Elegant Kate in Red Preen Dress for Government House Reception

Following a day of engagements in beautiful Bella Bella, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge returned to Government House to spend time with George and Charlotte, before attending a reception hosted by the Province of British Columbia at Government House.

The Duchess made a stylish entrance.

Tonight's reception has been dubbed as the most formal event on the tour itinerary. Hosting an event at Government House seemed an ideal choice for a number of reasons aside from its prominence as the residency of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. It is serving as the Cambridges' base throughout the tour, allowing them to travel back and forth from engagements to spend as much time with the children as possible. In terms of privacy throughout their stay it was an ideal choice.

It stands in the provincial capital on a 14.6 hectares (36 acres) estate at 1401 Rockland Avenue; while the equivalent building in many countries has a prominent, central place in the capital, the site of British Columbia's Government House is relatively unobtrusive within Victoria, giving it more the character of a private home. The property is owned by the Queen in Right of British Columbia; as with other Crown property, Government House is held in trust for future rulers and cannot be sold by the monarch except by her lieutenant governor with the proper advice and consent from the Executive Council of British Columbia.

The event, the Black Rod ceremony, is steeped in symbolism. Global News reports the Black Rod was created for the British Columbia legislature to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The Black Rod is used in the legislature when the Queen or Lieutenant Governor is present. It has its origins in the British Parliament and is used in Commonwealth countries around the world.

More on the origin of Black Rod and its role in Parliament in England from Wikipedia:

'The office was created in 1350 by royal letters patent, though the current title dates from 1522. The position was adopted by other members of the Commonwealth when they adopted the British Westminster system. The title is derived from the staff of office, an ebony staff topped with a golden lion, which is the main symbol of the office's authority.
Black Rod is best known for his part in the ceremonies surrounding the State Opening of Parliament and the Throne speech. He summons the Commons to attend the speech and leads them to the Lords. As part of the ritual, as Black Rod approaches the doors to the chamber of the House of Commons to make his summons, they are slammed in his face. This is to symbolize the Commons' independence of the Sovereign. Black Rod then strikes the door three times with his staff, and is then admitted and issues the summons of the monarch to attend.
This ritual is derived from the attempt by King Charles I to arrest the Five Members in 1642, in what was seen as a breach of the constitution. This and prior actions of the King led to the Civil War. After that incident, the House of Commons has maintained its right to question the right of the monarch's representative to enter their chamber, although they cannot bar him from entering with lawful authority.'

It is adorned with three rings, representing the province, Canada and the link to the UK. Tonight Prince William added a fourth ring, engraved with eagle feathers and a canoe to symbolise First Nations in the Province.

William and Kate listened to a speech.

The Canadian government describes installing the ring of reconciliation as "embodying the historic relationship of the Sovereign as the guardian and protector of the Aboriginal peoples and to symbolize the reconciliation of all cultures in British Columbia Reception Hosted by the Province of British Columbia".

The reception was attended by leaders from British Columbia's legislature, government and judiciary. Below, the Duchess mingling with guests.

Now, let's talk about Kate's look tonight! The Duchess looked stunning a 1950s style red gown by Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. It's the first time Kate has worn a piece by the British brand. Brought together by a shared love of Victoriana, Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi launched Preen to instant success in 1996. Romantic but contemporary, their collections are worn by Kate Bosworth, Michelle Obama and Scarlett Johansson. In less than a decade the brand has gone from one boutique on London's Portobello Road to a fashion week and celebrity favourite.

The Finella Satin Midi Dress is crafted from heavyweight satin and has a classic fit-and-flare silhouette that's elevated with a wide asymmetric hemline, front pleated wrap, and box pleats at the skirt. The gown is in available in very limited sizing at Matches and Net-A-Porter for $1,715.

The dress comes from the Pre-AW16 collection and is inspired by the late Deborah Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, an English writer, memoirist and socialite. She was the youngest and last surviving of the six Mitford sisters, who were prominent members of English society in the 1930s and 1940s. The Finella is described as "oozing a grandeur that she would approve of".

The Duchess accessorised with the Queen's Maple Leaf Brooch.

Kate wore her Baroque Pearl Double Sided Earrings by Soru Jewellery. They are described: "18ct Yellow gold vermeil on sterling silver earrings for pierced ears. Hand crafted with iridescent baroque pearls edged with multi faceted Swarovski crystals. Slight natural variances may occur between colours, shapes and sizes of the gemstone."

It is thought Kate carried a bespoke version of the Jenny Packham Casa clutch in red.

The Duchess wore her red suede Gianvito Rossi pumps.

