Just south of Frankfurt, surrounded by thick forest, this is the oldest university town in Germany. Heidelberg is a very appropriate stop for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - it has been twinned with Cambridge since 1965.
William and Kate's first stop in Heidelberg was the German Cancer Research Centre.

The establishment of a national cancer research centre in Germany was initiated by Heidelberg surgeon Professor Karl Heinrich Bauer. The Centre was set up in 1964 by resolution of the State government of Baden-Wuerttemberg as a foundation under public law. In 1975, the Centre became a member of the Association of National Research Centers. Ongoing research programmes include Cell Biology and Tumor Biology, Structural and Functional Genomics, Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention, Tumor Immunology, Innovative Cancer Diagnostics and Therapy, Infection and Cancer and Translational Cancer Research.
They met researchers and visited the stem cell research lab to learn more about the important work being done there.
The Duke and Duchess received a briefing on leukaemia.

The royals proceeded to the centre of Heidelberg, situated by the riverside and overlooked by the ruins of its famous castle.
They posed with local children for photos.
They wandered through the central market square, on which a British-German market was set up offering local food and drink.
After a quick lesson from local apprentices, The Duke and Duchess got to grips with pretzel making.
Kate enjoyed it immensely judging by this photo.
William and Kate were led by the Mayor.

Then it was time for a quick change of clothes for a very fun event!

'He said: "It's really helpful to have a visit from the Duke and Duchess as they publicise the importance of work we do here. "The UK and Germany are leaders in this field of stem cell research," said the expert who has been based in Heidelberg for seven years. He told William and Kate about the latest developments in stem cell research.
The Leeds University graduate, told them how his team focuses on the question whether and how an accumulation of DNA damage in stem cells is the causes for ageing of an organ system. Such damage may cause exhaustion of the stem cell pool and loss of the organ's capacity to regenerate. The work is particularly important in research into leukaemia.
William said, "Ladies first" when he was asked to look at the cells through a microscope. Afterwards Kate said: "It's in 3D too, which is amazing." William, who also looked through the microscope, asked how far down the line the centre's stem cell research was and added: "It's fascinating work."

'Kate had jokingly told her crew: "No pressure, but I do want to beat my husband," before the race and she was given a huge advantage over William after an Olympic gold medalist was chosen to be in her boat. Filip Adamski, who was in the winning German eight in the London 2012 Games, was selected as her stroke. The rest of both crews were made up of local amateur crews from Cambridge and Heidelberg.
William, with a hint of bravado, insisted it was "fine" when told he was up against an Olympic champion as he arrived on the banks of the Neckar. But he admitted to his wife: "This could be a challenge," before setting off without any advice on how to cox.
Kate spent several minutes taking tips from her teammate before setting off, admitting she was "worried about crashing" and indicating with her hands that she feared zig-zagging along the water.'

This evening, The Duke and Duchess will attend a reception in the vintage mirrored hall of Clärchens Ballhaus.
Good mixture of engagements on this tour. This Cancer research visit ties in very nicely with Williams patronage of the Royal Marsden.
ReplyDeleteNice to see Kate in a different colour :) It's different for her but still very much her standard silhouette. I really like the brocade/jacquard texture in the fabric. Not the best accessorizing (Imagine red acc.!!) but it's neutral enough and that is just a fashion nitpick. She's perfectly appropriate for getting the job done!
I would not have guessed it being Jenny Packham! But it makes sense because it's well sewn!
Nice look on William as well. I like when he mixes it up (but just like with Kate I'm OK with his more uniform looks as well)

ReplyDeleteThank you thank you Charlotte!! I am so excited she wore yellow. In an earlier post I mentioned how I wear a daffodil pin in April as it symbolizes (for many) the fight against cancer. And this dress reminds me of daffodils. I was reading about the Research Center and the work it is doing; I was especially interested in childhood cancer. And leukemia.

Finally she is wearing a dress with short sleeves! Yesterday she must have been dying with that coat. Don't like the wedges (would have preferred her Gianvito Rossi shoes) but think she chose them for being comfortable for a day full of engagements.

DeleteI have never found shoes with heavy enough soles to keep cobblestones from hurting my feet. Maybe wedges would do it, but then I would turn my ankles if the shoes slipped into the crevices between stones. Cobblestones make beautiful landscape material, but not so wonderful for walkways!

