money's on a pet Labrador sooner rather than later :)

Afterwards, the couple briefly spoke to media outlets who had accompanied them throughout the trip. William said: "The whole week we have been hearing about security in Pakistan and it’s really brought home to Catherine and I the importance of the relationship between the UK and Pakistan. A lot of lives have been lost by the Pakistanis in securing large parts of this country over the years and those sacrifices from the Pakistanis should be acknowledged. It’s been a huge, huge undertaking for them. Actually, what happens here in Pakistan directly correlates to what happens on the streets of the UK. We are involved with the Pakistanis for a very good reason: it will actually keep people safe back in the UK."

The Duchess recalled the turbulent departure from Lahore: "I think it was quite an adventure really, it was pretty bumpy up there. But we were looked after so wonderfully by the RAF who did a great job liaising with everyone and got us home safely, so we are hugely grateful to them."

The full interview is included in the video below.

The Duchess also spoke exclusively to CNN's Max Foster at SOS Children's Villages yesterday: "I think William and I really wanted to come and see an SOS Children's Village like this. There are so many vulnerable women here but they really use their positivity. The support the village here provides them really to support and protect the next generation. The children in their care and give them the best possible start to their future lives." Regarding the visit, Kate said: "It's been fantastic, we've seen a lot of Pakistan. There's been a huge variety. It was amazing seeing some of the geography, but then to see some of the community activities like this has been really special."
A departure video.

It's been fascinating to learn more about Pakistan throughout the tour; the causes, culture, people and traditions. The Palace and British High Commission organised a beautiful itinerary despite security challenges. It was Kate's first Commonwealth tour in over three years, and I very much hope it marks the first of regular visits across many member nations in the years to come. The links between the monarchy and the Commonwealth are so precious, it's vital to continue those relationships. We saw the couple follow in Diana's footsteps with poignant moments along the way. I think Kate was particularly touched by the work of SOS Children's Villages. Supporting the most vulnerable children ties in perfectly with her work at home. I was so pleased to hear Kate give a speech and her first tour interview. Hearing from the royals directly adds so much context to overseas trips. They received a wonderful welcome in Pakistan. Someday George will visit and retrace his parents' footsteps; that sense of continuity is something I love about the monarchy.

Sartorially, Kate embraced traditional looks with an array of shalwar kameez, kurta, dupatta and other pieces from local designers such as Maheen Khan and longtime favourites Catherine Walker and Jenny Packham. The majority of Kate's looks were bespoke with accessories and shoes from her own collection and Pakistani brands. We saw several shades of green honouring the country's flag, along with periwinkle blues, white and black pieces. It was a treat to learn about new designers and to see the styles on Kate. Which pieces were your favourites? Today's first look and the show-stopping Jenny Packham gown take the crown for me.

For her final looks of the day, we saw ensembles featuring pieces from several designers and brands. For the departure from Lahore, Kate wore a gorgeous black and white embroidered kurta by Pakistani fashion designer Élan. It was worn with matching white trousers.

Kate carried her Smythson Black Panama East/West tote.

And accessorised with a pair of her earrings, thought to be the Accessorize Filigree style.

After much searching, it's been determined the new J Crew pumps Kate has been wearing during the tour are the Lucie pumps (a big thank you to Kate's closet who discovered they are also known as the 'Colette'). The $220 D'Orsay suede pumps are available at J Crew (25% off with code BUNDLEUP).

Kate changed from her kurta to the Beulah London Papilio jacket from their Autumn/Winter 2014 Collection. It's possible Kate's had the piece for several years.

The Duchess also changed into a pair of £195 Russell & Bromley Xpresso crossover flats in black.

A huge thank you to Andrew Parsons, Stephen Lock and all the photographers who provided amazing photography every day. I also want to sincerely thank everyone who followed on the blog and commented, and from those on the ground in Pakistan who shared background information and local excitement.

  2. I wonder in regard to an unexpected overnight stay somewhere during a royal tour, especially one with this much security involved, how is that facilitated? Do they just contact the local Holiday Inn and inquire about availability? :) Seriously though, would there have been a contingency accommodation in place as part of the entire planning of the tour?

From what I can tell from the two photographs posted so far, I'm really loving what Kate is wearing today, especially the second ensemble. She really has looked so great this entire tour, but I think this black and white look is my favorite next to the blue she wore upon arrival.

