Kate Talks Feeling Broody & Why She Loves Being a Princess in Ballymena

Day two of the Baron and Baroness of Carrickfergus' visit to Northern Ireland focused on organisations working to create a brighter future for the next generation.

The day began at Hillsborough Castle where they met with members of the Police Service Northern Ireland.

The private meeting saw the couple meet members of the PSNI who have been affected by mental health issues.

They discussed the challenges policing presents and support mechanisms.

A royal source told The Mirror: "William and Kate requested to meet the police officers and the staff at the PSNI to discuss the work being done to provide mental mental support for those in the service. William has spoken candidly about how he was supported during his time as an air ambulance pilot and he was very interested in the concept of sharing of ideas and experiences between all of the emergency services and armed forces so that the best results can be achieved. The Duke and Duchess had some great ideas about how that can work across the country and it's something they are both passionate about."

Chief Constable George Hamilton said "It was lovely that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had asked to meet police officers to get an understanding of the pressure they're under from a wellbeing perspective. I think the staff certainly appreciated the opportunity to talk to Their Royal Highnesses".

From there, William and Kate travelled to Ballymena, a town in Country Antrim.

A very warm welcome awaited the couple with a large crowd cheering as they arrived.

The Duchess greeted locals and thanked them for coming out.

Kate was particularly taken by one little boy named James. She told his Dad Alan: "He's gorgeous. It makes me  broody". Alan laughed and asked "Baby number four?". Kate replied "I think William would be a little worried".

Nine-year-old Hannah Ritchie told Kate she's writing a biography of her for school.

She knelt down and asked Hannah if she had any questions for her. Hannah asked her why she likes being a princess. Kate said meeting "special people like you" much to Hannah's delight. The Duchess added: "I love working with young people. Everyone is so brave and strong in some of the places we go. It's very nice to meet you. Good luck with the biography." Valentine Low captured a video of the meeting.

More from The Telegraph:

'Teacher Susan McKeegan said: "I told her that in literacy we are doing biography, and one of my pupils is doing a biography about her. She asked who the pupil was. I introduced her to Hannah. She very nicely went over and spoke to her, and asked if she had any questions."
Ms McKeegan told the Duchess: "She is going to have a quote direct from you for the biography!" She added: "Hannah was excited, and really hoping she would get a chance to speak to her. She [Kate] was lovely and genuine."

Kate's private secretary Catherine Quinn was by her side.

And longtime protection officer Emma Probert.

A wave from Prince William.

A video from the walkabout.

Their next stop was the Braids Arts Centre.

They visited the charity Cinemagic, who have used film, television and digital technologies to engage with over 500,000 young people.

The charity uses visual arts to increase opportunities and develop skills for young people from all backgrounds.

Cinemagic embraces the magic of film and offers young people the chance to develop real skills, explore opportunities, and reaffirm their belief in what they want to do and their own ability to achieve it. The charity has recently  produced two feature films, A CHRISTMAS STAR and GRACE AND GOLIATH; secured worldwide distribution for both films; developed award-winning “behind the scene” documentaries; produced over 100 short films; and supported hundreds of young trainees to secure work in the film and television industry. Well known patrons that share in its ethos include Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson Saoirse Ronan, Colin Farrell, Suranne Jones, Paula Malcomson and Julian Fellowes.

They watched a brief performance.

A video of the couple participating in an arts and crafts session.

Their final stop was a visit to Ballymena and Little Steps Sure Start.

The programme supports parents with children aged under four years old living in disadvantaged areas in Northern Ireland. William and Kate learned about some of the different programmes that Sure Start provides to understand how the organisation supports parents and provides best practice for early years work.

There was a darling moment when Kate met a little girl in the creche wearing a pink tutu.

She gave Kate a little bunch of daffodils. Tomorrow is St David's Day in Wales, daffodils are traditionally worn to mark the day.

Another photo of the meeting? Definitely :)

During a chat with parents, they discussed parenthood struggles. More from Hello!

