The Duchess Introduces the Queen to 'Back to Nature'

It was a decidedly royal affair for the preview of this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It's particularly special for the Duchess of Cambridge, as she was delighted to introduce her garden 'Back to Nature' to the Queen and other members of the Royal family.

We've been quite literally spoiled in the run up to this evening, with a selection of candid photos, behind-the-scenes updates, and of course seeing the Cambridge children playing. In a video released by the Palace this morning, the Duchess spoke about the inspiration and process: "It really ties into some of the early years work I've been doing, and I've been really trying to learn about the impact, the importance and relationship of our early childhood experiences on our later adult life. An amazing fact I learned recently was that 90% of our adult brains are developed before that age of five. That's why I think it's so important that all of us whether we're parents or carers or families members really engage in quality time with children and babies from a really, really young age. I really hope this woodland we've created, in a huge collaboration, really inspires families and kids and communities in general to get outside. Enjoy nature. Enjoy the outdoors and really spend quality time together."

The Duke and Duchess arriving this evening.

In a letter to experts revealed over the weekend, the Duchess wrote: "In recent years I have focused much of my work on the early years, and how instrumental they are for outcomes later in life. I believe that spending time outdoors when we are young can play a role in laying the foundations for children to become happy, healthy adults. There are undoubtedly challenges in trying to bring about the transformation that will make positive change for generations to come, and help break the inter-generational cycle of disadvantage and trauma, yet I am inspired every day by the people I meet and am committed to supporting this endeavour. I hope my long-term commitment to working in the early years will help make a difference over a generational timescale."

In January, it was announced the Duchess had spent several months co-creating the RHS 'Back to Nature' garden. Inspired by childhood memories of the natural world and moments that will be created by families in the future. The vision for the garden was to recapture for adults "the sense of wonder and magic" they enjoyed outdoors as children. It is understood the Cambridges' Norfolk bolthole Anmer Hall and Kate's childhood served as inspiration.

The woodland garden is a treat for families in which to play, learn and explore the joys of the outdoors. Let's take a look at the completed project.

More from the RHS: "The tree house, the centrepiece of the garden, is constructed from a beautiful tree with a high platform clad in stag horn oak. A swing seat hangs from the branches, creating a place for children and families to play together. A waterfall and stream offer places to paddle, relax and build dams, while a hollow log presents a challenge of learning to balance as well as to climb."

The pebble-lined stream runs through the garden.

The plants featured include edible produce, plants for craft activities, nectar to attract pollinators and food for wildlife.

A calming green and blue colour palette offers a relaxing space to unwind.

The RHS revealed: "The RHS Back to Nature Garden is key to the RHS’s partnership with NHS England, promoting the physical and emotional wellbeing that access to green spaces and gardening provides. After RHS Chelsea Flower Show, much of the planting and some of the landscaping will go to Devon Partnership NHS Trust Dewnans Centre, as part of a national competition run by the RHS. National Clinical Director for Mental Health, NHS England, Tim Kendall said: "This amazing gift from the RHS has the potential to really touch the lives of staff, patients, and their families at the trust, offering people with the most severe and complex mental health difficulties hope, purpose and sanctuary."

According to royal reporters on the scene, Kate was particularly excited to show the Queen 'Back to Nature'. Emily Andrews reports: "Before Her Majesty arrived, Kate quickly swept the garden for stray leaves and stuffed a dead branch into her handbag (& gave it to an aide) as there wasn’t a bin! Kate’s last minute sweep of her garden paid off. “It’s very tidy” remarked the Queen as she walked past the perimeter. HM chuckled when William showed her the Reed boats Kate and the schoolkids has made earlier. Kate was endearingly nervous at first and William held back as she led."

The Duchess discussed elements of the garden with the Queen. Lizzie Robinson noted Kate incorporated memories from the Queen's life "including carrots and beetroot which she remembers planting as a girl."

Established in 1913 on the grounds of Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show has become one of the world’s greatest showcases for horticultural excellence, attracting visitors and exhibitors from across the globe. Since its beginning, the show has gone from strength to strength. It has grown from 244 exhibitors in 1913 to over 500 today, including gardens, nurseries, floristry, educational displays and trade stands.

The Chelsea Flower Show is a staple on the royal calendar thanks to Her Majesty's patronage of the Royal Horticultural Society, and the show has been attended by countless royals over the years. Since the Queen's ascension to the throne in 1952, she has only missed it five times. It's an event she dearly loves and I imagine it's extra special to have a garden by a member of the family. Kate's garden continues a tradition started by her father-in-law. In 2002, Prince Charles co-designed a garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in memory of the Queen Mother. Prince Harry co-created a garden in 2013 for Sentebale. In 2015, Prince Harry enlisted Matt Keightley to create the 'Hope in Vulnerability' garden based on the flowers of Lesotho.

