It's An Outdoor Adventure With the Scouts for Duchess Kate at Gilwell Park!

The Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Essex this morning to visit Scouts’ headquarters at Gilwell Park.

The Duchess became involved with the Scouts shortly after the royal wedding, when she volunteered with them in Anglesey on a private basis - spending time with the group and hosting a BBQ on the beach for them. Since leaving Wales, the Duchess has carried out several engagements with the organisation. The Duchess was credited with an increase in flexible volunteers, with Scouting Magazine writing that Kate's involvement was "a boost not just to the Beavers and Cubs in north Wales whom she will be supporting directly, but to all of us across the UK who are trying to recruit new adults." A former Brownie, Kate has previously said she "very much hopes" George, Charlotte and Louis will get involved when they are older. Her Majesty the Queen is the Patron of The Scout Association, I expect it will passed to Kate in the coming years.

Kate was greeted by representatives from the organisation and young Scouts.

Kate admired one young boys badges.

Simon Perry reports:

'The royal mom, 37, told young leaders of her hope that her kids will follow in her footsteps, as she was Brownie as a young girl and has acted as an adult volunteer.
“She said she would like them to go into the scouting community because she loves what it stands for — that it’s a very open and inclusive way into life,” said 14-year-old Lauren Noble, who helped show Kate around. “She said it would be a great thing for them to get involved in.”
Noble joined the Duchess of Cambridge as she arrived and admired the youngsters’ badges. “She said it was very impressive that they’d done so much at such a young age and how many skills they could learn.”
“She said she’d like to get her children involved and how you learn so many skills for life in the scouts,” said Patel. “I talked to her about the mosque and how important it is for religion and scouting to blend together and how we have to learn about each other’s religions and be united with each other.”
“She emphasized how important it is to understand each other and learn about each other’s religion and cultures,” the teen added. “She is really humble. I was nervous — we all were — but she was a normal humble human being. She made us feel comfortable.”

The royal visit also celebrates the site’s 100th anniversary year.

Gilwell Park has a fascinating history steeped in efforts supporting the Scouts: "Gilwell Park estate was purchased in early 1919 by William De Bois Maclaren, a publisher and Scout Commissioner from Rosneath, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. During a business trip to London, Maclaren was saddened to see that Scouts in the East End had nowhere suitable to have amazing outdoor adventures. Maclaren bought the estate for the Scout Association. P.B. Nevill, Scout Commissioner for the East End first took his Rover Scouts to begin repairing the estate on 17 April 1919 and it was officially opened on 26 July 1919."

More from Scout Adventures:

'Gilwell Park has become the worldwide spiritual home of Scouting. It is sung of round campfires, remembered by many and is a place of pilgrimage for Scouts from around the globe. Its grounds are scattered with structures, sculptures and statues gifted by international Scout organisations, each of these has a tale of worldwide friendship to tell which resonates with Scouts today.
Gilwell Park also has a fascintating pre-Scouting history, the earliest reference dating from the 1400's sitting on the edge of the Royal Hunting Forest the Park the first known building was a medieval hall. The site has also known infamy and scandal with its links to Dick Turpin and transformation into a regency pleasure palace. During the Second World War the site was requisitioned due to its strategic location overlooking Enfield's reservoirs and armaments factories. This occupation left its mark, the 'bomb-hole' pond created during an air-raid now hosts canoeing, kayaking and raft building activities.'

The White House today serves as a versatile event venue and hotel. Catering for weddings, events and of course outdoor enthusiasts. All income generated goes directly back into supporting Scouting in the UK.

Spring sunshine at Gilwell.

Each year, the Park welcomes thousands of Scouts, schools and youth groups to develop their character skills, including taking the initiative and tenacity; employability skills such as leadership, teamwork and problem solving; and practical skills like cooking and first aid.