'The Duchess of Cambridge bonded with fellow mothers over their parenting experiences during her visit to Ballymena on Thursday. Kate, who is mum to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, chatted to parents at the St Joseph’s SureStart facility, where she praised mothers who had overcome their "struggle" with breastfeeding.
Speaking after the visit, one mum, Rebecca White, said: "They were really encouraging about breastfeeding. They said we were all doing a good job, that it was really hard, it was a struggle and well done for keeping going."
The Duke and Duchess also spoke about the sleep deprivation they experience with their three young children, saying they choose to get up in the night whenever George, Charlotte or Louis wake rather than rely on their staff. Kathryn Ward, a 26-year-old mother-of-two, revealed: "They were chatting a bit about sleep deprivation. Even though they get the help that they have, they’re still parents as well and want to get up with their own kids. So they understand the stresses and pressures were going through, even though they got a couple of people more hands on. They were fantastic. Really on our level."

A video from the final engagement.

Kate hit a stylish note in the lavender blue Mulberry Ashleigh cape coat.

The £1995 lavender blue coat is described as "A reinterpretation of the iconic trench, the full length Ashleigh Coat takes a new look at the trench design, featuring a removable shoulder cape, oversized collar and a belt to cinch the waist." It's been sold out for some time.

The coat is from the Autumn/Winter 2018 Collection.

Several of you noted the coat is reminiscent of several of the designs worn by Emily Blunt in the recent Mary Poppins Returns movie.

And of course the one and only Julie Andrews.

Others noted similarities between the look and the Beauxbatons from Harry Potter.

The Duchess wore a bespoke fitted Jenny Packham dress in rich blue.

A closer look at the belt.

The Duchess wore her navy suede Rupert Sanderson Malory pumps.

Kate carried her Jimmy Choo Celeste clutch in navy.

And accessorised with Diana's sapphire and diamond earrings.

A quick recap of Kate's Northern Ireland wardrobe: Yesterday, the Duchess arrived in her red Carolina Herrera coat and L.K. Bennett boots before quickly changing into the Barbour Longshore Quilted Jacket, Ralph Lauren sweater, and Sweaty Betty x New Balance trainers. Last night, it was a mint green Missoni lurex dress with Kiki McDonough jewellery and Gianvito Rossi pumps and a Mulberry clutch. And today it was Mulberry and Jenny Packham.

And that's a wrap for William and Kate's Northern Ireland visit. The trip encompassed their interests in mental health and working with young people combined with their love of sports and the outdoors. I was delighted to see Dame Mary Peters honoured at the reception last night, it was incredibly fitting for the couple to meet her on the day she was appointed Lady Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by Her Majesty the Queen. Today's walkabout was another highlight with quotes and great interaction. We've seen several historic trips to Northern Ireland in recent years and I've long been hoping to see William and Kate undertake a longer visit there. As the future King and Queen Consort, it's vital they utilize these years to forge links across the UK and Commonwealth. Speaking of which, I do hope we'll see a royal tour for the Cambridges soon. Where would you like to see them visit?

We also have word on engagements for the couple next week:

Tuesday, 5 March - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will join the Queen and members of the royal family for a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the 50th anniversary of the investiture of the Prince of Wales.
Wednesday, 6 March - An away day in Blackpool for the Duke and Duchess. They will first visit Blackpool Tower where they will join a roundtable briefing about the town’s recent history and investments underway. William and Kate will spend time on ‘Comedy Carpet’ on the promenade. From there, it's Blackpool Central Library where they will join two separate discussions focusing on issues and initiatives of particular relevance to each of their ongoing charitable interests. The Duchess will continue her work on early childhood and join people involved in Blackpool’s ‘A Better Start’ programme. Finally, the Duke and Duchess will visit Revoe Park, a recently revamped community garden and park that has been transformed.

What were your highlights of Royal Visit Belfast?

  1. Oooooo, I love her cape coat!

  2. I thought this was her McQueen coat with a cape attached to it πŸ€” But no, it’s Mulberry! I’m undecided on whether I like it or not. Interested to read more about their engagements today.

  3. The dress and the coat are giving me vibes of similar pieces which Kate already owns. The blue dress looks lovely and classic Kate but I'm not so sure about the coat. It's cool that it's different but it's a little too similar to the A.M coat which Kate wore many times before. Unfortunately, I did not like that coat at all and I'm still on the fence about this, something about it looks too busy with the buttons, the collar, the belt AND the cape.