This look was easily one of Kate's best to date in my opinion. The dress is perfection on her; the colour, 1950s style, the silhouette, the off-the-shoulder detailing the Duchess has come to favour. The look was beautifully polished off with an elegant chignon and red accessories, and Kate's Soru earrings added a chic finish to a very memorable look. Effortlessly regal. What are your thoughts?

  1. Wow, Wow, Wow! Kate looks just stunning. I love this look so much. Breathtaking... . the fit, length, the color.
    I think she nailed it!

  2. The duchess looks Ravishing in RED! loved the whole ensemble! I too thought it was a Jenny packham clutch. I have the silver one she carried in the Spectre premiere and it is gorgeous! it's quite larger than it looks in pics.

  3. WOWZA! GLA-MO-ROUS! She looks absolutley fantastic! What a great and cohesive look. Elegant but youtful. Mixing the more traditional elements (the brooch, the hair, the shoes, the silouette of the dress) with the more young ones (the earrings, the purse, the neckline). What a great look! She looks timeless without looking from another time. The shoes would have been fun if they were strappier but they are neither black nor nude, and the dudes are in buissness suit so strappy shoes with her already a bit overdressed look might have been too much. I think it looks very elegant. And I love the "swoop" of the skirt. Very flowy without being too 50s. I agree fully with you characterizing it as one of her top looks of all time!

Nice to see the brooch again! I mean.. it's a very specific brooch so why not get good use of it when schlepping it along with you half around the globe!

Yet another great day of the tour and am looking forward to the rest of it!

    2. Rebecca,

"timeless without looking from another time", very nicely put.

And since the men ("dudes", lol) were in business suits strappy shoes would have been wrong, I agree.

Agree that they should make full use of the maple leaf brooch after "schlepping it along half way around the globe", lol.

    3. Rebecca I love it "The Dudes" :) xo

  4. This is pure sartorial perfection. Quintessentially chic. Royal simplicity.

So happy she went on with some cleavage, I was so tired of her " bottoned-up-to-the-neck" style she lately favoured.

And the inspiration behind the dress ads a nice touch.

    Well done.

  5. I agree, it is definitely one of her best looks. Elegant and beautiful, whilst showing just the right amount of flesh, like a true lady.
I might have gone for different earrings, but that is purely personal taste.
So far, the tour is a style home run!

  7. Beautiful!! I can't believe this was happening 3 blocks from my house. I drove past earlier today and saw guards st every gate and a small crowd on the sidewalk, I suppose hoping to catch a glimpse of the motorcade returning from the airport. Love this dress! Thanks for the speedy post (isn't it the wee hours of the morning where you are?!). Cheers.

  8. Oh there are no words for this magnificent sight. She is beyond beautiful and elegant. How does she do it? While I thought William looked a bit tired after such a long day, Kate looked fresh and positively gorgeous. She is our princess.

  9. I think she looks absolutely gorgeous. A slightly different hairstyle, and a bit less eye make up would crown it all.

She is very very slim, her arms reminds me of Q Letizia, toned but skinny:( This is an observation too:))

  10. A stunningly gorgeous dress....love the hair and accessories....but my goodness Kate does look so thin here....maybe it's the camera angles though....wonderful presentation all the same :-)

  11. This is one of my favourite looks on her ever. She has absolutely knocked it out of the park. After yesterday's lace Alexander McQueen dress I was a little sad. This is enough to get me through the week! She reminds me of the young Princess Elizabeth in one of her pictures, don't you think? Stunning! Making this Canadian proud!

  12. Dress, hair, jewellery - absolutely stunning!!! Shoes, no, no, no!!! You don't wear a pair of boring court shoes with a dress this stunning. They are day shoes. This is night time. Argh.

    1. The men were in buissness suits. Kate's dress was already on the side of overdressed. I think the day shoes were the right choice. This way she's slightly overdressed (as is ok for a royal) but doesn't feel like she's dressed for another party than the other guests :)

  22. She's really spoiling us this tour and I think you can see how confident she is in her role now. We've had perfect polish at the airport, slightly edgy design, stylish casual and now timeless evening wear. Can't wait to see what comes next!

  23. In situations such as the one in relation to the Black Rod ceremony, perhaps not reading one's briefing book is tactful. (I don't really believe that.)

