William, Kate and Harry Pay Tribute to Diana at The White Garden

On the eve of the 20th anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales' tragic death, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry visited The Sunken Gardens at Kensington Palace, which has been transformed into The White Garden, dedicated to Diana and featuring a selection of the Princess' favourite flowers.

Unfortunately, it was a terribly rainy day. The royals arrived with umbrellas in hand.

It marks a return to engagements for the royal trio before their autumn schedule commences next week. William and Kate spent a week at Balmoral with the Royal family during the annual August break and Prince Harry has just returned from a three-week trip to Botswana with Meghan Markle. The pair were spotted catching a Heathrow Express train home earlier this week.

Kensington Palace described today's appearance as an opportunity for the princes to pay tribute to their mother's life and work. They shared this memorable photograph via Twitter.

A Palace spokesperson told The Telegraph: "They wanted to feel that their mother’s legacy will be celebrated in a positive way. Their objective was to put her character, both as a mother and as someone who was very committed to charity work, into the spotlight. This is reminding people of the work she did right up until her last days, and remembering the people who supported her. The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry very much want to show their gratitude to the public for their continued celebration of their mother's memory. It is a public acknowledgement of the special place the Princess holds in heart of the nation."

For anyone paying attention to television, newspapers and online media, you'll know, it has very much been the summer when attention focused on Diana was firmly renewed. Raking over scandals from the past with a fine tooth comb, figures from Diana's past "revealing" more information, salacious stories.. Of course, William and Harry would have anticipated such coverage and decided to take control of the narrative by appearing in two documentaries. Earlier this summer, William and Harry spoke about their mother and her inspiring work in the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. They also contributed to the BBC film 'Diana, 7 Days' focused on the 7 days after The Princess' death, and reminded people why the public had such affection for her. One imagines they have carefully considered her legacy and thought the milestone anniversary was the perfect time to speak so publicly, recalling childhood memories and reliving the days following her death. It was reportedly especially important to them to bring the focus back to her charity work - the reason why representatives from eight charities closest to her heart were invited to the Palace today.

Kensington Palace was Diana's home, and two decades later, William and Harry now call it their full-time residence. The White Garden is a beautiful tribute, planted with flowers and foliage inspired by memories of the late Princess' life, image and style.

Historic Royal Palaces revealed: "Planting included an elegant palette of tulips and scented narcisii through a carpet of 'forget me nots'. In the summer, pots of classic English white roses will surround the reflective pool in the centre of the garden and the planting will become more exuberant, with glowing ornamental grasses weaving through Cosmos daisies and billows of graceful Gaura." 12,000 bulbs were planted last Autumn for the display.

The choice of white echoes Diana's love for white and cream hues.

More from this excellent piece by the Evening Standard:

'The architect of this entire transformation around Kensington Palace, opening it up so beautifully, is Todd Longstaffe-Gowan, gardens adviser to the Historic Royal Palaces for 25 years. “The aim was very simply to re-marry the immediate surroundings of the palace with the park itself — to open up the gardens as they were in the 18th century,”
The whole approach to the palace is now open and light, spacious and welcoming, hospitable and even, to look at the pleasure on visitors’ faces, just fun. While seven or eight million people walk up and down the Broad Walk in Kensington Gardens each year, only 100,000 or so used to visit the Palace Gardens. Now it’s a million.
Longstaffe-Gowan was appointed in 2008 after an open competition. After several years of initially alarming destruction and construction — sweeping away 60 massive trees, countless shrubs, and much furnishing clutter to open up views; creating new gravelled walks, terraces, lozenge-shaped beds, and a wildflower meadow; surrounding the statue of Queen Victoria with a reflective pool; installing an amazing hornbeam “Wiggly Walk” up to the renovated Sunken Garden and its Cradle Walk — the gardens re-opened in March 2012. And, as they bed in, they are better year by year. The plan had been long nurtured, “but until the death of Princess Margaret [in 2002] we didn’t have the estate in hand”, as Longstaffe-Gowan tactfully puts it.
Back then, he didn’t like Kensington Palace that much. “There was a sentry box here, it was all very overgrown, it wasn’t at all friendly. These railings had originally been put up for Charles and Diana, he says, “put up to defend the palace from the paparazzi, to create a particular kind of curtilage, an enclosure, absolutely” — and it was in their time too that the gate, previously called the Crowther Gate, standing behind the palace, was installed.
“It obviously has an importance in terms of the Diana story, so when we were considering our plans we never considered removing it. What we wanted to do there was kind of keep it as an object in itself and take the park railings right up to it without any fanfare. Some people found that discourteous, feeling there should be a greater statement, but it’s only the gates that are associated with her, as a sort of secondary relic, so I didn’t feel that the railings and ancillary stuff had anything to do with it at all.” So now the golden gates, the former epicentre of Diana-grief, look merely ornamental, since they are bordered now by an unpretentious five-barred field fence, no more than waist-high, no barrier at all.'

William, Kate and Harry were given a tour by the Head Gardener, along with a gardener who knew the Princess from her frequent visits there.

The design and planning of this special garden was explained.

People reports:

'William, 35, recalled that he remembered “seeing the pigeons and squirrels,” adding, “We used to come here a lot.” Noting that he and Harry used to feed the fish in the garden’s pond, William said, “there never used to be this many in here”  — before being told some of the koi carp are so old that they are the same ones from his youth.
“It does look really different,” Kate, in a floral-patterned Prada dress and L.K. Bennett heels, observed. “I love the semi-wildness.”
Prince Harry told staff that when the summer opening of the White Garden wraps, he would like to keep some of the plants and flowers alive, transporting them to his own Kensington Palace plot to tend them. Flowers include the William and Catherine roses, Forget-Me-Nots, and white roses chosen particularly for their perfume. “[William and Harry] were very interested in hearing about the flowers,” says Harkin. “Prince Harry is quite green-fingered himself and asked lots of questions about what we were growing. We were talking about the importance of having plants rather than paving over.”

Afterwards, they met with representatives from organisations supported by Diana during the final years of her life.

These include Great Ormond Street Hospital; the National Aids Trust; The Leprosy Mission; Royal Marsden Hospital; English National Ballet, Child Bereavement UK, Landmine Survivors Network and Centrepoint. It was an opportunity to reflect on the significant achievements of the Princess, and the legacy of her work which continues to resonate with so many today.