    1. I feel the same way about the coat - too much going on. But loved the dress!

    2. I really like the jacket/cape, and I really like the light blue coat from the earlier tour, but it just feels a little wasteful to me. That said, we're talking about it because it's new, so, that's half the value of it in a way. We'd be bored if it were just a re-wear. So I'm kinda torn, but happy to see her out and about, so whatever!

    3. Exactly, my thoughts. The coat's colour looks great, but it's too much going on it.

  5. I love that they are visiting the Police Services. These unsung heroes are most deserving of some royal attention. As to the outfit...hmmmm. I'm not a fan of the Sherlock Holmes look of the coat and I am surprised to see another coat in this color. As to the dress, is it really new? I immediately thought of the Jenny Packham dress from the Canadian Tour arrival. It's a lovely color but would she really have another that is so similar? Maybe...

    1. They really do deserve some attention & recognition for what they do! I agree that both outfits look very similar to existing pieces in her wardrobe. I like how she wore blue to tie in with meeting the Police Services.

It is a similar silouette to the blue Canadian dress but the color of todays is darker and the details are a bit different.
The style looks great on her and so does the color.

  6. I adore the dress and the coat. The cape detail adds flare and takes the coat up a notch. The Duchess looks beautiful and they both look happy and relaxed yet professional.

Absolutely beautiful! However, If it had been me, I would have been disinclined to buy another royal blue dress so very similar the Jenny Peckham one she wore in Canada in 2016 and again to the Imperial War Museum in October. A navy waist band/belt could easily have been added to give variation. That being said, photographs can be deceiving, this dress may be a different blue that tones better with her fabulous new coat!

    1. I agree. Her massive spending on coats and dresses so similar to the ones she already has in her wardrobe is mind boggling.

I remember reading how Diana was so good at rewearing her items only by giving them a twist. Kate is unable to do that, a stylist would do wonders.

    2. From my observation of the photos and reviewing pass years of Kate’s Blue dresses, this dress is new and made of a Wool Jersey material with long sleeves that is much more warmer for the weather in Ireland for the winter time. The color is a Navy/darker royal blue combo and the style is very similar to many of her dress, that makes it look like she has a dress like this already. I own a fewer jersey wool dresses, they keep you comfortable inside and out in cold weather and it does not wrinkle, a good investment and choice for long outside activities. Kate looks great from head to toe πŸ’™.

      Delete
    3. wooow I thought exactly the same when I saw that dress. It's beautiful but she could just recycled something she already has.

      Delete
    4. I feel like she can't win. She has reworn the JP Canadian dress - to the Imperial War Museum and that was only 3 months ago. It's not like she wore it once. Yes, she has many items that are similar, but who doesn't?
When she recycles, she's boring. When she doesn't, she's wasteful. I sense that we'll see this dress again and who's to say that she doesn't rewear things to the many behind-the-scenes meetings/events that we don't get photos from? Kate rewears items a lot (ie the CH coat yesterday as well as the LK Bennett boots), so I don't think it's necessarily fair to criticize her on this one.
      My two cents.

      Delete
    5. When she recycles, people see it as boring because she does not change one bit, even the same jewellery or bag or shoes. Look at for instance Diana rewearing things, one might have not liked the piece, but at least she tried. I could list a few dresseess/coats those were worn once, and never been seen since.

      Delete
    6. Agree with you Briggs. And I think she did some very good rewear in the last months with really good look twist.

      Silvia

    7. IMO, Kate is very good at rewearing with a twist! I can't remember an outfit that she has repeated without variations of accessories, hair, hats ...

      Delete
    8. JustCallMeMrsDarcy1 March 2019 at 15:35

Oh Briggs please don't tell me off! I wasn't critizing her! I love that she repeats clothes, I often prefer a garment's second or third appearance, including the Canadian blue dress.
I certainly don't believe she's wasteful, she flies the flag for British fashion without being extravagant .
Finally, I was only commenting that this dress was similar, but I did allow that this new dress may have features, unknown to myself, that made it more appropriate for yesterday.