DeleteI agree. They have the luxury to visit some amazing places (and skip all the crowded people) but they really loose some of the experience of the places.
I agree it's a shame, especially since they brought the kids with them. It would be nice if they had more time together as a family. I thought by bringing the kids they would be more involved in engagements but I guess not.
DeleteThe children are really too young to be counted on to behave for more than a few minutes, at best. The trip is mainly in the nature of a good will tour, and bringing along the children was a diplomatic master stroke. It's a demonstration of friendliness toward the host country, speaks to their concern for the future, and not incidentally guarantees even more photographic coverage than they normally engender. And I'm sure the little ones were content with their nanny.

ReplyDeleteWhilst my fashions views have been all over the place from love it to not so much - I have nothing but good to say about the itinerary. A strong mix of serious engagements with less serious, really big crowds for the walkabout. The museums, the memorials, the meeting with the children, the garden parties and now this visit today have made for a well-balanced tour. Someone did their planning well and it seems to me from the positive reception and good speeches by William that this tour will do as much towards achieving its good-will goals as anything can.
I agree. The planning has been great! And such big and excited crowds! And all the hugs yesterday were wonderful! As you said, a great balance between engagements. Sure, the candy making and rowing are "fun" elements, but it gives us a picture of the place they are visiting and in the future if I happen to go to Germany, these places and their activities have a much higher chance of ringing a bell.

I also agree Claudia - would love to see this balance of engagements at home - and if we did, the crowds that are appearing here might emerge for a royal visit yet again. I still dream of an 'at home' tour by young royals but realise it might step on C & C's toes. (Charles and Camilla are presently in Cornwall - Camilla with ice cream once more -her favourite photo prop - but the crowds are small by comparison.)
It does show that the idea that secretaries coordinate and royals don't schedule events at the same time is a fallacy The queen also had a major engagement with the Governor General of Canada and she received a dazzling sapphire brooch made of Canadian gems - everyone should go to the Jewel Vault for a look. Thank you Canada! Kate may not be a brooch wearer - I still hope, that white suit cried for one - but this one would make a lovely hair ornament for her someday -maybe even as a loan on a Canadian tour.
I love a mix of heavier and light engagements and this tour has done this so well, that I'm even smiling at yet another boat race - I suppose the beautiful Necker is irresistible. Personally, I've enjoyed walking along it with Leo - that's enough exercise for me. Kate looks fine for that and the photos are charming.

DeleteThe Queen, and the beautiful snowflake brooch, were in blue and white yesterday that coordinated with the Cambridges. I suppose that was coincidental, but sweet. The brooch will make a wonderful alternative to the maple leaf brooch. I have liked the Governor General and his wife since the Duke and Duchess's Canada tour last year. I am glad they presented the Canadian gift to the Queen.

She does indeed have a "uniform" since at first glance of the pictures, I thought "oh a repeat". Nice pictures and she does look lovely.

DeleteAlice. I agree. It reminds me of hotel bedspread fabric. Couldn't have imagined that fabric as a dress for that reason. I like her in yellow but do not like the dress. Don't like the earrings either. They look cheap and the style is not pretty, too complicated and busy. Just ugly. Still don't like her hair cut or that middle part. Except for the controversially blue coat, I think whoever planned her wardrobe for this tour needs to take a very long vacation. I am so sadly perplexed by this tour wardrobe.I think they have a secret enemy agent who has infiltrated her wardrobe team. The agent is out to make her style look frumpy and very weird. Kate's image, is after all, hugely frontline strategy. Very important.

