Red Carpet on the Snow: The Cambridges' First Day in Norway!

The second leg of the tour officially began when William and Kate landed in Norway at Gardermoen Air Force Base, outside Oslo.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were scheduled to visit Uppsala Airbase before departing for Norway this morning. Unfortunately, heavy snow forced the cancellation of their final Swedish engagement. Due to the change of plans, they left from Arlanda Airport in Stockholm rather than Uppsala, where they received a briefing on the Swedish Armed Forces from Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist. During his speech last night, William said "Your security concerns are ours, and it is hugely important that we continue to work ever more closely together to reduce threats".

The Duke and Duchess were met by Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

William and Mette-Marit were colour coordinated in their coats and red scarves.

An arrival video.

The Telegraph reports Kate has never met Haakon and Mette-Marit before today. As in Sweden, where they were accompanied by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, the royal couple will escort them on several engagements in Oslo.

Mette-Marit, 44, studied ethics in Oslo before taking courses at SOAS, University of London, in development. Last year, she openly spoke about how a sudden onset of vertigo left her fearing early menopause. The couple have two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 14, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 12. Mette-Marit also has a 21 year old son Marius Borg HΓΈiby from a previous relationship. Last year she spoke about the level of media intrusion her son has experienced: "The last few years have been characterized by developments that I as a mother would naturally rather do without. Marius has been subjected to pressure from elements of the Norwegian press that I think is beneath them."

Simon Perry shared a video of the 'Narnia' like weather conditions.

Kate's PA Natasha Archer made a run for it armed with bags and a box.

From the airport, the royals travelled to the Royal Palace, where The Duke and Duchess will stay at the invitation of King Harald and Queen Sonja.

The Duke and Duchess were officially welcomed to Norway by The King and Queen.

William is welcomed by the couple.

The King and Queen hosted a luncheon, which was also be attended by other members of The Royal Family.

Ahead of the arrival, Kensington Palace said "The Duke and Duchess have asked, as with previous overseas visits, that this tour allow them opportunities to meet as many Norwegians as possible. The UK’s links with Norway are extensive, and Their Royal Highnesses are looking forward to building a lasting friendship with the people of Norway." The two-day visit will see the Duke and Duchess learning more about Norwegian entrepreneurship and innovation, meeting young people with a focus on mental health, an official dinner at the Royal Palace, and a visit the ski jump Holmenkollen, one of Norway's most iconic landmarks, which boasts dramatic views over the city of Oslo.

The royals exchanged gifts.

Laura noted the Duke and Duchess gave the King and Queen an official photo.

Oslo is a captivating city filled with stunning architecture.

These quaint houses in central Oslo date back to the late 1700s and 1800s.

The Oslo Tourism board shared the following photo with the caption "A floating sauna with a view to the Oslo Opera House. Something for Prince William & the Duchess of Cambridge when they visit."

After lunch, the royals met locals gathered outside the Palace.

A wave from the Duchess.

A sea of phones and cameras in the crowd.

The Duchess received flowers.

William and Kate took a selfie with Tonje Tejera who is celebrating her 50th birthday today. The couple wished her a Happy Birthday and Kate said "It was my mother's birthday yesterday".

Reporters described the turnout from the public as "huge".

They visited the Princess Ingrid Alexandra Sculpture Park within the Palace Gardens, which opened last year in the name of Princess Ingrid Alexandra to mark the 25th anniversary of The King's reign.

Appropriately, Princess Ingrid Alexandra led the way.

Kate chatting with Queen Sonja and Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

The sculptures, of which there are now four, are designed by and for children, through cartoon competitions in schools across the country.

They posed for photos.

Fires were lit along the path the royals strolled past.

Next, the royals attended an event held at MESH, a co-working space for entrepreneurs and start-up companies to grow their businesses and thrive in a creative environment.

Encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation are high priorities for Norway and the UK, with plenty of exciting collaboration across the North Sea.