Among them was Dr Ken Rutherford, who accompanied her on her final charity trip to raise awareness of landmines in Bosnia. The Telegraph reported:

Dr Rutherford, a landmine survivor who now works in the department for political science at James Madison University, US, said: “For me, it is an honour to be part of recognising someone who was so charismatic she actually changed the world.
“And now her sons, in such an uncomplicated way, are connecting the dots of her life and continuing her legacy. When I met Prince Harry in April, his first question was: did my mother make a difference? For landmine survivors, she changed everything.”

Princess Diana was determined to make a difference in the lives of landmine survivors around the world. Her public commitment to ban landmines, and the attention she brought to this international issue, was an important catalyst in the adoption of the International Mine Ban Treaty in 1997. Princess Diana accompanied Landmine Survivors Network Co-founders Ken Rutherford and Jerry White to Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina, for the opening of the first Network office. “Many people heard of LSN only because of Diana's involvement,” White says. “She transformed landmines from a security issue into a humanitarian issue.” Diana’s visit had an enormous impact. “You could just feel something big was happening. Everyone was so excited,” said Plamenko Priganica, Director of LSN Bosnia-Herzegovina. “Diana’s visit to Bosnia made Bosnians proud just to be Bosnians. Speaking on the issue Diana said "The world is too little aware of the waste of life, limb and land which anti-personnel landmines are causing among some of the poorest people on earth."

They met with the founders, former & current patients of the Osteopathic Centre for Children. Diana was learning more about this charity and was due to meet them in early September 1997 to help launch their Sweet Pea appeal.

Diana's work in several of these causes is very much remembered today, particularly her role as patron of the National Aids Trust, which champions the rights of people living with HIV and campaigns for change. In the mid -80s, HIV/Aids terrified the world because of misinformation and a lack of understanding. In 1987, Princess Diana opened the UK's first purpose built HIV/Aids unit that exclusively cared for patients infected with the virus, at London Middlesex Hospital. In front of the world's media, Diana shook the hand of a man suffering with the illness. She did so without gloves, publicly challenging the notion that HIV/Aids was passed from person to person by touch. She showed in a single gesture that this was a condition needing compassion and understanding, not fear and ignorance. During a speech she famously said "HIV does not make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands and give them a hug: Heaven knows they need it." In 2001, President Bill Clinton delivered Diana's lecture on Aids. Gavin Hart from the Trust described her contribution to Aids awareness as "Immeasurable". "In our opinion she was the foremost ambassador for Aids Awareness on the planet and no one can fill her shoes in terms of the work she did".

Peter Waddup, the new National Director of The Leprosy Mission England and Wales has described the organisation as Diana's "forgotten charity". He feels recent documentaries and specials have neglected to include the cause which was deeply important to her. "Princess Diana made huge strides in tackling the prejudice surrounding leprosy but tragically, since her death, leprosy has returned to being the ‘forgotten disease’." Leprosy was a disease that had a huge impact on Diana and she visited a number of Leprosy Mission hospitals, famously making the headlines by touching people affected by the disease, going against the advice of her Royal officials. After visiting the Sitanala Leprosy Hospital in Indonesia in November 1989 the headline in The Sun the next morning was Di to Shake Hands with Leper, Don’t Do It, Di. She spoke passionately at a global anti-leprosy conference in London in 1996 where she explained her actions. “It’s always been my concern to touch people with leprosy, trying to show in a simple action that they are not reviled nor are we repulsed,” she said.

Whilst talking to the Director of the English National Ballet, Kate revealed Charlotte is learning to dance.

This week, well-wishers have left floral tributes once again. William and Harry looked at the flowers and messages before concluding the engagement.

William and Harry lay flowers from members of the waiting crowd.

Rebecca English posted this video.

William and Harry wanted to say thank you to those who made the journey.

People reported "Eight-year-old Gracie Oxby was holding a bouquet of flowers outside the golden gates of Kensington Palace when the 32-year-old approached. “Harry came straight over to Gracie and she said, ‘Could you put the flowers down for me?’ ” says her mom, Rhian. “He said, ‘By all means. Where do you want them?’ He was very friendly and funny and very nice.” Adds Gracie: “It meant a lot to meet a Prince. It was really exciting."

William and Harry will mark the anniversary privately tomorrow. Images from William and Harry's impromptu appearance outside KP dominate tomorrow's papers.

"Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you" - Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Duchess wore the Prada Poppy Print Silk Dress today (with thanks to HeavenQRF). The choice of poppy print was very appropriate today. Poppies have long been used as a symbol of peace in death, consolation for a loss and remembering the fallen.

The £1,420 piece is crafted from lightweight silk. "Smocking at the waist lends this piece a fit and flare silhouette, while the pussybow detailing finishes things on an undeniably feminine note." Made in Italy, it features a self-tie collar, buttoned cuffs, elasticated waistband.

The official colour is "Smeraldo". It's available at My Theresa and Matches Fashion.

Looking ahead, Kensington Palace revealed plans for William, Kate and Harry's Autumn schedule yesterday. "The coming months will see The Duke & Duchess & Prince Harry undertake a busy autumn programme as TRH return to royal duties & engagements. Over the course of the autumn, TRH will visit a number of communities, charities and organisations across the UK. TRH will continue to highlight the important work of their patronages, & collectively focus on supporting issues surrounding mental health. A particular focus will be the next phase of the Heads Together campaign, with more activity starting in this space in October". They added Kate will continue to focus on addiction, family breakdown and the importance of early intervention. Rebecca English reports their move to London is now complete.

In terms of engagements, the Duchess will will visit Hornsey Road Children's Centre in London on Monday 4th September. The centre, which provides families with valuable support, will host a discussion about perinatal mental health services which are delivered by the charity Family Action, of which Her Majesty The Queen is patron. On Tuesday, the royal trio have a joint engagement. Details are being kept under wraps for the moment. And on Thursday, 7 September, Prince George starts school at Thomas's Battersea. He will be accompanied by William and Kate. One photographer will be present, so we can expect to see several photographs released. It was also revealed William and Kate will undertake a tour in November. I expect it's quite likely it will be another Brexit tour focused on relations with Europe. At The Queen's Garden Party in May, William revealed "Hopefully we are going to Norway very soon.". A tour of Scandinavia looks a likely possibility. We'll hear more details in due course. I look forward to seeing a busier schedule for the royals and the continuation of Heads Together in particular.

  1. I never knew the White Garden was so beautiful. Wow!

  2. This garden is a beautiful tribute to the beloved woman, Princess Diana, who inspired my mother to give me the same name after her. I am happy to see William, Kate and Harry are following her footsteps in charity and to raise awareness of important topics.

And a beautiful name it is.

One touching story I remember on names is Diana meeting a young girl named Camilla at the height of the worst of the break-up. 'It's a beautiful name," she said. I thought that was very sweet of her.

