UPDATED: Duchess Kate in Green McQueen for St Patrick's Day!

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Daoibh!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for the St Patrick's Day Parade at Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow this morning.

The annual St Patrick's Day event has become something of a favourite among readers over recent years.

Prince William is colonel of the regiment, which he was made in May 2011; it was his first honorary position in the army. Her Majesty the Queen is Colonel in Chief of the regiment. As you all remember, the Prince opted to wear the Irish Guards tunic for the royal wedding.

A minute’s silence was held for the victims of the attack in Christchurch, New Zealand. The horrific tragedy has been very much front and centre in the minds of so many across the world. The strength and courage shown by the people of New Zealand has been nothing short of inspirational.

A joint statement from William, Kate, Harry and Meghan concluded with Kia kaha - a Māori phrase used by the people of New Zealand, meaning stay strong.

'Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the people who lost their lives in the devastating attack in Christchurch. We have all been fortunate to spend time in Christchurch and have felt the warm, open-hearted and generous spirit that is core to its remarkable people.
No person should ever have to fear attending a sacred place of worship. This senseless attack is an affront to the people of Christchurch and New Zealand, and the broader Muslim community. It is a horrifying assault on a way of life that embodies decency, community, and friendship.
We know that from this devastation and deep mourning, the people of New Zealand will unite to show that such evil can never defeat compassion and tolerance. We send our thoughts and prayers to everyone in New Zealand today.
 Kia Kaha.'

350 soldiers marched onto the Parade Square at Cavalry Barracks.

The 1st Battalion Irish Guards affectionately and widely known as the Micks, are a Light Role Infantry Battalion currently stationed in Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow.

The regiment takes its motto, 'Quis Separabit' or 'Who shall separate us?' from the Order of St Patrick, an order of chivalry founded by George III.

On their Facebook page, the regiment shared a photo of three Irish Guardsmen wearing German body-armor, inspecting a captured German machine gun, at the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, 31 July 1917.

Kensington Palace said: "The Irish Guards have had a busy yet rewarding 12 months with three years of ceremonial duties coming to an end in January 2019. The main focus was on Exercise Askari Storm, a battlegroup level exercise in Kenya. The Irish Guards currently have troops deployed in Uganda, Jordan and Kenya as they also prepare to go onto high readiness from the beginning of April. They will see Number One Company deploying to Georgia in August. From September mission specific training will ramp up for the Battalion as they prepare to deploy on operations to South Sudan and Iraq."

St Patrick's Day is the traditional celebration of the Irish Guards and fresh shamrock is presented to members of the regiment.

The Battalion is made up of five companies with a variety of supporting arms. The shamrock the Irish Guards receive is tucked behind the Cap Star on the forage cap, as seen on William below.

The video below offers a snapshot of life in the Irish Guards.

International Bagpipe Day last week coincided with Prince Edward's birthday, and in true Mick Guard fashion they broke out the pipes to wish him well.

The Duchess presented the shamrock to Officers and Warrant Officers....

And the regiment's mascot...

Domhnall and the Duchess.

Photos of Kate and Domhnall have become a staple over the years, and continue to be a favourite of mine.

The parade concluded with a march-past where Prince William took the salute.

More on the tradition inaugurated by Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, in 1901 when a decree stated:

'Her Majesty the Queen is pleased to order that in future, upon St. Patrick's Day, all ranks of her Irish regiments shall wear, as a distinction, a sprig of shamrock in their head dress to commemorate the gallantry of her Irish soldiers during the recent battles in South Africa.'

The tradition has become synonymous with a number of royals since, most notably the Queen Mother, who had a long affiliation and love for the Irish Guards after attending the annual military parade for the first time in 1927. It wasn't until 1964 she started to present the Royal Shamrock to the Battalion, describing it as a "great pleasure which has enabled me to forge a link with the regiment I greatly cherish". The regiment supplied the pallbearers for her funeral in 2002.

The tradition is now very much associated with Kate.

Kate was given a gorgeous posy.

Erin, Jemima and Athene were delighted to meet Kate.

The Duke and Duchess then met members of the Regiment before sitting for official Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess photographs.

The couple met soldiers and their families.

More from the Mail Online:

'Ryan Orr, who has been with the Irish guards since 2004, brought his six-year-old son Kallum to the parade. It is Kallum's second parade, having met William and Kate in 2016. The recruitment warrant officer, who lives in Aldershot, joked: 'He put his hand in Prince William's pint three years ago, didn't you sausage?'
Asked if he was proud of his dad, Kallum said 'Yeah, extremely', adding that he was looking forward to meeting the duchess again. The family later shared a laugh with Kate and William as they recounted the episode. Mr Orr said: 'It means a lot because every (St Patrick's) day we get together... have a good drink and a catch up at the same time.'

