The Cambridges in Harry & Meghan's Wedding Portraits & William and Kate Spotted Returning from Windsor!

Good evening, dear readers. We have a couple of post-wedding updates to share regarding the Cambridges. The official wedding portraits, taken by Alexi Lubomirski, were released this afternoon. The family photo featuring the bride and groom with the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, Meghan's mother Doria Ragland, the Cambridges and the page boys and bridesmaids in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle is just fabulous. The mixtures of whites, creams, green and black makes for a striking colour scheme against the vivid backdrop.

A close-up of the Cambridge family. I thought it was arranged incredibly well with Charlotte sitting on Kate's lap.

George and Charlotte featured in a second portrait with the other children in the bridal party. In the back row: Brian Mulroney, Remi Litt, Rylan Litt, Jasper Dyer, Prince George, Ivy Mulroney and John Mulroney. In the front row it's Zalie Warren, Princess Charlotte and Florence van Cutsem. It was delightful to see George so happy and smiling in these photos. I think he's at the age now where he's becoming very aware of the attention and media presence at such events and it can all be a bit overwhelming. He looked like he was having a wonderful time when these were taken.

The photos were taken after the service at St George's Chapel.

You'll recall the Green Drawing Room provided the setting for the Queen's much-loved 90th birthday portrait.

And the third portrait of the happy couple taken on the west steps of Windsor Castle.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were photographed arriving back at Kensington Palace after spending the night at Windsor following the evening reception at Frogmore House.

Guests enjoyed a night of fine dining, dancing and heartfelt speech. William's speech is said to have been packed with funny moments and a touching reference to Diana. Meanwhile, several reports claim George Clooney danced with both the bride and the Duchess of Cambridge. He was in attendance with his wife Amal.

We also know the Duchess received a new piece to add to her jewellery box. The Duchess of Sussex gave her sister-in-law and best friends a bespoke gold bracelet by Zofia Day as a thank you for their help and support during the wedding. I imagine we'll see Kate wearing it one day!

A number of you have been in touch asking when we'll see Kate next; she won't be returning to public duties until the autumn, but she is expected (along with George and Charlotte) at Trooping the Colour on Saturday, 9 June.

  1. After the wedding on Saturday I went back and re-watched Kate and Will's wedding. I can't help but compare the two weddings and not in a bad way. Each of them were beautiful. But the one thing I couldn't help but notice is how older Price Phillip looks now compared to then in 2011. I was so happy to see him recovered from his hip surgery. But it makes me so sad to see the change in him now. Kate and her family were as always beautiful and so gracious in helping make Harry and Meghan's big day perfect. Also her coat does look a lot "creamier" in the photo with Charlotte on her lap.

I thought her dress looks much more yellow in these portraits than in the photos of her in the sunlight from the wedding (though a pale yellow, for sure!).

Love these portraits. I will miss Kate over the leave, but excited we have a few family events and now Meghan to fill in some of the time.

  2. The autumn! That’s a longer maternity leave than previously, no? Maybe not...it just seems so far away considering it’s not even summer yet!

Keep in mind that we seldom see the royals in the summer. 3 months maternity leave takes her close to August which they will probably spend at Amner. So September is realistic. Although she might decide to make an appearance at Garter Monday and/or Ascot and maybe Wimbledon.

Do you think there is any chance we will see Kate at the Garden Party tomorrow that Meghan and Harry will be at? These are such lovely pictures. I just wish baby Louis had been in them. I just love the way Doria and the Queen coordinate with the green drawing room. The bracelet is so pretty and such a nice gesture.

  8. The dress is definitely cream. If it was yellow she wouldn’t have worn it before with a pink hat to Trooping the Colour. My guess is that there was a wardrobe malfunction (maybe the baby was sick on it) and she had to make a last minute switch. I can genuinely think of no other reason she didn’t wear a new outfit.

    1. I was a bit bemused to see Catherine wear cream or nearly cream at the wedding. She rarely puts a foot wrong never mind this foot but I think it was planned for the photos. Watching live on TV the flowers on her hat looked a pale peridot green in some light. My daughter and I had the discussion were they yellow or were they pale green?
So, yes I think the outfits were planned with these photos in mind. There was great attention to detail, except with the Queen! I think she went rogue with her shade of green which I love!

    2. When Kate returns to her duties, we must be on the lookout for a new yellow dress. If we don't see one for a long while, then it must have been irreparably damaged at the last minute.

      Delete
    3. Agree she wouldn't have worn yellow with pink but she wouldn't have worn a yellow hat & accessories with cream. It looks clearly yellow indoors & with Charlotte's "ivory" dress. The darting is different too. It more likely is a yellow replica of her other coat dress.