ReplyDeleteOn a day where so far I've loved everything, I would hate to be as much a ray of sunshine as Kate looks, even without her earrings, so I do want to say I'm disappointed the 'thought police' seems to be out in force for this tour demanding that people leave the blog if they even make fairly nicely worded comments about not being happy with Kate's choices or saying that they're 'going to pick up their marbles and stop reading comments' because someone else didn't like something Kate wore.
ReplyDeleteTo me, this inhibits people's freedom to express themselves about an outfit without being made uncomfortable about their opinions. I'm not suggesting that someone else can't say - 'well, I happen to love it' or 'I've absolutely loved everything on this tour' and that's great. By why force your opinion on others so harshly and some of the language used by self-appointed 'Kate defenders' has been quite brutal demanding that others get out or feel bad about not liking something.
- This is a complicated tour with the possibility for interesting fashion choices. Kate has been a little daring which I think is wonderful - far better than boring, but that does mean that her choices will spark different responses - I've said it until everyone's tired of it - we a group of (mostly I think) women of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds. A twenty-year-old may not feel the same as a sixty-year-old, a German may like to point out that it looks like KP got their colour history muddled. (It seems the blue bit did come from them.)
Saying we all have to be cheerleaders for Kate waving our pom-poms, if that's the right word, in unison and not breaking formation wouldn't make for interesting - or more to the point, honest opinions. So could we not just be a little more open to differing opinions without taking it personally? I'm sure Kate wouldn't. I've taken criticism, sometimes quite forceful, in my working life, without thinking the person making it hated me personally and Kate is a working women - her fashion choices represent an entire nation.
The wonderful thing to me about this blog had been the freedom to make comments without too much personal judgement about the posters - there is a Kate blog out there where if you don't like everything Kate wears, you'll be shot down by avenging harpies and there's one out there where if you like Kate, you're going to feel arrows are being shot at you as if you were Saint Sebastian, but this blog has allowed us to speak freely within Charlotte's generous perimeters - and I know she has to edit many thing none of us would be comfortable reading or want to have published and wish she didn't have to see. So why not be generous with each other?
Couldn't agree more with your sentiments, Julia. A lot of new names getting all worked up too; don't quite understand that. I did enjoy the poster yesterday saying someone was stupid and infantile for saying they didn't like Kate's clothes though, especially as I could visualize her jumping up and down and holding her breath while writing it. (Anett, you had a great response to that!) Physician, heal thyself!

DeleteHi Julia, thank you for your remarks. From my perspective it is perhaps the language used on both sides of the spectrum that might be a problem. Many of the comments can be quite dictatorial in expression and that upsets or inhibits further comment. Language in recent times has been poorly taught and I just think often there is a lack of ability to express an opinion as just that and the opinion comes over as fact to be disputed at one's peril. I often think that was not the writer's intent but that is how it reads. Perhaps we should all slow down, reread and evaluate our comments before we hit the send button.

Hello Julia. I am a couch potato when it comes to the comment section, I post occasionally, but read often. I agree with you about the complexities of being royal and seeming royal and looking to be royal and I rather enjoy all of the discussion around that. Where I draw the line and where I often consider not participating is when commenters use words like “inappropriate” and “Kate needs to do…” and what she wears is “horrible”. Kate never looks “horrible”. She is never “inappropriate”. She always looks well groomed, put together, engaged, and by all accounts from those who are actually there, she is well read and well informed. Isn’t that her duty? Isn’t that what we should be critiquing? Some think she doesn’t work enough. Fair enough. Personally, I think her “work” as much as all the rest, is to raise well adjusted, engaged, sensitive, caring future royals. She can’t, shouldn’t and wouldn’t do that in the public eye. So I think she should be given a bit of a pass until the kids are a little older. How many engagements a year did Princess Mary do when her kids were young? Yes, she does a lot now, but the kids are older and she has had many years to adjust to her life. I know I will get a lot of push back on this, but that’s my opinion and I know it isn’t everyone’s. Also, the constant comparisons to Letizia – Kate “should” emulate Letizia, Kate “really needs to” take cues from Letizia. These are the comments that I find unnecessary and sometimes objectionable in their ferocity.
DeleteSo, there is in my opinion, some justification for some to be tired of the constant negativity. Personally, the whole conversation around what shoes she wore to the concentration camp was perplexing to me. She wasn’t inappropriate in any way. Sure, some wouldn’t have worn open toed shoes to such a place. Fine. But it wasn’t inappropriate. The shoes took over the conversation when the conversation could have been about the place, the history, and the demeanor of Kate and William while they were there, etc. That appearance was perfect in that it drew attention to the worst of our history and allowed for two of its survivors to get some mental health –if not closure, then comfort.
I agree, we should be generous with each other. But I would ask that the generosity include Kate. She will never wear an outfit that everyone agrees with. Fair enough. But let’s embrace her right to make such choices.
Charlotte does a great job moderating this blog. If differing opinions on the fashion are not allowed, it would be boring and I would stop checking in. I shouldn't have to couch my opinion with "everything else she wears is great, she would look lovely in a burlap sack," etc. before giving an honest opinion, either. Adults differ in taste and opinions, or the world would be a ho-hum place.