  24. This is only the 2nd time I have posted as a follower for a very long time and I feel a bit bad about being negative. I do think the color of the dress is beautiful, but there is something about the way it drapes on her left side that just seems off to me. And the beautiful brooch just seems to hang off the dress. When I look at the entire package (dress, earrings, brooch, clutch, shoes), they just don't seem to all come together. Maybe no brooch and a statement necklace with a beautiful bracelet might have worked for me. I think her side chignon is beautiful, but from the front it appears very severe, making her look much older than she is. Looking forward to more positive remarks down the road...Marianne in Montana

  25. I love the dress.she looks stunning but i wish she had worn gold shoes instead of red like the model in the picture.Too much of red.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I would not like the gold shoes, especially with the maple leaf brooch. I like the red shoes, but it looks as if someone spilled a cocktail on one of them. Are these the same shoes Kate wore in Vancouver? I thought those were more orangey. But if they are, perhaps she got splattered by rain.

  26. Stunning! Charlotte, I'm not sure if anyone can capture Kate's look better than you did above, "The dress is perfection on her; the colour, 1950s style, the silhouette, the off-the-shoulder detailing, beautifully polished off with an elegant chignon and red accessories, and Kate's Soru earrings added a chic finish to a very memorable look." Need I say more? I'd like to watch the video of her entering the room. She appears a little nervous - I wonder if she knew how stunning the entire look would be when it call came together.

Her make up is exquisite as well. Loved the change up with the fabulous side chignon - and what's more it looks pretty than most of her up-dos. She really goes for a monochromatic look but it really works. And the dress just really fits her well. On the model it seemed out of proportion.

I would have added the diamond bangle bracelets that the Queen Mum had. Heck - why not?

  27. I love this outfit! This red dress really suits the Duchess! It has an Audrey Hepburn vibe to it! I like this hairstyle and this chignon helped in placing the dress on centre stage. I love the minimal look - the earrings, the Maple leaf brooch and the clutch bag. I have to say that both day 3 outfits are favourites! :)

  29. Very Audrey Hepburn like. Regal, demure, dazzling red. Elegant simplicity.

Never a fan of a side chignon, but otherwise it is
very pretty and sweet, and as Charlotte said, one of her best looks so far.

I would continue to do so, had it not been for this just impossibly beautiful dress. I am quite without right kind of words to express how magnificent she looks. I was in love with her arrival outfit, I thought her red and white dress what so girlish and fresh, and as always I love the way she dresses when it comes to outdoorsy endeavours.
But this... This is on a whole other level! One of her best ensembles ever!

  39. What a great look! For me, the best part of it is Kate's hair. I think she looks amazing! It's really a gift that she looks wonderful in so many different colours - the blue on the arrival day was perfection and this red is great too. Each of the colours seems to accentuate something in her personality. My favourite is blue but that's because it's my most favourite colour in general.

  40. Love this look on Kate. Such an elegant shape and length dress.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Although the models have the straps of the dress off shoulder, if you look closely at those photos, the straps are bunched when they put them off shoulder. The straps were meant to be worn just as Kate wore them. I like the dress that way but if the dress had actually been designed the way the models wore the straps that would be even better, although Kate probably couldn't have worn it in an official capacity then. It is a very beautiful dress either way.

Again Kate, to me, seemed a little pre-occupied or sad or something, not quite as vivacious as usual and outgoing. She has been that way since they stepped off the plane on day one. Maybe the Pippa thing has her down a little. There were photos of she and William and of the children also.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dress and hair are lovely! The accessories are not balancing with the simplicity of the dress.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love the dress on Kate, nice 1950's retro vibe going on there and her hair looks lovely. I don't mind the bag and shoes, although maybe a contrasting colour would have been nicer.

Only one nitpick and that is I really don't like those earrings. The diamond ones on loan from the Queen that Kate has worn a few times would have been perfect with the dress and brooch.

    ReplyDelete
  44. "Effortlessly regal", pretty much sums Kate up in general, I think, Charlotte.

Certainly in this gown, for sure. Nicely put.

  45. Lovely!! This suits her so beautifully and fits like a glove. Her arms! She is stunning. A more exciting shoe, diamond earrings and one of her big diamond bracelets would have been fun, and a red lip is too much to hope for, but wow this was great!!

  46. Stunning; 'nuff said! Really, I much prefer Catherine's hair when it is up.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Gorgeous dress !!! I like it so much !!
the only problem are the red shoes. Heeled sandals like the picture with the model would have been more better. Fashion faux pas for me with shoes but the dress...oh my god beautiful !
I like too the hair from the Duchess

  48. Perfect! I think Kate looked perfect & I loved every single thing about her look.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This dress is perfection, especially on Kate. Wow! I love the 50s silhouette and the color. I also really like her hair here.

My one complaint would be the shoes. I don't love the red shoes, although I adored them with her previous outfit. I much preferred the strapy shoes shown on the model and would have loved something similar on Kate. I think it would have dressed the whole look up a bit and been younger. But that is a picky observation.

