It was a surprise appearance for the Duchess, following Prince Louis' christening at the Chapel Royal yesterday.
In December 2015, the Duke of Edinburgh passed his patronage of the RAF Air Cadets to Kate, after 63 years serving as Air Commodore-in-Chief. It seemed incredibly fitting for Kate to be there today, both as a member of the Royal family with an official RAF role and also as a RAF wife.
Prince William is the fourth successive generation of the monarchy to become an RAF pilot. He received his RAF wings from his father at RAF Cranwell in April 2008 after completing an intensive 12 week flying course. During William's time with the RAF, the Cambridges spent several years in Wales.
Her Majesty was also accompanied by The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, The Duke of York, The Earl and Countess of Wessex, The Princess Royal and other Members of the Royal Family.
The Royal Air Force - the world’s first independent air force - was founded on 1 April 1918, independent of the British Army and Royal Navy. For one hundred years the RAF has defended the skies of Britain, preventing conflicts, delivering aid and combating cyber threats while working in partnership with other Services, from Operation Ruman - the UK’s humanitarian assistance operation in the aftermath of hurricane Irma which hit the Caribbean in September 2017, to the RAF’s Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon Aircraft, providing a UK air defence capability 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged as, at the time, the largest air force in the world. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history. In particular, it played a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain. The RAF describe its mission statement as "An agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission" Today the RAF is engaged on some 13 missions across 26 countries and is heavily committed on operations both at home and abroad.
Today we honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Did you know Westminster Abbey has a chapel dedicated to members of the RAF? At the eastern end of the magnificent Lady Chapel built by King Henry VII is a chapel dedicated to the men of the Royal Air Force who died in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940. This chapel received damage from bombs which fell in that year and a hole made in the stonework has been preserved and covered with glass. The Tudor glass in the window had also been blown out at the same time.
In 1922 a stained glass window was unveiled in Westminster Abbey to members of the Royal Flying Corps who died during the war. The theme of the window is flying men and wings, illustrated by passages from the prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel. The inscription reads: To the glory of God and in proud and thankful memory of those members of the British Royal Flying Corps who fell in the Great War 1914-18.
Wing Commander Nikki Thomas, the first ever female RAF Tornado bomber squadron commander, read the poem High Flight by John Gillespie Magee Jr. “Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings...”
Mark Hunt, an Engineer Officer in the RAF for over 20 years, read from The Birth of the Royal Air Force by Richard Overy. “No other fighting power established an independent air force during the war”

To mark its centenary year, special events, activities and other initiatives at local, regional and national levels will run until the end of September.
The royals then watched the "Presentation of Colours" - a ceremony where a regimental unit is given new flags.
During her speech, the Queen said "I remember the Battle of Britain being fought in the skies above us, and we shall never forget the courage and sacrifice of that time."
William and Kate watched the ceremonial events and listened to the Queen's speech.
The centrepiece of RAF100 was a magnificent flypast.
Up to 100 jets, helicopters and aeroplanes soared above London for the rare military celebration. The royals assembled on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to view the outstanding display.

The Evening Standard reports: "The flypast will consist of up to 100 different aircraft of 23 different types, with nearly 200 aircrew from 25 different RAF squadrons. The lightest aircraft will be the 120 TP Prefect at a maximum take-off weight of 1,440kg, and the heaviest will be the C-17 Globemaster III at 265,350kg. The largest aircraft taking part is set to be the Voyager at a length of 58.82 metres and with a wingspan of 60.3 metres. The Typhoon FGR4 is the fastest with a top speed of Mach 1.8, with the slowest being the helicopters."

It seems fitting to include a quote from the historic speech made by Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940, referring to the ongoing efforts of the Royal Air Force crews who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain.
The Duchess accessorised with her Air Cadets Dacre Brooch. The brooch is considered the highest award any female Air Cadet can achieve.
The Duchess sported a hat by milliner Sean Barrett. Mr Barrett's creations featured on Downton Abbey and The Crown. We can also see she wore the Queen's teardrop earrings. Kate's worn them on numerous occasions in recent years.

And it appears Kate's clutch is by McQueen.
We should see the christening portraits at some point this week, it's also possible the Duchess will attend Wimbledon!

DeleteI don’t think so, because they appear to be three different sizes. The first for her “normal” size, the second bigger in the bodice and waist for post-partum, and the third is just larger on top as she seems to be still breastfeeding. There’s nothing in that first dress that could be let out.

DeleteI'm not convinced the pink dress was dyed turquoise. I think the pink dress would have turned out a weird shade of purple if dyed with blue-green dye.
I remember that dress, the teal Emilia Wickstead (very clumsy design from a designer who criticises another), but we never really had any confirmation that it was dyed. Of course I stand corrected if anybody knows for sure. Frankly, I don't think so. I guess it is a new one.

