Kate in McQueen for Day of Engagements in Vancouver

Day two of Royal Tour Canada 2016 saw the Cambridges travel to Vancouver.

Following a hugely successful first day, William and Kate were all smiles as they arrived at Victoria Harbour to travel by float plane for their first visit to Vancouver. The bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia, is among Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities.

Kensington Palace shared this photo of the couple departing.

The Palace shared this photo taken on the plane with the caption: "You're looking amazing Vancouver!"

The couple landed at the harbour in the heart of the city to a loud welcome from several hundred royal fans.

The royals did a walkabout at Jack Poole Plaza, located by the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre where fans had been waiting since 5 am to meet the royals.

The dismal weather did not deter locals. The Vancouver Sun reported: "Many waved Canadian flags, and many more brandished iPhones and selfie sticks eager to get a glimpse of the glamorous young couple."

Kensington Palace said one of the key objectives of the public welcome was to allow the Duke and Duchess "to get an immediate sense of Vancouver's energy and dynamism". The couple are also eager to meet as many people as they can in British Columbia and Yukon during their visit.

A very dapper Prince William greeted the crowd.

The royals moved from Jack Poole Plaza to the Downtown Eastside where they visited Sheway - a charity helping vulnerable mothers overcoming addiction.

The focus of the program is to help the women have healthy pregnancies and positive early parenting experiences.  Where Sheway is located "has been identified as the poorest neighbourhood in Vancouver, if not in Canada. It is known for its sex and drug trade, violence and crime, alcohol and drug use, substandard housing and high rate of HIV-related illness". The Palace added: "The link between addiction and family breakdown is something that has been a major priority of the Duchess' charitable work."

More on the history of the organisation from their website:

'Sheway was established in 1993 in response to a growing understanding of the needs of pregnant and parenting women living in the DTES. A report entitled Targeting High Risk Families (Lock et al., 1993) revealed that approximately 40% of infants born over a two year period to mothers living in this area of Vancouver were exposed to alcohol or other drugs in utero. The rate of low birth weight was 33% in the exposed infants, all of whom were apprehended by child protection authorities. In this same period, hospital health care providers were identifying an increasing number of socially high-risk pregnant, substance-using women arriving at emergency departments ready to deliver and with no history of prenatal care. The health outcome, for these mothers and infants was poor.
In response to these concerns, a group of health and social service providers (including representatives of BC Children’s Hospital, the Vancouver Health Department, and the YWCA’s Crabtree Corner program) prepared a proposal for the development of a community-based integrated service that would meet the complex health and social needs of this population of women and children. In July 1992, funding for the project was approved and the service began operation in March 1993.'

William and Kate met with mothers who discussed their experiences of overcoming addiction.

Two teddy bears for George and Charlotte. Kate said "Thank you so much, Charlotte will love this, she loves her teddies".

More from The Mirror:

'Of course, the one thing that Kate and William always get asked about are their children. Three-year-old George and Charlotte, 16 months, have remained at Government House with their nanny today, while their mum and dad visit Vancouver. When asked about her little ones, Kate said: “I just can’t believe how quickly they’re growing, it’s amazing how time goes”

William and Kate met a baby as she was being weighed and Kate remarked "I can't believe how good she is. Whenever we used to put George or Charlotte on the scales they would never sit still".

Prince William was moved when he heard how Princess Diana opened a maternity centre in Glasgow, which Sheway has modelled itself on. More from The Mirror;

'Physician Ron Abrahams told William how Princess Diana had opened the Women’s Reproductive Maternity Service in Glasgow in 1990, which Sheway has modelled itself on. "Oh, I didn’t know, that’s good to hear," said William. "It’s probably in my briefing notes somewhere, I’ve got this huge file of notes I haven’t managed to get through yet but I’ll get there," he joked.
Mr Abrahams added: "It’s wonderful to have you here after all the work your mother did in this field. It’s like full circle for us with your family." William smiled and looked visibly moved as he listened to Mr Abrahams talk about Diana. “He was really quite chuffed.”
The royals were shown round the centre by Patti Zettel, Sheway’s manager and the clinical co-ordinator, Dana Clifford. “Thanks so much for having us here, sorry about all the chaos we’ve brought with us,” laughed William.'

William and Kate were joined by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie for the next portion of the day.

They visited the Immigration Services Society of British Columbia where they met staff and volunteers who support over 25,000 recent migrants to Canada each year, including some of the 30,000 who have arrived in Canada over the last year from UNHCR camps that are supporting those who have fled the war in Syria.

The organisation's settlement services director Chris Friesen talked about the society's programme for welcoming young refugees and helping them adjust to life in Canada.

