A Fun-Filled Cambridge Family Day Out at the Polo!

A delightful surprise appearance from the Cambridges today!

Following Trooping The Colour yesterday, Kate, George and Charlotte cheered on Prince William as he participated in the Maserati Royal Charity Polo Trophy at the Beaufort Polo Club in Tetbury this afternoon.

Today marks Princess Charlotte's first appearance at the polo.

As expected, she made her debut in style.

Princess Anne's granddaughter Savannah Phillips stole the show at Trooping yesterday, she was on hand with her sister Isla for a fun afternoon with her cousins. In a number of the photos, Kate's chatting with their mother Autumn Phillips. Laura and James Meade were also there.

It's a treat to see the children playing together. This snap depicts a very sweet moment between Charlotte and Savannah.

The Beaufort Polo Club was formed during the winter of 1928-1929 and has become known as one of the friendliest clubs in England. It is home to the famous Tomlinson polo dynasty and plays host to the first Audi England International match of the summer. The Princes have played polo there for years.

The Gloucestershire Festival of Polo has long been a staple on the royal summer calendar. In fact, we last saw Kate at a polo match with George during the event in 2015. Since the early days of William and Kate's relationship, polo has always been a highlight, promising a fun selection of candid photographs of the royals. We've missed seeing the Duchess there in recent years, so it was terrific to see her return accompanied by two very cute royals :)

Three years later, George remains just as interested in his mallet :)

More on the Festival of Polo: "A mainstay of the British Polo and South West’s social calendar, thousands of visitors flock to the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo each June. The two-day spectacle, held at the Beaufort Polo Club, includes impressive top class polo, a tented shopping village plus arena attractions and a traditional funfair. Whether you’re a fan of the sport or simply enjoy a great social day out, the Gloucestershire Festival  of Polo is not to be missed."

The charity match raised funds and awareness for two charities, the Royal Marsden, which William supports as president, and his patronage Centrepoint.

The match, which saw the Maserati team take on the Dhamani 1969 side, is part of the Gloucestershire Festival of Polo, hosted by Beaufort Polo Club from 9th-10th June. The Palace added "This match is part of a series of charitable polo matches that the Duke and Prince Harry will play in this summer. Their Royal Highnesses have taken part in polo fixtures in support of their charities since 2007, and have continued each year since, raising over £11 million for charitable causes to date."

Judging by the photos, it looks like Kate joined in a chasing game.

George makes a run for it.

A very sweet shot.

It appeared to be an incredibly fun afternoon!

A wave goodbye from the Duchess.

Kate was stylish in the summery blue Striped Off-The-Shoulder dress by Zara (with thanks to Laura for the swift ID).

The $70 piece is described as "Dress with a plunging neckline and open shoulders. Vertical gathering in the front and back. Belt at the waist in the same material. A-line silhouette. Front button-up fastening."

It is thought Kate's shoes are the £125 Russell & Bromley Coco-Nut ankle strap espadrille wedges (with thanks to Sara and Ashley). Crafted from soft sand suede with an adjustable tan leather ankle strap."The woven fabric heel cup and rope wedge sole evoke visions of long summers in the Pyrenees."

Kate accessorised with her Victoria Beckham Quincy Leather Tote Bag.

A special word of thanks to James Whatling for his outstanding photos this weekend.

We conclude today's post by wishing Prince Philip a very happy 97th birthday!

YAY! I love Kate at the polo! I totally understand why they don't do it every year since they have alot of places to take the kids for a day out that doesn't involve a photographer wall and large horses with 3 kids. But very happy to see her since I love these occations and what a wonderful day for George to have a day out with mummy and daddy. Charlotte and Louis gets that when George is in school so how wonderful that he gets a day alone as well :)

Love what little we can see of her look :)

    2. I think Kate's hair looks longer because it is much straighter. When hair curls up, it takes off several inches in length.

  6. Love that the Prince, Princess, and Savannah are barefoot. Kids being kids. That's great. Love the dress the Duchess is wearing. Would love to see her smile.

    1. There are several photos of her smiling. Let us not perpetuate the notion that women should be smiling every moment of the day.

Lonette, I agree with you. It seems she has not been the same since having Prince Louis. I have been wondering if she has had the baby blues at all, because in the last decade, it has been her nature to smile, naturally, often. In the last 3 events she just hasn't looked herself. By the way, I didn't take your comment as "perpetuating a notion that women should be smiling every moment of the day" I took it more as she just doesn't seem the same, and I have noticed it too. Hope if that is true, it passes very soon for her. The blues stink!