Kensington Palace said: "Last year, the Scouts unveiled twenty pilots in England to explore the potential of providing Scouting to children between the ages of four and six. Research has shown that the first five years of a child’s life are more pivotal for development, and for future health and happiness, than any other single moment in their lifetime. What a child experiences during its earliest years shapes the development of the brain and influences interactions at school, work and in society. The new pilot will see Scouts test its exciting programme of activities – which currently reaches 473,000 young people between the ages of 6 and 25 in the UK – to younger children, equipping them with the life skills and values of teamwork, leadership and resilience."

Following independent research, the Scout Association found the earlier children access non-formal education, the more positive the impact of their prospects. They also consulted global groups providing similar models as Scouting to very young children including the Squirrels, for 4-5 year olds, in Northern Ireland and found feedback overwhelmingly positive.

The focus on early years ties in nicely with Kate's focus in the area.

No visit would be complete with a visit to the den. Kate said "It's very waterproof, isn't it".

The photo of the day!

People reports:

'The den had just been built by the youngest Scouts, the Beavers. They had tested whether it was water proof – and the results were almost a complete success.
“Three trials were dry, one was wet! We are very proud that it was three quarters there,” says Frankii Newbury, the early year’s pilot project leader. “[Kate] got straight in there with one of our Beavers and checked it out. It was wonderful and the Scouts absolutely loved her. The highlight was the Duchess, smack bang in the middle of it all, getting in a den — braver woman than I am.”

The youngsters discussed creating the den.

Kate's RHS 'Back to Nature' garden features a rustic den and focuses on the joys of outdoor play throughout childhood.

Kate joined a number of sessions with young children currently taking part in the pilot scheme, including activities to improve communication and teamwork, such as boat building.

 And balloon rocket assembling.

Kate very much enjoyed participating.

Time to get the paints out...

Kate chatted with young Scouts about their experiences.

A group of Scouts aged 14 to 18 showed Kate a number of Gilwell Park’s iconic features, including the famous Gilwell Oak, named UK Tree of the Year in 2017.

Before departing, The Duchess planted an oak sapling to mark the 100th anniversary.

Scouting’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell used the Gilwell oak tree as an analogy for the growth and development of Scouting.

A group shot.

Following the visit, the Scouts tweeted: "From all of us at the Scouts, thank you so much to HRH The Duchess of Cambridge for visiting Gilwell Park today to learn more about our early years pilots and how Scouts helps young people develop."

It was an incredibly fun event, Kate's expression in the photo below sums up her outdoor adventure with the Scouts.

The video below has great footage from the den.

The Duchess chose several familiar pieces for the visit.

Kate wore her trusty Barbour Ladies Waxed Defence Jacket. The military inspired jacket is described as "Traditional Barbour wax, in a versatile field jacket. Flattering and easy fit. Perfect for outdoor adventures. 100% cotton Barbour Tartan lining." Kate has had the piece since at least 2012. It originally retailed for £199 before selling out. Below, Kate sporting it in 2017 for an engagement in support of the Royal Horticultural Society's Campaign for School Gardening.

Kate wore her mahogany J Crew Mockneck sweater. The piece is discounted in a number of colours from $80 to $50 on the J Crew website.

Kate wore her See by Chloe Leather-trimmed suede ankle boots. Described as: "See By Chloé's combat-style ankle boots are perfect for balancing the prettiness of floral dresses and floaty skirts. Made from dark-brown suede, they have tonal leather trims and logo-embossed heel tabs, and are set on a chunky tread sole."

Kate's Closet discovered Kate's UK Scouting scarf is the official UK Adult version.

And accessorised with a new pair of earrings. I'll update when/if they are identified.

In other news, the Duchess had a private meeting with Sir Keith Mills, director of the Royal Foundation yesterday. Tomorrow, George and Charlotte will commence a lengthy break, until the 24th April, from Thomas's Battersea and Willcocks Nursery. I expect the time will be divided between London and Norfolk. I imagine we'll see an engagement announcement or two before the end of the week :)

I'm not sure I think it was because of general attention. But I wonder if it might have been so the royal reporters would be sent by their editors to their tour and not have them stay home for the younger royals. Could be a possibility actually. All speculation, no proof though!