The look was beautifully polished off with an elegant chignon and red accessories, and Kate's Soru earrings added a chic finish to a very memorable look. Effortlessly regal." 54. Unbelievably beautiful! The midi-length and box pleats, red shoes( now this is where those shoes really shine, not with the short red and white McQueen so much - here they are grown-up and so very elegant), her side chignon, the earrings (better with this ensemble than the first she wore them with imo), and her make-up which looks SO wonderful on her - everything is just flawless elegance. She is like a modern Grace Kelly in this beautiful dress!!! Love that she's wearing the brooch again too. And Wills looks SO great! His blue suit really sets off her red dress. Just wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  55. What a gorgeous dress!. I am not a big fan of those red shoes with the dress. I didn't love the shoes with the day dress either, because the colors were off. With the evening dress, they are a good color match, but it's too matchy matchy for me. I'd stick with these awesome shoes as an accent (black dress with a red scarf, maybe?).

    ReplyDelete
  56. HOME RUN. There is nothing else to say. I love this silhouette on her as opposed to the sheaths she favors. The hair is perfection. I wouldn't have thought to pair these earrings with this dress, but I love the whole thing. A THOUSAND TIMES YES.

  58. Wow, Kate just oozes elegance. The dress is beautiful, the cut, the fit, again the words perfect and stunning come to mind. Everything works with this look. The earrings from a distance looked like they were a feather shape, very appropriate. Love the shoes and the new clutch, just the right amount of sparkle. The side chignon is very sleek and in keeping with the lines of the dress. Her skin is absolutely glowing! The simplicity of this look make it look effortless. That's Kate's strength....her ability to move from one activity and look to the next with such ease and grace. Definitely a lovely look for the Duchess. cc

  60. Kate is breathtaking!! Absolutely flawless from head to toe. The earrings, the hair, and the dress are just gorgeous. I like the length of the dress, perfect for a cocktail party. This is one of the best looks Kate has ever worn, IMO. (The only possible nitpick I might have is the placement of the brooch by an inch or two, but it's no big deal) . Bravo Kate!

  62. Just a thought that popped into my mind, I wonder if Kate assists Her husband in selecting his wardrobe for these trips. 64. The color is beautiful and her makeup and hair is perfect. She is really good at making sartorial choices that are respectful of the occasion/host. Even with so much good I thought this was a miss. The dress though beautiful didn't sit well around her neckline, or something else is amiss there. This was too much red in accessories, the clutch and shoes take it a bit overboard. I think her silver clutch (from Spectre premiere) would have looked better with the brooch, and this time I think she could have worn her nude shoes, if she didn't want to wear metallic shoes as the model.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I really like this look. She is so pretty and the style of the dress is fantastic. One of the better looks for her like you said Charlotte.

Another new designer to read up on and with a fascinating history. I like the model wearing the gold shoes with it, it would have been great if Kate had worn something similar in the shoe but that is a minor issue. Maybe in the next re-wear because this look definitely deserves another outing.

She really favors these earrings as I believe this is the 3rd time she has worn them.

    ReplyDelete

  68. I love the color, I'm a redhead so feel I can't wear red lol. I don't love the length on her. I love the dress but wish she got it made longer for this particular event. I don't like the medi length on anyone though. To me the length just looks sort of awkward. I like these earrings but not for such a formal event. Especially being made out of sterling silver. Which is what costume jewelry is made of. I wish she went with a red clutch that matched a bit better, or black. Matching shades of red is hard. Just like she tried to do with the white and red dress the other day. The red clutch and shoes were nice, but it made the red on the dress look almost orangey. i don't mind her hair, but I wish she would do other undos than a low bun/chignon all the time! In general though a nice look

  69. Superb! The beautiful Duchess from the arrival is back. Her shoes look a bit rroughed up, and she needs to learn the perfect placement of a brooch. I might have preferred the silver clutch. But those are minor quibbles. The gown is very beautiful, and a great compromise length. The connection with Debo Devonshire might be a subtle nod to the Prince of Wales, since they were great friends.

I also very much like the lieutenant governor's dress, decorated with native art. Is there a better picture and a description of its depicted symbolism?

The Duke had a duty which stirred up controversy when he placed the new ring on the black rod, and I am confused as to which chief attended the ceremony in the end. The opening of the Commonwealth Games and the inauguration of the Spruce Meadows track in Alberta included strong appeals to the Crown, in the person of the Queen herself, to redress wrongs described by the First Nations. Those are just examples I happened to witness; there must be many others. William was placed in a position to carry out a piece of diplomacy which provided an opportunity to express grievances in the presence of the Queen's representative. He appears to have carried it off calmly, but did he speak?