A great photo of Mette-Marit, Kate and William.

The royals met a number of Norwegian and UK companies based at MESH showcasing their work, and will see how some start-ups are tackling issues such as the environment, and mental health and wellbeing, in new and engaging ways.

Simon Perry reports "Prince William and Kate take a trip down memory lane as they watch a special film of where they met — St Andrews — while trying out an exercise machine aimed at dementia sufferers".

Kate, Mette-Marit and Haakon watch on.

Kensington Palace shared a video from earlier in the day: "Earlier today, The Duke and Duchess got a special demonstration of The Swedish Air Force Gripen fighter jet as they flew between Stockholm and Oslo".

It's a hat-trick for Catherine Walker! Kate chose another coat by the brand today. The piece has a funnel neck. I expect Kate ordered the bespoke coats specifically for the tour and with fittings and measurements at this stage of her pregnancy, it may have been the easiest option to have one brand create several pieces.

Underneath, the Duchess wore the very pretty Seraphine Marlene dress.

From the product description:

'Worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, Seraphine’s Marlene Maternity Cocktail Dress is a true statement piece, perfect for special occasions. The soft woven skirt sweeps elegantly to the knee, creating a flattering A-line silhouette that’s perfect before, during and after pregnancy. The stunning lace bodice is lined in comfortable stretch jersey, while the elegant long sleeves are made in stylish peek-a-boo lace, with subtle bell detailing at the cuffs. Velvet ribbon detailing at the empire waist, cuffs and collar complete the look.'

The Duchess wore her Sumac Lacorine Luxury Alpaca Fur hat and her sapphire and diamond earrings.

Kate wore her Tod's Suede block heel pumps.

In the afternoon, Kate changed into the £455 Russell and Bromley Half N Half Stretch Knee High Boots (with thanks to Middleton Maven).

Kate carried a suede clutch.

Sara swiftly noticed Kate's Cornelia James Clementine Gloves with Faux Fur Trim.

This evening, The Duke and Duchess will attend an official dinner in their honour at the Royal Palace.

What a bummer that the last engagement was cancelled for everyone involved! The fans who would have been excited, the military and officials who have prepared for it and even for Will and Kate.

A positive from this situation was them being able to get a flight out even with snow. I am sure Sweden is used to dealing with snow but weather is persnickety sometimes.

Another positive is that it isn't a busy, floral, ruffly mish mash of styles and fripperies. Can't wait to see the whole outfit! It looks promising simply because it appears to be the antithesis of the two Erdems!

Too bad they had to cancel an event but the weather not even royals can control. They get a more realistic view of our country with snow though :P I love snow, but it has it's challenges!
Good thing they at least got to do part of the engagement with the briefing.

I'll be away this afternoon a bit (what are the odds that me, who never leaves the house, has an appointment right smack dab in the middle of their tour! Oh well!)

Can't wait to see them land! So much snow there too! Hopefully it will make for some great pictures!

Are you sure your appointment was not to meet them. May be you stopped by the airport today? Somehow and somewhere, I hope you have met them, or, will in the future. Enjoy your outdoor day. Have a nice one. Sweden and its royal couple had been interesting. Have you tried the vegan shoes yet?

Hahah, sadly not. A semi-medical appointment!

I hope I and many of us here meet them in the future!

It has been really fun following the tour so far. I love when royals from different countries interact!

I hope we see ankle boots at some point. Tights with cute ankle boots would’ve looked on point with this outfit, and potentially warmer (or at least would not make me feel as cold seeing Kate in those shoes!)

Please, is it really necessary to use such strong words as "monstrosity" and "horror"?? Without even adding "IMO" or something? It seems very unkind to me. Freedom of opinion, yes, fair criticism, yes, but this sounds like utmost negativity to me.

