Kate's Weekend at the Houghton Hall Horse Trials

We had hoped we would see Kate make a surprise appearance at the polo over the weekend, but instead the Duchess enjoyed the weekend at the Houghton Hall horse trials, located around the corner from the Cambridges' country home Anmer Hall in Norfolk. It was very much a family affair as Kate took the children, accompanied by Nanny Maria Teresa and friends James and Laura Meade, along to cheer on competitors. Below we see Kate holding George's hand and Laura Meade pushing the pram.

The folks at Lou Grey Cashmere were showcasing some of their fabulous pieces on Sunday when they spotted HRH walking past:

Lou Grey Cashmere Facebook Page

As mentioned earlier, William and Harry played at the Audi International Polo Challenge Saturday and Sunday at Coworth Park in Berkshire, in support of their charities The Royal Marsden, Sentebale, Tusk and WellChild. If I'm not mistaken, it's the bones of a three-hour drive from Norfolk to Berkshire, so William must have made the journey to Coworth Park on both days. Below, we see the Prince doing a spot of warming up before the polo commenced.

William and Kate also attended the horse trials on Saturday, there's a photo spread available at the Mail Online showing Kate with George and Charlotte. You can view it here. The photos were taken by Helen Mathias from EyeContact Photography.

Lynn News shared this information in their article:

'William and Kate are friends of Marquees Cholmondeley, who owns Houghton. "They looked very relaxed and were obviously enjoying themselves," said an onlooker.
The four-day event attracted hundreds of horses and riders, including top overseas competitors, and featured the only British leg of the FEI Nations Cup.'

Readers are of course familiar with the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley; Rose made quite the impression at the state banquet last October in her Temperley London gown. It's also been reported Kate will host a glittering gala in aid of East Anglia's Children's Hospices on 22 June. I expect it very likely Kate and Rose have forged a friendship, as they are of a similar age and both have young children.

Indeed, the weekend was rife with social connections. We saw the Duchess photographed with James and Laura Meade. James and William have been close friends since they attended Eton together. He is the son of Olympic gold medallist equestrian Richard Meade. He has become a close friend of Kate's too, and accompanied her to the Badminton Horse Trials after her brief split from William in 2007 (as pictured below).  He is also one of Princess Charlotte's godparents.

James's brother Harry Meade, also a friend of William and Harry's, was actually taking part in the trials, and undoubtedly they were all there to cheer him on. William and Kate attended Harry's wedding in October 2010, shortly before they announced their engagement.

It's been a hub of activity at Houghton Hall in recent days according to Lynn News: "As well as the main horse trials, with its cross country course set out across Houghton’s rolling parkland, other equestrian events included show jumping, dressage and Pony Club classes, with competitors from all over the country and a large number of more local riders."

A number of the riders showed off their skills on the cricket pitch during a match in aid of a favourite charity of Prince Harry's, Walking with the Wounded, on Saturday. I expect Kate may have been watching the cricket match in the photo above with George and James Meade.

Houghton Hall provides quite the backdrop for a summery drinks reception? Is anyone thinking Downton Abbey? :)

This year marked the event's tenth anniversary and organisers wanted to make it special for all the family. There were over seventy trade stands for onlookers to browse.

A look at Vintage Deli's stand.

The Duchess opted for casual looks for the horse trials. On Sunday, Kate wore a Barbour jacket she's had for years with skinny jeans and her hair in a bun.

On Saturday, Kate wore a breton stripe top. It was initially suggested it was one of her  Me + Em pieces. Upon closer inspection Susan from What Kate Wore noted the stripes on Kate's shirt are different and suggested Kate may have worn her Ralph Lauren 'Tori' top; below we see Kate wearing it in 2013.

The Duchess teamed the top with a navy sweater tied around her shoulders, with grey skinny jeans and what appears to be a leopard/animal print hairband. Kate's exact hairband hasn't been identified yet, but if you'd like to Repli-Kate it, Claire's Accessories has a a very similar piece for £2 and are currently running a Buy 1 Get 1 Free promotion.

On both days, Kate wore her Le Chameau Vierzonord Wellington Boots.

With thanks to The Royals and I and What Would Kate Do for sharing their finds on Twitter.