    4. I thought the same thing, Mom of 3. It seemed like all members of the royal family kept a low profile while Charles and Camilla were in Cuba.

What a wonderful and fun engagement! It is so neat to see how engaged Kate is with all the fun adventures. Those kiddos will have a great memory of the day! And hopefully it encourages even more kids and adults to get involved and explore the outdoors. I do really like that focus.

I won’t really comment much on the fashion—she looked lovely and glowing. The sweater was a beautiful color and style, but I am decidedly part of the “banish the skinny/skin tight jeans” brigade 😁

    5. I also agree with Mom.
The royals have been quietly out and about. Harry had a Head's Together event, which I was happy to see--at least the Sussexes are still involved in the Royal Foundation. I think, for the most part, the focus was definitely meant to remain on C&C in the Caribbean. I agree with Rebecca that the royal reporters were concentrated on the tour. Charles has been heavily promoting the international branch of his Prince's Trust during this time. There was a conference on Barbados and Lionel Richie, the newly appointed global ambassador, and Charles got in a few sound bites.
For the rest of the royal activities, press releases from BP-KP were sufficient, without requiring reporters to show up in person. I suspect we can expect more of this Charles-centered approach to PR in the lead up to his monarchy. I sense a shift in the wind.

    6. I saw more of C&C's tour than I usually see, and I did enjoy it! Big Lionel Richie fan, so that was a nice surprise. And I LOVED details of their trip to Cuba.

    7. He hasn't changed in thirty years. Prince Charles made a joke about the song "Hello." . ..are you the one I'm waiting for? Cracked LR up.
The singer has been involved in the Prince's Trust for several years and is dedicated to providing opportunities for young people who might otherwise be lost.

  17. Classic Kate on an outdoor engagement, no complaints!

This J Crew sweater has been on sale, so I bought it in the green color Kate also owns! Unfortunately the burgundy color was sold out in my size. Its soft and warm and I’d highly recommend it—it’s one of the few “royal” pieces I can afford on a grad student’s budget!

    5. This is her (and William’s) season of life to have time with their children. As grandchildren of the monarch their role are less demanding than they will be in the (near) future. As they become the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the future King and Queen they will spend the rest of their lives in the height demanding most hard working positions in the realm, Why not support them in wanting to spend time with their children when they can, rather that criticizing and tearing them down for doing so?

  29. I am right there with you TeaKay! Just because you CAN wear something (as in your body shape is right with it) doesn't mean you SHOULD!!! I do not feel they are professional at all, and fashion be damned, they are not modest in the least. It looks like you put on tights and forgot to finish dressing.

    2. Just a question and not to start an argument, but in this setting, where she was working with kids and getting in dens, and being outside, what do you think she should have worn? I guess I’m thrown by “professional” because to me that sounds like dress pants. And we will agree to disagree on the modesty of skinny jeans.

      Delete
    3. Do you want her in a coat dress and hat when she’s on the ground playing with children?

    4. Times change. I understand someone used to another era's fashion can find them inappropriate, but for people of this time, they are normal trousers.

    5. Caroline in Montana29 March 2019 at 15:28

Jo, I agree with you also. I think these pants are horrid. yes she is thin but she is getting older, is she going to keep wearing the skinny pants/yoga pants into her 40's?? I hate to say it but way too many people wear these pants and it does not look as good as they think. I also think its just immodest for the DoC to wear whatever the engagement. hope the Fad gets over soon, these will never be normal trousers to me and im 43.

No penny, I don't think she should be in a coat dress and hat when playing with children, are you deliberately missing the point? its about the style of pants.