Thankfully it appears to to come from a few only however there are times when these aggressive comments towards individual posts are quite a shock to read. Charlotte you do an outstanding job with your work here including the moderation of contributor's comments and we appreciate you so much. An inclusive and kind environment allows those quieter souls like myself the opportunity to express honest opinions and respectfully 'agree to differ' from others who express alternative perspectives. Let's be fair and gentle with one another please :-)
DeleteA by product of social media in my opinion, people want to be able to block anything they disagree with or don't like, or any topic that gives them the slightest discomfort. Very sad state of affairs. For goodness sake is it the end of the world if people didn't like a dress and you did? Or if you thought something was nice but not memorable, but others thought it was a show stopper?
DeleteHow on earth will people survive and manage when serious issues are at hand? If reading comments on a lifestyle and fashion blog about a member of the royal family gets you worked up, I frankly think there may be much larger issues at play in your life and your anger is misdirected. Come read Charlotte's post, comment if you want to, then move on! That's all it takes. No one should be getting worked up over opinions here.
I understand dyed in the wool Kate fans don't want to hear one bad word about her, but how many times does Charlotte need to say she welcomes different points of view here? If almost everyone in the world loved something Kate wore, said or did, but one person didn't, that one person is entitled to feel that way and express that.
William and Kate are in a very transitional period right now it seems (and some of us hope) so there are going to be a lot of changes, and all of them won't sit well with all of us! That's ok! Also, when I knew there would be no more children for me, I actually relaxed a little and started focusing on myself more, did some more shopping, some more pampering. Kate may be going through that now, and experimenting a bit with fashion again, thinking as a woman and not always a mother. That's great, but is going to get very different reactions sometimes.
Julia is right, the judgemental tone has been off the charts. (And it's more than a touch ironic that people who claim they don't read the comment section anymore, are able to jump in and support a comment critical of the section... Surely that requires reading, no?) I don't think I've ever taken as much umbrage at something directed toward me personally as others have when something is said about Kate.
And I'll remind everyone, we likely have much more in common with each other than any of us do, or ever will, with Kate.
I suppose it's all about expectations, isn't it. Those who want to read lovely reviews of her clothes are tremendously disappointed right now (except for maybe this post which has been generally positive). Those who would like to see less fluff might also be disappointed right now. But I will say that this fluff disliker has resigned herself to seeing fluff and isn't getting as worked up about it as she used to.
DeleteI hesitate to jump in but....I agree with everything about plus some of the negativity. There's a huge difference between discussing what we like/dislike about an outfit(cut, color, style, fit on Kate) and going into judgements. We all have both. It's when I feel like comments have turned to judgements(she clearly was not thinking when she....) that things get ugly. Now that Kate has gotten her flyaway hemlines under control(mostly), she's really never inappropriate. Not to our tastes, absolutely. Maybe not something we would wear to a specific event, sure. But inappropriate and thoughtless, call to mind something like go-go boots and a tube top, which I have yet to see Kate wear to any engagement.