These little ones and their families have benefited from the services offered by the ISSBC.

The Duchess received a bouquet from a little girl in the playground.

The Duke and Duchess then attended an event celebrating young leaders in Canadian arts, music, sport, charity, business, and film at Telus Gardens.

Prince William and PM Trudeau chatting with young Canadians who are making a difference in their local communities.

The final engagement of the day saw the Duke and Duchess learn more about the first responders who work together to keep Vancouverites safe as they enjoy life in their city.

They visited the Kitsilano Coastguard Station in Vanier park and learned about the round the clock operation to support people who get into trouble in the waters that surrounds this coastal city.

Meeting with first responders and staff.

Kate and Sophie enjoy a chat before engagements wrap up for the day.

Kate's dress is by Alexander McQueen. It appears to be a bespoke version of the Resort 2017 Collection style shown below. I imagine Kate and Sarah Burton may have collaborated on this with the Duchess undoubtedly choosing the red and white as a nod to her host country. It features long sleeves and a fitted top whilst the skirt is tiered. What do you think of this look? I'm a fan; I think it looks beautiful on the Duchess. Early reviews are mixed, and I expect it may prove one of the more polarizing tour selections.

A closer look at the pattern.

The Duchess carried a new red clutch bag - the Miu Miu Bow-Embellished Suede Shoulder Bag (with many thanks to Food Fash Fit). The £640 bag is described: "Crafted in Italy from plush crimson suede. This ladylike style has a gilded silver chain strap and opens to three spacious compartments - including a secure zipped section. Use the internal mirror to refresh your lip color on the go."

Net-A-Porter

It's available in red and black at Net-A-Porter.

Net-A-Porter

The Duchess wore a gorgeous new pair of red suede heels.

Russell & Bromley confirmed Kate wore their £165 Pinpoint Pointed Toe Court Shoes. The red suede shoes are described as "Every woman's wardrobe has a space for a pointed toe court and Pinpoint is a chic solution. Beautifully crafted in soft red suede they are elegant yet understated."

Russell & Bromley

And accessorised with her Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.

Cartier

And new earrings.

Jewellery expert Anna believes they *might* be on loan from the Queen. In her blog post Anna wrote "I believe they are on loan from HM The Queen. The Countess of Wessex worn these only one time to a royal wedding in 2012 (while wearing other jewels on loan from The Queen). HM wore these back in 1977 during her silver jubilee."

We'll see you tomorrow for events in Bella Bella!

  1. You're doing a fantastic job! Even though I live near Vancouver, I turn to your blog for the best coverage. I would have loved to go down this morning, but I'm sick! One of my co-workers is there, though, and I hope she gets a great view and some photos to share tomorrow!

Thank you so much! I have been stalking your page waiting for pictures. I love the dress but I'm not too sure about the shoulders. I would love to see William in something other than his standard navy suit with striped tie. I can't wait to see the rest of the day.

    4. You’re not alone Mary! I was up early this morning (on the east coast of Canada) waiting for some photos. These certainly didn’t disappoint. I like everything about the dress except the collar - maybe a slight V-neck or something? Love the red shoes and clutch and William looks great in his charcoal outfit! Heartfelt thanks, Charlotte, once again.

I'm not loving this dress at all. After seeing what Kate wore yesterday, I was thrilled to see how she could top it today. I don't know if its the pattern or the ruffles, the only thing that I do love are the shoes. Mary, what part of North Carolina do you reside in?

  5. Catherine looks stunning in this fun McQueen dress with a nod to Canadian colours. Puzzling why you'd think she'd wear jeans and boots on her first official visit to an international city like Vancouver. Sure, they're taking a float plane, but this is the city and like when they make visits in London, they're dressed to represent the monarchy. I'm sure they'll wear jeans in more remote areas.

  7. I agree Charlotte, beautiful dress and she looks stunning. Pattern may be a nod to the indigenous nations. British should be really proud of the way this couple represents them instead of always whining about what they don't do. There obvious family values are so important in today's world and they are excellent role models for the younger generation.

    2. More "Kate things". Red and white for Canada, the print a nod to native designs.

And, think about this, could it be that the actual design of the dress is a cultural reference somehow.
      I think so.

It is different and with the other two references above, it wouldn't surprise me if the design is culturally significant also. The high collar, the studs, the tiers, the ruffled edges.
Any local or native Canadaians know what I mean?

    3. Really 18:53,

with everything that is going on in the world, this family is like a beacon in a storm. A lot to compliment and treasure. Not really much to criticize, IMO.