      Delete
    6. What a wonderful engagement! Kate was certainly in her element.
The outfit worn was perfect for a casual outdoor event. The color of the sweater looks great on her and I love those boots. The skinny jeans look amazing on her and go great with the boots.
To me skinny jeans have become something of the fashion norm and really see no issue with them. While I have flared jeans, boot cut etc my favorite style is still skinny jeans and I'm 48.

      Delete
    7. Yeah I'm on the skinny jeans/pants bandwagon too. These definitely don't look like tights to me - they're too thick to be tights and don't look anything like yoga pants. These fit her well, she can move and interact with the children while still being comfortable.
I also don't think it has anything to do with age. I'm a 35-year old professional and I love my skinny jeans and very fitted pants that I wear to the office. Kate does not look like someone trying to be young - that would definitely be a problem. Kate does look like someone that engages with everyone she meets, highlights important causes and cares about what she's doing.

      Delete
    8. Im 56 and still wear all kinds of jeans including skinnies. I don't know what age has to do with it. If you take care of yourself and still have your figure, wear what you like and look good in. 1

      Delete
    9. Agree, Briggs. It appears to me that her thought process in choosing an outfit for an occasion is "what will most fit in with the environment and allow me to interact appropriately with those I meet?" -not" which outfit/look will make the strongest statement, reflect my tastes, and set me apart from the crowd." Kate seems to try to blend. Sometimes the ambiance is gowns and tiaras; sometimes jeans and boots.

      Delete
  30. I kind of think Kate has no choice except to wear skinny jeans. She's extremely long-waisted with no waist or defined hips. Pants with a curvier cut would simply look baggy on her.

I think this whole outfit is really nice and as I said, it suits her figure. But could you imagine Kate in flared jeans? It would look really awkward on her.

    Replies
    1. Caroline in Montana28 March 2019 at 20:29

maybe just skinny straight leg? no need for big flare. she has worn sport pants before and I thought they looked awesome!

      Delete
    2. Kate has worn boot cut jeans before (tour of Canada after her marriage) and they suit her too! I just think skinny jeans are more fashionable at the moment.

      Delete
    3. I saw the Canada pictures. She was also wearing a cowboy hat and more in a "costume." So the flared cowboy style jeans were appropriate. In general however Kate has the sort of figure where jeans meant for curvier women with a more defined waist/hip area would look awkward on her. It would only elongate the torso even more. In fact I always thought that was the reason she so heavily favors skirts and dresses -- much easier to hike up the waistline with a high-placed belt or an empire waist dress.

      Delete
    4. Cowboy hats and jeans are hardly costumes to the people that wear them all the time. I get what you're saying, but she would have looked so out of place in a dress/skirt/anything fancy, although I would have loved to see her in a chambray dress and cowboys boots. That would have been amazing.

The woman can wear flared jeans - if they look baggy on her, it's a fit problem -like the Jigsaw pants she wore in Cyprus. They don't fit her hips and pardon me for saying this, backside properly, so for me, they're not flattering. I'm slightly taller than Kate, definitely a different body type and I have tons of flared jeans in my closet. BUT, I love skinny jeans because there's so much less fabric, they're lighter, you can tuck them into boots, they don't drag on the ground, etc, etc.
      My 10 cents, haha.

Well she's never in the way
Always something nice to say, Oh what a blessing.
I can leave her on her own
Knowing she's okay alone, and there's no messing.
    She's a lady. Whoa, whoa, whoa. She's a lady.

  40. I just watched a video of the Queen at an engagement, She is incredible, but it is clear how old she is. I usually just look at the photos from events and rarely look at longer videos so maybe for all of you who have watched tv or video coverage of the Queen for the last 10 years her aging has been obvious, the still photos do not portray how she has aged. She is still doing really well...but, she is lucky to have a large support group and years of "patterns". I just had not realized how much her age was showing.