      Delete
    3. Do you think she suffers post partum depression or baby blues? Thinking of it, yes she seemed more severe during Harry and Meghans wedding and also during Trooping the colour. Whereas at this outing she seems to be "another person"...relaxed and in a good mood.

However I think, she must be quite tired with 3 children. We donˋt know if baby Louis is a good sleeper or a demanding baby. 3 Kids is a lot to do for mummy Kate :-)

    4. I had 3 but the last one after the other two were much older. Everyone I know who went from 2 to 3 fairly quickly discuss what a shock it was. However having a Nanny help is huge as you do not feel quite so stretched and many more hands to run them around to different places. But still, it takes a chunk of time just saying a proper good night to everyone and spending a few minutes reading
etc.Plus you have the stuff with the other kids adjusting to another child in the house. She looks good and actually happy just a bit tired but clearly at the polo event she was well rested, confident the baby was happy and settled and able to chat with other grownup friends while still being with her children.

    5. Good lord, it's walking a land mine with some of these comments! Smile more! Smile less! Women need not ever smile! If you look at video of Catherine, you know she is a person who has a lovely smile that she uses often. This lady never puts a foot wrong! And she was still on mat leave, so she is "off the clock" , if you will. Let's foster positivity, as the opposite appears far too often on the internet.

  8. What fun! It’s lovely to see Catherine, George, and Charlotte looking so carefree and casual! And I think it’s a subtle way of getting the children more used to the gaggle of photographers - the pressure is lessened when you have 2nd cousins to play with. 🙂

As always, thank you so much for your wonderful post, Charlotte!

  9. Love Kate's look - she looks so pretty with her hair natural in an easy sundress and sandals.

The children are adorable - George seems to come out of his shell a bit more when around his cousins and Savannah and Charlotte are such cheeky little monkeys. I'm missing Isla though - maybe just not in these snaps.

I hope Mia will be able to join them at some point for even more lively fun. Zara's new baby must be due any day now.

Oh, that is nowhere near her natural hair! But I agree that her look and feel was so free and summery! Wonderful!

      Delete
    2. Very true! Her natural hair is quite curly. But I like the switch up to this straighter style, which looks different from her usual full blowout.

      Delete
    3. Hee hee Rebecca, I agree she may be getting it straightened a few times a year to cut down on blowing out. Possible her hair has lost some of its curl after 3 pregnancies also. But it looked very pretty at the polo match.

      Delete
    4. I love seeing Kate in these more relaxed, summery styles! And with a minor wardrobe malfunction to boot - proves she's just like us after all! ;-) Relived for her it was only one button, though, with cameras clicking.

So nice to see these two families out in the sun enjoying each other's company. Looks like the kids are quite close. Charlotte's somersault was too cute! Loved all these photos.

      Delete
    5. I was wondering about Zara too. She looked about ready to pop at the wedding.

      Delete
    6. Yeah I was a bit concerned over that wardrobe malfunction--blessedly barely noticeable. *whew* lol

Just as a side note straightening the hair is done by a straightening tool that needs to be used frequently like blow-drying, versus relaxing which is done only a few times a year and is by using chemicals, if you see what I mean. It's possible she used a straightener and not curled the ends at all, for a more "casual" look.

      Delete
    7. Denise, you are correct I was referring to the chemical process.

      Delete
    8. And I was just thinking her hair looked relaxed and low-maintenance compared to those beauty queen curls she usually has that look like they took hours of time to create. I had no idea what a conversation I was opening. For a moment, I thought Rebecca was referring to extensions that some have mentioned here.

Kate's hair curls naturally apparently and frizzes in heat - but except for her early uni days, she has worn it straight. Her preference I suppose. I like it both ways but except for evening, I like a look that isn't too heavily styled.

  10. Glad to see Kate and the children there. Everyone looks relaxed and happy.

That looks like such a fun day: great weather, hanging out with family—those are the lazy Sundays that I enjoy in my own life. I love Kate’ off-duty looks and the kids are adorable. I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: Charlotte is a little star! The sunnies, the tumbling, that smile! I don’t think she will have any trouble carving out a role for herself in the future! :-)

  22. Such a fun surprise! Everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun. It’s really cute to watch the kids interect. It gives some fun hints to personalities. We’ve always known Charlotte to be the sassy one but I suspect that George(though shy when confronted with a wall of cameras and people yelling at him) might take after his mom with a cheeky sense of humor! Hanging out with the cousins just allows us to see it.

