The Duchess Brings Back Classic McQueen for Earthshot Prize Awards

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the inaugural Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony at London's Alexandra Palace this evening.

William and Kate walked the 'green carpet' upon arrival.

Created by Prince William and the Royal Foundation, the Earthshot Prize has led a global search for the most effective and innovative solutions to the greatest environmental challenges facing the planet. The Earthshot Prize has been described as "a truly global event, anchored in London and connecting with finalists and winners all over the world".

A video shared by Victoria Murphy.

The initiative was inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s ‘Moonshot’ programme in the 1960s, which united millions of people around the goal of reaching the Moon.

Kensington Palace said, "The Earthshot Prize aims to incentivise change and inspire collective action around our unique ability to innovate, problem solve and ultimately repair our planet over the next ten years. The Earthshot Prize is based on five ‘Earthshot’ goals: Protect and restore nature; Fix our climate; Clean our air; Revive our oceans; Build a waste free world. Five £1 million prizes will be awarded each year for the next 10 years, providing at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest environmental problems by 2030." The Palace added the event is "celebration of the natural world, focussed on turning the current pessimism surrounding environmental issues into optimism by celebrating the people and places driving change  - the first-ever Earthshot Prize Finalists and Winners."

As part of the effort, a Global Alliance was formed with an array of well-known organisations and foundations, including the UN Environment Programme, WWF, the Green Belt Movement, John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, National Geographic, Jeff Bezos' Earth Fund, Rob & Melani Walton Foundation, and Mike Bloomberg's philanthropies.

Presenter Dame Emma Thompson on the green carpet.

People reports:

'Presenter Emma Thompson said she came in the outfit she wore when she last saw Prince William — her suit and the badge that signifies her damehood.

"On our little notes they said 'Please do not buy anything new for this.' Can you imagine? The relief! So I got my dame suit that I wore when I went to the palace," she shared.

Thompson also showed off a ring that her husband Greg Wise "bought me for 30 bucks in New York" and her vegan sneakers. She spoke about the evening as an opportunity to help counter the hopelessness of issues like food waste, saying, "One of the solutions is going to be here and that makes me happy."

Emma Watson chose a layered white dress crafted from a number of pieces bought in Oxfam.

With the exception of the Duchess, the look of the evening goes to Joana Sanz (wife of Earthshot Council member and footballer Dani Alves). Joana looked like a Grecian goddess in a soft pink gown with draped shoulder detail.

Guests were seated in Alexandra Palace's incredible East Court Theatre.

The intricate set design depicts space and gold leaves representing the Earthshot logo.

More from Town & Country:

'During the ceremony, a short film recorded in the London Eye will be played, in which Prince William says, "We are alive in the most consequential time in human history... The actions we choose or choose not to take in the next ten years will determine the fate of the planet for the next thousand. A decade doesn’t seem long, but humankind has an outstanding record of being able to solve the unsolvable"

The ceremony will feature performances from artists Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, KSI and Yemi Alade, and Shawn Mendes. Coldplay’s performance, from outside of Alexandra Palace, will use energy powered by 60 cyclists.'

The Earthshot Prize Medal is inspired by the iconic 'Earthrise' photograph taken of Earth from the Moon by astronaut William Anders aboard Apollo 8 in 1968. It was selected to reflect the "beauty and fragility" of our planet.

Buckingham Palace turned green ahead of the event.

Prince Charles issued a heartfelt statement in support of Earthshot. A lifelong environmentalist and one of the earliest voices in the fight against climate change, Charles has devoted a significant portion of his life's work to protecting the planet. He wrote:

'I am very proud of my son, William, for his growing commitment to the environment and the bold ambition of the Earthshot Prize.

As a world, we need to come together to inspire, reimagine and build the sustainable future we so desperately need.

Over the coming decade, with future generations in mind, the Earthshot Prize, and its inspirational nominees, will help us find the innovative solutions.

In parallel, through my Terra Carta and Sustainable Markets Initiative, we will work to mobilise the trillions of dollars required to transition the global economy on to a more sustainable trajectory.'

The Duchess presented the award under the Protect and Restore Nature Category. Kate said: "Nature is vital to us all. A thriving natural world regulates our climate, nurtures our physical and mental health, and helps feed our families,' she told the 100-strong audience. For too long, we've neglected our wild spaces and now we're facing a number of tipping points. If we don't act now, we will permanently destabilize our planet and we will rob our children of the future they deserve. Our Earthshot Prize finalists show us, however, that we can by 2030 see the natural world growing, not shrinking, for the first time in centuries."