Oh P.S. BlondieBlueEye Eight, it's Northern Ireland, separate country on the same landmass just like Canada and the US xx

    9. JustCallMeMrsDarcy1 March 2019 at 15:43

Oh I forgot, I agree that she does a huge amount of work behind closed doors that we never hear about. It annoys me terribly when people say shes work-shy. Do they really think she just rolls out of bed on the days of public engagements and sits at home twiddling her thumbs the rest of the time? I'm sure she gets the wear of her clothes in private engagements.
The Queen is very clever. She usually wears a plain coat and hat with a patterned dress underneath, If you watch she wears those dresses for engagements in the Palace....investitures etc.
I have the greatest respect for Kate, she's clever and considerate. Beautiful and definitely not boring! And I am in no doubt that she will be one of the best Queen Consorts the UK has ever seen.

    10. @JustCallMeMrsDarcy - sure wasn't telling anyone off :) Maybe criticize was too strong a word and wasn't directed at anyone specifically, just general thoughts. I'm certainly not trying to fight with anyone - we are all entitled to our opinion.

  12. Kate's hair looks so so beautiful for these daytime events. It looks stunning today. I sometimes wish she would keep it the same when she moves onto an evening event on the same day. For example on 13 Feb when she attended the Royal Foundation’s ‘Mental Health in Education’ conference, her hair looked stunning but then she pinned it back (not my favourite look for her) for the evening Women in Finance event. Would have been lovely if she'd kept it loose and flowing for the evening event. Everything about today's look is spot on.

This is my first time to make any comments but have followed this Blog for years now. I am so excited to see William & Kate come for an overnight stay in our beautiful Country Northern Ireland the only downside is that we don’t get to hear about these visits sooner so maybe we could have went to either Belfast are Fermanagh yesterday as I live half way between both places but I did see a helicopter yesterday going very slow maybe it was security for when they were traveling to Fermanagh. Kate looks just beautiful as always the Blue Dress and coat is lovely just what she need for an overcast day today. Charlotte you do an outstanding job Thank You

The cape/coat is nice because it is different but I really hope the cape is detachable otherwise it really dates the coat as 2018/2019.

I have seen several videos of the walkabout-with a dog, with a baby, also Kate being interviewed by a girl. She is fantastic with people, it is her biggest strength. She is natural, warm, genuinely interested and always knows what to say to everyone, from a baby to a 80 year old. Haters may say she is not the best speech deliverer but who cares? It is ok for me if she keeps reading her speeches for the rest of her life as long as she keeps behaving like she does now.

    2. I think it is because she is really interested in them, more than she is in herself. Both sides of the same character trait, not liking to be the center of interest, hence the dislike of public speaking, and believing others are more interesting than herself, hence her genuine interactions.

  31. To be honest, I was very confused at the first glance of the dress and coat because they are so close to other pieces she owns. The blue dress looked like the one she wore to Canada and the coat looked like her AM one. But, on closer glance they do clearly have design elements that make them different. I just wish they had maybe been in different colors so they wouldn’t seem so similar. She does look nice today though. I’m not quite sold on the flappy/cape look.
Regarding the engagements, while my personal interests align more with the causes Meghan will be working with, you can’t deny that Kate is passionate about mental health and children’s wellbeing. The DoC has a way with children, for sure. And they seem to like her a lot in return. :)

However, I do agree with others here, that there's a lot of similarity between her outfit today and others she's worn. These clothes are just soooo similar to past outfits as others have mentioned that even though she looks fine (though I don't think I actually like the coat in totality esp from front, & may only like it when moving and from the side lol) but I just can't get behind her wardrobe choices today. And I hadn't even realized that the cape on her coat is removable until now! She could've just gotten a similar or identical removable cape made for her previously owned and expensive McQueen instead of buying a whole new so similar expensive coat. Changing her previous almost same blue dress to include the new dress's unique attributes would take even less work since it's mostly the belt.

    P. S. Imo its very sweet that when she found out someone was writing a bio on her she sought them out & gave them an opportunity to ask her a question for it. Definitely a thoughtful gesture.

The neckline, sleeve length and blue color are different in today's dress from the Canadian dress. I don't see the problem with two blue dresses.

      Delete
    2. Anglophile, agree, this is actually a very different coat, and I bet in person the color is quite different from other coats, as some else mentioned one often has 5 black trousers or skirts so why not 5 different versions of a blue coat:).