    2. Diana. I am sure that William and Harry would be very touched to know that you were named after their mother.

What a nice event. And a good balance. Moving but not unbearable, if that makes sense. And a wonderful touch to have some of Dianas charities involved! Great focus to have around this time! I hope tomorrow isn't too hard for William and Harry! But it's wonderful they have eachother, and now Kate and the kids!

On Kate's look. It's perfectly suitable and pretty. Quite 70s/80s in the look, as is in style. It was a good floral choice for the event. I can't say it's a favourite of mine, but there is nothing wrong with it.

I look very much forward to the coming weeks and months and all that we have before us :)

    1. I did say in a previous comment that I think the dress is pretty, but I also did think to myself that it does look a bit dated.

I think it looks dated as well. But on-trend dated if that makes sense. As in, 70s revival/80s-ish which is very on-trend right now. Something can be trendy and dated at the same time :P I like some of those looks, this dress doesn't look very pretty to me but she still looks pretty in it and there's nothing wrong with it so it's a perfectly suitable choice.

    3. It is definitely on-trend and one of many Kate has worn similar to that. I think the poppies were definitely a "Kate thing" and one poster said the dress in other respects also matched one that Diana wore and to a garden tour or memorial if I remember correctly, so it wouldn't surprise me if Kate matched it up that way. The poster didn't list a link but hopefully will as I would love to find out if Kate once again did the archive family dressing thing.

    4. I completely agree with Rebecca. That fashion is really coming back right now. The gardens are beautiful, and I'm excited that William and Harry have the chance to mourn their mother whilst visiting such a peaceful and special place. They really have embraced Diana's memory in a lovely way.

    5. After a 2nd look & Studying The Dress, I'm quite struck by it! By itself, it's not knocking my socks off, but once I studied it I was once again touched by the amount of thought Kate gives to her sartorial choices! The dress just flows with the green & white of it giving it a very wispy Garden like feel. Add to that the Poppies & how understated it is (not to detract from The Garden/ she almost blends in & compliments it) to me it's just such an amazing choice for The Day & The Opening of The White Garden! Such a respectful choice for her 1st Time Officially Grieving Publicly for her Mother in Law along with William & Harry! Kate is truly lovely inside & out! :)

  4. Otherwise I am not a fan of the dress. This is just like my grandma took it out from her own wardrobe. But she might wanted to be that simple to not steal the show from the tribute of her late mother-in-law by her outfit.

    1. She could have worn a dress she's worn previously, instead of buying a new dress and making the focus be her new clothes instead of the event.

    2. I think the focus is always on her clothes whether new or a repeat. I never see new clothes as a negative though. For me, it means she finds the event worthy of making the effort to look her very best. It's a sign of respect imo, not a symbol of excess and egoism.

I like new clothes too and think they are important for attention - and show respect for the individuality of the occasion - I just don't always like the choices. This one works for the event.

    4. Me personally, would not have thought less of Kate if she had had repeated a dress. On the contrary.

  5. Kate's dress is very pretty, but my attention was drawn today to the shoes worn by the Princes. Ordinary shoes, of course, but they've always been my favorite style on men. I need to buy some for my husband.

I remember when in London in '91 and '93, the KP gardens were very enclosed and overgrown. Very private. I remember thinking that I wasn't sure we were even allowed to be there. I was surprised when I was there again in 2015, to see it was so open, so changed. Very beautiful, but I did like the "secret garden" characteristics of the garden back then.

  6. OK, I'm not ashamed to admit that my first sight of Kate today wearing a poppy-covered dress in memory of the mother-in-law she never had the chance to meet has just made me blub! What a simply perfect choice for the occasion. Bravo!

Such a shame about the weather. I visited the Diana exhibition and the White Garden just a week ago and it is utterly beautiful - the tulips from the spring photos are long gone, but it is now overflowing with wispy white cosmos. The arches of foliage around the four sides are now fully grown too, so you walk through this green tunnel to the various viewpoints (unfortunately, you can't go into the garden, you can only observe from a path around the edges). I am sure the princess would have adored it, and I think it might be right up Kate's street too.

I have found myself thinking how different William's life would be, had he chosen an attention seeking/high maintenance wife? My appreciation for Kate & admiration for her only continues to grow! (truly/with the values Diana instilled in her sons.... I don't think they could have married anyone other than a compassionate supportive & giving woman!)

  9. The Duchess looks lovely. Her dress is very appropriate for the occasion. Too bad about the rain. I feel. A lot has been made about this 20 year anniversary of Diana's death. So much press and tv. I think this simple " event" is a effective way for William and Harry to publically mark it.

  10. I've been looking forward to seeing images of the White Garden! It's so pretty and airy and whimsical. I'm glad William and Harry were able to have this event, as well as the documentaries, to honor Diana's memory. Wouldn't it have been a surprise if Charles had shown up today!

When do William and Kate officially move back to London? I really hope that their schedule actually does increase. I think it's definitely time. I have a feeling the tour will be of Scandinavia. It's so interesting to see them moving about Europe in an effort to handle soft diplomacy matters of Brexit.

It's good to see Kate experimenting with bolder prints. I like the mint green color and the floral air, but the pattern makes my eyes hurt a little. She seems to be growing out her hair again. I wouldn't mind it in that shorter style for a bit. She wore it well.

  13. The dress color I love. The dress itself, meh. I think it looks better on her than the model, but it's still fussy and matronly. But, I do think it's good she wore a new dress. I think there could be backlash if she wore a repeat: "At an event honoring your late (world beloved) mother in law and you can't even be bothered to get a new dress?" I doubt anyone close to Diana(or even Diana) would care but still, I could see potential backlash.

I am excited to see an increase in royal duties. I am assuming it will be a marked increase as they have point blank said they are now 'full time royals'. If their version of 'full time' is keeping a pace that they have kept previously, then there will be huge problems with the monarchy and it's future.

    1. Hi Kate, I have to respectfully disagree, I don't think anyone would mind if Kate re-wore a dress for this event. This event in particular was not about her but about Diana and her sons, so imo wearing a new dress that cost over $2000 was not the right step to take. But I do agree that the collar of this dress is very fussy and matronly.

    2. I don't think Kate should have been there at all. She's odd man out, she didn't know Diana, and she doesn't work with Diana's causes. This should have been William and Harry's event; just the two of them. I'm glad that she didn't accompany them when they did the walkabout.

You'll probably not see me say this again, but I think this is one she should have skipped.

I get what you mean bluhare, but if I were William I would want her with me. She, in my mind, was not there as a royal so much as a supporting wife.