More from People:

'Announcing the winner, the Republic of Costa Rica, she said that country had showed "that deforestation can be turned around whilst growing your economy." Accepting it, President Carlos Quesada said, "We acknowledge that major conservation is a shared value. We accept this recognition with pride but humility. What we have achieved in this small country in central America can be done anywhere. We will continue recognizing nature as our most valuable asset advancing towards a carbon neutral in a nature positive world."

Moments earlier, co-host Clara Amfo said they'd asked Prince William to "pull a few strings" and ask Kate to present an award. Introducing the Duchess of Cambridge, fellow co-host Dermot O'Leary said, "Thankfully he came up trumps – though I doubt this is what she had in mind when he mentioned date night."

When Kate met Emma :)

As the awards came to an end, William said: "I want to say something to all the young people watching tonight. For too long, we haven’t done enough to protect the planet for your future. But Earthshot is for you. In the next ten years we are going to act. We are going to find the solutions to repair our planet."

The Duke and Duchess speak to winners via video call.

Chatting with guests including the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan who joined the couple for a Generation Earthshot event earlier this week.

A behind-the-scenes photo with Global Optimism co-founder Tom Rivett-Carnac.

As noted by Dame Emma Thompson, guests were asked to choose outfits with sustainability in mind. When Kate had a look through her closet (and one can imagine what a glorious sight that is at Kensington Palace), she decided it was time to bring back the divine lilac Grecian Alexander McQueen gown she debuted a decade ago in Los Angeles for a BAFTA event. It was an incredibly special engagement, and by far the most glamorous Kate had undertaken. Kate was the toast of Tinsel Town as she mingled with the stars.

Whenever we discuss the possibility of repeating gowns, it never fails to feature in your top three choices, and it's easy to see why. It remains timeless, classic and very much a 'princess gown'.

Kate's only alteration was a change of waist belt. Instead of the shimmering piece she wore in 2011, the Duchess chose a pearl beaded style.

Kate accessorised with stunning Kiki McDonough morganite earrings.

Kate sported her Oscar de la Renta Cabrina pumps.

We'll see the Duchess on Tuesday. Kate's due to deliver the keynote speech at an event hosted by the Forward Trust to launch the charity’s “Taking Action on Addiction” campaign.

  1. Yes! This dress is my favorite from her collection. I thought it was retired forever...but here it is. She looks as beautiful as she did 10 years ago. Can't wait to see more updates. Thank you Charlotte.

YES! William looks fantastic! I absolutely love the green velvet blazer. ...and with something being just a little different about Kate's hair (low side part? Keeping one side in front of her shoulder? Can't quite put my finger on it) they look fresh and ready to tackle the world!

  5. I expected that she would rewear one of her older dresses to show sustainability but I thought it would be a green dress like the Alexander McQueen dress of 2012 or the Jenny Packham Pakistan dress. I always liked this lavender dress but at this occasion she looks too summerly in comparison to her husband with a polo neck and dark green velvet jackett. Prince William looks very smart in his outfit.

    3. I love her dress, but she does look more summery than the Duke, and I have to say, while I LOVE his jacket, I think the black turtleneck is kind of a miss. I am not sure what would be better in its place it just looks... odd?

    4. That would have been a lovely repeat as well. It would have looked nice with William’s suit. But I tend to be too matchy matchy.

    5. I do think the lavender with the green is very pretty however, I see your point. When thinking about a different dress, the Erdem Alouette Tiered Floral Silk Gown. comes to mind. I realize that many didn't like it the first time. The floral pattern and the colors would have been nice.

    6. Never liked this dress. A lot of fabric that does absolutely nothing for her or for fashion. Shape is meh colour is nondescript a big so what from me.

    2. I totally agree. Evening wear is not subject to seasons. I’m just going to say it was an amazing, wonderful world changing event and William and Catherine looked wonderful but more importantly it was the event that was the star. Well done William on a greatly, urgently needed topic.

    3. Evening wear is certainly subject to seasons, in terms of colors, fabrics, designs, and embellishments. I have evening wear for fall and winter I would never wear in spring and summer and vice-versa. I think many fashionable women would tell you the same. You will not catch me stepping out in midnight-blue velvet in June or pale-blue silk in December.

      Delete
    4. I agree there is something very winterly about velvet. But I have worn pale blue silk in February. Also soft pink. I think the problem here is not that Kate's dress is too summerly, but that William is definitely winter, high neck and all. In fact the first version of the dress was very cool and breezy and summerly, the new belt gives it a duller, softer, organic and Autumn vibe, that is very appropriate for the event.

Kate is not stealing the glory tonight - solid behind William in this big endeavour.

    2. That’s the problem with having wealthy people who inhabit very large carbon footprint be the MC for saving Earth. Royal or self made wealth, it’s the little people who suffer most.

