It's Casual Kate for a Rainy Day in Bella Bella!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Bella Bella for a day of engagements, getting day three of their royal tour of British Columbia and Yukon underway.

Upon arrival in Bella Bella, the royals were welcomed by the Heiltsuk community in a traditional ceremony. They then made their way to the Wawiskas Community Hall to witness a cultural celebration.

The couple were set to experience views of the wilderness for themselves with an aerial tour of the rainforest in a float plane. Unfortunately, the weather put paid to the tour and all water activities scheduled for the day. CTV News reported: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be met with more than pristine wilderness when they tour B.C.'s rugged central coast: high winds and heavy rain is in the forecast. Up to 40 millimetres of rain will drench Bella Bella Monday, with winds gusting up to 50 kilometres an hour, according to Environment Canada."

Premier Christy Clark shared this photo of William and Kate's arrival and noted "the royals came prepared for the rain".

It's undoubtedly very disappointing to have to cancel some of the events as one of the key aims for the itinerary was very much planned to allow William and Kate to explore the rugged wilderness of Canada's West Coast and the rainforest tour would have given them great insight into the area. Despite the change of plans, the couple were eager to stick to the itinerary as closely as possible. Federal tour co-ordinator Dominique Colin said: "Bella Bella is an incredible place with a wonderful community. We will have a great day…whatever the weather."

Whilst meeting locals chiefs William said: "It wouldn't be the rainforest without the rain, it's authentic! We're very excited to be here. Stunning views."

The Duke and Duchess enjoyed the performances.

The Palace tweeted a photo with the caption: "Children are the real stars of today's welcome."

William and Kate looked quite taken with these adorable babies :)

The local community were excited to welcome the royals.

William and Kate were given blankets and 'dancing vests' by the Heiltsuk people for George and Charlotte.

Next, they walked to Elders Lodge where William marked the dedication of the Great Bear Rainforest as part of the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy initiative.

During his speech Prince William said: "It gives me great pleasure to be here today as the Great Bear Rainforest is officially committed to the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy. By 2018, it is expected that all 53 countries of the Commonwealth will have joined the Queen's Canopy, creating a global network of forests that will benefit indigenous communities, wildlife and tourism now, and into the future. Her Majesty is immensely grateful to you, and the people of Canada, for the leadership you have shown in making this contribution."

The Queen's Commonwealth Canopy is a unique network of forest conservation initiatives, which involves all fifty-three countries of the Commonwealth. It presents a rare opportunity to unite the whole Commonwealth family and save one of the world’s most important natural habitats – forests. Creating a pan-Commonwealth network of forest conservation projects, the QCC will mark Her Majesty the Queen’s service to the Commonwealth while conserving indigenous forests for future generations.

The Great Bear Rainforest is known as the 'Amazon of the North' and stretches for more than 250 miles along the Pacific coast of British Columbia. It is home to the rare Kermode bear, which is deemed to be sacred by the T'simshian people. Also known as the Spirit Bear, it is a sub-species of black bear with white fur.

The temperate rain forest is one of the largest remaining tracts of unspoiled temperate rainforest left in the world. It was officially recognized by the Government of British Columbia in February 2016, when it announced an agreement to permanently protect 85% of the old-growth forested area from industrial logging.

The couple pictured leaving the lodge with smiles as the weather picked up...

...Enough for them to talk a walk down a boardwalk in Great Bear Rainforest.

William and Kate unveiled a plaque to mark their visit.

As expected the Duchess was casually attired for the day.

Kate wore a cream jacket by Holland and Holland. The eagle-eyed What Kate Wore quickly identified it as the brand's Ladies Lightweight Multipocket Safari Jacket. The jacket is made from lightweight Sahara cotton and features four patch pockets on the front, with a center back vent opening into a split at the bottom. Cinched in at the waist with a full top-stitched Sahara cotton belt, it originally retailed for $780.