DeleteI doubt any of Kate's different color "copies" have been dyed. I think they are multiple bespoke outfits made in different colors. (Kate wore the teal blue and pink EW's before we knew of her proclivity to wear the exact same design in different colors making the question of dyeing reasonable.) These days it is hard to find "pure" fabric made without some synthetic content. While synthetics can be dyed, results often are unpredictable even for professionals. Often multiple dye baths are required which can cause wear/pilling. Higher heat methods may be needed to get synthetics to "take" resulting in shrinkage. Finally, if a garment is sewn with polyester thread as many garments are, the thread may not take the dye or at least may not take it in the same way as the fabric. I agree Kate would have access to the super-experts but even so, I suspect dyeing entire outfits that weren't designed to be dyed would be more trouble than it's worth. And if we throw in things like making sleeves shorter, it really makes more sense for someone with (essentially) an unlimited budget who has access to the original designer to simply have a new garment made!

I know some people wont like it but I'm totally OK with her having some safe go-to pieces that she can use for decades if she wants to. And especially now. I think she went to McQueen and said "I need 4 coats/dresses this summer that I know I will like and will fit me after the baby. What do you got?". And then she didn't have to worry more about that. Seems quite sensible to me. And she's not sparing on the jewels! That brooch is so hillariously big but it makes sense to wear to this occation and she wears it as well as anyone could. And then the big real royal earrings. Full on future-queen mode. I approve!
I hear you Rebecca! I think that’s reasonable, Kate has three small children, just given birth and she looks AMAZING. Kate has nothing to prove to herself and others. Why not just tick the box ✅ with her favourite fashion choices and be done with it! Well done I say.

ReplyDeleteI think she likes fashion at times, kind of goes up and down. I think she likes putting together an outfit here and there, or more likely likes buying a pretty thing. But I don't think it's as high up in her priorities as some would hope, and especially not right now with a small baby. She always dresses appropriately and pretty, and that is all that is needed in her job. People wishing more is on them and not on her, I would say.
DeleteI am sorry Beth but I must respectfully disagree, a woman who orders the same type of clothes in every colour of the rainbow, loves shopping (she was seen out and about many times), and has a wardrobe she has does not hate shopping. She loves it but not very good at it. She should have a professional help because it is out of common sense now. I could totally accept she needs new because of the baby weight. But her past shows us otherwise. Just go and look for the amount of same clothes, it is not rare in her book. I can't regard it anything else but a waste.

I feel here Julia has a point with “comparing” the two Duchesses and I don’t think that we can assume that Kate’s fashion choices don’t have anything to do with her new sister-in-law. I think it is great that Kate is so comfortable with her own fashion choices as to not care what other people think or say about it-and having had a third baby myself recently, I can just imagine that having a couple of coats that you feel good in would take the stress out of attending these events. I would hate to have to appear in public as she does and be scrutinized while on maternity leave-I think we should allow her time and space to make her family a priority right now!

She did it with her jeggings & striped shirt/blazer and therefore became known as her "uniform" because of it's frequency, she's done it with her hair, and she did it w/ her Sledge pumps & wedges. She needs to be careful because that's what HM does. Being comfortable w/something is understandable, but the same thing over and over and over turns into a rut. In fact, she's such a creature of habit that when she changes something, it stands out (like her shorter hair cut this past year or the chunky block shoes or big white tote bag). That said, she's always very pretty and appropriate for sure. Just something I've noticed about her for a while now.

DeleteWhat is wrong with a uniform? Many people wear the same style of business clothes to work each day if their lives. And goodness knows, Prince William and Prince Harry almost always repeat their suit style/color (blue suits!) each day they are working. To find ones work style and to be comfortable with it and to not have to splash out on a expensive trendy (another word for tacky!) outfit each time one appears on-the-job is a sign of class and position - she is regal to the core.

As someone with conservative royal tastes I'm fine with this. And most of all, I'm thrilled Kate attended. I was hoping very much she would. The hat is lovely and the coat is well-designed for that brooch.
ReplyDeleteMeghan is a trifle Angelina Jolie in this outfit for my conservative royal tastes but she does look lovely as do all the other royal ladies. Not quite sure about those chevrons on Sophie's dress but the fit is excellent. Camilla is a clone of yesterday. Anne is dashing in a 1980's way - it's like fashion stopped for her in 1984 - but she always does look good.
A very nice appearance by the family - but I do miss Philip who would seem to belong at this event particularly. I hope he is well and do understand why long services would be difficult for him. It's just it doesn't seem quite right to see the queen without him.