Right now COP 26 is facing its own “greenwashing” criticism. Not to mention the big corporate donors are none too please with host nation UK right now with the runaround confusion and keystone cops running this show.

  18. I much prefer the silver-based belt. It brings out the cool tone of the dress. The gold makes the dress look a bit tired, they fight each other. Of course, I prefer Kate's hair a cooler brown as well. The red mutes her sparkle. So many women turn toward "red" when grey appears. For some of us winter/summer toned individuals, it must be done with a gentle hand. That said, I like that her dress choice is restrained beauty, this is Williams night. Luv how they respect each other in this regard.

    ReplyDelete

    1. 100% agree with your comment. I don’t like the redder tones in her hair, either. And the dress definitely sparkled more with the previous belt. It just looks a bit dull here. But I’m happy to see this dress again & that she didn’t outshine William on his big night ;)

    2. Agree with all your points Anonymous (op) and Kiwi Gal. The dress looks a bit washed out here without the original belt. I'm also not sure I like Kate's hair like this (color and style).

      Delete
    3. I agree about her hair. I always found that her highlights have a to yellowy touch and that the warmer colour doesn't flatter her. I disagree about the belt. I makes the whole gown less pale which looks nicer on her. I think another big problem is actually the lighting and green of the carpet.

  19. I have enjoyed seeing this dress again and Kate's hair looks amazing. Not only is this a great cause but I also REALLY like the approach - focusing on (and telling people about) the things that are being done to help the planet. It's such a scary thing and I know the environment makes many people very anxious so I think that the way they are approaching this will actually help people's mental health too - so really they're addressing two of their primary causes rather than just one!

  23. They both look fabulous this evening. I too preferred the look from LA 10 years ago (whitish belt, diamond chandelier earrings). However, I suspect she needed a bigger belt. Her waist was impossible small for the wedding and in the months immediately after.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, she was very tiny at the time around her wedding.

      Delete
    2. Well, I'm wondering if this is the belt she wore with her "second wedding dress," to the evening party. If so, it wouldn't be a larger belt, unless it happened to be more adjustable than the lighter-colored belt she originally wore with this dress.

      Delete
  24. I know the post indicates that the only change to the gown was the change in the belt. But it looks to me as though some volume in the torso was reduced. It just doesn't look as blousy as it did 10 years ago. IDK.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love how her hair is styled. I prefer the fitting of the dress this time, but I think I prefer the accessories with the first wearing. Maybe the belt almost blends in more? 36. William and Kate look smashing! Kate is a very thoughtful dresser and aside from rewearing a gown, I think she choose to be subtle and somewhat understated in order that William could stand out. This is after all his initiative and quite frankly a brilliant one. I watched the documentary on the Earthshot yesterday where they gave a synopsis of the initiatives and quite frankly I am amazed that there is so much talent and progress. Congratulations to Costa Rica!! Kate's presentation and speech was so fitting and she and William are both great complements to each other on so many levels!! Kate-I am underwhelmed. I am one of those who wanted to see this one again but I'm afraid it disappointed. Not a fan of the new accessories. Tonight, I wanted the blue Roland Mouret and I want a tiara. It IS the (environment) Nobels, after all! Come on Britain!

    1. Not a tiara event. Not nearly formal enough. There are fewer and fewer occasions that call for tiaras, and this really wasn't one of them. A tiara would have been pretentious, very overdone.

    2. Oh I know! I wasn’t being serious about that part. :) The look just felt flat like it needed a bit more pizazz and hair jewelry of any kind brings some pizzazz. Doesn’t help that I hate those earrings. :-/

  40. That's a lovely dress; I admired it the first time she wore it. However, for this particular event, I think she could have chosen something a bit edgier, more unusual. William did, after all, as did other attendees, and the Duchess looks a bit staid in that quite traditional and rather conservative evening dress. She has some ethnic-inspired dresses and a beautiful black-lace midi-length McQueen (worn to a reception in Paris) that I think might have worked better. I'm also a little taken aback by her hair these days. It's been looking too long and somewhat limp. I think it's time for a cut.

    3. No doubt, but the dress was still not quite right for the occasion.

      Delete
    4. Yes many people say she should have gone for a green dress but with the green stage floor and backdrop during her presentation green would not have stood out.

      Delete
    5. I don't think she needed to wear green, just something less summery and traditional, more interesting. The occasion called for a more imaginative, more creative look.

      Delete
    6. An ivory dress would have looked good against the backdrop. She could have gone with the Barbara Casasola off the shoulder midi (which I've always thought was her 'most edgy' dress) or the Self Portrait Lace Top, Pleated skirt and either would have been great with her green velvet heels (and emerald earrings of course!).