  41. Agree, Mel. I also think Catherine knocks it out of the park with her State Banquet, walking with kings tiara look. I definitely feel there is both a Catherine aspect and a Kate side to her essence.
It is so exciting that you will actually be able to walk through Kate's children's outdoor adventure design. With garden experts! And staying at the Rubans. Any chance for some first-hand reports here?

    1. I'll try to give reports but anything I come up with would pale compared to Charlotte's coverage. I also love Catherine in tiara and gown, actually she could wear a flour sack and look absolutely radiant!

    2. I would find your report to be very interesting, especially while touring with experts, who might have interesting comments being urban gardeners. I was lucky enough to have access to 70 acres of a secluded Penn. farm when I was young, and I loved sitting by the little creek playing with the water and stones and then hunting for blackberries. Every child should be able to do that, and I feel so much for children who know nothing more than concrete.

    3. You can be the on the scene reporter with Charlotte the news anchor back at the station. ;)

Actually, I have seen some nifty-looking sacks in my time. Back in the day, my country cousins' wardrobe was cut from feed, seed, and flour sacks. Farmer's wives were all about re-cycling.

    4. My parents were unfortunately not farmers (I say unfortunately because the actual farmers were such nice people), but my mother did hand sew shorts and little tops for me from small pieces of cloth. I think I got two new outfits each season and that seemed like a lot -- certainly sufficient! Even had matching outfits for my stuffed animals. (Not a doll fan.) The local supply of fresh vegetables was inexpensive and so delicious. It's so easy to have a teeny garden with a few tomatoes and some herbs -- or vegetable coops that go to a farmer's market to supply groups of urban dwellers. This is the direction that I would push a garden display. Imagine a hanging basket in the window with squash growing on it!!

    5. Allison: My Mom was/is a collector of fabric. My sister and I grew up wearing skirts and blouses made from the oddest materials. Our favorite skirts were made from vintage flour sacks and ticking, I have a picture of us in two-piece bathing suits made from red and blue bandanas, we were four and six. You should see my mother's house, it is full of the most beautiful textiles from around the world, it is an amazing collage of color and comfort. :)
We all garden in my family, my sister is heavily involved in urban gardening professionally and we went to Cuba in 1998 with many of the same people we are meeting in London. I am going to be with my beloved sister in my favorite city in the world and I doubt I will even look at my phone or tablet for at least a week, but I will try to post something. We are also going to Alsace and Avignon to eat drink and swoon over the gorgeous fresh markets.

    6. Mel in SoCal, I love textiles. I am a weaver but work so much that I can't enjoy it right now. I have a friend who is a professional photographer and Cuban; she visited Cuba about 2 years ago and her photos of the farmland were amazing. I hope you have a wonderful offline vacation! There's nothing like it. My mother and her beloved sister used to travel in Europe in their 70s and that was before computers. Their adventures were recorded verbally. Would love to hear your opinions of the garden presentations after your trip.

  45. I imagine that each generation has a different concept of the function of the RF, beginning from when such concepts were not allowed. :) In addition to maintaining normalcy and representing the citizens at important functions and events, increasingly the RF has been doing good works, helping people in concrete ways. The Queen does so much even at her age -- do you think when Charles is king that William and Kate will have to be working everyday? I remeber William saying around when George was born that he would put his family first even if it was unpopular -- I wonder if Kate will be able to take off school holidays in the future? Some day it will be just C&C, W&K, and H&M. If so, I imagine she will continue her special interests but also have to just go where needed. I have noticed, though, that Eugenie is doing a lot on her own and in important areas such as plastic use. I don't know if she was given encouragement to tackle things that are important to her or if she just reached a certain age, but I give her a lot of credit for what she does as a "nonworking royal." (I like to think of her and Meghan strategizing together at night.)

    3. Unfortunately, Charles has decided to streamline to Monarchy so that the children of his siblings will not be working royals.

      Delete
    4. The royals send their children off to boarding school at age 8, so only two more years at home for George. As grandchildren of the monarch, William and Kate have a much lighter schedule now than they will have in the future when they become the Prince and Princess of Wales. However, by that time they will be at a season in their lives when they will most likely have children away at school so they will have more time to work.