DeleteWe all miss Prince Philip and I dare say so does the Queen. You know, if he were willing to sit in a wheelchair he'd likely be able to attend so many more functions. Yes, it could well be too long for him to stand on the balcony, after hip replacement, but in a seated position, he might be fine. I think Philip is a man of great pride. He walked into the recent wedding with no cane or walker. I've known people 30 years younger than he is, who use a walker for the first year after a hip replacement and then a cane going forward. So…and this is just my guess…Philip would prefer to be absent, rather than be seen as weak and feeble.
DeleteIt actually seemed that Prince Philip’s place was left open. Meghan remained behind where he usually stood, while Kate moved, and evidently reminded William to move, to the right. That also made Harry and Meghan visible, but I wonder if Kate was thinking of Philip, who resigned his patronage of the cadets for her to take over.
DeleteJulia, I agree the coat fits the brooch perfectly. This brooch (stunning as it is) would overwhelm most outfits. The brooch represents Kate’s military role - it should be the focus. Also, the hat is divine. I saw how wonderful Kate looked at the christening yesterday and hoped we’d see her today especially given her air cadet role inherited from Phillip. He was missed today.
DeleteI do not think that Prince Philip is not attending events because he does not want to appear feeble - he was seen last month carriage driving! I think that after so many years working for the firm he is enjoying his retirement. When he openly retired from working events last year he meant it. He has spent a lifetime working - longer than the majority of working people out there and when he retired he meant it. Unfortunately for the Queen her position is for life, she was chosen by God for the role (according to royal tradition, not my wording), was sealed and anointed and is the Queen until her ( God forbid) death.
DeleteTrue, but Windsor is small and if Philip feels tired - or even needs the loo, he can get back quickly and unobtrusively. A service is far more trying. He cares a lot about the forces, so I tend to think he might have thought it was too much.
DeleteMy late beloved-beyond-anything dad was the same. He was quite happy going out perhaps for an errand or a walk close to home - but long services for family and close friends were difficult for him - the long sitting especially.

I think she looks very elegant, and I can see the attraction for her of adopting a sort of uniform for these events. I think she likes clothes but doesn’t want to come across as too superficial or profligate, while at the same time looking worthy of her status. It’s a very tricky balance. But all the coats in this pattern pull/pucker at the front of the waist, whatever her weight, and it REALLY bugs me. Surely that could be addressed? It spoils the silhouette so much.
ReplyDeleteYes, when is McQueen going to learn to put a fastener at the waist?? Some of Kate’s coat dresses during her slimmest years had the same problem. Otherwise, I have always liked this design on Kate, though it does seem repititious now. The winged collar is certainly appropriate for the RAF and for the huge brooch. Kate looks lovely, though very tired. She made a special effort, and I hope she goes home for a nap after the balcony appearance, which is also lengthy, given 100 planes in the flypast.
DeleteJo G-- I noticed that too. It could be a problem with the placement of a hidden hook and eye at the waistline. But it looks mostly like the hidden button and buttonhole aren't lined up properly with the buttonhole being just the tiniest bit too high. It is odd to see the exact same pucker on every McQueen dress of this style Kate wears. And it seems it could be fixed by moving 1-2 buttons (& avoided on any future dresses by putting the buttonholes in the right place to start with!) I'm constantly surprised though at some of the "fit and finish" issues seen in pricey bespoke designer clothes. Mismatched seams, uneven collars, strange placement of large pattern motifs...my old home-ec teacher would definitely take off grade points!

ReplyDeleteI think Kate is wearing marriage and motherhood with beauty and maturity. She will be a most regal queen consort. She has obviously found a dress silhouette she loves, and suits her. It is a style we now identify with her. I don't expect to see some new style detail every time she is out on an engagement, or to show up with each new trend. It appears to me that both Kate and Meghan enjoy fashion, but I shouldn't think that they would want it to be the dominant focus over the purposes of their appearances.
ReplyDeleteAgree with all of this. Especially not expecting every event to be something new. It's OK to have a uniform, and it's not like she ONLY sticks to the uniform. She knows what she likes and look good in and sometimes when she feels like playing a bit more with fashion she does. This is her job, most people don't change up their look all the time, not even celebrities.

DeleteI am so glad she came—it was probably the most important Forces anniversary. I don’t care what she is wearing, the fact is she attended, she wore the brooch. I know I am not English but I heard enough from my English friends’ parents and the Canadians who flew during WW2 to understand how important “the few” were. And how young and terribly unprepared they were. So today should be about them and their legacy. That Kate came when she wasn’t expected to means a lot to me. Again, I personally don’t care what she wears, I am not about the fashion but about the substance of these wonderful history lessons you give us Charlotte, I just want her and William to be happy and keep on with their loving family.

I know it’s the same style as previous dresses but my guess would be it’s a style that flatters her AND can be easily taken in as she continues to lose baby weight. Love that she wore her RAF broach!