  44. I will no doubt be alone in this, but I've never gotten the "wow" about this dress. I find it utterly uninspired. Having said that, the styling this time has improved it somewhat, and the Duchess is always beautiful. I had been hoping for the green McQueen from the 2012 BBC Sports Awards.

  46. Oftentimes we speak of Catherine's diplomatic dressing. Some have commented that they would have preferred a dress in green or some other color. There's no way for me to know the intention, but there is a language of color. In spirituality, lavender signifies tranquility, easing tension, healing, regrowth and purity. It is also said that because lavender is a blend of blue, red and purple it is a symbol for unity and peace. If true, choosing a lavender dress supports the goals of William's environmental issues.

  47. I was hoping you see a repeat of the bottle green long sleeved McQueen gown she wore when she first emerged from morning sickness when pregnant w George. I thought that dress would have perfect at this event - a “recycle” in green - and have been hoping to see it styled a little differently than in its first wear. The dress she chose tonight is very pretty, but as others said, it’s very summery and didn’t mesh well with Wm’s vibe.

  49. A lot of people mentioned wanting one of her two green dresses, but Kate also presented an award. This color dress popped better with the set background images and floor inside. A green dress would’ve blended in too much, in my opinion. The challenge is posing for photos outside (I do see the point about william’s outfit not coordinating with hers) and also having a dress that works inside as a presenter. Not sure if I’m making sense? Sue

  50. I am very happy about the event. I wish Prince Wiliam would put more about it, the competitors and the winners on their social media outlets, as the BBC content is not easily accesscible outside the UK. And as he is still working on establishing this, it won´t harm to just led the information flood into peoples timelines.
Fashion wise I am so conflicted. I love the idea of his outfit, but somehow he looked a bit frumpy? More 007 vilian than 007 himself? I don't know if it was the fit of the suit or if the velvet and the turtle neck didn't go together? I like the colour of his dinner jacket but it somehow missed the eccentric but relaxed vibe you would expect. Points for effort.
Kate's repeat is gorgeaus and I like the new belt. But somehow both their outfits clashed with each other. I think the explanation that it was summer against winter vibes makes good sense. I also think the lightng and the green of the carpet (which is a horrible and green and completely unneccessary) didn't flatter anybody really. In general I think the outfit was a solid choice though, and while I think her bottle green Jenny Packham or something with long arms and/or black would have worked better with Wiliam's outfit but I am also happier she didn't go the most obvious route by picking green.

The Prince looks very dapper this evening. Yet another very important project they are working on. Exceptional work. Back to the Duchess, some Royal diamonds are always very welcome. Thanks Charlotte. S. ☺

  54. I love it. The soft lavender was perfect against the green of the carpet and William's suit. I love her in green, but a green gown would have been a bit much. Like the Emerald City, or something!

  55. I feel proud of them, what an incredible achievement: they are amazing! William looks very dapper in his green velvet jacket, and Kate looks simply iconic in the gorgeous floaty gown, it's what dreams are made of. Since I saw her wearing the dress in 2011, I think it's been my favourite look for her. Wonderful to see her wearing the dress again. I love her hairstyle too, including the reddish tints. She exudes confidence and self-assurance, looks simply magnificent.

  56. Kate looks very pretty! Love her hair. I’m happy William went for a bolder (for him) look. I didn’t love it honestly. Maybe without the turtleneck. But good for him for branching out.

  57. The shoes were my favorite Cinderella moment here.

Blue would have been a good color too. We are running out of clean water. Will and Kate have many blues to reuse. Throw in some punchy brilliant hues for accent and that’s earth burning. Color can be allegorical and tell a story. I had to laugh though at this Washington Post article.

Not sure if this was what they wanted to convey to the Americans. Perhaps next year, they can take the royal yacht and sail it to America via wind power for the moonshot prize. Now that would be fun. The boat can hold the entire royal press corp. Think of the carbon saving and we can get many fashion shoots and close up interviews of the fab twosome. I bet this would a TV hit.

  58. I would love to have seen Kate rewear her royal blue cold shoulder Roland Mouret dress. I've been waiting for a rewear of that ever since it's first appearance. I think it would have let William be the star and looked good with the leafy green video stage. But, she still looked great and maybe had reasons I know nothing of that made this dress more appropriate. I love how it moves as she walks! It is a very princessy dress!

    1. @IntriguedByRoyals - agreed! This is also one of the gowns I would like to see again (I was hoping this would be the gown for 007 Premiere). For the rewear, she should definitely bling it up (maybe the Queen's aquamarines). That neckline is perfect.

  59. Hi! Love seeing this post. I wonder if the colours were chosen to align with the logo for the event? It looks like Will’s dark green matches the background and Kate’s lilac and gold matches the font/globe? After all, if anyone could show up at this event perfectly matching the logo… it would be them!