    7. Your post gave me a much needed chuckle this morning. I am certainly in the minority as I have liked both Erdem evening dresses and the today's Seraphine dress. Catherine is dressing for her position as future Queen Consort, regal and dare I say, timeless. She has gone from Kate to Catherine in my eyes. While the choices have been controversial, they will stand the test of time. Twenty years from now, we will all come to realise just how truly classic and timeless Catherine really is.

    8. I agree Zora, and I was just about to post a comment echoing what you just said. It's fine to not care for something but to post comments with such negativity and harshness is unjustified and not what this blog is about. I didn't happen to care for the two evening dresses, but I do happen to like the dress Kate's wearing today. So you've just insulted those who - even though maybe there are not many of them - do like the dresses.

    9. MD.😊 Me? Scared of ruffles? Not really, lol. Erdems? Yes, although appalled would be a better word.
I have ruffled tops in my closet now. My ruffles say that they adamantly disavow any kinship with Erdem. :)

Maybe there are other worthwhile things to get upset about.

And fyi - I actually like this dress. But I can understand why someone else might find it to be monstrous.

The snowy forest is magical! Looks like Mr.Tumnus may be hiding behind any tree :) And Oslo must be a fantastic place. Norway has been number one on my travelling wish list for some time now, I'm happy to be able to "taste it" through DKB.

Here in Minnesota I only wear boots when I absolutely have to. It's such a pain to wear the boots, bring the shoes, change into the shoes. And then there are the days when you've forgotten your shoes :o Notice that she changed into boots for the walk about.

While I got away with normal clothes in bigger sizes for my first son, by the time I reached number 3 I was living in baggy sweaters and elastic waists by the 6 month mark. I thought the green dress on day one and the cream one yesterday which went some way to disguising the pregnancy were fantastic. However, I do like today's outfit--both the coat and the dress.

Thank you Charlotte for being more than a fashion blog. I understand that many of your subscribers love fashion, and even I, who am NOT into fashion at all, feel that her evening dresses have been unattractive to me. But fashion is not going to heal this sad world. Or give us hope for the future. But these encounters, these positive engagements over mental health, over solidarity, will. And that's why I love your blog Charlotte because you give us SO much to think about, to understand. One thought I have this morning as I looked at Haakon and Mette Marit greeting W & K is that they probably spoke English to them. And I could tell, from the way that Daniel and Victoria were animatedly speaking with W & K for the past two days, that they did as well. I wonder if W & K learned any Norwegian or Swedish for their trips? I also wonder, now that I am going down that track, whether George and Charlotte (and Kate perhaps?) have learned any Spanish from Nanny Maria? How wonderful if they have! We may find out if W & K visit Spain in the future :)

    2. Jo, I agree. I am not that into fashion much myself, and appreciate that this blog is for so much more than that. It does bother me a bit when the headline of a post emphasizes what Kate wore, but I understand it's what's of interest to many readers. I enjoy when the comments focus on the work that Kate is doing and not on her choice of clothing. Especially when there's a lot of criticism. She's not a fashion model, she's not a paper doll. So what if sometimes we don't particularly care for what she's wearing. There's a lot of "Kate should wear this, wear that, change her hair, don't change her hair, get a stylist, etc." She'll never please everyone's taste so why even bother giving it any importance?
Having said that, I do comment when I especially like something she's wearing :)

Well, it use to be considered rude to shake a woman's hand without gloves, even in the US at formal events, but in this case, stepping out of a warm plane into cold and snow, she would have looked awkward stopping to strip the gloves off. She is obviously a warm person, why pick at this? She touches all kinds of people including the sick with her bare hands. MM spent lots of time outdoors carrying her gloves. Kate wore hers. I saw the maternity dress. It is the same silhouette as the erdems. similar pattern and color as the second erdem. more streamlined though. and it is maternity wear so I guess that’s progress.

I was disappointed to know Natasha is still with them and Amanda. To be honest, I very much want Kate to have a new stylist and a new hairdresser.
But they will probably be with Kate forever. And I think it was very weird that Amanda did that photo of her supplies. Don’t think that that helped the cause. Pampered Princess is not the best thought to convey.