William and Harry did not go to birding school. I would put my money on Eton for the boys and another high quality girls private school for Charlotte. William and Kate may surprise us and send them all coed however. Who knows. It’s interesting that they don’t go to the same kindergarten. We shall see!!

Birding school-where one learns falconry, I assume? ;)
I thought the plan was for George to remain at his present school. I think it goes up to she 13 and is also coed, I believe. Wasn't there a plan that Charlotte would attend that school as well? From there, I think day schools for both. I wonder if Charles regretted keeping the boys in boarding school after they lost their Mum instead of keeping them with him while they grieved and attempted to cope with her death. We know now that William coped better than his brother. I read that he was lead to believe that their life should be kept as normal as possible by not changing their school routine.
I don't know why I think the Cambridge children won't be enrolled in boarding school. I do think Charlotte would thrive, while George might retreat into himself. George does seem to be capable of boisterous behavior at times while being somewhat introspective at other times. At least from the rather limited view press coverage affords.

Omg birding school, thank you for your humour Anon 2050! And how about some eagling as well.. I don’t know why I thought that William and Harry had not been to boarding school. Kate went to boarding school as well. Maybe I thought that Princess Diana and Prince Charles for that matter, given his horrible experience at Gordonstoun, would not do that to their boys. But the schools chosen were considered ‘soft’ in comparison, so maybe it’s just in their culture, who knows. Boarding school feels like a punishment to me, so I hope that the Cambridge children get to go to day school, at least until the early teenage years. Maybe high school is different, I don’t know. I would love to hear what the Duchess Kate community has to say about the matter :-)

      Delete
    2. IMO They are sure to attend boarding school. As you say RW, it is in their culture. Like in some countries the successful kids go for sciences, in others for Latin, because it is what it is done. The "good" schools are boarding schools and in the UK it is also also the way to make lifelong friends. William and Kate both went to boarding school and have happy memories from that time. And it hasn't cut them from their family, at least Kate's. Perhaps I am wrong, but I am willing to bet they will follow the tradition.

      Delete
    3. Thank-you for a much-needed chuckle, RW.

      Delete
    4. I was also responding to Anon 22:12 who said they would go to boarding school at age 8 as that was the tradition for the royals. Actually, royal schooling routine has been evolving and is individualized Charles and Diana broke ground when they sent the boys away from home. I've read that Phillip sent Charles to Gordonstoun in Scotland to get him away with his Gran's influence. Harry and William were kept much closer to home. I don't believe either of Edward's children are enrolled in boarding school. I don't know about Andrew's girls' early education.
The tradition for the royals over centuries was home schooling by tutors and governesses. The Queen did not attend boarding school as a child. The upper class and some of the aristocracy, on the other hand, seemed to follow that pattern-for the sons and only lately the daughters. Times have changed considerably the past decade or two. The level of security that would be required now to keep both-or all three children in a 24/7 facility would seem to rule boarding school out. The fact that William and Catherine have spoken often about their commitment to being hands-on parents as much as possible is another factor I considered. They have said they try to keep at least one parent available for the children. Frequently, if one had an evening engagement the other was free to be available for the children. I believe supper and bed tucking in was mentioned. Of course, there is infant Louis to consider now. For example, William has just completed a three week stint with British security--MI5, MI6 etc., which would have ruled out a family vacation during break. He is due to travel to New Zealand for the Queen in a couple of weeks or so. Combined with his other duties it would have kept him extremely busy. The children are home on break from school and I suspect the lack of scheduled engagements for Kate may reflect the need for at least one parent to stay close to home. There are a number of work activities Kate can accomplish whilst staying close to home at KP. Meetings, interviews and such.
Of course, again, time will tell. I only wish could be around to see how things turn out.