    4. 20:13, Someone here today made a cowgirl reference

as to the style of the dress (another nod to Canada) and I think they have found another "Kate thing" for sure. Like the blue and white Heads Together school girl dress. Those who don't factor that in are missing the point, IMHO. The cowgirl style ties in somehow to native dress also I think. I just haven't found the specific detail connection. Yet.

  8. Don't hate, but don't love. Too much going on here! The print is wild, loud, and could be elegant, but the white collar, cuffs and placket down the front make it boxy and stiff looking - are those silver studs around the collar? A little too edgy in my opinion. Also the skirt has a tier - too much fabric, too short for a tier, I don't like tiers in general, actually. Kate is beautiful no matter what but this is a bit of a miss IMO. (Also the red shoes - erg. A bit literal and again, loud imo.)

    3. I agree with you this dress is just awful. If it had been a pencil skirt rather than a ra-ra then it might have just about made the grade, but this is 100% "no" from me. Only the shoes are nice and the hair needs tying up. The blue dress and hat from yesterday and the up do were stunning in comparison.

The Print Is A Nod As Are The Floaty Layers That Almost Look Like Feathers Or The Wings Of Birds. 14. I might be in the minority, but I don't love this dress. I think I'd like the skirt as a skirt, but the bodice is a bit odd to me. I think it's the buttons or studs around the high collar? Or maybe it's that the fabric looks summery, but the sleeves/neckline look very winterish?

Props on the shoes, though! I wish she'd pull out these red stunners more often--she only ever seems to wear them when she's wearing a red dress.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The close view seems like it's made of eyelet (or a form of broderie Anglaise), which is a VERY summery fabric, considering that it's fall in Vancouver. And you're right, even though the fabric speaks to a summer dress, the heavy tailoring, the high neck, long sleeves and buttoned-up bodice, speaks to a winter dress.

      Delete
  15. This is a major miss for me. It's just too busy with the neckline and pattern. And the dress, shoes and bag are all different shades of red. Instead of complementing each other, they just clash in my eyes.

  16. Great that you are so fast with a picture and identification of the dress. The dress is too girlish and short for a royal function to my opinion. I hope there will be no wardrobe malfunction with a wind blow again like on all other royal tours. The suede pumps seems to be Gianvito Rossi shoes and the clutch bag looks like a Mulberry baywater bag.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh! I may turn out to be in a complete minority here but I really don't like this dress at all. Yesterday's arrival outfit was one of my all-time favourite Kate looks - I thought she completely nailed it - but, by contrast, this is one of my least favourites. I love the fact that she's wearing something red and white, I appreciate that the print is quite ethnic in its feel, and I love the fact that the overall look is completely different to yesterday (different hairstyle, different silhouette, different colour - I'm sure the newspaper/magazine editors will love that), BUT for me it's just way too fussy. A busy print and a busy shape and all those white bits. I think she could have achieved a very similar feel in terms of colour and shape by re-wearing her Eponine two-piece. Sadly a big sartorial miss for me, but I hope the engagements go well and that any of our Canadian readers who are going to brave the rain get good views/piccies!

  32. The dress is fun, but I'm not a fan of the whole dress put together or the way it has been styled.

The skirt individually is fine. The bodice and sleeves are fine alone (although maybe not the extra scallop flap above the bust). Put together, they would still be somewhat ok if it were not for the neckline. It is the high white collar with those things on it that completely ruins the dress for me. If it were a v-neck or scoop neck or even a proper shirt collar, I think the dress would work a whole better.

Styling was a miss today, too. With such a high, severe neck, her hair should be either fully up or at least half up. Even an elegant pony tail would be better. Plus, with that much white in the dress, I would not have styled it with the red shoes and clutch. I'm guessing she went with the red accessories to try to tone down the summery nature of the dress, but it does not work for me. Odd choice for Fall in the Pacific Northwest.

Yikes. The more I look at it, the more I dislike this look. Yesterday was out of the park amazing, so today is a major letdown for me.

    1. I love this dress but do agree with you about her hair. A nice structured ponytail would have enhanced the whole look. Although the dress is flouncy and feminine, it is very structure, and the loose natural hair style kind of gets lost with the dress.

    2. Even the earrings look a bit odd. Are those Kate's usual pearl drops, worn with studs rather than hoops? Does she have new studs? That could be jewelry news! But I'm not crazy about the combination. Actually, the only thing I really like about this look is Kate's smile.

      Delete
  33. Not crazy about the dress, but love that it's something different. William's outfit is great!! Kate's outfit yesterday was gorgeous - kind of throwback, a little Jackie O... Maybe aristocrats dress their young sons differently, but Prince George, a total cutie, looks silly in those shorts with knee high socks and dress shoes - so strange..