    4. I think William really wanted Kate there for part of it like she was because he wants her close to his mum. Since they never met and never will this side of heaven it is a poignant way to get them together so to speak. He has given her his mum's ring, earrings, bracelet, tiara so this makes sense to me with all that too. And Kensington Palace was the boys' and Diana's home and it is Kate's home now too. How could he not invite Kate to that "home" garden today. Kate seems fond of "the language of flowers". And, it was their "final" big farewell to their mum. How would Kate have that opportunity again? I was actually kind of surprised and disappointed that Meghan wasn't with Harry for this today. It was a biggie, a 20th anniversary. And, their "final" big farewell to their mum. It wasn't an "official" enough event to have exempted Meghan. Maybe the relationship isn't as far along as we think. How many times did he take Chelsea to Africa (7?) and wasn't she Harry's guest for the concert for Diana? I found Meghan's absence perplexing.

I didn't find it wierd at all, surfer girl. It was one of the most high profile events in their calendar. Not the traditional kind of high profile, but the kind with sure magazine frontpage place (barring big disasters)and in my mind it would have been very, very odd to have her their. I am very happy though to hear the rumours that she IS with him in london (probably hiding in the cottage during the engagement) as it's wonderful to have the support of a loved one at times like this.

    6. I can't imagine what would be said if Kate had not participated in the garden visit and the meeting with the charities. I found the princes' placing flowers from the crowd quite poignant. The royal family did that outside Buckingham Palace when they returned to London from Scotland before Diana's funeral. It must have been a little hard for William and Harry to repeat it, but they were quite graceful with the crowd and careful with the flowers.

As for the dress, I suppose one's viewpoint depends on one's age. To me, that style looks pretty and youthful. :-) I do think the skirt could be a bit shorter. The symbolism of the poppies is sweet. And Kate would have blended into the garden and become invisible if she had worn a dull color.

      Delete
    7. Totally OK if you don't agree with me, but I think she was out of place. They were there to honor their mother's memory and Kate has nothing to do with that and she supports William the rest of the hours in the year. I don't know why Kate needs any opportunity to say goodbye to Diana. She didn't know her.

    8. Surfer girl, I agree with you with him wanting Kate there BUT it is important to note that although she was given the ring, the sapphire earrings, and pearl earrings, bracelet, and most importantly - the tiara, are not Diana's. These were all given as gifts (minus the tiara) to her while she was HRH the Princess of Wales and representing the Royal Family, so those really belong to the Crown, Her Majesty. I'm trying to find a link but basically when someone gifts a Royal a piece of art, clothes, or jewellery, said royal doesn't really own the piece, and when they pass away the Monarch decides whether or not they will stay with the deceased's children, or will pass to the Royal Collection – something we don't have a way to know unless KP clarifies the ownership. The tiara was never hers either, but instead a lifetime loan by the Queen. It is important because it's often mistaken as William giving her her mother's things, when in reality she could be very well loaning them from the Queen, as she does with the Cambridge Lover's Knot.

Meghan's absence shouldn't surprise anyone, she is just a girlfriend and honestly, Imo they are going too fast. Also, he didn't really take Chelsy to Africa, she lived there. And as for the Concert for Diana, they invited all friends and family, so her presence was obvious.

I have to say I found nothing strange in Kate being there - she's William's wife. I did know and love my mum-in-law but if I hadn't I still would have found it odd to be excluded because I would have known her from what my hubby told me. She was there to support her husband and to thank the people who had worked so hard on the garden and to meet those who had worked with Diana.

In the same way I'm not surprised Meghan was absent - Kate's there to stay - we don't know about Meghan - Harry was with Chelsy longer - but if she had been at such serious events before marriage - all the photos would later have shown her and discussed the break-up - it would be a distraction - I think royals are wise to wait until relationships are certain.

      Delete
    12. That's true. Actually, I didn't think about what a distraction and media sensation Meghan being there would have been. Quite different from a huge stadium crowd at a concert. I was picturing her being there and having it low key like it was.

    13. Charlotte, France. I had always thought that the sapphire ring, earrings and bracelet were personal property of the boys bequeathed to them by Diana in her will. They were hers to do that with as those items were not state gifts but personal ones or jewelry she bought herself.
I did understand that the tiara is on loan from the Queen but meant it has been designated for Kate to wear I suppose in memory of Diana, probably upon the request of William. Just guessing on that.
I know that Chelsea is from Zimbabwe but I think Harry took Chelsea on a slow cruise down a river in Botswana after he had served on the front in Afghanistan. I think that was in 2008. I had read he had taken her to other parts of Africa also but can't find that reference now. After his breakup with Chelsea he also took another woman to Botswana for vacation. I think her name was Natasha or Natalia and I think she was a journalist or television broadcast person. Harry does take his ladies to his favorite place for sure. :)

    15. you are so funny bluhare. :) I laughed at your comment. (sorry. I know it is a solemn event.) you are right though. why would Kate say goodbye to Diana if she never knew her. I had to think twice about that. And this is what I think I was trying to say before. I think William wanted her there because she has been his confidante and true support for him regarding things about Diana since 2001. (Kate said that she and William became very close friends right away.) Closer to him about those things than any one on earth probably and that includes being there for him during Fayed's accusations, the inquests, was Diana pregnant, etc. and that news circus and everything pertaining to Diana subsequent to all of that. So, in a way, she does know Diana
and has earned the right to be there in William's eyes anyway. Does that make sense?
I get it about Meghan not being there though, I guess. I was more than halfway expecting her to be there though after she and Harry had just spent 21 days secluded away in Africa. It seemed they had limited media coverage there at the garden or not?

    18. Hey again! I'm in Paris :)

The sapphire ring is personal property, because it was gifted by Charles and before she became royal. The pearl earrings and bracelet we saw Kate wear recently were gifted by Collingwood to her after the marriage, when she was Princess of Wales, and it wasn't a gift to 'Diana' but to HRH Princess Diana, so there's the difference. Much like how if Kate receives a brooch from William or her sister it's a personal gift and she decides to whom it passes after she dies, but the polar bear brooches they were gifted in Canada in 2011 are not theirs because they received them in their role of Duke and Duchess.

Yes, on the tiara guessing is all we can do, but I did clarify because I've seen some people taking the 'Diana's tiara' sentiment too literally hahaha.

You're right, he did take her on a cruise (I had forgotten that), yeah I also think it's his favourite place, but who can blame him? No one bothers him there.