My parents were both only children, so I don't have any 1st cousins and pictures like this show me what I missed out on. 1. George and Charlotte don’t have any first cousins yet either! Pippa’s expected baby will be their first, first cousin. Savannah, Isla and Mia are their second cousins. :-) But it is great that they see each other. I have close relationships with some of my second cousins to this day, and our grown children (third cousins!) are all quite close in age and they keep in touch. It’s really nice; it’s a very grounding thing, to know the people that have the same great-great-grandparents as you.

    2. I have no first cousins but tons and tons of second and third or however that works out (the ones my age are confusing because my great -great grandmother is their granny) It really doesn't matter much, labeling them. They were just really nice to grow up with. If course I hope the same for the Cute Cambridges.

    2. Daria, like you I grew up without cousins. Mine all lived in another country and I seldom saw them. For my own three children and my brother's three children, there has always been an amazing bond. Now, they are all parents with their own children and they make an effort to get together every few months. My grandchildren also love being with their cousins. Their parents (my kids) plan a cousin's get together at least once a month. For William and Kate's children ,they can't just go to a local playground, so having relatives the same age is a bonus.

  32. First, I wish Prince Phillip a very Happy Birthday and many years of good health & happiness. I miss seeing him and his often hilarious quips! Such a wonderful treat to see Prince William, Duchess Kate, George and Charlotte, playing with their cousins at the Pollo grounds! Kate is so naturally gorgeous, ever elegant! I love seeing her interact with her children. George and Charlotte seem so happy and normal. You can see from the photos what a delightful, strongwilled, handful Charlotte may be. The thought of it makes me laugh! I hope she keeps her spunk, as she gets older. And, it is a joy to see George so happy, playing, and just be a little boy (with super good manners, of course). I do not mean to sound rude or critical, but I do wonder about one thing: Is it standard practice there for little girls to not wear shorts or bloomers-under their dresses? Some online newsites show additional photos from today, showing Charlotte and her cousin, playing or sitting on the grass, and their undies are in clear view. I was a little surprised about that. Maybe it's just a culture thing.

    2. Interesting comment from NC. We in the North East area of the US do not have our children wear shorts under their dresses. Summer attire is much lighter in fabric and can photograph one way but appear different in person. Culture thing? No not in most parts of the US.

      Delete
    3. in photos from i think it was the Canada tour, with the kids, Charlotte did have on bloomers that matched her dress. I just assumed she had them on here

    4. Kate went to great effort when they were on the balcony yesterday, to cover Charlottes bottom when she picked her, you could see her puling down the back of her dress, so Kate does pay attention to these things

      Delete
    5. Nothing wrong at all with a little girl playing in her dress with just underwear, even when my now 30 year old daughter was that young she wore dresses most all of the time with nothing but underwear.

      Delete
    6. I have the same thought---there's nothing wrong except they did not give their permission and the photos are forever as opposed to briefly seeing kids' underwear as they tumble around. If I were a little girl, as I once was, a pair of shorts would have made me happier!

      Delete
    7. What a fun day out for the Cambridges!
Peggy, I agree with you about putting some little cotton stretch shorts (same colour as the dress) on under the dress, I always did that with my daughter. It feels more secure than just undies, and in today’s world with cameras everywhere, it’s sensible. I also wondered about George playing with a gun. My brothers and I had toy guns “way back when” and we didn’t turn out violent, but again, it’s a different world today. I didn’t let my kids play with guns, and neither did any of our friends. Interesting! I hope the Christening is soon, I am looking forward to seeing Prince Louis again!

    8. Just adding to what I said about George playing with a gun, and a knife as seen on the news sites. I had the discussion with my very level headed son, who said "that is just training wheels for Prince George. He has been surrounded by armed guards and protection officers all his life, what did they think would happen". How true. George will grow up to know how to handle guns and weapons responsibly. He will hunt at Balmoral, and probably join the army, navy or airforce at some stage. He knows he needs to be protected at all times. So probably in those circles it is the norm to play with gun toys, whereas else in society, we are moving away from it. An interesting conversation to have though, no judgement on my behalf at all.

