The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay Attend National Service of Thanksgiving & Dedication in Scotland

The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, the Prince and Princess of Wales' new Scottish titles, were in Edinburgh today for a special service at St Giles' Cathedral for a National Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication to mark the Coronation.

It marks the first joint visit to Scotland for the new Duke and Duchess of Rothesay. I still often mistakenly begin posts with 'The Duchess of Cambridge', so it's a nice throwback to still use 'Duchess' when the Waleses are in Scotland.

The Ministry of Defence notes: "They consist of the Crown of Scotland, the Sceptre, and the Sword of State. Made of gold, silver and precious gems, the priceless crown, sceptre and sword of state are objects of immense significance."

Over 700 members of the royal forces escorted the jewels to St Giles' Cathedral.

It marks the first occasion Camilla has been seen wearing the robes since her appointment in June. Underneath, she wore a white Bruce Oldfield design. The ancient Order of the Thistle represents the highest honour of chivalry in Scotland and can only be bestowed by the monarch. We'll see Kate given the order in due course.

Five new pieces of music, including one composed in Gaelic, were commissioned by the King for the service. Charles adores music and is known to take enormous care in choosing pieces for significant events.

More on the musical selections from Buckingham Palace: "The new commissions will join a rich mix of music performed at the Service to reflect Scottish history and culture with performers representative of contemporary Scotland. Balmoral Flourishes, a new commission by composer Paul Mealor (b. 1975), will be performed by The State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry to begin the Service. A Gaelic Psalm by Paul Mealor, written especially for the Service will be sung by Joy Dunlop, in recognition of Scotland’s linguistic heritage.

The Honours of Scotland Ensemble is made up of musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Scottish Ballet Orchestra, all of which His Majesty was Patron as Prince of Wales. Buckingham Palace concluded with: "A new commission by Joanna Gill, A Song of Thanksgiving and Dedication, set in Doric, which is spoken in the northeast of Scotland, will be performed by Scottish mezzo-soprano singer and Patron of the National Youth Choir of Scotland National Girls’ Choir Karen Cargill and instrumentalists and composers The Ayoub Sisters. The piece was composed as a tribute to The Queen as Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, of which Joanna is a graduate."

'King Charles III has been presented with Scotland's crown jewels in Edinburgh in a ceremony to mark his Coronation.

He received the crown and sceptre which form part of the Honours of Scotland. The national thanksgiving service at St Giles' Cathedral will also feature a new sword named after the late Queen Elizabeth.

Three pipers from King Charles' former school, Gordonstoun, played during the final stage of the procession.

The Duchess was elegant in a familiar cobalt blue Catherine Walker coat she first wore for the Commonwealth Day service in 2022. Kate teamed the piece with a Sean Barrett pillbox hat, sapphire and diamond jewels, Rupert Sanderson pumps and a Jimmy Choo clutch on that occasion.

Kate wore the coat again this year for Easter Sunday service at Windsor. Kate styled it with a matching Lock & Co. pillbox hat, Carousel Stella Lapis earrings and Gianvito Rossi 105 praline pumps.

The Duchess wearing the coat today. Of the three times, she's worn the piece I think the styling today might be my least favourite due to the hat (I normally adore Treacy designs) and the necklace seeming perhaps a tad too heavy for the neckline of the coat.

A closer look at Kate's hat in green from Philip Treacy's Instagram page (with thanks to Japanese Ginger via Twitter).

Kate accessorised with the Queen's Japanese Pearl Choker necklace. It's already a piece of significance for Kate -- she wore it for the funeral of both the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II.

The Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker was commissioned by the Queen from a set of the "finest cultured pearls presented to her by the Japanese government". Her Majesty's Jewel Vault notes: "The necklace includes four rows of pearls with a central diamond clasp in a curved shape, each side including three rows of diamonds that join at the top and bottom with marquise diamonds. She made her first state visit to Japan in 1975; the choker was in use by at least 1982. The Garrard book posits that it was inspired by the Queen's new daughter-in-law at the time, and she did notably loan the piece to the new Princess of Wales during a state visit from the Netherlands in 1982. It is only occasionally used by the Queen, in whose collection it still remains." Below, the Queen wearing the piece in Bangladesh in 1983.

Kate also wore Princess Diana's pearl earrings and triple pearl bracelet.

It very much appears Kate wore her cobalt blue suede Rebecca pumps by Emmy London.

At this point, I'm not aware if we'll see additional engagements in Scotland today. If not, we'll see both William and Kate for an afternoon of polo tomorrow.

  1. Kate looks fine, perfectly appropriately dressed for the occasion but I do wish she had changed her accessories a bit.