I also have 3 small children and to try and think of fashion choices on top of that...!!!! .I understand she has help, but I think I would also stick to something I look and more importantly feel good in. And I feel she should be entitled to put all of her extra energy into her family if that makes her happy...and who are we to say she’s boring? I think she always looks elegant and classy!
DeleteI'm going to echo what many have said already. The fact that Kate appeared today was such a lovely surprise. And she wore her RAF badge with pride. Giving it front and centre on her pale blue dress ! Bravo Kate ! Anything other than today's ensemble would have been a little to ostentatious for my liking. If we're looking for a clothes horse, we should look to celebrities and alike, rather than a member of the BRF.

DeleteKate's found something that works for a certain type of occasion and for her post-baby body (terrific as it is!). It's safe and appropriate, and pretty (I like it in blue). This is not the time or occasion for making a fashion statement or competing with her sister-in-law. Besides, I actually don't see Meghan breaking any royal "rules," which don't exist to the extent I think most people think they do. Anyway, I don't think it's that she doesn't care about fashion any more (I always felt that she didn't care about it all that much to begin with), but more that she's got three kids under 5 and she doesn't have the time or energy to make it a top priority at this point in her life.

Julia @ 12:09, the Duchess of Sussex is not making the “event about her outfit”. Unfortunately, that’s what the media does and some blogs. Thanks to Charlotte, this blog is about more than just fashion; there is a lot of history here. Also, the Duchess of Sussex has not broken any OFFICIAL Royal protocols. Again, that is the media feeding that info. The Duchess of Cambridge gave us good advice, “don’t believe everything you read”. The Duchess of Sussex is dressing for the event just like all the Royal ladies are doing. All the ladies look lovely. The Duchess of Sussex is in her first attendance at this Service and would be heavily critiqued no matter what she wore, unfortunately. I encourage her to keep learning her new role and continue to be passionate and compassionate about charities that make life better for all people. To me, that’s what’s most important about being a Royal. Thanks again, Charlotte.

Yes, anything to pick at. Meghan has her aides, the Queen, Kate, Harry, etc. to let her know if she does anything "wrong." I suspect she has done nothing wrong other than not being Kate. I was going to say that Kate probably enjoys having a "new girl" so she can rest some, but the family seems to be a close and loving family. Luckily for Meghan, her new family is supportive and appreciative. Kate has seemed to be an extremely nice person and no doubt loves Harry and now Meghan. I think it's all good in the family where it counts.

She looks lovely! You know...as I sit here with my 3 small children, I can’t help but see the “mother” in her shining out more and more as she gets older. I see her sitting there thinking “I’m so tired. I’d give anything for some chocolate cake and a nap.” ...or... “I’m due to feed George. Let’s hurry this along or I’m gonna have to pump soon” during a random speech. Hahaha!! I adore seeing her through motherhood as I’ve had my children right along with her. I had twins in April 2013 and another March 2015. It’s been full of sleepless nights but my oh my it’s the most glorious thing in the world. She does it with grace being in the public eye. I’m a hot mess. ;)) Cheers!!!

DeleteI was so happy to see DoC at the service in her role as the wife of an Officer and patron of the RAF Cadets. I’m glad she chose blue, which is the color of RAF dress uniforms. I heard stories from my uncles and father-in-law about the dedicated men who served in the RAF in WWII. One of my younger uncles served in Korea and was based out of an RAF field. He had so much respect for the RAF. The RAF was formed during WW I, the USAF was formed after WWII, combing Naval and Army pilots. Thank you Charlotte for your research. I really appreciated the stained glass window included in your report. It must have been exciting to see the flyby if you live in London today.
ReplyDeleteI was so pleased to see that Kate attended such an important event! The RAF has played such a big part in her life, her husband’s life, and in the country she lives in and represents on behalf of HM, so I saw it as rather fitting that she go.
ReplyDeleteMaybe in this time of her third post baby body, she’s found something she’s comfortable in, feels pretty in, and wants to wear this style often. I won’t begrudge her that. The lapel is perfect for that massive brooch, the diamond earrings are great, and I love the hat. All around, a win today.
Yay! A brooch! So happy to see that. Also Love the hat and clutch....a little underwhelmed to see another version of this dress. Yes, it’s a beautiful dress...but I’d selfishly like to see something new. If she wanted to have this dress made up in multiple colours, I would have opted for more variety. Not just various shades of light pastel. This would be beautiful in many different colours. Maybe some brights? In my opinion anyways.

DeleteThe first McQueen coat dress was lovely, and the second so similar there was loads of confusion as to whether she'd worn a repeated outfit to Harry's wedding! Now a third (which at least we can see is a different colour!) I'm bored with the style now .....

