The £25,000 a table dinner is the most glamorous event on the itinerary and the perfect finish to what has been an incredible, action packed day. Since William and Kate touched down it was non-stop with a variety of interesting engagements.

The dinner was held in William and Kate's honour to celebrate Mumbai's film and creative industries.
It was hosted by the British High Commission in partnership with the British Asian Trust, of which Prince Charles is founder and President. The Prince of Wales founded the British Asian Trust in 2007 to do something about the widespread poverty and hardship that he saw in South Asia.
Film actors including Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Rishi Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar who the Cambridges met earlier today, were amongst the many famous stars welcoming the Duke and Duchess to India.
Kate met star Aishwarya Rai and The ‘King of Bollywood’ Shah Rukh Khan. The gala was held at the ballroom of The Taj Mahal Palace where the Cambridges are staying tonight. The hotel shared photos of final preparations before guests arrived.

What's on the menu tonight? The Mail Online reports that gosht dum biryani made with mutton and green chillies is. And a milder option is also on offer – chicken butter masala. Kate sat between Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Adar Poonawalla.
The event raised funds for three charities the Cambridges had the opportunity to learn more about during their activities earlier today: Door Step School, which works to provide literacy to marginalised sections of society; India's Childline - helping vulnerable children in need; and Magic Bus - an organisation committed to steering children towards a better life. The Palace said: "The Duke and Duchess are pleased that this event will raise funds to create a small legacy of their visit to India."
Prince William gave a speech at the gala: "When Catherine and I were married, India was the first place on Catherine's list that she told me that she wanted to visit. Two children and five years later, we have finally made it - and we are both honoured to be here. Catherine and I embark on a journey to get to know the vibrant India of the 21st century".
Kate chose a bespoke sapphire blue gown and matching cape by her go-to evening wear designer Jenny Packham. The beading on the gown was actually done in India and the silhouette and design of the garment was clearly inspired by the host country. Sapphire blue is a fantastic colour for Kate - she looked outstanding. The Duchess has really embraced India in terms of her sartorial selections across the board today.

With thanks to those who suggested the Duchess wore the Prada Suede Wavy Strap Sandal. The d'orsay sandal features a wavy three-strap upper, adjustable slingback and lightly padded footbed. They are available at Neiman Marcus for $750.

ReplyDeleteLOVE the earrings. Not as blingy as I was hoping for but they are right up my alley. (Just noticed that it seems to be diamonds around the blue stones, so maybe a bit more blingy than I first thought!)
I have to confess, my first thought of the dress was "matronly". And while it's not her best gown (in my opinion) it's still really stunning and growing on me. The colour is perfect! And I really like that the embroidery was made in India. I also appriciate that it even has a little train!! So I do like it! I also like the sweeping skirt! Maybe it's the cape that's doing it for me.. I wonder how it looks without it, and I hope we get to see it in the future :) I have to say, it looks really stunning on the pictures when she's walking and in movement :) And the dress really fits in with the theme and the other guests :) So a win in my book!

DeleteI agree with you at. At first I wasn't wowed but the more I look at the amazing detail and just how much she tried to involve the host country it has grown on me. It also made me a little less tense when I read it was a cape and not attached sleeves. I would love to see this at a state dinner, perhaps with sapphires? (I know. Yeah, right!), with the dignitaries. It greatly reminds me of the red gown fro the Chinese state dinner in some respects.
DeleteI think she has done well so far with her choices. Trying to include England, India, etc. and not come across as unfeeling in Mumbai. I thought her second outfit of the day was a complete win. From the look, to the price point, etc. So far it is a great pre-op distraction.

DeleteMatronly was my first thought as well but once I looked closely, I fell in love. The bead work is increfible and the giwn moves beautifully. The sweepibg skirt is just lovely. Three winning outfits in one day! Do we know what the stones of the earrings are? Lapis lazuli, maybe?

ReplyDeleteLoved her first two outfits today. This gown is a miss for me. She looks frail in it, like she doesn't have the bosom or the heft to hold up the jewel encrusted fabric. If she put on a few pounds, it might work. But as is, the dress is wearing her.