    5. She has a nanny. If William is gone, the nanny is there to watch the kids if Kate works outside the home. William being gone is no excuse for Kate to not be doing engagements. If they adhere to the rule that one parent would always be there for the children, then they wouldn’t need a nanny.

To raise healthy, happy kids who will in turn serve their country is a huge endeavor with which she is doing a wonderful job. And the lack of sleep during the years with young children! I remember it so well and am so glad I am past those years myself:)

Maybe Kate is working on this project from home at KP while the children are home.
I don't anticipate any big roll-out until after baby Sussex appears.

I do agree that we were left with a waiting for the other shoe to drop sort of anticiipation.
She described this effort as something she will be involved with the rest of her life. It involves a definitive plan for implementing programs for families to have the best chance possible to raise healthy children.
It involves multiple organisations and many experts. There is a steering committee which was announced with the initial publicity. This is not just project for Kate. As I recall, it was part of a synopsis of future activities planned.
This is no flash in the pan P R event. It is complicated.

      Delete
    6. I could be totally wrong, but I don’t think the idea of Kate’s revealing a big project at the start of the year was something that her team said would happen imminently. I think it was hinted at in the media—another case of the media setting expectations and then people being irritated at the subject of the story for not meeting the media’s expectations. Kate has had a definite focus on early years development since her return from maternity leave. Yes, she set up a steering committtee—but these kinds of committees regularly run into road blocks, and I’m not sure it’s been made clear to the public what the ultimate goal of the committee is. I just don’t think Kate should be criticized for not revealing a project within a certain time frame when she never publicized a time frame to begin with.

      Delete
    7. She had an engagement which involved an organisation that is part of the project. Was it the College of Obstetrics, Gynecology...? The steering committee was mentioned in conjunction with this engagement. It was not actually a roll out of the program but it did create interest and anticipation...two click-motivators. I guess it also inspired social media to comment. I don't think this was an example of false press hype at the time, although that certainly exists--mostly during relative quiet times with the younger, popular royals. I think the lead up to the weddings and now baby Sussex is an example of creating false expectations and hype.

    4. I do find it a bit tiresome when Kate is criticized for not behaving like “the average mom”. She’s not the average mom, and I don’t think most average moms would want to trade places with her if they really thought about how she has to live. Yes, she has help and a monetarily easier life of privilege than the average mom. But the average mom doesn’t have to be escorted by security everywhere she goes nor does she have to worry about specific terrorist threats to her husband, children, or own person not to mention the people who obssess over their family as if they know and own them. The average mom does not have her every move, facial expression, or clothing picked apart everytime she goes to work, nor is she expected to be “on” and completely engaged every second of her work day. The average mom doesn’t have to consider the opinion of the nation or the entire world when we she goes to her assignment any given day. The average mom doesn’t have stories constantly made up about her and splashed across magazine and the internet—some of which make up terrible lies that undermine her relationship with family and friends. The average mom doesn’t have to live every moment of her life knowing that there really are people out there trying to dig up dirt about you and your family and will use any crumb they find to spin sensational tales. It seems like a lot of pressure to me—especially for someone like Kate who doesn’t seem like she just loves being the center of attention.

She is doing her best to balance her family and her role. When she came back from maternity leave, the statement was very clearly made that her children would still be her first priority, so it really is no surprise that she takes time off when her children are out of school. That, incidentally, does seem to be what the other moms in the royal family do as well—I haven’t seen that Sophie, who is usually very active, has had any engagements since the school holidays began either. And the queen is on break as well.

I know she has duties to her country that go with her role, and she needs to prioritize those, too. I also understand that different people have different perspectives about what the appropriate balance is. I do think her work with early years development has shown her how important time with your children is when they are young, and she is prioritizing that. I think it’s a wise choice. I would like to see her out and about, too, but to see a woman criticized for taking time to be with her family is just rather sad to me.