    9. Maybe its cultural. I'm from the southern US & where I live girls wearing dresses who will be tumbling or climbing play equipment in public places often are dressed with lightweight cotton shorts or bike type shorts underneath or in cooler weather with leggings underneath. Of course, where I live girls also wear shorts frequently vs dresses for playtime. At home, running through a sprinkler in hot weather tiny children Charlotte's age (but not too much older than that) might wear only underpants. But that's at home or in more private settings. In public, you never know who has a camera or what an observer's motivations might be. And leggings or even shorts underneath may protect from some scrapes in case of a fall.

      Delete
    10. I have my 6 year old daughter wear shorts under her dress. Almost every time. Otherwise she pulls us her dress and exposes her undies. She is a rough and tough little girl, but likes to wear dresses. Also, when I wear a dress there are many times I still wear shorts underneat and I'm 30.

      Delete
    11. I've never heard of little girls wearing shorts beneath their dresses. They're little girls, they're going to play around and their underwear might show, so what? Charlotte should be able to play just as freely as other girls her age who aren't in the public eye and not worry about having her underwear show at age 3.
This reminds me of Leonore of Sweden. The problem is not little girls playing and not wearing shorts, the problem is the media. It is incredibly inappropriate for a photographer to sell and for media to publish pictures of little girls with their underwear showing.
Maybe I don't blame W&K anymore for hiding their children away if people are going to publish pictures like these and their 3 year old daughter's underwear becomes a topic of conversation.

      Delete
    12. It is a relatively common thing to for little girls to wear shorts under skirts and dresses, and I don't think it has anything to do with what area of the US you're in. For younger ones, little bloomers are often paired with dresses in the stores. Currently Gap Kids sells "cartwheel shorts" just for this purpose. If Gap Kids is selling them, then there's obviously a market for them.

I was wondering why Princess Charlotte is always wearing a floral dress. Very cute, but for something like this I would have my daughter wear shorts and a T-shirt (upscale versions, of course, though for a Polo match).

      Delete
    13. I guess I'm too old to get the whole shorts/leggings under a dress fad. 😊 In my mind, a dress should be dressier than wearing jeans or pants. If I need armor under it, I will pass, thank you very much. 😀

I'm with 13.31. This calls for decency and, dare I suggest, a bit of common sense where the press is concerned.

      Delete
    14. My husband is in the military and we’ve lived in the south since I had my little girl who is three. She wears the little “playground” (bike) shorts. It felt more finished when she was in a diaper. I’m less inclined to bother with it now. I do think it’s required by some schools and that might be why it’s so common.

      Delete
    15. We had this conversation almost 60 years ago in California. We all wore shorts under our dresses, since dresses were required at school in those days, and since we wanted to play on all the equipment on the playground at recess, and since we didn't want to continue to endure the teasing of the little boys when they caught a glimpse of our underwear.

      Delete
    16. I never heard of wearing shorts under a little dress - tights perhaps if it was cold. I must be showing my age too.

      Delete
    17. The reason schools mandate biker shorts/shorts/leggings under dresses is that little girls, like little boys often do things like headstands, handstands, cartwheels, hanging upside down from monkey bars etc. and as you can imagine these activities can reveal way more than children in playgrounds need to be exposed to. Nobody wants girls to be made fun of because they were wearing glitter panties or whatever.
There is nothing prudish about it. In the public sphere we all have to wear clothes so that we don't reveal private parts of ourselves. This is the same thing. Maybe this was not so much of a thing when you were growing up Julia - because I suspect that girls were often not encouraged to rough and tumble quite as much ?

      Delete
    18. I don't think it's a question of age. We have now learnt that shorts underneath dresses are a thing in the US but I have never seen them in Europe and while they may exist here, too, they're definitely not a big thing. And schools certainly don't mandate them here.
But either way, maybe everyone could consider whether it's necessary or nice it is to discuss a 3-year-old girls underwear. I know you all mean well but I think it is weird to discuss a little girl's underwear, Princess or not.

      Delete
    19. Thanks so much for this comment. It is so wrong to sexualise a child, suggesting underwear should be hidden?! That must be a US sentiment (it does not exist here in Ireland) and should be deleted from this thread as very disturbing. She is 3!

      Delete
    20. I think the problem is that there are disturbed people out there and they need to not have any children as their visual outlet. Also, being only 3, why can't boys and girls both dress to have a good time?