DeleteI loved the yellow gown in the background like Cherie and others have said. I think her hair needs to be up but the way it is it looks like a school marm with no sexy or flair. The earrings are opaque and not very attractive. I just am not enthused about this gown and do not like the sheer tunic or whatever it was. It is so similar to her red Chinese dress. I'm happy she's there but the gown isn't a match for Kate. She could do much better. The dress is wearing her like you said Beth. Another fashion Iconic moment missed.

Standing exposed outside at an entrance or on the steps of a museum would leave

At any rate, as pointed out in a previous post,these decisions are rarely, if ever, made on the spot by W&C. They are planned ahead by staff (with input from the RPOs, I imagine) who have
scouted the venue in advance.
So W&C can't take the credit for this photo-op nor should they be blamed when
they don't stop.
I was a bit undecided at first, as many will write I am sure, it is very very slowly growing on me. I love the colour,the embroidery, her make up-it was done by other than Kate finally, see the close up, looks beautiful.

Her posture is well, she needs to stand straight and proud, it is clearly seen in the pictures. Also no blings, I don't like her blue earrings at all. Pity!

DeleteI thought she looked dull and washed out. I noticed that first thing. I am glad though that Natasha didn't have Kate's hair parted in the middle with surfer girl curls, so I suppose that is something. I didn't like her updo either. Too bunched up and amateur looking. I am glad she wore her hair up though. I see so much more potential for Kate and someone isn't giving that to her.
Stunning gown, but way too matchy matchy. I like the undo, always a good choice with formal attire, and the big bold Indian earrings are a sweet fun touch. People have commented on her poor posture. She is very fit and athletic, my guess is that although she loves her towering heels, the end result is that she is almost always taller than those around her and that she instinctively hunches down when chatting. If she would drop those heels to a lower height, which is very fashionable today,her feet and back will be thankful and the posture will improve.... Impressive first day for William and Kate!

Knocked. It. Out. Of. The. Park. I was "meh" on the other two selections. The first one looked just - hot. Not "hot" in a shirtless-David-Beckham way either.
ReplyDeleteThe second dress looked cooler and more appropriate and I liked the wedges. I think she probably knew she would be participating so she wore shoes she knew could handle turf and that she could run in.
This is - amazing. In every way. Just perfect. THIS is the old Kate style we yearn for and want back!!
Someone in one of the earlier (the KP reception post, I think) mentioned that every outfit would be made better if she would just straighten up and stop hunching over and I agree. She doesn't have the same worry that Diana did of being taller than her husband. Even if she stands straight up and in 4" heels, she's still shorter than William.
But this is - wow. Just wow. Well done, ma'am.
The rest of the crowd is stunning as well, beautiful women, stunning, colorful gowns, handsome, well-groomed men in proper attire. This is how a gala needs to be done.
I wanted to see her in something a bit sexier...with important jewels! But she looks fabulous and the color, beading, and statement earrings all work beautifully. I like the drapiness of the cape - she looks so willowy. Hoping to heaven she's not wearing blue pumps under there. Strappy sandals please!! It's been a great start to the tour! Tonights look is dazzling - colour and provenance. I love how she's coordinated each piece and her hair looks amazing. Hopefully we'll get to see how it looks with out the cape. Day one seems to have started on high, lets hope it continues....

I am Indian and spent the first 21 years of my life in Delhi. I wore mini skirts and sleeveless dresses and tank tops and the whole nine yards. I went clubbing as a teenager and everyone around me was dressed the same. When I visit beach resorts in India I wear one-piece swim suits. Yes, even that happens, as shocking as you may find it. My mother wears sleeveless blouses with her saris in the summer, so did BOTH my grandmothers, my aunts. My mother wore long skirts all her life and sleeveless salwars all the time. When I go back to India I dress the same way as I dress in the US. How unbelievable.

Anon 17:04 - isn't Aishwarya Rai wearing sleevess with her saree ? I think you are mistaken. I believe that if we see other pictures there will be other celebrities in sleeveless knee-exposing clothes. I have a close Indian friend and have watched many a Bollywood film with her in my graduate student days. And there was nothing conservative about the way women dressed in those films. According to my friend in cities people dress the same as they do in the West.