Kate introduces Her Majesty to co-designers Andree Davies and Adam White of Davies White Landscape Architects.

More from the Mail Online:

'As they departed, the Queen remarked: 'Very interesting.' Kate was heard to say: 'Thank you very much, Your Majesty. We will see you later.' There was also a comedy moment when the director general of the RHS, Sue Biggs, remarked to the Queen, 'You didn't fancy a go?' - thought to be in reference to the garden's rope swing, which Kate and her children had all swung on the day before.'

The Countess of Wessex was eager to visit the treehouse.

The Duchess gives Princess Beatrice a tour.

A video from the evening.

Kate selected the very pretty Erdem 'Shebah' dress for the event (with thanks to Danielle Stacey).

The floral, cotton-silk dress is crafted of white cotton-silk voile printed with a multicoloured floral pattern. It's described as: "Showcasing the Victorian influence on the British label, this high-neck style is accented with white crocheted lace and raw-edge ruffled trim. High neck. Three-quarter-length sleeves." The print worked very well with the background of the green hues in the garden.

Several of you noted the print appears to feature forget-me-nots, Diana's favourite flower, which is included in 'Back to Nature'.

Kate wore her Castaner Carina wedges.

The Duchess accessorised with her Cassandra Goad Cavolfiore Pearl Studs. The £4,360 pair are described as "set with seven pearls set with diamonds (0.3cts). Inspired by the clusters of young flower stalks of the cauliflower (cavolfiore) in the market. From the Journey to Sicily".

And her Cartier watch.

I really enjoyed hearing Kate speak to Monty Don on the BBC's RHS Chelsea Flower Show earlier this evening. She toured the garden with him and spoke about the process of choosing the trees in the winter and her belief in encouraging families to spend more time outside. She spoke about how much she loves spending time outdoors as a family, cooking and sourcing materials from her own garden. She said she used "a lot of the bits I've been collecting with kiddies". Kate added she "gets as much enthusiasm making dens" as the children. And when asked if the children love playing outside she said: "Yes, they love it. Poor things are dragged outside, rain or shine." Kate revealed the lasting impact of walking through the bluebells with her grandmother as a child inspired the colour palette. I thought Monty Don a great choice of interviewer; he's a passionate advocate for the positive effects of gardening on mental health. The royals walk a fine line between their personal selves and official roles; I thought the interview was very Kate. It was great to see her talk so candidly and openly. If a video emerges, I'll add it here.

It's been a complete treat to follow the process of 'Back to Nature' since January. I think posting updates regularly was an excellent way of sharing the process step by step. Hearing directly from Kate in the video, the BBC piece and the open letter published in relation to early years offered a very personal touch which added an extra layer to this endeavour. Kate immersed herself in this project, and it was an ideal fit for her, marrying her love of the outdoors with her early years work. She's relished it, visiting almost every day over the past week. It's filled with personal touches and I imagine seeing her own children playing in it was a very special moment. I love seeing the Royal family out in force supporting one another, which we saw in spades this evening. The garden and the thought process behind it are fantastic.

Well done Kate, you should be immensely proud of 'Back to Nature'. George is certainly proud of Mum :)

This is not the end of Kate's gardening efforts though; she will continue her collaboration with Davies White for the remainder of the year. The trio will co-design two further RHS Gardens, maintaining many of elements from the Garden at Chelsea, at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (2-7 July 2019) and RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, which will open in the autumn later this year.

How exciting for Kate to finally have this day come to show off the garden! Must be so exciting!

I looooove her hair and the earrings. The dress is quite nice actually. I mean... it's clearly Erdem, but the colours make it seem less heavy and I like the old feel of it at an event that is also quite old! But that haaaaair!! So pretty!

And look at that posture! She looks in charge! I love it! You can really tell how proud she is! I'm so glad for her!! It's such a wonderful feeling when a project you've put alot of heart into finally is there! And it's been so great seeing William proudly by her side/in the background for this project! Also so fun seeing the support from the Queen and Sophie!

She's done a magnificent job of this. It's obvious from all the posts surrounding this that it is is a passion of hers!
Those children of hers are a delight. Loved the pics of them and the interaction between the children and parents.
Thanks for the updates Charlotte. I love to come here and read all the posts.

  7. Are they 'forget me not' flowers on her dress ? Not a huge fan of Kate in Erdem, but this is the exception ! Her hair is lovely. What a great day it must have been for her and the family, watching it all come together ! Bravo Kate !

  8. I really like all the elements of this project -- seeing her and her family playing there, seeing her earlier today, and seeing her and the Queen in their very part of nature outfits! Seems like the work on mental issues is really stepping up.

I kinda wish Kate would go back to darker hair, though -- I thought she looked so beautiful with dark hair.