Alimai - I agree everyone should watch their language. I found myself in the heat of of this using too strong language. Feelings run away with you. We had been doing much better on tolerating divergent opinions and I hope we can slip back to that. I agree in many occasions, I think it's poor wording. - and remember some here aren't native English speakers- they express themselves so well it's easy to forget that.
DeleteThe last best I'm hearing is that this wasn't just Palmer - that Kensington Palace did put out information about the colour. If so, it sounds like someone at the palace didn't do their homework sufficiently. (I wouldn't think it was Kate.) I found the discussion of colour quite interesting - both the original story and the tactful modern German surprise. It was a lovely colour on Kate - and we'll leave it at that.
Marny - Kate's work schedule as it stands will be controversial - reflecting how people feel about raising children, protecting the royal family (the children's future) and working mums in general. It's an important issue so I don't think it can be swept under the rug - and goes beyond Kate including William and Harry's schedule. Let's just say I'm hoping work loads will increase (Mary did work full time when she had small children and except for a recent break Victoria does.) This doesn't mean a full-time-hardly-see-the-children as many working mums face (and young women are traditionally the strongest royal supporters and most have to work.) What's best for the children is hard to say - leaving George to inherit a damaged institution would't be good and the work issue is extending outside of traditional royalists heavily into the mainstream of those who loosely support the royals. Also republicanism is rising rapidly amongst the young especially. So it's not a simple issue and may put people off - but they should be aware of the whole picture and it isn't the picture many of us would like it to be and is likely to worsen when the queen dies. For now, the success of this tour (whose value was questioned) should leave a positive glow.
I would agree Kate never looks horrible and not liking an outfit doesn't mean she looks bad in it. There can be questions of appropriateness. I'm not in favour of massive comparisons with other royal ladies - Letizia has her style, Maxima has hers (the lord help us) and so forth. But I always look at royal fashion two ways - subjectively (what I like) and objectively (how an outfit works for the occasion.) I liked the floral dress but I looked at what other royal ladies have worn to the camps (the queen, Maxima, Victoria, Sofia of Spain and Letizia of Spain at Yad Vashem. Based on what all these ladies wore (quiet grey or black) I can't say anyone was out of line or overly critical commenting on Kate's florals. She did dress in a very different way. And a large part of being a royal lady is what you wear.
I will say with this I feel Kate's advisers bear responsibility here and should have scheduled a change for her - both to make sure she wore an outfit that wasn't controversial and to separate a deeply profound event (where William and Kate seemed to respond appropriately) from a happy one.
So I do say generosity to all including Kate but to remember Kate is a public figure who represents, with her choices, her nation.

The thing is, I think most of the time when someone posts a negative opinion on an outfit choice do still really like Kate and like following her work and looks. For the most part anyway. I am a big Royal watcher and a fan of Kate's. Sometimes I have critical things to say about an outfit choice, or something involved with her work, but for the most part I'm a fangirl and have many more positive things to say than negative. My comment yesterday was one of the only comments I've ever made on a Kate blog that was mostly negative in opinion.

Repeatedly, I've read comments about how her choices have been "insensitive", "offensive", "disrespectful" . I've read comments stating Kate does not care, that she is ignorant, that her advisors don't know what they are doing. I even read one stating how stupid she was for wearing an outfit. This goes beyond our differences and preferences as they are personal attacks against her character and agenda. This is where this comment section gone from fun and constructive to downright mean and nasty.
DeleteI don't want this blog to become a place where Kate is only worshipped. I love to read different opinions and ideas as well as add my own. As everyone knows, I do not like everything she wears and does, and have no problem saying that. However, for some reason, some comments have been very cut throat in doing just that, and it has become disturbing to read.
Lastly, both you and Claudia did bring up the topic of if an outfit generates controversy, perhaps, she shouldn't wear it. While I understand the premise, and , yes, she is a tax payer supported public servant representing the people, I think that she is paving the way for a younger generation of royals and she isn't going to look like we all think she should. Times are changing and that can be painful. Rather than wear the expected, Kate may wear the unexpected but that will speak volumes to some people. I rarely become deeply moved by anything but her choice of dress to the camp (almost:)) brought me to tears and elicited an emotional response that the requisite black/ dark solids could not. To me, the Erdem was the most beautiful tribute to those who fell within those gates that she could have mustered. Was it mainatream and traditional- no but it was a heartfelt and lovely which may be even more important.
I agree 100% with your recent posts, Julia. Of course, any post expresses the writer's personal opinions/judgments. And yes, as many have said we should all consider the words we use in our posts while understanding a given word may hold different connotations for different people. I agree with you that judgments about fashion (anyone's fashions, not just Kate's) are often two-pronged: 1. personal liking for the given style, color, etc. and 2. fit of an outfit with a given event. In my posts if I have something negative to say I've tried to separate the two types of judgments. So I might say "Style X isn't my cup of tea but it looks great on Kate and fits Y event." OR "I love X but think it isn't a good fit for Y event because..."
DeleteIt seems to me saying "Kate is always dressed appropriately" is just as much of a personal judgment as saying "I don't think outfit X was appropriate for event Y." But somehow it seems it is being suggested (not by you Julia) that while the first judgment is perfectly acceptable and isn't really a personal judgment at all but is instead a statement of fact, the second judgment is wholly unacceptable and should not be made in the first place much less voiced here. I don't see how actual discussion can take place under those conditions.
Finally, I agree it likely would have been simple for Kate's team to arrange a wardrobe change after the camp visit. A change for the rowing contest was arranged in Germany after all. And I am sure the Polish hosts would have been anxious to accommodate their visitors. Look at what was provided for the children!