DeleteMy indian classmate wore "croptops" (sorry for wrong words) with a cap sleeve (shirt made of shiny fabric) under her saris and so does her mother and grandmother. I think it might depend alot on many different factors.
DeleteI don't think it's strapless and, in fact, if you look closely at the side views, it looks like there's about a 3/4 or a bit longer lace sleeve on the gown. If it was sleeveless, we'd see bare arm but her arms definitely are covered by something other than the shawl.
DeleteI'm going to guess that the original intent is not to wear the shawl as Kate has it, draped around her shoulders, but rather in the manner of the scarf that is worn with a sari (I think?), draped around the neck and thrown back over one shoulder. The dress definitely has sleeves.
I think one or two of the Bollywood actresses at the event are wearing a gown with a scarf that way.
You are entirely correct, 17:29. India is a country of so many amazing, interesting and vibrant cultures, religions, regions - and climates!!

ReplyDeleteI'm going to add this - I really do think that her style is a mix of Kate picking out her own ensembles - when she KNOWS she looks good and appropriate, as in tonight. Notice that smile? Then compare it to some other black-tie events where it appears that someone else (Natasha, Rebecca, etc.) has styled the look. She's smiling but it's not as bright as when she's wearing clothing that she's picked out and styled herself. Like all of us, she knows when she looks good and when it's just "meh," and it shows in her smile, her manner, etc.

DeleteAlso, the shoes are velvet slippers. I actually kind of like that he wears those to formal functions. He has a tendency to just go standard with his fashion so I like that little edge!
I think for the red carpet walk, it's not a big deal. Several of the other gentlemen had their jackets open. Then they button up for the official part of the dinner, introductions, speeches, etc. Since this is an entertainment industry event vs. a state dinner, things are a bit more relaxed around that kind of thing.

DeleteA beautiful color on her nails would have been much more polished, pardon the pun. We have had this conversation before about Kate's pedicure or lack thereof. I think it is an unnecessary faux pas, just like all those billowing short skirts with no undies situations, and hair down covering Jewels and design elements. I agree with others who have suggested that Kate needs a professional dresser. She surely does.
I don't like colored nail polish. I do think the sandals could have been a sparkly silver. Actually, I would have preferred sharply pointed silver slippers with closed toes.

ReplyDeletePerhaps because Australia and NZ don't have a very culturally distinctive type of dress? (Other than traditional Aboriginal and Maori clothing, that is.) She did wear clothing by Australian and Kiwi-born designers on that trip.
DeleteI think there's a little more formality involved here than there was in Aus/NZ and a different vibe - Aus/NZ is still a Commonwealth country and still connected to England and the royal family, ie still part of the "family." Also, Aus/NZ is largely without many of the negative connotations of colonialism and empire that the UK has in India. There's probably more of an effort to assimilate and wear Indian designers, rather than just be another English woman visiting India in her English clothes.
DeleteMany of the designers that Kate wore in Aus/NZ are available in Aus/NZ whereas the Indian designers may not be that widely known in the UK?
Also, there's a bit of silent diplomacy/business going on. The Tata Group of India has announced it is selling its UK steel plants, potentially putting around 10,000 Britons out of jobs.
I'm sure the focus on Indian designers, thus raising interest in them and, potentially, increasing their sales, is a subtle reminder that the UK still has some influence and impact in India.
I think the difference is, despite the change of country, there was no real style change between Britain and New Zealand/Australia. It is just the normal style. She did wear one or two designers from New Zealand, and she did embrace the culture with that fern-appliqued dress. Probably she just didn`t like what the New Zealand/Australian designers had to offer. Anyhow, she has only worn one outfit by an Indian designer so far, she has just incorporated lots of colour and bright patterns. I don`t really know, except maybe it just wasn`t so obvious, or the cultural style was just not really any different from Britain. I`m sure that she has her reasons. :)

DeleteI'm not a designer but here's my honest opinion:
ReplyDelete1. The dress is very beautiful but the whole ensemble is waayy too matchy matchy.
2. A CASA SILVER Jenny Packam clutch would have gone well with the Jimmy Choo strappy silver sandals
3. Since she's worn black sandals, perhaps a black clutch would have been great.
4. This silhouette makes the duchess look way thinner than she already is.
5. Queen Elizabeth back in the early younger days, wore some beautiful gowns that were fuller on the bottom and tighter on the bust. In a similar manner, this dress; if it was slightly shorter on the embellished part with some push up bras and then a bit voluminous on the bottom (not as puffy fluffy as the Queen's) only slightly puffy on the waist, would have looked way better!