      Delete
    4. Nope - definitely a new pale primrose dress with subtle tailoring updates. I suspect Kate has several in this style just as she has multiples in other styles.

      Delete
    5. A misstep for sure. I’m sure she didn’t realize it would photograph so pale. I’m not sure repeating the exact style of another dress (minus a few very minor changes) was the way to go either. Although a new dress would have also made a stir. It must be tough for her to get dressed each outing with all these things to consider!

  12. I was worried about the photos because I didn't care for two of the engagement photos - too Hello!-like but these were lovely - that background is wonderful for photos - I prefer it to the red, less staged and more flattering. Everyone looks good and the children are adorable. I wish Camilla hadn't worn pink - it does stand out from the others but that's how it goes. (I suppose cream would have evoked comments - I've been surprised how much.)

I honestly don't see the issue with Kate's coat - I thought wearing a repeat showed great discretion. The day was not about her. If she had worn something very bridal like that lace dress from Ascot it might have been a bit much but there is no rule against wearing cream that I know of. It may be what was most comfortable for her - or what she thought would photograph well with the little bridesmaids and pages and blend in - and it did.

I believe we will see Kate at the Trooping and Wimbledon - and would love to see her at the Garter since it was missed by all last year as I recall but we will see. She did look tired. I'm more surprised that William won't be at the garden party to honour his father's birthday but there will be other celebrations later, no doubt.

I commented before I think she was a bit tired, focused on the kids behavior and I think the wedding was probably very nostalgic for she and William bringing back lots of memories of their own wedding and a real sense of how much their lives have changed. I also think the family dynamics will have changed which is always a bit bittersweet, good but it is a change.

Most of the pictures of Kate, she was smiling. Her and William did have their loving looks to each other.
She did look tired, but we all would to if we just gave birth 3 weeks ago. And had still do feedings at night. William was with Harry in a hotel so he was not there to help her. And then getting ready to next day

    2. She wore flowers in the back of her hair but I wish they had all worn the same floral crown also, I also would have had her carry her own bouquet even if she also took Meghans at the altar, I think she could have managed to carry 2 of them the few steps out the side door. She is only four and might have wanted her own little bouquet, at least I would have at that age. I know this is all minutiae and I am sure the wedding planners have good reasons for the way things were done.

    3. I wondered why Ivy didn't have her own bouquet and thought that it may have been because she was holding hands with 2 children whilst walking up the aisle.

I think it is a remake of the McQueen dress in very pale yellow. Some details of the dress seem a bit different. Buttons on the sleeves, a bit higher waist

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sadiepoo Arizona22 May 2018 at 04:31

Primrose is defined as a soft pale yellow. Evening primrose is a darker brighter yellow. After looking at Catherine in the wedding photos I’m convinced this is a different coat. Her hat looks very yellow in both the interior church photos and these photos. The dress matches that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the confusion arose Sadiepoo because "primrose yellow" is not universally known as a very pale yellow (although some primrose blooms may be pale.) The Pantone color matching and color identification system (based in the US but used globally) show it to be a brighter yellow. McQueen designs sold last yr as primrose yellow are also much brighter than Kate's dress. It was a big color trend last yr & often very bright

    2. How interesting. Pantone Primrose is nothing like the wild primroses we have here in Scotland, which are the same as the English ones. The controversial coat dress is pretty accurately the same colour as the flower, at least when seen indoors.

  22. Having seen Kate in this historic wedding photo, I cannot think that the outfit was anything but the one that she was meant to be wearing. The colour coordination is spring perfect, with pastel colours all coming together to match up with flowers. This was well thought through, and the photo shows it. Kate is not an amateur, neither is she someone who would spoil someone else’s wedding. She is well brought up, kind and incredibly polite. Whilst (nearly?) identical, this outfit is a different hue than the one she has worn previously. It has a light buttermilk shade, which is beautiful. This outfit would never have matched with the pink that she has worn before. My uneducated guess is that it is a style that she feels comfortable in so close after childbirth, and so she ordered another one in this pale buttery shade. Kate is known to repeat styles and she loves a good coat dress, this makes sense in my world 😉.
I would love to know what you all think?

    2. IA. Seeing the wedding photos just confirms what I always believed - the DoC was wearing a new coatdress in pale primrose, in one of her favorite styles. She’s always had multiples in her clothing. The idea that she just randomly plucked out an old dress is hilarious. There would have been a great deal of behind the scenes coordination with the various BRF ladies to ensure their dresses blended harmoniously with the Queen, one another, the MOTB - it’s a well-oiled firm we’re talking about here. Me thinks this whole narrative of Catherine supposedly wearing white (to upstage Meaghan!!) was just media fodder and nastiness.