    1. Yes I think that British tradition of dressing little boys in shorts and knee sox, has to move on to the 21st century. Put him in regular pants, please.

    2. I think George was very appropriately dressed.

What did you expect him to be wearing 19:25?

      Delete
    3. Prince William has the best outfit today, that's great! :)
I can't understand, why Prince George always wears shorts with knee high socks. It looks silly, not serious for him as future king - imO. Is this a special britain style?
Duchess Kate chooses today a outfit which is adequate to the colors of Canada but not to the proportions of her body: her arms and legs are to long for this dress. The open and wide sleeves of the model are much better. For me she looks like a young girl, not like a duchess. She tried something new, okay... I like the red shoes and bag very much, but the different colors of the red are in my eyes difficult, they disturb the message of the dress.
But Kate can wear nearly all. She will find her modern style. I'm curious about the next outfits the next days. Can she be more gorgeous than yesterday?
Thank you, Charlotte, for your informations so quickly!! Great!

      Delete
    4. I don't think it's that strange. I like the fact that they dress their little boy like a little boy, and not a mini-man. Prince George will have plenty of time to wear regular pants later on, but you're only little once! Although if it's cold, I would definitely put a 3-year-old in long pants.

      Delete
    5. Reminder that George is British wearing formal British style. So forget US preferences.

    6. The practice of dressing little boys in shorts, knee socks and black oxfords seems to be unique to the British monarchy and/or the highest levels of the old English aristocracy.
I think dressing him in such an old, outdated style is more "old man" than if they'd just dress him in updated little boy clothing.

  34. I was able to catch a glimpse of them this morning after they got off the plane and before they got into their car. It's too bad that it's a typical Vancouver day today - cloudy with some occasional drizzling rain. Overall, it was fun to see them!

    2. Whoever said that Kate's ensemble yesterday was French Blue is right on. I thought it was a shade of Royal Blue, and it was close, but French Blue it is.
Not surprising, given the French aspects of Canada.

Pantone, Smart 18-4140X, color swatch French Blue

Pantone, color swatch, 4175E3, Royal Blue

    3. I just looked at those color swatches, Anon, and her dress seems royal blue to me. The french blue appears lighter and brighter. Colors are amazingly subjective though :-)

    4. Both colors are very close. But they are definitely the color of her outfit yesterday. Thanks.

  36. Whoa, this outfit is different! I like the fabric (looks like an eyelet fabric with red embroidery?) but all the details and clashing reds are making my head spin! Maybe this will look great for the crowds that see Catherine from afar. I think this dress would look great without the second tier/flounce, and with a different collar (or maybe the top button of the collar unbuttoned?). Anyways, I can't say this is a complete miss and it is always interesting to see the Duchess' sartorial choices while on tour.

And thank you, Charlotte, for keeping us all posted on the latest news!

Love how enthusiastic William is in shaking people's hands and laughing with them. And how the people seem to love it. Reminds me of when the King and Queen first instituted visits during WW II but so much more natural. There is no competition between W & C on walkabouts that's for sure!

  43. Ok, yesterday she hit it out of the park; I don't think there was one negative comment. Today, we are divided. I'm on the side of loving this dress. Anon 19:05 has it right: beautiful, flirty, classic, with a nod to Canadian colors. Even a bit edgy, which I think is great. I have a tiny quibble with the color of the shoes vis a vis the dress. Yes, they are a gorgeous red, but perhaps not quite the right red for the dress. Still, as I said, a tiny quibble. And William looks great, too, in something a little different for him. I think so far it's a win-win!

    1. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS OUTFIT. I want this outfit, only the longer version though. So vibrant and beautiful, I agree.

Ms. Clark wore red and white today also. She was their primary host today wasn't she? Very photo op appropriate.

Funny, the Daily Mail said that William lent a helping hand to Kate as she was getting off the plane because she was wearing "teetering" heels. WHAT? Those are like flats compared to her usual fare. Must have been a guy who wrote that. lol A woman would know immediately those are not teetering.

William, to me, was extra attentive to Kate today, with them sharing a lot of giggles and private conversations. Me thinks he likes his lady to wear red, and beautiful flirty dresses.

Did anyone get to see them in person today? I hope, I hope, I hope. :)

  44. First impression before I start over analyzing is that I LOVE the dress! The pattern is so pretty and I love the colors. I like the high neckline...the dress I chose for Kate's dream look has a similar high neckline. Her hair looks as if perhaps it wasn't washed this morning....maybe they tried to sleep in as late as possible. I'm sure they were exhausted by the time they finally got to bed.