I agree with everything you've written. The color of the dress is so intense, the earrings are too much. Kate looks gorgeous, but I'm not even sure about this gown. I think it's lovely, but the color is too a bit much for my taste. There is way too much material given the intensity of the color. But overall, Kate looks so beautiful and I love her hair.

The drape of the wrap is beautiful on her, the colour always one of her most successful and Jenny Packham is always an excellent choice for her - becoming her go-to as Catherine Walker was for Diana and Hartnell, Amies and Stuart Parvin were or are for the queen.
Kate's hair is lovely up, she looks very regal and yet young and graceful and the sparkle is dazzling. Such a gorgeous dress. It photographs beautifully with the lovely Bollywood ladies - and while it flirts just a little with those overly diamante beauty queen gowns - its detailing and shimmering speak of "a real princess."

DeleteJulia, I had the very same thought about the sapphire earrings. But it seems Kate is wearing jewelry that pertains to Asia, and these lapis lazuli ones, along with the beading, make the gown Indian. The version Charlotte illustrated might have been a bit less overwhelming.
DeleteWhere jewels are concerned, I wonder whether there were diplomatic and security concerns. Protecting royal heirlooms, which may suggest the days of empire, could be a problem. On the other hand, the last British royal to routinely wear shawls was the first empress of India!
I loved the red bandana dress from the morning, so much prettier than the version on the model, and I was stunned by the flowing, regal blue gown for evening. The word bandana is a Hindi derivative, and the red and blue ones feature paisley patterns. Kate's red and blue outfits, and the choice of her favorite British designers, suggests a bit of British patriotism, appropriate to the events, along with compliments to India in the details.
As for the afternoon dress, it simply reminds me of my teenage years long ago. It's pretty, but I thought that was a lot of fabric for sports and slum visits and charity chats.
By evening, Kate had the same smile as in New York, a very happy look. William said she had always wanted to visit India. I am so glad she is finally doing so.

DeleteI thought the opposite when I first saw it, and before I read your comment. Sapphire blue, complementing not only her engagement ring, also recalling Diana, she wore enough of Sapphire earrings in the past. This is her own choosing, made by the host country’s designer. The fact that her gown is designed by British Jenny Packham; it leaves her with at least one item to complement Indian designers. It worked out well for the purpose as well as carrying the whole image. There is something about those earrings that is one of those ancient and antique blue variations.
I am sure there will be enough occasions to have your wishes come true in the future.
She looks very glamourous. Seemed to have been a really fun day of engagements. She looked very engaged and happy the whole time.

Definitely her best formal look (besides the red Jenny Packhm) since Charlotte was born and definitely one of her best red-carpet looks EVER! She was absolutely radiant and she looked so stunning! And William was had some as ever.:)
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for an updo and there it was! Not big on the earrings but they worked amazingly with the dress. I might have changed the shoes, maybe, but, overall, the whole look stunning. Love the jeweled bodice/cape/clutch and the colour and little bit of train. Definitely a 101% from me!

WOW. I MUCH prefer the beautiful, beautiful yellow gown that the woman in the background of the first photo has on. That yellow dress is stunning and Kate would have looked spectacular in that. Why oh why didn't she wear something even more iconically Indian and beautiful like that? Her dress looked like a prom dress that was trying to be Indian, designed by someone who didn't have a clue.

DeleteNow I can mention the wonderful new sandals, (just wish they were blue) and forgot before to mention the matching bag. Kate has done wonderfully so far; mingling Indian materials and embroidery with British designers and using - so far - one Indian designer as well, with everything so appropriate and striking.
ReplyDeleteAt the risk of being pelted with cabbages, I actually agreed a bit with that DM article, while I've liked most of Kate's recent outfits reasonably well and they've mostly been appropriate to the occasion, when put together, they come off as a little bland, if not actually drab, with just a couple of exceptions. Different from her first year or two, when she looked so perfect and chose with such flare. Some experimenting too, that didn't always quite work.
But this tour has started off in a blaze of colour and with a true bang - and I have hope that Kate will bring that thought and vibrancy back home with her where a little dazzle and colour would also be welcome on the coming engagements.