  9. This whole gardening experience seems to be right up her alley. She can get out in the sunshine, do something good, and wear more relaxed clothing, which I believe she prefers. This Erdem dress though...very matronly and busy. It's a no from me, as they say.

  11. Great garden which looks like so much fun. I loved yesterday's dress and the culottes absolutely knocked it out of the park for me but, oh dear, this Erdem was also worn by the Duchess of Kent to Harry's wedding and it just seems such an odd choice.

I can not find photos of the Duchess of Kent wearing this same dress at Harry's wedding, can you provide a link? I don't remember it and it seems an odd choice for a royal wedding, more for a garden opening:)

    6. Rita, I'm guessing DoK chose the dress because she thought it was pretty and spring like but also comfortable. Good reasons for anyone but especially someone in their 80s. My surprise about Kate's choice was because a member of her extended family has already publicly worn the dress.

yikes, thanks for the links. I totally missed that at the wedding probably because it was such a well, miss. the pearls and the purse strap across the body and the tennis shoes?? def has the nutty grandma look in granddaughter clothes, does not seem like royal wedding attire?

I think Kate chose it because she looks great in it! and it looks comfortable and she properly accessorized so that makes it even better.

  15. Have been anxiously awaiting this day!! What's not to love??? Kate is clearly in her element with this project. She looks amazing, very appropriate, love the hair, and really love the Erdem...it completely works for the show and was wondering if the flower's in it are forget-me-not's. The shoes she is wearing seem to be very popular because Sophie is wearing a similar type (love the print on Sophie's dress BTW). Love the support from William, they both look so handsome together. Very, very proud that Kate has taken her passion and made her mark in such a personal and meaningful way. The garden is amazing, love that it looks like it has been there for forever. To think that this garden can be relocated to a hospital for patients to enjoy is heart warming. Very happy that there has been so much coverage and many unexpected photos, a true treat. cc

She is such an attractive woman. Love to see HM with her family in a less formal setting. Got a kick out of her saying to William something to the effect of "looking tidy".

It is such a treat to see so much coverage surrounding the Chelsea Flower Show! The Erdem Dress is quite pretty, but I think I would like to see a different shoe. Maybe something dark to complement the dress pattern. All of the behind-the-scenes press and special Instagram posts from the Cambridges feel like they are ushering in a new era for their family. 22. I’m just so thrilled for Kate. I’ve read how much she loves the outdoors and her family crest’s nod to the Oak/acorn, but these past few days she’s really shown her passion. I can’t imagine having your creativity and final project critiqued by the Queen (the twig in her handbag is the best). She must have been so very nervous! It melted my heart to hear for myself George’s comments and William praising Kate. Of course she looked gorgeous tonight and I really hope this shines a new light on Kate’s work and the choices she makes.
Oh and I loved that Sophie climbed the treehouse. What a good sport to support Kate! 💕

  30. I love the garden -- I wonder what the scale is? I mean, how big is it? It's a bit hard to tell from the pictures or even the video because it seems to use a small space very cleverly. I don't love the dress. To me the darker color of the floral (dark grey? navy? black? I'm not very good at differentiating dark colors) is a bit too somber for a floral.

    1. Rebecca - Sweden20 May 2019 at 23:22

I've been wondering about the scale as well. I think they might have one of the bigger plots, but even then I think it's a very cleverly designed space to make you "close out" the rest of the world when in it! Which is a perfect design that could possibly be replicated in smaller inner city spaces to give some of the tranquility of nature in a place where it barely fits!

  31. First chance to get to a desktop computer in a few days (can't post from my phone), so first I want to say that the coverage of Kate's Garden Project has been fantastic - so many wonderful shots of all the Cambridges, and I hope Kate is very proud of her efforts going into this worthy, relevant and impactful project. So cute to read that she was nervous about presenting the Garden to HM. The little note about her picking up a stray branch is endearing. I read in another post that the Garden will end up going to a hospital, which is a lovely idea. Good to know that the Garden will live on!

As to today's event, and the style therein: I love Kate's hair tonight - very clever design elements. I won't add commentary on the Erdem dress because I don't have much good to say there. Both Sophie and Beatrice looked very nice, esp the Sophie's dress choice and the fun choice of footwear on Beatrice!

  32. So amazing to see Kate’s passion project unfold. She did it with grace and humbleness and it was lovely to see her children enjoy the space and William show how proud he was. Certainly a confidence builder for her. She imagined Heads Up, then focused on early years and this is the culmination which will launch her platform for years to come. As she says, “generational”.

I loved that the whole family came out to support Kate on one of her first really big projects. What support and love. The nod to Princess Diana, also a big hit for me. Any scout or gardening engagement Kate does is my favorite and this one is top of that list. Seeing the kids dip their toes in the water and talking was SUCH A TREAT! Hooray for Kate on a job very well done!