More on the history of Royal Warrant holders Holland & Holland:

'Holland & Holland have been at the pinnacle of British gun making for over a century but the roots of the company are rather unconventional. The founder was not a gunmaker, but a London tobacconist, who happened to be a fine competition pigeon shot. His name was Harris Holland and he started having guns built to order in the 1840s.
By 1850, ‘H. Holland’ was a ‘gun-maker’ and Harris Holland’s successes in the pigeon ring continued to be reported in the press, no doubt aiding sales. With expansion, came a move from King Street to Bond Street, in the heart of fashionable Mayfair.
In 1860, Henry William Holland joined the company as an apprentice. He would become an inventive genius and gifted businessman, helping drive his uncle’s firm forward. He lodged the first of the company’s fifty one patents in 1861and became a partner in 1876, thereby creating ‘Holland & Holland’. During the rest of 19th century the company prospered; notably winning all classes in the 1883 rifle trials held by ‘The Field’ magazine and gaining Royal Warrants from the King of Italy and King George V, among others. In 1885 the name ‘Royal’ was adopted for the firm’s best guns.'

The company now stocks womenswear, menswear and accessories collections.

Kate teamed the jacket with a blue sweater, checked shirt and Zara jeans.

Kate's Closet suggests Kate wore the navy blue Topshop Gingham Print Shirt. The A/W style comes in a lightweight chiffon. It's currently available in all sizes for $65 on the US Site and £34 on the UK site.

Topshop

For those fond of gingham shirts, Topshop also stocks the 'Alexa' Gingham Shirt in blue and red. It's available at Nordstrom and Topshop.

Topshop

The Duchess selected her trusty Penelope Chilvers Long Tassel Boots for the day. The £475 boots remain available and are described: "The original Penelope Chilvers Long Tassel Boot in Spanish vegetable-dyed leather. This handmade boot is cut close to the ankle for a more feminine fit, has a scalloped detail at the zip panel and a leather tassel on the zip pull. It is fully leather lined and has a Goodyear Welted Commando rubber sole."

The boots are becoming something of a tour favourite; the Duchess also wore them for the hike to Tiger's Nest during April's tour of India and Bhutan.

Kate's pretty new earrings are by Canadian designer Pippa Small.  Kate's earrings are the 'Kite' style. What Kate Wore shared news "they are the large size and available at Pippa Small boutiques in London and LA. They are £1,200". Below, the smaller version of the earrings (as you can see there are noticeable differences between these and Kate's) the Small Kite Earrings, 18K gold, available at Piednunola.

The designer "has established a cult following with her striking organic necklaces, rings and earrings. Each covetable piece is designed in London and crafted in Rajasthan, India, by a team of highly skilled goldsmiths and stonecutters". More on Pippa Small from Matches:

'Born in Canada but raised in the English countryside, Pippa Small was naturally drawn to jewellery-making, collecting gems and shells as a child. Later, to fund her anthropology degree, she resumed jewellery design, going on to collaborate with the likes of Gucci and Chloé, before launching her own eclectic, travel-inspired line. Her signatures? Uncut precious stones, talismanic pendants and 18kt Bolivian gold.'

Pippa Small is involved in a number of ethical projects. "I began working on my 'projects' about eight years ago, sure that there would be a way to bring benefit from working with traditional communities. I feel that jewellery has the potential to change lives by working with communities, creating jobs and opportunities, and using design to raise money and awareness. It has given the communities a re-found respect for traditional materials and a sense of self confidence and pride in their creations." You can read more here. I expect this may have been a key factor in attracting Kate to the brand; it's great to see the Duchess championing a Canadian designer!

  • Global News has an arrival video here.
  • Rebecca English posted a video from the welcoming ceremony on Twitter.

Tonight, William and Kate will attend an evening reception hosted by the province of British Columbia at Government House. It is set to be the most formal event on the itinerary and we expect to see Kate in evening/cocktail attire.

  1. She looks gorgeous! So classic, so preppy (in a great way), just radiant, even in the rain. Love the checked shirt under the navy, and her hair is lovely. What beautiful country they are in!!! Must go to Canada (and wear a checked shirt under a navy sweater, lol!) :)

  2. She looks very nice and appropriate :) Great with a Canadian jewelry designer!

Too bad about the weather but I'm sure it will be a great day none the less!

  3. Yay,

The host guy in the black short sleeved shirt
has the little pearlescent "buttons" on the back design of his shirt.

very reminiscent of the "buttons" on Kate's dress yesterday. Someone had commented that they were ugly and childish. I think they were a nod to the same culture indicated on the man's shirt. Kate knows what she is doing. It is not all about fashion.