And I have wisely given up expecting Kate to ever return to the vim and vigor of her early marriage fashion flair. For me, the erdems were that reality changer concerning that and then seeing Natasha and Amanda today....

Let’s just hope Kate doesn’t stay in her high-collared, buttoned-up mode like Anne got staid in her one style.
    Poor William, lol. :)

Didn’t see Catherine Quinn in the photos. Is she with them on the tour?

Kate seems to be emulating the “messy bun” style.

I found the hairdresser's posting of the picture strange as well. Maybe it's just me, but I always thought the reason for using tucker is very much about privacy and trustworthiness (since she's worked with the royals for a long time) and not much to do with actual ability as hairdresser. So seems very unintelligent of her to do something to hurt her biggest strength as hairdresser to kate. And you'd think she's worked with he Cambridges long enough and often enough to know just how esp obsessive they are about privacy.

  25. I have to say, this is turning out to be my favourite tour because I love the Swedish and Norwegian royals (they all seem so nice and warm) and seeing Kate meet them is just fantastic!
The coat is a great choice for a pregnant woman and the weather. I adore the Seraphine dress! It is a perfect maternity dress and the perfect dress to wear in wintery Scandinavia :) The shades of blue of both the coat and the dress suit Kate very well and again, are perfect for a Scandinavian winter in my opinion.
I love Mette-Marit's coat, belt and scarf and she has such pretty hair! Loved seeing Queen Sonja, the prettiest 80-year-old around and her outfit is lovely as well.
From what I can see in the one picture, I like Princess MΓ€rtha Louise's dress as well, so well done everyone! :)

I love the coat with the fur hat which she put on for the walk-about after lunch. The neck line of the coat is shaped so it closes in a perfect funnel shape. Lovely to see that Princess Ingrid Alexandra joined the party to, she’s suppprting her grandmother the Queen, how lovely .

  30. The dress was ok until those sleeves. She must have a thing for ruffly sleeves right now. At least this dress is actual maternity. I don't hate the dress. Not my favorite she's worn, but I don't hate it.

Too bad about the engagement in Sweden. I love snow when I can sit on my couch and sip a nice cup of coffee. Not so much when I have to travel. However, the snow is making for magical pictures!

    2. My Dear SG, we may disagree, but I think that Kate knows what she likes & is comfortable wearing & that N&A just support her by finding & facilitating what she is looking for. I wasn't as taken aback by the Erdems. I tried to find any pros to the first Erdem (I'll admit it was a challenge:) & last night I did like certain aspects of it. (not my first choice either). And she posted a video clip of Victoria actually stopping the Royal quartet before they entered a building so photogs could take a photo! Quite interesting! I wouldn't doubt that it's likely a preference, but obviously not a major problem, since W&K have been doing them sporadically for years. In fact, I think Meghan's wording was something like " We're not supposed to". So likely a preference & wish, but nothing that would send them to The Tower! lol :)

  48. I like today's coat, but I don't understand why she didn't wear this blue in Sweden and instead the red from yesterday to Norway.

Also how much better would it have been if she wore today's Seraphine dress at last night's event instead of the blue velvet Erdem? With the lace today it's certainly dressy enough for evening. Just my two cents.

    1. The first thing I thought when I saw The Seraphine dress was the same thing. How lovely that would have worked last night! But I also was an outlier & didn't have a big problem with last night's look, until I saw today's dress. This dress I love! :)

  49. Looks like a lovely visit. With their very close ties to the British royal family in the past, it must feel like a family gathering indeed. The group photos appear more unified than the Swedish ones in dress. The sculpture visit looks delightful and the crowds again substantial. The snow is beautiful - as much as I love Oslo (preferably in the summer) I'm happy to admire the white at a comfortable distance. Just a touch of snow is fine for me!