    1. They absolutely had a contingency plan in place, possible 2, in addition to the worst case scenario of staying overnight on the grounded plane.

I’m sure the hotel had a full security sweep started before they even landed back in Lahore. The more difficult issue would a last minute securing of the route their vehicles took, but the route would have been determined in advance of their first arrival in Lahore. My best guess is the local police shut down streets and may have even shut down 2 possible routes.

  3. I wonder if last look of this tour is the best. Tailoring is exquisite, black and white never goes wrong and shoes makes me jealous.
What a shame that it's final day. I was impressed by outstanding views, hospitality of inhabitants, moving stories from villages, hospital and attitude which Duke and Duchess showed. They were truly interested and passionated in every place. And least but not last I admire Kate's wardrobe during all tour. Every outfit was perfectly fitting to occasion, representing culture of Pakistan but connecting traditional way of dress with Kate's own style. I love how she mixed pakistan labels with her trusted designers as Packham and Walker. For me it was really big win in every level.

The couple seems more professional(they are always) and more serious and the duchess seems tired but calm and confident. Thanks Charlotte for the coverage and the accompagning informations and hope that your passion for this blog stay strong.

  6. I have a feeling we will see the effect of this tour on Kate’s wardrobe for years to come. Not that she would be wearing a Kruta in the UK (even though it is super flattering on her figure). But seeing how regal, elegant and comfortable pants can look if cut and accessorized in the right way might just encourage her to try it more often.

    2. I'm curious to see if/how she modifies any of the outfits to wear back in the UK. The ombre top will work as it is as a dress, but I'd like to see her rework some of the others, like Diana used to do.

    3. I hope you're right, Rachel. I would LOVE to see Kate wear pants more often. Not skinny jeans, not super wide leg trousers, not more culottes. But pants, regular or slim cut as the pants she has worn on this tour.

    4. She does look gorgeous in those slim pants but I know for me I actually prefer the comfort of skirts or dresses over pants unless I am in jeans for doing errands, and casual activities at home. It s comfort preference.

    5. Absolutely! I said the same in an earlier post from this tour - I hope we see Kate in this style of pants from here on. Pam, you summed it up perfectly with the no skinny jeans, no super wide leg trousers, no more culottes :)

This tour for me has been amazing. I think it is the most relaxed I have seen these two on one of their tours and I greatly admire how they have grown into their roles over the past eight years. I think the UK will be in very good hands for years to come.

Though I am not much into the fashion, this tour was a feast of beautiful, brightly colored clothes. I thought Kate looked great at every engagement and if I could I would dress in these types of beautiful, flowey clothes every day. My favorites were the arrival outfit, the Jenny Packham gown, and the simple embroidered top from yesterday.

I hope their trip home is a safe one and I'll bet their kids cannot wait to see them. Thanks for the tremendous coverage as always. Pakistan is really a beautiful region of the world.

I hope when Kate goes home the trend of the lower heels and flats that she wore on the tour is the "next thing" to strike her fancy because she looks great in them! She's so tall that flats and lower heels often make her look more approachable. They are also less stressful on her feet.

I also hope she buys a lot of slim leg trousers like she wore on the tour. They're more flattering than the pants she wears regularly in the UK.

As for today's outfits I liked both of them but the black and white embroidered outfit was really gorgeous.

  18. What a nice ending to a beautiful tour!! I LOVE the black and white embroidered kurta, Kate looks amazing and very casually chic. That bag is a must have, I want it!! The thing I like most about the last look is first, the shoes (great flats), but second how it is classic Kate to pull together her separates, and recycle something she already has with something new to create a look. She is always polished and effortlessly put together whether she is on tour, at an event, or traveling. I don't know what more any of us can say about William and Kate and this tour that hasn't already been said many times by many people. The success of the tour speaks for itself. Pakistan is a beautiful country as are its people!! Beaming with pride for Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and for William and Kate and a job well done. cc

  19. Just a tremendous tour and I'm sorry to see it end! Kate looked lovely throughout as did William for that matter. It would be great to see her lean into some of these same looks once back home. The final black and white would work very well along with the flats. My favorite still remains the turquoise and gold from the mosque visit and the green Jenny Packham. Some great pictures to remember this tour especially from yesterday's visits to the mosque and the tea party. Bravo to William for being calm during the flight and for looking out for everyone too.