One of the late Queen’s Scottish themed brooches would have been great. There are at least three thistle ones that I know of plus the Braemar brooch and I think a Cairngorm one. Something new to Kate but also evocative of the Queen’s love for Scotland.

    1. I have to agree, considering the occasion a brooch would of been nice. I would pair Queen Mary's Russian square sapphire brooch with this dress. It would be beautiful and it's not too big. S🙂.

    2. Perhaps those items were not offered to her.

  2. Kate looks…hmmm…just so much blue. I’m with Charlotte, not my favorite look. That hat is too shiny to me. The Easter hat was my favorite. I’m missing her nude pumps..haha. Oh well, she is still stunning even though the outfit for me is a miss. Looking forward to seeing another outfit at Wimbledon. Thanks Charlotte!

  3. Personal preference. I prefer this hat to the one worn at Easter. The neckline of this outfit is deep enough to need a necklace; as this was a necklace of the late Queen, it was appropriate. A brooch would have been nice and not "too much".

  4. I'm perhaps not a great fan of the pearls choker, but apart of that it's definitely the best of the three ways the coat was worn! All thanks to the hat, much better than two previous ones. Zofia

  5. What about the bag?? It's so cute! I do have to agree with Charlotte's analysis, but I do love that bag. I'm thinking what this dress really needs is a pop of color; like red maybe?? Silver might be nice? I don't think the necklace is too big, but the white is just too boring... you don't notice it.
I'm actually really enjoying the hat, I think because its so shiny and patent, which she normally doesn't go for...

  6. I do love that coat and the color is both wonderful on her and an appropriate nod to the Scottish flag, but this seems like an occasion that calls for a new dress (or coatdress.)

Looks like a lovely ceremony. Delightful to see the list of contemporary composers in the mix My goodness, though, that official photo is terrible! Even an amateur with a smartphone would know that a backlit photo would cast unattractive shadows on the subjects, and distort their images.

  8. A very nice rewear today. It's a very strong shade of blue but she looked perfect, really beautiful. That's a lovely hat but I prefer the one she wore with it on commonwealth day. Princess Diana's pearl's are always welcome. Charlotte I'm glad you choose that picture of the late Queen wearing the pearls. It shows how well it hangs on the Queens neck. It doesn't hang the same the same on The Princess of Wales or the late Princess. I wonder does it have to be restrung or is it that it was made for the Queen. It's a lovely piece and looks stunning on the Princess. I'm looking forward to watching the Coronation later. S.🙂.

  9. Kate is such a diplo-dresser! The blue of the Scottish flag, a hat that recalls a feathered Scottish bonnet, and important jewels - without wearing anything too individual that would draw attention away from Charles and Camilla.
Queen Camilla wore one of the Thistle brooches this week, so no need for Kate to wear one too.

  10. This is a pretty look. I love the colbalt blue. I really like the coat. I loved it the first time she wore it with the small pillbox. I didn’t like this look the second time she wore it, maybe it was the pillbox hat, which I normally like them. That one just didn’t look right. (It also seemed to bright for Easter, pastels would have been prettier I think) I don’t love this hat, but I do like it. I like more “tipped” hats, than sort of stuck down on the forehead. I think the necklace doesn’t go with this look either. Too heavy? Too thick in the middle for the space she has available? not sure but it looks a bit off. Love the shoes. The bag with the scallop is pretty too!

  11. Something tells me Queen Camilla gets first pick of all jewels belonging to QE II and that only a sparse amount will ever be loaned out to Catherine. King Charles will want to be quite clear that Camilla is Queen and entitled to every piece of jewelry that belonged to his Mother.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The late Queen was very generous with the jewellery loans to the then Duchess. I would imagine those pieces have been set aside for her use and I would be shocked if the Queen hadn't set jewellery aside for her before she died. She has got a lot more than the Queen gave her daughters in law. The King calls her my beloved Daughter. I'm sure he will be more than happy to supply the jewellery suitable for her position. The collection is vast and the new Queen just added her large collection to it. You have the late Queen's, Queen Mother's who also had a huge collection. Queens Mary Alexander and Victoria. Then you have all the gifts of jewellery received over the years. It is a good sign that the new Queen seems to be going through the vaults and pulling out stuff not seen in years. S.🙂.

      Delete
    2. Dawn, I had not thought of that, but of course the emphasis will be on the new queen wearing the previous queen's jewelry. :(

      Delete
    3. Of course the new Queen will get first pick, as is only right. Also, she is an older woman and more likely to wear the brooches than Kate, who has never been known for them.
To be fair to Camilla, she has been more inclined to choose either jewels that belonged to the Queen Mother over ones that were QE2's favourites, or (I'm thinking of the tiara here) wearing jewels that were not iconic on her late Majesty.
Give them a chance to sort things out - there aren't that many big gun jewel occasions on the British calendar nowadays.

