Kate Hopes 'Back To Nature' Encourages "Quality Time Outside For Families"

The Duchess of Cambridge returned to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this morning to show a group of children her garden.

The visit was an opportunity to see the benefits of the garden in action with a group of children and a chance to thank the group of collaborators involved in the project since its inception.

The Palace shared an excellent video of Kate discussing the garden and the importance of nature.

Kate said: "It really ties into some of the early years work I've been doing and I've been really trying to learn about the impact, the importance and relationship of our early childhood experiences on our later adult life. An amazing fact I learned recently was that 90% of our adult brains are developed before that age of five. That's why I think it's so important that all of us whether we're parents or carers or families members really engage in quality time with children and babies from a really, really young age".

The Duchess continued: "I really hope this woodland we've created, in a huge collaboration, really inspires families and kids and communities in general to get outside. Enjoy nature. Enjoy the outdoors and really spend quality time together".

The Duchess also discussed scientific research and the skills children learn outside "It's really an open playground".

Kate climbs the treehouse.

A helping hand.

Kate and the children enjoyed an array of outdoor activities including reed boat baking and marshmallow toasting.

A closer look at the leafy display.

Kate chose boulder hopping in the Lake District as a treasured childhood memory.

The Duchess posed for a photo with the group.

On Instagram, the Palace thanked all those who joined Kate.

A fun video from the visit.

In case you missed it, the Palace shared a fantastic video from the Cambridge family visit yesterday. It's full of moments featuring the children playing and having fun. At one point, William asks Charlotte if she wants to help George and she replies "No". She also says "Ooh la la" whilst exploring. George is seen climbing rocks and pointing out elements to William (he's such a big boy now). And don't miss Louis making a beeline for the camera :)

More from the Mail Online:

'Meanwhile Kate's children, Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one, were actively involved in collecting twigs, logs and moss from around Anmer Hall, their Norfolk home. They built a rustic tepee-style den and fire pit at the heart of the garden. 'They've been involved every step of the way and the duchess was excited for them to see the finished result,' said an aide. Children – both hers and others – have always been at the heart of this project.'

Hello! reports:

'The Duchess of Cambridge has admitted her children surprised her during their visit to her woodland garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. When she returned to the garden on Monday morning to show it to a group of schoolchildren, Kate revealed: "The children played last night in a way I hadn't imagined. They were throwing stones. I hadn't actually thought that that was what they would be doing.
"They kicked their shoes off, and wanted to paddle in the stream… using it in a way that I hadn't anticipated," she added.
As she helped children from two local primary schools make little boats from reeds and launch them into the stream, Kate got down on her knees and told them: "Now we need sticks to get these ones going."
Later as she sat by the fireside helping the youngsters to thread marshmallows on to sticks to toast over the fire, she said "I love the smell of the smoke," she said. "It's great, isn't it?" One girl, Maya Bell-Springer, six, from Christ Church primary school in Battersea, who was sitting in a mini-den made of hazel sticks, beamed with delight as she said: "It is lovely and relaxing." She said afterwards: "She helped me cook my marshmallows. It was awesome."

We've seen several casually stylish ensembles from Kate this week.

This morning, she wore the elegant Mabel Shirt by M.I.H. Jeans. The $325 broderie anglaise piece features scallop trim on the neck and puffed sleeves. The delicate floral detail is very pretty. It's currently available at Orchard Mile.

Kate teamed the shirt with a pair of buttoned culotte trousers by Spanish brand Massimo Dutti (with thanks to April Girl).

Kate's belt is an older Massimo Dutti style (with thanks to Middleton Maven).

The Duchess opted for her comfortable Superga Cotu Sneakers. They are available in multiple colours at Nordstrom.

Kate accessorised with her £135 Monica Vinader Siren Wire earrings.

And Cartier watch.

The Duchess will return later today with the Queen and other members of the royal family.

  2. Thank you, Charlotte, as always.
The Duchess has certainly been "hands on". Anyone else noticed the plasters on each of her thumbs!

    1. She has been photographed many times with band-aids (plasters) on her hands. Thumbs, area between thumb and forefinger, and middle fingers. Buckingham Palace has been asked about it and declined comment so I won't offer my opinion either but whatever they cover could explain the clutch purses so she doesn't have to shake hands.

    2. She is s hands-on mama. I expect she is always busy doing things herself & got little sores. I can relate as I've had many house projects & have a blister on my thumb from using a screwdriver repeatedly.

    3. I intended this comment in a tone of admiration, not ridicule. And she DOES shake hands, even when carrying a clutch bag or wearing adhesive dressings.
      Just saying.... ;-)

  4. It now makes sense why Kate was not at the wedding on Saturday. While they didn’t need her to put in the last few plants I can understand that she wanted to be there when it all came together. She definitely put a lot of herself into this project.