Kate meeting Junior Soldiers.

William chatting with soldiers.

A terrific photo from the day.

Finally, The Duke and Duchess visited the Guardsman’s lunch where the longest-serving Guardsman in the Battalion proposed a toast to William and Kate, and thanked The Duchess for presenting the gift of shamrock.

A video from the event.

Below we see Kate in 2012 and 2013 wearing a green Emilia Wickstead coat; in 2014 the Duchess opted for her very stylish Hobbs London Persephone trench; and in 2015 she surprised us in a chestnut brown Catherine Walker coat. In 2017 and 2018 Kate chose bespoke green Catherine Walker creations.

This year, the Duchess chose a deep green bespoke Alexander McQueen coat. The military inspired piece features peplum detail and structured shoulders.

The UFO No More team noted similarities between the piece and McQueen's Military Jacket. It is described as: "Military-inspired peplum jacket in light wool silk. Metal mythical decorated buttons on waist and collar. Concealed button fastening on center front."

A closer look at Kate's green hat. Michelle notes it's similar to several Lock & Co designs.

The Duchess wore her Gianvito Rossi Piper black suede block heel pumps. They retail for $695 at My Theresa.

Kate accessorised with her Kiki McDonough Special Edition Green Tourmaline, Green Amethyst and Diamond Earrings. They were specially made to celebrate the birth of Princess Charlotte.

As in previous years, the Duchess wore the Irish Guards gold shamrock brooch. The three-leaf brooch which has been worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Anne, belongs to the regiment and they determine to whom it be loaned. Kate also wore a sprig of shamrock on her lapel.

Kate has a busy day on Tuesday. The Duchess will visit the Foundling Museum to see how they use art to make a positive contribution to society by engaging with vulnerable and marginalised young people. We'll also see her join Her Majesty to open Bush House, King's College, London.

  2. Kate has been on a fantastic recycling binge recently, that I was secretly hoping for a repeat of the Catherine Walker coat that she wore for St. Patrick's day in 2017. I adore the style of that coat on her but I am happy to see a new piece today :)

On a side note (and I apologise for going off-topic here) but just the other day I had wondered when we would see Kate and William on a royal tour again. Has anyone else thought the same?

    2. She has already repeated it recently(11 November). All her green coats have been repeated so I was waiting for a new green coat or the maternity Dolce & Gabbana one to be adjusted. It's a new outfit but seems "Déjà vu".

    3. I love Kate's outfit and as always, it is wonderful. Her hat is great! I would love to see her change it up and wear a mint green coat one year. I have been wondering about a Royal tour myself. They are certainly due for one. I hope there will be one sometime this summer or fall. Wouldn't it be great if they took all three children!?!? I always love the way Kate looks at William.

This coat has similarities to the coat Kate wore for Remembrance Day last November. Maybe that’s why some are getting a deja vu feeling?

    6. Loooooove the hat! And the earrings are incredible. I would love Kiki earrings in every color. A royal tour might be a bit much with three young children, one still an infant. I think having three young children is very difficult. I can barely remember the first year of my third child’s life! Even though she has plenty of help it has to still be challenging.

    7. I expect there will be a tour this spring or summer, they always do one when Kate isn't pregnant or just gave birth. It will be interesting to see where they go next. I thought the Caribbean, but Charles and Camilla are doing that one.

    8. With regards to taking the kids with them on tour, I am just wondering at what point is it not fun anymore for the kids to be dragged along on what is essentially a business trip for mom and dad, while they spend their time with the nanny at the governor of wherever’s house (which is probably not too child friendly)?
Louis is still very small, so that might tip the scales this time, but I think we are getting to the stage where they would rather do a tour during school time, while leaving the kids with nanny and give the kids their undivided attention over holidays. Or at least that is what I would do.

  3. Fabulous and regal ad always In response to Avee A royal tour would be fab but I guess with schooling it could be a trip without the kids as I don’t think they would take 2 and leave George Just my thoughts xx

  5. Kate looks lovely as always but I agree it's so déja vu. She has so so so many coat dresses and many of them only differ ever so slightly in detail and colour. This, though beautiful has an old feeling for me. Maybe Charlotte we can do a designer or colour ordered post on Kate's coat dresses?