I really like the black and white embroidered morning outfit except I did not like the nude shoes with it, the black flats she later switched to would have been perfect. The more I look at the departure outfit the more I like it, was not sure of the coat effect at first. I really like her in the slim pants, really hoping that she realized how comfortable they are and how incredibly flattering they look on her and that she continues to wear them when she gets home. I think this was such a successful tour not only for fashion but for diplomatic reasons. I think they completely knocked it out of the park in every way. I'm bummed its over!

  21. I'm delighted that the tour was such as success, and enjoyed the pictures and the fashion. I do have a nit to pick, though. WHY do William and Harry use "I" when they should use "me"? (example: "it’s really brought home to Catherine and I..") Were they not taught "subject" vs "object" in English grammar classes? A Disappointed Yank

    1. Anon 17:16 -- that's so funny. It also makes me crazy. When I first heard Harry say that, I hoped Meghan would correct him. It's so easy -- you just take out the "XXX and" part and you'll know whether to use "me" or "I."

      Delete
    2. I noticed that, too, 17:16; however, it's misused so often that few know which to use anymore. Perhaps not in the UK, but national broadcasters don't get it right any more either. Don't get me started on who and whom or a number of other points of usage. Sigh.

    6. No, it is not correct British grammar, or anywhere else where English is spoken. “Catherine and I” is correct when they are the subject of the sentence; when they are the object of the sentence, the correct usage is “Catherine and me.” You’ll get it right every time if you mentally remove “Name and” from the sentence. You wouldn’t say, “This trip has been wonderful for I,” so you don’t say, “It’s been wonderful for Catherine and I.” And Meghan doesn’t correct Harry because she makes the same mistake, consistently.

  22. Thank you for your coverage of this tour. It was wonderful to learn so much about the country and people of Pakistan.

Charlotte, who was the man directly behind the Duchess, wearing a backpack, as they boarded the plane to return home to the UK? I don’t often see someone trailing behind Royals so closely as they say their goodbyes on the tarmac.

Also, the Duke was wearing a friendship bracelet that you could see as he made his final goodbye wave before entering the plane. Do you think that could have been from this morning’s private engagement?

I think that's exactly where William's bracelet came from. I'm hoping KP might release more on the private engagement if possible, although it may have involved a very sensitive issue. It was a tough one for aides as this morning and travel changes meant a lot of last minute rearranging. They did a great job, and ending with puppies was perfect (I am a major lifelong dog lover :))

They seem like they have a solid friendship between them and she is growing into her role so well, with grace and humility. 25. The last fashion statement of the tour was the best for me. The simple black and white structured fit really evoked who Kate is in her fashion choices. It was so chic and sophisticated while maintaining a professional vibe. I absolutely love
Kate's hair when it falls naturally without a professional touch up as it appears in the departing photos. It will be very interesting to see if in the future we see any of her custom made clothing from this trip reworked into future dressing.

  27. Those slim pants should definitely go into her regular wardrobe. Why hasn’t she tried suit pants before?
I think it’s fascinating how different her whole demeanour seemed compared to her other tours. She definitely looked way more senior and business. Her fashion choices this tour make the change in the Cambridge’s role very visible. These are not just glamorous, pretty and young royals but the next crown prince and his wife. The style might be a bit mature in my eyes but she can stick with it for years to come (much like the Queen at a certain point). My only wish would be, that she would go all out on evening occasions. Her Majesty’s vault is notorious and the Queen wore fantastic and elegant evening wear in her younger days. Maybe Maxima could give her a short call on that topic.... (a girl can dream...)
I also think that both the Cambridge’s and the Sussex‘s have set a precedent with their tours for the future. William and Kate will undertake more stately, political (and stiff) engagements while Harry and Meghan will attend more playful and relaxed (but mostly charity) engagements. It’s a smart split that reflects their roles perfectly.

    1. I would leave out the stiff and political adjectives. Kate and Will can be playful and relaxed. We saw that on this trip. Both recent royal tours underscored more affordable fashion which in light of the countries they are visiting is smart. Save the tiaras for the Buckingham state dinners for visiting VIPs.