ReplyDeleteLove the Jenny Packham garment, the brocade texture is becautiful and I love the dart detail in the front and back of the bodice. She looks like a ray of sunshine. And what a smart choice with the shoes, they are a neutral color and served her well with all of the cobblestone and uneven surfaces included in today's itinerary.

They are definitely attractive and go nicely with the brocade, however I am frugal enough to think that they are way to expensive for gold plate and plastic pearls. Her citrine earrings would be beautiful with this dress.

She clearly loves having a million different pairs of earrings and maybe buying tons of basically throw away pairs to be able to switch it up all the time is just one of her personal indulgences. I personally would not spend the money on so much costume jewelry when I already have a huge selection of great quality pieces.

Totally adore this dress, but yellow is my favorite color ;) I would never have expected it to be a Packham! The fit, cut, and pattern are gorgeous. The shoes, yes, are a miss, but doing that much walking on those streets requires some shoe sacrifice. I'd even have liked to see her in flats, although I'm sure for some that would come across as too informal.

The crowds seem to genuinely be happy to see them and it all seems fun. They're getting a solid billing of meaningful engagements, as well.
I've really enjoyed this tour, so far, and Kate's choices. It's nice to see her throwing some new, more unusual (for her) choices in the mix. If only they'd done this tour last summer when I was over in Germany and could've seen them haha

ReplyDeleteYellow is not my favorite color for Kate or anybody else, but I do like the style of the dress and understand why yellow was chosen. The shoes were a practical choice for the cobblestones, but then I like wedges and wear them often.

I think Kate's outfit is fine. If its purpose was to match a color in the German flag, mission accomplished. I don't think that particular shade of gold is terribly flattering on Kate though. It isn't terrible by any means but I think she looks better in true yellows (like the color block dress) and lighter golds (like her gold brocade coatdress). I can understand wanting to avoid heels for walking on the cobblestones but grey wedges aren't great with a gold dress. And I think the casual rope trim doesn't go with brocade. But maybe it's not possible to buy dressy wedges these days so Kate had to wear an old sportier pair. I also would have liked Kikis instead of this expensive costume pair.
ReplyDeleteI think the colors Will wore were fine. I think we've seen the jacket before and like before, it looks too small! It's as though his tailor forgot he'd be wearing a long-sleeved shirt underneath.
Kate is lovely today, like a ray of sunshine. And William looked quite sharp in his light jacket. What fun at the race! They clearly enjoy outdoorsy activities and a little friendly competition. I know I've said it before but it always bears repeating, thank you again Charlotte for the fabulous work you do on this blog!

I watched tgem live on TV and there was such a sweet moment: william and kate were walking from the down hall down to the river for the rowing competition. Along the way, Kate stopped and gave a hug to a policewoman (or security woman?) with a union jack flag who apparently was a big fan. She is such a sweet and considerate lady! Unfortunately, I haven't seen a pucture of that yet :(

DeleteRF. Me not liking Kate's outfits aside, I do agree that the Queen (and Phillip) are very pleased with the tour. They know the challenges of tours and this one to Poland and Germany was a very politically significant tour. The Queen had to be beside herself with Charlotte's curtsy, posies and diplomatic handshake. (It's obviously in the genes.)

DeleteThis is a winner of an outfit! Bright, fun, summery but also formal enough for a royal visit. My ONLY nitpick is that Kate's hair extensions are very obvious and visible because of the way she parts her hair. There's a poof in the back where the part ends and the extensions begin and the color and texture of the extensions is different from the rest of her hair.
ReplyDeleteIt's even more noticeable when you compare her hair in the dress pictures to her hair in the sporty pictures. She's taken out her extensions and you can see where her natural hairline is.
I do not see it:) She might were extensions, although for what reason? But I do not see proof from any of these photos.
DeleteI don't see any hair extensions either. I think what you're seeing is just her own hair fluffed up a bit in back. The color looks like hers, too. I can't imagine why she would need them since she has beautiful, thick hair.
DeleteAli - she doesn't wear what you may be thinking of typical extensions to make her hair longer, it's a fall that she pins to the back of her head for extra volume. You can clearly see the difference between the two sets of photos. I really don't think it's a big deal, pretty much every female celebrity enhances her hair in some way.

