It's a Family Affair for Harry & Meghan's Windsor Wedding!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George and Princess Charlotte watched Prince Harry marry Meghan Markle in Windsor today.

Prince William was by his brother's side as his best man. The pair spent last night at Coworth Park before arriving in their Blues and Royals uniforms this morning. Seven years ago, Harry was William's best man and William looked delighted to return the favour. The two joked and it appeared William offered gentle words of encouragement as they waited in the chapel.

Kate arrives with very special members of the bridal party.

True to form, Princess Charlotte was eager to get going :)

A wave from the car window.

The Duchess with the mothers of the other page boys and bridesmaids including Meghan's friend Jessica Mulroney.

The Middleton family were in attendance and arrived together. I believe Carole wore Catherine Walker.

Pippa Matthews, who is expecting her first child, sported the very pretty Hepburn dress by The Fold.

It was great to see Kate's former private secretary Rebecca Deacon.

George and Charlotte joined a bridal party of ten walking up the aisle with the bride.

The other children in the party were Prince Harry's godson Jasper Dyer, the son of his longtime mentor Mark Dyer; Harry's goddaughters Zalie Warren and Florence van Cutsem. The van Cutsems have been close friends of the princes since their schooldays. Meghan's goddaughters Remi and Rylan Litt, the daughters of close friend Benita Litt from LA, and Meghan's best friend Jessica Mulroney's twin boys John and Brian and daughter Ivy.

Meghan was escorted down the aisle by the Prince of Wales.

The happy couple.

The Royal family watched Harry and Meghan exchange their vows.

Kate sat beside the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Andrew. Below, chatting with the best man.

Singing hymns.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Afterwards, the royals gathered on the steps.

A terrific shot of William and George in their matching uniforms. The page boys wore miniature versions of the Blues and Royals frockcoat. The uniform draws its insignia from the Blues and Royals, which is an old regiment of the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Both wore Blues and Royals frockcoats for the Wedding Day. The frockcoats are made from blue doeskin, single-breasted in style with a stand-up collar and completed with figured braiding of the regimental pattern. The figured braiding was scaled down for the pages, as otherwise it would have gone above their shoulders. As a special memento, each page had their initials embroidered in gold on their shoulder straps. The pages did not wear hats or white waist belts for practical reasons.

The bridesmaid dresses were designed to have the same timeless purity as Ms Markle's dress. Each one is sculpted in ivory silk Radzimir, is high-waisted with short puff sleeves, and hand finished with a double silk ribbon detail tied at the back in a bow. The bridesmaids’ dresses include pockets and pleated skirts to create a relaxed and luxurious silhouette. Each also wore white leather Aquazurra shoes, monogrammed with the bridesmaid's initials and the wedding date. The shoes are a gift from Meghan to the young ladies as a keepsake of the special day.

Another regal wave from the Princess.

Waving the newlyweds off as they leave for the carriage procession.

William and Kate were all smiles as they departed for the reception with the little Prince having a good look around.

These two did a wonderful  job.

Meghan looked radiant in a beautiful gown by Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller worn with Queen Mary's bandeau tiara.

For the evening reception, she changed into a sleek Stella McCartney gown and accessorised with Diana's aquamarine ring. William and Kate joined 200 other guests at Frogmore House to celebrate.

Shortly before arrivals, the Palace said the Duchess would be wearing "a primrose yellow wool silk tailored coat by Alexander McQueen". When Kate arrived it looked like she was wearing her cream McQueen fit-and-flare design. I thought there must have been a last-minute change of plan. Certainly, the styling of the look suggests plans for primrose yellow were organised.

Kate debuted the cream coat for Charlotte's christening.

She later wore it at Trooping the Colour.

And most recently for a 2017 visit to Belgium.

UPDATE: After looking at several close up shots, it does seem Kate did wear a new coat. It is almost identical to the piece shown above and in the majority of photos it looked the same colour (to me at least) rather than primrose lemon. Another possibility - the very similar hue has led to suggestions Kate's original coat was altered. It' A big thank you to Perth Fashion for her work on this.

UPDATE: It's been confirmed Kate wore a new coat.

Kate accessorised with a new floral Philip Treacy hat from the SS18 Collection.

The Duchess wore her Jimmy Choo Romy pumps.

Kate sported a pair of Kiki McDonough earrings.

And a citrine ring.

I believe there's a strong possibility it's a ring Kate's had for over a decade. She was spotted wearing it for her 26th birthday celebrations.

It was an absolutely beautiful wedding. You can view the full post over at Mad About Meghan.

I know right! (And I mean it in the most wonderful, non-judgemental way possible! I usually don't like commenting on body but it made me happy to see!)

    4. I think this is refreshing, too, because she could be like a lot of celebrities and wear two pairs of Spanx to an event.

  3. She looks great for just giving birth. I figured she would recycled a outfit, but surprised she picked white or cream. Kinda a wedding no no lol.

Princess Charlotte was so cute and has this Princess thing down.

    1. It sounds like there was a last minute change - I wonder why? The fact she almost always matches earring colour to dress further supports a last minute change.

Yes, I suspect there was a last minute change, too....I mean, I get not wanting to upstage the bride by recycling an outfit but something seems amiss here. I just google imaged "primrose yellow" (the 2017 Pantone color of the year) & it's a bright yellow like a daffodil....

Perhaps it was TOO bright?? Maybe she didn't want to compete with Amal? Kidding kiddding! But I'm so curious as to what happened. One of the kids spilled a snack on her?

Kate did seem as if she was trying to rally herself for the occasion but couldn't quite manage it. And I couldn't either if I was barely a month post partum!

    3. You're right. I wondered why she seem to be looking down the whole time at the wedding as if she were reading. Particularly during the wonderful exchange of the vow. Everyone on the other side, the Mulroney's & others were smiling their faces off.

    4. Anon 16:34, you are right.... I just caught the replay of The Service & during The Vows, The Mulroney's were smiling from ear to ear like they were about to burst, while both Will & Kate had their heads down reading the program??? I wonder if they felt the exact opposite of what they appeared..... I wonder if they were feeling overcome with emotion & were trying to remain composed? I hadn't thought of that until I watched it a second time through! This had to be an extremely emotional day for them both! The culmination of years of history & journey with Harry!! It could be one of those times in life that you just can't be jolly, as you are so filled with emotion & it's not the time to show that emotion!....... Just a thought! xo

And add to that Kate's hormones right now with some tiredness and overcoming emotion and/or tiredness when sitting down is all very likely explanations!