    Yay, Kate

  4. Such a shame the rainforest tour had to be cancelled but it looked like the Cambridges had a wonderful day nonetheless. Is it me or do Kate's eyed seem to sparkle just that little bit more when doing anything outdoorsy and more casual. It's so obviously much more 'her' than the more formal engagements, even though she's always engaged whatever she does.

  5. Kate raided my closet! I love this look! Pulled together and polished(the earrings! The hair!) but also casual and appropriate for an outdoor day. Plus the layers will be great with the inside and outside events. Excited to see a dressier look(?) tonight.

    1. Katie,

I know, I know. I am super excited about that also. Maybe a BEAUTIFUL cocktail dress? :) (and please, please, please, NOT one Natasha chose).

    2. I really think it is unfair that some keep on negating Natasha. Tastes differ and we really do not know the extent of her styling and whether there are others providing styling.

  6. It's crazy as I've Never said or felt even the Slightest critique of Kate & this is not a critique as much as an observation.. But watching the Live Stream one really gets a different vibe from Kate, as has often been discussed, while her smile lights up a room.. her resting face can seem the exact opposite. The Premiere & others esp Will have off a kind attentive vibe, but for periods of time during all the 3 Days of Events, I've noticed that if Kate doesn't at least have a partial resting smile, she actually to me looks snooty, if I didn't know anything else about her! I even noticed the difference between smiling photos from the last 2 days that show her beaming, but in real time she seamed more reserved & even stand offish! I found this so intriguing! I don't know what she would do to change this & ive not heard or read any complaints over the years from events, just compliments. The observation caught me be surprise & I originally thought it was a fluke but now having observed her Live for 3 Days of Events I thought I'd share my personal observations....

    1. Really? After hours of travel and little rest, not to mention her concern for her small children in a strange place, she looks very pleasant and friendly. It's like you expect her to be sub human.

    2. Becca I think that this trip is a little different. Kate seems less enthusiastic than she normally is. I wonder whether there were some change in plans ? The charities chosen seem to have very little to do with Kate's usual interests. Perhaps she is just less familiar with everything?
The rumor in Canadian NGO circles is that the trip is primarily a show for Trudeau and a big PR exercise for his party and the royals did not get any of their input respected.
My feeling from watching the coverage is that Kate was indeed a bit colder and standoffish than she normally is. She is usually so effusive and engaged with her hosts. Yet when she landed she greeted everyone and then turned her back on the PM to wait for the car. I was a bit struck by that. Did anyone else notice that or am I overreacting?
My spidey sense is that she is not as excited or happy about this trip as she normally is.. Normally you cannot wipe a smile from her face and she is super friendly to everyone. Yesterday she was almost cold with JT when he was walking with her. He was talking a lot and she was silent. I just feel that something is off with this trip. Am I the only one?

    3. She has a bit of (what is called) Resting Bitch Face/RBF. The queen has it as well. Most people, when not smiling or talking, look more or less annoyed. So I think that is what you're seeing :P

      Delete
    4. Interesting. I think she is 'acting a role' somewhat....

      Delete
    5. This is also not a criticism of Kate but most of us are not aware of our "resting" face--we don't tend to look at ourselves in those moments. Many years ago, I attended a workshop (Powerful Communication Skills for Women) and I discovered that I tend to look bored or snooty, too even though I don't feel that way. So, I have learned to make a conscientious effort to relax my face and try to appear more engaged when I know I am being observed. I will also make more effort to nod my head or react to what is happening more frequently. After almost two decades this learned behavior is almost second nature. But, since no one is watching me now, I guarantee I look incredibly bored!! LOL

      Delete
    6. It's not stand offish or snooty. It's just her resting face. Observe the Queen sometimes and you will notice the same. William is often accused of smirking when he purses his lips, but again it's just the way he holds his mouth. The scrutiny of this woman is really unbelievable. She is not perfect but a human being like the rest of us with individual idiosyncrasies.

      Delete
    7. I noticed her face too. When W&K first sat down with Trudeau and his wife, I saw Kate keep her head turned toward the PM and with her eyes, she looked his wife up-and-down as if she were checking her out in an insecure way. My observation caught me by surprise too. I wondered if i knew what I saw until you mentioned this. She kept her eyes down toward the floor, which shut down a wall of communication with her. After a bit, she opened her eyes with an automatic smile. I join here with a personal observation.