Absolutely amazing - I love it!!!! That dress is perfect for her - and she is someone who can wear that length.

My only wish would have been red satin shoes with diamante or possibly silver or diamante shoes - and maybe the clutch in diamante, but the dress and maple leaf and hair are so right - the neckline is so gorgeous - Kate's neck is so lovely it needs no necklace and the inspiration is so fantastic (sometime look up Debo's comments on hosting Prince Charles for breakfast.)

While real diamond earrings would have been perfection, these earrings are lovely and look wonderful on Kate - and that updo - so elegant. Just like the first day, those updos are really adding a new level of sophistication. And Kate's beauty is enhanced by strong simple lines like this - it is just such a perfect choice, it makes me happy to look at her.

    1. Here was where diplomacy is dicey re the First Nations chief's boycott. Prince William is caught between a rock and a hard place and all he could do was what he did--go through the ceremony and stand and listen. I read where, in speaking with a young First Nations woman the other day Kate asked her about the suicide rate and, according to the woman, really listened. They may not read all of the playbook--like what Diana did or didn't do--but they know the important issues.

They both look so relaxed and happy this week it is a pleasure to log on and see, a respite from all the daily events happening in the world today. I was just thinking if I was a photographer on any trip with William and Kate you would only have to position yourself behind William to get a fantastic picture of Kate, she never fails to light up when she looks at him. I wish them both the very best in their lives and I sincerely hope they enjoy their trip and have many wonderful memories.

  85. A lovely choice. I know some will suggest that it needs a necklace; however, I'm partial to the neck and collar bones exposed the way this dress shows them to perfection.

I thought some readers (and potential visitors to Victoria, BC) might like to know that there is a Costume Museum in the old Mews on the grounds of Government House. In addition to gowns worn at Government House and various accessories, it also has a room featuring military uniforms over the years.

    https://fghgs.ca/the-mews/costume-museum/

When royals or others requiring protection are not in residence the public may enjoy the grounds of Government House from sunrise to sunset. Scheduled guided tours of the house itself are given by appointment, and all summer long concerts are held weekly on the lawns. I visited there this summer and enjoyed it immensely. I was in the rooms Charlotte posted earlier in the week and got a good long look at the art on the walls, furnishings and the photos of other visitors from the Royal Family displayed across the piano. No doubt, next summer William, Catherine, George and Charlotte's photo will be displayed there. (I intend to find out.)

In addition, on a fine day the views from the balconies of the Olympic Mountain range across the Strait of Juan de Fuca are stunning.

  86. I love this dress, but the red shoes and bag are overkill. Black strapped sandals would have looked much more elegant than red suede. Her dresses are always lovely, but her shoe game is way off!!!

  87. What a gorgeous dress! I love everything about it. The Duchess looks spectacular.

  88. Everything looked great until I got to the shoes. I think she ruined the whole look with the red suede courts. The elegant and refined satin of the dress really calls for something other than a heavy looking day shoe. So many gorgeous sandals out there that could have elevated this oufit. Even a slingback or peep toe shoe would have worked beautifully. Also, not a fan of the gold tone earrings worn with this brooch and purse. Kind of a mish madh of accessories going on here.

On the plus side, the dress is lovely and her off center chignon is perfection. It is much younger and less stern than when her updo is centered.

    3. Erika, I'm in agreement with you on the shoes.
The best evening shoes Kate has EVER worn (in my humble opinion) were the Jimmy Choos with that KILLER, PERFECT, AMAZING dark red pedicure, twice, with the cream Mouret gown (first wearing) and then again with the teal gown at the British Olympic gala event.
Young, stylish women wearing equally stylish pedicures is a thing that's done nowadays, regardless of social class or status.
Other royal ladies wear colored pedicures and I wish Kate would assert her stylish side and get a great, classic, dark red pedi and wear appropriate open-toed evening heels with these gowns.
As you noted, the daytime courts look heavy and while I love these shoes on their own, it's too matchy-matchy for my taste.

Nitpicking - I would have preferred it worn off the shoulder as shown on the model. And I think she missed a golden opportunity to wear some massive, priceless, straight out of the royal vault diamond and ruby earrings! They would have taken this to another level. lol, yep, it is about time to winterize patios.

If you look at how the straps bunch when pulled off the shoulder like that, it shows the dress wasn't tailored to be worn that. I think having the straps off the shoulder is stunning and wish they had actually designed to straps to be worn that way. Might have been a little risqué for Kate to wear like that, but maybe not.