      Delete
    19. I forgot to add, those sapphire earrings of Kate that seem to be a reduced version of ones Diana owned, were also belongings of the Crown, since they were an official gift from Saudi Arabia (if I'm not mistaken). But it wouldn't surprise me if Her Majesty let the children have the jewels, after all, they aren't that huge (like Camilla's three necklaces) or that precious.

      Delete
    20. Thanks Charlotte from Paris. :)

It would be so nice to have someone do a survey of all their jewelry, private and crown owned. Some books have been done but nothing encompassing all of it. Wouldn't that be a fun book. :)

'William and Kate are Fighting, Kate Doesn't Support William in his Grief, The Marriage is on the Rocks, Kate is Jealous of Diana, William Thinks Diana was Better than Kate....' I think Kate doing the garden part and the patronages was good. But I think it was completely appropriate that William and Harry did the walk about alone. They are the only ones that remember before, it is appropriate that they do it again together.

  17. Eve from Germany30 August 2017 at 16:39

This dress reminds me terribly of those Diana´s grandmother Ruth, Lady Fermoy, wore back in the late 70ies,early 80ies... I didn´t like them then (not even on Grandmothers) and I don´t like them now.. especially on a woman in her mid-thirties! I like the poppies´significance, if that was why she chose it, it´s a really nice and thoughtful gesture....
The gardens look very, very beautiful, such a shame that the weather was so rainy today....

I read an interesting article in the Washington Post today, about how Diana isn´t the icon to the young(er) generation as she was and still is to the 50somethings.... I guess each generation has its own icon, for very specific reasons very important during that specific time. JFK (how often can you say three letters and literally everybody immediately knows whom you are talking about?) was THE icon for my parents whereas for my generation we saw his flaws as well as what made him an icon. Diana was THE icon for my generation and my daughter sees her achievements, but sees her flaws as well, so she watches the crowds that gathered 20 years ago with some amazement, wondering what on earth got into those people back then... I wonder if and when my daughter´s generation will "choose" their "icon" - or whether they will ever have one....
I guess that´s why William and Harry contributed to those documentaries, because they realized that Diana´s legacy kind of "disappears" with the generation that made her so famous. Whether it will work? We´ll see. Personally, I´m not so sure. Different times - different icons....
I can recommend BBC´s "Diana, 7 days", though. It turned out to be as balanced as the previews suggested and it was very poignant. On the day of her funeral I was hospitalized because I was pregnant and nearly lost my daughter on that day. Thankfully, that didn´t happen, but I remember that I was brought to a room and the other patient was watching the funeral which I somehow DIDN´T want to watch.. I wanted to remember Diana "alive and kicking" - not in a coffin. I wanted to remember her being out and about on missions against landmines - not crushed in a terrible and stupid car accident. Although I do not see Diana as a "saint" at all and see many of her actions in a critical way, to this day I have problems reading the part of her death and funeral in magazines or the biographies I have. "Whom the gods love die young".... Still, to this day, and even now, reading "DianaDaybyDay"´s twitter story about her last weeks (again, VERY recommendable!!), I´m catching myself shaking my head and thinking "WHY, my goodness, WHY did she do that/WHY did she go to Paris/WHY did she agree to go to the Ritz and then back to Dodi´s appartment, knowing how many Paparazzi were waiting outside!WHY didn´t she have her own bodyguard who was trained like a Royal bodyguard?" Such a tragic, senseless loss.... My thoughts and prayers are with her two boys and their family tomorrow... R.I.P, Diana.

Very interesting remarks Eve - I remember too thinking those who the Gods bless most die young, at the time of the Millennium with all the celebrations. JFK Jr. for whom there were so many hopes died - also in an unnecessary and somewhat hubristic accident (he didn't want to take a professional pilot along so things would be more private) just two years after Diana - the young Agnelli heir for whom there were hopes died of cancer right about that time - and Jackie and Audrey - two great public figures had died in the 90's both too young - the latter of course, also in the midst of her charitable works. It almost seemed later to me that we were being set up for the difficult decade that was to come, starting with 9-11 - just when we thought the Troubles were over and we could finally worry a little less about terror attacks.

There are a lot of 'if onlys' with Diana's death but there always are when looking at retrospect at a tragedy. I think Diana was going along with Dodi who used poor judgement.
If things had been handled less antagonistically by the royal family, I believe she might have still had royal protection which could have stepped in. Just looking at how the Danish royal family handled divorce (although they have their own problems with Henrik) making Alexandra a duchess, seems a much more sensible approach than the way Diana was left to drift - it comes as so many things have in my opinion, by the queen not stepping in until too late and not taking the best impartial advice. I've felt that way about the current announcement of William and Kate's increased role - it's good but about two years later than it ought to have been.

I' glad your daughter's birth worked out happily, thank goodness. We had TV then and I did watch the funeral obsessively and all the shows - but Leo could hardly bear it.

The gardens are incredibly beautiful - I hope they continue to grow and flourish.

Wish they had arranged to go indoors with members of Diana's charities - so a proper photo could be taken instead of huddling under umbrellas - perhaps that will still happen. Quite honestly, it would have been better to make that meeting a public event with speakers.

The statements given are a huge tribute to Diana and the work Diana did - and I notice how in the leprosy statement it mentions that the disease has slipped under the radar again.

It is so easy to get lost with Diana with her personal life and the issues of the accident and forget her work - and before the separation - how many charities for the young, the old, the obscure charities, how many visits she paid. She was truly a remarkable worker - even before she reached iconic status, just looking at her interacting on her visits was a pleasure. She had a true touch with people. No, she wasn't a perfect human being - who amongst us is, but she did her best in a most trying situation. It's a pity the royal family could never recognise her accomplishments - there seems some half-hearted efforts now with the display of her desk - but they owe her a big thank-you for pulling in a generation that could prove crucial to the royal family's survival.

I wouldn't expect her to be an icon to the young - what has worried me is that there is no royal icon for the young - Harry to a small extent, but he and William have wasted so much time. The idea that the young will become interested in Charles and Camilla - people their grandparents' age (or honestly, in style and manner, their great-grandparents' age -
Camilla looks and acts as old as the queen) is ridiculous. The monarchy has slipped into an old fogies state.
William and kate have squandered a lot of the attention they got at the time of their marriage by not plunging in. Youthful attention has drifted away at a very fragile time for the family. I'm hopeful we will see a big increase in engagements - (but we've seen these announcements before.) It's going to take a huge push to rebuild youthful attention and it can't just be focused on a couple of causes, however worthy those are - it needs to be widespread.
I have very mixed feelings about Mwghan - I suspect a lot of publicity is coming directly from her - and that makes me uneasy - on the other hand she might have the drive and connection to build up enthusiasm again - it's so hard to say. Kate just seems to lack that initiative - but the interest shown on the Polish/German tour shows it may still be possible to build up public attention. Diana gets criticised for using the press but she knew what William and Harry seem to want to avoid - how necessary press attention is.