      Delete
    3. I don't see the problem either, except for the similar colour (another shade of blue), those coats are very different, as are the dresses

    4. Rebecca - Sweden1 March 2019 at 21:40

I think the coats are different enough to my eye to be ok buys. The dress I'm more on the fence on. There might be a huge difference in fabric thickness or something I'm not seeing but if I were the buyer I'd stick with adding a belt to her earlier one. But for all we know that one had a stain incident or something. Or she just liked it and wanted a slightly different one. Either way I don't think anyone here is treating it as a hangable offence and I think it is a fair topic to debate as she's a person in the public eye!

Kate and William both look very happy today. Great photos!

Kate already owns a coat and a dress that look exactly like these...I'm not sure why she didn't simply recycle them. I've never been a fan of this shade of blue, but know Kate seems to favor it. I think I'd like the cape element of the coat more if it had more structure and less busy elements elsewhere.

    1. My observation of all the photos today, I feel the same that Kate & William are very happy and put together πŸ’™. Also noticed that William wore mostly all blue too, I like the blue tweed blazer, but the shoes needed to be navy suede, that would have made he appearance complete. They will be doing many more outings together and he needs to invest in more shoes and blazers if going semi-casual. And a fewer more suits for more serious functions. I hope someone that helps pick out outfits for these trips read these suggestions on outfits.

    1. My feeling is even they don’t know yet. There is too much external factors that play a role.
If in a year’s time HM is still alive and going strong I think they might have a fourth child.
However if HM dies there will be a couple of years of chaos in the royal family with the succession, coronation, investiture and probably quite a bit of traveling to the other countries in the realm and I don’t see Kate having another baby in the midst of all that.

      Delete
    2. I really don’t know. I have seen some negative comments from people about how she shouldn’t have another because it’ll just be another long maternity leave for her and it brought up all the “waity, lazy, Katie” comments again. I can’t dictate how many children people should have, nor do I want to, but Kate has been heavily criticized in the past for not doing enough work so I can see where another maternity leave would just add to that criticism. Personally, how Kate decides to do her family life is her and William’s own business, but they do need to realize that if she continues to be at the bottom of the engagement numbers it’s not going to help her any. I know everyone likes quality over quantity, but nobody should always be at the bottom. Just my opinion. That being said, I think she’s probably a great mom and spending time with her children is what they think is best for them, but I think a happy medium can be achieved. Idk, I’m rambling.

      Delete
    3. It is rather silly for people to say that Kate does not do enough work. She is married to Prince William, and at the moment, they have Prince Charles and Camilla above them, C & C are the ones doing the bulk of the work. Usually, the grandchildren of the monarch have lighter loads. OnenWilliam and Catherine are elevated to Prince and Princess of Wales their work load will increase immensely, and when they are King and Queen they will be the hardest working royals. For now, Catherine’s work load is quite busy, and at the same time she has her most important role, mother to three children, one of whom will some day be the monarch.

      Delete
    4. I think some of the comments come from the UK cutting benefits for anything above 2 children and how fortunate the Royals are to not have to worry about things like that. I agree it's their family life, however, since they are public figures, they need to be conscious of the issues facing families in the UK. I don't think having another one would be great for them image-wise, but it's their life at the end of the day.

      Delete
    5. Royal πŸ‘‘ Watcher28 February 2019 at 23:25

The question is: why is there a list at all? If quality was the determining factor, then Kate hits it out of the ballpark. So it doesn’t matter being at the bottom of a list made up of numbers. IMHO

    6. Gosh very brave if she does go for a 4th after suffering HG all her other pregnancies, I couldn't go again.
She looke fabulous again today. I have such admiration for them and the work they are doing.

      Delete
    7. Based on Kate's comment about worrying William, my guess is they are done. He probably doesn't want to see her go through the ordeal of pregnancy again. My suspicion is that this plays a part in why so many of us think she looks entirely happy and confident after returning from her last maternity leave: she may know that their family is complete, be content with three healthy children and ready to face the work ahead.

      Delete
    8. I highly doubt it. I have a feeling Louis was a surprise given the timing. She has rough pregnancies.

    9. With all due respect, if for now, Catherine’s work load is quite busy, I wonder what word you would use with Charles or Anne or the Queen?