  5. Can someone explain the ban on children attending. I saw this on Twitter and thought, that cant be correct, but then I looked it up on the official RHS Chelsea show website and it clearly says no children under 5 are permitted. I'm confused. Is this really enforced? It just seems like such a great garden for all to enjoy, including the wee little ones.

    1. Kate's child friendly garden won't be the only one on show. I guess RHS Chelsea prefers children above the plucking flowers age...
It was so nice that Kate did a preview of the garden with the group of school children.

    2. Chelsea (the flower show) is always a scrum. Small children would just be swamped. It is pretty ghastly even for grownups.

  6. Great event but why is the Duchess wearing pantyhose under her pants and sneakers? I know she loves her hose but wearing them under pants and sneakers? I'm also surprised that small children cant attend. Maybe it has to do with there being bees and other allergens in the garden and they dont want anyone attending who might not know they have these allergies?

    1. Or could be just comfort with sneakers. Wearing sneakers without socks can also lead to stinky feet;-0 The pants would look clownish with socks so knee high nylons seems like next best thing. I didn't notice till you said that. I'm sure she thought it wouldn't be obvious.

It does not look to me like she is wearing pantyhose.

      Delete
    3. She could wear the short socks that only cover the feet (I think there’s a name for them). They’re very popular in the US for shoes like this. Maybe it’s not as popular in the U.K.? Overall, I still absolutely LOVE this look. Anon in CA

    4. I think they're called pop socks. I have a few pairs which I wear with dress pants and dress shoes. Just seems weird to wear them with sneakers.

      Delete
    5. I wear no show socks all the time with tennis shoes. Love them!

  7. All I can think is that unlike Kate’s garden most garden’s at the Chelsea show are more “work of art” that “children’s playground”, so little hands pulling and grabbing might be a problem.
Luckely Kate’s garden will be relocated to a hospital, I think, so then kids will really get to enjoy it.

Makes sense. And a big part of the play-garden has been to evoke the childlike feelings in adults so it's not really meant to be a "child thing"

    2. Members of the public do not go into the show gardens, but view them from the side. Even the largest is pretty small (about 10m by 20m). Hundreds of thousands of people go to Chelsea. They would destroy the show gardens if they walked in them.

How wonderful this has all been! It's great to see how involved and proud Kate is of this project and it was very clever to invite schoolchildren to play around in it as well! I love that they are letting the kids roam free in a garden like this that will be on show for (what I would guess) quite a few gardening-snobs (I mean that in the kindest way). They could have waited until after the initial showings and left it ristine and styled. But I love that they're not doing that. They are letting the area show the spirit it was created for!

I like her look! It's princess pretty and playing practical all at the same time!

I also adore that the garden will be moved and replanted for future use! Seems so on brand with the whole thing!!

    1. You said exactly what I was thinking, Rebecca! This has obviously been a labor of love for Kate, and her joy in seeing children engage and enjoy the garden is lovely. Just a wonderful garden and idea! So glad it will be relocated to a more public space when the show is through.

I loved Kate’s look today, also. Casual and practice but still very feminine. So much better than her tendency toward skinny jeans on casual outings! She looked lovely, fresh, ready to play yet professional all at the same time.

  14. I’m glad Kate seems to be updating her pants wardrobe, but I will always be hands down on culottes. These seem particularly unflattering. Something about the buttons? The way the belt seems to be desperately holding them up? It’s sort of potato-sack adjacent.
Shirt is fantastic though, and I’m really pleased to see her work on this garden!

  16. You can tell how happy Kate is doing hands-on work to create a project she really believes in. She’s in her element. It’s wonderful to watch.

I’ve done a lot of reading, inspired by Kate, on the importance of the outdoors for children and I know that it’s something I will take heavily into consideration when I have my own kids.

  17. I just enjoy watching the children enjoy themselves in this nature garden. The Duchess of Cambridge looks happy, relaxed and confident; appropriately dressed for a day in a nature garden. This nature garden would definitely be a place of interest for me if I was in the UK. I, too, am outdoorsy. Thanks, Charlotte.

  18. Really like Kate's outfit for the day. Professional looking while very appropriate for active "playing" in a garden area. I am not usually a fan of culottes but really like this pair on Kate.

    1. The video is especially wonderful!! Charlotte looks so delighted to be there and she can be heard saying ooh la la...so so cute!! The interaction of the family is just great. There is another video on Instagram where William asks George how he would rate the garden from 1 to ten with ten being the highest and George responds with a twenty!! To which William responds "I think Mommy's done well!" LOVE that Kate has this loving support from her family. cc

  22. Loved the video of children playing! They are growing up so fast! I don't like the culottes at all. They do nothing for Kate's figure, nor do they seem casual enough for playing outdoors. I think a blue or khaki jean would have been a better choice, especially with the sneakers. Still, a lovely engagement.