      Delete
    21. People here were just worried about Charlotte being photographed showing her undies, that’s all. There are cameras everywhere these days unfortunately, whether you are a princess or not. Little bike shorts under dresses are “a thing” in Australia, and are sold everywhere like Target, K-mart, school uniform shops and other children’s clothing shops. Little bike shorts are also incredibly comfortable and worn from a young age up to the teenage years. It’s just common sense these days.

    22. I thought shorts under dresses were so stupid gen I was little and that was also not something we did at my house. However - I don't know if it's the internet or what, and I will not give much detail here, but people who want to hurt children are everywhere. I'm shocked by the numbers. I'm shocked at people who use pix of their precious children or grandchildren as profile pix on Facebook. So I would much rather be safe and not worry.

The kids are just the cutest ever. I can't wait to see Prince Louis. I'm guessing he might look a lot like his big brother.

  36. Was about going to bed...and found this surprise :)

So nice to see them out and about like a normal family. The kids are adorable as always but the thing I like most is Kate...relaxed and smiling...and running around in heals! And that in this fotos we can see her maternal side :) Best fotos Iˋve ever seen of Kate and the kids...it shows them simply the way they are!

Love her off duty look...which makes her look much younger :)

So now I can go to bed with a smile on my face :)

Thank you so much, Charlotte, for this wonderful surprise! The photos are just lovely! In some of them, one can see how much George has grown - the transition from a "little boy" to a "schoolboy" has never been clearer, at least to me. My absolute favourite is the photo of him jumping - almost flying - his arms and legs look so long and he has this flair of a really lively kid! William and Kate have been blessed with such beautiful children. And I'm sure they are very loving, caring and hands-on parents.

    1. Zora, I'm right there with you!! George is growing up. I was thinking the same thing; I absolutely see a difference here. And Charlotte will be a beauty like her mom.

These photos brightened a cloudy and cool day here. I love seeing Kate in Mom-mode and it's clear how blessed the children are to have her. Likewise for William, of course. ;-)

  60. What beautiful photos. I love her natural look. Actually, my first thought when I saw these pictures is that I bet she is nursing little Louis. When you're nursing you're just bigger, significantly bigger, and you have to wear a nursing bra and pads in the cups for leakage, and clothes don't fit as they should, and yes, buttons pop quite a lot. I nursed my kids and I remember feeling like I was popping out of everything. It might explain her more "strained" manner lately too. Maybe not a lack of smiles, or the blues, but just a growing baby having night feedings, and if she's nursing, a nanny isn't doing those feedings. All speculation, but anyway...

As others have stated, I think these photos are so wonderful. She looks so relaxed and the children are surrounded with love.

And oh my goodness, kudos for her that she can run in those heels. I'd twist my ankle instantly!

  66. I always felt very uneasy when my children were small infants and I had to be away from them for an extended time. I had to get over it quickly when I had to go back to work though. But when they were very young, under three months or so, any time I had to be away, or went alone anywhere like shopping, I would get very anxious and feel a desperate need to get back to them. Although they were in good hands with either my husband or my sister, but,it was an innate maternal feeling with no rational logic behind it. Perhaps this is all Kate is feeling now. I don't think she looks very down and I think it's quite a jump to think she might be suffering baby blues. Probably just the anxiety I described and exhaustion!

  67. How lovely to see Kate and G & C supporting William at the polo.
This particular event is very much a family day out especially on the Sunday and the weather couldn't have been better for a day of fun.
I am so glad Kate took the children to support William and we saw just what a lovely family the Cambridges are and what a natural hands on mother Kate is interacting with G & C who had a wonderful time both with Mum and their cousins and other friends. I would have loved to see some photo of them coming down the helter skelter however the wonderful photos we did see gave us a real feel of just how lovely they are. George has really grown into a lovely little boy and Charlotte is a real character I feel put her together with Mia and wait for the entertainment but it was nice seeing the friendship between Savannah and Charlotte. I believe Laura Meade was pregnant when she attended Pippa's wedding so I wondered whether the little boy who appeared to be quite young was hers'.
I do hope we see Kate & the children more often at the polo especially now they are based at KP during the polo season.
William has always been close to Zara & Peter and Kate appears to get on very well with them and their families