As for the programmes - I think it's completely right for William and Harry to take control of their mother's legacy - theirs is an emotional response but it is also a response to those who have used Diana for their own purposes.
As for Kate's dress - I don't love it but it works for the garden, and I like the suggestion made above about the poppy symbolism - so I'll take that as my guide -but I do hope in the coming visit - William and Kate remember the importance of royal glamour.

    1. Julia you say Kate seems to lack initiative but wasn't it Kate came up with the Heads Together initiative. Even Will and Harry give her credit for the idea in one of the recent mental health heads together video when they werexpressinf their feelings about losing their mother. I think the press deliberately does not mention anything about it.

    2. Well stated. The squandered time is irreparable, however, if this "full time royal" thing shows more commitment, perhaps the youth of the generation will take hold. I like to think of myself as a youth, but I guess I'm middle aged now at 36. So I can't really judge the interest in the BRF from the young millennials. Helen in Indiana

    3. "remember the importance of royal glamour". A BIG YES to that, Julia. Diana had a very special and powerful charisma obviously and thankfully, but how much of an effect did always looking just right in a va va boom Iconic way have on the publics' reaction to her, acceptance of her and the staying power of her memory and legacy. There are thousands of photos of Diana looking amazing. Diana is on record as saying that she definitely made an effort to dress the part, AND she had creative fun with it as reported by those who worked with her. And it showed. It was an extension of her. I would like to see Kate address her wardrobe with that savoure faire, fun and joy. And, with the expert-type bespoke and styling help Diana had. That is a large part of her job. Every paper, magazine etc., even business magazines comment of what the royal ladies wear. I still maintain that William (meaning only good) "took the mickey out of her" fashionwise at the time of the Royal Barge celebration. Maybe he thought she was getting too into it. And we haven't seen "the pre-wedding and early marriage" Kate" since then.
      That's just an opinion.

    5. Julia, can you elaborate on your thoughts about Meghan? From my perspective (in the US), she's kept a very low profile and I don't see her going out of her way to promote herself. I didn't know of her before she started dating Harry but she seems genuine to me. I find her likable and I think she and Harry, as a team, could bring a great energy to the monarchy that is lacking with W&Ks more reserved style.

      Delete
    6. Julia from Leominster31 August 2017 at 16:40

Taryn - Meghan's been on the cover of Hello! almost two weeks in a row - she can't help that, but there have been a lot of release of childhood photos - the sort of thing not expected until an engagement is announced. It seems like a press campaign on someone's part. Every time there is a tamping down of attention which I'm sure is what the royal family wants - (Harry's been through a couple of long relationships that broke up) there is a leak and more photos.

In fairness to Meghan, Kate used the press too - and I didn't think that was a completely good thing. Things worked out in the end, but I thought at the time William was forced back to her sooner than might have happened without the attention - and long term, since theirs was a youthful relationship, a little more free time might have saved him from feeling he missed something later. (I always thought that Diana would have loved Kate in the end, but she would have encouraged William to explore his freedom a bit more.)

There are a lot of things I like about Meghan, but if she does marry Harry, she's in for a rough ride (I think Kate was hugely startled by expectations as well after the glow of those first months.) The sort of outspoken freedom she's used to isn't going to happen and she is seen as pushy and not all that popular. So I would hope they take time to make certain their relationship will hold during cold dismal days in London - not just the excitement of romantic holidays and the thrill of a long-distance romance.

Anon 20:26 - it was said Head's Together was Kate's idea but in perception it has been linked more to the trio than her individually. It's an extremely worthy cause but at the same time there have been huge gaps in engagements concerning it which worries me. Unfortunately, Kate's biggest individual initiative - the Huffington Post - got very little attention. Her speeches are much improved but she hasn't really plunged in. (On that thought, I haven't noticed comments from Sarah from Maryland of late - who started that important blog and then ran aground on technical issues. Perhaps, I've just missed her postings.)

So I don't know - I just don't think people - especially the young who I would normally expect to be interested in a young royal woman (perhaps thinking back to how we felt in the Diana days) are really associating Kate with work too much at this point - but hopefully that will soon change.

In the meantime, I feel caught in the paradox of one potential royal lady moving too fast and the other moving too slow.

    8. I would say that the younger generation doesn't have a lot of interest because they are 'boring'. Aka, there are no true scandals. They got married, are seemingly happy, and had some kids. William went to work and Kate raised the kids. Harry sowed his 'wild oats' and now is settled down and is starting to develop a career. The most scandalous thing is his relationship with Meghan and that isn't even scandalous. They are boring compared to the Khardasians(spelling?) and Jay Z/Beyoncé.

In a world of instant gratification, there's nothing really instant about them. The kids I know liked the royal wedding because it was princessy and beautiful. But Kate(or Sophie/Anne/etc) don't strut around in tiaras so the flash for attention isn't there. I know that's a huge generalization of an entire generation. Thinking about the celebrities that favorites who are also 'boring', they resonate with the younger generation because they embrace the pretty, the fashion AND they champion social causes that speak to people under 30. AND they all use social media. Mental health and bullying and suicide would resonate with the younger kids but it needs to be ongoing, not just a one and done.

Not to ramble, but I would also say it needs some shock value. Part of what people loved about Diana is she didn't play it safe all the time. She connected with the marginalized people and everyone wants to root for an underdog. And because it was slightly scandalous, it sold papers, got attention and changed the map of society. Okay, enough of my soapbox ramblings. Back to Harry Potter.

I know Harry has strongly advocated for HIV testing and been involved in anti-landmine work. William is now President of the Royal Marsden Hospital, patron of Child Bereavement UK, and patron of Centrepoint. So sweet that William and Harry went over to personally thank those who had shown up to remember their mum.

Princess Charlotte is taking dancing lessons. Sweet.
It helps with poise, learning to follow instruction, self-discipline and it is lots of fun. She takes after Diana in loving dancing. Don't know that Carole or the Queen had those as cherished hobbies. Maybe they did.
I can just picture William and Uncle Harry sitting there now watching Charlotte doing a mini swan lake in her little tutu. They would HAVE to look interested, lol. Charlotte would know. That would be a memorable photo of the boys for sure. :)

I took ballet lessons for a bit more than 10 years when I was a kid and it was a great experience! At first, I had started because of the 'ballerina dream' (the tutus, pirouettes, recitals,..). But it turned out to teach me much more : posture, elegance, discipline how to cope with being nervous about performances, I got really flexible, which was heplful for gym classes,...
And of course there was the part about the gorgeous costumes, stage makeup, tons of hairspray to make your bun hold, lights at recitals, ... ;)
I think it will be a great experiece for Charlotte. And I think I saw in a documentary that Diana wanted to become a ballet dancer when she was a teenaher but it did not work out?