  23. I never in my life thought I would like culottes...but here I am, finding myself really like these trousers on her! Whoah! Just goes to show that everything that’s old can be made new again in a fresh way.
    The garden looks absolutely beautiful!

  24. I like that Kate said that when children appreciate and explore nature in childhood, they will want to protect and respect it in adulthood. That's a forward thinking enviromentalist. I think Kate has taken her time to develop her lifelong passion and dedicated work. It's wonderful to watch how she is going about early childhood mental health. Also it was lovely to watch her children play. What a happy family!

  25. Her hair looks lovely. I always prefer Kate’s hair more straight without the curl blowout. I also love the shirt. Pants are a miss for me, but good for her for incorporating them more. Now onto more important things: what a wonderful project she has assisted with! The outdoors are so good for most. This is just great!

love this! all of these events lately have made me think about how we used to play in the woods behind our house ALL the time. sad to think of all the screen time kids have and not going outside! like her outfit, it is laid back and perfect for playing with children. loved seeing them all as a family yesterday as well, I need to go back and check that post out, always better on a full screen than a phone:) have a good week everyone!!

  28. Now y'all know I do not like skin tight skinny jeans. At first I wasn't sure about the culottes, but the longer I look, the more they grow on me : ) They evoke a long skirt, but without concerns for modesty. It's a perfect adventurously fashionable look for the event.
Love, love, love the video with George, Charlotte, and Louis!

Kate's shirt is not the same as the one in the photo and the linked Orchard Mile website, but is obviously a version of it. I'm not sure I like the pants, maybe if they weren't cropped, and/or with such a wide leg. But I do like that she is wearing something different.

    1. I love that Kate is wearing something different, but I do agree about the pants. Can't decide if they are culottes or gauchos?? Culottes are suppose to look more like a skirt and then I would have liked it with less roundness to the legs. These are a bit longer and the legs wider, so looks more like gaucho. Maybe its the tennis shoes with it that give it a different look, but then Kate has given it her usual twist and made it work for the occasion and look great while doing it!! I love the way the model is wearing the look with flat sandals and think it will give Kate another look for another time. It looks like a modern version of something from Out of Africa. Very 'apropros' and very Kate.

  31. The photos of the features of the garden without people in them are wonderful. It includes all the fantasy aspects of playing in the woods that I enjoyed as a child; a stream, cascading water, a tree house, a “den” of branches-ours were simpler but I saw them in my mind as beautiful but natural like this garden. The Duchess and the designers have done a lovely job.

    1. It truly is a beautiful garden. They have done a wonderful job of making it seem mature and yet very natural. Love the picture of the flowers at the base of the ladder. They look so delicate, wild, very much like you would find in a wooded area or meadow. The stream and the rocks look so inviting and natural. There has been quite a bit of work done behind the scenes not just in the design, but in the execution. Love, love it. cc

I love this endeavor of Kates! Her sincerity and commitment are awe inspiring. I've enjoyed watching how she is supporting the Early Years Mission with different pillars (e.g. outdoor play and exploration). It is brilliant and so isn't she. And the pictures yesterday were perfection.

On the fashion front she looks terrific and she is accessorizing so that makes me happy!! Having said that, the outfit is great but the shoes and belt were wrong. I think a canvas Toms style shoe would have been lighter profile than a sneaker and better suited to the pant style. The belt was definitely too heavy a style for this spring ensemble. A lighter weight belt would have been perfect!

  39. So adorable!!!
I love that Kate has really blossomed.
She has always had passion but I think she just quietly added more and more and her confidence shows.
I just think she plugged along, took the criticism in her stride and just did what she and William thought was best. It’s not everyone’s way of doing things, but it worked for them.
She seems very established and at ease with her role, and since she seems like a person who is not totally at ease with the public speaking etc I think she did EXACTLY what was right for her.

    1. I really agree, she is coming across so established and comfortable in her role. She has combined her interest in children, mental health, and general parenting. I think she would have liked to become a child psychologist or something similar if her life had been different. I think Kate is a quiet, family centered person, she is not interested in the limelight and will never set the world on fire with her causes but she comes across as such a lovely person and has created a wonderful family life for William after his sad childhood . Seeing them together as a family is amazing, they seem so relatable and Kate and William are definitely hands on parents. Sinead

  41. I cannot stress enough how much I love this project and how she has really contributed and not just put her name on it. The video of her kids playing in it is just what I have wished for!! You see their personalities and how they interact with each other. I played in the woods all the time as a child and built forts with rocks, sticks, downed trees . . . so much fun. My so is 17 and still would rather be outside building trails around our property than in front of a screen.

As for her outfit, I like that she tried something different and it was perfect for climbing up the ladder, sitting on a stump, etc. I was not crazy about the color of the pants, but this look is a hit for me mostly because she is really in her element and is practically glowing with pride!

    Hope from USA