    6. I don't think anyone would criticize Kate for the amount of time she spends with her family if she were out an average of once a week. Just 52 times a year. That leaves plenty of family time while still balancing her work commitments and remaining in the public eye.

Yes, Kate has given up a lot for her position but she lives a very privileged life and is expected to represent the Crown in exchange.

FWIW, the average woman puts up with a lot too. Most work full time, raise their children and keep house without any help, deal with mental health and health issues, aging parents and the dangers in our world without any security or protection. These are the true heros.

      Delete
    7. Teakay, the average mom deals with a LOT. Please don’t make it seem as if the average mom is living a better life than a duchess. It’s not about who has it harder.

      Delete
    8. Catherine had at least eight photographed (verified) engagements in March. By your reasoning that should equal two month's activities. And April is not yet half over. I imagine she considered the up-coming school break and William's busy schedule when planning activities and that was behind her March schedule -which, unfortunately, spoiled us a bit.

TeaKay, magnificent comment but I fear you are preaching to the choir. I have made similar comments- or attempted to -many times. I have been reading this blog for nearly seven years and the subject of "Does Kate Work Enough?" Never fails to incite vigorous, polarised discussion. There is no written, publicly known rule-book specifying what constitutes royal work requirements and therefore no official standard by which to judge "enough." One day a week? Some call for a 40 hour week for royals.
This line of discussion only leads to bad feelings and no one alters his viewpoint, as far as I can see. I assume those who introduce the subject are new to this blog and not aware of this effect.

    9. Anon 17:58–I’m sorry if my comment came across the wrong way to you. I wasn’t trying to say “who had it harder,” and as a mom of two children, one of whom has some fairly serious special needs that will require my mom attention for my whole life, and the other who deals with “normal” struggles of growing up, I do very much know that “average” moms have a hard path to walk, too. We all do what we are able to do in the best interest of our families. My only point was that comparing Kate’s situation to the “average mom’s” and then criticizing her for not being like the average mom does not seem fair. I wouldn’t compare the choices another mom made to mine—my road is a very different one than most. Kate’s is, too, and people often focus on the privilege and not the challenge. We all manage the challenges we have before us the best we can, but I think we should all consider the other person’s struggles before we criticize them for not making the same choices we think we would in their shoes....

You are correct Anon 2050, it is a challenging subject, and my intention was not to stir up harsh feelings. I will back off now 😁

Now if she paid for her own security that trailed her during her time off I wouldn’t take issue with it. But she doesn’t. Doing a couple engagements a week wouldn’t kill the kids

      Delete
    14. Like a another poster said some time ago, Kate is following a definite pattern since moving to KP. She bunches up her engagements on Tuesdays, Wenesdays and/or Fridays. With a few exceptions, she doesn't have engagements during school holidays. She is following Sophie Wessex example. It seems it is the usual pattern for working members of the RF.

      Delete
    15. Sophie Wessex and Kate don’t have the same role. In fact Kate should be doing more engagements than Sophie.

      Delete
    16. Just because Kate is not at a public engagement doesn't mean she is not working. She does behind the scenes meetings and is raising THREE royals, one of being the future king. Raising them in a healthy, happy home is a tremendous amount of work. If that's all she did & we never saw her then her work would be a grand success. Raising children is an incredibly self-sacrificing, hard job with benefits or consequences that will multiply as each child grows up and no one should criticize her if she does this well. I think she does a wonderful job balancing motherhood & some other things. Don't waver, Kate, on your core values!

      Delete
    17. Why should Kate do more engagements than Sophie? They both are supporting the Queen and both have the same privileges and lifestyle provided by the Queen or the taxpayers. Only difference, Kate's workload is going to increase exponentially when the Queen dies and even more when William is King, whereas Sophie is now at the top of her activity, and will do less and less in the future while keeping the privileges.

      Delete
    18. Natacha, you are oversimplifying. The only differenc you state is one of many. And it should also be in Kates interest to do more engagements, regardless of the publics opinion.