She "wows" us when the event calls for her to take center stage and she wears predictable when the focus is on the charity, cause or to take focus off her. We don't converse of the Queen's style; we focus on her work. It takes confidence to wear a "uniform" in today's world. It works for the Queen, fashion designers, top business executives, royal men -- why not her?
DeletePerhaps this coat was originally designed for nursing a baby (Charlotte), and it still works well if Kate needs to sit down with Louis between events. The Trooping dress was beautiful. But Kate would have to remove it to take care of a nursing baby. Of course, the original coat was worn at other times. But a return to the same style might reflect its usefulness - and in this case its wings.

It's nice to see Kate again. I think she will attend Wimbledon, so participating in the RAF ceremony was the right choice (although I'm not suggesting this was calculated for PR purposes). Kate's look is spot on, and I'm not bothered by the repeated style.
ReplyDeleteI missed commenting on the previous post, so I'll put my thoughts here. Kate looked lovely. Louis, if your mother's joyful expression is any indication, I would say you're her favorite. ;) Kate looked entirely besotted with her younger son, who is a beautiful baby. Charlotte is looking more and more like Kate, and George has always reminded me of Michael Middleton. Carole looked very polished, Michael was dashing as always, Camilla looked very nice, Meghan looked lovely, and why can't Pippa get it right?
I do wish William would work on his resting face. It's default look is "peeved", and I find myself irritated when I see it. (I realize this is my issue.) However, William appears to be a very loving and engaged father and husband, which reflects positively on his character. I'll try to remember this.
Everyone in the balcony photo is having a good laugh except Harry, who does not look amused. Perhaps William made a joke at his expense.
KimK, I thought the same thing about the balcony laugh photo!! its harry who looks peeved in that one. Maybe William is not generally the funny one? He does look pleased with himself and they all look so great smiling and laughing and all looking at william.
DeleteSo Kate has basically worn the same dress for every event after giving birth to Louis. That's fine -- I think it's a very "Kate thing" to find something she likes and then wear it in 50 different shades for 100 different occasions. I mean remember the identical lace dresses?
ReplyDeleteWhat I find a bit disturbing about Kate today is how tired she looks. In many of the pictures she has a smile that doesn't quite reach the eyes. I know she's the mother of three young kids but I hope she's just tired and that there's not more going on.

DeleteIvy, I think yesterday was a really big day for her. Not only was it the Christening, but they hosted a reception afterwards. I'm sure the kiddos were hyped up and got to bed late (the service was at 4pm). I'm sure she spent the first half of yesterday getting everyone ready, including herself- I would be exhausted after all that- no matter how much help I had at home/from staff. And then to do it all again this morning!

A really nice surprise to see Kate today, although I always thought it a bit odd that she wasn't due to attend. As the wife of an RAF pilot and as Patron of the Air Cadets, this seemed to me like an event she really should attend, even in the middle of her maternity leave. I'm so glad she did. I'm also pleased that Prince George and Princess Charlotte were there to see the flypast. I wondered whether they might appear on the balcony, but I'm pleased they didn't miss it altogether - this was the biggest and most impressive display for some time and I can only imagine George's disappointment if he hadn't seen it.

I do think the colour is pretty and the lapels are great for that brooch, but her McQueen pieces seem to be getting very samey of late. To be honest, if she likes this style so much I'm not sure why she couldn't just have re-worn the one she wore to the wedding - it would have been perfectly appropriate.
One thing I did wonder about, and I wonder if you know the answer Charlotte, is why were Princes Harry, Andrew and Edward wearing RAF uniforms today when Harry was in the Army, Andrew in the Navy and Edward in the Royal Marines? To the best of my knowledge, none of them served in the RAF except Prince William.
You know, Helen, in an early announcement of the service and flypast back in June, Kate WAS listed as attending. Then about a week later, her name was left off the list in the media. Some things we will never know.
DeleteHelen, You are correct. Harry was in the army and was never officially in the RAF, but he was an Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington - the home of the RAF Regiment. He marked this at the 100-year anniversary of the RAF on July 10 by wearing a No 1 RAF uniform, with RAF Regiment shoulder flashes. So I'd say that the others in RAF uniform have similar honorary titles and wore their uniform for this celebration of all things RAF.
DeleteAccording to Wikipedia (not always reliable I know), Prince Edward is an honorary air commodore of the Royal Air Force Waddington. Prince Andrew is an honorary air commodore of the Royal Air Force Lossiemouth. Prince Harry (again from Wikipedia so who knows) is an honorary air commandant for RAF Honington. Maybe their is a significant difference between air commodore and commandant? That explains why Andrew and Edward were in RAF uniforms but not Harry. Hope this helps.

Seems Kate has found her signature style, is upping her jewelry game, wearing statement jewelry pieces and opting for simpler silhouettes, which by the way actually makes the focus the brooch in this instance. Her look this summer has been one of classic muted elegance and has found her own balance between fashion and her role. But most importantly, she is present!!! The one thing I absolutely cannot stand are her matronly updo's! Why has this been her go-to hairstyle for the past several months? They age her so drastically and are not flattering! If Kate truly likes them and the way they make her look, then great. They're just not to my taste AT ALL.
I agree about the low chignons. They just don't look good on her. There are a number of up-dos that wouldn't drag the contours of her face down so much.