And I appreciate like the cape/shawl, as someone who gets cold easily, you can be sure the A/C is on full blast in there and I would be a shivering miserable mess without one. this is elegant and the whole look fabulous. ReplyDeleteShe's a woman in her prime and at the top of her game -- this is a stunning outfit! The earrings are large but she has to colouring to carry them and this is certainly a dramatic enough setting.
ReplyDeleteThe beading and lace work on the gown is heavenly and I can't believe how well she has referenced her host country throughout the day. And so exciting to have new shoes as well!
They both looked to have visibly relaxed as the day went on. I hope they enjoy some quieter moments when they get to the nature reserve and then Bhutan. But in the meantime it's amazing to try and keep up with them!

Loved all three outfits today with some minor reservations-I'm not in love with the wedges worn to the sports field. I understand they might be necessary to allow for participation. I'm not sold on the earrings for the formal dinner. I know they are expensive with semi-precious stones but they look cheap. I just think the Queen Mum's sapphires would have been stunning.
I loved the airy print used in the afternoon dress. I love the colour of the evening gown; although the way the cape/shawl was worn made it look somewhat matronly. I think the "cape" is meant to be in the style of an Indian scarf. When you come from that culture, it's much easier to wear a scarf like that and look fashionable and not be self-conscious. Kate may have chosen to wear it in a way that felt most comfortable for her but it looked a little dowdy. Still, I have no idea how she is standing and smiling after such an exhausting 2 days.
My only constant criticism of late-someone must speak to Kate about her posture. It is terrible. I can't believe that she is practising yoga and Pilates, with anyone who knows what they're doing, and is not being helped with this (I say this because I'm a yoga teacher and 15 year+ practitioner). I think she probably needs to quit wearing such high heels. It obviously makes her a lot taller than anyone around her leading to the need to stoop to speak with most people. I know she needs to stand out in crowds, etc. but this won't go away as an issue until she consciously works on it. It's such a shame and will eventually lead to various painful issues. I'm starting to cringe very time I see her because it's becoming more apparent.

I loved everything, although I think a simple pair of stud earrings would have worked well since there was so much embellishment to the dress. I could not have imagined a better first day.

DeleteOh, the Duchess looks incredible!!! I think this is my most favourite look ever. And her earrings - they immediately reminded me of a book of fairytales I used to read as a little girl. In one tale, there were EXACTLY the same earrings :) (there was a picture in the book). I jumped up and had to show them to my 3 men at home (my husband and 2 sons). They probably thought I was going slightly mad :) but they agreed she looks lovely.

ReplyDeleteReally beautiful! She looks more like "the old Kate." I think it is the updo and the makeup. She looks fresher and younger. As far as the "matronly" style of the dress. I agree that it isn't the most youthful silhouette. But I think she either feels more comfortable covered up like this (I'm also thinking of the James Bond dress) or that she feels like it is part of her role as a royal to look more demure. We've seen a lot of high necklines, long sleeves, etc. recently and I don't feel it is an accident. Especially if you compare it with her sartorial choices of a few years ago. This is a shift I expect to see from now on. As long as she is comfortable!

I think Kate looks great in blue, and objectively I like the outfit as it is. Unfortunately I feel like this gown isn't the best one for Kate. It sort of hangs on her frame and doesn't really flatter her figure. It's not an issue of displaying her figure or showing it off, it's more an issue of the gown wearing her. She's not wearing the gown, the gown is wearing her.

I have loved everything Kate has worn. The color and patterns are fantastic. I just wish she had worn a tiara to the Bollywood reception. Bollywood is so over the top that a tiara would have fit right in. However, she looked perfect in her Jenny Packham ensemble.

I don't think it's a confidence issue - although if she reads even a smidgeon of her press, one could understand a lack of confidence. I just see that rounded look of a person who spends her time mothering - holding and loving her babies. I think it will disappear as they become more independent of her.
Let's hope she doesn't read anything that usherettes about her. She has enough to deal with already.

Holy Wow! Our girl hit it out of the park today sartorially. This may be her best day ever. It is obvious that great care and concern went into the planning of every detail in her appearance. I love how the duchess always takes such great consideration of her host country in her choice of designers and outfits, it shows she cares. Britain is blessed to have these two as ambassadors for their country, and as their future heads of state.