I need Kate to stop wearing such darling and affordable dresses- this is the third since May I couldn't help myself but to purchase!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Kate is so relatable and relaxed (if not slightly disheveled). It’s nice to see, actually. I’m sure she chose a dress because pants post-birth are awful. Previously, she’s snapped so fast. It’s lovely to see a sort of more typical new baby look (well. Typical except the perfect hair and clean clothes. )
I agree that little shorts for Charlotte would be great, but only because of photographers. it’s unnecessary, really. She’s a little girl. It’s just underwear. The world will try to make it into a big deal and that is sad.
And as for George and the gun- better to let him play with it and set appropriate boundaries (no aiming at people, etc), then to pretend it doesn’t exist. In his world, it most certainly will. And frankly, he probably sees armed guards and members of military often enough. Why not let him play pretend soldier? Forbidding it only forces the behavior into hiding. It’s normal and no big deal.

    1. It's so lovely seeing that they have truly succeeded in living a regular family life,( in their private life) & that the kids are playing just like other kids all around! lol :) ahhhh boys with their plastic toy guns. I never let our boys have them, but I remember another Mom telling me that even if you don't let them play with a plastic toy one, that they will play pretend with sticks & yes mine did! lol :) "Cops & Robbers" & "Cowboys & Indians" were a staple for my boys, complete with "stick guns"! lol :)

      Delete
    2. I also found my children, including girls, using sticks for guns after I had decided there would be no toy guns in the family! Hard to win that one in our gun oriented society.

      Delete
    3. But actually, none of my children own guns as adults. Children do learn the family culture even if they break the rules as kids.

  73. I admit I have mixed feelings when I see these kinds of posts. For one I am always jolted to see that "off duty" Kate favors simple off-the-rack affordable clothes, practical shoes, no pantyhose, straight hair, and very little makeup. And then you see her on duty and sometimes I think she almost hides behind her uniform of a coat-dress, stilettos, pantyhose, fascinator hats, curled hair (often with hair extensions), and the heavy smoky-eyed makeup. Like when she came out of the hospital with Louis a mere 7 hours after giving birth there she was with her full uniform: heels, hose, designer dress, bouncy curls, heavy makeup.

I wish the two Kates could merge more. I realize she has duties but I sometimes feel like she still isn't comfortable in her role as a public figure and thus dolls herself up as much as possible.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I'm sure Kate feels that she needs to look a certain way when "on duty" but I think it's because it's expected of her in her position to have a very polished presentation, rather than not being comfortable in her role. And having a go-to "uniform" of coat-dresses is probably to make things easier for herself and her staff. However I do agree, and strongly, that she shouldn't have felt the need to get so dolled up when leaving the hospital with Charlotte and Louis. I realize she knows these photos will be seen for years to come by millions of people, and she wants to look her best. But to me, these are "off-duty" moments that need not call for the full uniform. I always thought she looked far more beautiful when leaving the hospital with George - more casual attire, natural hair, less makeup. Her pure joy was all the adornment she needed to look her best.

      Delete
    2. Ivy Lin, surely every young mother has a casual "outing-with-the-kids" look and then a professional "off-to-work" look. I wore jeans, running shoes, hair in a pony tail and little makeup when I was on an outing with my children. But for work, I wore a business suit, heels, panty hose, styled hair and makeup. How is Kate any different from women everywhere? I disagree with you that Kate isn't comfortable in her role as a public figure and that she hides behind her designer outfits.

      Delete
    3. Sometimes a uniform can help one feel there is a distinction between their private & public life. Just a thought. :) I forget who first brought that up, but it immediately came to mind when I read your thoughts. I think it probably has some merit. I too would love a merger, but if that's what makes things work for Kate, who am I to want more from her. :)

      Delete
    4. I think she is comfortable in her public role but I do agree she has a work wardrobe and non work look.I think that is smart to do. But there is lots of overlap, think of her appearance at sporting events she is doing as part of her BRF work. She is typically in workout pants and jackets, make up but typically more casual hair and make up look. Actually I found her shoes at this event not at all practical:), and she had styled her hair and straightened it and was wearing make up, just lighter like most of us do on the weekends. She also still wears quite a few off the rack clothes when out and about on formal duties. I am thinking that trip to India which was a real mixture.

      Delete
    5. I could name a lot of famous women who have "uniform" days and off duty days, but I will refrain and not have the thread go off on a major tangent.