I predict the monarchy will get smaller by the time William becomes King. I doubt the UK treasury will be able to support such large fertile extended family. People will be tightening their belt and so will the monarchy in the coming decades as the wealth gap widens. Not enough money and too many things to fix and fund I’m afraid.

    2. The monarchy should get smaller right now, just like all other monarchies. I’m all for charity work but if all a member of a RF is going to do is visit charities or raise money for a given cause they can do it without being funded by taxpayers.

I saw plenty of positive comments from the Press about how William had come back in the plane to see how they were doing after the storm and how he joked with them.

  31. There are so many aspects of this tour to comment on. But one thing that really stood out, especially with today’s comments from journalists, is how W&K seems to have found a way to work with the media corps, at least on tour.
Lets not forget that it wasn’t always the case. I remember reading a piece by a royal reporter after their Australia tour (if I remember correctly). Explaining how difficult it was to report on people you actually never get to speak to.
And during their India/Bhutan tour there was (almost) mutiny under the royal reporters because William refused that they join them on the hike up the mountain to the abbey.

I guess the W&K we see now would still not go on a hike with the whole press pack, but they would communicate it in a different way than they did way back.

Like most people they are getting better and better at their job as they gain experience and it is fascinating to watch.

    1. I agree with your point on the relationship with the media. I have followed Charlotte's blog since Will and Kate were married and I can remember lengthy debates about how Will and Kate needed to learn that the media is a necessary part of what they do and the sooner they built and positive working relationship with them the better. There was much criticism of how they had treated the media and shut them out. So I think Will's interaction with the media on this trip was a welcome change and will stand them in good stead going forward.

I also think that it is a difficult tour to do because of security reasons, so they couldn't be seen like they could be in a place like Canada, Australia, Bhutan...

      What I DID enjoy though:

      A) The little village of Lahore. I thought the people were delightfully unashamed of their star-struck-edness and it was adorable. I thought their village was beautifully colorful, their dress was beautifully colorful and that they spoke an "ancient" native language was also really, really cool.

      B) I got to see people in Pakistan that I would not have thought lived there from my VERY LIMITED experience with Pakistani people. There were dark haired, dark eyed people, blue eyed, blonde haired people, dark skin, olive skin, fair skin and a everything in between. This was interesting to me because I had experience with only one Pakistani look. It made me realize for the billionth time, that we really are a melting pot world with all types of hair color, eye color skin color and variations of language. It filled my heart.

      C) Last, I really enjoyed seeing the house where single mothers made a welcoming, loving home for orphans. VERY SPECIAL. Wish we could have seen more. These women are not waiting for a miracle they ARE the miracle. I have the utmost admiration for people who get in and "do".

I think William said it perfectly that the people who have tried to keep stability in Pakistan, need to be praised for their diligence. Maybe one day that diligence will pay off and we will be able to see high profile people visit and do/be seen more.

    4. I think C captures the situation. Read the comment above. I thought the dogs were great fun though! But unfortunately worldwide more people experience SOS moments, than fun...

    5. I feel the opposite as well. William and Kate seemed very at ease. Tammy, while maybe you were disappointed by parts of the tour, I think you completely encapsulated, extremely well, the entire intent of this tour. This tour had a broader stroke and was meant to showcase a country, its people, and its culture, the actual one that exists every day outside of the media image that is portrayed the majority of the time. I think your A, B, and C, are spot on as the take-aways for this tour. This tour wasn't about highlighting specific individuals and their successes, it was about a highlighting a diverse country with functioning organizations that fight every day to maintain their country, the unsung heros. It was also nice to hear reported that with the change in plans, William and Kate returned back to SOS to spend more time with the children. Now that the door has been opened, I think William and Kate will return perhaps with a more focused tour in mind. cc

    6. No, I was not disappointed by this tour at all. It was a total success and did everything it was planed to do, which is to promote Pakistan and the UK-Pakistan relationship. I also prefer one-week tours, because anything more is just too much and interest declines.

    7. This tour was different and very difficult because of the security reasons. I suppose the whole team had instructions about the risks in Pakistan, about the possibility of dangerous situations and what to do or not to do. Probably the engagements were limited and shorter. This could have been a kind of protection. Security first.

Kate & William were asked to go there. And they did it! CHAPEAU!
They took the risk and visited this country. They were burdened with the safety precautions all the time. I think the people of Pakistan will honor them for this.
They did a good job. They were sincere, focused, friendly, empatic, joyful, humble and relaxed. Very professional.