The eagle-eyed What Kate's Kids Wore quickly noted Prince George wore his Joules Baby Milford Quilted Jacket and Converse Kids Chuck Taylors. The shoes are available at Zappos for $30.

In other news, Kate will attend SportsAid's 40th anniversary dinner at Kensington Palace on Thursday, 9 June. The Duchess, who has been patron of the organisation since 2013, will meet many of the charity's ambassadors and young athletes, including those hoping to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games later this summer.

  1. Thanks for the post!! I know June is a busy month. I can't wait for all the activities!

  2. The leg in the pink tights looks to big to be Charlotte's. Do the Meade's have children? Perhaps their oldest - a girl?

  3. What a sweet picture! I love the first picture (and so so wish we could have seen Charlotte - oh well! :)) What a sweet image they make all holding hands.

The second one cracks me up. Such a mom moment - wiping George's face. Adorable!

I wasn't expecting them to show up at the polo games this weekend. If I'm not mistaken, Kate has taken George to the same game both years - father's day? I think it is much more likely that she will take the kids then. Although if Charlotte is any bit as wiggly and curious as George, it will be quite the day of wrangling!

Thanks for getting this up so quickly Charlotte, you are amazing!

Yeah, the game she's been at with George the past years are in June and more of the family usually are present. So it makes sense that they go then and not for the Audi one which is more celebrities and such.

  4. I love that she wore a headband. I haven't seen that yet so that's a fun "new" look. I'm so glad she wasn't wearing a pair of navy pants either. =) Have we seen those before---on her India tour maybe? Her "bun" looks more complicated, like an up-do we've seen her wear to official functions...any photos of it from the backside?

  9. Great photos. I noticed them on another site but you always give details witch I love. I know this news isn't about Catherine. But I read that prince Philip at age 94 had to back out of an engagement due to doctors orders. I hope all is well with him. Prince William has a very close bond with him. Thanks for the post very informative and always check your page for updates

    2. I am not sure Rose and Kate are friends. The husbands are very different generations.

      Delete
    3. 04:48,

Rose and Kate both have children about the same ages. Rose just had a baby girl, Iris, in March. Rose, from what I have read, usually chills with older people as a rule even when she was single. Her husband is older than she is.
Rose's husband is a lifelong friend of William and now Kate, so it is very likely that Rose and Kate are friends. Rose's husband will be the Lord Chamberlain to William and Kate at the opening of Parliment when they become Prince and Princess of Wales. Kate and Rose are apparently hosting a charity gala on June 22 at Houghton Hall, Rose's home, so it seems they are already friends.

      Delete
    4. Anon 20:05, how do you know who the Lord Chamberlain will be when W&K become Prince and Princess of Wales?

Honest question as I am ignorant to a lot of the official positions, peers, and ceremonial traditions. :)

      Delete
    5. If David is still alive then he will be their Lord Chamberlain. It is a lifelong title.

      Delete
    6. I don't think it's a life title at all. Not sure where you're coming from on this info Anon 5:24. Please elaborate.

      Delete
    7. If you google David Cholmondeley Wiki, you will find that he inherited the position of Lord Chamberlain and that it is indeed a lifetime position. He served as a Paige to the Queen until he reached the required age to retire from that and then in 1990, when his father passed, he inherited the Lord Chamberlain position.

      Delete
    8. Google Lord Great Chamberlain. This office of state is somewhat complex.

      Delete
    9. It is Dabid Cholmondeley's position for his lifetime.

      Delete
    10. Yeah, it is confusing trying to figure it out online. Two positions called the Lord Chamberlain and one is more official and appointed. Which one presides over the ceremony that will appoint them P&P of Wales, I wonder?

      Delete
    11. Ahhhhhh, his title is Lord GREAT Chamberlain rather than Lord Chamberlain, and he does have a role in the Prince of Wales Investiture and is hereditary whereas the Lord Chamberlain is not. Confusing as their titles are so similar! Thanks for the chance to learn more. :)

Well, all this according Wikipedia which is never wrong...... ;)

I can see why they decided to stay home and go to this instead of the polo! It seems like great fun, their friends are there and it's right next door to their home. And I heard they even had bouncing castles! Great to see some of their friends :)

Are we sure that is Nanny Maria? Somehow it doesnt look like her.. But I might be wrong. Doesn't matter either way.