    6. That's a really good suggestion you put forth. If Kate in particular isn't feel up to it all from "baby blues" she would be emotional especially at the vows.

  4. Did anyone notice the ring (yellow colour stone) on Kate's right hand?

  5. I'm reading online that this is the same coat dress Kate wore to Charlotte's christening and to Trooping the Colour in 2016, and I thought so at first too, but now I'm thinking that it is not the same one.... I don't think that one would fit around her waist as it was form fitting then and now she's still got a bit of a baby belly. And this one is yellow? It's hard to tell...at first I thought it was cream but then when you see her next to someone wearing cream, it does look more yellow.

    1. I agree. Unless she had it let out.

Or maybe a similar cut in a new colour? Might not have photographed yellow even if it was.

      Delete
    2. I'm more inclined to think this coat dress is pale yellow now and that she wore it in cream with a pink hat to Trooping two years ago. At that time the coat looked distinctly cream, and she could wear any color hat with it. I just can't see her wearing a yellow coat with a pink hat to Trooping. So either she has it in two different colors or she dyed the cream coat yellow and altered it for the wedding and just brightened it up with the yellow hat. I must say also that I was disappointed in the way her hair was styled for the wedding; however, I understand how hectic the morning must have been with three small children, two of whom had to be dressed to be in the wedding party. Other that that I think Kate really tried to deflect any attention away from herself on Saturday.

  6. I can't believe how slender and fabulous Kate looked! I thought her coat dress was the same one she wore to Charlotte's christening. It looked white on my screen, not yellow. I was surprised by the white, but maybe the color was off on my monitor.

  9. These comments are just about Kate because I did my big raptures over Meghan, Harry and the wedding over at madaboutmeghan. Kudos to Kate for being the perfect sister-in-law-to-the-bride. Her outfit was understated, elegant, she was definitely not out to upstage anyone. Some on the Internet are saying it is the same coat dress she has worn before and castigating her because it was too white looking. I say that she knew that this day was NOT about her and she was the biggest help possible with the children. And she blended in. She even brought Nanny Maria with her to help with the children before the procession down the aisle. I wonder if that was Kate's own offer, and I think might be typically kind of her to offer that. I thought she was looking a bit sleepy during the ceremony. The "side looks" that the Internet talked about to me looked like sleepy eyes.

I did wonder exactly where Prince Louis was. I don't think he would have been at KP because if she is breastfeeding, that would be a long time to be away from him. Probably expressed her milk though.... Oops, TMI maybe. I wonder how long she and William will stay tonight. If Louis is at KP, they will probably leave early. And did George and Charlotte get bedded down at Windsor I wonder?

Charlotte is a star. Watch out world, she is going to be a force to be reckoned with! Maybe she and Mia Tindall will grow up to be as close as William and Harry are. The love that the brothers have for each other simply shone through these whole two days of wedding festivities. William is as subtle as Kate with his gestures--the way he dropped back when he and Harry exited the gate last night at Windsor so they could meet their well-wishers. He wanted to make sure Harry had his moment. And this morning they strode together in such a joyful way.

All in all, it has been a wonderful lead-up to the day, the day has been perfect (England has never looked more beautiful) and thank you Charlotte for everything you did to help us feel a part of it.

    2. It looked to me like Kate was agreeing with Camilla, and the rest of the Royal family- but unlike everyone else, she remembered the cameras were around. This is what makes her a good royal and more like the queen than anyone else. Though, I don’t know if the Queen would have found an American preecher preaching with enthusiasm quite as “hilarious” as the others did. I think she is more worldly than that, as are Harry and Meghan. The family’s smirks were disappointing and seemed disrespectful to me.

      Delete
    3. I read that Kate and the children have been staying at Windsor since Thursday, so I'm sure that's where they'll all be staying tonight, too.

What I wonder is who was looking after Louis while nanny Maria and the Middletons were all the church.

      Delete
    4. the "side-eye" I think was due to the fact that her hat obstructed her view to her right, so possibly she's trying to look to the right at Camilla without having to turn her whole entire head, which would be distracting in such a large hat/fascinator.

      Delete
    5. I wonder if there isn't a second nanny we haven't heard about yet.

      Delete
    6. They both look like they are holding back laughter (the side-eye) and the shots of the other royals show the same. It made me sad to see and did not look gracious to their guests and the preacher. It’s the first time in a long time I have considered something Will and Kate have done is a misstep.
They probably hired another person to watch the Louis. They have lots of resources and available help.

      Delete
    7. Pam, I am wondering if there is at least a night nurse, I will also be interested in seeing if they add another Nanny over the next year if they have not already.

      Delete
    8. Let’s not jump to conclusions about what the RF expressions during the preaching were about. We couldn’t see what they were seeing or hear what was going on around them. They may well have had something else entirely they were reacting to. They are professional spectators of occasions, I doubt they would act inappropriately at an event.

      Delete
    9. I also think that they might add another nanny. 3 small children are a lot for just one nanny and Maria needs spare time (plus vacation time?!) as well. And if Maria needs to pick up Charlotte and George from nursery and school at completely different locations plus take care of a baby while William and Kate are on engagements, it could get quite tricky.

      Delete
    10. Watching the livestream I could hear what they were hearing and see much of what they were seeing. I can’t know what they were thinking but given that their amused looks and near-laughter occurred during the preacher’s speech (about a work of love, no less) I do conclude it was in reaction to him.

I also noticed Kate wasn’t looking at Harry and Meghan during the vows. You could see her in the background of one of the camera angles. I wonder about this. I wouldn’t have been able to take my eyes off of them.

  14. It was wonderful to see the Duchess of Cambridge today. I thought her hat looked good. I wonder what happened to the originally planned McQueen. When I saw her coat I thought she was just trying to not upstage the bride and decided to wear a repeat, but now I’m wondering what happened to the primrose yellow. Regardless, she looked lovely, but a little tired, as I’m sure any mother of a small baby would be. I wish we could see her night reception dress!