@Sonja: Diana indeed wanted to become a ballet dancer, but sadly, she grew too tall. Let´s see how Charlotte enjoys it, but I fear with her two very tall parents, she might end up facing the same problem as her late grandmother. Still, I agree with you, it can teach you a lot of very useful things, especially for a future Princess....

    3. Yes. I think one of the documentaries said she wanted to take ballet lessons but for some reason couldn't. So her brother said she took up tap dance and used to dance and dance in her tap shoes in the foyer of Althorp. I remember my childhood dance recitals now with the satin costumes, the tights and stage makeup. I had not thought of those in years. Thanks Sonja. :)

I am sharing this link because everyone loved the lavender and green for Kate. This fabric is silk and about 14.00 or something per yard, very reasonable for silk, if you couldn't afford a full dress a blouse or skirt would be beautiful, most seamstresses already stock lining, so all you have to do is pick a pattern, order fabric, get it made and you too will have a one of a kind!!! Enjoy friends!!

    2. Yes I think she must be a romantic at heart, she wears very soft fitting romantic pieces, not hard or edgy, which I have no problem with edgy, I just think that famous designers are totally over doing edgy, and most designers will only use lace to achieve romance, I like that Kate's pieces are very romantic without always being lace, I do love lace, I just think it takes talent to create gracefulness in clothing, and although Kate doesn't create the clothing, she somehow always comes across as and I will coin this phrase for her "A Refined Romantic"

I don't know if I am overly emotional today or have been watching too many Diana documentaries, but the very first picture of PW and PH seemed like a heavy one. Almost as if they were thinking "Okay, emotions aside, here we go". A very serious look. Them looking at the flowers in front of KP gates reminded me of them when their mother passed. Tragic. Well, I hope this brings some healing to their hearts. She is still here on Earth...in THEM.

  38. Also very sweet is the fact that Harry requested some of the flowers and plants from Diana's memorial garden to plant in his garden. How sweet is that? If he needs any help keeping the botanicals thriving he has the gardeners right there. He could keep some of them going perpetually it seems.

As for Kate's look, I can see the respect and reasons behind her choice of dress. It's pretty and all, just not sure it's a favorite of mine. I'm still hoping with her hair she tries a side part! And I cannot help but focus on the images of W&H laying flowers on behalf of members of the public and compare it to the day the RF returned to London prior to the funeral. What a beautiful day and way to remember their mom. The gardens are stunning and serene. I loved that they took time to greet people and lay flowers at the gates. Such a sad reminder of the days that followed their mother's death. I'm sure many have mentioned, but Diana would have been so proud of her boys. They are doing amazing work and will continue in the months and years ahead. Thinking of them as tomorrow approaches. Still hard to believe it's been 20 years.

Patricia I - the saddest part about the floods on South Asia in relation to the royal family is that the Queen expressed condolences for the one in the US while not saying a word about the ones causing over 1000 deaths in countries belonging to the Commonwealth!

1200 people were displaced in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. In the meantime a genocide against Ryohinga Muslims is taking shape in Burma. Not a peep from the British Royal Family. 45. Now that the 20th anniversary has passed, I hope that the Princes can move forward in their own right, out of Diana's shadow. They have done a lot of work--albeit part-time--for youth-centered charities and have connected well with young people on a small group level. They have addressed issues like homelessness, mental and physical health, PTSD. For the young people they meet and interact with, THEY are the face of the British Royal Family. The young people have heard of Diana of course but they don't have the same fascination with her that people in their 50s and 60s do.

As well, PW and PH, along with Kate, make such a refreshing change from other "celebrities" of today with their immense egos and barely-there clothing. Which is why I am still leery of Meghan. There is something about her in the way she writes and the programs she has been in (yeah I am a prude) that makes me wonder whether she has the maturity to be a part of a 'team'. I don't know, time will tell on that front.

I love Kate because she doesn't try to draw attention to herself. I think attention seeking signals insecurity. My opinion. To me she is an example to women on how to be comfortable in our own skins. She doesn't need to glam it up, she didn't need to be with the Princes yesterday when they walked to the gate. So she wore a new dress? Who knows when it was bought? I have clothes I bought a month ago that I haven't worn yet. Heck I have clothes I bought a year ago that haven't yet seen the light. Impulse buys. Kate is like us--well the wealthy part of 'us'. We buy clothes because we like them or because they suit an occasion. And after a few months they end up in a bag going to a charity shop.

Oh dear I am blathering again. I started this comment wanting to say that I think PW, PH and Kate are all very relatable to many ages. That for me what I will be watching for is what they do going forward, where they travel, the smiles on people's faces as they meet them, the happy marriage(s) and family(ies) they create (Lord knows our society needs those). I enjoy the snippets of information that they let slip that bring back happy memories for myself. Charlotte taking dance--I remember my daughter and granddaughters' lessons and how funny and sweet and loveable they were. And I can just see Charlotte demanding that George bring her a bouquet of flowers for her performance. And George kicking his heels in the chair, bored, just as my grandsons were. So relatable.

  48. What a lovely post. The gardens are very beautiful, and they truly do honor Diana's memory and good works. Too bad about the rain, but it didn't seem to dampen spirits. It's wonderful that her sons continue to carry on her good works. Diana's death brought such deep sorrow for so many, the tragedy will never be forgotten but she lives on in our hearts. As far as sartorial choices - Catherine's dress may be appropriate (poppies in remembrance), and that is touching, but it is simply awful. I don't understand why she dresses like a grandmother, never mind that it may be on trend to wear 70's style dresses, it is never on trend to look frumpy. It's a matter of opinion. Catherine, of course, looks beautiful no matter what she wears. Thanks for this most excellent post.

  49. Kate looks lovely. While many have commented on the style of the dress being 'matronly' it was interesting to me to see the side by side photos of Kate and Diana posted by Courtney. When I saw that I definitely thought that Kate didn't look matronly at all but stylish.

The dress is very Kate. She has the green floral dress she wore to the polo match, the green silk she wore to the Butterfly exhibit (everyone loved that dress, with the v-neckline). While I personally was hoping she'd wear the light blue coat - worn recently on her one day visit - I thought the dress was appropriate for the event.