I'm very glad that they could return home safely.
And I'm sure they missed their kids. For the first time the kids had to live 5 days without their parents. Now, they are all together and will enjoy a happy Family-Weekend.
      WELCOME BACK, Kate and William.

THANKS for the informations in this Blog, Charlotte and for the interesting comments coming from the whole globe.

  34. Thank you, Charlotte, for writing such a great blog. I love the fashion aspect of it, but you put so much more into every post! A great cultural learning experience for us all. I hope the flight home was smooth. I am a very nervous flier, so I can only imagine how horrible the flight yesterday was. The color choices for her tour wardrobe were gorgeous. I hope you do a poll!

    Hope from USA

  35. I have loved her wardrobe on this tour.

Except this last look. Something is off with the length of the hem of the coat vs the hem of the dress. Or maybe it is the way it seems to be joined together when the coat flares open? It is not terrible, but something about it bothers me. I love the coat’s neckline and back - very nice tuxedo effect.

    1. The tunic she’s wearing under the coat just doesn’t seem to be hemmed properly. It’s kind of bunched up. That may be the problem.

  36. Thank you for the wonderful coverage of the tour. Catherine looked wonderful and I really enjoyed seeing her embrace the local style. I have to say one of the things that I enjoyed most was William and how happy he seemed to be there and how relaxed and engaged they both seemed at each event.

  37. Thank you for the amazing coverage of the tour! Kate and William both looked happy and in their element throughout the tour. I think my favorite outfits were the second look (purple) and the final look with the embroidery.

  38. Thanks Charlotte for taking us through this amazing tour. Will and Kate are true royalty, showing such respect for their host country, the press, and the staff. This is how a royal tour should be done. They both seamed so natural and relaxed in the interactions with each other and everyone else. The fashion was impeccable, honoring several local designers. I loved this tour!

  39. Penny, K&W may have been uncomfortable leaving their children at home, especially little Louis. I was hoping for some "women in technology" or women as local artisans visits, but that may not have been possible. I don't think we were shown who was invited to the reception, so we missed seeing important women leaders, if there were any. Very much enjoyed the hospital visit, seeing how well cared for the children were. I enjoyed the cricket playing!! Was more than a little glad that they plane carrying them during the lightning strikes was piloted by an expert.

I really liked watching Kate's interview. Her shyness still comes through at being focused on intensely and there is something endearing about it. I love how William stands back and watches his wife speak, having not been raised in royalty and not raised knowing every single "do" and "don't", in admiration. His body language feels like he is helping her learn her role and also there for mentoring and protection. They are SUCH a cute couple and I love watching them grow into their role as future king and queen. They are so un-celebrity-like and it's something I really admire about them.

    2. I had the exact same reaction Tammy! William is a strong support for her in this regard. Love them and what an incredible future King and Queen they will be. Kate's evolution has been intentionally slow and steady.

As far as fashion the green Jenny Packham gown was absolutely incredible. I cannot wait to see it again. She was a vision.

Charlotte, your coverage was spectacular. I enjoyed every day and found it to be educational in a way I had not expected.

  43. If your plane is full of British citizens and you are a prince, do you think maybe it was your obligation to make sure everyone was taken care of for the night. And not something extraordinary that William did? I'm sure his staff was right on it and made sure to give William credit. I'm not being critical, but I think it is common sense.

Meanwhile, I agree with those who think the tour was "basic". Let's take some walks in some beautiful landscapes, retrace some steps of my mum's, and acknowledge folks who take care of the most vulnerable, participate in some sport, see the most religious place, and we'll have a night out with the richest folks in the land.

It is what it is. I don't think they did anything "wrong". I'm just not sure what the British taxpayer gets out of it. Perhaps someone will enlighten me.

    1. What does the British taxpayer get? I doubt we get very much financial benefit, but I don't think that is the purpose of such visits. The royal family provides the "glue" that holds the Commonwealth together and that organization benefits many people.
I think the Duke and Duchess are great ambassadors for this country.
I have been "following" the royal family since my 12th birthday--the day the Queen married. giving me a day off school and several books about them.
Thank you Charlotte for all your work

    2. After the Sussex tour and the Cambridges India tour I have spend a lot of time thinking about the point of these tours.
The best explanation I found was given by Rhianon Mills from Sky.
“They are a mutual backslapping exercise with great photo opportunities for Pakistan, and a chance for the UK government to show where our aid budget is being spent on worthwhile projects.”
A royal tour is not so much doing things as showcasing stuff, I think.