  15. Beautiful post as always, Charlotte! I really appreciate all the pictures of the little ones - for me - it was the highlight of the wedding (ok, that and the veil, but this is not the forum for that!!!)

I think you are onto something about the Duchess not wearing the dress she was supposed to - I can only imagine that in the craziness of getting the children ready and saying farewells to baby Louis that something untoward happened to the original dress! With true Kate aplomb she solved the problem, grabbed something appropriate from her closet, got the kids in the car and arrived without a hair out of place. Brought me back to my own baby/toddler mom days! (only without the "not a hair out of place" bit!!)

Thanks again - I follow your blog very closely but seldom post - you are amazing and always a bright spot in my day!

    1. I agree with this idea unless as some have suggested it actually was a new yellow dress, even if the same style as her cream one, and it just did not photograph as yellow. Agree she might have had trouble fitting into her original cream one this soon after giving birth.

    2. Or maybe she still didn’t feel right or didn’t think she looked good. The first few weeks so much is changing in your body even from hour to hour. But I could totally see a baby or kid related mess as well! :) the close to white doesn’t bother me, I’ve always thought this is a bit of a strange rule. Unless you also have a veil on and walk up the aisle I don’t think anyone is confusing you for the bride or thinks your detracting attention 😉😉

  16. I have to say that today was super interesting for me in terms of the Duchess of Cambridge; today the D of C was just another member of the royal family and not THE star; it was lovely to see the D of C be so considerate of the Duchess of Sussex (so nice to write that!) by wearing a lovely but oh-so-simple-don't-look-at-me outfit. In fact, she was just one more member of the royal family, sitting in the pews, casually chit-chatting and not having the limelight on her as girlfriend, bride, fashion maven or mom. Again, she was just another member of the royal family (it must have also felt like a welcome (if odd) novelty on some level for her). Sylvia

    1. I too was struck by how “established RF member” Kate looked. She’s come so far. Charlotte amongst your amazing feats today is the spot-on supposition about a last-minute change of dress. I think you’re probably right.

      Delete
    2. It's odd to think of the shift. She's no longer the new gal in The Firm! She's very "Old Guard" now! With Meghan coming into the family, Kate seems more Windsor to me than Middleton! Isn't life & perspective a funny thing! :)

  17. Kate pros: It looks like Kate might have dyed her dress. In older pictures it looks stark white and in pictures of the weddding, it definately looks light yellow (on my screen). I can’t believe how great Kate looks so soon after giving birth!

Kate cons: I wish she had dyed her dress slightly darker or another color to avoid “she’s wearing white” critiques away.

Megan Cons: I wish the fit were better on her dress. It was too tight in the hip area. An inch or two more of wiggle room would’ve kept the unflattering creases at bay. I also didn’t like the veil to dress proportion. A shorter veil or a longer train would’ve looked better imo.

Meghan pros: Great tiara, great hair (before it started falling apart), and great dress! Her dress style is very “in” right now. Major bridal houses have started shifting away from lace / beading on nude mesh to modest but modern minimalist styles.

    1. It looked very pale yellow to me. I just cannot imagine she would wear a cream nearly white dress to the wedding. She many other dresses that she could have worn if something happened to "the real dress". She knows that would be a big no no. I think it was dyed too but not nearly enough. JMHO

      Delete
    2. I don’t know if Kate dyed her dress.

I know this is Kate’s site but a quick note on The creases on Meghan’s dress: they weren’t from it being too tight but creases from sitting. It the kind of fabric that does that.

      Delete
    3. I guess it is possible that Kate let her dress out a bit and had it dyed as she may be about ready to put it in "will not be wearing" again part of her closest and was great way to not have to spend much on a "one wear" outfit due to her post pregnancy size.

      Delete
    4. It does look pale yellow to me too. And the shoes certainly do, they don't look nude. I also wonder if this outfit has just that little bit more room around the waist, otherwise it seems identical. I wonder if it is the same, and the light in the sun makes it look light yellow, or if it really was the same one? It is not primrose, that is for sure. White blends in with the bridesmaids, but is too close to home on a wedding, I think. Primrose yellow would have been nice. In any case Kate looks lovely.

  21. I absolutely LOVE Kate's hat. I love when she wears hats in that style and this one is super nice. And I realized that George had on real pants very nice, too. Maybe something spilled on her other dress---this one is different enough that people shouldn't worry about upstaging the bride. I think that rule came about when dresses were more similar and being white was a main distinction. And Charlotte is so adorable!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the rule also has to do with photography. It's not only a matter of not knowing who the bride is---unless the guest is wearing lots of lace &/or a floor-length gown there's not likely to be confusion about that point! But in group photographs unconsciously the eye is drawn to figures in white, cream, ivory as the focus. If there's more than one then the eye IS momentarily "confused" as to where to focus. But when that happens it's not that the viewer doesn't consciously know (or can easily figure out unless 2 women wear white lace gowns) who the bride is.

I don't think Kate wore "primrose yellow" by McQueen. All kinds of things could have happened to what she planned to wear. Didn't fit, got soiled, wrong dress bag got packed. Could have just been one of those things that happen. I do think what she wore is a bit too light. And I expect if one of the York sisters or Camilla had worn this color lots of people would agree! The color the McQueen Co. calls primrose yellow is fairly bright--not this cream color at all. It's much closer to the color of the flower in her hat.

  23. First, thank you Charlotte for always doing an amazing job with this and your Meghan blog, especially today!

As for Kate, I thought she looked lovely, but a little subdued today. Maybe tired, maybe distracted by having G&C in the wedding party. Seemed like she and Camilla were bonding during the service, but I did think some of their reactions to the American minister bordered on disrespectful. I can see how his fiery delivery was unexpected, but these ladies are well versed in hiding their feelings.

As for the dress issue, perhaps the yellow McQueen intended for today just didn't fit right on her post baby shape, and she didn't want to alter it. She's favored cream for her babies' christenings, but maybe we'll see this yellow dress at Louis' christening.