ReplyDeleteWhen the DoC does engagements in the UK, in her buttoned up monochrome uniform, I often find myself wishing for more flowing fabrics, vivid colors, lots of details, prints, and just more... oomph. Today's looks are just so pretty and she seems more at ease, comfortable, happy. I hope she can take this style and incorporate some of it when doing engagements back home.

Beautiful dress-new photos have emerged of her without the cape/shawl. The dress has 3/4 sleeves and looks like it would fit right in for a tiara event back home in England. I suspect we will see it again.
ReplyDeleteWilliam gave a speech at the reception, and he mentioned that India was first on Kate's list of places to visit and after five years and two kids, they have.
Kate has dark hair. It is considered a neutral. The blue of her dress, earrings, shawl, purse are all considered neutrals. You are never supposed to have that many neutrals in one outfit. I am sorry to differ with ya'll but this was a boring, octogenarian, cliche' Indian outfit.

One would think that having a big name designer design a bespoke outfit for Kate with all the beautiful and bright colors of silk available in India, that she could have come up something that you can't find in any brides shop. And the earrings look like blue plastic or rocks, too matchy matchy and no dazzle. India has some exquisite Jewelry. What's she doing? She is an Art History major. She designed a beautiful wedding and wedding cake? Where did that flair and art wisdom go? I couldn't believe it when I saw Kate in this outfit. I thought maybe her people had grabbed the Queen's luggage instead, except even the Queen would have worn prettier earrings. Kate is dressing like a dowager. What is up with that? What will she be dressing like five years from now? I don't know how she could dress any older. I won't even comment on her other two outfits because they were so bland and strange I could do pages just on those. Neither one seemed to fit right, not to mention the styles and the colors. I don't mean to upset anyone, truly, truly, but as you can tell I am grossly disappointed and astonished at Kate's clothing choices thus far. Was she so sad to leave her children that she let someone else take over her tour wardrobe? Did her sadness come through in her clothing? She is only what? 33 or 34? I don't want her dressing like Kim Kardashian or Brittney Spears, etc. but like she did when she was dating William and even better. I know ya'll are so excited about the tour and so am I and I don't want to be a party pooper but I want to give my opinion on her clothes like anyone would. The life seems to have gone right out of her wardrobe. It is very sad.

DeleteKate may not be all that into fashion as we have heard but she needs to be. She worked as an accessories designer. She has an art degree. She used to dress a lot better. If her assistant and hairdresser have taken over designing her wardrobe they need to be re-assigned immediately. I mean they are using designers for bespoke pieces and are still messing up. Kate has such potential to express beauty and life in her clothing. It is important and could uplift a lot of people but instead she comes out time and again looking not at all like the Kate who used to be and often not like Kate, period. How often has she shown up and had us scratching our heads going "huh?") Someone is missing the mark and it is a shame (and very frustrating for many of us). I agree with 22:10 about the time allotments. If Kate doesn't want to do Royal tours because she doesn't want to be away from the children then she shouldn't have become a Royal. Tours are part of Royal life. The children have a beloved nanny and Kate's family. They will do fine. They can skype. I am so very let down by all of this.