  92. Wow! The polished, magnificent Kate from Day 1 returns! What a spectacular dress, and I'm so glad she chose the red option and not the black one. Up until quite recently I thought that cocktail dresses were one of Kate's weaker areas - she never quite seemed to have found a style that worked for her - but with the Barbara Casasola one and now this, I think she might finally have nailed it. You go girl!

My only two very minor gripes are that I'm not a big fan of these earrings (just personal taste I guess) and she could easily have saved a few pennies by using the silver version of the Casa clutch that she already owns, which would have toned in with the maple leaf brooch perfectly.

Other than that, another resounding success. I agree wholeheartedly Charlotte - one of Kate's best to date. More classy looks like this (well, not cocktail dresses obviously) for the rest of the tour and we'll be well and truly spoiled!

Also, does anyone know why their visit isn't really being reported in Canada? I just came back from a visit to Montreal and I couldn't find one news article about this visit in the Montreal newspapers, even the Gazette.

    1. If you read the articles completely THEY are not being snubbed. It was one chief whose tribes felt he shouldn't go because of a quarrel with the Canadian gov't

    2. Some of the First Nations leaders have refused to attend events as a protest... I haven't followed too closely, but there are a lot of political issues with First Nations in all parts of Canada relating to pipelines, historical mistreatment, and many social problems. Also, the royal family isn't quite as well-followed in Quebec compared to the rest of the country. Lots of history there, too!

    3. I've been watching CTV's Live Streaming of Events & they have video clips of Broadcasters Covering The Tour, including their special "Royal" & their "Fashion" Correspondants. However I have no idea of the scope & reach etc of CTV News!? They do have an article on their website about the rebuffing of some of The Chiefs & they clarify they mean No Disrespect to W&K but feel W&K are being used as Pawns for Trudeau & his Government who have not been true to their Campaign Promises to The First Nations that have not been honored. He goes on to say This Tour is being used by Trudeau to Whitewash the reality & via The Tour, that The Tour PR is promoting an allusion of a better relationship between The First Nations & Trudeau's Government than truly exists. It was an interesting read & he said they struggled with the decision, but in the end most found they could not support The Ring Ceremony that took place last night. While interesting, an outsider (like myself) doesn't know enough of the facts or the subtlties to pick up on adgendas etc. Perhaps our Canadien DKB Friends can add more info or offer more clarity?

    4. Stewart Phillip, the British Columbia First Nations grand chief, declined to participate in the Black Rod ceremony with William on Monday, to protest what the chiefs said they feel is the delay of the Trudeau government to make good on campaign promises over fishing and land rights and to improve social services among the tribes of the First Nations. There is also dispute over a Canadian Supreme Court decision on land rights, that folks in Canada probably know the details of better than I do.
Phillip made a rather asinine comment about the Black Rod ceremony, rather unnecessarily pointing out that the ceremony was symbolic and didn't represent actual reconciliation.
I'm sure it was embarrassing to the queen as well as to William and Kate to be so publicly dragged into what is purely a Canadian political dispute.

      Delete
    5. One portion of the First Nations does not agree with the Black Rod ceremony and what it represents (I don't know all the details) so chose not to participate but others are there. The royal visit is being widely reported in Canadian media but Montreal is in Quebec and people in that province are not fond of the monarchy, so I guess it is not considered news-worthy.

      Delete
    6. The chief feels that it would be hypocritical for him to celebrate gov't representatives when he sees the lack of concern from said gov't to the issues of poverty and exploitation, particularly of women and girls, of his people. It's better stated here: http://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/714745/Duchess-Cambridge-Prince-William-Preen-dress-Canadian-First-Nations-event

As to the lack of media attention in Canada, I can only speculate that the Cambridges aren't seen as particularly newsworthy. I expect that will change as William nears the throne and their charitable efforts show results.

    9. There is plenty of media attention to this tour in Canada. All media outlets are covering it and show arrivals at various events. Their arrival on Saturday was covered entirely by multiple media outlets. I am in Toronto and not the west, so coverage is not only limited to the west.

    10. Philly - yes, but the Montreal Gazette is an English language newspaper. Traditionally, the English in Quebec have always been very supportive of the Monarchy. I was surprised not to see much coverage of this tour in the English media in Quebec. It's been years since I moved from my hometown of Montreal to the UK, and a lot of my Canadian friends have been telling me that support for the Monarchy in Canada has been waning the last few years. I'm starting to believe it.

  97. Kate needs to soften up her "solemn serious" look. She did that look at the Chinese State dinner, etc. She has done it a lot. Yes, many events call for solemnity but that expression goes beyond that. She needs to work on that expression and lighten it up considerably because she will have lots and lots of those events in her future. You can have a pretty yet solemn look.