    10. bristowmom agree, I think she may be happy to go for another but it is really hard on those who love you to watch you being so sick, I have some experience with this and it is a concern, for those who love you and for your love of others and their stress. So yes I think at least right now three is enough, but after a few more years who knows, or adoption....that is what we did:):)

      Delete
    11. I actually takes Kate’s comment the opposite way. At the moment general concensus is that they are done. I haven’t even seen Kate be “pregnant with twins” in one of the tabloids recently. Kate knew that her comment would open the topic again (like it is doing here), why do that unless you want to keep that option open?
There is a myriad of other comments she could have made, like, “Enjoy him while he is so small, I can’t believe my baby is growing up so quickly” that would not have made it to the front pages of the newspapers.

      Delete
    12. Rachel, I don't think Kate is aware of the general consensus about her potential future children... I don't think she made the remark to pave the way. IMO, she was both being complimentary of the baby and expressing her genuine feeling of loving babies and wishing she had more. Nothing strategic about it. As someone who loves babies myself, and as a mother I know how she feels.

      Delete
    13. I'm on the side that thinks that her new lightness & brightness is her being in a new chapter of her life. She's had 3 healthy babies, survived 3 difficult pregnancies & while she (like many of us) may have had our "broody" moments..... there is a certain lift to one's step when as a Mom, you know you're moving on... So that's where I fall. I hadn't even thought about all they have ahead of them at that terrible time when everyone moves up a rank.... I think she's just really enjoying this time in their life, as it will never be like this again, once they become The Prince & Process of Wales! Yikes! :0

  62. I think that Kate's patronage of early childhood mental health will hopefully produce good results for the society in the future, and a vital area for a future queen consort to champion. It was very pleasant to see Kate and William interact with parents and children, and I think their own parenting experiences are very much brought to bear here. Seems William has been told by his children that crafts is definitely not his strong suit!
Kate looked charming in her blue caped coat. Only someone as statuesque as Kate could carry off so much design, though- cape, flared skirt, belt, buttons!
I was wondering if the Cambridges have done a tour in Africa yet? Or will they be deployed in Europe for their next tour.
I get the impression that Kate loves babies and children, and perhaps would have as many children as she could. Perhaps William isn't on the same page, though. After all, he grew up in the generation where he just had pairs of cousins. It will be interesting to see if she goes the same route as the Queen and have four children.
It's been delightful to watch each couple of the "fab four" do a two day tour one after the other. Each showcased each duke and duchess beautifully. Charles must be really proud of the "team" he will have supporting him in the future, and I should think the queen is nothing but pleased with the 'grands!"
Thanks, Charlotte, for your stellar reports! You've been kept very busy!

    1. As far as we know the Cambridges have not been back to Africa since their engagement. (William has been and they might have been on a private trip that was never announced) so Africa is due a visit. But sadly Africa is low on the list of UK priorities at the moment. My guess is it will ve ine of the countries of the Realm. Possibly the Caribbean Islands.
I also have a feeling that Kate was adamant from the start she is not doing a big tour until Louis is at least a year old. So maybe something around May/early June?

    2. Rachel ZA, I think a tour when the kids are out of school has good possibility. I dont really think Kate's going to want to leave the kids behind for more than a couple of days, and a tour once school's out would allow them to bring the kids, too

    3. It would be an interesting question for W&K. At which point is going along with Mom and Dad on a work trip no longer an enticing way for the kids to spend a holiday?

  63. Kate looked just beautiful! Inside and out.
I am so delighted with the Cambridges continued commitment to shining a light on mental health needs. The recognition of the Police Officers particularly takes my vote. It is an intelligent move on Prince Williams behalf to seek how his lived experience with the Air Ambulance and emergency services can work collaboratively with similar services.

  65. Hmm I remember a few years ago when a girl asked her the same question about what it was like being a princess she answered "My husband takes good care of me." This time her answer was about her, and meeting people, and not just tied to her marriage. I think that's a telling sign of why Kate seems more "confident" now. She no longer defines herself purely by her marriage and station in life.

As for today's outfits, I say yay to the dress and the shoes, but nay on the coat. The cape and boxy fit means that's a whole.lotta.coat. And this is just a general thing ... I wonder why Kate favors coats that have so many buttons. To me all that does is accentuate how long-waisted she is.