  45. Absolutely stunning! Fashion-forward, fresh and a fantastic nod to Canada. Not crazy about the two different reds between the shoes and the clutch, but this is a huge win! Finally she looks her age!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love the dress but not for this occasion and not a fan of that stiff, formal buttoned-up-to-the-chin neckline. Too stiff, starchy and formal for the time and place, at least as it's styled here.
I know I'll be attacked by the KWs for saying this but - and I know how Kate loves her McQueen - I WISH Sarah Burton would take her and the venerable Natasha Archer, Kate's "stylist," in hand and teach them how to STYLE the edgy McQueen pieces, from hair to shoes and jewelry. As it is, the Burton/McQueen pieces wear Kate, they seem to overwhelm her because the hair, shoes, jewelry is so dainty and dull.
The red and white Epinone suit would have gone well here. I hope we see some Erdem pieces along the way too or a recycle from the first Canadian tour.
BTW, Charlotte, kudos to you for getting these posts up since you're working in the middle of the night in the UK to do so!!
I wish she'd stick to sheath-style dresses. They flatter her figure like nobody's business.

  47. Thrilled to see her red suede pumps agin. On the tour looks post there were many hoping to see them. Is that a new Mulberry Baywater clutch? I don't remember her having one before. She must be able to call them up and order colors on demand. She definitely favors that style a lot!

This is such a complete turn around from yesterday's look. Maybe that's why people are judging it harshly. While it's not my favorite and has A LOT going on, it's very pretty and I like the colors & print. I like that she chose it and it's well suited to all the engagements today.

  52. That dress is fantastic, so far I am so impressed with her sartorial choices. So much planning must of been involved! A beautiful ensemble to be sure!
Vancouver is a huge city and very diverse. It is one of the best shopping cities in North America and the restaurant scene is amazing. When I lived in Seattle I would often take the train just for the day to shop or stay over at the Sylvia in Stanley Park. In the summer they used to have extraordinary firework displays on four Saturdays by artists from around the world. And there is a great public pool too. I tried to go to grad school there, but as an American it was not as possible as someone in the Commonwealth. I highly recommend Victoria/Vancouver as a vacation destination. I spent my honeymoon on Vancouver Island and it was magical!
Catherine and William are going to be so WOWED by B.C. and I am silly with excitement to be able to follow via DK. Thanks Charlotte!

  53. Just to add a comment - Vancouver and the coastal area where they're at is notoriously humid. I'd love to see Kate let her natural curls loose a time or two. She's really got incredible curls and great texture - when it's not flattened with product and styling tools.

  54. Also, even if you don't like the look. Look at that skirt. Look at the tailoring! Look how the pattern matches on every pleat! That is some A grade tailoring!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes the tailoring is superb Rebecca - think it has more emphasis on the pleats than the original catwalk design - and it's an amazing detail. I can understand the price tag with the amount of work gone into it.
As so many of Sara Burton's designs (wedding dress in particular) showed this same level of expertise in the architecture/structure and the ingeneous pleats and folds.

  55. It's a mullet dress: business on top, party on the bottom! I wish it would pick one or the other.

The pattern is very busy. However, the positive is it distracts from her hair, which is always lovely, but I prefer it up/back/ponytailed.

  56. Not my favorite look. I don't like the bodice of the dress. I agree with a previous poster that it's an odd choice for Vancouver in the fall.I do love the shoes though!

  57. I understand the wish to have our red and white Canadian colours, but this reminds me of a tablecloth. I also agree it's an odd choice, weight wise, for a trip at the end of September on our west coast. Oh well, many more days to wow us, and the look yesterday was spot on.

  58. It isn't my favorite look ever, but it is growing on me. I don't love the neckline, as many have stated. I will say that if you watch videos, particularly of them disembarking and doing the walkabout, it actually seems to look better in motion.

So many people do not like this dress but I LOVE IT! Yes, it is a departure from her usual style but it is young, flirty, and fresh! I think it is great, and I hope that she continues to showcase different styles. I also appreciate that she chose red and white for Canada!

  60. Not enraptured with the dress. One more tier to the skirt would proportion it better. Now if she would have worn a version of just the top with a black pair of pants I would have been wowed, much more practical for getting in and out of that float plane.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I guess I am in the minority, but I really like the dress. It is a youthful design and the red shoes a clutch are a great compliment. The shorter skirt with the scallop edges is very different from the norm therefore giving this a very edgy feeling. Anything but the "dowdy" comments she often gets!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like the skirt, it's nice she's trying a different shape. And the bootom of it lively. But I hate the top part. To high the collar.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love the fabric and tiered skirt, but can't quite put my finger on why this isn't a big win for me. It could be just a let down from the perfection we saw yesterday. I give Kate major kudos for the bright red heels. I would have liked a brighter lipstick for balance and to carry the color to her face. An updo or pony would have complimented the dress style and high neck better, in my opinion.