    1. I agree with everything you have said! Charlotte did a great job on these blogs! I thought Kate looked lovely and subdued too and I found the moments of the royal family reacting to the minister borderline disrespectful as well. It shocked me to see them like that’s actually and then I wondered if maybe I’m imagining they are different then how they really are. I see now that the dress is light yellow when I compare it to the white of other dresses in the same picture. Perhaps she didn’t realize how pale it would look in the sunlight or in photos.

Zipzipzippy , I do agree with you regarding the fact members of the BRF should definitely at least look respectfull even when they are surprised or shocked, I remember Camilla laughing with Charles in Canada while listening to natives singing a strange two voices song, I thought I would never have dared doing that . I have been quite surprised not to see all the family smile, and what about the Queen ..... rather strange ....m

      Delete
    3. The Queen appeared as she always does. Stoic, listening. Some outlets are showing her shifting her shoulders as a reaction to the minister but I think she was just moving around the way one does. She was royal. The rest though, I have to agree about their poor behaviour. It was rude to be so terribly amused by the minister, as if he were doing something wrong. They’ve never heard a passionate sermon? That may be true but it makes them seem unworldly and cold if they haven’t. And given that race is a factor it it made me quite uncomfortable. This is coming from someone who has followed Kate and the family as a fan.
That’s horrifying about Camilla laughing at a native song. I would hope the royals would have an attitude of curiosity and embracing others. Laughter in this context appears rude.

      Delete
    4. Just a note about Charles and Camilla laughing at the throat singers: In response to criticisms of the convulsed royals, several papers and news reports said that their response was appropriate! As CBC News explained, traditional throat singing, called Katajjaq "is a performance and type of contest where two women [or] girls face each other, trying to sustain unique rhythmic patterns while making sounds to imitate animals or their surroundings. Whoever runs out of breath or laughs first, loses....It's common for a performance to be done for visiting dignitaries and special occasions and people always laugh, if it wasn't okay to laugh they wouldn't keep doing it.”
The link below shows two little girls performing throat singing at our Prime Minister’s inauguration ceremony. The little girl in white just can’t keep it together! :)

That first picture, like the family shot on their Christmas card, shows only Charlotte really ready for the photographer. This time, everyone else looks pretty much out of sorts. George really appears to fear the long cameras, poor guy.

  25. I imagine the original dress had something happen to it. She is a mom of three young children. Louis's spit up, open lipstick jostled into her lap, accidental smudges from one of the kids. It happens, lol. I love her hat! It was a beautiful wedding all around.

Haha I agree! It's one thing if there is a small 60s wedding with a knee length skirt and hat in white on the bride, then I could see not wanting to go the route of Kate's look today. Or if it's a black/white tie dress code for the guests then avoiding a floor length white dress might be preferable. But in a case like this when the bride is clearly in a gown and veil and Kate is in a coat and hat there is none of those issues and just some unnecessary "pearl-clutching". But then on the other hand, stuff like what colour to wear has very different emotional meaning in different cultures so for some it might look shocking and disrespectful. To me, it really doesn't.

I think it is a redone pattern in a new yellow fabric. Here's why..... in the 13th photo where they are doing their vows, Kate's dress i the background is clearly yellow like her hat. The Duke of York's shirt, in contrast, is clearly white which indicates it's not the lighting altering the color. I think the altering occurs in the bright sunshine...washing out the yellow into cream...

    1. Thank you PB! I haven't chimed in, because my brain is still too groggy to find the right words! lol :) I too believe that (just like with her Emilia Wickstead Dresses) she had another version made, of her Christening McQueen coat dress, however this one was more of a "Chiffon Yellow"! Who knows.... perhaps it was one already prepared for Trooping or to have on hand for another post-pregnancy occasion? I'm always open to being wrong, but I too read it as in the yellow family. I did the same thing as PB & noticed how it held up & compared to the other known "whites or creams" around her. I compared that to the original photos of her wearing her White McQueen, to the other 3 occasions & it read in all those photos as a True White, even as compared to the other True White's around her at the time. So that's my little 'ol 2 cents! lol :)

    7. You are right. The others around Kate who are wearing white definitely show as white while Kate’s dress looks yellow. Also in some of the outside shots the bright sun washes Camilla’s dress to a very pale pink not the bright pink it looks like inside

    8. First time commenter here, but I’m sure it is a different coat. I agree that it is yellow, especially when compared to the whites around her. But I also found a picture on the Instagram of @todayshow and there is a side by side of the coats (they are saying it’s a rewear) but you can see the new coat has buttons on the sleeves where the old one (in the picture where she is holding charlottte) didn’t. It’s hard to find pictures that show the buttons, but but based on the colour, sizing and the buttons I think it is a different coat.

  30. Kate looked so good for being 3 weeks post pregnancy. I really liked her straighter hair style. Nanny Maria was there? I missed seeing her. Baby Louie must have been in the care of another? That must have been hard at his age.

Prince George is still so cutely shy. Princess Charlotte sure has an adorable personality. Am I only one wondering if Charlotte's hair was trimmed. Looked shorter since hospital photo. All the kids were cute and so well behaved. That was amazing.

Kate’s coat looked very yellow in the church next to Camilla but rather white at the rest of the time. It bothered me a bit but than I saw several other women in very pale/beige colours so she wasn’t the only one and there was no way one could upstage that bridal look!
The men’s outfits were great but also gave me a bit of a serious vibe. Still love it.

  32. Interesting to see if there was a problem with the pale yellow ensemble or not - I just thought Catherine was repeating so she would blend in in her beautiful way of not distracting from the bride - although i did think it odd to pick if it was the Christenihg coat it certainly was cream and a little too near the white spectrum for a wedding. Maybe the look was meant to be similiar to Zara’s wedding which was creamy gold overtones. Not a criticism at all, she’s only given birth 3 weeks ago, but she didn’t look as polished as I was expecting - maybe an up do was too time consuming / or she was more focused on children. I think
She was trying to play down the focus on herself in that beautifully understated way she does at weddings. Hopefully if there indeed was a pale yellow outfit which didn’t happen, we may see it at the trooping of the colour ceremony.
Both Charlottes ( you and little princess) are stars 🥂

Wow, Charlotte, you are a rock star! I was following your coverage over at Mad about Meghan all day yesterday, and couldn’t believe you got this post up too!