      Delete
    8. It's funny because I feel just the opposite. She always seems engaged, in a most charming manner, whether she is just listening to other's remarks, or observing the area. She has always struck me as a very sensitive, caring woman, not in the least imperious, but rather down to earth.

      Delete
    9. I see what you mean, but I think it's comparable to when someone sees you and yells out "smile" and it's irritating because nobody smiles every waking minute!!!!

      Delete
    10. I have noticed that, too but it isn't snooty. I think it is her way of appearing to be very seriously interested in what she is hearing. Give the girl a break, I say. It is all probably supremely boring but she knows her role and her job and she wants to do he best job she can do. I wouldn't want to be Kate for all the jewels in Christendom.

    11. In reply to this and also for general interest--

This ongoing page with live Tour updates has a lot of extras and videos that add to the experience here at Duchess Kate:

      http://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/the-royal-blog-william-kate-and-the-kids-arrive-in-victoria/amp?client=safari

I watched a few of the videos earlier today and noticed the same thing! Snooty wasn't the word that came to mind--more like a disinterested resting face. I don't want to make assumptions considering I know my resting face is me looking bored and disinterested (friends have commented LOL), but it is certainly quite a difference between her resting face and her radiant smile.

      Delete
    12. Becca, I 100% agree! In some of the photos she looks to be angry... Maybe, just like the rest of us her and William have had words ☺

    13. I wonder how much jet lag plays into that - they've kept a pretty brutal pace on day one and day two. On Sunday, I admired how polished they both interacted with so many people, having real short conversations, being involved with everybody they met. I don't know about others, but when I come off a transatlantic flight going west, I am out by 6 pm - not going to a ceremony with a few thousand people, followed by dinner with a Prime Minister and other dignitaries.
Prince William also alluded to the fact that he hadn't had time to fully study his thick briefing portfolio. They must be putting in study time each evening or morning to refresh allthe information pertinent for the day. Not to forget two little ones who were probably up and about at o-dark-hundred due to the time change ...
Their stamina in staying alert, smiling and engaged is amazing - they both are true professionals and beautiful representatives of the British Monarchy.

    14. Anon 22.58 did you notice that William and the GG all had their backs turned to the PM as they waited for their ride. There is not one person who has met them on this tour and everywhere that have not commented on her warmth. I have done the flight from U.K. To Canada numerous times and it really messes with your body clock. They have not had any time to adjust plus they have the kids. Plus all this judgement comes from a few pictures and snippets of video. Judgements been made here of cold and not interested can surely only be made when physically in their presence.

(I've never seen or picked up this vibe on Any Other Tour/Not Even Australia) & Never Ever in Any Video of an Event? That's when I decided to mention something after Day 3 of picking up on this "Non Kate like Feel". I wanted to know if it was just me, or just because I was watching Fully Live Streaming, as opposed to The Pics & Shorter Videos We Normally See? Thx for all the chiming in! :) & Yes, Anon 22:58 I Did Notice What You Did Right @ Their Arrival! That's when it Jumped Out at me & I was Surprised but thought I must be reading too much into it with This Arrival ( including both kids & Jet lag & whatever else She dealt with on the long flight over)! I Truly Didn't Have Any Expectations!..... But After Following Kate Since University, A Sudden "appearant" change in demeanor stood out... At least it gave me pause. So to pick up the same vibe Day 2 & 3? I figured I'd bring it up & see if I was The only one who noticed Anything different, other than our Usual Happy Smiley Very Very Friendly & Always Gracious Kate:) xo

@Becca USA: I am always one of the first to defend Kate (usually in my mind, sometimes in the comments ;-) but yes I'm getting a similar vibe to what you've mentioned too. I ADORE Kate but....yes she seems a bit less "vibrant" on this tour. Perhaps the whole Pippa cell phone hack is weighing on her mind AND the prospect of her upcoming solo trip, plus jet lag & the kids? I'm not saying she should be superhuman & owe the public anything but she does seem a bit solemn, I agree. Not a critique, just an observation.

    21. I actually do not get a negative impression of her on this trip. Agree her resting face can be pretty still:) I saw some lovely interactions between the Trudeaus and William and Catherine which were not for the cameras. The main thing I found on the first day was that both she and William seemed tired. They both looked perkier by the second day and well rested by today. It is possible that Catherine does not naturally vibe with the Trudeaus and some of you who noticed Catherine looking less than involved may have picked up on that. I did not see that as much as just maybe some fatigue.