Becca Deacon, if you are listening, please help Kate. Her current "solemn serious" look undoes all good PR efforts in an instant. And it already has people asking questions.

    1. Sorry, what are you talking about?

    2. Who exactly is asking questions? Solemn serious? I'm baffled. Kate is respectful and appropriate. Kate looks friendly. Always.

      Delete
    3. Becca isn't the best go-to person for helping anyone soften up a serious look.
I think this is the first time that I've seen Rebecca Deacon smile in the five years we've seen her in public with Kate. She usually looks like she really can't wait to be away from the unwashed throngs of peasants.
I continue to think that this tour wasn't Kate's first choice, that perhaps they were ordered to go on this tour, rather than getting to choose and there probably are logistical issues that maybe aren't to her liking.
The tone of this tour seems different than on all of their past tours, less interaction with the public, less hands-on that we usually see them, less activity and less variety than they usually have in a tour. It just doesn't seem "them," if that makes even a little sense.

      Delete
    4. Have you every looked at the Queen's face in repose? She herself even calls it her Miss Piggy look! It doesn't seem to have damaged her PR. :-)

      Delete
    5. It is easily remedied with just a realization of what not to do expression wise and then practice what to do.

      Delete
    6. I recall criticism when there was a hint of a smile on solemn occasions, despite the fact that other royal ladies were sharing the moment. As 23:02 pointed out, the Queen has managed. Besides, Camilla holds the "Queen of Smiles" title.

      Delete
    7. Kate would not have a choice on where to tour. Tours are done at the request of the queen or government or invitation from other countries. Thid tour came as an invitation from the Canadian Prime Minister.

      Delete
    8. Elizabeth,

My guess is that the thrust of motivation for the Canadian government in offering William and Kate a visit was to somehow get William and Kate (even if only by photo ops) to spearhead, as representives of the Crown, Canada's intense "reconciliation" efforts with the indigenous people. I don't think Kate was quite expecting all that and, I personally, do think she liked it. A lot of Canada is Crown property and a lot of Canada the Queen owns outright. So the natives saying they welcome the Crown to "their" property was actually very strange. If you follow the native's train of thought then watch out because here come the Vikings to claim back most of Britain, France etc., etc.

      Delete
    9. About this not being Kate's first choice. How on earth can we know? She could be having her period (no I am not talking hormones, I am talking the constant concern over where is the bathroom and will everything hold together), George and Charlotte might be cranky, she might herself be questioning the disconnect between glitzy politics and the poverty of First Nations, etc., etc.... I don't think they were "ordered" to go on the tour but they may not have realized how they would be manipulated by certain politicians. And Elizabeth, the lack of hands on is coming from their "hosts" who keep shuffling them along when they would clearly like to be among the people. It's election year for Christy Clark and (in my opinion) she is shamelessly using W & K to showcase herself.

      Delete
    10. I tend to agree with the political agenda, Valerie. As a mother I would be concerned with taking my young children overseas, then being out and about all day and not spending much time with them, whilst they were in an unfamiliar environment. That would stress me. But I might be completely wrong. What do we know?

      Delete
    11. Wow! The more I read from you all the more I learn. This could be a very loaded Tour with lots of undertows that Kate doesn't appreciate. Actually I can think of nothing more offense to these 2 than to feel they are being manipulated by another Government...sad to ruin the fun, as it seemed to be such a great fit with all the Beautiful Scenery that they were scheduled to see. The more I learn, it does seem like they are being trotted out for political purposes on both sides. It's something I've not picked up on or felt during any of their other tours! I agree that they would probably love being let more loose to do what they do best & to enjoy the amazing natural wonders. As always they are being gracious, making the best of it, doing a Stand Up Job & Doing The Crown Proud! :) (& us too :) xo
Oh - & PS. Elizabeth, You had me Actually laughing out loud with "Here Come The Vikings"! lol lol lol xo

    12. This particular event involved serious political symbolism, and I think the very solemn picture of Kate was probably taken during the black rod ceremony. It reminds me of her look during the national anthems at the Chinese state dinner, when there were also important considerations and she was in a position of diplomatic sensitivity at the table. That is going to be increasingly true as time goes along, and obviously it is a growing concern to William and Catherine.

This was in a way a grievance meeting. Flaunting "Colonial Bling" in front of the Native people at this ceremony would have been ridiculous.