This was such a lovely day all around. Too and we may never know what Kate really intended to wear. I did find the cream an odd choice, although it allowed her to match Charlotte. But I did think the idea of a repeat, though disappointing for us, may have made sense as an effort to keep attention on the new Duchess.

I was also quite curious to see Charlotte’s take on that right hand ring - all I saw all day was chat that it may be a new “push” present or anniversary gift, but leave it to Charlotte to figure out it may have just been an old ring she already had!

I do wish we would ever get to see the evening looks, but completely respect this is their one part of the day to have privacy!

Thank you again, Charlotte, for your wonderful coverage on TWO blogs. Hope to see baby th couples soon for all the June events!

  35. First I was a bit disappointed to not see more of Kate and the children. But thinking of it now, it was Harry & Meghans day and neither Kate nor the G&C did steal the show to Meghan.

My first thought about Kates dress was...white/cream? As far as I know it is a no go on weddings. She looked lovely! Beautiful hat with the flowers on the side and liked the straighter way of her hair.

Little Charlotte seemed to have got a hair cut :) Its so nice and interesting that in that outings you can so clearly see the different characters of George & Charlotte. I look so much forward to seeing Charlotte growing up!

  36. It's clearly two different dresses! One has the darts/lines at about the breast, the other has no lines. In pictures inside the chapel it is very clearly pale yellow. Outside it looks cream due to the light. Please correct, she isn't wearing cream! What a faux paux if she was.

  37. With Kate stress being different than the one they announced I was remembering when I had an infant. You never know what kind of spills happen as you're walking out the door. I had a diaper explode all over my shoes and everything one day we were rushing off to an appointment and had to change literally everything I was wearing.

Zoom in on the photo of the kids walking up the stairs and you will see Charlotte stopping to turn around to wave. Look at the amused look on Kate's face. That little girl has quite a personality! So cute!

Look how happy William is for his brother. And there are pictures of Charles on the other site looking just as happy with Megan and Doria. He was so sweet on several occasions to assist Doria and include her next to him. Very different picture than what the media has portrayed about him. So sweet and sincere.

Overall a wonderful day. Thanks Charlotte for all your reporting over two full days! You gave us a very fun weekend!

I am not saying there isn't but if you can be more specific I would love to look at and see. If different maybe it was let out? Maybe she had it duplicated in a new fabric and a bit bigger? Or I wondered if she had let it out and dyed it as dying would help cover up old seams etc. I also can't find any images showing buttons on the sleeves. Thanks for any help.

    2. Hi Ali, if you have Instagram have a look @todayshow, they are showing a side by side picture and with the coat shown at the wedding you can see there are buttons, but in the picture where Kate is holding Charlotte you can see there are no buttons on the sleeve of that coat. She may have added the buttons, but I think given the difference in colour, buttons and size/fit it’s likely she has had a new similar (maybe too similar) coat made.

  39. I think this is a different dress...but intentionally similar to not steal the limelight from Meghan? The coat worn previously was very fitting through the mid-section. I don't see how it would've fit Kate this time without being too tight through the abdomen. And to me it looks pale yellow when she's inside the chapel. The color might look washed out in the outdoor photos due to the strong sunlight.

Charlotte your commentary on both blogs is nothing short of spectacular. I thought Kate looked radiant yesterday given the pressures of having her children play a prominent role and her 3 weeks post partum. She remains my favorite Royal for all obvious reasons. The only thing more enjoyable to watch during the wedding than that toothless Mulroney twin reaction to the music/start of the ceremony (pure excitement) was Williams sincere encouragement toward his brother.

As an American, I thought the sermon was too long as too intense. Know your audience. I believe he could have been equally as effective in half the time and with a more balanced tone (like he was at end).

    1. Thank you Rita. I agree with everything you said. Kate remains my favorite royal, too.

And yes Bishop Curry was too long and intense. You said it beautifully. I have spoken long ago with my black friend. It's nothing for black clergy to go way over the "12 noon" every Sunday. This is who they are. That's okay but not at a wedding.

    2. Well said Rita, I too agree with everything you said. Kate is my favorite also, think someone on another post stated "Kate's my first love" and I have to say I share that sentiment!! All the children were quite adorable and the two twins did their job very well (very impressed)!! Kate did look radiant and loved the outfit, it blended very well with her daughter's look and the flowers. She was careful to not stand out and be the focus. In that regard both Kate and William gave sincere and subtle support to Harry and Meghan. This wedding wasn't the time or the place for this sermon. cc

  44. At first I also thought the same dress but after really looking I noticed as others did several differences. The buttons on the sleeves and the darts at the bustline. The white dress was very fitted and there is no way it could have been let out to fit around her middle. Kate has had dresses redone in a different color, I think that is what she did here. So appropriate of her trying to not draw any attention to herself on Meghan’s big day. I thought she looked a bit tired. As a mother of 3 month old twins and my 3 year old being ring bearer in my sisterinlaw’s wedding I can appreciate the effort it took to get everyone ready. And that wasn’t with the pressure of being in front of billions of people!

  45. My guess about the last minute outfit is that Kate hasn't lost the post-baby weight as quickly as she expected so she decided on this old and comfortable outfit. But the hasty arrangement seems to go down to the detail that up close in HD pictures Kate doesn't even appear to be wearing stockings. You can see the bulges in her feet way more than usual. She also looked rather tired during the ceremony. But it was lovely how she refused to be in the spotlight. It's Meghan and Harry's day and Kate was just there as a family member. I loved that.

  46. Another fabulous post Charlotte! I have just a few comments today and they are not meant to critical in any way. I want to start with a question about William, why does he have the gold cords on his uniform but Harry does not (he had them at William’s wedding)?

The children were so precious and is it me or does Charlotte look even more grown up yesterday than she did when Louis was born? I love that the moms were the ones escorting the bridesmaids and pageboys into the church. I thought this was also a nice way to include a few friends.

I loved Kate’s look today. I know it’s white and that’s usually a no-no but I didn’t see a problem with it. Honestly, for as much as I loved the look, Amal Clooney was a little too bright for me, almost distracting. I think Kate’s selection, whether it was her first choice or not, was the perfect combination for me. The Philip Treacy hat was a wonderful addition to complete the look.