Kate set the bar so high on Day 1 that it may take gowns and jewels before I'm happy again. :)

  65. Fresh and pretty, I love it Linda

  66. One thought about the dress--maybe she is trying to channel a bit of a "cowgirl" style while also being formal. The high neck and front with what looks like snap (instead of button) detail channels a cowboy/cowgirl rodeo-type button down shirt (which sometimes have snaps instead). In fact the top of the dress reminds me a little of the cowgirl shirt Kate wore in Canada in 2011 to the bull riding demonstration at the Calgary Stampede.

Also, the ruffles of the skirt (not sure what they're formally called) seem to channel a rodeo-type style a bit. This is just a guess--that maybe she is trying to be formal and Western Canadian casual at the same time. In that sense, I kind of like the look. (Though overall I've never been a fan of rodeo style clothing, but Kate is dressing for an occasion here, not just what she feels like wearing.)

    1. Christen,

21:13 made reference to something like that. I mean with the red and white for Canada and the native print, the design of the dress has to signify something relevant to the area also. Kate is usually very thorough in her "Kate things".

      Delete
  67. I do love seeing Kate in prints even if this one is a tad busy. I still love it. I also love what William is wearing. I agree with an above comment that we seem to see William in the same thing a lot of the time, so this look was a very pleasant change. George and Charlotte are adorable.

  68. Don't love, don't hate this dress. I think the least favorite part of it for me is the skirt. The second is the price tag. I think it is simply outrageous. I know the bill goes to Canada but it is way toooo much.

    1. I'm with you on the price tag Anett. I've seen estimates of £4000 online and I think that's way over the top for some of the places she's visiting today. (I'm in the camp of disliking the dress, so, for me it's way over the top for this dress anyway! And I can't see it being re-worn that often either.) It's so unlike Kate as well - usually she's so thoughtful when it comes to visiting poorer areas and tends to wear high street pieces. I wish she had today - a really nice L.K. Bennett dress or something from Goat (or a repeat of the Eponine suit that's been mentioned a few times) would have been a better price point I would have thought.

      Delete
    2. The bill for her clothing will not be born by Canada. Travel, accommodation, entertainment, security and similar other expenses is what is paid for by the Canadians.

      Delete
    3. Anett,

Does their clothing bill go to Canada? I thought that since that are their representing the Crown, albeit by Canadian invitation, that the Crown would buy the clothes and want Kate and family very nicely dressed as representatives of the Crown should be.

      Delete
    4. Anett,
I don't think the clothing bill of the duchess is paid by Canada or her taxpayers. I'd expect that the Cambridge's expenses (except for security and air transport) are paid out of the Duchy of Cornwall, Charles's holding. I seem to recall reading that Charles foots the bill for the hairdresser who travels with Kate and I know that in past tours, the palace has released that her clothing bill is paid for by Charles.

  69. I don't hate the dress but I don't like it. It would be improved by a high pony or pulling her hair back, it looks haphazard and kind of flyaway. I don't love the high collar, I think the busy pattern would do better to have a lower neckline to lessen some of the business. And pearl earrings with such a you g looking dress seems odd. One trendy and fashionable and the other traditional. Some pretty red eareings or jewels or stones would have been my choice. I do love the shoes, so nice to see a brighter color! And it seems like a nice trip so far. :)

Yesterday's look for me was, as many have said, one of the best ever. Very elegant and supremely regal. The children as ever adorable and so well behaved. I like seeing the good dynamics in the family. On another note I think I liked Sophie Trudeau's outfit but would like to see better photos.

  87. Goodness, a stunning adult emerged from the jet plane yesterday, but a child traveled by float plane today! I see the point of the red and white, of course, but this outfit does not go with the surroundings. Kate looks flighty, William looks somber. Someone must have known what they would wear, because the bears are dressed to match! I wondered why Kate did not wear her other red pumps, but perhaps these have lower heels. Anyway, in this dress with her hair down, Kate shocked me by looking quite juvenile.

I have to say I love this look - it's grown on me since first seeing it and it's very youthful and fun compared to the sophisticated formal look from yesterday (which I thought was simply stunning). It's interesting comparing the two and seeing Kate diverse range of looks from formal chic to a more youthful, cutting edge style. Surely something for everyone here, she's trying some bold and different looks at any rate.