Kate looks very nice. The coat is similar to her other blue ones but having had the privilege from many years back of owning a Walker coat, their coats are heavily constructed and very warm - important with walkabouts. So it doesn't surprise me Kate chose Walker for her coats - if only she had for her gowns as well!

Although I don't believe in drawing too close comparisons Diana chose blue for her short visit to Norway - her first tour abroad alone as I recall - and was critiqued for it as the blue was thought to look cold. (Although not by me!) So fashion criticism is not new but here I will say everyone looks very nice - I liked both of Mette-Marit's outfits and Ingrid Alexandra is a lovely young girl. Diana wore a blazing beautiful 'Norwegian Midnight Sun' gown for dinner - one she first wore in Canada and later for a June Mendoza portrait - it was much acclaimed. We'll see soon what Kate and Mette-Marit wear.

  50. First up, thank you Charlotte for fantastic coverage! I'm in awe of your research skills and writing.

I love what Catherine is wearing today! The blue coat is very classic and I'm sure we'll see it reworn over the next few weeks before Catherine takes maternity leave. I like it better with the heels than with the boots, though I understand why she changed for the walk. But it was the fur hat and cuffed gloves that really made this a winner for me - blue and brown is one of my favourite pairings - she looks luxe and warm and, to be honest, not that pregnant!

Also, pleased to see an updo! A little looser than ones she usually has, very flattering. The lacey dress is a great choice for luncheon with the monarch. I hope she and William got to have a good natter with Princess Astrid (the lady in the blue floral next to Haakon), one of my fave royals!

Mette-Marit looks sublime in these swishy skirts. I can't think of another royal who wears white as well as she. Her look for the outdoor engagement is my favourite of the day so far, I think.

Sonja is terrific as always in sleek white and two gorgeous scarves. I love that she doesn't shy away from colour too, the orange coat is cheerful and looks warm.

A shout out to the men, of course, who look happy, relaxed and engaging. It's a treat to see Ingrid-Alexandra growing up into an intelligent and poised young woman. If you can't tell, this might be my very favourite of all of W+K tours (dodgy Erdem aside!) - they look so happy and comfortable.

  52. A nice cheery shade of blue that goes well with the chocolate brown furry accessories and stands out really well against all the snow. I like it, and Kate looks radiant again - the cold is certainly putting a lovely pop of colour in her cheeks.

I'm rather enjoying the Catherine Walker show so far on this tour - it takes me back to some of Diana's tours where the label was never in question (you just knew it was Catherine Walker)! I'm just puzzled as to why Kate hasn't, as yet, asked for any evening pieces from the label - even outside of pregnancy. My only hope is that Erdem hasn't been tasked with providing all of her evening outfits for the tour - I'm not sure I (or the Internet) could cope with the disappointment of another like the last two! I'm keeping everything firmly crossed that there may be another McQueen piece to come at some stage.

One thought- she had her hair up before going out on the walkabout. I wonder if her team really redid and recurled her hair or if she took it down and it just... did that!? If it’s the latter... I have got to know how to do that!!!

    1. Annika, I do think she just let down her bun! I do that all the time & It always gives my hair a fresh shape. In fact when I'm out & about & traveling, I actually take time to twist & wind up hair into a messy bun & then when I take it out my hair has soften waves or a soft curl to the ends. If your hair is long enough, even just to the shoulder & it works best if it's not too layered, but if so, pins can just hold in any whisps on the smooth part of your head above the bun. You just pull your hair back, as if you are going to put your hair in a pony tail, but I personally don't use a rubber band (to avoid a crimp line) so you wind it very tight, all the way to the end tips of your hair. Then you roll the long tight ponytail type straight twist of hair around into a circle (as high or low as you want on your head) & then feed the remaining ponytail twist through (almost like pulling it through the donut you've created with your twist) then for me I just pull the remaining ponytail twist to tighten the bun & I leave the remaining hair out & release the twisted hair in my hand (after pulling in through) & let it fall naturally. You can even secure the bun underneath with a bobby pin. I hope this makes sense? Somehow I think I made it more complicated than it is? Ha! lol :) I'm sure there is something on you tube that explains different ways to do it.... much better than my lame attempt to explain! :)

    2. I actually think she looks really good in that style hat. Most of the ladies had on fairly sturdy boots not the more fashionable style of boot so I think it works. It is a heavier look with the hat but practical.