I’m hoping for some family photos soon of the Cambridges or even of them with the Sussexes (too tongue twisty for me). I’m confident they spend a lot of time together and share a close bond. I’d love for all of them to share in some relaxed family photos meant to be shared with us. A girl can dream!

    2. Hi Alaina & Caroline,
I wondered the same thing so did a little “research” (maybe in another life I was a librarian or something!) :) It left me feeling glad that I’m not a military historian, that’s for sure! Apparently, there could be a two-part reason for wearing/not wearing the golden ropes (or aiguillettes), which has to do with the timing of the weddings and the rules regarding British military uniforms:
      1. At William’s wedding in 2011, Harry wore the Dismounted Review Order Uniform of the Blues & Royals Regiment. As part of that uniform, campaign honours can be worn - in this case, the Blues & Royals received a campaign battle honour for Afghanistan - which is signified by the aiguillettes. The reason William had no aiguillettes at his own wedding was that he had not been on a military campaign like Harry, and he had not yet been appointed a personal military aide to the Queen. However, once he did receive that appointment in 2013, as long as the Queen is alive, he will always have aiguillettes no matter what uniform he wears.
      2. At his own wedding Harry wore a different uniform: the No. 1 Uniform of the Blues & Royals Regiment. It happens that this uniform does not permit regimental battle honors, and he is not, at this time, a personal military aide to the Queen, therefore, no aiguillettes. (I wonder now if he didn’t make that choice of uniform deliberately, so that it better matched Meghan’s style of gown.)
      Hope this makes sense!

  48. I could not care less that Kate's dress was the shade it was - it's a spring wedding and completely appropriate. What concerned me more was how "off" Kate seemed. I realize she is only about a month from having given birth but in so many of camera cuts to her made me think she was so not happy to be there. At one point, I almost thought Victoria Beckham looked happier than Kate. Again, I realize she might be tired, annoyed if something happened with her original outfit, whatever. I just thought it was unfortunate that she was so noticeably off.

Charlotte is going to be a force to be reckoned with!

Maybe Kate was concerned about her children’s performance entering and exiting the church.

      Delete
    2. My guess is she is tired, concerned about her kids behavior and feeling a bit nostalgic, as this probably reminded of her own wedding and the changes she has gone through from that day till now. She may have also had her last child so it is a day that for her would have had a lot of emotions tied into it. At least for me that would have been my experience on the day. Thrilled for Harry and Meghan, a bit bittersweet about the changing family dynamics, memories of her own happy day etc etc.

    3. Kate was amazing so soon after birth. She was kindness itself, helping with the children, it must have been a long day for her, not forgetting that the day before she was at the rehearsal and William spent the night at the hotel with Harry, leaving her with the children at Windsor. She smiled a lot during the ceremony, kept her countenance during bishop's Curry address. When Camila stiffed a laugh she didn't follow. She was all graciousness, chose a lovely but not distracting dress and William was the perfect supportive brother. I don't know what more she could have done. No wonder she looked tired. Those who wonder what the matter was with her, don't forget she has just had a baby!

now. It is Aunt Meghan. Meghan’s children will be cousins to the third, fourth and fifth in succession to the throne. When her children walk through the galeries in the palaces and castles, they will know those people are their ancestors. When they visit Windsor Castle it will truly be to them a family homestead. I also think Kate was mainly tired. When she was up and moving and active she looked really really happy and smiley. But when she sat down I think the tiredness came over her, which it tends to do when one sits down like that. When you have stuff to do you can keep alert but when you take that breather it all falls over you. Seems like the most likely explanation considering how smiley and supportive she's been to Meghan the past times we've seen them.

I liked this outfit much better than the one which Kate wore for Pippa's wedding, it seemed to me more elegant. I loved the hat. Kate didn't look off to me, just more tired than we are used to seeing which is totally understandable not a whole month post-partum. In addition to checking on the two older kids, she had to think (more or less constantly) about baby Louis and the next breastfeeding time, I suppose. It must have been quite stressful but IMO she managed it very well.
After the wedding, I had to re-watch William and Kate's wedding! 🙂 I don't want to compare them - each was unique and original and I appreciate so many things about both.

I’m going to be in Kate’s position in about 9 weeks. However I’m going to be bringing ALL 3 of my children to our best friends wedding.
My husband is best man and daughter is flower girl. Our son will be a week old and I’m going to be nursing!(my 2nd daughter is 18 months)
For me my thoughts will be : “am I leaking? Are other areas leaking?! Does this dress look ok? Did I bring enough pads? Children are behaving. Time to nurse....Ok focus on the ceremony!”It’s crazy but SO many emotions are going through your mind and body. It’s extremely difficult to keep it under control. It may have been that Kate’s straight face was the only way to keep things under control. And with the media filming you too?! Jeesh talk about MAJOR STRESS overload. And if your children aren’t behaving because they are adjusting to the new baby? It puts me in an exhausted and bad mood.
Something I’m learning with others is to just have grace.(it’s so hard!) Give Victoria Beckham, Grace!(she did look unhappy tho huh?) Give Kate TONS of grace.

  58. I thought the Duchess beamed through the arrival, ceremony and the send off. It perhaps was the combination of being proud of her children -all the kids were super cute--and joy for her brother-in-law and his new bride.

All in all this was just a joyous event all round. I am thrilled that we have another royal wedding to look forward to later this year!

Thanks Charlotte for all you do for royal fans: it is much appreciated. Please know that even though we don't always join in the discussions we always read and reread your posts on both blogs.

    Regards,

    RW.

  59. Ahhh... I was starting to think it was a new coat. The darting looks different & it looks yellow in some photos. There was a pink dress she wore a while back that photographed washed out & many criticized her for having a hat that didn't match--when it actually did!! Some people are SO quick to criticize. I think the pale, pastel yellow was planned & beautifully coordinated with Camilla's pastel pink & Doria's pastel green. Also, the Queen wore bright yellow, so Kate perfectly coordinated without upstaging her or Meghan. It was all part of the plan!