ReplyDeleteI really like the way the itinerary has been planned: On the one hand, William and Kate raise awareness for very serious and important topics (e.g. the Strassenkinder project in Berlin or the visit to Stutthof). On the other hand, they try to connect with people by doing fun activities as well.
IMO, this tour couldn't be better!
I really hope they enjoyed Heidelberg as much as I did when I lived there. I would always recommend visiting this city ;-)

I think overall she looks really nice. It's a very pretty dress, yellow isn't an easy color to wear for most people, but she was able to pull it off!
ReplyDeleteCatherine and William really seem to be enjoying themselves on this visit, something I'm very happy to see. As for the fashion. What a wonderfully pretty dress the Duchess wore. The floral design looks a bit like lace, which she favors, and the yellow color looks amazing on her. Her standard issue striped top and jeans were also perfectly suited for the afternoon of rowing. All in all a great day.

ReplyDeleteWhat impresses me most about Kate on these tours is her unabridged enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment of whatever activity is thrown at her. She always shows genuine interest in whatever is being presented her, and is genuinely having fun! And I think this rubs off on William too.
ReplyDeleteLovely summery dress and the sunshine yellow of it is cheery. The material is beautiful and agree the seaming details make it interesting. The monsoon wedges are not the most beautiful, but she is smart to pair a neutral gray with the yellow, it doesn't compete with color and to walk on those cobblestone streets, very functional. Above all else, love, love the photos of William and Kate together, especially the one where they are looking at each other. Charlotte is right that the casual affairs generally lend themselves to the best photos of Kate and William's and an insight to their relationship! They really do look like they love each other and enjoy each other's company. Even when they are walking together with the children or when they arrive to an event, they seem to have an easy, natural banter between the two of them that is nice to see. They are a lovely, lovely couple and I am glad they have each other. cc
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow outfit :) And I just want to point out, the gold colour does not only reflect the German flag but also the colours of Baden, the state Heidelberg is part of. You can see the colours, gold and black, in the fabric of the medals Kate and William were given.

The white haired man standing next to William in the picture at the DKFZ is Winfried Kretschmann, the Ministerpräsident (premier) of Baden-Württemberg state, and his wife.

Kate Fan since you've responded politely to me, I will say what concerned me about your post.1. You told Dayle she should leave the blog - I don't feel that should be said by anyone - that is only for Charlotte to decide. It's her blog. It's not for you or me to tell her it's 'time to move on.'

Some blogs like OSS make an actual distinction - not reporting on privately worn clothes. These distinctions are blurry - even OSS covered Pippa's private wedding. But in this case - a royal tour - what Kate wears reflects on the country she represents.
3. This is a blog about Kate's life and style. We have never worried about where posters are from - the point is this blog is about talking about Kate's style. I've observed, having followed this blog from the start, is that most people do like some things and not others.
4. You spoke disrespectfully of other royal princesses -referring to them as 'littered all over Europe.' These women are as important as Kate. Many people here are only interested in Kate - and that's fine. The British monarchy is old - and English speaking, so any British royal draws a lot of attention. But those princesses aren't some sort of also rans. And we're free to follow more than one of them.
5. You asked the rhetorical question 'why follow a woman you don't agree with.' I'll answer that for me. Because she's a future queen. There is no requirement on this blog you be a Kate fan. A number of us are monarchists - we're interested as much with Kate in context as an individual.
6. You used some extremely harsh language, more so than I've seen about Kate or anyone else. I won't repeat it - you know what you wrote and say you're standing by it.
I don't know where you got this part about disruptive strangers. I never said it. Many people follow for years - then post for the first time. But one thing Charlotte has asked is that we all be respectful to each other. So if we're 'surprised' it's because attacks on other posters are against her rules. This is a blog about Kate.
All of us aren't going to like everyone's comments but when we agree to disagree, it's much easier to find common grounds. But even those who are always negative have their right to speak. And what I don't see here that is becoming exceptionally common elsewhere is people who don't support the monarchy. I have friends in that position and have to be polite to them. So even if fifty people don't like Kate's red gown and another fifty the blue coat - we are all still hoping and assuming she will one day be queen. Not everyone is. That I hope will put things more in perspective.