    22. I'm sorry to see another thread on RBF. No one can maintain an endless smile. Kate is sincere, caring, and she engages people quite easily. She laughs and puts people at ease. But there's also a time to pay attention to what is happening or being said. If she smiled endlessly, it would be labeled phony and insincere, or she would be accused of not taking something seriously. Add jetlag and young children to the mix and I'm not sure anyone could do better.

      Delete
    23. I noticed that also. Probably a combination of concern for Pippa, Jet lag, having the children with them, the busy schedule.

Remember, she even mentioned being concerned and worried, hoping the children
      weren't tearing up Government House.

    24. I have a different thought... I was right by Duchess Kate on Saturday in Victoria and she was very engaged, warm and welcoming. All that after a 8-10 hour flight!! Give her a break!! Then today, all of the reports said that the weather was quite nasty, and their flight to Bella Bella was rather bumpy. I am going to guess that perhaps she may have been a bit motion sick from the flight, but still soldiered on and was a gracious guest to her hosts. Flying in a small plane in less than ideal circumstances will make anyone a bit off their game, and the fact that she pulled it off shows what a true gem she is.

      Delete
    25. I can't find any pictures of Kate in which she does not appear smiling and engaged. Links? I do think in the photo Charlotte used to illustrate the earrings, Kate has dark circles around her eyes that no doubt reflect jet lag and the fatigue of dealing with flights, kids, strange people and places, and an intense schedule. It seemed that perhaps Justin Trudeau came on a bit strong at the airport, and the Cambridges reacted with a certain reserve. He is a vibrant man. But Kate and William both seem quite interested in the people they meet and the area they are exploring. I am glad it was only the weather than held up their plans today - I had been wondering if everything was OK. It is also a long way from Victoria to Bella Bella, and the flight must have been turbulent. I am glad they eventually were able to walk into the rain forest. Altogether, I think they are handling a busy tour very well.

    26. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that she's probably not delighted with this tour, the location, etc.
With Brexit, the crown is rushing to cement the Commnwealth relationships it has and I'd expect this tour was more a duty than a choice, however it's being spun. They couldn't very well repeat their 2011 tour and locations so the western coast was the next place to go.
I'm sure the stress of hauling two small children, even with nannies and a huge entourage of support staff, halfway around the world on a 10-hour flight, then trying to get them settled into a new and unfamiliar albeit temporary home is also stressful.
I'd think that the situation with Pippa and her photos is also on her mind, considering how fiercely Will and Kate guard their privacy and that of their children.
This tour seems to be less hands-on than past tours, more sit or stand and look and listen and look interested.
She seemed pretty frosty and even a bit annoyed when they deplaned, kind of like "Okay, fine, I'm here. I just dragged two small children 10 hours and wrecked their sleep schedule but I'm here."
I thought the leaning down and publicly and pointedly asking George if he was okay was done to make a point of some kind, as if to remind Canadian officials that there were two little kids who had made the trek too. Someone mentioned that none of the royals' wishes were taken into account in the tour planning so that's what the question to George may have been for.

    27. Hello Again:) I was thinking about my post as I head off to bed & wanted to pop back here to add one more clarification, so my observations might not be taken as meant to be critical, just a questioning observation. I've personally never ever thought Kate has "RBF" (thx Rebecca I wouldn't have remembered what to call it xo:) I've always thought, "What are people referencing?" So maybe that "Is" all I picked up on during the Live Feed. But I'm glad we could have a civil discussion about our opinions & observations. That I think is a True Tribute To Charlotte's Blog! 29. Becca, I'm curious as to why you write with every word capitalized. For those of us who speed read, it makes it very difficult. You comments are interesting, could you adjust the capitalization?

    31. I have been watching many of the clips, including the deplaning ones, and I did notice this time around, the stiffening of the body language around the PM and his wife. I do think that there was something there - a certain holding back and lack of openness.
Elizabeth makes some valid points and I could see myself speculating along the same lines. It did seem completely unnecessary to drag the children there for what - a playdate?
And just to remind everyone - we are speculating here, none of us knows what is going on.
As for the resting face comments - I do wish we would stop talking about that. No one can control what sort of expression their face settles into when they are not smiling.