I love Kate's headband. So adorable!

Also.. I think William was there because the EyeContact photographer mentioned that they had a picture of him eating cake of a paper plate. They also mentioned having extra watermarks since the pictures might be worth a bit so I assume we'll see more pictures when they have sold them :P

  17. Who are the three women walking with Kate and George? I do not think the nanny, Maria is in that photo. I think the girl in the pink tights is older than Charlotte.

It is so good that Kate gets to spend time with James Meade. Just like the old days. Would have been nice to have a photo of Kate and Rose, the lady of Houghton Hall, together, or of Iris, Rose's new daughter and Charlotte together, or of Rose's twin boys Oliver and Alexander(?) talking with George.
Since there are usually so many activities going on at Houghton Hall those photos are not doubt in the future sooner than later.

Glad that William does pre-polo warm-ups. First photo of that I think.

Is that Carole Middleton in that first photo? I think Kate looks very reserved and regal in that first photo, and the photo with the wipe is heartwarming.

Thanks Charlotte for all your efforts.

Actually, there has been quasi-official reports that she is allergic - given as a reason why she doesn't ride - (a major issue in the royal family) and one reason a car may have been used to take her to Westminster Abbey for her wedding. It never has stopped her from attending polo before her marriage though. (Worth noting she has been seen sneezing at least once as I recall following a carriage ride.)

  23. I tapped onto the photo of Kate wiping George's mouth and the photo is by Helen Mathias, of Eye Contact Photography. She is an aristocrat of the horsey set and travels the world and takes amazing, amazing photos as she goes. Quite a beautiful gallery of photos there if you tap into that one photo. I very strongly recommend that you tap on that and take an amazing journey through her other photos. She is an expert, expert photographer and the things that catch her eye are amazing. She has such an amazing sense of humor in some of her photos also. You won't be disappointed. She has certainly become or of my favorite photographers now, that's for sure. 25. Thanks for the update. Lovely to see Kate out with her family and friends - her life is one of huge contrasts isn't it : pomp and circumstance and mud and wet wipes?!
Delighted to see William supporting the Royal Marsden: I am often at the hospital and saw his latest visit. The patients on the ward he toured were all delighted to meet him, and he was very informal and friendly once the cameras were off, agreeing to pictures arm in arm with some patients. No formal protocol at all.

  41. How lovely to see Kate enjoying herself with her children and friends it is a long time since we have seen Kate out with friends The Mail carries a large number of photos however it is clear that the other man who the paper says is William is not William. Although he is wearing a cap you can see he has dark hair I think it may be Harry Meade who joined the rest of them for the picnic. It couldn't have been William as there is plenty of evidence that he was down South playing polo. I really think the papers do need to check on their facts. It is great that Kate seems to be just as friendly with the Meade family as William is. James & Laura were at her birthday weekend and at Church that Sunday and I believe were part of the skiing party in France. Harry and his wife do have children so the taller girl people refer to may be one of theirs I don't think James & Laura have any children.
I suspect we will not see anything of Kate now until the 9th June, then probably on the 10th June at the thanksgiving service for the Queen at St Paul's cathedral then 11th, probably 12th and finally 13th Garter service. You will be busy Charlotte!! It will be interesting to see if William & Kate appear at Ascot for the first time.
I was not surprised that Kate did not join William at the Polo though I have no doubt he will have thoroughly enjoyed himself not only playing polo which helps to raise a lot of money for his charities but also at the late night party that is held afterwards. I hope we shall see Kate with the children at one of the less high profile tournaments as previously possibly on Fathers day. I do think she is a little unwise in not accompanying William to some events on her own without the Children from photographic evidence from many different types of events he appears to be a flirtatious man with a liking for the women and women certainly gravitate to him.

    2. I don't know if that is Rosie Meade or not but I am of the opinion that that is the same women who was in Kensington Park with Kate and another (blonde) lady who was pushing a stroller. As I recall Kate had on her mid-length suede coat and the woman in question has a red coat on. That is the person who is holding George's hand at the horse trials.