ReplyDeleteBut first off- hats off to you, Charlotte for your dedication to a fabulous quality blog. Your professional attitude and work is commendable indeed.
However, as an American that lives in London now- I worked as a designer in India from the US and Europe for any number of years- and just have to chime in on this tour. The possibilities for an excellent trip are so high.
I have to say- and I see I'm not alone in being not only disappointed in the matronliness of this blue gown but the rather lack of outside the box thinking in its selection.Indian formals are stunning affairs- and she really needed to be "up to her game" sartorially with the other gowns in the room. This looks like it was purchased off the rack at Neiman Marcus' Last Call. A beaded-in-India "special" that I've seen a million times over. boring!
It is surely to say,Catherine is concerned to "do the right thing" and will take proper pains to "tick the right boxes" in her sartorial selections- more times than not it is clearly evident that her sartorial selections are not only not her priority, but also- sadly, something for which she does not have an extreme flair or "eye" for. It is clearly - as we'd been advised before "not her focus!" Why expect more?
I've just continued to be disappointed in Catherine's sartorial choices over the past year- and I see that I am not alone. She's a lovely gorgeous young lady, but I am tending to doubt if she will ever develop the skill for dressing that William's mother had.
The way she butchered the navy flocked polka -dot in London last week with the inset, the matronliness of the choice this evening, and the longer-sleeved safe version of the fabulous Alexander McQueen piece today just spell the fact she "knows her job" but plays it just way too safe.
I know not to expect surprises-which is a tragedy because with this trip she really really has the opportunity to pull out the stops with some of the most exciting pieces and designs in the world. What fabulous opportunity to have fun! And how sad that Catherine's response( or the guidance of her small team) simply are to "play it safe." The day dress off to the assorted events today- used a beautiful print, beautiful colours , but was just so terribly dull in its interpretation. It's hot there- no reason it couldn't have had a shorter sleeve-and a more fun and youthful silhouette.
Finally, I am terribly disappointed at the speed of this tour. So many events today- they absolutely could not have spent an hour max at each event- each situation deserving far more attention than they were able to give. The slums of India are something that fail to leave an impression- and surely should have been addressed more in depth. The amount of time spent just insulted a huge portion the Indian population!
The option should either have been to have brought the children along, and lengthen the trip, or to have simply bit the bullet and taken a few more days. I find the schedule rather insulting to the Indian continent in its speed- and as much as we all looked forward to this trip- I can't help but feel sadly- and oddly disappointed in the whole thing, so far.
How's that for a first post from someone who's been an avid watcher for years? Nothing to do with you, Charlotte- but everything to do with the disappointment with Catherine who seems only interested in the "cookie- cutter" development of her position- and rushing through the duties to get back to her children - admirable one could say- but I hardly think the children are suffering too terribly.
Doing the minimum seems to be a trademark of both William and Catherine- and frankly, it's wearing a bit thin.

I think these various engagements in just one day! is too crazy! They should have come at least for 10 days because of their visit to TWO countries!! everything looked like they were done in "haste"
I'm torn on this look, I think the dress is beautiful but the cape makes it look ill-fitting on her. I saw it and immediately knew they were going to a Bollywood event but it feels a bit heavy. I do love the dress, I just wish it had a little bit more of a defined silhouette where the cape is concerned. I do not like the earrings at all. These earrings definitely feel too heavy against the delicacy of the beadwork.
ReplyDeleteShe can wear prints and colors that would intimidate me but she pulls them off. I'm not a huge fan of her first outfit of the day but I think that was more fabric than actual look. I loved the 2nd tunic dress and wedges - it was the perfect look for a day of activity in Mumbai. I may have to get myself a pair of those wedges!
I'm loving this tour already. They both seem very comfortable and natural when there's activity going on, they seem more invested to me when they're actually actively involved and not just watching.
They seem different, I don't know if it's because they've settled in as a family of four or if it's that they're getting more comfortable with these types of events. I don't know how to explain it....something has changed and I for one, think it's a change for the better.
I am with you on that Alaina. I didn't like the earrings for the reason you said. The dress was like a prom dress trying to be an Indian dress. And the paisley and the gathering at the top on dress one of the day was a no go for me. I am so hoping she wears something on this tour that I like.
DeleteKate looks absolutely STUNNING! I love the color of the dress and it is beautiful on Kate. The beading on the gown is so delicate and pretty and I love that it was made in her host country. Love her hair and love the jewels! Kate's ensemble from dress to hair to jewelry will be a favorite of mine! Definitely scored a 10+ from me tonight!

They are advertising that it is "A Country Built On Happiness" It looks Amazing! If anyone misses it look for it onDemand etc.! "The Breathtaking Himalayan Beauty of Bhutan" Check it Out! Bill Weir says in it's promo that it's intriguing seeing their purity being slowly exposed to the Technology of today. He speaks of visiting a little old woman in her tiny mountain home with a Satellite Dish on its roof & that she's avidly following our Election Process & She asked him if Trump is as crazy as he seems? lol I can't wait to see it in advance of their part of The Tour:)

Wow! I'm totally blown away with the dress, shoes, earrings, her hair, William's tux and shoes... they look wonderful. So much like royalty. Paying respect to their host but remaining true to themselves.