There are beautiful gardens, lawns, ponds, fountains, a rose garden, huge trees, and stunning views of the Juan de Fuca Strait and Olympic Mountain range from there. There are many deer and bunnies to be seen right on the property. I hope they are having fun!

I love love love those boots. I have to admit, I thought she was going to wear her skinny jeans and wedges. I wish I could wear knee boots like hers. My calf is wide (thanks to my mom for genetics),and I am petite as well 5'2, I have trouble finding riding boots that zip up all the way. Any suggestions we're all friends here, I don't mind anyone's opinions lol.

  16. I really like this jacket and also quite like her hair this way! I do think a classic white shirt would have been nicer and more stylish underneath but that's just me. This is a tad too casual, but clearly it was a very casual day.

I do think they *both* need to work on their resting faces! Charlotte was kind enough not to use some less flattering photos :) They should both know by now they are on display 24/7.

It makes me wonder about the wisdom of bringing children on tour. While past royals probably left the children to the nannies, I'm sure W&K are hard at work as mum & dad when they see the children in the evening. Hard to put a full day in on tours (which are quite grueling) then be in parent mode, then right back to work again. Add in jet lag and it may leave them both feeling a little knackered and not up to putting 100% in. William's daft Charles like comment yesterday as well... just an observation.

    ReplyDelete

    1. William is not Charles and Kate is not Diana. Let them live their own lives. Do you know any couple who is always totally in sync? I don't.

Let's not behave like a tabloid. There are enough of them.

      Delete
    2. First of all, Will and Kate aren't full-time working royals so they haven't got the hang of being "on" for every minute they're on public display. They'll get there, they just haven't yet.
Even for the royals who do work full-time, there are moments when they're not smiling or laughing or looking completely fascinated at whatever's going on. It happens.
I'm fairly sure that the stress of leaving the children for the India/Bhutan tour, especially George since he seems to be far and away Kate's favorite, was unbelievably stressful on them and probably more than either realized it would be. I suspect that bringing the children along was a condition of this tour.
And it's their choice and they knew what the tour schedule was. So they, obviously, feel up to the task.
The other point is that Charlotte and George will, at some point, have to be in the public eye. Better to introduce them in manageable amounts than to suddenly thrust them before the cameras.

      Delete
    3. I think they both looked tired and bored, and the funny thing is someone who watched the live coverage came away with the same sentiment.

This is not a criticism but an observation.

I also agree with you about Wiliam's comment, the thing is you never know when he is joking and when he is serious. People tend to take every words they utter seriously, and I can't blame them for criticising him every step of the way. This was a crticism:)

      Delete
    4. Elizabeth, this isn't the first time you've made a reference to George being Kate's favorite and I honestly don't get it. And I believe it would be quite hurtful to Kate if she thought this was anyone's impression. Attending to a tired child and being proactive during a moment that is watch by the world makes her a wise mother; it does NOT mean she is neglecting the child she is HOLDING. Have you ever seen the photo of a very confused looking Charles as a boy as he is greeted by his mother as she gets off the train? I have! So may we please enjoy this breath of fresh air that W&K represent???

They both looked stunning today, and very appropriately attired for the weather. It must have been a very bumpy plane ride for them, but glad they carried on.

    2. Actually, I'm glad she wore the same boots again. She often gets criticised for expensive clothes (despite the fact that some of her things are GBP 2,300 and some GBP 75), so why not wear the same comfortable boots again instead of some new ones that would mean unnecessary expense? Plus, these are really nice IMO.

A shame about the weather but there will be more scenery - that type of weather is a risk in British Columbia - been there, got very wet! It was a great day for those they met which is really the point of a tour - not sight-seeing.

I like her outfit very much - it doesn't have quite the originality of some of our stylists but it's still a great look - well put together and making use of a classic British firm. Love the boots. I'm delighted to see the Canadian designer earrings. I love Kate's hair this way (she wore it that way on her arrival on the last Canadian tour which I also loved. She has very nice bone structure and the style shows it off while also keeping her hair neat and off her face. And it shows off the earrings.