      Delete
    4. 100% the new Queen will get first choice on all the major pieces in the collection and rightly so. I think she will wear some of the larger pieces very well. I'm hoping to see the Queen Mother's emerald necklace on her. The Princess has worn the Grenville earrings, the festoon diamond necklace and the emerald necklace since the Queen died. I just hope now she is Princess of Wales she will start wearing Princess Diana's jewellery. S.🙂.

  12. I've never 'loved' this particular coat-dress as I have felt there is little shape to it and it has seemed to 'hang' on Catherine. Today however, I thought everything was pulled together well. I prefer this striking hat, with my least favourite look being accessorised with the Sean Barrett pillbox hat. The necklace suits Catherine a treat adding a touch of regal glamour whilst paying tribute to our late Queen. I am not so keen on the blue clutch bag, however that said, I am not sure which colour I'd have chosen to break up the colour blocking; Maybe the shade of red from the crown! I guessed she would be wearing blue to represent the Scottish flag! Overall I liked today's look.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have to agree about the hat. It is tedious and it is just too much. Too much combined with the choker, the clutch that is very nice but of a very different style, the earrings. It doesn't match and it clashes. Anyway I am super happy to see W&K appear in such good spirits and support C&C. Nice of Kate to include Scotland' s blue color.

  14. She looks beautiful as always, but I think these are the kind of events that deserve a new outfit.

I do like her new hat. What I find boring is that blue coat again, which doesn't flatter her hips.

  15. I love a reworked rewear but feels like we’ve seen this coat a lot lately. Although not appropriate for this event specifically, it would be nice to mix it up with a rewear of the fit and flare coats/dresses she used to favor. If I had her legs, I’d show them off in knee-length outfits!

As soon as I saw her hat I was reminded me of the cap that the Scots Regiment wear (and were wearing today). Not the color but the simple style of the hat with the "feather" in it. The clan chief of my family clan (Campbell), the Duke of Argyll, wore a very similar hat/cap the one and only time I met him when I was at the Gathering of the Clans in Edinburgh in 2009. And actually Charles and Camilla, then Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, were there as well. So, anyway, while I agree that the hat might look "meh" there's a lot of symbolism for me in it.

  18. The Duchess looked absolutely beautiful today for the occasion. Actually, they all looked so regal! It was a beautiful ceremony, but I have to admit, I was displeased with the constant shouting I am sure we all heard. I had to fast forward to the parts I was most eager to see. No need for negativity at this occasion or any really. If one does not agree, simply don’t show up. But going back to how The Duchess looked, to me, her best asset is her genuine smile. Thank you Charlotte for the post! Lovely to see! ♥️🥰

  19. I do love this outfit and she looks beautiful in blue. As to wearing a new dress to this coronation, I feel that while this is a very important coronation, it has more of a low-key tone, making this rewearing very appropriate and less 'ostentatious'. Especially, since Kate is not in robes like Charles, Camilla and William are -so not disappointed it isn't a new outfit. Absolutely love the new style of hat, don't know if I love it with this coat because it seems a bit more neoprene and neon in nature, but it photographed very nicely inside the church with the subdued lighting. I would have liked to see a brooch as well, but think the necklace and the earrings have a special meaning for Kate. As much as many of us would like for Kate to bring out a new piece of jewelry at every opportunity, I think the measured way we are seeing the Queen's jewelry is respectful on many levels.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I find the pearl choker too fussy and I wish she had worn a different necklace here and also for the two funerals. I remember many of us did not like her tiny and barely-there necklaces and earrings years ago. Now, I feel she's heading toward the other extreme, at least for daytime wear.

  25. I've always loved St Giles'. Its magnificent vaulting is genuinely emotionally-inspiring, though the church as it stands now is largely the result of 19th-century redesign and rebuilding. I think it the perfect setting for this event, notwithstanding St Giles' unfortunate association with the misogynistic and vitriolic John Knox and the origins of the Presbyterian Church. As someone who descends, proudly, from a long line of Scots Presbyterians on my maternal side, and who started out as a specialist in early-modern religious history in Italy and England before moving to broader cultural concerns, I think I'm entitled to regard the origins of Presbyterianism with a jaundiced eye.

But not St Giles', which does Scotland proud. I'd love to have witnessed this ceremony and appreciate that we've gotten such good photos of the event.