  50. It seems that Kate may not only have been recognizing the event with a poppy print fabric but we are not the only ones to mention further heritage archive dressing by Kate in her choice of style of dress. Another "Kate thing". Courtney Cox, Today,
Duchess Kate Channels Princesd Diana Dress....", 8/31/17. She shows photos comparing Kate's dress with a dress Diana wore to St. Paul's Cathedral for her wedding rehearsal in 1981. The dresses are uber similar. Since Kate has a history of doing heritage archival dressing, it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was not a coincidence.

I don't know - my ring is from an unhappy marriage - it was a family heirloom and we've made our own history for it and have been very happy.

I'm not really sure Kate's dress is a tribute to Diana's - there are similarities but it wasn't a major style feature of Diana and Kate has worn several similar dresses - to events with no Diana connection like polo. I tend to think Kate thought it had the right balance of formality - they are at home - and went with the garden, and there may have been a significance to the poppy pattern - the only real similarity is the neck tie - and Kate wore one of those to the London Eye.

But if she dd intend a tribute, I agree with Anon - the marriage produced her husband so can't be a failure in Kate's eyes.

      Delete
    5. I do believe that Kate has given Diana nods on prior occasions, but this time I'm not convinced. Here, I think it has more to do with Kate liking dresses with a floral patter and, given the venue, it was an appropriate choice, especially with the poppies.

I also agree with Anon 6:24 and Julia regarding the "failure" factor. Some people feel the same way about Kate's engagement ring, but there too, William associates it with his mother, and not a failed marriage.

      Delete
    6. I agree. The ring and the dress, if the dress was a homage, are chances to re-write history purposefully and gallantly. A visual that it is a new day and lessons have been learned from the past and that heritage, however sad at points, will not be swept under the carpet. Family strength, survival and continuity will be celebrated. :)

were actually laughing. It wasn't an austere military ceremony/memorial. It is their front yard and a beautiful, light and cheerful garden. Their children may even play in the garden and enjoy the fishes in the small ponds just like William and Harry did. A happy place. I hope they are told that some of those fish were there when their father and uncle were little boys and when their grandmother used to relax in the garden. A sweet bit of history. :)

  54. Mollie, I too was perplexed by what I saw as Kate's demeanor during this event. I realize that photos do not capture all expression as live coverage does to give context. But the still photos at this occasion that I have seen published are somewhat redundant of most of other photos I have seen in the general media onmany occasions that Kate participates in as a member of the royal family. It is odd, in my opinion, that Kate is part of what some commentators refer to as "the trio". She is William's wife, and as such is a Duchess. I realize that all three are designated by the Kensington arm of the royal family be under an umbrella as to their various charities and causes; However, to reference Kate as part of a "trio" in general, implies to me that she is the equivalent to a sister as opposed to William's wife and Harry's sister-law.

I do not recall the same type of reference used in other European royalty or in British history at least during the 1 half + century of my lifetime. For example, I do not recall Princess Diana referred to as a "trio" with Charles and Andrew, prior to Andrew's marriage. Regardless of who Prince Harry marries, if and when he decides to legally- officially marry in accordance with the British royalty laws, I can not imagine that the "trio" would become a "quartet".

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Julia from Leominster2 September 2017 at 21:59

I refer to them as a trio because of their joint charity work - particularly for Head's Together and the fact they have done a number of engagements together. It's a short cut as much as anything for me when I want to refer to the three of them at a common engagement - saves me from listing their names. When they work separately, I refer to them separately, but there are issues such as number of engagements that apply to all three - so I refer to them as such.

Charles and Andrew don't work together - they are just brothers - with a sizeable age difference and it's not clear they are even very close. Their issues are completely different - they don't function as a duo. Likewise, Diana and Charles didn't work closely with Andrew - who was a navy flier at that time - sometimes when she and Fergie were together though - they were called The Windsor Wives or even the Merry Wives of Windsor.

At the end of the day - it's all short cuts more than anything but the amount William , Kate and Harry do together is unusual - we'll see whether they do become a quartet. I think it comes from the fact that William and Harry are both very close - and really somewhat removed from the rest of their family - and Harry has embraced Kate as a sister, not unusual I can say, coming from a close family myself where we see ourselves as a unity.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I respect your perspective Julie. However, I am very skeptical that Duchess Catherine would embrace Harry's wife as an equal or even a partner in royal endeavors for obvious reasons given the royal hierarchy, and my perhaps flawed assumptions about Catherine's generosity to other women in William's social circles in past unverified reports. I don't think Kate would take Harry's wife under her wing; and clearly isn't obligated to bring Harry's wife into the royal fold. I think the dynamics of the relationships with William and Harry and their respective spouses would be very different from the "trio" relationship. We don't really know, do we? But I applaud the closeness of the relationships in your family. I do think royal families relationships pose much different challenges. I believe I would be pretty naive to think otherwise.

      Delete
    3. I, too, think the "trio" reference has to do with W&H's bond as brothers, their "professional" relationship, and the causes they support. And, as William's wife and Harry's sister-in-law, yes, Kate is part of this trio. Hey, at least THIS trio is a GOOD thing for the Firm.

      Delete
    4. I think of them as a dynamic trio. They have a loving, caring bond that is very sweet and very special and very apparent. That is a very good thing. A super blessing. It is built on years of building trust and respect. Total symbiotic relationship all the way around. How could that ever, ever be thought of as a bad thing? Love, respect, trust, joy, altruism, those are things people yearn for and William, Kate and Harry have that. It is a joy to behold. HalleluYah. :)

      Delete
    5. And, I think that Kate will welcome William's wife into the fold generously, steadily and sincerely. I think Kate's faith would dictate nothing less and I think it is also part of her natural disposition. If how she got along at Marlboro, St. Andrew's and in assimilating seamlessly into the Royal family is any indication (and it very much is), Harry's wife will feel loved, nurtured and welcomed in her new life within the fold.

      Delete
    6. Keep in mind that photographers select moments when she is smiling to take pictures and people buy the shots of her smiling. She could have had a serious expression for 95% of the event but those aren't the pictures they want.

Her 20th anniversary looks like they have come full circle claiming her legacy as well as former residence, and observing the eve with the public, placing flowers. It echoes that week of September 1997, although they did not participate from KP. The garden is a beautiful beginning towards a tribute. It was good Kate was there observing the day in public with them. May Princess Diana’s soul rest in peace. I hope some of the emotional release / talking about it openly and honestly in recent months which had been repressed in their youth of grief, and arriving to this day, will give William and Harry some closure, to accept God's will and let be.