    1. Kate looked wonderful! Her coat was pale yellow, indoors it was clear that it matched her hat. Her dress underneath was paler in color than the coat, which could be seen in the outdoors photos of her with little Charlotte. All this blather online about her trying to upstage the bride is utter nonsense. *cue the eye roll*

    2. I do, too. The pale yellow color of the DOC's coatdress goes beautifully with the bridesmaids crown of flowers and the boquets.

      Delete
    3. I think it was too light. It left too many “she’s wearing white” possibilities open. Darker yellow would have been better.

      Delete
    4. But if it was darker yellow it wouldn't have complimented the Queen's dress as all the other ladies did. If you look at the family photos the queen had the darker, bright color and all of the other ladies had pastel light shades. This was clearly planned out. Even Doria had a dress that was lighter and Blended so well

What an amazing event, I'm still smiling and loving all the photos that are appearing after the wedding! I'm not sure if anyone has commented here on this, but did anyone else notice that when the little flower girls and page boys came down the aisle after the service, neither George and Charlotte appeared not to be with them? I've looked at several photos and can't seem to count 10 little attendants on the return journey! I'm not sure where they went, haha!

I read today that Nanny Maria was a lynch-pin in keeping the little group together, who all behaved amazingly well considering their ages. She apparently consoled the youngest flower girl, who was only two and a bit over-whelmed, before they walked up the aisle behind Meghan. They are calling her the 'child whisperer' or something similar and she was apparently hovering in the wings somewhere, where no-one spotted her. So sweet! I imagine she would have taken charge of the 10 little ones to a separate room while the service was taking place - they said perhaps she had Smarties up her sleeve to bribe them for good behaviour - as children that age could never cope with an hour-long service. I have to say, all of the children were amazing in the grand scheme of things, and brought smiles to so many faces. The twins who held Meghan's veil were incredible. Charlotte seems to be a very confident little lady, while George seems to be a lot more quiet. I wonder what personality little Louis will have, and who looked after him during the ceremony. What a magical day all round!

When the couple and Royal Family were departing the chapel down the aisle, George and Charlotte were both walking hand-in-hand with their parents. They were still in the recessional, just not walking with the other children. I have a feeling Louis was close by, being looked after by a trusted staff member or close friend to Will and Kate. Obviously Nanny Maria had her hands full with ten children. I am sure she had tricks up her sleeve to occupy them during the service. Having been a nanny myself years ago, one becomes very adept at distracting children with activities and toys!

Thanks everyone for explaining where George and Charlotte were, that makes sense as they were joining the RF at the top of the steps to wave Harry and Meghan off. I guess baby Louis must've been close by - you would think anyway.

  61. How lovely to see Kate again. I think this is a new outfit in the classic style that she is clearly very fond of and very appropriate for the wedding understated but lovely. It is clearly a pale yellow and I thought the hat was lovely.
I think the reason that Kate was not the smiling Kate we are all used to was that she did not want to attract attention from the bride it was noticeable that as soon as H & M were in the carriage her face relaxed and the smiles appeared both she and William, who incidentally had also looked serious through out the ceremony, were smiling broadly in the car taking them to the reception.
Little Charlotte didn't let us down chat a lovely character she is and George was shy but good. The bridesmaids were lovely what a pity they weren't all there on the steps to wave the Bride and Groom off.
I hope Kate had a rest between the two functions and was able to enjoy the evening function. I would love to know what dress she wore but I doubt we will.
A nice photo has recently appeared of W & K returning to KP from Windsor on Sunday afternoon William was driving with Kate beside him both wearing shades and looking happy.
I hope she attends Trooping the Colour I know it is assumed she will but I would not regard it as a certainty and I would like her to attend a few other family occasions as I don't think she should fade too far into the background.

  62. I am surprised that people have zeroed in on Kate's (and Camilla's) expressions during the Bishop's sermon. Seriously? He was trying to get a reaction from the audience, that's what a good sermon is about. And Meghan was giggling too. Sometimes it seems that we look for expressions and say "Oh, they are disapproving..." when really our faces are always changing expression. I have some photos from my daughter's wedding (unfortunately they are in her video or I would expunge them) where I look exhausted, disapproving, etc.... Well, yes I was exhausted but because I was exhausted my face is fallen and tired. Imagine, as Rachel said above, getting up in the night with your one month old to feed, imagine having had to put your excited 3 year old to bed the night before being bombarded with questions (will Auntie Meghan have a fairy princess dress, will Gan Gan be there, is my dress pretty, why isn't Daddy here tonight....) and then get up early, get 3 year old and 4 year old (George: why do I have to wear that coat, it's hot!) ready, yourself ready, feed one month old, know that all eyes are going to be on you and how not only your kids behave but how you behave. And you can't even resort to a couple of shots of whiskey to bolster yourself up because you are breastfeeding!

    1. Jo, I respectfully disagree. It’s okay people noticed the reactions of *some* of the royals. The minister was trying to get a reaction- of passion for Christ, or thought- not be laughed at as it appeared Camilla, Will, Kate, and Beatrice were doing. Meghan and Harry were not smirking in the way the others were and neither was the Queen. I wish we could have seen Charles. We do need to practice empathy but we also need to deal in reality. The message this behaviour sent was not a positive one. And it’s ok for people to recognize that. Watching the video it’s clear it is in reaction to the minister, not an isolated photo.

    2. 🌸 I agree, 20:22. I have studied the video more than once in detail. The reactions were widespread. William and Charles. David Beckham. Zara. Beatrice and Eugenie. Members of the congregation. Even the pastor behind Reverend Curry. And those reactions were not solicited.

    3. Anon 20:22 and Surfer Girl. There is laughing with and laughing at. Given that Bishop Curry has a huge smile on his face through his sermon I choose to believe that it was “with” and not “at.” But you believe what you want to believe.

    4. You need to understand that in Europe we are not accustomed to hear those kind of sermons, I must say it's really weird, I haven't seen it until now, I wouldn't know how to react, really!!

    5. I agree with 20:22. Yes, the preacher went on too long, and ok maybe it was a bit over the top, but not a reason to smirk. The British aristos have always prided themselves on their manners, but this time? No. It did seem ill mannered.