  44. James and Harry Meade are sons of Richard Meade, an Olympic equestrian gold medalist. James is married to Lady Laura whose father is an Earl and her mother is a Countess. They live in Norfolk. Laura is a second or third cousin to the Duchess of Cornwall. Harry and Rosie had the wedding that William and Kate attended right before they announced their royal engagement. They were engaged at the time of Harry and Rosie's wedding but hadn't told the public yet. Everyone knew something was up though because William and Kate arrived together at the church, entered the church together and exited the church together. Apparently that was a first.

    2. Google images of Harry and Rosie Meade and you will find pictures of them with a baby who is not a newborn, for example attending a wedding in the Alps. Probably the same wedding Kate attended when she was pregnant with George? I cannot find any indication that James and Laura Meade have a child. Therefore I think Miss Hot Pink Tights is the daughter of the lady beside her, who has been identified as Rosie Meade. I don't think Charlotte was present that day, and she may have been taken home for her nap before the picnic on the second day, where there is also a just visible child near George's size. Or maybe Charlotte was asleep in her stroller that day. I suspect hers, which William appears to manage, is different from the stroller Laura was pushing. Reading Nancy Drew all those years ago was good preparation for participating in this blog!

      Delete
    3. It does look like Rosie Meade. Her husband is participating in the horse events and Laura Meade, Rosie's sister-in-law, is with Kate so why wouldn't that be Rosie? It does not seem probable that Maria would necessarily be chillin' with the girls. Maria is probably taking some much deserved time off.

I think Charlotte has Carole Middleton's exotic eyes, and Kate's coloring. Her face shape is a lot like the Queen Mum's now, but she is after all a round faced baby. The royal who looks most like QM as an adult is Princess Eugenie. Charlotte has some resemblance to her.

Looks like Charlotte's hair is following the same progression as her brother's in terms of getting lighter! I think she will turn out to be a blonde soon enough too. Sad because I did enjoy that George looks Middleton in his features but Windsor in his coloring, and Charlotte seemed to be Windsor in feature and Middleton in coloring. But her hair is lighter than it used to be, and is around the same shade as George's at the same age, or maybe just a little earlier in his life. But whatever, both are cuties! It does seem like Charlotte is less insistent on walking around than her brother was even at the same age, since I cannot imagine George just sitting in a stroller for an entire event as Charlotte seems to have mostly done on the day the entire family definitely went. Otherwise I imagine there'd be more pictures of her.

    1. I am not sure about the hair color. I do not think Charlotte will go through a true blond stage, George is barely blonde at 3. I think they both will be brown or dark haired children by age 10.

  49. Is it just me or is Kate thinner than ever? Nice to see the family out and about and William not getting on his high horse about photos! I agree that it does not look like Nanny B in the photos and somehow I don't see Kate dressing Charlotte in a ra-ra skirt and cerise tights, Kate usually has Charlotte more coordinated than that. I think it is a friend and their child.

  51. More pictures and information on daily mail. One of Kate holding Charlotte and William holding George.

  52. I think the woman holding George's hand is the same woman shown with Kate in Kensington Park in November of 2012 as the woman pictured (in red coat) in What Kate Wore, 11/5/12 or 11/6/12. Kate wore the Temperley Odele suede coat. I don't know who the blonde woman in the photo is.

  53. That was 11/16/12 for that photo in What Kate Wore.

  55. Kate is so thin. No one is naturally that thin. But she must be on shape to do waht she does

I wonder if that is the nanny in the photo - looks like her to me - and if Charlotte is walking next to her but is hidden by the stroller. Thanks again for excellent reporting.

  58. Nice photos- touching moments of W&K with their children. Charlotte is one moment the Queen’s image in some ways, and another moment Carole’s, and at times Kate’s. I have seen children who gravitate between two families, end up looking more and more similar to the person they see every day/most likely whoever raises them. The effect might be from having similar look topped with personality, facial and general character expression picked up from the adult who they see every day.

It looks to be a lovey day out with friends! I'm sure it was nice to have some down time and just relax. The children are absolutely precious. They are both getting so big! William and Kate looked great too! Houghton Hall is absolutely beautiful! It is a majestic backdrop and so pretty as the sun is setting.

Thanks for the post Charlotte! It's always nice to see an unexpected Royal outing!

  60. I'm sorry I'm late to the post but am confused about the questions of "who's holding George's hand?" Not sure if I'm missing pics, but the only one I see holding George's hand while walking is Kate! Am I missing something?