    3. What do British taxpayers get of any other tour?

    4. It’s a constitutional monarchy. What we saw is pretty much what the royals do at home and abroad. Lots of speeches, cutting ribbons, unveiling, giving out medals, visit hospitals, places of worship and charities, and attending fancy state parties. They advocate for those who can’t and highlight important causes - while most of the time staying in the safe lane. Diana, the princess who dared and Charles, the early environmentalist, broke that mold a bit.

      Diana

They are not there to be a statesman or woman, negotiate trade deals or peace talks. Their whole itinerary was vetted by the countries involved and we get what we see.

Not being a British citizen, I cannot enlighten you, sorry. I just wish we (in my country) had anyone who could represent us with such dignity. I think representing one's country, keeping/creating diplomatic relations, meeting local people, visiting hospitals, schools etc.is a really important stuff and some countries are not as lucky as the UK in this respect. I know what I get out of my present "representatives": a humiliating sense of shame. I'd gladly send some of my taxpayer money to the Cambridges to support some of their "basic" tours if I could.

    6. Florida Moxie, You say, "I'm just not sure what the British taxpayer gets out of it." (the tour). The British taxpayer really wasn't expected to receive anything. This trip was at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Britain heads the 53 countries in the Commonwealth. The tour was to bolster Commonwealth relations and showcase the geography and people of Pakistan. The official word from the Commonwealth Office was, "The Duke and the Duchess will focus on endorsing the country as a “dynamic, aspirational and forward-looking nation" When interviewed, William also stated that this tour is of importance to the more than one million Pakistanis living in Great Britain.

You sound judgemental throughout your comment and that is a shame. Will and Kate are doing meaningful work.

  45. Thank you for the marvellous coverage of this tour, Charlotte. The background information you gave was exceptionally thorough and interesting.

Re William and Kate - I've never enjoyed watching them more! Humility and genuine interest marked their interactions with others, and I thought that the gift of friendship within their marriage was evident on numerous occasions. They showed a maturing sense of their future roles while also coming across as youthful and having fun.

And from arrival to departure, Kate's outfit choices were perfect.

    A royal tour to remember...

  46. Thank you, Charlotte, for all of your work covering this lovely tour. It must have been extra challenging to research with so little known ahead of time about their engagements for the day. Your work is appreciated!

The tour was wonderfully done. It’s a shame they weren’t able to complete all of their engagements, but I am thankful everyone was safe and what sounds like a very scary experience! With all of the security requirements, rescheduling would likely not be an option. It will give them something to look forward to on future visits!

I love that they went back to SOS with their unexpected time in Lahore. Such a wonderful program!

I do like, too, that William worked to help the press crew feel attended to and safe in the scary situation. And Kate’s understatement about the “adventure” and focus Instead on the people who helped bring them through safely was lovely. Calm and joyful are words that seemed to keep coming up throughout this tour, and it speaks so well of them. They have definitely shared serenity and joy fullness!

  47. Isn't a tour part of the "job"? I hope I can be educated about it, but doesn't the host country request it and then it is worked out what places/sites to visit? I think K&W had a difficult task and handled it well. As far as tourism, it helped but it would have been good to include some cities.

    1. Alison, something I only realised with the Sussex tour to South Africa, is that no, a State Visit Is on the invitation of the host country - those are done by the Head of State, or these days Charles and Camilla. Visits to Aus/NZ/Canada os also at the invite of the government as members of the Royal Family of those countries.

Visits to other countries are at the request of the foreign office in the UK and the itinerary is set up by the High Commission in the country. The government of the host country don’t necessary have anything to do with it.

But you are right that it is part of their job. Which is one reason why I liked the fact that this tour was more focused on the UK’s interest in Pakistan that the Cambridge interests. It should not be Bill and Cathy Cambridge on holiday.