    4. I gather that there's a pretty strict - and detailed - protocol in the royal family about what to wear when and how much, regarding jewelry, particularly and especially the big statement jewelry.
In addition, many pieces in the queen's collection have been remade into smaller, less gaudy pieces and/or broken up and remade into completely different pieces.
As the royal pecking order goes, Kate is still only the wife of the heir to the heir to the throne. She's not the wife of the Prince of Wales nor a royal in her own right. When neither the queen herself nor Camilla nor people like the Princess Royal go swanning about in heavy jewels at every event, it's certainly not appropriate for Kate to be doing so. To her credit, she knows that.

  115. Meh. Love the color, like the styling in general but I am not a fan of the neckline. I like the concept of this gown, just not the neckline.
This gown, as did the McQueen, seems to wear Kate vs. Kate dominating the gown.
I've read a couple of comparisons to our First Lady, Michelle Obama, who has impressive arms and biceps.
One of the reasons Mrs. Obama looks good in bare-arm gowns is because, in addition to that toned muscle, there's also a bit of flesh to her arms as well and that gives the wearer some presence, vs. a slight, skinny frame that fades into the gown.
Kate prefers to be skeletally thin (albeit apparently healthy) so she needs to choose gowns that don't overwhelm her frame by their color or design, ie the McQueen dress that swallowed her with a busy pattern AND lots of tiers/ruffles.
I love the shoes but, again, not with this gown. She should have gone with something neutral, a gold or bronze selection as the gown is styled in the photo.
And I get - we ALL get - that she's in Canada. She can put aside the brooch maybe until the final departure ceremony or photo op. It's just a tiny bit too much.
I was also hoping we'd get a look at the queen's enamel maple leaf brooch, that she wore on her past visits to Canada.
This seems more like Natasha Archer's vision of what someone would wear to a drinks reception vs. Kate's idea.
Kate's idea of things was embodied, I believe, in the Jenny Packham recycle at Houghton Hall that was simply perfect in every way, from the gown to the jewelry, etc.
There are definite signs of when Kate is styling herself completely and when she's asking for opinions or help from Natasha Archer. I sense that she's still uncertain of her role and what is appropriate (despite repeated reports that she acts more regal than the Windsors themselves sometimes) and thus relies on Archer for style advice.
And I much prefer Kate being her own stylist or even Pippa helping her or even going to the experts at British Vogue (as Diana did later) or someone like Sarah McQueen for style advice.

  116. "Effortlessly regal", Charlotte, I agree.

  118. I was disappointed I was really hoping she was going to use this night and opportunity to show case a First Nations Canadian designer. Since they were adding the new ring to represent the connection between the Crown, First Nations peoples and the people of BC to the black rod. I think that would have been a nice touch and great way to use her fashion to mark the cause.

That being said she look absolutely stunning, I love the neckline cutout. 1 of my 10 top favorite looks of hers.

  119. Love her look but she over did it with the red shoes..would have knocked it out of the park with strappy sandals :) it would be lovely if she experimented a bit more with shoes..anyone agree? Otherwise she looks fabulous

    1. I agree.. the matchy clutch didn't go so well too. She should've gone with silver matching her brooch. The dress was amazing on her.

    2. Not a fan of the shoes. Hate actually. She looks beautiful but I'm not a fan of the dress at all. I like it better in black. However, she wore red and that's very appropriate. I don't like her in the orange-red color. She looks much better in lipstick red. Love the length of the dress but that's about it. Still....she looked beautiful.

  120. Montreal and the French in particular is not Royal friendly,I am in Toronto and the English carrying channels are all over it. All the papers are printing coverage of the Tour. TV stations are all talking about them. Canada is a big country and the Provinces are different time zones.

    1. I disagree. The English in Montreal have always been very pro-monarchy. It's a political thing. This has changed the last few years - slowly, support for the Monarchy has been declining all over Canada.

  121. No offence to anyone, but if you don't know much about either Canadian history or geography, perhaps you should stick to the fashion comments. I'm not sure if it is ridiculous (so I should just laugh it off) or bordering insulting what some of the comments above say. If you don't have time to check your facts, please don't pull a Trump style assertion.

There are statements available for those interested in the facts about the First Nations Chiefs' decision to not meet with the royals. Google it please

  123. I didn't comment earlier as I would have been first, and I didn't want to lead with a negative. I have read the comments since, almost unanimous in their praise for the DoC's look, but when I read Elizabeth's comment 20.34 I agreed with it wholeheartedly. It was almost word for word what I had intended to say! Love the colour, dislike the neckline, too much fabric she is worn by the dress.

  124. Gorgeous. I have to say: I've been hoping HRH would show off a little more skin while still in her 30s. This is a gorgeous winner. Silvia