First of all, a wonderful day of engagements, wonderful crowds and William and Kate seem happy and inspired by them - I've been hoping to see Kate get involved in birth related charities like Tommy's and the former Birthright - both of which were Diana charities and so right for a young woman, and this seems like it could be the beginning of that area of work for Kate. And nice they visited the recent refugees - especially after the tragedy in Seattle is bound to bring more negative publicity to immigrants - justified or not.

As for the dress, it is appropriate, a good use of Canada's colours and has many interesting elements but I can't love it. My first feeling was it is too short - full skirts tend to look very girlish when short unlike straight ones - but that tiered skirt would be rather heavy longer. Trying to sort out why it's not a complete win for me, I tend to agree with Janna - the closed top of the dress combined with the flirty tiered skirt and the pattern - all fine elements in and of themselves - don't quite work together. (not sure if the pattern is a nod to the native tribes or not - since Macqueen is using it for general use - not just bespoke.)

Somehow, as a whole, it seems like too many notes to me -all good notes but too many. I use that expression because it was apparently used once in comments about a Mozart opera - which happened to be Don Giovanni. Few people see it has having too many notes today so I appreciate there are good reasons why many people like this - it just doesn't quite work for me and we all should be entitled to our position - as Shaw said when someone booed one of his plays when everyone else was applauding - "I agree with you, sir, but what can we two do against so many." Even if I love something and others don't, I'm not bothered. To me, it makes an interesting world of differing ways of seeing things.

I'm always happy not see neutral shoes but on my monitor - the red of the shoes looks off with the dress - and I would have chosen black for that wonderful dress yesterday - quibble, quibble. But I would have to see the reds in natural light to make a proper judgment and they are great shoes. The purse is divine - a great addition to Kate's collection of clutches.

Sophie Trudeau looked very well in her dress - I like that length.

Love the focus at SHEWAY (what a great name - empowering!). Over time, each of the visits Catherine and William make to these places will de-stigmatises addiction and lifts community shame around seeking help. Well done to all the health professionals, support workers, volunteers and the Royal Family for working together in this area.

  96. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of this dress because it sort of looks like a Swedish embroidered table cloth. In fact, it might be my least favorite dress. However, her hair is great and she looks happy so I'll focus on that.

  97. Thanks for the wonderful updates Charlotte! I've been refreshing your blog page since early this morning - eager for some updates. I think the dress is different but I like it, it grows on you the more you look at it. I for one am in love with her red pumps - any ID on them yet? I just love watching how W & K interact with the public. You can tell they are very genuine and warm. Can't wait for more of the tour!

  98. While I thought Kate looked beautiful in blue on arrival, in my opinion she also looked more like a 45 year old than a 35 year old. I've realized that's something that just seems to be unique to women in the British Royal Family, they've always dressed older than their years. Ironically the older they get, the more stylish they often become!

That said, I thought this was a much more youthful and fresher look that was perfect on Kate. One quibble, it is crying out for a better hairstyle. She wears these fantastic, designer pieces and the hair just doesn't match, not polished at all. Even the half back style she favors would have worked, I'm thinking how sleek it was when she first wore that pink v-neck McQueen.

  99. I'm not sure I've made up my mind on today's look. The shoes and clutch are vibrant and fun but the dress isn't making a big impact on me. Unfortunately, I don't tend to like long sleeves or very high necklines which I think is shading my opinion.

I do like that she has been experimenting with patterns lately which I think makes her look very youthful and down-to-earth. Some of her choices in the past have made her look much older and stiff in my opinion.

Prince William has also been looking more youthful and relaxed, I love a man in a suit as much as the next girl but sometimes they come off very boring and plain. He's also been experimenting with different suits, ties and separates and it is making a difference.

  100. LOVE Kate's dress and I must say William looks quite handsome!!! It looks like they are having a lovely day in Vancouver. It is such a beautiful city. I love that they are so engaged with the people and are eager to meet as many people as possible. The tour has started off with a bang!

Kate's attire yesterday and today get rave reviews from me! BEAUTIFUL! :)

  101. Can anyone tell what the front of the earring posts might be made of? I have bad vision and I can't make it out.

  102. I love it on the Duchess. Classy, young, modern yet conservative. She looks her age and that's great. One of the reasons she always looks good is because her dresses are tailored so perfectly to her. If only we could all afford to do that we would all look like a duchess!

  103. After the beautiful and spot on arrival outfit this red and white dress is awful - too much going on. Would prefer hair anyway but loose with this dress. Love the red shoes and clutch.