  48. Well I have to say I loved everything about this tour. From the fashion to the cultural insights. I am an avid traveller and I must admit Pakistan was never on my radar because as others have said, what we have heard here in the West is mostly associated with terrorism. I had no appreciation for what a beautiful and warm country it is. This is why I love these tours and this blog.

I really liked all of the Duchess outfits on this tour and in particular the jade green she wore to the mosque was exquisite. The bold but simple pattern and then the delicate gold trim along the edges was timeless elegance. A headwrap so suits Katherine. Just beautiful.

However, what impressed me even more on this tour was William. So many moments...the photos of him sipping tea from a plastic tea cup at the cancer hospital, him putting his hand on the back of a small child as Katherine reads a story to a group of children, to him coloring with a patient at the cancer hospital...all give us a glimpse of the type of hands on father he is. I laughed to myself when I saw him pretending to sip tea from the pink plastic tea cup and thought "Charlotte you have trained your father well....!". And then the comment by the reporters of how Will treated them when they had to turn the plane around and return to Lahore. Reaching out to the media to ensure they are looked after may seem like common sense but the fact the media commented on it means that it was a gesture that they appreciated. As RachelZA said....this is steps ahead of the relationship that Will had with them even a few years ago and shows alot of growth on his part. It seems to me that William has taken the best of all the teachings from his grandmother the Queen, his father and his mother. I look forward to following his work for years to come.

Charlotte I will echo the sentiments of many others here....thank you for continuing all of your hard work and creating a positive community for all of who enjoy following the life and style of the Cambridges and the Sussexes!

  49. I don't really get the dresscode of the tour. If official reprrsentatives from Pakistan come to UK to represent their country, their wear the best Pakistan national clothes. Then British royals come to Pakistan and instead of wearing the best from western fashion, they dress in local fashion.Although all the dresses are very nice, it seems a bit costume-like for me. Off course I understand aspects like covering legs and arms in general, covering hair for mosque visit - it's respect to the culture. But it can be done with western clothes too.

    1. It's soft diplomacy.winning the country they are visiting over .now they can't start negotiating trade deals can they..it's the job of the royals to do this..show up, cut ribbons, give away prizes, politically neutral speeches and highlighting charities.wearing salwar is nothing costumey..it's basically a long tunic with pants.camilla and another women in West wear so many outfits Like this so not a great deviation from what she normally wears. Had they been wearing burqa or saree now that would have been costumey.

    2. I think a few things to keep in mind is that Kate didn’t HAVE to dress in local clothes, she WANTED to. As you say she could have met the requirements by adapting her western clothes.
On the other hand, she wouldn’t have been able to wear her regular “royal engagement wardrobe” because even though it is very modest her legs are not covered. So if she had to replace her regular outfits with basically maxi dresses, which she would never wear to work in the UK, why not go all out and wear what the women around her wear?
And in the process she actually still showed off UK designers, there are more than just coatdress designers in the UK.

But most of all my take on Kate’s personality is that we her advisors tell her that she at least need to cover her legs, Kate would come back and ask not what is the minimum requirements, but what would make the locals the most happy.

And lastly it is such a flattering style on her maybe she ordered one outfit, fell in love with it and decided she wants more. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I would have.

I would personally like to thank Charlotte for the excellent coverage of this tour. Well done as per usual, but never taken for granted, just so you know.

I have found learning a bit about Pakistan both interesting and enriching. Whilst I can see that there are some very beautiful hotels available (!) I don't think that my next holiday will be in Islamabad just yet. However, this tour drew my attention to a beautiful part of the world that due to war and unrest has affected local people so much and has also removed the opportunity for tourism and the economical advantages that could bring for the region.

I have followed William and Kate with great interest (wearing respectful, elegant fashion at all times!) and have really enjoyed seeing them being lovely with people they met and also being immersed with their potentially dangerous task, one that was allocated to them by their government. They are a solid royal team, professional at all times, and they take what comes their way in their stride. Both William and Kate should be commended for this, well done!

  51. I do not know if Charlotte, you are able to post any of this, but for those who follow instagram at all, there is a lovely post @kensingtonroyal, the Cambridges account, showing photos from their second visit to SOS the last day of their tour. In one photo it shows a young girl tying the friendship bracelet onto William's wrist. There is a personal note from Catherine about their visit. It is a place that seemed to have struck a chord with both the Duke and the Duchess. Lovely photos and wonderful moments. cc