  36. Highlight for me: William asking George to give mummy's garden a score of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, and George immediately yelling "twenty!" and then "thirty!"

  37. After reading all of the commentary posted here, I say really well done! And it explains why Kate spends a lot of time with her children to the point of criticism.

I love the little stream because I used to sit on a wooden bridge over a creek in Penn as a child and it was the best time. Just enjoyed the sun and the water and being in the environment. So few vehicles came by that I never had to move. I wonder if Kate has many of the elements in the garden at her home; seems like she would.

Lovely to see the family supporting her, too!

  38. What a lovely event! I love the treehouse, the rope swing, and the fact that Kate looks visibly tired in these photos. Don't get me wrong she looks great, but she does look like she's spent many days and nights on this project and her face reflects that.

As for the outfit love the wedges, the dress ... eh. I guess I just don't like the Erdem style. IMO it always swamps women with Too Much. Too much flowery design, too many ruffles, too high of a collar, and the result no matter the dress looks fussy.

But as I said, a great day for Kate and she should be proud of her work.

This garden is a gift. Kate has involved her children in gathering the materials and obviously spent many hours in the work of creating the garden. Then this notoriously private family shared pictures and videos of their children's joy in the garden. They gave their planning, and labor, and privacy to share this with all of us. It isn't an inspiring speech or a glittering reception, it is a simple, heartfelt gift that I can appreciate and relate to. It does remind me of the benefits of simple things like being outdoors. We can all go for a walk, plant a seed or plant, enjoy fresh air and the beauty of nature. I enjoy the birds. I'm sure we all have a favorite outdoor activity that Kate invites us to remember and enjoy.

  41. What a happy and proud day for Kate to see her wonderful garden come to fruition and to have the support of her family and the royals for its debut. What a wonderful, satisfying project. Lovely to see William so proud of his Kate. And Erdem seems to be so Kate, if that makes sense. It was so nice to see Kate's joy with the garden. I did a second take with her HM's fashion today. It seems unusual to see her without a hat, and her dress and coat appears to be what she wore to Harry's wedding. Does anyone else think that? Anyway, HM looked lovelly.

In the first picture because I just saw the top of the dress I thought I liked it because of the print & the color but then I saw the picture of the whole thing. 50. Well done to the Duchess! It's a beautiful garden and she should be very proud! William looks very proud as well! I wonder if it was nerve-wracking to show everything to the Queen! I love anytime we get to see the Countess of Wessex, she's always so well put-together. I love Catherine's dress and shoes but WOW those earrings are expensive. They're definitely not the worst things ever but I'm really not a fan (especially knowing the price). Just my opinion! Sometimes, with items like those earrings in particular, it still blows my mind the budget she must have. What would that even be like?

  51. I just noticed that the Queen wore what she wore at M&H's wedding! I thought that was most interesting!

  52. Thank you so much for this wonderful post. Yesterday was one of the best Royal watching days ever! It was so neat to see the Cambridge family, and how other Royals were supporting Kate. Sophie Wessex on the ladder is just adorable! And it was nice to see Beatrice and Kate together too.
I’ve seen reference in several papers this morning that Kate published “activity cards” so that families can recreate some of the garden in their own homes. I don’t currently have children, but I would love to get my hands on these! Charlotte, or other readers, does anyone know how to get them? Thanks so much.

I thought I had seen the worst from Erdem , but the man seems to be able to do more .... as long as women buy those things ..... sure he will soon or late run short of his grandma’s curtains he uses to make those « dresses » ........ terrible look including the shoes !!! The Queen dresses more younger than Catherine, sometimes .....

    1. I agree, Nicole. It's a dress only Kate could carry off, but I dislike the busy lace detail and general Granny's housecoat of it.

    2. This garden is so inspiring and beautiful; and clearly Kate's heart project. Well done, Catherine!

  57. Love this Erdem - perfect for the setting; Victorian styling so en vogue right now. She looks like a woodland fairy against the ferns and foliage and her braided hair adds to that vibe. On the model the dress sweeps the ground so obviously Catherine had it shortened, which was sensible considering the setting. What an amazing project.

  58. In the last video, where Prince George scores his mother's garden whilst swinging on the rope, Pr. William speaks to Princess Charlotte. Not sure what he said. A pet name? Can you figure this out?

  60. Here's a lovely video of Kate working in the garden before its unveiling. Some great close-up shots from different angles of the waterfall, the stream, the log, and the forget-me-nots!! Also found an article that said Kate took the children to the garden again on Thursday morning before it opened and they helped her water it. It must have been so much fun for them that they wanted to go back and help!! A very special engagement for Kate, all the way around. cc