  23. Happy that we can put the “white/cream or pale yellow” discussion to rest.
As if there was ever a chance those outfits weren’t chosen with this perfect coordination in advance. I don’t believe any of those could have decided to go with something breaking the chain not even in short notice. There most definitely would have been a matching replacement. This is the smooth working PR machine glancing through.
The photos are truly gorgeous and the group shot is beautifuly orchestrated. I think it was a wise decision to have Charlotte sitting on Kate’s lap- it made sure Meghan takes centre stage without having the eye wander.
I think Kate looks great. The last bits of baby weight really make her face so soft and young it is incredible. I love her hat. The hat game was rather underwhelming this time and at least she and two or three others opted for beautiful but elegant creations.
The children look so happy. I said it before, I love George’s little serious face (and he looks adorable in the little uniform) but it is nice to see him relaxed from time to time.
I hope she enjoys the hell out of her maternity leave. There will be a time when she won’t see them as much as normal parents would (provided she will dive into full royal duties- as king’s consort she doesn’t have to).

I agree about the baby weight making her face look better and younger. My entire family commented on how good she looked at the wedding. (Some here say she looked tired and perhaps she did a little - but I wish I looked that good when I'm tired!). I wish she would keep some of the weight on and not get so thin again.

    2. Agree that the outfits are chosen well in advance -- the color coordination in the Green Room is just too good. I have been trying to follow the thread and just have to weigh in that it just HAS TO BE a new suit. Her clothes when she isn't pregnant are pretty fitted usually, and 3 weeks after having a 3rd baby, there is just no way -- even with her amazing figure, and even if they were able to let it out an inch or two. I thought she looked so great, although tired and I wish she could step it up with the jewelry, but I cannot believe she could squeeze into that same suit.

The colours of the dresses blend in beautifully with the dark military uniforms Doria's pale green and Kate's pale yellow against the dark uniforms really compliment each other I wonder whether Kate had been advised on what the Queen & Doria were wearing.
It was lovely seeing Prince George smiling and all the children looked lovely.
Nice to have the surprise photo of W & K arriving back to KP on Sunday afternoon they both looked happy though no doubt tired.
Slightly off topic but next week is George's half term break so I hope they will be able to decamp to Anmer Hall and William has the week off as he has done previously and the Wessex family still do so it is something I very much hope the Cambridge's will be able to do for some time until the children are much older.

If I could take a moment to say that I listened to William’s reading at the Manchester memorial this morning and I was so impressed. It was reported that he stayed 2 hours beyond when the memorial was over. He really is a wonderful speaker and a caring, empathetic royal. Harry always gets the accolades because he’s so relaxed and informal, but William just doesn’t have that luxury. I’m sure William and Kate had a moment during Harry’s wedding where they wished they could have had a more intimate, personal wedding themselves. Their guests included European royalty and politicians and the like, none of whom were invited to Harry’s wedding. I just hope that William doesn’t go the way of Charles and be perceived as detached and uninspiring. There are so many William haters out there already, never missing an opportunity to rag on him about everything – he really is a caring man and he and Kate are a wonderful team in their own right.

    1. I agree and commented before that this wedding must have been mixed emotional event for them. Their lives have changed so much from their own wedding, 3 children, more Royal duties, households to run, no more air ambulance job, a true understanding of what being a Royal day in and day out involves, Meghan is just starting that journey. Plus as you have said the manner in which Kate and William and their kids lives are/will be lead is quite different from how Meghan and Harrys lives will be lived.

Harry has an easier job and he's given more slack. The first borns are often a bit more responsible and William has a formidable future which comes with additional pressure. He is a leader and he and Kate both take their jobs seriously. Three kids can't be easy either!

I would rather see Kate in a semi repeat dress than hat. I LOVED her hat. I think maybe they weren’t aware of how pale the dress would photograph, especially outside. Her hat looked even more beautiful in the official photos. Hat, shoes and jewelry all matched to perfection with pale yellow dress. No way it was a last minute substitute. So she looked gorgeous yet never attempted to upstage the bride.

  33. As a reader of both this blog and the Mad About Meaghan blog, I find it curious that almost all of the comments made to the blog posts for the Duchess of Cambridge, refer to her as "Kate" and sometimes Catherine. Whereas comments on Meghan's blog from Saturday on, almost universally refer to her as the Duchess or Duchess of Sussex and sometimes Meghan. Surely Catherine is deserving of the same respect with being married to Prince William since 2011? It's a small thing but it has really stood out to me when I look at the comments for the posts made on each blog since Saturday.

And for my 2 cents regarding the whole primrose/white kerfuffle, media types seem to relish stirring up dark thoughts and strife and there are also people who are never happy unless they are dragging others down. And color is very subjective, depending on the reference and manufacturer (as an architect I know this first hand). Looking at the formal wedding portraits taken on Saturday, Catherine's dress is clearly 'not' white and instead blends in perfectly to the overall composition of the color theme for the wedding. As another poster commented above, Meghan is (rightly so) the focal point of the photograph and somewhat Harry too because he is in the middle although he is wearing black so tends to be more of a background foil to Meghan .. but the Queen is the next place the eye lands because she is wearing the brightest color of the entire group.