  63. I think Charlotte might be right re: the ring being an older one from years ago. It just seems too huge (like a dinner/cocktail ring) to be something William would buy for her now. I mean, her style seems to be more simple (although not as minimalist as Meghan). IDK, just thinking...

  64. I think Kate's dress was yellow. Perhaps it was dyed or perhaps it was made to look similar to her christening coat dress. Either way, I thought the color suited her. I was surprised to see her in something this understated, since she got a new dress for Pippa's wedding, but realize she was probably working very hard to remain in the background.

I agree with those who were surprised that Kate didn't appear as happy or "on" during the ceremony. But reading others' comments about new moms with other small kids makes sense to me. Even with help, I'm sure she was tired from the events of the week, stressed about George and Charlotte's behavior during the ceremony, wondering about Louis, and perhaps just in a bit of a bad mood as a culmination of it all. I'm not a mom, so I don't know how the body feels one month postpartum, but I'm sure she's still feeling lots of emotions, as well as being a little nostalgic, maybe, thinking of her own wedding.

Becca H, I like it so much that you are not a mum yourself but you can be empathic and imagine how Kate might have felt. I'd bet that the description in your 2nd paragraph is correct in many points. I've been postpartum 3 times and it's everything but the bed of roses, really. Even without the attention of masses of people and photographic lenses.

  65. Oprah changed her look last minute knowing the beige she was going to wear would photograph too white for the occasion. She wore a pink dress instead. I wish Kate had made a similar change to avoid all the white on Meghan’s day confusion. I too thought it was white until I did more reading and thought to compare it to the bridesmaids dresses. Like it or not, white at another’s wedding is still seen as a faux pas. Also, cutting a dress with the exact same pattern that she has worn before was curious and made people think of past times she’d worn it. I think that also takes the focus off Meghan. A simple new dress with more colour, like she did for Pippa’s wedding, would have been far better in my opinion.

    1. And yet the fact that it was publicized that Oprah changed her dress at the last minute just put more focus on Oprah, and not Meghan. Kate hasn’t said a word about her dress, so who was really courting the publicity? I’m not slamming Oprah or Kate, it’s just that people are going to read their own interpretations into everything, so it is what it is. I thought Kate did a nice job blending into the background with the rest of the royals to let the focus be on Meghan, the newest member of the family. I liked the color of Oprah’s dress, but I wasn’t crazy about the dress itself. And I know that Amal Clooney was considered to be one of the best dressed there, but her outfit was very attention pulling to me (but maybe it’s just because I don’t like mustard yellow lol.)

      Delete
    2. 🌸 Anon23. :) Amal seemed almost tipsy when they arrived. If so, I have a feeling she wasn’t the only one. Maybe she was just in awe of being at the wedding.

    3. One had to go to Oprah’s social media to learn about her dress. The casual observer wouldn’t have known about Oprah’s change. But in choosing a pattern similar to the baptism dress and a colour that photographed white, Kate pulled a little focus on the day. I don’t think she meant to but she did.

    4. I think Oprah went on social media about the dress she wore to the wedding because she wanted to thank the Stella McCartney team that worked on it. Apparently, it was very last minute. I don't think she went on social media to get attention.

  68. I don't get all the critics of the RF. They didn't smile, they didn't look at harry and Meghan, they smirked during the sermon, were uninterested, what else?? Can't you see how welcoming, generous and gracious they have been? a reminder, this wedding has been paid in its entirety by them. Not Harry, and certainly not Meghan. Charles has been wonderful and charming towards Meghan and her mother. Kate , 3 weeks postpartum has helped with the children and her nanny was on charge during the ceremony. William was there to support his brother. The Queen and prince Philip were there, prince Philip after his operation, the Queen hosted the reception and lent them her castle, her cars, her tiara, her carriage...what more do you want? I hope Meghan and harry are grateful for everything that has been lavished on them and that their fans consider the whole picture before criticising.

    1. I don’t think paying for the wedding entitles them to appear rude to their guests. It’s okay to notice both the positives and the negatives of the day. Charles did swimmingly AND at times other members appeared as judgemental. Both are true.

    2. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. The RF can have both gracious qualities and flaws

    3. Well said Natacha! It is what families do, come together when someones need is great and they stepped up when it counted! Their graciousness was a wonderful heartfelt gesture and positive shift back to what is most important about this wedding...the celebration of a very important passage in life by the family. Well done Windsors!! cc

    4. All the criticism about the British family smirking during the sermon is ridiculous. You cannot judge what is happening by a picture. You need to look at the video to see what was actually happening. The pastor was really funny and people appropriately smiled and laughed throughout the sermon. Unless you're looking at a video you cannot accurately see what is happening. As for Zara that looked a little rude but look how pregnant she is. She might have just been having some contractions period or some other pains. I remember major sciatica when I was pregnant and had to stand up to alleviate the excruciating pain. I imagine she was quite uncomfortable and that could have been a look of pain she was having but not being allowed to stand up. I'm always surprised at how quick people criticize and how much people criticize when it's not really any right of theirs to criticize anyone.

      Delete
    5. very much agree, Isabella! Anons: In this case, their actions spoke for themselves, belying any impression the camera might give you. And comments such as that they were rude to theirs guests (!) truly appears judgmental. It is also patently unfair and untrue IMO.

  71. While the Charlotte christening coat dress is one of my favourite of Kate's pieces, her look at the wedding disappointed me. I appreciate that she wanted to be understated, and that she has only very recently given birth, but it felt tired or haphazard to me. I was longing to see her in something with a more spring like cut or fabric. Amal Clooney looked divine. But so did so many of the other guests. A floral by Erdem would have been lovely. Something sprightly. At Pippa's wedding, I didn't love the McQueen she wore but she looked so polished and put together and rapturously happy for her sister, but here it was like ho hum, regular appearance at a church for some random service. I think she should have stepped it up a little. I liked this slideshow of guest outfits. Almost all of them would have suited Kate better than what she chose for this particular event. http://www.stylebistro.com/What+Celebrity+Guests+Wore+To+Meghan+Markle+And+Prince+Harry's+Wedding?utm_source=fcbk&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Fcbk-SB-Specials-CA-Desktop-Interest-Celeb-Guests-Royal-Wedding