One of my favourite events of the year! Kate looks lovely in her coat and hat, and William very handsome in uniform. Can't wait to see pictures with the Irish wolfhound Domhnall. I think I spelt that correctly?!

  7. Looking back on previous years, this is my favorite look to date for this event. The color is deep and rich, the military vibe spot on, and the black block heels and gloves are better, in my opinion, than trying to match greens. The tailoring is exquisite, too. There has been a lot of comments about Kate's increasingly regal presence since the birth of Prince Louis and I completely agree. Even her posture seems to be better and more confident. She and William are a great team. She shines today.

    1. With everything you commented, I agree, this new very dark green coat also has more faster at neck and the bottom of the coat to keep it closed for chill and wind. Kate is wearing new green hat 🍀 that I love 💚, it reminds me of the red hat she wore in 2012. A well planned outfit, beautiful.

  9. First thoughts: love the hat, the coat is pretty but looks so much like all her other green coats.

In fact here's a lineup of all her other green coats she's worn in previous St. Patrick's Days:
    https://katemiddletonstyle.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/kate-middleton-st-patricks-day.jpg

On St. Patrick's Day I kind of wished for more colorful shoes. The black block pumps are fine but I loved the shoes she wore in 2017:

She does look really happy and William looks handsome in the uniform.

  12. Charlotte, Thanks for the quick preview. I just looked at a photographer's website of some pictures from today. Kate is laughing & smiling in almost all. I especially love the ones where William needs to have a serious military face along with those in uniform & she is still smiling because she can. Any insight on her conversations or what's she's laughing about. They look like they are having the time of their life. I imagine there must be some joke about the military troops getting sprigs/almost flowers as they are all dressed in uniform looking so tough. What good rapport William & Kate have with everyone! And I second the comment above about how confident Kate is. She's more than confident though, she's comfortable & putting everyone she interacts with at comfort & enjoying a hearty laugh with most. What a gift of interacting she has developed!

  13. No one does hats like Kate! She won me hat-wise with her red hat with leaves on the tour to Canada years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It’s a nice coat - the front tab belt is an unusual feature. The brass buttons and closed neckline give it a military vibe which is so appropriate for the setting today. Love her shoes and the hat, but for me the Miss today is that the florral motif in the hat’s design doesn’t match the rest of outfit’s tone.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At first glance I thought the motif resembled a four leaf clover. 😉

    2. Oooh I love the floral motif of the hat and think it looks great with the structure of the coat.

    3. Zipzipzippy, I agree with you about the hat.

    4. Oh I loved the floral motif! :)

      Delete
    5. She may have gone for a contrast to the coat's military air rather than a matching one with her hat. That is a styling tactic commonly used. Avoids the "matchy-matchy" look some dislike.I think it softens the exquisitely tailored design and adds a feminine touch. It is a beautiful hat for Kate.

You can see the seams at the top of each coat are the same and the peplum appears to be on both, too.

Kate have the giggles and William looks like a cat who got cream and the there is always at least one picture of them staring in each other’s eyes. I am so glad that this has become a regular feature in their diaries.

And wowza! She looks stunning! Love the cut of the coat. And great styling all around! I love how 40s it feel! And as always she looks great in green. I like that there is almost a blue/turqouise tone in this look. I seem to remember that it had some connection to the area too?

Also I just noticed this is the first year she wore McQueen to this event. Which really surprise me considering how often she use them for bespoke pieces for special events, especially with a military look. So I think this coat has been a long time coming!

  30. If she didn't already have green coats, yeas, it is an OK look - but honestly, Britain is on the verge of political chaos, at least for a while, and Kate needs a new, AMcQ, green coat?

  33. Kate 'hit it out of the park again' IMHO. I figured she would go with a coat that had miltary styling (she seems to be on the kick with the Remembrance McQueen coat). I like this coat, the peplum, the belt in the front and even the darting around the neck all give it beautiful lines. I have to say, it would have been interesting to see a skirt a little closer in line with the model versus (like that Michael Kors plaid suit). It would have been a nice surprise.

Love, love the hat, so pretty and those earrings worked perfectly with the ensemble. Wonder what she's wearing underneath.