  104. I love it! Modern and edgy yet classy and conservative. She always looks fabulous. She carries herself with such grace & kindness and --has perfectly tailored clothes! If only we could all afford that we would all look like royalty :)

  105. Oooh, not a fan. I love the fact that she stepped out of her normal, but the dress itself was not a hit for me. I would be okay if it was not a recycled piece. But I love the earrings and the shoes(even though whoever commented earlier is correct-they are not the right shade of red).

But yesterday was a perfect look. Knocked it outside of the park for me.

  106. Dislike the two-tiered skirt, and it's too short. Great bag. It's not her worst look but looks like something Pippa would wear - and that's not a good thing. Very busy and garbled with the white accents, color studs, tiered ruffles. What is this dress trying to be? It wears her, all you see is the pattern, not Kate.

  107. The contrast between yesterday and today makes me appreciate both in a new way. Yesterday, not only was that blue dress a hit, also her demeanor, stamina handling the children, princess confidence, a polite a back up to William, she also carried beauty to the best. Traditionalists and royalists may have had nothing to complain about. She was a traditional contemporary version of the house of her in laws (the queen’s coaching? maybe)

Today is a touch of Canada. She looks liberated, original, comfortable, part fun and part business. She looks happy in the dress and carries it well. To like the dress, or not, is another matter. Personally, I like it; she looks approachable and blending with the host country's crowd respectfully. A little short? modern dresses for that age group are that length too.

Charlotte looked like a nice version of the tourist; curiously wondering and wanting to absorb it all. I can imagine the pressure on George, he seemed to use to have it his way and be himself (no more a baby or a toddler/even his shoes is styled serious business in a form of William’s)

  108. Really dislike the dress. That tiered skirt-- looks like something a little girl would wear. The studs on the collar are dreadful and the pop of the red shoes made me cringe. And her hair was a bit of a mess. Yesterday she looked so fabulous! I guess not every day can be a winner, IMO. William looked terrific! He seems relaxed and confident. Nice to see. Kate, too, seems very confident in her role, lovely to watch her progression from five years ago.

  109. Could the shoes be her red suede Gianvitio Rossi ones she wore to 2016 Order of the Garter?

  110. I don't care for the dress. Agree with the commenter above: it's too girlish and short. Compared to her elegance yesterday, it came as a shock. Maybe if the hem were longer it might be ok, though I still think it's just too juvenile a look for a young matron like Kate. Sophie, in contrast, looked much more elegant and appropriate. Normally Kate looks great in everything, but this is a clear miss in my opinion. Hope it gets better.

Oh dear, not a fan of this dress. I don't like the layering of the skirt at all, and the buttoned up top seems uncomfortable. The styling is just off in my opinion. The hair is also a let-down.
Like the shoes and the bag, but not with this dress.
    Lovely smiles, though !!!!

    1. Theresa,

I think Kate was emulating another Canadian favorite, the cowgirl/rodeo dress.

Kate's dress is the spittin' image of a cowgirl/rodeo dress.

How did William do on his French in his speech? :)

  112. I'm in the love it camp, it's fun and a bit edgy. Will looks great too, I wonder if Kate has encouraged him to be a bit more daring or if he's just felling more confidant about the torus as a couple and happier to try different looks. A suit is very comfortable and safe for him, he's worn one his entire life pretty much.
The comments about Prince Geoege being in shorts; that's what a lot of little boys wear in their social circle, and I'd expect what his school uniform will be. Was my sons except from October to March when long trousers were allowed. Girls were expected to wear pinafore dresses.

  113. Love the dress:):). Gorgeous not at all a "girlish" look. Length is perfect, could even be shorter. Ali

  114. Did anyone notice the buttons, they look like kiddy buttons. Kind of odd for a McQueen piece.

  115. The Duchess looks fabulous. So fresh and flirty.

  116. Oh my ya'll, you have to hear this,

I looked up classic cowgirl dresses. Christen from New York was absolutely right. Kate's dress is a classic cowgirl dress in homage to Western Canada. Menswear top, high neckline, (white) border and cuffs, rivets (metal snaps) instead of buttons, tiered skirt with ruffles. Iconic cowgirl style, expertly tailored. The Cadillac of Cowgirl dresses I might add. NOW the dress makes sense, although I loved the dress anyway.

Kate once again chose purpose and homage.
How thoughtful and caring. How clever. She did it again. :)

She's probably been wondering when we would catch up with her in all of this. :)

    And thanks Christen.

  117. The ugliest dress that I have ever seen her wear. Who would believe that the outfit from yesterday would be followed by this.

  118. The Daily Mail is reporting that this dress cost $5000. If so, I am speechless. After yesterday's home run, this is so disappointing. I think Kate is getting some bad advice from Natasha. The last tour, in my opinion, was a complete disaster.