      Delete
    3. Agree Annika about the hat. There are beautiful faux fur hat scarf combos that are elegant and inexpensive (Check them out online). I think a contrasting cream combo would be beautiful. I agree with commentary about Kate wearing boots upon her arrival. I think that look would enhance the coat and be appropriate for the weather while the shoes are indoor only in this circumstance IMHO. Kate obviously loves blue, and the coat is very pretty but I would love to see her in the suggestions I recommend. To spend money on bespoke dresses must include an allowance for accessories that are diverse and add style opportunities to Kate’s wardrobe foundational pieces, like the blue coat. The coat could probably could be styled in so many ways for future use. I am revealing my personal preferences regarding the lacy, high collar dress. As I might have mentioned before, her options are limitless, but didn't Kate wear a similar blue Temperley London Lace Midi Dress last Fall at World Mental Health Day?

I'm beginning to come to the conclusion that I just don't care for Kate's style and that's okay. I love her, and she's gorgeous in everything single thing she wears, but her taste in clothes leaves me shaking my head. Occasionally she does surprise me by wearing something more youthful and edgy. 63. I have also noticed that (to me) Kate's mannerisms are notably different, than on other tours. Usually she has this formalness, interacting with their hosts & talking with her hands a lot. She also, in past, has used her go to "clutch stance" as she's standing around. I have also observed her interacting with her previous hosts in a polite but somewhat formal way. During this tour she has seemed, to me, to have a more natural flow during her interactions with her hosts. To me, it indicates a different level of comfort & authenticity. I think she's Really Enjoying This Tour & spending time with These Younger Royal Couples! It's so nice to see! :)

      Delete
    3. I can't say for certain, but I don't believe alpacas are killed for their fur. Their wool is too valuable, so they only take the fur after the animal dies of natural causes. Thereby, it's technically considered "ethical" fur if that makes any difference.

I like all of the discord in the commentaries, including within the British royalty, because many opinions can be heard! Fashion and style may be subjective and subject to fair interpretations. 78. I like this dress but would have left off the ruffle on the sleeve -- she seems to like them as they show up a lot on her dresses. Glad to see her in real maternity wear vs. that horrible gold thing she wore last night.

  79. Sorry, Joyce. I am no FUR EXPERT at all. Thanks for the correction. Charlotte, I’m enjoying this tour, thanks to you and your diligence to posting.

  80. Her evening dress for the Oslo dinner was absolutely lovely. I don't know if it's the camera or it would show in person, but the Duchess needs to either wear a different bra (maybe nude colored?) or have it adjusted b/c it looks a tad dowdy to me in this glam dress. Otherwise, she just glistens!

  81. ANOTHER CW coat! Love it! And I can totally understand Kate's decision to buy this dress. It is sooo Kate. ;-)

But more importantly I love seeing the interaction between W&K and their hosts.

Charlotte, I think she switched to a brown clutch for the walkabout? All accessories seem to be brown at that stage.

Just a thought but why did Kate bother with black pumps and clutch for arrival? I would’ve opted for navy - goes with the coat and the dress better than black, then she could’ve changed to choc brown for the walkabout.

  84. Catching up from yesterday's visit. I am so impressed with the Norwegian royals. I don't remember such a welcome in past visits. It's almost like a state visit. The King looks at Willam and Kate like he's greeting long lost children. So pleasing to see.

  86. Charlotte there is a sweet photo of the jumpers the Norwegian royals gave. They say "For Kate, for William, for George, for Charlotte, and "For the Prince or Princess to Come." It made me smile.