  37. I think this is a very unique coat. It emits royalty with its lines and structure. I particularly like the seams at the yoke! And I'm so happy her version does not include all the buttons on the peplum detail. (I think some of Kate's pieces have overwhelmed her beauty with their button-overload.) The three buttons in the front mimic a shamrock shape. :) I only wish, wish, wish upon a golden shamrock that she would have worn deep, deep dark chocolate gloves and shoes. Kate is stunning in brown, both in dress and in accessories. Black always seems "separate" from her and detracts from an otherwise stunning look. Happy St. Patrick's Day! Carla

    2. Laura, YES! I love what your mother said, that nature does not make mistakes! And I believe that includes each of us as individuals. I almost breathe a sigh of relief when I see someone repeat colors, lines, and shapes of their face, body, hair, eyes, skin tone, etc... in their clothing, make-up, etc...; they are exhibiting their unique beauty instead of the latest trend. Kate ALWAYS appears more embodied in herself when she wears things like her brown boots; she's repeating her hair color and it gives her a sense of being grounded. Thank you for your reply! Carla

    3. Brown and green work very well together. But this particular green has blue undertones, I think black is better here. Brown would clash a bit.

      Delete
    4. Natacha, I agree this particular green looks like it has blue undertones, especially in the outdoor images. The indoor video footage gives an entirely different perception of what kind of green it might be. :) Here in Colorado we have blue spruce evergreen trees which have a distinctly blue-green tone. I think brown would still work for Kate's shoes here, but you're right, it might have to be a particular type of brown (maybe that has black-blue added in?). I also read a comment that said Kate's black shoes match William's, and that might have been considered for today's event. Nevertheless, I personally think black is not the best color for Kate in any form - clothing, accessories, or black eyeliner - and I would be happy to see her retire from using it. I think it ages her and is harsh. I think these black shoes look disconnected from an otherwise elegant outfit. If she kept the exact same shoe style but in a shade of brown the outfit would look cohesive. It's fun and interesting to read everyone's different opinions on the same images! :) Carla

  48. Kate looks appropriate and classy as per usual. I love seeing the two of them interact with the families. They seem like part of the team!
Kate's hat is reminiscent of her red Jubilee hat and blue British Colombia, Canada hat.
I wonder if she would ever do mixed colors like her C-mas coat from 2017. I don't know if that would be too Scottish for an Irish regiment. Our UK commenters would have to call that for me.

  49. I guess I will echo others when I say how confident the Duchess looks. Comparing her pictures from st. Patrick's day from previous years, the transform she went through is evident; from a young and somewhat girlish, to a regal, confident and mature woman. From a personal level, I can relate. I have had my third child 4 months ago, and I do feel that becoming a mother of three was a milestone for me. The challenges of taking care of children, loving them and educating them are so powerful, to any woman.

    1. I imagine that is because she is Queen in waiting. One day she might do things differently, but then maybe not.

  53. Kate looks amazing! Love the whole look. She nailed it from top to toe. Would like to see her infuse a different colour into her look on this day though.

    1. I agree. The brown coat she wore in 2015 was an unusual (but pleasant) surprise.

  54. The thing I love most about today is how relaxed Kate seems. Sometimes she seems so guarded, I love seeing her true personality come out. The details to this coat is beautiful and I love the hat. Definitely one of my favorite outings of the year and love her look.

  57. This outfit is perfection. This look and the brown one are my 2 favorites for this event.

I think part of her ‘new regal bearing’ is that she has finally become comfortable resting her arms at her sides while walking and standing rather than clasping her hands in front of her stomach.:)

I like this look from head to toe, (especially those earing's and the hat!!) but the brown Catherine walker ensemble is still my favorite year. this is my favorite uniform on William too! I agree with the earlier poster saying that dark brown chocolate brown gloves and shoes would have been a great look but now that I think about it, the black accessories do match Williams uniform. love how happy they look and what a fun day it must be. would love to see them on a tour this year but I think they would leave the kids at home, would that really be fun dragging three small children around for naught? on a serious note, I do wonder though, how much of that pint they actually drink?? :)

The whole outfit is perfection. She has such a polished military look-I love it. This event is always my favorite every year. I think it's nice that they see the same people and get to build some rapport with them. Loved everything about it.

  62. Ladies, this outfit is a snore. Maybe a more spritely shade of green, maybe something more flowy/feminine?

  63. When I saw William and Catherine standing on the platform for the one minute silence I saw the future King and Queen of the UK/Commonwealth. They have both matured into their roles. I think they really both enjoy working together and getting some time together away from the kids seems to be fun as well.

When you are home with three small children these Adult outings take on a whole new meaning.
It appears that Kate and William seem more at ease and happy and confident.

I love this regal military style on Kate...the best green coat/hat look yet!