  61. Thanks for a great post Charlotte. I think that the ID for George's trainers are not right because his have straps like the Clarks Doodles my 3 year old has rather than the laces on the Converse x

I think they meant to the left of George.

Lovely families photos - a great family day. We can hope for polo too. It's so nice to see Kate with the little ones - and I think photos are quite accepted at such an event - Zara and Mia are often photographed at similar events - it's expected.

I visited the stables at Houghton a age ago (before many of you including Charlotte were born - that long) - they had the most beautiful heavy horses then; a Shire and a Suffolk Punch as well as ponies - w wonder if they still do. The house is worth a visit too, but those big boys won my heart - the stableman brought them out into the yard for the children to see and they were as sweet as dogs and so crushed when he called them to go back inside.

  64. Quite a few people seem to be interested in who is who in the picture. By now it seems to have turned into an interesting puzzle game.

    - I don’t think Maria is in these pictures at all.
-The closest image I can think of is Pippa to the left of Kate. It can also be George holding the little girl’s hand, and the little girl holding “Pippa’s” hand.
-The lady pushing the stroller is not familiar at all if that can be said ( She looks like Meade’s wife/somewhat similar figure from the daily mail image)
-The little girl in pink is most likely, if not positively sure, she is not Charlotte. Charlotte turned one year last month. It is unlikely she will be walking spontaneously in the field. She had also been typically dressed with coordinated dress. If it is from the same day, she was dressed in blue.
-The lady in the far left next to “Pippa” may or may not be Carol.
The person who took the picture, please have your say, wherever you are.

    1. The lady with the stroller has been identified as Laura Meade. Most writers are sure that behind her are
Rosie Meade and her little daughter who is almost a year older than George, and therefore larger. The blond lady is unidentified, but may be another member of the Meade family? Are you looking at a very small screen? These ladies don't look at all like the Middletons.

    2. I agree, 16:18.

  65. The lady holding a child's hand opposite Kate is 90% chance she can pass for Pippa. Now looking at the larger photo, the chance that the woman in khaki pants is Carole is 5% to 0.

    1. If Pippa, then who is the child? She is too tall for Charlotte.

    2. For the purpose of completing the puzzle, the child remains as "the child in pink pants". Other than the color of "the child's pink pants", one can say, she is a girl, since her blue dress is partially visible. Some people who are more familiar or researched further had guessed, she is most likely, the Meade's daughter.

    3. It isn't Pippa.

    4. 19:20,

It isn’t Pippa? My guesstimate was at 90% positive. Your concrete statement makes you either a, b, c, d or e.

      a. Pippa herself.
      b. An insider.
      c. The person who took the photo.
      d. An eye witness
      e. One, or more of the above.
      f. None of the above

If f is the correct one, then I still think it is “Pippa”.

    5. Yes, a Meade daughter, most likely. Laura apparently has no child, but Rosie does! There is a rule that the most straightforward answer to a question is usually the right answer.

    6. Finally the riddle is over. Time is everything, may be.

Charlotte had left a clue for the puzzle game. The photographer is Eye contact Photography most likely. What a name for the business of photography.

In the world of blogs, and photography, eye contact can be one way. Photographing this group in their spontaneous activity can be one way eye contact. Direct pose looking at the camera as in Kate for Vogue is eye contact to the camera. The classic Eye contact is between two, or among more people. Yes, eye contact, "the window to the soul".

  66. I wish Kate had official Instagram , Twitter and Facebook accounts like HM Queen Rania of Jordan. HM and her team handle them all so beautifully and it makes her seem so much more approachable.

  67. I do must say I find that Kate hasn’t been looking herself lately. Some days better, some days not so good based on their public appearances. Despite the makeup and hairstyle, and beautiful outfits, she looks a little drained, dehydrated, and, as a result, a bit older than her age. Before people start throwing tomatoes at me I will admit I am very fond of Kate and she has been a huge inspiration for me all around ☺ On top of that I think she is naturally a very beautiful person. Kate is so young and I am sure having small children can be very physically and emotionally demanding. On that note, I hope she gets the best pampering there is because she deserves it.
It’s so good to see the family out and about outside of the special events. It is rare to see anything of Kate anymore (private candids), I am guessing because she is being a protective mom, and Charlotte is still so little. Nonetheless, I hope she does not stay cooped up.