  24. Hmmm, the "resting face" comment is an interesting one. The Queen often looks grumpy in repose. I think if we did go case by case we will find that everyone's resting face is a grumpy one, especially as we get older. I looked for Princess Mary of Denmark's resting face and she manages not to look grumpy, just pensive. But she is a person who seems to smile a lot. Without meaning to be catty (but probably am), Princess Letitia has a tightly pulled face so I don't think she does frown. Diana often looked bored when she was with Charles but people put that down to the state of the marriage. I don't think that Kate looks snooty at all but yes, sometimes she looks tired and looks as if her mind is on something else (like: I wonder if Charlotte's nappy rash is better, I wonder if Nanny Maria is happy or tearing her hair out, I wonder if Wills is going to improve his French accent sometime, I wonder if that latest text from Pippa has gone viral)

Can you imagine having to smile all the time!! It sounds exhausting. Kudos to Kate though, because if that's her "resting face" its still quite photogenic! Some things aren't meant to be over thought or analyzed. Maybe her thoughts are the one thing that is truly private! cc

I looked at the weather radar for North America this morning, and the only rain in the entire western half of the continent was just west of Vancouver Island. I hoped it would stay offshore, but obviously it traveled up over the rainforest. Too bad, but it is impossible to have one's eyes open without seeing great beauty in British Columbia.

  30. Ok so the PM and his wife Sophie seems to hold hands often. I personally would love to see kate and william do so as well, even occasionally. I thought this while they were in India and here while they are walking. Anyone know if this is is their personal choice or if it is discouraged by the Queen? Just curious

    1. The PM seems like a man who loves publicity at any cost. I was amused that when he tried to engage George he was rejected. You gotta love children. They are so honest.

I don't think you will ever see PDA like that from any senior couple in the BRF. It's a job not a love fest.

      Delete
    2. It's funny, I always think of them as being a couple that touches & holds hands a lot ? Maybe that comes from unofficial photos, like the ones of them walking here or there & getting snapped or the pap video of them going for a walk at Governor House on The Australian Tour. I still remember how they were walking holding hands & swinging them back & forth & then she jumped up & did a spontaneous side kick in the air & seamlessly resumed walking without them breaking their hand holding:) Soooo Adorable! I thought it was The Cutest Thing :) xo

      Delete
    3. I think it is a personal choice, for example the Belgium king and queen are also holding hands in public often.

      Delete
    4. I do remember a fairly recent photo showing them holding hands while walking to church with other members of the Royal family, but this was a private affair and they were not "on duty." I can't quote any source, but I tend to agree with Anon 2:09 that they probably refrain from PDAs in order to appear more professional.

      Delete
    5. Actually, W&K's PDA is unprecedented in the BRF. Consider how often William places his hand on Kate's back, or one of them places a hand on the other's knee, or they share a quick comment in confidence and lean into each other, or they share a knowing smile as they look into each other's eyes. Never mind other spontaneous moments we've had the pleasure of witnessing over the years. At the end of the day, they are representing the Queen and I think there is plenty of PDA considering the Firm's overall lack of it.

      Delete
  31. My my, why are some of you looking for the negative with this couple? Given the pressure they are under its a miracle that they don't just tell us all where to go and how to get there. Would you want someone judging every expression or glance from you 24-7?

    1. Alexandra, Kate wears Bobbi Brown Long Wear Even Finish Foundation. I've got the Bobbi Brown tinted moisturizer and it's wonderful, very longlasting and with great coverage.
She doesn't wear sheer makeup, she does use a foundation with a fairly substantial coverage but she does blend it well. It looks like she's been tanning (spray tanning, of course!) and I think that's contributed to how great she looks. A discreet bronze glow (a good one, not the Trumpesque orange marmalade tinge) does wonders to make one look younger and all-around healthy!

I think Kate and William are doing well and having tremendous appeal to Canadians. I think I never really grasped their charisma until I saw them next to Sophie and Justin Trudeau. The Trudeaus are very glamourous in their own right but the Cambridges eclipse them without appearing to try. It's quite astounding...

I like Kate's casual outfit today. I love, love the jacket. The only thing I don't like are the earrings. They're very distracting. 41. It's rather intriguing - but it has not made the news (except for the CBC News live tv show) that actually the Big Chief of the First Nations has snubbed the royals and did not show up to meet them today (it's likely more of a snub to Trudeau - than to the Royals themselves). One of the items that almost never gets discussed in Canadian politics (and likely the reason why Justin Trudeau rushed to mend the relations with the aboriginals here as soon as he got elected) is that his father, Pierre Elliot, actually was one of the worse PMs the country ever had in terms of recognizing the first nations' rights. His (PE's) policies - if revealed again today - would undoubtedly stun our people in Canada. That's probably why the Big Chief did not respond to the invitation to meet with the royals (maybe he would have agreed, had someone else - not the Trudeau government - sent the invitation). There were other chiefs at hand to sub for him I guess - but make no mistake, William and Kate are very much aware (even if you don't read about it). This was not so much the big success they were counting on (and not because of the weather).