ReplyDeleteI was hoping she would surprise us today - with her role with the air cadets and the early days of her marriage as a full time RAF wife, it seemed only fitting that she was there. I don’t believe she ever had any intention of not attending, I think with her maternity leave, she’s just not announcing when she will be out and about.
I don't think we will ever see Kate being a clothes horse and that is okay! As a future queen she would not ever want to step into Diana territory and start overshadowing everyone else with her clothes. I loved Diana but as her son William has stated..."she was complicated." I personally am very glad that Kate is doing Kate! Love her all the more for that!

DeleteI think you’re so right - I never thought about it before but Diana did so often overshadow events with her clothes - smart move on Kate’s part. That said, I’m so over this dress! I didn’t like it the first time around with the oversized lapels and weird pucker at the waistline, and I still don’t see the version worn to the wedding as primrose yellow. But the blue makes sense for an RAF event, so I think she planned to attend all along. Love that gorgeous hat but I think pale gray shoes would have been far better. That praline colour doesn’t go with much. The updo is so elegant and the earrings are fabulous- far better than the the cauliflower pearls of yesterday!
DeleteInterestingly, Diana also wore coatdresses clearly made from the same pattern (she also frequently wore repeats and remakes.) But hers had a little more variation in materials and style - one might be double-breasted, the next not - one was in tartan and one in pinstripes. So they didn't seem quite so similar.
DeleteWhilst we think about Diana's clothes,they weren't always that remarkable - and she wore many fairly simple suits. I think it was actually a certain elusive magic she had that drew attention. I've not seen it since.
I agree, Julia. Furthermore, her particular brand of elegance and compassion will always remain unique (which is probably why I always felt that Kate would've been better off without the "burden" and the memories of that ring, which quickly led everyone into the land of making unfair comparisons).

ReplyDeleteHelen @ 16:04. The “Telegraph” reports that the Royals chose to wear the No 1 RAF uniform to the service. A No 1 is a Service Dress Uniform is my understanding. I’m from the USA so if I’m interpreting what I have read incorrectly, please correct me.
ReplyDeleteI think she looks wonderful, Gorgeous color and collar to highlight the brooch. The hat and purse are really wonderful. I think she has used this style as it is cut for her post pregnancy figure. She can order it up, have faith it will work for her body and be comfortable without involving her in additional fittings etc, or at least minimal. Looks like she did have the sleeves shortened a bit on this version. I also suspect she does not think she will ever use these pieces again so it is probably not very expensive to have made up at this point. I agree I could move on from the style at this point and am assuming we will not see it again:). Fun to see the kids and the Nanny in the window.

ReplyDeleteAs I sit here holding my napping 4-month-old while wearing a nursing tank-top and sweats, I heartily commend the duchess for just getting out of the house wearing matching shoes! She looks fabulous. If sweet Louis is anything like my kids, Katherine is probably up nursing him at least twice a night at this stage, and some nights several more times. Getting back to work is not easy for anyone, and she is handling it with grace. And in my opinion it's a testament to her dedication to the RAF that she let the broach shine above all else in her sartorial choices today.

DeleteAll of the chatter regarding Kate’s repeat or replica of prior outfits is completely ridiculous! To say that she doesn’t like fashion bc she has repeated some coats in different colors is a bit harsh and quick to judge. Let’s widen our scope here. She is the mother and wife of future monarchs. She has a big job both publically and privately. I’m sure this is a particularly busy and tiring time for her with a newborn and 3 children under the age of 4 (almost 5). If she needs to get McQueen to throw a few outfits together to get her through then so be it. She looks as beautiful as ever. I don’t think her fashion “rut” will last long but view it from the context of her life. Probably not top priority at the moment and it’s not much different than a repeat outfits which she does all the time. Speaking as a mom I had a “uniform” until my daughter was older. Those kids just take so much out of you! It’s just a phase! She will get back into her groove soon.

I think Kate looked beautiful and elegant as always. When I was looking at her dress on my phone, it looked simple but having seen more pictures on my computer, the cut and color are beautiful. I hate to see her criticized for wearing similar outfits or hairstyles. She is not a model or an actress. She should not be required to create entirely different looks every time she leaves the house to please the public. It appears Kate does have her go to "uniform" for these engagements and why not? William and Harry can wear the same suits without controversy. I appreciate that Kate's conservative look does not take attention away from such an important event. When Kate used to wear her hair long and down her shoulders, people complained that her hair was in her face and now there are complaints about her hair being in a polished up do. Ultimately, the most important thing is that Kate likes and feels comfortable in whatever she is wearing.