We're presented here with another of the Princess's -- oops, the Duchess's -- now standard uniform of fitted coat and matching hat and shoes for a special royal occasion. She looked well-turned out, as usual, but I have to say that despite the electric-blue jolt -- sorely needed in an ocean of rather subdued hues -- the look is becoming rather staid. I've been trying to imagine how the Duchess/Princess might break out of this uniform in a manner that still nods to royal protocol, because, God knows, I expect that she herself is finding the constraints of royal dress somewhat tedious these days. As Princess of Wales, she has a chance to forge a new path in a variety of ways, and I'd love to see her take a few risks with her wardrobe. Even on occasions like this.

  27. I like the hat, the trim makes me think of a quill, which then makes me think of the Writer's Museum in Edinburgh. (Not that that has anything to do with anything!) I think the necklace would look a tad better in a formal setting, in a low necked gown, a brooch would have been pretty instead. Either way, she looks very lovely, as always.

  28. A beautiful colour blue and re wear of this classic design. I like the hat she has chosen it matches her lapels which are a shiny fabric too. I don't like pillbox hats, but another option would have been the nice thick headbands she wears. Hair looks gorgeous in the updo. I'm not sure about the pearl choker I find it a heavy looking piece and my least favourite of the chokers available to wear. I would like to see her steer away from the matchy matchy again and to have chosen a different clutch maybe a silver one to pick up the silver in the necklace and earrings or even a pearl embellishment on the blue clutch? Make up looking fresh and pretty. Good to see they had lovely weather for the occasion. Sue in WA

  29. Have to agree that the hat is too shiny. I do like her new way of standing out in bold colours, even though the icy green from Trooping and the blue today weren’t the best choices. Williams mantle is green and the colours clash. It’s too much blue. If she wanted to give a nod to the Scottish flag, a darker blue or white would have been better.
The choker also didn’t go along with it. The three thistles brooch or the purple thistle brooch would have been a nice touch as well. I don’t like Queen Mary’s thistle brooch so I would rather see a rework of it.
I am not shy of criticising her spending choices around fashion. But this was absolutely the occasion for a new, only worn once, piece. It’s sad that this occasion wasn’t deemed worthy enough.

  30. I am not a fan of this coat either, its tone of blue is too strong for my tase, and its line too 'straight' for her figure, but it's tailored so perfectly on her that the result is very elegant anyway. I prefer this styling than the previous ones. Firstly for her hair (she looks great with an elegant updo!), secondly for the necklace which I find perfect for a V neck, and finally for the hat which is less boring than the previous two and adds a touch of light.

  34. I'm writing this before I've read anyone else's comments. I wanted my response to be authentically me & not influenced by what I've read.

I quickly read the post last night, (no comments) & then I'm here relooking at it this morning. At first I didn't like the hat & I was a bit curious about Kate's whole ensemble. However, with fresh eyes this morning, I actually really like it all!

I at first, thought the hat odd & then this morning was like" Ohhhhhhh, I think she's giving a nod to the many Scottish Military hats, that have a feather or such sticking out." Then I noticed that the same color blue popped up in several ways, during the whole event. First I noticed it matched the Sash that William wore & I saw it used at various times during the event... even appearing in long banners in St. Giles.

I also love her choice of jewels. The Queen's pearl choker reminded me of Diana & I believe Charlotte mentioned that Kate was wearing Diana's earrings & bracelet. So Kate, in her choices, gave nods to both the late Queen & Diana. I looked at the photos with fresh eyes & (while she always looks lovely) I had a new appreciation for her ensemble! Will & Kate looked Wonderful!! :)

I couldn't help look at them in wonder..... from St. Andrews to this ceremony..... what a history they have in Scotland!! xoxo

  38. I wish that William and Kate had been able to extend their visit to Scotland to encompass some charity work. I am from Scotland ( although now living in the States) and, if I were to guess, many of those watching the royals arrive and depart from St Giles would be tourists rather than Edinburgh folks whom, to be honest, are far too busy trying to meet ends meet than take a day off work.
While Charles with Dumfries House and the Prince’s Trust and the Duke of Edinburgh with his award scheme ( my nephew is completing this right now) made sure they started project that will leave long lasting legacies that touch people’s lives, I believe William and Kate have a ways to go. And having this helicopter visit ( quite possibly literally) in between trips to Wimbledon and polo ( plus Ascot ) very doesn’t do anything to build connections to Scotland.
As far as her fashion is concerned I find dressing in the color of our flag to be an outdated ( even patronizing) way of trying to show a connection with the country you are visiting. I would much rather she had worn a Scottish designer or two which would support and profile local businesses, for example with the Strathsberry bags.