Like some others have commented here, Kate (and I would add sometimes William) look beyond tired - more like concerned perhaps. This tour is reported as a huge PR success - but they know that the reality is way more complex (and less rosy) than what is being described in the press.

  45. Hi Charlotte, thank you for letting us know the reception timings. I've been sat refreshing the blogg and twitter waiting for photos :-) I liked Wills look today but not so sure about Kates Jacket, love what she was wearing underneath it though. I wondered if she's borrowed Wills cashmere jumper :-). I'm really glad that the harsh weather didn't stop the entire days schedule especially as this is high on their priority list.

It's interesting hearing everyone's comments about Kate's boots. They are obviously very comfortable as she wore them on the hill climb in Bhutan, and knowing how soggy and wet the area they are in gets it makes sense wearing something very sturdy and comfortable. I wondered if they might need wellingtons.

Canadian Friend your comment about the Cambridge's eclipsing the Trudeau's is so true, I couldn't put my finger on what didn't quite fit when I was watching them at the welcome reception waiting on the corner for the cars to arrive. You're right, they looked a little over shadowed and inexperienced when along side Will and Kate.

Looking forward to the reception. I wonder if the ladies guessing will be right or will we be surprised again.

I love Kate in casual clothing. It seems like she's more sure of herself, more confident and at ease at events like these today.
I also am delighted to see that she's had a little tanning done for the tour. She looks amazing with a little bronze glow, it definitely flatters her.
I love the boots. I wish we could find a Replikate for those!
Great event today and I'm no expert but it seems like today is the tone the Cambridges wanted on this tour - fun, relaxed, personal and really engaging with the people vs. stiff, formal ceremonies.
As for the boots, with proper care and storage, it's possible they can last 10 and more years, even the rubber sole.

  48. This is such a relaxed look for both the duke and the duchess. I really liked Kate's makeup which is very subtle and refreshing. She does not look tired at all. 56. I was trying to reply to Becca from USA's comment for some reason when I click on "reply" it doesn't work. Anyway, I do agree that perhaps Kate was feeling a little "off" in Bella Bella yesterday. I noticed a moment during the live feed of the ceremony when she and Will were seated waiting for things to begin, when she appeared a little tense, she kind of did that thing that I do when I'm nervous, when she took a breath and exhaled as if she was trying to relax. I noticed that before I read all the comments from my fellow readers. I agree the travel across 8 time zones, with small children, followed immediately by a flurry of events and who knows, the children are likely feeling it also and perhaps they have been not sleeping well. It must be exhausting to begin with, and then to have to try to be upbeat and "on" all the time, would, I imagine, be difficult. I know it would be for me.

  57. love love love love the coat, the sweater with the check shirt underneath - the whole look! I love the tours when we see so many beautiful looks and just see her and Prince William interact! I love having something happy to read since all we have is dismal election news here. Heather Detroit MI

  58. I loved the way Kate looked during the daytime activities. She always seems more relaxed and happy when dressed down in casual clothes. William too, for that matter. But oh that red dress is just awful. She is way too thin to be showing that much skin. Makes her look gaunt and unhealthy. It's also inappropriate for a fall evening in Canada, especially without some kind of wrap. The place and season requires more coverage. Just a big miss all around. Add that to the awful girlish frilly number from Monday and I'd really like to see her give that stylist a boot. After the wonderful start in that elegant blue dress, now I'm almost afraid to see what the rest of the week will bring.

    1. Think you are in the minority here. She did not have to leave the home where she is staying, so did not need to be covered up. Canada has also not experienced typical fall weather yet. She is not gaunt, but very well toned and athletic. She looked absolutely stunning and has done extremely well on this tour.

  59. The Red Preen was absolutely magnificent. She looked dazzling, smashing, gorgeous and beautiful. Every fashion magazine that I saw, Vogue etc, were unanimous in their opinion that she knocked it out of the park. In fact, the dress sold out in a few hours.