Kate looks lovely but why is she wearing the same coat over and over again? She has so many beautiful outfits in her wardrobe that have only been worn once. This is not a cheap repeat, this is McQueen . Why would you have the same coat in different colors and wear it all the time ? Maybe save it for an event next year. Yesterday I thought she was being very royal and regal, today I just can’t understand it. She has a new baby but I have twins and I loved the distraction of choosing outfits and getting dressed up. Her life is not that hectic, she has a nanny, cleaners etc. She is entitled to her maternity leave but I don’t think that explains her very odd fashion choice. Sinead

DeleteAnonymous 20:46. I think the Duchess is a competent and amazing woman. I appreciate that right now fashion is not a top priority and I doubt it will ever be a top priority for Kate. She is very family orientated, to her children, the Middletons and certainly William and his family. They will always come first. If she wants to repeat an outfit or repeat something in a different colour, it is her choice. With her generous clothing budget, like you, I wouldn't be selecting identical outfits in a range of colours, but if it is okay for her, it is okay by me. But I want to endorse the point you raise, that many women around the world have three kids or more, work full time and do the endless tasks that women need to take on to run a home. The vast majority of us do it without any help….no nanny, no cleaning lady, no cook, no laundry service, no secretary, no gardeners, no personal assistants. So often on this blog the commenters go on and on about, "how does she do it, with three little kids, yet look so fabulous". Well she does it because she has staff and many support systems. I take nothing away from Kate. I think she is beautiful outside and inside and an enormous credit to the Royal Family. But there are many super women out there who also deserve enormous credit for raising a family and doing it well, with zero help. Some even do it as single mothers.

That doesn't mean she does not look perfect. And choosing outfits is not a distraction for her, I guess, it is part of her job. And she does it quite well. She obviously put a lot of though in this outfit and she looks exactly how she should.

ReplyDeleteDuring these past two days is the first time I've gotten a sense of Prince Charles's family as a unit. In all family occasions, the queen is front and centre, and Charles always follows behind, so it's the queen's family. At the christening, because the queen was absent, we saw Charles leading "his" family to the chapel. He clearly waited to see that everyone was together before walking to the chapel. I don't think we've seen that sense of family since before he and Diana separated. There also seemed to be a family moment shared behind the queen at Sandringham this past Christmas, and at Trooping the Colour on the balcony. I just find it moving, somehow. You get the sense that his family is complete again.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if this dress is somehow more comfortable or feels more flattering postpartum? The three times she has worn it she has been recovering from having a baby. I don't know if she is nursing or not, but having a dress that would allow her to go somewhere to take care of those needs without too much fuss would be nice too. She looks beautiful and polished and it's a treat to see her on her leave.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw Kate was there (I was looking for Meghan - I love her in a decent hat!) on the first images from the Daily Mail, I was a bit embarrassed at how excited I was! What a lovely outfit - I agree with others that it compliments the brooch beautifully. I only wish she wore some creamy coloured shoes to keep it a 'light' look - and would make her tan pop more. I always grew up being told that your shoes and bag should match, and your hat and gloves should match in colour palette.

ReplyDeleteHaving been out all day I was surprised delighted and relieved to discover that Kate had attended this very moving and important service.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the outfit she wore was appropriate for the occasion and the style was ideal due to the very large brooch which she clearly wanted to display in as prominent as possible manner also wearing those lovely earings helped the balance.
William looked really pleased to have her beside him once again and they had a lovely report with one another both at the service and on the balcony It was also lovely seeing George and Charlotte watching the flypast through the window.
I do think it was a pity that KP managed to give the impression that she would definitely not be attending as there is no doubt that a great many angry comments over that perceived decision were directed at her. I do think KP could have handled it better indicating that her attendance would be up to how she felt on the day which would appear to be the true fact and I am sure would have been more readily accepted.
Not having had the chance to comment on the christening I enjoyed what we did see Kate looked lovely I liked the unusual hat and she clearly loves little Louis. William is very clearly a hands on Father and both G & C were lovely. Charlotte as usual stole but George was also a little more confident.
The choice of godparents showed what a small inner circle of trusted friends Kate has. To have husband and wife being godparents even though for different children Kate's 2 cousins are brother & sister and Hannah Gillingham's husband is the brother of Sophie who is Charlottes godmother is unusual. William's three selections were from different families he clearly has wider selection of trusted friends. However it was good that once again they chose friends as Godparents once again proving all the press speculation,of which there was a lot,total rubbish.
I think it was a sham the Queen did not attend both W & K must have been disappointed when it was announced that the christening would not be until 4.00 pm I thought that would be to enable the Queen to attend as she travels back to BP from Sandringham usually on Monday mornings. It will be interesting to see whether she attends the christening of the Tindalls new baby.
I hope that Kate does attend Wimbledon as it is the 150th anniversary.
I hope Kate attends Wimbledon, also. I’m pretty sure she will! It would be great if we could see her attend with her new sister-in-law, Meghan, just as she did with Pippa after her marriage to William.