Once upon a time, before casual Fridays turned into "whatever" days Monday through Friday, people did dress up to go to work and their professional wardrobe differed from their weekend attire. No one questioned whether the difference related to a comfort level. Dressing professionally was expected and most people took pride in doing so.

Kate married into the BRF and is a future Queen. Of course she has to dress the part. Doesn't HM? Doesn't she get "dolled up" when she's on duty, while wearing comfortable shoes with a headscarf and raincoat when she's not working?

      Delete
    6. Well I guess I'll just say that I don't find Kate's "work" clothes that professional looking. Actual working women even in workplaces that require business attire do not leave the house in 4 inch stilettos, several thousand dollar designer frocks, curly hair extensions, and flowery fascinator hats. She's not actually "working" in the sense that she has a 9-5 job. She's "working" as a goodwill ambassador of sorts to promote the image of the BRF. And so I think a degree of authenticity is needed. All those things she wears separates her from people.

I think this was the most extreme when she left the hospital with Louis. I was frankly shocked that she was completely dolled up and even had the curly hair extensions. No one expects someone who gave birth 7 hours ago to look like that.

I mean I think there's a reason William and Harry stick to a simple blue suit when they go out to "work." The point is to be more authentic and relatable.

      Delete
    7. I don't see how Kate's "professional" look is different from that of many other royal women in the past or present, in the BRF or elsewhere. Margaret and the Queen Mother were always dressed in their best for their appointments and not, I'm sure, inexpensively too. Was Diana's look more authentic thirty years ago, or was it just as expensive and or not relatable to many? Diana's hair and makeup were also done when she introduced her two sons to the world on the hospital steps. I also don't think it's fair to compare Kate's look to William's or Harry's. And just how much do their simple blue "uniforms" cost? I'm sure their suits are not cheap, even if they try to blend in with the ordinary man. Kate has worn inexpensive outfits to some of her engagements. However, regardless of what they wear or how they look or act, the reality is that royalty are separated from most people in so many other ways.

Seems like James Whatling is a pretty well known royal photographer, so it doesn't seem likely he wasn't noticed, snapping away all those shots of the family at play. The purpose of a gun, the reason it was designed, is to kill another living thing. George may be growing up with protection officers and military all around him, but he should still not be encouraged to think that a gun is a toy.

  84. It's great to see them together at this family outing and Kate looks glowing and wonderful. Lovely dress but I'd suggest something more practical to sit on the grass and play comfortably with the kids, especially when photographs are around...
For the same reasons I'd suggest also a ponytail for Kate and leggings or similar, underneath the dress for Charlotte.
They are such a loving family. Love them all! Can't wait for Prince Louis christening...

  86. I'm perturbed that Kate didn't attend Garter today. It's such a high profile event and looks bad (imo) after her attendence at Trooping and polo last weekend. I get she is on maternity break but its one afternoon and would have made great impression on the general public.

    1. Agree, erika. But mostly I want to say it's nice to see your name. I miss your bright and shining self!

    2. I disagree. It is a high profile event but a very exclusive one. It would not have looked good if she had attended it and not a garden party. And at the garter she is only a spectator of the ceremony, she has no active role to play. Anyway she is on maternity leave and the "just an afternoon" may not be easy is she is breastfeeding. Not the same as sitting on the grass for a couple of hours next door to your home.

    4. Welcome back, Erika! I was also sorry not to see Kate on Garter Day. But I think it was easier for her to do Trooping, since the palaces are near each other and she could manage it from home. Everyone has seen her with her family twice in recent days, and once with almost the whole royal family. The trip to Windsor would have been disrupting, especially when it is so busy. Between all the guests and crowds for Garter and Ascot, it must be a bit of a madhouse. I am satisfied with the charming glimpses we have had. Please keep joining us!

    5. PS I should have included the Sussex wedding, of course, and the christening of Prince Louis is coming soon. We are really seeing quite a lot of Kate and her family.

    6. Hello Patricia:) and, yes, I agree with all you say.

For me, it isn't a matter of getting to see Kate but more a matter of supporting William at his tenth anniversary of the Garter. I thought she might show up for that. It is an exclusive event and her absence as an onlooker seems glaring to me. However, you are correct. We have been spoiled with the appearances she has made since Louis' birth, and we do have the christening to look foward to.

  89. Queen Letizia has been visiting the U.S. for the last several days, and I just viewed seven dresses that she has worn. WOW! Every outfit is fabulous. She really has a great eye for fashion.