ReplyDeleteI think they did a great job on their first day, especially considering they had an almost 10 hour flight and then went straight to work with a packed day. Well done to both of them.
ReplyDeleteWilliam looked good all day I thought and Kate looked stunning tonight. I did see photos without the shawl which I think I liked better. Tiny, tiny nitpick, I like the earrings but agree with others that it was a little too matchy matchy which can make something look almost costume. Would have loved some fabulous big diamonds that only the royals own! Or the diamond and sapphire earrings. And while I'm at it, a brighter, glossier lip!
A couple of points :) I think it's great they paused for the photographers, clearly they know it would have been a poor move in a host country to walk by the local press without turning (as well as your own press corps) since they did the same thing upon arrival in NY. I wish they would extend this same courtesy at home.
Also I wish they would do more of these type of engagements at home! Because right away you see the excitement they bring, the variety they present, the way they allow William & Kate to interact and promote and shine. They have some very serious causes they've been championing but I think they need to broaden the spectrum. You see the excitement and fun here, I'd love for more Brits to be able to see that at home. It's instant positive press if nothing else. (So far I'd say Victoria Murphy's recent column about this being the right tour at the right time is spot on)
And of course Thank You Charlotte! You're surely tiring of hearing how wonderful you are ;)
Agree with you 100 percent. There is no reason they can't take two seconds to turn and pose for the press at events like the James Bond premiere and such...events where there is a red carpet they should make it a point to

It was as if Jenny took the dress pattern from the Chinese state dinner, modified the neckline and sleeves just a tad and had sequins seen in. The shawl was superfluous. Not a fan.

Shake the dust off that Royal bling and let it dazzle in the light of day like it is supposed to. Some of that sequestered bling, if freed, will look like it was made for a beautiful lady like Kate. ReplyDeleteI love Kate's latest look her outfits are super with an asian twist. The daytime ones were suitable for the occasions and the evening gown is beautiful without the cape as the long sleeves are sublimely embellished.
The quality and vivid color of the entire ensemble is a knock out. Everything accomplishes its purpose and complements the host country. It also blends as well as stands out gracefully with the group. Most of all, Kate looks at home, carries it all well to perfection. The cape/shawl worked out beautifully, and the train added some uniqueness. The dress without the cape still looks elegant however conservative. Of all her formal gown, the teal blue had been my favorite, but this speaks a lot, now #1.

ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see that she didn't have on her Jimmy Choo Vamp sandals - because I have them and love them - but maybe this is an indication that she'll wear them later in the tour and we'll get to see those lovely new Prada shoes.
I enjoy the tours so much that Will and Kate undertake. I do believe Kate does in fact try to play it safe and remain respectful to her host. She is lovely and representing her country well.

I still love this look but after seeing the sleeves, I think Packham probably meant for the shawl/scarf to be worn around the neck and thrown back or draped over one shoulder, as the Indian ladies at the gala tonight were wearing, I believe it is called a dupatta. If worn as it was probably intended, it would have added to the gown even more. Either that wasn't communicated to Kate or not communicated to her correctly, which I tend to think is the case. She's certainly savvy enough to wonder why a 3/4 sleeved gown would need an additional shawl over the arms and shoulders.

It cannot be easy, and must be tiring, so thank you so much for making the effort. I join many others who applaud and congratulate you on a job well done, and to let you know that I find your postings superior and more professional than most of the so called "journalists" from the DM and other British newspapers and tabloids. While I have been thoroughly enjoying your coverage of this trip so far, I have decided to refrain from reading the comments section for a while for I find most of the comments of late are just downright tiresome, mean-spirited, and catty. I need a break from the rampant negativity! Some posters don't even make an effort to be objective, fair and balanced, instead they take great pleasure in ridiculing and railing against the Duchess as if she's incapable of dressing herself on any given day. I find this behavior childish and sophomoric and not conducive to congenial dialogue. Since my first post didnt get approved (not sure why--there was nothing hateful or offensive about it) ill try again! I thought everything except the anita dongre look was disappointing. The mcqueen i felt was too tacky and very loud. It didnt suit the events she was doing. The blue gala gown was horrible. Kate could have picked from various modern indian designers but she chose jenny peckham--what does jenny peckham know about indian fashion? So the beading was done in india? big deal--that beading design is outdated is just very ugly sorry to say! She could have picked an indian designer like mannish malhotra, ridhi mehra, sabyasachi-- look these designers up! they do amazing modern designs that would looks amazing on kate. Not the greatest start in all honesty.