I think there is a possibility and more attention will turn to Wimbledon now that football has proved disappointing. (Although they did so well up until now.) It's too bad Andy is out though.
DeleteSo glad Kate made an appearance at this important event. I would’ve been very disappointed if she hadn’t. The crowds & the flypast looked incredible! I so wish I could’ve been amongst it all. Kate’s hat looked gorgeous, as did her outfit, although we’ve seen iterations of it before in various colours. I think this shade of blue is my favourite.

ReplyDeleteOh Joanna, anyone who knows the history of the pilots in WW2 could never forget the Polish pilots! The Imperial War Museum highlights the contribution of the Polish pilots (against very difficult odds) at https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-polish-pilots-who-flew-in-the-battle-of-britain. On this anniversary of the RAF, I would encourage anyone interested in its history to read this part. But this final quote sums it up: "Commander-in-Chief of Fighter Command, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, who once was so reluctant to allow Polish pilots into battle, summarised their contribution in probably the most telling way: 'Had it not been for the magnificent work of the Polish squadrons and their unsurpassed gallantry, I hesitate to say that the outcome of battle would have been the same'." So, Joanna, thanks to brave Poland and the Polish pilots! And thank you Charlotte for allowing us closet historians a wee place to get sentimental ;)
ReplyDeleteThere was a fictional film - Dark Blue World about a Czech pilot who joins the RAF during the war. It was from 2001 and had Tara Fitzgerald in it. If you can find it, it's worth seeing but have tissues at hand. Lots of tissues. (There's a dog.)

ReplyDelete-She’s a busy mom of three young kids.
-She has a newborn.
-She still has a postpartum body that wouldn’t fit into most of her other wardrobe.
-Once McQueen has made one version of this coat, it wouldn’t be too costly to just have more made in different colors. I would expect she will continue to get back to her pre-baby shape, so there’s no need to spend a lot on clothes for this transition time.
-Shopping with a post-partum body shape is both disheartening and time consuming. She has more important things to do with her time, and it’s hard to find flattering clothes when your body is a different size and shape.
-She was dressed appropriately for the occasion showing class and respect.
-She is a Duchess and a future queen consort, not a fashion icon. I think she takes her fashion cues from the Queen who relies on a basic look with slight variations. When we look back on these photos 20 years from now, we will notice that she looks regal and royal, and no one will care that she wore a similar coat previously.
-She has three kids, one of whom is a newborn. She has other things to do besides find new looks to entertain people (this bears repeating).
I think she enjoys experimenting with fashion for certain occasions or when she has some extra time and feels like trying something new. But I think she relies on her “uniform” because it makes sense to have go-to looks when needed.
It’s a very flattering look on her, and I love the hat. I notice she looks tired, but so do most parents of young kids! Royals are just like us! 😁
I feel like Kate is finally looking like her warm, sunny self again at these last two engagements and it makes me so happy! I thought she had been looking a bit sad or morose in the recent months, but it looks like she's turned a corner! Agree that I wish she would opt for more youthful hairdos and a new coat dress, but I love the hat and overall color scheme on her. Can't wait for her to officially return from maternity leave!
ReplyDeleteMy dad was part of the 8th Air Force stationed in Wendling England who flew bombing missions over Germany, France, and others so I am quite a WW2 history buff. The Battle of Britain was nothing short of AMAZING that the British who were underquipped used their ground intelligence as well as their planes to turn the Germans back. They never again attempted invasion. If you have not seen the movies or documentaries they are well worth a look. Kate looks great but I suspect she is quite tired.

DeletePatricia I, I once lived quite close to where there was an annual Air Show that featured many of the WW2 planes. My friend's parents always disliked the flyover because the sound reminded them of the bombers.
DeleteBeautiful, elegant, and regal, Catherine looks amazing. It seems there isn't a color she can't wear, but light blue seems to especially be 'made' just for her. The collar is a perfect frame for the RAF brooch too.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), and the Duchess of Sussex, will attend the Ladies' Singles Final at the Championships, Wimbledon, on Saturday 14th July.
Prior to the start of play, Their Royal Highnesses will meet a number of former Wimbledon Ladies Champions, as well as some of the Championships' ball boys and ball girls, to hear more about their experiences of the tournament.
The Duchess of Cambridge, Patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), and the Duke of Cambridge, will attend the Gentlemen's Singles Final of the Championships, Wimbledon, on Sunday 15th July.
Seeing that tweet from KP made me very happy. I look forward to seeing both of the Duchesses at Wimbledon on Saturday!