  67. How interesting that the sartorial panels Charlotte included at the end of each of the duchesses' tours showed such similar progression of colors. The main difference was the color of the central gown. Meghan wore red, off white gown, and blue. Kate wore red, pale green gown (with praline representing pale orange?), and a similar medium blue. In both cases, there was darker, usually more casual clothing in between, with additional outfits for Meghan because the tour was longer. And of course the climates dictated very different fabric weights. I wonder whether the similarity of colors was deliberate, and whether a patriotic effect was intended.

  68. Forgive my Americanism, but does “broody” mean wanting a child? In context, it seems yes and I definitely know how seeing a baby could make you feel that way. Here, we say “baby fever.”
When I first say the headlines and it said “broody” I thought she was in a bad mood (Americans brood when they are grumpy), but that obviously wasn’t the case. She was so lovely, as always, and I loved that she took the time to chat with the girl about the biography (in a perfectly humble way).

    1. Hi, I am American too & the term broody is used here with poultry. A broody hens wants to hatch eggs and raise chicks. She will sit on her eggs for 21 days, hardly leaving the nest. Certain breeds are known for going broody. They may brood in a nest with no eggs or steal eggs from other chickens & won’t lay any eggs during this time. You have to try several methods to “break” them of their broodiness or you won’t get any eggs. So, when a woman says she’s feeling broody, it’s in reference to wanting another child. :)

    2. @Anonymous: Yes "baby fever" is a good equivalent of what we mean by broody.

    3. Yes it means wanting another baby. I am American but maybe older than you, so knew the term:):). But I have 3 kids and I know for myself that for me when my "baby" got to that 8 to 15 month stage I was emotionally and hormonally really wanting to have another child...I think for many it is a true hormonal biological need that kicks in.

I really love the blue dress. She looked lovely in all her looks...the green dress was my favorite. I’m not sure where I’d like to see them next on a Royal tour...anywhere would be fine with me! My favorites of this was the outdoor sports events and last night when Kate surprised guests by “pulling a pint of Harp.” Looking forward to the 5th and 6th of March :)

  71. I like the blue outfit and loved the cape coat which I myself would like to have! However, my financial head is not happy about yet more new. Agree with all of the above comments about how many other blue coats (approx 28) and dresses Kate has which could have been worn again. I am concerned that the Duchess looks exceptionally thin at present although it is probably just her genes. That aside as a huge supporter of our police services it's great they took time to speak to officers in the police force about their struggles with mh. Definitely a great cause to be highlighted.
As William loves Africa maybe W&K could go on a big tour of Africa - they could follow up on some of the things Princess Diana looked at such as landmines, leprosy and Red Cross work. Kate could look at nursing, health and school projects and William conservation projects out there?

  74. I thought your comment was interesting, Bristowmom. I thought at the time that the way Kate acted with Louis was a bit different from George and Charlotte, almost as if she realized that this was going to be her youngest child, and therefore a very special relationship. And the new confidence when she returned from maternity leave was boosted by the confidence that she had done her duty well as the spouse of a future monarch. I also think that perhaps Kate also mentored Meghan(who said how wonderful Kate had been) a bit, and that also made her realize what a confident and effective member of the royal family she had become. I imagine she always felt secure in her place in the family and as William's wife (both princes clearly make sure that they do everything they can to support their wives), but now she seems secure in her performance of her role. Confident Kate has replaced the rather shy Kate.
I'd also like to mention that William's public speaking is becoming very good. I think he and Meghan are the best two at the moment. Harry is the worst because he always seems to read his entire speech, head down, and rushes through them as though he can't wait to get to the end.

All the main stuff is duplicated in the clothes closets, kids rooms etc. They must either have full time live in help when they aren't there or care takers that check in regularly and then get the house ready for their arrival and close up for them. At Bucklebury I assume they haul most of the stuff back and forth but who knows?

Charlotte what a great post!! Both William and Kate are so natural with people. I love that about them. I recall when the mental health campaign was launched I sort of groaned. Not that I didn't like the idea but how can they tangibly make a difference in this broad area? I must say their consist and tactical approach when choosing their engagements is admirable. They are getting it done. What an asset these 2 are to the BRF!

I've tried to talk myself into liking the coat - I cannot. The combo of the cape and the collar is too much. She can wear just about anything so she looks great.