With William and Catherine's wedding photographs being so perfectly framed by the red room and Harry and Meghan's wedding photographs composed to match the green room ... do they decide which room the official wedding portraits will be taken as part of the planning of wedding colors so the wedding party can coordinate? Just curious if anyone knows about that.

It was nice to see Catherine continuing to champion EACH with her support of Children's Hospice Week "Life's Short" too. As others indicated here, I hope we get the opportunity to see the entire family at the upcoming Trooping of the Colour.

    Border Terrier Lover :-)

    1. Hi Border Terrier Lover. Let me chime in with royalfan, I agree. The Duchess of Sussex is a new title. We might soon call her Meg. 😉 We used to call Kate Catherine and Duchess of Cambridge when it was new. Now we feel like we know her 😉 we call her Kate.

    2. This is the Duchess Kate blog, so most commenters follow that name with no disrespect, have done for years. Meghan’s title is brand new, it’s great fun for Americans to use in particular.

  34. Border collie lover, I will respond to your initial question with what I think is a very fair answer. 😊 I believe the references to the Duchess of Sussex has to do with it being a new title for her and people are celebrating it. However, I have noticed other, shall we say, inconsistencies from time to time. Now that both ladies are part of the royal family hopefully things will become more balanced.

Regarding the color of Kate's outfit, all I will say is that she looks lovely and the exact name is a non-issue in my book. 😉

And yes, hoping to see the family for the Trooping of the Colour.....

  35. 🌸 I hope we see Prince Louis on the balcony at the Trooping of the Colors. That will be Meghan’sfirst appearance there also.

    1. SG, I'm not sure I would do that to a newborn LOL. Also, if they did bring the baby it would be like a competition between the Cambridge's and the newly married couple.

    2. 🌸 oh okay. 😉 that does make sense. 🙁

  36. To my eyes, the color of Kate's coat dress appears in the outside photos and the official photos to be ivory. The ivory color contrasts with Charlotte's white dress in the same way it contrasts with George's white shirt in the christening photos. The fabric does look more yellow in the pictures made inside the chapel. In those, I suspect the photographer has made her outfit match its description. I could be wrong of course, but I think this is the Christening/Trooping outfit.

  37. 🌸 Border Terrier Lover. :) I think William and Kate’s were taken in the Throne Room (red room) because he will be King. There are two throne chairs in that room.

  38. Where were all the children during the actual service? It would seem like such a long time in uncomfortable outfits for such young children. Does anyone know where George & Charlotte and the rest of the wedding kiddos were during the service?

  39. 🌸 Trooping the Color would be a good time for Kate to wear the Kensington bracelet she received as a gift from Meghan. It would make it into official photos then and would be a nice acknowledgement of the gift. Plus, I want to see it on. 😉

  40. Charlotte, do we know if Meghan had the gold bracelets engraved for each of the women? The disc just screams out for engraving to me! Especially as a memento for such an important occasion! :)

  41. Are the Mulroney twins identical? Apologies if the answer has already been stated. Little Charlotte's face is changing all the time as she gets older.

    1. It does! Each time we see her she looks different. As George gets older, he simply becomes an older version of himself but Charlotte changes a lot.

  42. Charlotte, good thinking to post these pics. The Duchess of Cambridge will be missed until we see her at “The Trooping” and I guess, sometime in September. Thank you.

  43. There's an interesting forensic analysis of Kate's coat over on What Kate Wore - different shoulders and buttons seems to indicate it is indeed a different coat - those are tailoring differences not likely in alterations. Kate has been known to choose the same style in different colours a number of times before - but it's unusual to have two identical coats in such close hues - perhaps she didn't realise how light the primrose would photograph.

There is no rule on wearing cream to a wedding to my knowledge - but the analysis of the coat has been interesting.

Kate's coat fit in very well in the official photos. Camilla was the odd person out in pink - but I wondered if the Wedgwood green she wore to the garden party was to be her wedding choice - until she found out the mum of the bride was wearing green.

Kate's letter for Hospice Week was very nice.

I rather doubt we'll see Louis at the Trooping but who knows - babies sometimes have been brought out on the balcony.

    1. Maybe we will spot him being held by the Nanny in that window shot they often get of the kids peeking out. Or maybe he comes out and then is taken back in. Would be fun to see all the kids together.

    2. Thank you Julia for the reference to the What Kate Wore article...a very nice analysis. Think Kate put very careful thought into her choice i order that Meghan could be the focus. cc
